Jay DeeWelcome 2 Detroit ... CD
BBE (UK), 2001. Used ... $6.99
The first of BBE's forays into current hip hop – and a wonderful debut in the series! The album started as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with real instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". CD

Jay DeeYancey Boys Instrumentals (colored vinyl) ... LP
Delicious Vinyl, 2008. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... $19.99 24.99
The J Dilla beats that provided the stellar backdrop for his brother Illa J's worty rhymes – and the instrumentals for the Yancey Boys album – a record that stands up very well against many of the better Dilla productions in his lifetime. It could have gone wrong in a number of ways for a number of reasons – but truth be told it's a quality record that's will worth picking up! On the vocal versions, Illa J's proved a worthy talent – rolling with a mix of singing and rhyming is really unique – and this set of bright, spacey funk beats by Dilla are naturally top notch, timeless and sound wonderful out on their own. Tracks include "Timeless", "We Here", "R U Listenin'", "All Good", "Swagger", "Illasoul", "Air Signs" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

BBE (UK), 2001/2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort – The first of BBE's forays into new school hip hop – finally available! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be and a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series. It really started out as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with live instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. This one returns the project to more of that pre-planned breakbeat feel. A stellar set, with lyrics, or without – one that laid the groundwork for Dilla's subsequent production aesthetic! Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

A fluid set of groovy turntablism from DJ Cam! This time out Cam seems to just as eagar give to nod to some of the other titans of DJ culture as he is to move his own work forward – and it's that aristocratic method that really puts the record over. He's got the scratch-and-sample bite of primo on one track, mirrors the baroque G Funk sound on another, gets the Detroit synth groove out on another. . .get the gist? Another solid LP from one of the most reliable DJ/headliners in the game! Tracks include "Premier", "Sense", "Ghetto Superstar", "Espionage" featuring Guru, "The L", "Don Dada", "Liquid Hip Hop", "Kalimba Groove", "Love Junkee" featuring Jay Dee and Cameo (it's as ill as you'd think) and "Comewithastring". J Dilla & OthersRebirth Of Detroit ... CD
Ruff Draft, 2012. Used ... $14.99
Dilla beats and an allstar roster of guest Detroit MCs – and a strong debut full length from Ruff Draft Records! Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Dilla didn't cop to current trends in his time on earth (except for the ones he started in the first place) so it stands to reason that the beats he had in the can before he departed would hold up strongly years later – and they do! The guests here bring their A-games, plus full respect and admiration for Dilla. Includes "The New Installment", "Detroit Madness" with Phat Kat, "Big Things" with Esham, "Let's Pray Together" with Amp Fiddler, "Requiem" with Allan Barnes of The Blackbyrds, "My Victory" with Boldy James, "Do It For Dilla Dog" with Illa J and Frank Nitt, "Jay Dee's Revenge" with Danny Brown and cuts by DJ Dez, "Houseshoes Was Spinnin'" with Quelle Chris and more. Montana Orchestra/Goody GoodyHeavy Vibes ... CD
Unidisc, Late 70s. Used ... $18.99
The great Vince Montana was one of the strongest forces in the Philly soul scene of the 70s – and he was not only an excellent vibist whose instrumentation can be heard on countless LPs, but also one heck of an arranger, with a real talent for a soulful groove. Montana's work was head and shoulders above most disco of the time, and included strong elements of funk, and a real concern for jazzy phrasing that kept things real. This 12 track CD features cuts by Montana's orchestra, his sextet, and 2 by the excellent combo Goody Goody – a studio project of Vince's that only ever cut one LP on Atlantic. Many tracks feature Vince's vibes work over tight clubby grooves – and titles include "Heavy Vibes" (in 3 mixes), "#1 Dee Jay", "Let Me Work On You", "Ride Like The Wind", "Another Start", and "Lover's Magic". ✨✧ Slum VillageFantastic Vol 1 ... LP
Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. Lots of straight soul, deep funk, and mellowed out jazzy touches that became a staple in underground soul and hip hop, influencing everyone from ?uestlove and the Roots to D'Angelo, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, and others. Jay VonsWord (with download) ... LP
La Castanya, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
We got the word on The Jay Vons, and it is that this organ soul and raw vintage R&B influenced combo delivers the goods in a big way – with an authentic sound to show for it – recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul! The group's earlier singles had the deep soul and funk base elements of the Daptone sound, but expanded on it with mod and baroque 60s pop and rock touches, and this full length delivers on those promises while still hewing strongly to a tight groove overall. The secret to the taut vibe is probably the excellent core quartet – organ, guitar, bass and drums (and they're organ-forward for sure) – fleshed out nicely in the studio by horns, strings, vibes and more when the groove calls for a bigger sound. Includes "The Word", "Night (Was Stealing From The Sun)", "Changing Seasons", "It Was Wrong To Love You", "Never Take Me Back", "Keep On Moving", "Take It This Far", "Maybe I Loved You", "Did You See Her" and more. Mercury/Elemental (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". Diana DorsSwingin Dors ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good ... $9.99
One of the sexiest sets of vocal jazz to ever come from the British scene – a classic 1960 album by the lovely Diana Dors – easily one of England's best answers to American cheesecake singers of the 50s! As you'll notice by the cover, Diana's got a look that's right up there with Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield – but as a singer, she's far better – with a full range, and good sense of expression – often delivered in the manner of some of the best vocalists working in the US for RCA in the late 50s. The backings are great too – handled by the Wally Stott orchestra with a nice sense of jazz throughout – some really swinging horns that are quite unusual for a UK session like this at the time – and which really further the American feel of the set. Titles include "That's How It Is", "Namely You", "The Point Of No Return", "Roller Coaster Blues", "The Gentleman Is A Dope", "April Heart", "I'm In Love For The Very First Time", and "Tired Of Love". A sweet little set from European beatmaker Rodney Hunter – working here with a host of great guests who really help keep things soulful throughout! Peter Kruder co-produced the set with Rodney, but it's much more of a hipper soul album than most of the other work on Kruder's G-Stone label – thanks to vocals by the array of guest singers, and some soaringly spacious grooves from Hunter himself! There's a lot more focus here than the usual G-Stone downtempo – catchier songs with a bit more going on. Guests include Jay Sebag, Shadee, Aphrodelics, Zeebo, and Earl Zinger – and titles include "Huntermatic", "Wanna Groove", "No Stoppin"," Glamour Girl", "Latina Thrilla", "Part Of The Mind", "Voodoo", "Universe", and "Love". A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. MJT+3MJT+3 ... LP
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+ ... $16.99
One of the best-kept secrets of the hardbop era! This amazing group – formed in Chicago in the late 50's by ex-Memphis players Walter Perkins on drums, Harold Mabern on piano, and Frank Strozier on alto – has always been one of the best groups ever to sum up the meaning of the phrase "hard bop" – as they play with tight bop lines, but mix in longer, more relaxed playing, and some very soulful phrasing. Strozier especially is amazing, and Mabern's piano lines are as warmly lyrical and richly complicated as on his later work on Prestige – and the group also features the great Willie Thomas on trumpet and Bob Cranshaw on bass. The team of Cranshaw and Perkins is amazing – MJT, Modern Jazz Two, who really make the album cook – freely grooving with incredible rhythms, which makes Strozier sound almost better than on any other sessions from the time. A classic album of 50s mood music – partially for its famous cover image of Jayne Mansfield on the telephone! But the music's pretty great too – less of the swinging, dynamic sounds you might guess from the "bachelor" in the title – and more in the mellower, romantic style of earlier 50s instrumentals – with full strings from Henri Rene that swirl and shimmer nicely throughout! Other instrumentation includes piano from Buddy Cole, and guitar from Barney Kessel – and titles include "Easy To Love", "I'm Confessin", "For The Very First Time", "Somebody's Wrong", "Time On My Hands", and "Dinner For One Please James". ✨✧ Sarah Mc Lawler & Richart OttoWe Bring You Swing ... LP
Vee Jay, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of a few rare albums that the team of Lawler and Otto cut for Vee Jay during the late 50s – all of them showing the stranger side of the Chicago jazz scene, a underrecognized one that mixes a high-concept approach with south side soul jazz, in an attempt that might have been aimed at the downtown crowds. Sarah McLawler is a female organist – in the mode of early Shirley Scott – and Otto is a violinist, with a style that's somewhere between Eddie South and Stuff Smith. Here, they're backed by a rhythm section that includes Redd Holt and Eldee Young, as well as guitarist Lefty Bates – and the quintet swings easily on shorter tracks that are mostly standards. Guitarist Vic Juris has always been a master of tone – a player who takes the chromatic modes of the postwar jazz years on the instrument forward to newer generations – always leaving his own touch on the strings with a deeply personal approach! This set's a nice balance of two different modes – as there's some very mellow moments that feel more acoustic than electric – balanced with those that have that richer tone that we always love from Juris – set up nicely in a group that also features Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums. Juris contributed a few originals to the set – "Long Story", "Lost Keys", and "Robin's Hood" – and other titles include "Avenue", "The Glide", "Moon & Sand", and "Everything I Love". CD

Def Jam, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 29.98
Time will tell whether the sophomore LP Late Registration will prove to be as revolutionary of a commercial force as College Dropout turned out to be – but it's a better album! We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! ✨✧ Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBe For Real – The PIR Recordings 1972 to 1975 (I Miss You/Black & Blue/To Be True/Wake Up Everybody/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". LaFace, 2003. New Copy 4LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Pick any 10 words out of any Outkast album description on our pages at random, and you'll see how dearly we've loved these boys throughout the years – but truth be told, deep down we didn't think that they would be able to pull off the double album/solo album project(s). We were seriously wrong – Speakerboxxx/Love Below is HUGE in every way, and both halves are great all the way through! If you were worried Big Boi's Speakerboxxx half would be lazy southern hip hop without Andre's freaky presence throughout, you can put those fears to rest right now. Speakerboxxx is a deeply soulful electro hopping pounder from front to back – every bit as innovative as Andre's half! Tracks include "Ghettomusick" (which features one of just two appearances by A3000 on the whole disc), "Bowtie" with Sleepy Brown, "Bust" with Killer Mike, "Church", "Tomb Of The Boom" with Konkrete, Big Gipp and Ludacris, "Flip Flop" with Jay-Z, "The Way You Move" and more. A lot of press has been given to the assumption that Andre 3000 has largely forsaken hip hop on his half (The Love Below) and has instead dived head first into cosmic future funk. Well, the rumors are true. There's lots of straight up jazz piano and horn bits on the Love Below, with Andre's half serious, half tongue-in-cheek romantic soul cabaret croon way over the top. It's steeped in the classic Outkast party vibe, but with lots of Sign Of The Times-era Prince (complete with androgynous distorted vocals), Parliament and Cameo thrown into the mix. Sick, energetic genius! Tracks include the deliriously great "Hey Ya!" single, "She Lives In My Lap", "Love Hater", "Happy Valentine's Day", "Roses", "Good Day, Good Sir", "Behold A Lady", "Pink And Blue", "Spread", "Dracula's Lady" with Kelis, and more. Who the hell knows what they can possibly do to surprise us after this – but wherever Andre 3000 and Big Boi go from here, they each have yet another classic in the discography! Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. TravellersBlack Black Minds ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1977. Used ... $12.99
A lost Jamaican harmony classic! By the late 70s, vocal harmony groups were beginning to fade from the Jamaican scene, as Dee Jays and dub plates ruled the scene, and the dawning of the dancehall era was just around the corner. But Prince Jammy was still working with some remarkable groups, and this classic LP of rootsy vocal harmony numbers was cut at the same time as Jammy's seminal work with Black Uhuru. Somehow this choice set of sweetly voiced harmony got lost in the cracks, but thanks to the Pressure Sounds crew, it's been brought to the light of day once again. Fans of their great Royals reissue will this nice set, another wonderful Jamaican soul set! 16 numbers in all, including "Black Black Minds", "Know Yourself", "Jah Gave Us This World", "Peace & Rest", "The Girl I Left Behind", "Tell Me Why","How Long", "Poor Man Cry" and "Keep On Trying". Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Heavy funk from the Bahamas – a whole bunch of groups that will show you that Nassau had a lot more to offer than The Beginning Of The End! The groove here is totally wonderful – somewhat like American funk of the late 60s and early 70s, but served up with some very unusual rhythmic patterns too – a bit Jamaican at times, but certainly not reggae – and somewhat sunny and Caribbean styled, but not in a way that's cheesy or filled with any hokey island-styled stereotypes. Instead, the tunes are deeply funk and soulful – grooving with plenty of dark edges and gritty instrumentation that's often heavy on the guitar. Many numbers have vocals, and those are great too – and as usual with the Numero label, the whole thing's put together with amazing notes and packaging, so that you get a full history lesson and a heck of a lot of photos to support the music too! Titles include "Gonna Build A Nation" by Cyril Ferguson, "Mustang Sally", "I Am The Man For You Baby", and "Funky Fever" by Jay Mitchell, "Theme From Shaft" by Esquires LTD, "Gimme Some Skin (inst)" by Frank Penn, "Words To My Song" by Dry Bread, "People Won't Change" by Willpower, "Take Five" by Ozzie Hall, "Watcha Gonna Do Bout It" and "The Time For Loving Is Now" by Mustangs, "Honesty Is The Best Policy" by Gospel Chandeliers, and "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall. VariousHow Many Roads – Black America Sings Bob Dylan ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The oft-covered Bob Dylan songbook never sounds so soulful – classic interpretations of Dylan's canon from a great, far reaching roster of black artists – from the the ever-stirring Staple Singers, southern soul heroes Howard Tate and OV Wright, charismatic country soul from Brook Benton, great gender role perspective flipped versions by Nina Simone and Patti LaBelle, a funky tamborine take by Con Funk Shun and much more! It's another excellent entry in the Songwriter Series from Ace Records, extra excellent in that it takes an obvious hero of 60s Songwriter – and actually pulls together songs that'll take you by surprise for their depth – whether you treasure Dylan, deep 60s & 70s solo & group R&B, funk, folk soul...or all of the above! Includes "Blowin In The Wind" by OV Wright, "Girl From The North Country" by Howard Tate, "The Man In Me" by The Persuations, "Lay lady Lay" by The Isley Brothers, "Emotionally Yours" by The O'Jays, "All Along The Watchtower" by Bobby Womack, "Maggie's Farm" by Soloman Burke, "Mr. Tamborine Man" by Con Funk Shun and more. 20 tracks in all. Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. VariousSave The Children ... LP
Motown, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
This one was kind of Motown's answer to the Wattstax albums – a double live set, recorded in Chicago during the Push Expo, headed by Jesse Jackson. The tracks here are more of a mixed bag than some of those on the deeper soul Wattstax albums, but there are some nice moments overall, buried in the large mix of music and artists – many of whom didn't normally record for Motown. The tunes are familiar, but they're presented here in some nicely different live takes. Titles include "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers, "Country Preacher" by Cannonball Adderley, "This Child Of Mine" by Zulema, "Everybody Plays The Fool" by Main Ingredient, "Give Me Your Love" by Curtis Mayfield, "I've Gotta Be Me" by Sammy Davis Jr, "I Wanna Be Where You Are" by The Jackson 5, "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye, "Close To You" by Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager, "On A Clear Day/Killer Joe" by Roberta Flack & Quincy Jones, and "Sunshine" by The O'Jays. Also features some dialogue by Jesse Jackson. LP, Vinyl record album

Another great Studio One collection from the folks at Soul Jazz, this time highlighting the DeeJays! While heavyweights like Big Youth & U Roy never voiced tracks for the groundbreaking label, there's no shortage of first class toasting on this selection, and it's Studio One, so you know the rhythms are hot! Dennis Alcapone, Dillinger & Prince Jazzbo all come hard with tracks like "Power Version" & "Natty Kung Fu", and there's a few sweet numbers by less well known names like Prince Francis & Jah Jesco, plus a nice slice of history with Count Machuki's "More Scorcha". 16 burning tracks in all. Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 24.98
It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! If some Afro Funk acts drew strong influence from the sharp soul of James Brown, these groups all seem to drink deep from the same musical well as Funkadelic at their freaked-out early best – which means that they've got no trouble throwing in a psych guitar riff alongside soulful vocals and funky rhythms – all with a sound that's completely sublime. Titles include "Wake Up You" by Waves, "Love" by Question Mark, "Baby Rock" by Jay U Experience, "Life In Cannan" by Ceejebs, "Who Made The World" by The Identicals, "Awa Lani Arawa" by Kukumbas, "Life Will Move" by The Believers, "The Feelings" by Tony Grey & The Black 7, "I Want A Break Thru" by The Hykkers, and "In The Jungle (voc)" by The Hygrades. Get ready for the get down with a fab batch of fresh funk, island style! Soul Jazz serves up a heavy batch of heat that smokes like a tasty batch of jerk chicken on a pillow of coco bread! Most of these cuts ooze spicy juices at a nice laid back, sun-drenched tempo instead of the choppier more hectic stateside funk you're probably used to, but they groove no less hard. You'll recognize some classic reggae rhythms as well as deep and heavy covers of American funk pulsing underneath the Dee Jays and soulful vocalists on these great cuts, and there's no shortage of top notch instrumental versions, either! 18 sweet jams in all, including "Get It Together" by Earl Brown, "Brown Baby" by Derrick Harriott, "I Love The Way You Love" by the Chosen Few, "Silent Force" by Cedric Im Brooks, "Dunce Cap" by Herman & The Aquarians, "Give Me Some More" by the Studio Sound, "Jam #1" by Winston Wright & The Upsetters, "Rhodesia" by The Rebels and 'Tricked" by Ansel & The Meditations. Steeplechase (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rich, round tones from Mike Richmond – one of the few improvising cellists we know in jazz – a musician who can pluck the instrument with all the depth of a bassist, and whose work here takes us back to classics in the tiny genre by Ron Carter, Oscar Pettiford, and Eldee Young! The setting is lean, and the cello lines are clean – really inflected with a mix of melodic and rhythmic vibes – the latter of which are underscored by deeper conventional bass work by Jay Anderson, in a quartet with Peter Zak on piano and Billy Drummond on drums! The lineup have a great way of swinging gently, as Richmond moves between plucking and bowing – on titles that include "Stranger In Paradise", "Come Sunday", "La Vie En Rose", "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love", and "Zingaro".
