Buddy Emmons/Jay Dee Maness/Red Rhodes/Sneaky Pete/Rusty YoungSuite Steel – The Pedal Steel Guitar Album ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A mighty sweet album of steel guitar instrumentals – a special Elektra Records session that features five of the greatest talents on the instrument at the start of the 70s – both longtime stalwarts, and key up-and-comers! Sneaky Pete Kleinow joins here with Buddy Emmons, Jay Dee Maness, Red Rhodes, and Rusty Young as a fantastic quintet of string-bending talents – all working with help from a small backup combo – and each getting a turn in the lead from track to track. The differences in tone and phrasing are great, and really come through over the course of the set – which has a vibe that's much hipper than the usual country instrumental albums of the period! Titles include "Yesterday", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Down On The Corner", "Everybody's Talkin", "Blackbird", "Wichita Lineman", "Muddy Mississippi Line", "Turn Any Corner", and "Prodigal". CD

Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jay DeeWelcome 2 Detroit ... CD
BBE (UK), 2001. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A classic masterpiece from J Dilla – a record that set the tone for countless hip hop releases in years to come – but which still shows Jay Dee as one of the smartest, sharpest, most forward-thinking producers to rule the roost! The set's got some incredible live instrumentation – lots of funky drums from Karriem Riggins, and a wealth of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards from Dwele – two artists brought along from the Detroit underground by Dilla, in a lineup that also includes work from Frank N Dank, Blu, Phat Kat, and Beej. The whole thing is fantastic, this amazing blend of instrumentals and vocal numbers that show that hip hop had plenty of new territory to open up in the 21st century – on titles that even include tributes to some key inspirations – like "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd). The whole thing is classic – and other cuts include "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". CD

✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. Warner/Real Gone, 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant lost record from the Barry White side of the 70s soul universe – the one and only album issued by Jay Dee, and a set that's every bit as great as other White side projects with artists like Tom Brock, Danny Pearson, and Gloria Scott! Like all of those, the soulful maestro is very heavily involved here – producing, arranging, and writing most of the tracks – and giving the whole thing that funky soul strings approach he was using with his own wonderful music of the period – which makes for some especially sweet tracks that mix deep soul vocals with kind of a blacksploitation groove! The whole thing's great – and titles include the killer "Strange Funky Games & Things" – which has become a funk and sample classic over the years – plus "Jay's Theme", "Com On In Love", "Thinking Of You", "I Can't Let You Go", and "I Can Feel Your Love Slipping Away". CD features two bonus tracks – single and instrumental versions of "Strange Funky Games & Things". CD

CommonBE ... CD
GOOD/Geffen, 2005. Used ... $6.99
BE isn't exactly a back-to-basics LP in the vein of his classic work for Relativity – but it is indeed a return to a focused, genuinely soulful, no BS approach – and it's a very welcome one at that! It seems like Com was a bit affected by some of the criticism folks had for the spacious, astral Electric Circus LP – if you ask us Common had no reason to apologize, but we'd be lyin' if we said we weren't hoping for another batch of tracks that sound like they could have been written on a front porch on the southside of Chicago. This is indeed that record – 12 tracks, few guest appearances, and a warm, consistent sound all the way through. There's a 3 track span on this album, from "Chi-City" through "Real People", that's seriously close to perfection. Welcome home, Common! Ruggedly produced by Kanye West, with a couple of stellar production contributions from Jay Dee! Other tracks include "The Corner" feat Last Poets, "Go!", "Faithful", "Testify", "Love Is. . .", "The Food (live)" (this great track has been circulating for a while since it was performed on Chappelle's Show, and we're thrilled Common and Kanye had the good sense to include it on the album), "They Say" featuring John Legend and "It's Your World (Part 1 &2)". CommonElectric Circus ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used ... $4.99
Common newcomers who buy Electric Circus for the single with Mary J Blige are going to be left with some head scratching – but if you like the spiritual/psychedelic Com that was hinted at on Like Water For Chocolate, this may be the follow up you were waiting for! This is still hip hop – with production by the Neptunes, Jay Dee, ?uestlove and others, but it's definitely a boundary stretcher. The mood runs from Roots style soul bumpers to Hendrix and Eugene McDaniels style feedback heavy freakouts. There's a guest on nearly every track, mostly from the Okayplayer camp and NuSoul titans, including Bilal, Omar, Pharrell Williams, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab and others. We won't lie to you, we miss the Chicago hip hop Common that kicked insight over raw and soulful productions, but you can't fault the guy for being an artist, and he really has crafted something original here. A great cover – a kind of rainbow drenched cut and paste photo collage of the contributors and inspirations with Com out front, sort of reminding us of Tribe's Midnight Maurauders, and even Sgt. Pepper. Tracks include "Ferris Wheel", "Soul Power", "The Hustle", the first single "Come Close", "New Wave", "Star *69", "Jimi Was A Rock Star" and more. CD

Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
A fantastic record from the early days of the dee jay scene in Jamaica – a set from David Scotty Scott, who'd previously been a singer – and who does a really great job here hanging between two different modes! Many tracks feature Scotty rapping along with the laidback grooves – that relaxed, easygoing early Jamaican dee jay style that replicates some of the calls you might have heard out in the street, when one of the major sound systems was pumping things up. But Scotty also sings, too – with a great soulful voice that's very much in the spirit of the rocksteady years – balancing things out, and making for one hell of a classic album. Derrick Harriott produced – and titles include "Penny For Your Song", "Draw Your Brakes", "Lonely Man", "Sesame Street", "Rosemarie", "Musical Chariot", "Jam Rock Style", and "Riddle I This". Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. This is the Slums' biggest outing so far without the full participation of Jay Dee – but never fear, Jay shows up here on a few tracks, and you also get beats by Hi Tek and others. The tracks are mostly on the short side, moving the flow along at a consistent clip – and the beats are the nice kind of tight, minimal synth bumps. There's also some sweet, soulful touches not unlike the ones we love so much on the best Blackalicious tracks. Pure hip hop that sounds comfortably new, but without any concessions to current trends! Tracks include "Tainted" and "Star" with Dwele, "Insane", "Slumber", "Let's", "S.O.U.L.", "Love U Hate", "Unisex", "La La", "All-Ta-Ment", "Get Live", "What Is This", "Hoes", "Disco", "Fall In Love", and more. 23 in all, including skits and interludes. A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. Fantastic work from legendary producer Joe Gibbs – a key force in helping Jamaican music find the darker side of its groove at the end of the 60s, thanks to some groundbreaking work in the dee jay mode, and some other styles that are definitely an earlier precursor to dub! And sure, there's a few familiar tracks, but in the 25 title set list, there's more than enough rare bits to keep our ears happy! Titles include "Help Me Somebody" and "They Don't Know" by The 5 Royales, "Raindrops (unreleased alternate)" by Dee Clark, "Have Faith" and "My Heart Remembers" by Gene Allison, "My Adorable One" by Joe Simon, "Good Times" by Jerry Butler, "Oo We Baby I Love You" by Fred Hughes, "I Can't Get Away From Your Love" by Wade Flemons, "Who Knows" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "A Spanish Boy" by The Rubies, "Someone Is Stealing My Love" and "You Only Want Me When You Need Me" by Ivory Joe Hunter, and "I Can't See Your Love" by The Ballads. Folk soul guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and genuine character Abner Jay's brilliant home recordings – the first release of his "terrible comedy blues" in far too long – courtesy of the always deep digging Mississippi label! Abner takes on the topical issues of the days with a skewed sensibility that's brilliant, and his singing, the performances and the recording quality aren't really as rough and raw as you might expect, though nowhere even close to manicured and clean sound – it's just right really for the material. One of the flashiest Columbia sessions from the team of Kai Winding and JJ Johnson – but also one of the best! The record almost borders on gimmicky – with an 8-piece trombone section, and use of the unusual trombonium instrument – but thanks to some deft arranging, the sound is relatively tight without being goofy – and the pair manage to push the use of the trombone in jazz to new levels without resorting to silly tricks, as on Hi Fi albums of the period. Other trombonists include Urbie Green, Eddie Bert, and Jimmy Cleveland – and titles include "Rise N Shine", "Night In Tunisia", "No Moon At All", "Jeanne", "You're My Thrill", "Four Plus Four", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". A key set of early work from Betty Everett – and a great document of the strength of her early soul on Vee Jay! Although the title hit is quite familiar (and possibly a bit overplayed), Betty was a great vocalist with a wide command of material even at this early point in her career – and the album has her running through numbers that easily step between jazzy, bluesy, and soulful modes that beautifully bridge the worlds of soul and R&B! You might want to skip past the title hit, lest it color your judgment of the record, because there are loads of nice tracks on here, like "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Until You Were Gone", "The Prince of Players", and "I Need You So". Vee Jay, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Forget the title – which sounds like a bit of a gimmick – as this is a fine fine Eddie Harris album! After the success that Vee Jay had with Eddie Harris' huge hit version of "Exodus", they cut this album of Eddie playing movie themes – like "Green Dolphin Street", "Laura", "Moonglow", and "Secret Love", plus a few standards like "These Foolish Things", and "The More I See You". Dick Marx handled the arrangements – and the overall sound is slicker than Eddie's "Exodus", as his solos are laid out over larger string arrangements by Dick Marx, but it's not without some charms – especially because Eddie's tone at this point is amazing, filled with little tricks and turns that make just about anything he plays sound great! MJT+3Walter Perkins' MJT+3 ... LP
Vee Jay, 1959. Very Good ... $16.99
The MJT grooves like nobody's business, thanks to a core rhythm group that includes Harold Mabern on piano, Walter Perkins on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass. Add to the mix a young Frank Strozier on alto, fresh from Memphis (he made the trip to Chi-town with buddy Harold Mabern), and the smoking trumpet of Willie Thomas, and you've got one of the tightest combos to never make it in the big time. Who cares, though, because this album is a gem, and it grooves along mightily from top to bottom. Strozier and Mabern are fantastic, and they bring a unique soul jazz approach from their native Memphis into play with the firey Chicago rhythm of Cranshaw and Perkins. Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. Great stuff from Kastaway, a Chicago emcee not to be cast adrift! Carrying influences of classic Chicago hip hop, his voice, flow and narrative are deeply distinctive – and his Revelation is solid all the way. He weaves relatable stories, but they're so pointedly personal, we're just happy to be along for the ride. The sound is neo classic hip hop, but nothing is boilerplate here, it's all heart and soul. Strong organ grooves and evolving bass lines make it especially compelling – with tried and true beats and witty use of soundbite samples. Includes "Just To Get A Rep (Intro)", "Frenemies", "Institution (Books)", "Chosen", "9-6 And Forever", feat WRDs, Mic Logic & Cam The Downrocka, "Wings To The Sky" feat Stephanie McNair, "Shine" feat Gritz, "Love Hard/Still Fight" feat Tiffany Michele, "My Life Continues" feat Rudy De Anda & Lester Jay, Revelation" feat Tiffany Michele and more. Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBe For Real – The PIR Recordings 1972 to 1975 (I Miss You/Black & Blue/To Be True/Wake Up Everybody/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". OutkastSpeakerboxxx/The Love Below ... CD
LaFace, 2003. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
Pick any 10 words out of any Outkast album description on our pages at random, and you'll see how dearly we've loved these boys throughout the years – but truth be told, deep down we didn't think that they would be able to pull off the double album/solo album project(s). We were seriously wrong – Speakerboxxx/Love Below is HUGE in every way, and both halves are great all the way through! If you were worried Big Boi's Speakerboxxx half would be lazy southern hip hop without Andre's freaky presence throughout, you can put those fears to rest right now. Speakerboxxx is a deeply soulful electro hopping pounder from front to back – every bit as innovative as Andre's half! Tracks include "Ghettomusick" (which features one of just two appearances by A3000 on the whole disc), "Bowtie" with Sleepy Brown, "Bust" with Killer Mike, "Church", "Tomb Of The Boom" with Konkrete, Big Gipp and Ludacris, "Flip Flop" with Jay-Z, "The Way You Move" and more. A lot of press has been given to the assumption that Andre 3000 has largely forsaken hip hop on his half (The Love Below) and has instead dived head first into cosmic future funk. Well, the rumors are true. There's lots of straight up jazz piano and horn bits on the Love Below, with Andre's half serious, half tongue-in-cheek romantic soul cabaret croon way over the top. It's steeped in the classic Outkast party vibe, but with lots of Sign Of The Times-era Prince (complete with androgynous distorted vocals), Parliament and Cameo thrown into the mix. Sick, energetic genius! Tracks include the deliriously great "Hey Ya!" single, "She Lives In My Lap", "Love Hater", "Happy Valentine's Day", "Roses", "Good Day, Good Sir", "Behold A Lady", "Pink And Blue", "Spread", "Dracula's Lady" with Kelis, and more. Who the hell knows what they can possibly do to surprise us after this – but wherever Andre 3000 and Big Boi go from here, they each have yet another classic in the discography! CD

Rich PerryHappy Destiny ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Darkly moody sounds from Rich Perry – a tenorist who's got a great way of sliding from note to note, often with energy that almost feels effortless, but which also has a nice sort of tension along the way! This quality is never too overstated – as it might have been in saxophonists from a decade or two back – and instead, it's maybe this sort of secret voice that comes from the way that Perry puts things together, and which seems to hint at an even deeper current his work, one that bears plenty of repeated listenings to discern. The rest of the group is very well-matched too – Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums – working their way through original Perry compositions that include "Iron Buddha", "Everything Hurts", "Plant Based", "Happy Destiny", "Luft", "Recoleta", "Rebellion Dawgs", and "Long Dark Spring". Linval Thompson/Big Joe/TrinityTrojan Roots Collection (I Love Marijuana/African Princess/Rock In The Ghetto/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. VariousCult Cargo – Grand Bahama Goombay ... CD
Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Heavy funk from the Bahamas – a whole bunch of groups that will show you that Nassau had a lot more to offer than The Beginning Of The End! The groove here is totally wonderful – somewhat like American funk of the late 60s and early 70s, but served up with some very unusual rhythmic patterns too – a bit Jamaican at times, but certainly not reggae – and somewhat sunny and Caribbean styled, but not in a way that's cheesy or filled with any hokey island-styled stereotypes. Instead, the tunes are deeply funk and soulful – grooving with plenty of dark edges and gritty instrumentation that's often heavy on the guitar. Many numbers have vocals, and those are great too – and as usual with the Numero label, the whole thing's put together with amazing notes and packaging, so that you get a full history lesson and a heck of a lot of photos to support the music too! Titles include "Gonna Build A Nation" by Cyril Ferguson, "Mustang Sally", "I Am The Man For You Baby", and "Funky Fever" by Jay Mitchell, "Theme From Shaft" by Esquires LTD, "Gimme Some Skin (inst)" by Frank Penn, "Words To My Song" by Dry Bread, "People Won't Change" by Willpower, "Take Five" by Ozzie Hall, "Watcha Gonna Do Bout It" and "The Time For Loving Is Now" by Mustangs, "Honesty Is The Best Policy" by Gospel Chandeliers, and "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall. Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 24.98
It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! If some Afro Funk acts drew strong influence from the sharp soul of James Brown, these groups all seem to drink deep from the same musical well as Funkadelic at their freaked-out early best – which means that they've got no trouble throwing in a psych guitar riff alongside soulful vocals and funky rhythms – all with a sound that's completely sublime. Titles include "Wake Up You" by Waves, "Love" by Question Mark, "Baby Rock" by Jay U Experience, "Life In Cannan" by Ceejebs, "Who Made The World" by The Identicals, "Awa Lani Arawa" by Kukumbas, "Life Will Move" by The Believers, "The Feelings" by Tony Grey & The Black 7, "I Want A Break Thru" by The Hykkers, and "In The Jungle (voc)" by The Hygrades. Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Nice, nice compilation of sides produced by the legendary Hookim brothers for their Channel One and Well Charged labels at the Channel One studios, all based on the Revolutionaries band, with Sly Dunbar and Ranchie Mclean as the foundation in the rhythm section. While many labels and producers churned out singles for the sound systems in a factory like production line, the Hookims always managed to coax the most of their singers and players, taking time to build not just hits, but classics. As with their other reissues, a number of great vocalists and deejays are featured, alongside the instrumental and dub versions of their tracks. Earth & stone, The Wailing Souls and John Holt are some of the singers, while Trinity & I Roy chat over the tracks too, like "Tribal War", "Shaka the Great", "Up Park Camp", "All Gone", "The Meaning of Life" and "Lawless Society". The cover's a bit creepy, but the set's a great one – way more soulful than the image of a dummy might make you expect! The collection follows strongly in the same territory as the funk titles on the Tramp Records label – and like those, digs deep in the American underground to find a host of under-exposed gems from back in the day – tunes that start out in the fast funk years of disco, but also move into some great 80s grooves as well! There's a huge number of cuts here we've never heard before – but that's no surprise, given the way that Tramp puts a set like this together – and titles include "The Freeze" by Steven Toll, "SOS" by Tyree Glenn Jr, "Missing You" by Silky Vincent Group, "Sights & Sounds" by Jeffords Brothers, "Medicine Man" by Grayson Street, "Puss (part 1)" by Oakland Express, "A Fool No Longer" by Afrodisia, "Don't It Make You Feel Good" by Deep South Dance Band, "Touchdown Cleveland Browns" by Ray Jay Band, "Future" by Keither Florence & The Associates, "Anytime" by Empulse, "Beautiful Day" by Mel O Madnezz, and "Dig This Piece" by Progressive Sounds Band. Def Jam, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Time will tell whether the sophomore LP Late Registration will prove to be as revolutionary of a commercial force as College Dropout turned out to be – but it's a better album! We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. We really loved Kassa Overall's debut, but we're completely blown away with this full length set – as the record's got a visionary sound that's completely his own – a really new mix of jazz, soul, and funk that's bound to make Kassa one of the most important talents in years to come! Overall sings and plays drums – the latter of which are used in very open, creative ways – amidst a keyboard-heavy set of instrumentation that also includes work from Sullivan Fortner on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Vijay Iyer on Fender Rhodes, Joel Ross on vibes, and Theo Croker on flugelhorn! Kassa finds a way to bring in these guests, and others – but always at a level that never changes the core style too much – so that it's always clear we're always in very personal territory, with a style that's poetic one minute, funky the next, and always extremely beautiful. Titles include "Please Don't Kill Me", "Visible Walls", "Was She Happy", "Sleeping On The Train", "Landline", "Darkness In Mind", and "The Best Of Life". CD
