Billy Lee RileyBilly Lee Riley Rocks ... CD
Sun/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $15.99 24.99
Maybe one of the most hard-hitting in this great "rocks" series from Bear Family Records – and maybe one that features one of the artists most deserving the title, too – as the legendary Billy Lee Riley steps out here on a host of classic singles for Sun Records, unissued material, and other gems recorded for Brunswick, Philips, Rita, Jaro, and Home Of The Blues! Riley had a short but great career on the Memphis scene – where he was one of the rawest, most hard-ripping talents to cut up the underground in the days of the bigger early rock giants – a hell of a singer with a very raw sound, and a guitar player too – although these tracks also feature great work from Sonny Burgess and Roland Janes as well. CD features 35 tracks in all – including "Barefootin (alt)", "Red Hot", "Rock With Me Baby", "Is That All To The Ball", "Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Trash", "Thunderbird", "Arkansas Traveler", "Pearly Lee", "College Man", "Open The Door Richard", "Got The Water Boiling", "Nightmare Mash", "Searchin", "Speed Lovers", "The Little Green Men", and "Catfish". ✨✧ Miles DavisFilles De Kilimanjaro ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A dark blend of acoustic and electric modes from Miles Davis – a set that still has him working with elements of the classic 60s quintet, but which also brings in a stronger emphasis on electric piano too! The rhythms here are really fantastic – ready to burst forth into a whole new direction, yet still not hitting the Bitches Brew level of freedom – and drummer Tony Williams may well be the real star of the set for his tremendous work on the kit – even though, as stated, the album's got some heavy electric piano contributions both from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea! All titles feature Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Tony Williams on drums – and the titles with Herbie feature Ron Carter on bass, while the rest with Chick Corea feature Dave Holland. Titles include "Frelon Brun", "Tout De Suite", "Petits Machins", "Mademoiselle Mabry", and "Filles De Kilimanjaro". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mountain Mocha KilimanjaroPerfect Times (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... LP
P-Vine/Back Fire (Japan), 2012. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The heaviest album so far from Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro – and proof that this Japanese funk combo is really headed in the right direction! These guys have always been great, but this time around everything is razor sharp, and right on the money – played with a deftness the group didn't display on their first album – and which few other funk combos could hope to match! Guitars riff away very strongly – a key part of the rhythms – and horn passages are hard-blasting, in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Atmos 2000", "Watchin", "Mud City", "Stompin Joe", "Lie On The Side", "Perfect Time", "Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind", and "Yesterday's Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

Cortijo Y Su ComboQuitate De La Via, Perico (with bonus track) ... CD
Rumba/P-Vine (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $29.99
Classic material from Cortijo's legendary combo with Ismael Rivera on vocals – one of the first records to really showcase the great sounds coming from the Puerto Rican scene in the early 60s! Rhythms are plenty lively – as Cortijo's group has the same sharp focus as the early Joe Cuba Sextet – a really strong emphasis on rhythms that can always be depended on to keep things moving. Rivera's singing is excellent to – with that nascent soul that would come into focus much more sharply in the late 60s, as countless other Latin vocalists really picked up the Puerto Rican sound! Titles include "Cortijito", "El Trompo", "Bomba Carambomba", "El Chivo", "El Pajaro Chogui", "Caramelo Santo", "Piedras En Mi Camino" and "Perico". CD features the bonus track "Druma Cuyi". CD

Miles DavisWater Babies ... CD
Columbia, 1967. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the studio – hence the cover, which attempts to contemporanize the record – and the music is very much in the dark moods and sharp tones of Filles De Kilimanjaro, and features a somewhat similar group! The core quintet of Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums handles the first half of the set – but the group's then expanded to include Chick Corea on electric piano along with Herbie on keys – and Ron Carter steps out so that Dave Holland can bring some more modern tones to the bass. Tracks are all somewhat long, and titles include "Capricorn", "Water Babies", "Sweet Pea", and "Two Faced". CD

Insolito UniVersoLa Candela del Rio ... CD
Olindo (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A Venezuelan group, one who are living in Paris – and work here with a criss-crossing of styles that really reflect that global journey! The music definitely has echoes of older Venezuelan styles, but maybe served up in a more impressionistic version – with a dream-like quality at times, as the instruments come together airily, often getting a nicely moody vibe in the production – which was partly done by Malcolm Catto, who also mixed the record. There's a really lovely female singer in the mix – with a lightness that's almost more like a bossa vocalist at times – and the instrumentation is both electric and acoustic, but often delivered at a level that make it hard to figure out where one begins and one ends. Titles include "Lloviendo En Guatire", "Yo Soy Mi Rio", "Tonada Del Guante", "Transmutada", "Vuelve", "Pajaro", and "Machurucuto". CD

KutimanWachaga ... CD
Siyal (Israel), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Much deeper work than we're used to hearing from Kutiman – and a set that's really widened the global scope of their sounds and influences! At the start, these guys were a funk group with a mix of psychedelic and 70s Afro-oriented influences – but they've really expanded here, and bring in spiritual jazz elements and other more sophisticated modes – all handled with a richness that's very organic, and which has a very uplifting quality we really didn't expect! There's often use of vocals by a group of female singers, in ways that recall some of the more powerful South African vocal chorus passages of vintage recordings – mixed with acoustic percussion elements, and layers of keyboards, samples, and other sonic touches – on cuts that include "Awake In The Rain", "Firefly Before Tomorrow", "A Giant Snail", "Tanzania", "Maasai", "Lost In The Bush", and "Rainbow Kilimanjaro". LasperanzaSeeds ... CD
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! Lasperanza has sax or flute solos on most tracks, and seems ready to rise up there with the cream of UK soul labels like Dome or Expansion in recent years – and guest singers include Decosta Boyce, Hannah White, LaAerial, Kayleigh O'Neill, Colette Connor, Keni Stevens, and Izzy Chase. Most tracks are remakes of soulful classics, completely changed up – and titles include "Let's Stay Together", "Give Me The Night", "Kilimanjaro", "Under The Moon & Over The Sky", "Early Morning Love", "Working Day & Night", "In The Mood", and "It Should Have Been You". Manhattan BrothersOut Of Africa – Always Something New ... LP
Joy, Early 60s. Very Good- ... $9.99
An early album of South African soul – cut by Johannesburg's Manhattan Brothers, and issued in the US on Joy Records! The set's pretty darn great – a mixture of soulful and folksy touches, with lively larger arrangements that mix in percussion and flute to give the work a bit of a groovy touch. The harmonies on the record are quite nice – very different than those heard on American soul records at the time, and with some nice jazzy touches. Titles include "Ganga Man", "The Blanket Song", "Mbombela", "Kilimanjaro", "Baby Baby", and "African Beetle Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Discuba, 1959. Very Good ... $14.99
Lean, lively work from Orquesta Aragon – a set that has the famous Cuban combo firmly hitting the pachanga era with a sweet mix of flute, violin, piano, and percussion! Vocals on some tracks echo an older Cuban mode, with some romantic touches – but the overall instrumentation has much more of an early 60s vibe – with some of that influence that was carried back from the New York scene. Titles include "Kilimanjaro", "Sentimientos Miso", "Eso De Ti", "Yo No Bailo Con Juana", "Injusticia De Amor", "Salsita Y Carino", "Bella Munequita", and "Tremendo Punto". LP, Vinyl record album

Miroslav VitousMajesty Music ... CD
Arista/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
One of the great ones from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a musician you might know from more atmospheric moments, but artist who could really be funky when he wanted! The album's got this righteous groove that really matches the energy of Miroslav's Magical Shepherd album from the same time – his warm, round acoustic bass tones right out front in the mix, but blended with loads of great electric elements too – including lots of wonderful keyboards, and some great reed lines from Jaroslav Jakubovic, a sharp-edged Eastern European player. The great Rimona Francis – of MPS fame – sings a bit on the record, in a cool style that's a bit like Flora Purim or Urzsula Dudziak – but most of the record is instrumental, and some of the cuts get nice and funky. Titles include "Folks", "New Orleans", "Majesty Music", "Streams & Fields", "X Rated", "Best Friends", and "Mount Shasta (part 2)". CD

VariousCuba Jazz – Jam Sessions & Descargas 1956 to 1961 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic look at one of the biggest contributions that Cuba ever made to music in the 20th Century – the rise of the jam session and descarga scene in Havana right before the revolution – a moment that saw an already-great style get even better in the hands of a few key musicians! Afro-Cuban sounds were nothing new to that city, but as the 50s moved on, the players on the scene adopted lots of influences from American jazz – and were really opening up in ways that were as open and expressive as they were fiercely collaborative – moving past the idea of a tighter ensemble with a star leader, and instead bringing together smaller groups with soloists that really got lots of space to do their thing – as did the percussionists, who really drive the music here! Most of the tracks feature some sort of vocals, but also have plenty of standout solos too - and the set features a huge amount of tracks by Cachao in his prime, plus lots more by Julio Gutierrez, Walfredo De Los Reyes, Rolando Aquila, Fajaro, Nino Rivera, and Chico O'Farrill – served up here with a total of 55 tracks on 3CDs. A great Japanese funk group – one who cut this fantastic record during the same generation as classics from Osaka Monaurail and Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro! These guys have a sharpness that rivals both groups – a way of getting everything right down on the money, at a level that's clearly inspired by the James Brown Band of the late 60s, but given a very different flavor – thanks to the Japanese language lyrics of the lead singer! The group are wonderful – probably one of the tightest, funkiest groups working in the year this set was recorded – although they never fully got their due, most likely due to the restrictions of the language. 9 smoking tracks in all - lyrics and titles in Japanese! ✨✧ Dollar Brand/Don Cherry/Carlos WardThird World – Underground ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning little session – and every bit as wonderful as you'd expect from a lineup that includes Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, and Carlos Ward! The three players work together here in open, spiritual styles – with really long-flowing lines from Brand on piano, in a more modal style that's different from some of his other records – balanced out with bold trumpet lines from Cherry, and soaring alto sax from Ward – a player who doesn't always get the chance to step out this much! All three players vocalize a bit, but more in some sort of rootsy way that echoes the music – and the album's a really unique outing from all three players – and a set we'd rank with their best from the time. Titles include "Don's Song", "Cherry", "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro", "Swazi", and "Jabulani Easter Joy". CD
(Part of the Jazz Legends In Japan series!)
