James Brandon LewisEye Of I ... CD
Anti, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
A much more stripped-down album than some of the other recent efforts from tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis – but in a way that maybe shows his power and potential even more than before! Lewis is tremendous right from the start – blowing with a sense of soul and spirit that's completely captivating – not a voice on the tenor that's aping or channeling others, but very much his own style – personal, but in ways that can bridge worlds too – as he works with just the right balance of accompaniment in the drums of Max Jaffe and cello of Chris Hoffman, who often plucks the instrument in ways that are more like a bass. Jaffe adds in extra percussion at points – and titles include "Womb Water", "Fear Not", "Send Seraphic Beings", "Foreground", "The Blues Still Blossoms", and "Within You Are Answers" – plus a nice take on the Donny Hathaway classic "Someday We'll All Be Free". CD

James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis just keeps getting deeper and deeper with each new release – very different than the artist who first emerged a number of records back, and one with a strong ability to explore the farther sides of the jazz spectrum! That's definitely the case here – as Lewis plays tenor at the head of a quartet with Aruan Ortiz on piano, Brad Jones on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums – a lineup who are more than fluid enough to move with the ideas that flow effortlessly both from the compositional pen of the leader, and his well-crafted, very personal lines on tenor sax! The tunes vary in length, which further deepens the individuality of the set – and titles include "Helix", "Per 1", "Breaking Code", "An Anguish Departed", "Loverly", "Molecular", "Cesaire", and "A Lotus Speaks". ✨✧ James Brandon LewisMolecular Systematic Music – Live ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2022. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An album that feels even more spiritual and soulful than anything we've heard before from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – and that's really saying a lot, given the records he's given us before! There's a lean, open energy to the record – a laidback group that features some especially nice drum work from Chad Taylor, who we always love in such a setting – alongside Aruan Ortiz on piano and Brad Jones on bass – all players who clearly recognize that Lewis needs plenty of space to stretch out, and make these magical notes on his instrument – voicing things in a way that's wonderfully fresh – never too far out, but always with an edge – a great reminder that in the right hands, the tenor continues to be one of the strongest modes of individual expression in jazz. Titles include "A Lotus Speaks", "Of First Importance", "Helix", "An Anguish Departed", "Cesaire", and "Neosho". CD

✨✧ Resilient Vessels (James Brandon Lewis/Patrick Holmes/Ches Smith/Josh Wrner)Resilient Vessels Live At The Cell ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sublime quartet, coming together here for a really unique session – one that's got a very modal vibe mixed with some freer moments served up by a piano-less group with a very special sound! Bassist Josh Werner got the whole project together, and the set's got a rock-solid foundation in his beautiful basslines – spun out alongside the drums of Ches Smith, while James Brandon Lewis solos on tenor and Patrick Holmes on clarinet – both players using these long, soulful lines that perfectly fit the modal movement of the energy! Lewis is especially powerful – the album may be one of his most spiritual recordings ever – and titles include "If Not That", "Gotham Rundown", "Ill Scenario 2", "Embody", "Resilient Vessels", "Exit Realms", and "Green Paper Tea". BrahjaWatermelancholia ... LP
Cortizona (Netherlands), 2023. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A record as unique as its title – a set led by saxophonist Devin Brahja Waldman, but done with a soaring ensemble spirit that takes us back to 70s material by Eddie Gale or The Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe! Part of the record's charm is the presence of vocals from Janice Lowe – a singer who rises and falls with the pulsating rhythms of the record, which get a lot of inspiration from the basswork of Luke Stewart, who's got a very spiritual vibe here. The lineup also includes tenor from James Brandon Lewis, who's as powerful here as on any of his dates as a leader – and additional elements include flute, bass clarinet, piano, trumpet, and drums – working in well-crafted arrangements by Brahja, filled with spirit and soul. Titles include "Accessibility Of Soul", "Sorcery Of Terminology", "Querencia", and "Watermelancholia". LP, Vinyl record album

Alan BraufmanFire Still Burns ... LP
Valley Of Search, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. Titles include "Creation", "Alone Again", "The Fire Still Burns", "Home", and "No Floor No Ceiling". LP, Vinyl record album

Brent Cordero & Peter KerlinSublime Madness ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2023. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A wonderfully weird combination of sounds – one that might almost be called psychedelic jazz at times, yet which also has a more freewheeling quality as well! Brent Cordero plays a very cool combo organ next to piano and synth on the record – in a core trio that features Ryan Sawyer on drums and Peter Kerlin on a variety of basses – which are then augmented by differing contributions from track to track, shaping the color palette of the record in a wonderful way! Players include Daniel Carter on alto and flute, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Jessica Pavone on viola, Aaron Siegel on vibes, and Adam Amram on congas – each making great contributions to the record – on ttles that include "Movement To Protect The People", "Decolonize This Place", "White Supremacy In Black Face", "Pyrrhic", "Between The Carrot & The Stick", and "Affordable For Who". ESP, 2021. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's as political as you might expect from its title, and a great collaboration between bassist William Parker and spoken word artist Patricia Nicholson! Make no mistake, the set's a jazz record first, with Nicholson's words added in over the top – as the rest of the group features superb contributions from James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Davin Brahja Waldman on alto, and either Gerald Cleaver or Francesco Mela on drums – a core combo that would be great enough on its own! Melanie Dyer adds in some stunning viola lines to the record in a few spots – and titles include "Little Black Kid With The Swollen Stomach", "Struggle", "Wilted Light As Flower", "No Joke", and "Flare Up".
