James Carter's first album as a leader – and a set that helped mark a place for him as one of the strongest saxophone voices of the 90s! The album has Carter's work on alto, tenor, and baritone saxes set center stage – alongside backing by a trio that features pianist Craig Taborn, but which allows plenty of space for Carter to dominate the sound with his deeply soulful tone and often-pyrotechnic approach to his solos. There's some occasional moments that go a bit over the top, in a "hey look at me" sort of mode – but they're nicely offset by a deeper spirit that appreciates the traditions that inform Carter's sound, and which made the record a real standout in the early 90s. There's nothing prehistoric about this set – as saxophonist James Carter's working here in an angular mode that's strikingly modern, despite the "classics" in the title! The tunes are all familiar ones, but they're recast by Carter with a deep tone on tenor, alto, and soprano sax – one that recalls the freshness of Sonny Rollins during his most creative period, but which also is recorded here with a bit more looseness and sense of freedom. A landmark concert from the mid 80s – one held to honor the resurrection of the Blue Note label, featuring a wealth of some of the best players for the label – from the 80s back to the 50s bebop years. This first volume in the 4 LP series features centered around Herbie Hancock and Bobby Hutcherson, with appearances by Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and James Newton. Side one features the group nicely stretching out on a quintet take of "Canteloupe Island" and a sextet reading of "Record A Me", and side two has a quintet take of "Little B's Poem", a trio take of "Bouquet" and a quartet take of "Hat & Beard". Never-issued work from trumpet genius Woody Shaw – and a set that we'd easily stand next to any of Shaw's classics from this stretch in his career! Part of the strength of the record comes from the man himself, but there's also a really fantastic contribution from the group as a whole – a rock-solid lineup that features Larry Willis on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – plus some really beautiful work from the great Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, who really gets plenty of room to showcase his sometimes-overlooked talents on the the tracks in the set. The group have a modal energy that hearkens back to some of Woody's early 70s material – and titles include "Love Dance", "Round Midnight", "Theme For Maxine", "Stepping Stone", "Seventh Avenue", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Invitation", and "Teotihuacan". Also features a bonus recording from 1981, with Woody in a quartet that features Mulgrew Miller on piano – "We'll Be Together Again". CD
