JD AllenQueen City ... CD
Savant, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A really powerful solo album from JD Allen – maybe the first we've ever heard from the tenor saxophonist, and a set that's got a very different vibe than some of his recent outings with groups! Allen recorded the music during the height of lockdown in 2020, at a time when he'd had to step back from performing live and collaborating with others – a moment he used to get back to basics on his instrument, and begin to re-explore all the things that first made being a saxophonist so important to him. There's definitely a sense of isolation and melancholy here – as you might expect – but there's also a feeling of hope and new inspiration, a quiet message from a dark time that's great to have on record. Titles include "Nyla's Sky", "Maude", "OTR", "Vernetta", "Queen City", "Gem & Eye", "Kristian With A K", and "Wildwood Flower". CD

✨✧ JD AllenGrace ... CD
Savant, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sharp tenor from the great JD Allen – a very striking set that's filled with all original compositions – work that really shows the way that Allen's grown strongly as both a writer and player in recent years! There's a sense of darkness to the record right from the start – a brooding intensity that finds a way to both move forward and fold back on itself – this kind of elliptical mode that's very compelling, and brought into strong focus by a quartet that features Eldar Djangirov on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Jonathan Barber on drums. Titles include "Grace", "Chagall", "Load Star", "Cross Damon", "Detroit", "Mass", and "The Little Dipper". CD

Quincy DavisQ Vision ... CD
Qtime, 2021. Used ... $9.99
Drummer Quincy Davis has a very visionary approach here – music that makes a bold statement for his role as a leader, as Davis works here with three different groups on a strong set of original material! The mix of players is wonderful – shading in and adding voice to Quincy's music in different ways – sometimes with a septet that includes Philip Dizack on trumpet, Myron Walden on alto, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and JD Allen on tenor – other times with a quintet that has the great Warren Wolf on vibes and Dayna Stephens on tenor. There's also two trio tracks – with excellent piano from Xavier Davis and bass from Ugonna Okegwo – and in the other groups, Adam Birnbaum handles piano, with either Richie Goods or Vicente Archer on bass. Davis has this great way of blending darkness and light in his compositions, in a style that's echoed strongly by the soloists – on titles that include "Shorter Days", "Nat Turner", "Lost In Thought", "The Creeper", "Outbreak", and "Slippery Slope". ✨✧ Orrin EvansLiberation Blues ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful session from pianist Orrin Evans – one of the most richly talented players of his generation – always great, no matter what the setting! We've recently dug Evans in trio and larger group formats – but this set's got him cooking strongly with a quintet – a tight lineup that has Sean Jones on trumpet and JD Allen on tenor – but each dropping out a bit near the end to let Evans showcase his trio as well! The horns hold sway on most of the record, though – including the wonderful Liberation Blues Suite – which is penned for Dwayne Burno, and features both his own music and tunes by Evans as well. The set continues with great sounds that really forward the righteous vibe – and titles include "A Free Man", "Liberation Blues", "Juanita", "Devil Eyes", "Simply Green", "Anysha", "Meant To Shine", and "Mumbo Jumbo". Also includes a bonus encore – "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", with vocals by Joanna Pascale. CD
