Jack CostanzoLatin Fever ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $44.99
One of the greatest albums of Latin Jazz ever recorded on the west coast during the 50s – and a landmark session from Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo! The album well earns its "fever" claim – as the set smokes from the very first note – Jack's bongos calling the pace, moving fast and furiously to pull in a jazzy mix of tenor, trumpet, flute, and piano – the latter of which is played by the great Eddie Cano! The whole thing's wonderful – as compelling musically as the great image on the front cover, and without any of the kitsch, tricks, or gimmicks that could sometimes hurt a session like this. No-nonsense Latin jazz all the way through – and filled with great tracks that include "Hornacopia", "Latin Fever", "Bajo Numero Uno", "Sax Con Ritmo", "Drum a Mania", and "Cumbanchero". LP, Vinyl record album
(Ranbow label stereo pressing with deep groove. Vinyl is great. Cover has some light wear, and some very light pen on the model in the cover.)

✨✧ Jack CostanzoMr Bongo ... LP
Clarion, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rare bit of Latin jazz from this mighty percussionist – the man also known to the world as Mr Bongo! The date's Jack's only one for Atlantic Records – and the cuts are short, hard, and fast, with Jack's nimble hands on the bongo highlighted on most cuts, with tight backing behind, keeping the groove nice and fresh! Tracks include "Jack Jack Jack", "Bonco", "Atu", and "Que Dicho E". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light surface wear, some aging, and a small split on the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Jack CostanzoBongo Fever – Jack Costanzo At The Garden Of Allah ... LP
Liberty, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums ever by Mr. Bongo! This one was recorded live at the Garden Of Allah, and it features Jack Costanzo leading up a tight little group of congas/bass/drums/piano, plus some nice tenor work by Jay Corre. Tracks include "Garden Of Allah Bongo", "La Cumparasa", "Birk's Works", "Quiere", and "Bongo Fever". A very tasty bit of Latin jazz, with a sound that's more stripped down and percussive than some of Jack's other LPs! LP, Vinyl record album

Nat King ColeAfter Midnight (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1956. Used ... $19.99
A great album, and one in which Nat King Cole returns to his roots as a jazz singer! The session differs greatly from Nat's other schmaltzy ones from the time, and it features a very "after midnight" sound – with Nat playing and singing backed only by a small combo that includes jazz greats like Harry Edison, Willie Smith, Jual Tizol, and Jack Costanzo. Plus, if that's not enough, this fab CD adds a whopping batch of extra tracks to the original LP – for a total of 18 beauties that sound perfect on a warm summer night, long after the sun has gone down. Titles include "Caravan", "Candy", "What Is There To Say", "You're Looking At Me", and "Blame It On My Youth". Great stuff! CD
(2001 Japanese pressing – in great shape with obi.)

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All StarsHoward Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars Vol 3 ... LP
Contemporary, 1953. Near Mint- ... $7.99
One of the first albums to ever bear the name of Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars – a well-chosen moniker for a record to feature the talents of leading 50s west coasters like Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper, Shelly Manne, Milt Bernhardt, and Herb Geller. The format here is a bit more freewheeling than some other Lighthouse sessions – as the mood changes up from track to track – offering up some great Latin on a few tunes (one with Jack Costanzo and another with Carlos Vidal on percussion), a bit of R&B tenor wailing, and some more of the usual Four Brothers-styled horn lines. Titles include "Mambo Los Feliz", "Jazz Invention", "Witch Doctor", "Swing Shift", "Snap The Whip", "Mexican Passport", and "Viva Zapata No 1". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s OJC pressing. NOTE – Cover is lightly stained and wavy at the top 3 inches, with dark stains at the corners.)

✨✧ VariousPopcorn Exotica – R&B, Soul, & Exotica Rockers From The 50s & 60s ... CD
Croydon Municipal (UK), 1950s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Exotica sounds, but with an especially soulful feel – which makes the tracks a perfect choice for this excellent collection! The work is in a special place between exotic instrumentals, teen pop, and deeper soul of the late 50s and early 60s – and most numbers here have that special balance you'll find in the popcorn soul underground – the kind of midtempo steppers that have really been getting a lot of play on dancefloors in recent years – especially when you want to cool off a bit from Northern Soul! As with other titles on the Croydon Municipal label, the track selection is divine – and titles include "The Riddle Of The Papawhos" by Danny Staton, "Call Of The Jungle" by Carl Stevens, "Cafe Bohemian" by The Enchanters, "The Web" by Abie Baker, "Tabou" by The Jokers, "On A Tropical Island" by Anna Valentino, "Little Indian Girl" by Billy & The Moonlighters, "Cat Walk" by Jack Costanzo, and "Arabia" by The Delcos. ✨✧ Marty Paich, Herbie Harper, Larry Bunker, et alJazz City Workshop ... LP
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An excellent swinging Bethlehem session from the mid 50s – one that's recorded in LA, but with a sound that's way hotter than most of the label's other west coast sides! The group's extremely tight – and features Marty Paich on piano as the leader, next to great trombone from Herbie Harper and vibes from Larry Bunker! Bunker's vibes offer a nice contrast to the usual smooth west coast group from the time – as he hits the bars with a nice hard clang that wakes everyone up to groove – and Jack Costanzo is on bongos on all tracks, and he adds a great little kick that keeps things fresh, too. Mickey Lynne sings vocals on "That Old Black Magic", and all other tunes – like "Zing! Went The Strings", "Blues In The Closet", and "The Natives Are Restless Tonight" – are instrumental.
