Jay DeeWelcome 2 Detroit ... LP
BBE (UK), 2001. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 29.99
The first of BBE's forays into current hip hop – and a wonderful debut in the series! The album started as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with real instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort – The first of BBE's forays into new school hip hop – finally available! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be and a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series. It really started out as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with live instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. This one returns the project to more of that pre-planned breakbeat feel. A stellar set, with lyrics, or without – one that laid the groundwork for Dilla's subsequent production aesthetic! ✨✧ Jay DeeYancey Boys Instrumentals (colored vinyl) ... LP
Delicious Vinyl, 2008. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The J Dilla beats that provided the stellar backdrop for his brother Illa J's worty rhymes – and the instrumentals for the Yancey Boys album – a record that stands up very well against many of the better Dilla productions in his lifetime. It could have gone wrong in a number of ways for a number of reasons – but truth be told it's a quality record that's will worth picking up! On the vocal versions, Illa J's proved a worthy talent – rolling with a mix of singing and rhyming is really unique – and this set of bright, spacey funk beats by Dilla are naturally top notch, timeless and sound wonderful out on their own. Tracks include "Timeless", "We Here", "R U Listenin'", "All Good", "Swagger", "Illasoul", "Air Signs" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Jay DeeCome On In Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant lost record from the Barry White side of the 70s soul universe – the one and only album issued by Jay Dee, and a set that's every bit as great as other White side projects with artists like Tom Brock, Danny Pearson, and Gloria Scott! Like all of those, the soulful maestro is very heavily involved here – producing, arranging, and writing most of the tracks – and giving the whole thing that funky soul strings approach he was using with his own wonderful music of the period – which makes for some especially sweet tracks that mix deep soul vocals with kind of a blacksploitation groove! The whole thing's great – and titles include the killer "Strange Funky Games & Things" – which has become a funk and sample classic over the years – plus "Jay's Theme", "Com On In Love", "Thinking Of You", "I Can't Let You Go", and "I Can Feel Your Love Slipping Away". CD features two bonus tracks – single and instrumental versions of "Strange Funky Games & Things". CD

✨✧ Orquesta Dee JayForget It ... CD
Lewgas/Latin Soul Recordings, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard and heavy salsa from Orquesta Dee Jay – the group's obscure second album, and easily their best! The album's a rare gem issued after the group's better-known record for MGM – originally released on the tiny Lewgas label, and filled with sharp-edged tunes throughout! There's a rough, raw groove here that hangs on throughout – lots of percussion at the bottom of most tracks, bringing in a rootsy, jamming energy that pushes the top-end blend of piano and trombones forward strongly. Vocals are by lead singer Rafael DeJesus, plus a chorus with Yayo El Indio, Adalberto Santiago, and Elio Romero – and nearly all the tracks on the album are uptempo, and come across with a trombone-topped sound that's a fair bit like early 70s Willie Colon on Fania. Titles include the sweet soul numbers "Forget It", plus "Mi Son", "Calunga", "Yemaya & Obatala", "Dona Paula", "Buena Suerte", "Dile Que Vuleva", and "Maniatica". CD

Vee Jay, 1961. Near Mint- ... $18.99
A real classic from Chicago soulman Dee Clark – and one of those crazy Vee Jay albums packaged in a cover with an image of young white love! Despite that cloying image, though, the record has a tremendous depth – and is a great illustration of the versatility of Clark at his best, especially on some of the lesser-known numbers. There's a vocal range here that easily matches Jackie Wilson at his best, and which nicely slides between ballads and more upbeat numbers – both done with some nice string-heavy arrangements. Titles include the classic "Raindrops", plus "Hold On", "Whisperin Grass", "Cindy", "Your Friends", "I Want To Love You", "Always Together", and "Portrait Of My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

J Dilla & OthersRebirth Of Detroit ... CD
Ruff Draft, 2012. Used ... $9.99
Dilla beats and an allstar roster of guest Detroit MCs – and a strong debut full length from Ruff Draft Records! Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Dilla didn't cop to current trends in his time on earth (except for the ones he started in the first place) so it stands to reason that the beats he had in the can before he departed would hold up strongly years later – and they do! The guests here bring their A-games, plus full respect and admiration for Dilla. Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. Slum Village teams up with the hip hop-reared jazz funk collective Abstract Orchestra for this worthy revisit/live band rework of the legendary Fantastic Vol 2 – a soulful Detroit hip hop classic and a vital piece of the late great J Dilla's legacy! A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. It's also a testament to Dilla's original production that it makes so much sense fleshed out with horns, strings and more orchestral atmosphere. VariousFlag Flown High – Best Of Bobby Digital's Roots Productions ... CD
Maximum Pressure (UK), 1990s. Used ... $9.99
Jamaican music, like classic R & B, has always been a producer-driven music, and remains so to this day. Bobby Digital Dixon has stepped up in the 90s to assume the role played in the past by greats like the Hookims or Bunny Lee, while also taking on the mantle of passed down by his mentor King (formerly Prince) Jammy. Clearly the foremost producer in Jamaican music for the last decade, this compilation put together by the folks at Pressure Sounds under their new side label Maximum Pressure focuses on the highlights of his work, and in doing so is a showcase for just about every important contemporary Jamaican singing and dee jay talent. Rather than having to wade through a couple dozen 12 inches each of the hottest rhythms, this compilation brings together the cream of the crop: 19 awesome Digital B tracks, including Garnett Silk's "Mystic Chant", Shabba Rank's "Heart of A Lion", Sizzla's "Good Ways", Louie Culture's "Fire Bun", and "Every Knee Shall Bow" by Garnett Silk, Cocoa Tee & Charlie Chaplin. ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Folk soul guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and genuine character Abner Jay's brilliant home recordings – the first release of his "terrible comedy blues" in far too long – courtesy of the always deep digging Mississippi label! Abner takes on the topical issues of the days with a skewed sensibility that's brilliant, and his singing, the performances and the recording quality aren't really as rough and raw as you might expect, though nowhere even close to manicured and clean sound – it's just right really for the material. Jay & The AmericansCapture The Moment ... LP
United Artists, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $1.99
Jay & The Americans make a surprisingly great shift here – moving into material that has a bit more of a roots rock vibe – which makes the album sound a lot deeper than most of their previous sets! The sound is maybe slightly out of time – a touch folk rock, with a vibe that would have been especially relevant in 1966 – yet it still does a lot for the group, and helps Jay find vocal territory that really fits the sound of his style. There's also one interesting bit of trivia here, too – a pre-Steely Dan Walter Becker and Donald Fagan provide arrangements on a few tracks – in a set of titles that include "Sleepy", "I'll Be Leaving Her Tomorrow", "Is There A World Without You", "Thoughts I've Taken To Bed", "No I Don't Know Her", "He Loves The Feeling", and "Learnin How To Fly". O'JaysO'Jays (Bell pressing) ... LP
Bell, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $5.99
This is the second version of an album that was first pressed under the title Back On Top – repackaged here with a slicker cover during the early 70s, to cash in on the fame that the O'Jays were having at Phily International. Although the group's Philly recordings are always touted as some of their best work, we love this early material produced by George Kerr – with a sound that's very similar to classic New Jersey groups like The Moments and The Whatnauts (and which also features a few songs that were covered by those groups, too). The band have heavenly harmonies that are more fragile than on their tightly-sewn Gamble/Huff work, with some elements of the deeper soul that was on some of their earlier recordings. For some reason, the album links together the tracks with a fake "audience" sound, as if it's a live album – which it really isn't. We can forgive the producers at Bell for that, though – because the tracks are so great! Includes the single "I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow", plus "I'm So Glad I Found You", "Look Over Your Shoulder", "Going Going Gone", and "I Dig Your Act". LP, Vinyl record album

Also, some nice guest appearances from Method Man, Raekwon, Nas, Big Noyd. Includes the hilarious "Drop A Gem On 'Em", "Hell On Earth", "Extortion", "More Trife Life", "Still Shinin'", "G.O.D. Pt III", "Nighttime Vultures", "Bloodsport" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ O'JaysO'Jays Live In London ... CD
Philadelphia International, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal album in the development of Philadelphia International – who seemed to be taking a cue from Motown and Stax in the 60s, by bringing their biggest act to a European audience! The set features the O'Jays working as beautifully in a live setting as they had in the Sigma Sound studios – singing to arrangements by Dennis Williams, but still getting enough production by Bobby Martin to keep the sound in line with their better known studio work from the time. There's a bit of a deeper soul sound overall here – especially on the vocals, which crackle nicely with a live sense of spontaneity. Titles include "Back Stabbers", "Sunshine", "Love Train", "When The World Is A Peace", and "Put Your Hands Together" – plus a few vocal introductions! CD

✨✧ Jay VonsWord (with download) ... LP
La Castanya, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We got the word on The Jay Vons, and it is that this organ soul and raw vintage R&B influenced combo delivers the goods in a big way – with an authentic sound to show for it – recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul! The group's earlier singles had the deep soul and funk base elements of the Daptone sound, but expanded on it with mod and baroque 60s pop and rock touches, and this full length delivers on those promises while still hewing strongly to a tight groove overall. The secret to the taut vibe is probably the excellent core quartet – organ, guitar, bass and drums (and they're organ-forward for sure) – fleshed out nicely in the studio by horns, strings, vibes and more when the groove calls for a bigger sound. Includes "The Word", "Night (Was Stealing From The Sun)", "Changing Seasons", "It Was Wrong To Love You", "Never Take Me Back", "Keep On Moving", "Take It This Far", "Maybe I Loved You", "Did You See Her" and more. Invictus/Demon (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The only album ever by The Barrino Brothers – a stellar early 70s harmony group, and one who could sing with the best of the east coast scene of the time! The whole set's got a feel that's very much in the best mode of groups like The Modulations, Soul Generation, and even The O'Jays – as the group's got a deeper, more solid sound than some of the more fragile outfits of their era. Production is very strong – thanks to the Holland-Dozier-Holland powerhouse sound of the time – and the group's vocals are supported on a full groove that really helps send the whole thing over the top! The title cut "Livin High Off The Goodness Of Your Love" is a stone classic – and other nice tracks include "Rain", "I Had it All", and "It Doesn't Have to Be That Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury/Intermusic (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... $9.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CD

Vee Jay/Real Gone, 1962. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A beautiful Christmas present from Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – a selection of Holiday tunes all recast with their tremendous harmony sound! The group are surprisingly great in this format – as their music always has this odd undercurrent of melancholy that really brings out the best in the tunes – and which opens up with a deeper feeling than just straight covers of Christmas tunes. Frankie's nose is right out in the lead on most numbers, and thanks to production by Bob Crewe and arrangements by Sid Bass, even familiar tunes are presented here in very fresh versions! Peter Kruder co-produced the set with Rodney, but it's much more of a hipper soul album than most of the other work on Kruder's G-Stone label – thanks to vocals by the array of guest singers, and some soaringly spacious grooves from Hunter himself! There's a lot more focus here than the usual G-Stone downtempo – catchier songs with a bit more going on. Guests include Jay Sebag, Shadee, Aphrodelics, Zeebo, and Earl Zinger – and titles include "Huntermatic", "Wanna Groove", "No Stoppin"," Glamour Girl", "Latina Thrilla", "Part Of The Mind", "Voodoo", "Universe", and "Love". Organ instrumentals from gospel artist Maceo Woods – rare early Vee Jay material that stands as a great link between Hammond jazz and instrumental soul – and which is one of the best examples of the influence on gospel from both genres at the time! Maceo plays here virtually solo – handling all tracks with just the various features of the organ – and usually playing in a spare and mellow style as he makes his way through a range of original numbers and public domain spirituals. A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Guitarist Vic Juris has always been a master of tone – a player who takes the chromatic modes of the postwar jazz years on the instrument forward to newer generations – always leaving his own touch on the strings with a deeply personal approach! This set's a nice balance of two different modes – as there's some very mellow moments that feel more acoustic than electric – balanced with those that have that richer tone that we always love from Juris – set up nicely in a group that also features Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums. Juris contributed a few originals to the set – "Long Story", "Lost Keys", and "Robin's Hood" – and other titles include "Avenue", "The Glide", "Moon & Sand", and "Everything I Love". CD

A sweet set of digital dub from the Nigerian scene – a record that blends drum machine beats with richer, bassier currents – all in a vibe that's like some of the best underground work coming out of Kingston a few years before! Singer/leader Essco Wilson, aka Sharon Dread, features vocally on half the album's tracks – sometimes as a singer, sometimes acting more as a deejay – and the core rhythms are inflected with slight electro touches, but always in a way that's relatively stripped-down, and which keeps things interesting – very different than mainstream music of this type at the end of the 80s. Linval Thompson/Big Joe/TrinityTrojan Roots Collection (I Love Marijuana/African Princess/Rock In The Ghetto/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. Numero, Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
Heavy funk from the Bahamas – a whole bunch of groups that will show you that Nassau had a lot more to offer than The Beginning Of The End! The groove here is totally wonderful – somewhat like American funk of the late 60s and early 70s, but served up with some very unusual rhythmic patterns too – a bit Jamaican at times, but certainly not reggae – and somewhat sunny and Caribbean styled, but not in a way that's cheesy or filled with any hokey island-styled stereotypes. Instead, the tunes are deeply funk and soulful – grooving with plenty of dark edges and gritty instrumentation that's often heavy on the guitar. Many numbers have vocals, and those are great too – and as usual with the Numero label, the whole thing's put together with amazing notes and packaging, so that you get a full history lesson and a heck of a lot of photos to support the music too! It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". ✨✧ VariousOnce Upon A Time At King Tubby's ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. ✨✧ Kanye WestLate Registration ... CD
Def Jam, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! ✨✧ OutkastSpeakerboxxx/The Love Below (4LP set) ... LP
LaFace, 2003. New Copy 4LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Pick any 10 words out of any Outkast album description on our pages at random, and you'll see how dearly we've loved these boys throughout the years – but truth be told, deep down we didn't think that they would be able to pull off the double album/solo album project(s). We were seriously wrong – Speakerboxxx/Love Below is HUGE in every way, and both halves are great all the way through! If you were worried Big Boi's Speakerboxxx half would be lazy southern hip hop without Andre's freaky presence throughout, you can put those fears to rest right now. Speakerboxxx is a deeply soulful electro hopping pounder from front to back – every bit as innovative as Andre's half! Tracks include "Ghettomusick" (which features one of just two appearances by A3000 on the whole disc), "Bowtie" with Sleepy Brown, "Bust" with Killer Mike, "Church", "Tomb Of The Boom" with Konkrete, Big Gipp and Ludacris, "Flip Flop" with Jay-Z, "The Way You Move" and more. A lot of press has been given to the assumption that Andre 3000 has largely forsaken hip hop on his half (The Love Below) and has instead dived head first into cosmic future funk. Well, the rumors are true. There's lots of straight up jazz piano and horn bits on the Love Below, with Andre's half serious, half tongue-in-cheek romantic soul cabaret croon way over the top. It's steeped in the classic Outkast party vibe, but with lots of Sign Of The Times-era Prince (complete with androgynous distorted vocals), Parliament and Cameo thrown into the mix. Sick, energetic genius! Tracks include the deliriously great "Hey Ya!" single, "She Lives In My Lap", "Love Hater", "Happy Valentine's Day", "Roses", "Good Day, Good Sir", "Behold A Lady", "Pink And Blue", "Spread", "Dracula's Lady" with Kelis, and more. Who the hell knows what they can possibly do to surprise us after this – but wherever Andre 3000 and Big Boi go from here, they each have yet another classic in the discography! ✨✧ VariousCult Cargo – Grand Bahama Goombay ... LP
Numero, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Gonna Build A Nation" by Cyril Ferguson, "Mustang Sally", "I Am The Man For You Baby", and "Funky Fever" by Jay Mitchell, "Theme From Shaft" by Esquires LTD, "Gimme Some Skin (inst)" by Frank Penn, "Words To My Song" by Dry Bread, "People Won't Change" by Willpower, "Take Five" by Ozzie Hall, "Watcha Gonna Do Bout It" and "The Time For Loving Is Now" by Mustangs, "Honesty Is The Best Policy" by Gospel Chandeliers, and "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall. 2LP set also features a bonus instrumental version of "Don't Touch That Thing" by Sylvia Hall!
