✨✧ JVC ForceDoin' Damage (180 gram pressing) ... LP
B-Boy/Demon (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A well-remembered set from JVC Force – a group who were maybe most notable at the time as being one of the best labelmates of Boogie Down Productions on B-Boy Records – and who should have been able to give the world a lot more music than they did, thanks to the strength of this album! At a time when so many of their obscure contemporaries were just hitting here and there with singles, JVC do a great job of serving up this full length album – very down to earth, and hard but nicely never trying too hard either – on cuts that include their classic "Strong Island", plus "You'll Like It Too", "Stylin' Lyrics", "Puppy Love", "The Force Is Buggin", "The Move", "Doin' Damage", "Nu Skool" and "The Force Is The Boss". Count Basie88 Basie Street (XRCD LP pressing) ... CD
Pablo/JVC, 1983. Used ... $29.99
Very fluid later work from Count Basie – a set that has that nice open-ended Pablo Records approach, but which still comes across with that brilliant Basie groove that first emerged most strongly in the 50s! Players are a mix of young and old, and the group includes Grover Mitchell and Booty Wood on trombones, Sonny Cohn and Jim Crawford on trumpets, John Williams on baritone, Eric Dixon on tenor and flute, Kenny Hing on tenor, Chris Woods on alto and flute, Joe Pass on guitar, and Cleveland Eaton on bass. Tracks are on the long side, and titles include "88 Basie Street", "Bluesville", "The Blues Machine", "Contractor's Blues", "Katy", and "Sunday At The Savoy". CD

Richard TeeNatural Ingredients (limited Japanese paper sleeve) ... CD
Tappan Zee/JVC (Japan), 1980. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
A bit more electric than you might guess from the "natural" in the title – but a great set of keyboards from the mighty Richard Tee – one of his few albums as a leader back in the day! The set's produced by Bob James, and has a groove that's not unlike some of James' own smoother fusion from the end of the 70s – a style that still has a fair bit of jazz in the mix, but which also shines with some warmer R&B touches as well. Players on the set include Tom Scott on saxes, Eric Gale on guitar, and Steve Gadd on drums – and some of the best numbers have a nicely stripped-down approach. Titles include "The Nut's Off The Screw", "Now", "Tell It Like It Is", and "Us". CD

✨✧ Barney KesselPoll Winners (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Contemporary/JVC, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A simple but elegant set from the west coast scene of the 50s – one that features the trio of "poll winners" Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – all coming together in tight formation for the set! There's a well-crafted mood to the record that's way more than just "stars in the studio jamming" – and tunes are focused nicely, and often dominated by Kessel's solo work, which is clearly the strongest draw to the record. Titles include the original "Minor Mood", plus west coast readings of jazz standards like "Green Dolphin Street", "Jordu", "Mean To Me", and "You Go To My Head". CD
(Out of print XRCD pressing – comes in a cool hardbound book!)

✨✧ Gene AmmonsBoss Tenor (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Prestige/JVC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" style of rhythm that was used strongly at the start of the 60s – with Ray Barretto on percussion, alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The style is nice and echoey – a mode that works well not only here, but on most of the 22 other albums that Ammons went onto record during the next 2 years! Titles include "Close Your Eyes", "Canadian Sunset", "Hittin' The Jug", "Confirmation", and "Blue Ammons". CD

✨✧ Miles DavisBags Groove (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Prestige/JVC, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – carving out the tune in a nicely modern idiom. The rest of the set features work by Miles in a quintet with Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver – again with support from Heath and Clarke – on tunes that include 2 versions of "But Not For Me", plus early recordings of Sonny Rollins' standards "Oleo", "Airegin", and "Doxy". ✨✧ Johnny GriffinLittle Giant (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Riverside/JVC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". CD

✨✧ Wynton KellyKelly Blue (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Riverside/JVC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little session from Wynton Kelly – one that has him breaking out of the lyrical roots of his trio work, and hitting some harder notes as a leader of a larger hardbop group! The album features Kelly working in both trio and sextet format – the latter with players who include Nat Adderley, Bobby Jaspar, and Benny Golson; and the former with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb (who also play with the sextet). The sextet tracks are the ones that we really love here – as they tend to feature 2 long original numbers by Kelly – much more open than usual, and in a mode that was rarely captured as well on Wynton's albums as a leader. The trio sides are still nice too, though – although a bit more like some of his other sides – and the album features 6 tracks in all, titles that include "Kelly Blue", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "On Green Dollphin Street", "Keep It Moving", and "Old Clothes". Also includes two bonus tracks. CD

✨✧ Native SonNative Son ... CD
JVC/Victor (Japan), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet Japanese fusion grooving from Native Son – a group who were really at the forefront of the mainstream fusion sound flowing from the east at the end of the 70s! The group's headed by Takehiro Honda, who plays some excellent funky solos on Fender Rhodes and other electric keyboards – and the rest of the band's pretty great too, and has a tight polished jazzy sound that would make the best American 70's studio groups weep! Nice groovers include the funky "Heat Zone", the mellow "Breezin & Dreamin", the spacey "Twilight Mist", and the Brazilian-tinged groover "Whispering Eyes". CD
(Out of print, 2016 UHQ CD pressing with K2 HD Pro Mastering – includes obi.)

✨✧ Sonny RollinsRollins Plays For Bird (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Prestige/JVC, 1956. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The tenor of Sonny Rollins pays tribute to the alto of Charlie Parker – in a landmark set that's one of Sonny's real standout 50s sessions for Prestige! Sonny's tone on the tenor is proud and bold throughout – able to shift and turn in the spirit of Bird, but also very much in Rollins' own highly inventive mode as well. The group features Max Roach on drums – who cut a contemporary Bird tribute of his own on Mercury – plus Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Wade Legge on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Titles include a "Bird Medley" that takes up all of side one – featuring "Old Folks", "Star Eyes", "Just Friends", and "My Little Suede Shoes", all given the Parker twist – and side 2 features a great long cut called "Kids Know", plus a shorter take on "I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face". CD features 1 bonus track. CD

✨✧ VariousVinyl Make Me Funky – 70 Minutes Of Dopeness – Mixed By DJ Koco aka Shimokita ... CD
Octave (Japan), 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool trip through the world of 80s hip hop – particularly the hippest tracks from labels that include Fresh, Sleeping Bag, Warlock, B-Boy, and Idlers Records – all laid out here in a non-stop mix that's almost 70 minutes long! The package pulls together classics from the mid 80s east coast scene, plus some lesser-known album cuts too – and DJ Koko has a great way of keeping things focused on the core of most tunes, while also really making the records leap from the decks throughout the mix. 38 tracks in all – including "Tall Dark & Handsome" by Tall Dark & Handsome, "B Boy Document" by Krown Rulers, "Strong Island (blue mix)" by JVC Force, "You Can't Break B Boys" by Baby Doll, "Bridge Is Over" by Boogie Down Productions, "Going Way Back" by Just Ice, "Let's Jam (inst)" by DJ Mate & The Latin MCs, "It's Yours" by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay, "Can't Get Enough" by Soul Dimension, "The Bronx Is Back" by Tall Dark & Handsome, "Back To The Beat" by Todd Terry, "Free Flow" by Just Ice, "Hardcore Hip Hop" by Mantronix, "Get Retarded" by MC EZ & Troup, and "Soul Food" by Tuff Crew.
