Jason PalmerJason Palmer At Wally's Vol 2 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Trumpeter Jason Palmer has given us some great creative projects in recent years – but this time around, he's in a wonderfully back-to-basics mode – working with an excellent combo in a small club in Boston – on long tracks that really stretch out and let us hear his imaginative skill on solos! The core group is a quintet – with the excellent Noah Preminger on tenor, and Max Light ringing out nicely on guitar – driven by rhythms from Simon Willson on bass and Lee Fish on drums – players who keep a nice sense of structure in the tunes, even while things are open enough to really let the solos expand! Chris McCarthy plays Fender Rhodes on one track on each volume – and all titles are great originals by Palmer – really showing his dynamic vision as a leader. Titles on this second volume include "Ethos", "Style", "Sunny Rain", and "The Side Eye". CD

Noah PremingerGenuinity ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2018. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Noah Preminger begins the album with this great solo run on his tenor – a wonderful reminder of the constant growth he's had in recent years, and a hell of a great introduction too – before then leaping into a bold group effort from a quartet that includes Jason Palmer on trumpet, Kim Cass on bass, and Dan Weiss on drums! Obviously, the group style hearkens back to early 60s Ornette Coleman – and while the trumpet and tenor really enjoy a piano-less romp with the bass and drums, the also do a great job of showing how much ideas of free-thinking jazz have developed over the decades! The album balances tuneful passages with bolder moments, colors with rhythm – all through a set of superb originals by Preminger – who's also turning out to be a hell of a writer too. Titles include "TS & Her Spirit", "Mad Town", "Halfway To Hartford", "The Genuine One", "Walking On Eggshells", and "Nashua". CD
