✨✧ Jinx & Mr C (James O'Connor & Damen Corrado)Compliments Of Chicagohoodz – Chicago Street Gang Art & Culture ... Book
Feral House, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing look at the secret art and language of gang culture in Chicago – the most detailed book we've ever seen to examine the words on the street during the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Chicago had a very special sort of language to communicate gang activity and culture during the heyday of the city's big gangs – graffiti that was filled with codes and symbols, and which really predated major street art in New York – plus a network of patches, business cards, and other objects that conveyed a special sort of numerology and message – sometimes harmless words about parties and events, sometimes essential details about the criminal underworld. This book is fascinating on so many different levels – not just a prurient true crime story, but instead a very detailed examination of gang culture in terms of linguistics, visual media, and representation. Yet all that detail doesn't make things too dry, either – as the book is overflowing with photos and images – examples of street graffiti, countless business cards, patches, portraits, and more – even some maps at the back. The whole thing is a massive 375 pages, full color throughout, and very beautifully done! Book

✨✧ Tin HouseTin House (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Lion, 1971. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A hard rock trio with a hell of a sound – heard here on their one and only album from the 70s – a surprising major label debut on Epic Records, with top-shelf production from Rick Derringer! The album's got a searing burn right from the start – quite a heady brew for this young trio, who come on with the guitar complexities of Johnny Winter at times, and kind of the brooding, bassy bottom you might hear from the James Gang ag their best – although Tin House also have this more youthful, more sneering vibe too – one that's completely their own, and which has made this obscure debut a lost treasure for hard rock collectors over the decades! Titles include "I Want Your Body", "Be Good & Be Kind", "Personal Gain", "Jezebel Give Me Your Lovin", "Lady Of The Silent Opera", "Tomorrow", and "You've Gone Too Far". Beautiful reissue – with bonus tracks that include "Be Good & Be Kind (mono)", "I Want Your Body (mono)", and unreleased tunes "Understand" and "Thanks To My Friends". CD

VariousCan The Glam 2 – Teenage Glampage – 80 Glambusters Rockers, Shockers, & Teenyboppers From The 70s (4CD set) ... CD
7T's (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 49.99
A cool little package that goes way beyond the obvious glam rock numbers you might know from the 70s – and which instead shows just how much that musical moment penetrated the UK scene in the early part of the decade – served up here on a huge variety of tracks that we might not have heard otherwise! The categories in the title certainly get the vibe right – as there's a mix of groundbreaking shockers mixed with hard rockers, alongside some more pop-oriented productions that share the similar love of fuzzy guitars, romping rhythms, and nicely compressed vocals that marked the production modes of the glam generation. As with volume 1, the package features a hefty booklet of notes that really digs deeply into all the many acts within – a batch of 80 artists who include Harley Quinne, Lieuntenant Pigeon, Spiv, The James Boys, Boston Boppers, Billy Shake, Starbuck, Fancy, Mud, Hush, Ted Muldry Gang, Patches, Barry Blue, Bilbo Baggins, Hello, Bo Flyers, Snap, Rosetta Stone, Kenny & The Car Parks, Suzi Quatro, The News, Shabby Tiger, Gene Latter, Brotherhood Of Man, Glitter Band, Hector, and many others. VariousNighttime Lovers Vol 34 – A Fine Collection Of Disco Funk Classics Of The 80s ... CD
PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Boogie, electro, and 80s groove – all sorted out nicely in this killer collection of ultra-rare cuts! As with previous volumes, this edition of Nighttime Lovers shows a side of the 80s that hardly got any play at the time – the more underground work by lesser-known artists, much of which was issued on the bigger labels, but failed to crack the charts! You'll recognize a few familiar names here, but even those are represented by under-discovered corners of their work – and in true early 80s spirit, most tracks here are heavy on beats and keyboards – yet still leave plenty of room for real soul vocals. Titles include "So Delicious" by Point 3 FM, "What Am I Gonna Do" by Streetlife, "Never Gonna Give You Up (12" version)" by Gwendolyn Lassic, "Make It Easy" by Cross-Phyre with Demetrius, "You're My Doll Baby" by Norfolk, "Special Part Of Me (12" version)" by Charles Blackman, "The Same For Me" by California Executives with Ronald Dudley, "Magic Touch" by Gang's Back, "Love I Thought I Never Would Find Love" by James Govan, "Seconds Of Your Love" by Johnny Taylor, and "I Got My Game Plan Working Baby" by Arlene Bailey. ✨✧ Boots For DancingUndisco Kidds – Unreleased Early 80s Punk Funk Masterpiece ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
These guys might be undisco kids, but they're still pretty darn funky – in that best sort of jerky, quirky style that was percolating strongly in the Brit scene of the post-punk years! We'd file Boots For Dancing somewhere in a space next to A Certain Ratio or James White & The Blacks, and maybe Gang Of Four – as the group could clearly play punk, but are driven by much more soulful sounds at the bottom – especially the bassist, who's got this way of setting up the tunes that the guitar can only follow with a sharply-riffing sound! The execution is still very post-punk – there's some darkness in the vocals, and an overall edge to the guitar – but there's no denying the funky element in the music, and at some level these guys do a better job of most of their contemporaries in hitting the right sort of groove, but without ever sounding commercial or mainstream in the process. The little-known story of the group is told in wonderful detail in the notes – to support an album's worth of excellent recordings from the BBC Studios, plus some unreleased work too. Titles include "Salt In The Ocean", "South Pacific", "Just The Ticket", "Style In Full Swing", "Hesitate", "Get Up", "Shadows On Stone", "Money Is Thin On The Ground", "Bend An Elbow Lend An Ear", and "Stand". ✨✧ Grand Funk RailroadOn Time ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The mighty debut of Grand Funk Railroad – a set that has them bursting out of the box as one of the hardest-hitting power trios on the American scene! Like contemporaries ZZ Top or James Gang, these guys have clearly been influenced by the best electric blues of the previous decade or two – but are already turning that inspiration into some harder rocking modes – really prefacing all the guitar hero groups to come along in the next few years! Mark Farner's work on the guitar is fantastic, and he also adds in a bit of harmonica too – but the whole thing is definitely a group effort – thanks to heavy bass from Mel Schacher and pounding drums from Don Brewer! Titles include "Anybody's Answer", "Time Machine", "Into The Sun", "Heartbreaker", "Call Yourself A Man", "Ups & Downs", "TNUC", and "High On A Horse". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Speed, Glue & ShinkiSpeed, Glue & Shinki ... CD
Phoenix (UK), 1972. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a record from a Japanese band who answered to nobody else – a combo who could come on with the ferocity of James Gang or some of their contemporaries, but also hit some even wilder, more experimental moments too – something they definitely do here in the space of the double-length of the album – which mixes full-on jammers full of fuzz and bluesy riffs with some of the weirder moments you might find on the farther reaches of The Beatles' White Album! Vocals are all in English, and given that the album was issued on Atlantic, we're not sure why they never tried to push these guys bigger in the states – as they're better than most of the rest of the period. Titles include "Sniffin & Snortin", "Run And Hide", "Bad Woman", "Red Doll", "Flat Fret Swing", "Calm Down", "Search For Love", "Wanna Take You You", and "Song For An Angel". CD

✨✧ VariousDisco Love 3 – Even More Rare Disco & Soul Uncovered – Compiled By Al Kent ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Plenty of disco love here – a really heartfelt selection of rare club tunes – great little numbers that are as funky and soulful as they are obscure! These aren't the disco hits of the late 70s, but they're also not clunkers that are just rare either – and instead, they're great little tunes that hardly got discovered back in the day – but are brought together here in a wicked collection by collector Al Kent! There's a freshness to the material that takes us way past the obvious – funky basslines, snapping drums, and lots of wonderful keyboards and guitar – all wrapped up in a near-perfect way, and usually set to some smoking vocals too. Many of the cuts here are rare to even our crate-tuned ears – and titles include "Mighty Gents" by The Mighty Gents, "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang, "Oh Baby/Get On Down" by Bo Galigher & TSB, "Something About You" by Moses, "Disco Fever (part 3)" by Rhond Durand, "Disco Music" by Sil Austin, "Hustle On Down (part 3)" by Michael Legrair, "I Want To Be With You" by Gregory Andre & Two Plus Three, "How Long Is Forever" by Frank & James, "Human" by Neo Experience, "Waiting In the Wings" by Marion Javius, and "Is It Wrong" by Magnetic Force. 2CD version features a full mix of all tracks by Al Kent – plus an unmixed CD with 15 individual tracks. ✨✧ VariousFlorida Funk – Funk 45s From The Alligator State 1968 to 1975 (US pressing with bonus track) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's a whole lot more going down in Florida than alligators and Disney World – as you'll hear on this amazing little set! The package follows brilliantly in the tradition of Jazzman's Texas and Midwest Funk compilations – and like those collections, this one uncovers an incredible amount of under-heard music from an especially unlikely source! Florida is usually best remembered as the home of TK disco in the 70s, or contemporary club in more recent years – but back in the late 60s and early 70s, the state was a hotbed of indie funk activity – with loads of artists who were every bit as great as bigger names from points north, all working in an underground network of clubs, studios, and labels. The Jazzman team of Gerald Short and Malcolm Catto have really outdone themselves here – providing not only almost two dozen great funky tracks, but also a wealth of notes and information on each track – all served up in one really beautiful little package! The CD features a whopping 24 pages of notes and pictures all in color – with titles that include "Quit Jive'in" by Pearly Queen, "Cutting Room (Hot Pants)" by Oceanliners, "Super Cool" by Carrie Riley & The Fascinations, "Pure Funk (part 2)" by Delrays, "Do Right Man" by Sam Baker, "All The Time" by Bobby Williams & His Mar Kings, "Butterfly Theme" by Blowfly, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "Funky Fast Bump" by The Outlaw Gang, "Na Na" by Coke, "Get Down" by The Montereys, "90% Of Me Is You" by Vanessa Kendrick, "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma, "Baby Don't Cry" by Third Guitar, "Spider Web" by Weston Prim & Backlash, "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, "Save Me" by James Knight & The Butlers, and "It's Gonna Be A Mess (part 2)" by The Mighty Dogcatchers. US pressing features the bonus track "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma – and different cover art too! CD

An extra-groovy collection of sound library gems – put together in conjunction with the recent film about this overlooked genre of funky music – and featuring a special selection of tracks picked by key stars of the documentary! The work here comes from a variety of important library labels of the 70s – both British and European, presenting the full spectrum of all the wonderful sounds that were made by these musical giants who only got more mainstream exposure many decades later – thanks to the efforts of DJs, crate-diggers, and collectors who brought their funky work to a wider public audience. Harmless (UK), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
We love this series! And why not? The package is a stellar collection of smooth funky tunes from the 70s – nearly all of which have been sampled for hip hop records, which not only makes them a bit familiar, but also give them the "thumbs up" from today's beathead generation. But even without that quality, the tunes work wonderfully together – mixing jazzy soul and smooth funk together with a quality that a rare few talents managed to muster in the 70s! Titles include "Everytime I See You" by Roy Ayers, "King Heroin (instrumental)" by James Brown, "Space Lady" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Can't We Smile" by Johnny Hammond, "Four Play" by Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns, "Just Me & You" by Eramus Hall, "Inside My Love" by Minnie Riperton, "Respect" by Rotary Connection, "Superman Lover" by Johnny Guitar Watson, "Sweet Thing" by Rufus with Chaka Khan, and "Winter Sadness" by Kool & The Gang. Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
The Beatles weren't just the biggest recording act on the scene in the mid 60s, they were also probably the most influential from a songwriting perspective too – such that countless other groups, singers, and musicians picked up their songs and gave them a try, including some tracks that The Beatles never recorded themselves! These aren't just hack cover versions, though – as the artists here clearly love the Fab Four, and are dedicated to unlocking ways that the music inspires them, and makes them seek their own expressions too – expressions that are presented here in full force, in a very cool package that mixes up rock, soul, jazz, folk, and other styles too – all in a massive 85 track set, with very detailed notes. Artists include Jackie Lynton, Marilyn Powell, The Merseymen, Dick Rivers, Mary Wells, Duffy Power, The Coterie, Mark Wynter, Strawberry Fair, Brotherhood, The Buckinghams, Madeline Bell, The Transatlantics, Count Basie, Jimmy James, Spanky & Our Gang, Zoot, Junior Parker, Jackie Trent, The Four Preps, PJ Proby, Mae West, Five Man Electrical Band, Dave Baby Cortez, and many others. Lean 70s genius from the great Gabor Szabo – a set that has him electrifying the sort of vibe he created on Impulse Records in the 60s – but all without ever sounding too slick or commercial! The group here is nice and lean – supervised by Bob James, who plays piano and organ, alongside more Rhodes from Mike Wofford – with bass from Wolfgang Melz and drums from Bobby Morin. Without any larger charts or horns, there's lots of focus on Gabor's work on the guitar – and his sound is amazing throughout – extremely deft and inventive in his solo style and phrasing, much more upfront than on some of his later soul-influenced albums in the latter half of the 70s.
