LaurneaNew Territory (Japanese version) ... CD
JVC (Japan), 2002. Used ... $9.99
New Territory indeed – as Laurnea's third album has her really stepping out as a singer, hitting a whole new range of expression that was only hinted at on previous albums! The record is genius – a mix of NuSoul and folksy touches, including a lot of well-placed acoustic guitar, which provides an earthy contrast with the warmth of Laurnea's vocals and the keyboards used on the set. Production is wonderful, too – at once totally professional, but almost invisible, as the album's sweetly crafted songs drift out in a wave of sensuous sound, showing Laurnea as one of the best-developed soul singers of our generation! Titles include "Day Dreamin", "Music Makes", "Stay", "Fix It", "Fly", "Keep Your Head Up", "Hey", "My Thang", and "All Night". CD
(Out of print. Small index sticker on disc label and obi.)

Lee RitenourGentle Thoughts ... LP
JVC (Japan), 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
A classic bit of Japanese fusion from the 70s – and a set that managed to circulate pretty heavily on these shores at the time, which is quite an accomplishment for an expensive piece of import vinyl! That track record is no surprise, though, given that the group's really a showcase for a range of top-shelf American fusion players – Lee Ritenour at the head on guitars, joined by both Patrice Rushen and Dave Grusin on keyboards and Fender Rhodes, Ernie Watts on sax and flute, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Harvey Mason on drums – a killer CA lineup who keep things lean and soulful throughout! The album's almost an extension of the Rushen groove over at Prestige, with plenty of soulful moments, and an approach to fusion that's quite far from commercial albums of the time – even from some of Ritenour's other work. The title track is a great remake of Herbie Hancock's "Gentle Thoughts" – and other tunes include "Captain Fingers", "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Chanson", "Captin Caribe/Getaway", and "Meiso". LP, Vinyl record album
(Direct Disk pressing. Cover has a small sticker spot on front and some wrinkles from application on back.)
