Where their simultaneously issued Stix has a feel that owes more to studio fiddling and technological trickery, this album mines a more live vein, with less programmed beats, and more emphasis on their playing as a band. Overall though, the vibe is the same, defying easy description in that post ambient, contemporary post rock-Nu Jazz netherland, kind of a thinking man's soundtrack to the chill out room. 10 tracks in all, including "Cinematic", "Animal Chin", "Going Down", "Airborne" and "Low Battery". The long lost 1998 debut from the rubbery electronic jazz dance collective Jaga Jazzist – released for the first time outside of the group's native Norway! The 4 long-ish tracks that make up the original release are far-and-away the earliest material we've heard from the group, and it's great to hear that they had their jazz chops honed to a fine point, even back in the late 90s. The fluid, fluttering sax lines and thick, rubbery bass groove is on board and leading the way for the electronic production. Tracks include "Jaga Ist Zu Hause", "Plym", "Swedish Take-Away" and "Seems To Me" – plus the bonus tracks "Serafin I Jungelen (Jomba Vs. K-Mart & Ravi '97 mix) and "Magazine Part 1 & 2" (Shining Re-Work). CD

The 32 tracks here pretty much stick to the Ninja Tune prototype of innovative turntablist and digital psychedelia that made the Ninja name – some of the better album tracks and singles by DJ Food, Coldcut, Amon Tobin, Mr. Scruff, Kid Koala, Herbaliser, DJ Vadim and others – plus a healthy batch of some of the more group-oriented, song based, or otherwise otherworldly cuts by labelmates like Jaga Jazzist, Cinematic Orchestra, Funki Porcini, Fog, Hexstatic and others. A pretty great little overview of one of the most innovative and successful labels of the last decade or so!
