Gizelle SmithRuthless Day ... LP
Jalapeno (Spain), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Gizelle Smith got caught in the rain on the cover – but you'd hardly know that, given the sunny, upbeat vibe of the album! Smith's a singer who's been bubbling under for years, and this sweet little set may be the one that breaks her out to the big time – as the album has her going past the role of just being a female singer with a funk group – into territory that feels much more able to take on the world of mainstream soul! Not that the album's not funky – because it is – but there's a cohesion here between Smith's self-penned lyrics and the contributions of the musicians that's really wonderful – almost at the level of an old school soul production, but at that refreshed level that the London scene gave us many years back. As with some of the greats from those years – like N'Dea Davenport or Carleen Anderson – Smith seems ready to take the world on with her pride and power – on titles that include "Hero", "Scared Of Something", "Love Song", "Ruthless Day", "Twelve", "Hey Romeo", and "Dust". Smoove & TurrellCrown Posada ... CD
Jalapeno (UK), 2016. Used ... $4.99
Smoove & Turrell might have kind of a hokey look on the cover, but they get right down to business on this funky little record – hitting a tight groove that's heavy on influence from both soul and AOR styles from the 70s and early 80s! The music's mostly upbeat and filled with riffing guitar lines and percussion bits – produced with a tightness to match the groove, but a sound that's never too overdone, either – and with plenty of individual elements that show that these guys aren't just slavishly copying their influences, but instead building something great and new of their own. Titles include "50 Days Of Winter", "Crown Posada", "Glass", "Slave To The Blues", "New Jerusalem", "Fight On", "Glue Bag Flags", "No Point In Trying", and "You Could Have Been A Lady". CD

✨✧ FlevansPart Time Millionaire ... LP
Jalapeno (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We first loved Flevans for his albums on the Tru Thoughts label in the first decade of this century – and after a long hiatus, the man is back in action – and somehow sounding funkier than ever! Most of the work here is handled by Flevans/Nigel Evans – but there's a fullness to the whole thing that almost makes you feel like there's a whole funky combo at play – a bit like some of the funk projects we've enjoyed from Shawn Lee – and some of the best cuts here have really strong vocals in the lead, enforcing more of a soul vibe than we remember from the previous albums. Singers include Laura Vane, Sarah Scott, and Elliott Cole – and titles include "Invisible", "It Just Goes", "Who's Got Me", "Right On Top", "Ex Factor", "The Wheel", "Some Day", "Take Your Money", and "Two Steps".
