Pay Jay, Early 2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
J Dilla at his grittiest, most rugged & raw – in both the production and rhyme realms – with all beats and rhymes by the Dilla himself! This set originally opened our ears to a different side of Dilla, a harder hitting aesthetic, with beats and grooves from out of leftfield that draw you in and hypnotize. This 2018 2CD version features the original and alternate mixes for the Ruff Draft EP on CD1 and Dilla's instrumental versions on CD2 – Titles include "Let's Take It Back", "Reckless Driving", "Nothing Like This", "The $", "Make'Em NV", "Crushin'", "Wild" (a rack that's nothing short of mindblowing – a minimalist masterpiece), "Take Notice", "Rock On" and more. 30 tracks on 2CDs! ✨✧ J DillaJay Stay Paid ... LP
Nature Sounds, 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 27 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla! ✨✧ J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. Stomp GordonDamp Rag – The Killa Dilla From Columbus, Ohio (10 inch LP & CD) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $34.99 46.99
The lost legacy of Stomp Gordon – a hard-wailing artist who should have been a crucial force in the early years of rock and roll – had an early death not taken him away from us all too soon! Stomp plays piano with the dexterity of the best postwar players of his generation, but also sings in an upbeat R&B mode too – mixing his work on the keys with his deeply soulful vocals – on tracks that are almost all originals, and full of fire throughout! Gordon recorded this music for Decca, Mercury, Chess, and Savoy – and the set features ten tracks on a cool 10" LP, and seventeen on the included CD – which also features some other non-Gordon material too. Titles include "Damp Rag", "Dragnet", "Oooh Yes", "Ride Superman Ride", "Hide The Bottle", "What's Her Whimsey Dr Kinsey", "Devil's Daughter", "The Grind", and "Don't Do Me That Way". ✨✧ Dan CharnasDilla Time – The Life & Afterlife Of J Dilla, The Hip Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm (hardcover) ... Book
Macmillan, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really well-done book on one of the greatest figures in hip hop during the past few decades – a genius who was taken from us all too soon, and who finally gets the deep attention he deserves in this hefty volume! The book is neither one of those salacious tales of a hip hopper who went too far, nor one of the more academic looks at the qualities of their music – and instead, it's a very thoughtful, well-researched project that really opens up all the reasons why the unique touch of James Yancey has left such an impression in the years since his death. The author goes into great detail – not just into Dilla's life, but with an understanding of the tools used to create his music, the way they changed over time, the shifting level of interaction he had with the larger world of hip hop, and the aftermath of his sudden passing from this planet. The book is over 450 pages, hardcover, and features copious notes to support the research and dedication of the author! Book

Jakarta (Germany), 2017. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Illa J stretches out creatively more than ever before – working with producer Calvin Valentine and delivering probably his strongest solo record to date! Illa J has long since proven his worth outside of the long shadow cast by his brother Dilla, but he's really come into his own now – doing more singing on this one without leaving rhymes behind, staying rooted in truthful Detroit hip soul despite relocating Montreal, and really laying down one quality, timeless track after another here. Includes "Intro (Turn It Up)" featuring Detroit fellow Dank, "Sam Cook", "I Know", "Photosynthesis", "Snow Beach", "Silencers" feat Moka Only, "Detroit Bad Boys", "Maureen", "Home" and "7 Mile". CD

Ghostface KillahFishscale – Exclusive Radio Advance ... LP
Def Jam, 2006. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
Ghostface brings some real hip hop to latter day Def Jam – his best album since Supreme Clientele – and possibly '06 hip hop album of the year! Fishscale features appearances by the Wu Tang Clan & Theodore Unit, Ne-Yo, Megan Ward and others on the mic – but it's the stable of producers that helps make this one of the best above ground hip hop albums we've heard in a long time. MF Doom puts his Metal Fingerz behind the boards for a bunch of tracks, and the legendary Pete Rock handles a few – with additional work by J Dilla, Just Blaze, Lewis Parker and others. Ghost brings a literal lyrical focus to a number of the tracks – but he's still spraying words all over the damn place – and the best tracks are just as thrilling as his surreal word bombs of yore. Tracks include "Shakey Dog", "Kilo" feat Raekwon, the excellent Just Blaze-produced anthem "The Champ", "9 Milli Bros" feat Wu Tang Clan, "Beauty Jackson", "RAGU" feat Raekwon, "Be Easy" feat Trife, "Dogs of War" feat Raekwon & Theodore Unit, "Barbershop" and more. A classic masterpiece from J Dilla – a record that set the tone for countless hip hop releases in years to come – but which still shows Jay Dee as one of the smartest, sharpest, most forward-thinking producers to rule the roost! The set's got some incredible live instrumentation – lots of funky drums from Karriem Riggins, and a wealth of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards from Dwele – two artists brought along from the Detroit underground by Dilla, in a lineup that also includes work from Frank N Dank, Blu, Phat Kat, and Beej. The whole thing is fantastic, this amazing blend of instrumentals and vocal numbers that show that hip hop had plenty of new territory to open up in the 21st century – on titles that even include tributes to some key inspirations – like "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd). The whole thing is classic – and other cuts include "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". CD

Platinum Pied PipersTriple P ... CD
Ubiquity, 2005. Used ... $2.99
The long-awaited debut from Platinum Pied Pipers – an incredible set that melds underground soul, deep hip hop, and innovative club groove into a cohesive sound all its own! The PPP is essentially the duo of Waajeed (a founding member of Slum Village and frequent Jay Dee collaborator) and guitar-and-keys wizard Saadiq – who bring in guest vocalists and producers that give the record the appealing sprawl of a tight collective. Like fellow traveler Amp Fiddler, the crew seamlessly mixes a thumping tapestry of styles, and weave it all together in a multi-layered finished pattern that even the most ambitious peers can't touch. A true instant classic that'll be as much of a reference point in the years to come as Jay Dee's earlier efforts – if not more so! Dilla and SA-RA guest on the innovative hip hop styled tracks, as does MCs Invincible and Lacks, but the progressive soul gets intensive focus – with vocals by Tiombe Lockhart and Georgia. Other guests include Spacek, Zeno and Roijer. Essential! 16 tracks on the CD: "Shotgun Intro" and "Act Like You Know" featuring Jay Dee, "Your Day Is Done" feat Georgia, "Deep Inside" featuring S-Ra Creative Partners, "Fever" feat Zeno, "Stay With Me" and "Now Or Never" feat Tiombe Lockhart, "Detroit Winter" feat Invincible, "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" feat Roijer and more! A full-length set of work from Marc Rapson, created at a time when he was mostly adding his talents to projects by others – and always turning out to be a fantastic force in the music! This set has Marc all on his own – nicely minimal backings and beats, often with a lead keyboard line that does all sorts of fantastic things throughout – sometimes jazzy, sometimes more tied to the groove – with a beautiful sense of spacing that still makes the record sound completely fresh, more than a decade after it was created! The set features two vocal numbers – "Love Is All" with Liz Elensky and "The Ray Rah" with Replife – plus a killer take on the Roy Ayers tune "Sunshine", and other cuts that include "The Kalimba", "In Spirit", "Our Here", "Pure Imagination", "Dark Vs Light", "I May Do Things", and "Return To Dilla Suite". Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. Moses Dillard & The Tex Town DisplayMoses Dillard & The Tex Town Display (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Tex Town/Big Pink (Korea), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
The only full album we've ever seen from Moses Dillard – a name that we know from a few funky 45s back in the day – and equally great here in the space of a 33rpm record! On side one, the music is a wicked blend of southern soul and funk – served up from the South Carolina scene, with an approach that's different than some of the Memphis or Muscle Shoals modes of the period – nicely distinct, at a level that makes the album shine on both groovers and slower-burners – with a balance that's right up there with the great Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers album on Motown! The songs are great – and Dillard's vocals are wonderful, done with the best sort of deep soul vibe of the time – balanced out in arrangements by Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns. Side two is equally great, but in a completely different way – as it features Dillard playing guitar in this mighty cool combo with Clayton Ivey on piano – a real soul jazz-styled performance, with Moses using all these chromatic edges – a bit like Eddie Fisher on his famous Third Cup album. Titles include "Are You For Real", "You Can't Laugh It Off", "Won't Somebody Help Me", "Cry Like A Baby", "Bring Your Dreams To Me", "T Bone Steak", "Tribute To Wes", and "Matchmaker". CD

Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Jazzmeia HornLove & Liberation ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
We really loved Jazzmeia Horn on her debut, but this time around she really knocks it out of the park – to a point where we're ready to list her among our top few favorite jazz vocalists – a short list that includes Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Shirley Horn! We're not easy with praise like that – but in this case, it's very well-deserved – as the record is one of those jazz vocal sets that comes along once in a blue moon – all original material by the singer, handled with a soulful, soaring style that's made even better by the small combo on the set – a great group that features Victor Gould on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Josh Evans on trumpet, Jamison Ross on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Horn's got an ability to both deliver a straight lyric with just the right mix of soul and emotion, and take off on jazz-styled flights as well – and her sense of inflection is amazing – at once very old school, like few "jazz" singers can do these days – but also instantly personal and contemporary. Titles include "Free Your Mind", "Out The Window", "Only You", "When I Say", "Legs & Arms", "Reflections Of My Heart", and "I Thought About You". CD

McClenty also penned a few of his own tunes for the set – including some surprisingly nice ballads – which are mixed here with takes on tunes by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Herbie Nichols, and Stevie Wonder. Cadillac (UK), 1976. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 18.99
Unreleased genius from British altoist Mike Osborne – and a set that easily matches his classic albums of the 70s! The double-length set was recorded live in the mid 70s, and is issued here for the first time – a wonderfully tight trio outing that features Osborne's alto alongside the bass of Harry Miller and drums of Tony Levin – in a mode that's decidedly Coltrane-influenced, and which has a searching, spiritual quality that's even deeper than most other British work of the time! We've never heard Osborne play with so much feeling, and Miller's basswork is wonderful too – really underscoring the sound with a full, rich quality that grounds the whole proceedings nicely – a soaring, majestic energy that's a far cry from some of the unstructured freedom from other Brit groups of the same stretch. Tremendous throughout – and with cuts that include "One For George", "Alfie", "Almost Home Kathy", "More Mike", "Ossie's Opener", "Awakening Spirit", and "Cousin Mary". CD

An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! The range of sounds is really wonderful – with a feel that's somewhere between a Trunk Records or Finders Keepers compilation – and titles include "Intro (Excerpt)" by The Muzzy Band, "Spacing Out" by The Invaders, Diska Limba Man" by Medico Doktor Vibes, "Music Slave" by Jade, "White Panther" by Arcesia, "Never Come Back" by Boa, "ESP Switch" by Michael Farneti, "6.4 = Makeout" by Gary Wilson, "Just To Say Goodbye" by Russ Saul, "Cadillac Woman" by Stephen David Heitkotter, "Piledriver" by Dennis The Fox, "Old Time Feeling" by Circuit Rider, and "666" by Ray Torske. Sinecure/Now Again, 1960s/1970s/1980s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Cadillac (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really wonderful overview of sounds from the contemporary jazz scene in Finland – put together with a fantastic ear for the heady grooves and really fresh solo modes that have been bristling up on the scene of late – all of which really come together in the impeccable track selection on the set! Most of these tracks have a highly rhythmic pulse, but at a level that's very different from more familiar jazz funk or fusion – with percussion and basslines that are often nice and earthy, and a very different sense of timing that further makes the tracks stand out! Groups and instrumentation vary in a nice way throughout the collection, and the whole thing is the sort of set that will have you soon digging deeper to unlock some of the best sounds from this overlooked scene. Titles include "Dark Sparkle" by JAF Trio, "En Ut" by UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, "Bilawal" by Superposition, "Imprologue" by Kari Ikonen, "Zigenerskan" by Emma Salokoski Ilmiliekki, "Niin On Kehto Tyhjilaan" by Hot Heroes & Iro Haarla, and "Garag" by Riitta Paakki. The mid 90s instant classic! Outkast's debut set hem up as one of the most distinctive hip hop duos ever, right out of the gate, but it also helped to established the freewheeling, funky dirty south sound, thanks to genius Organized Noize production! The Outkast sound would get bigger and more wildly eclectic on the records to follow Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but the consistent, funky southern swagger on this one holds up incredibly well. It sounds fresh to this day! Includes breakout hit "Player's Ball", "Crumblin Erb", "Git Up, Git Out", "Claimin' True", "Funky Ride", "Soouthernplayalisticadillacmuzik", "Ain't No Thang", "CallOf Da Wild", "Hootie Hoo" and a couple of interludes. ✨✧ Dillard & ClarkFantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark/Through The Morning Through The Night (with bonus tracks) ... CD
A&M/BGO (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two seminal albums from Doug Dillard and Gene Clark – back to back in a single set, and with bonus tracks too! Fantastic Expedition is a mellow masterpiece of sunshine country rock from Dillard & Clark – a duo that featured Gene Clark of the Byrds and Doug Dillard of the Dillards – in a wonderful blend of Cali longhair harmonies, back porch psych, and expert Byrds-y tunefulness! Dillard provides lots of great banjo and some chirping fiddle – along with mandolin and chiming acoustic guitars that bring a bit of bluegrass into the sound – but the record has California written all over it thanks to the vocal harmonies and wistful tune craft. Really close to perfection – and deserves as much praise as the better known country rock benchmarks of the era – including the early two classics by Flying Burrito Brothers. Tracks include "Out On The Side", "She Darked The Sun", "Train Leaves Here This Mornin", "With Care From Somewhere", "Git It On Brother", "In The Plan", and "Don't Come Rolling". Through The Morning Through The Night is the amazing second album from the great duo of Gene Clark and Doug Dillard – and a record that's maybe even better than the first! Even though the set's a key part of the late 60s Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers legacy – the vibe is probably more like the latter than the former – that is, more country than rock – in a way that really has the Clark/Dillard team getting even more confident with that side of their sound – drawing both on Doug's roots, and pointing the way toward his years to come. Clark provides some excellent songwriting, and his vocals are what really set the album apart – and the album also features some backing vocals from Donna Washington, amidst a mostly acoustic lineup that includes bluegrass instrumentation – and guest work from Sneaky Pete Kleinow on steel guitar, Chris Hillman on mandolin, and Bernie Leadon on guitar. Titles include "So Sad", "Corner Street Bar", "I Bowed My Head & Cried Holy", "Kansas City Southern", "No Longer A Sweetheart Of Mine", "Polly", "Four Walls", and "Through The Morning Through The Night". Bonus tracks include "Why Not Your Baby", "Lyin Down The Middle", and "Don't Be Cruel". CD

✨✧ Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". Atlantic, 1970s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic run of records – music that firmly established John Prine as one of the most inventive singer/songwriters of the 70s! Prine rose up out of the Chicago folk scene of the 60s – but he soon became something different than just a folk or country singer – even though he was admired strongly by both worlds of music. Instead, John's songs took on this new sense of wit and bite learned from folk, but delivered in a style that was maybe less preachy – but also not as rural as the vibe of country tunesmiths who were changing things up at the time. There's definitely echoes of the work of Kris Kristofferson or Shel Silverstein in Prine's words – but the execution is completely his own, and transforms wonderfully over the course of these records – at a level that shows just how much the singer was able to keep ahead of the pack, and keep his contributions relevant over the years. The box features the full albums John Prine, Diamonds In The Rough, Sweet Revenge, Common Sense, Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – in LP replica sleeves, with new notes, and poster inserts too. Very groovy work from these two Brit sound library greats – loads of funky tunes, and great keyboards too – all served up in a massively funky record that was never issued to the public at large! Had this set hit the real record racks in 1974, it might well have challenged some of the greatest material from George Duke or Herbie Hancock – as the tunes are mostly funky, and feature lots of wonderful work on a wide variety of keyboards – sometimes getting all cool and wigged-out, even when the grooves are upbeat – a bit like Herbie in his Sextant years! E Live is definitely a master on the keys – able to bring some jazzier elements into his lines here – as he steps out strongly in a mostly instrumental setting over some bassy beats and heady basslines – on titles that include "Mood Swing", "I Feel It", "Friday Night Flight", "Cadillac Breeze", "Traffic Jam", "Stranger Dayz", "You Got Me", "City Girl", "Slapadelic", and "Wise Up Rise Up". Elia and Elizabeth look wonderfully sweet on the cover, and they sound wonderfully sweet within – harmonizing nicely over a set of arrangements that are filled with all sorts of really cool and groovy elements! The pair get great help from arranger Jimmy Salcedo, whose La Onda Tres combo backs them up – often using a lot of electric piano, organ, and slightly funky rhythms in the background – which makes the whole thing sounds fantastic, no matter what the voices might bring in! Cadillac (UK), 2020. Used ... $4.99
Tori Handsley may not look like your usual jazz musician on the front cover – but she's part of the contemporary London scene, and really breaks out here alongside some killer drums from the great Moses Boyd! Handley plays both piano and electric harp with lots of cool effects – and the trio also features this round, rolling basswork from Ruth Goller – a player who's a perfect counterpart for Boyd's nonstop sense of energy! This is the first we've ever heard of Tori – and she's wonderful on piano, playing with this bold sense of flow that should get her plenty of attention in years to come – and her use of the electric harp is equally great, and never gimmicky at all – a very cool instrument that's often processed in ways that really bring out the richness of its sound. Sahra Gure sings on three of the album's tracks, but the main vibe is instrumental – and titles include "Polar Retreat", "Rivers Of Mind", "Home", "Settling Into The Sun", "Kestrel", "As We Stand", "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind", and "Convolution". Cadillac (UK), 1978. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 18.99
A tremendous early recording from David Murray – recorded in London (as you'd guess by the title), but with all the best spirit of his early loft jazz sides! There's a tightness here that's missing from some of Murray's other albums of the period – a sense of soulful, spiritual swing that only seems to make the album open up even more, and which allows for some incredibly rhythmic solo work from Murray. We love this one to death, and would easily rank it as one of our favorite David Murray recordings ever – and would also say that the album's noteworthy for some great work from Butch Morris on cornet and Curtis Clark on piano – working in a quintet with Brian Smith on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Titles include "Jas Van", "Secret Of The Circle", "Murray's Steps", and "Cancion De Amor En Espanol" – and the CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Nairobi" and "Flowers For Albert". CD

A landmark album – both for Outkast and the Atlanta scene too – as the set soars forward from the territory of their debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik – with crazy, free flowing, inventive rhymes and soulful outer space grooves that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL scene! While some of that city's work would soon lapse into cliche, that's definitely not the case here – as Dre and Big Boi rhyme over these wonderfully laidback grooves that have a wicked southern fried vibe. Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2002. New Copy ... $9.99
An excellent group that really lives up to their name – a very soulful quintet, with a groove that's right up there with the best hardbop of the late 50s and early 60s! The ensemble's led by Dutch pianist Cees Slinger, but it features some especially strong work from the hornmen – tenorist Simon Rigter and trumpeter Ruud Bruels, who've got a great way of coming together on the start of the tunes – stating their case with a nice degree of power, then breaking out with really searching, soulful solos – beautifully blown material that we'd rank right up there with any of our favorite older classics. The set list is great too – filled with well-chosen tunes that give the album the solidity of a Blue Note date from the 60s – titles that include "Barbara", "Happy Times", "When We Were One", "The Last Score", "Friday Night At The Cadillac Club", "Song For The Early Worm", and "Silent Majority". The first recording from British piano legend Stan Tracey's "New Quartet" – a group that pairs Tracey and son Clark Tracey with younger players Andrew Cleyndert on bass and Gerard Presencer on trumpet. Tracey's piano is as filled with fresh chords and tones as it ever was, but the sound here is thankfully more inside than on some of his freer recordings of the 70s and 80s – a strong straight jazz vision that still has enough sharper edges to appeal to fans of the British modern jazz sound of years past. There's an especially great chromatic side to the record that we really love – blocks of color and sound that shift in mood as the set moves on, and which make for a far richer recording than we would have expected. A great example of the never-faltering genius of British piano legend Stan Tracey – a series of solo and trio recordings from 1997, recorded after Tracey had passed his 70th year, but was still going strong with an extremely fresh voice on the piano! The solo tracks here are almost even more compelling than the trio ones – never as far out or free as his 70s solo work, but with that undeniable sense of timing that always made his approach to the keys one of the most striking piano styles of the 20th century. The trio features son Clark Tracey on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on bass – and five of the CD's eleven tracks are solo numbers. Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 18.99
Two rare performances from the same evening of music in 1974 – one issued briefly on the album Stan Tracey Alone, one appearing here for the first time ever! CD1 features that Tracey album – an extended solo improvisation titled "Eighty One Plus One", which has Stan really stretching out at this key point in his career – that moment when he'd moved past his more angular, Monkish modes of the 60s – into territory that was much freer, and even more captivating – as Tracey always plays with this sense of timing that holds things together, even as his hands are soaring to the farther reaches of the piano! CD 2 features a duet with alto saxophonist Mike Osborne – also from the same night, and as one extended improvisation titled "Two Part Intention" – which has Tracey building up these layers of sound on piano, while Osborne glides freely over the top in a style that's both modern and soulful at the same time. Great stuff – and a much-needed example of this key moment in British jazz! CD

A straight-up incredible batch of recordings by the Austin singer-songwriter ghost of a legend that is Blaze Foley – a self-destructive character better known to the stars he influenced than he is to the masses (he is the "Drunken Angel" who Lucinda Williams wrote and sang about) – material from the mid-to-late 70s when he was billed as Deputy Dawg and put together here for one of the best compilations on Fat Possum in years! What makes this set so wonderful is the cohesive flow of it. It's solo folk country material recorded in a trio of intimate sessions from February of '76, November of that same year, and September of '78. One of the coolest Korean records you'll ever hope to hear – a set recorded in the mid 70s, but done with the same sort of psychedelic blend of jazz and funk elements you'd hear in Japanese albums from the early part of the decade! These guys use lots of fuzz on their guitars – a tone that's freaky, but a style that's nicely direct – especially when mixed with the strong basslines at the bottom – which almost always set up some sort of groove before the Korean language lyrics come into the mix! Lots of these tunes are the epitome of slow funk at its best – and sound even better with the trippy inflections on guitar, and the unfamiliar language – which really keeps things interesting. Titles are all in Korean, like the lyrics – but even without our ability to tell you their names, we can definitely tell you that they're plenty darn groovy! CD

BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

✨✧ Eri Yamamoto/Chad Fowler/William Parker/Steve HirshSparks ... CD
Mahakala, 2022. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work from a beautifully-balanced group – a set of musicians who do a great job of finding each others spaces and strengths together – yet a record that really stands out for the work on stritch and saxello from Chad Fowler! Both reed instruments aren't that common – you'd be more likely to hear them on 60s records by Roland Kirk or George Braith – and they've got this nice edge that's slightly different than usual saxophone notes, working beautifully alongside the warmer piano work of Eri Yamamoto, the drums of Steve Hirsh, and surprisingly subtle (at times) bass of William Parker! Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Sparks", "In The Garden", "Bob's Pink Cadillac", "Taiko", and "Real World". CD

✨✧ VariousCountry Funk Vol 2 – 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great criss-crossing of modes at the end of the 60s – music that has roots in country, but which comes off with plenty of funk and soul as well – in styles that were burning strong from LA on eastward, all the way across the south at the time! Some of the grooves here might fall into the "swamp rock" mode of the time – while others showcase hip LA artists mixing rootsy elements with tighter studio production – and a few more have genre-crossing country artists trying on some more soulful modes for good measure. The range of work is really great – and quite surprising, too – and the whole thing's got a great look that really illuminates the music within. Titles include "Northeast Texas Women" by Willis Allan Ramsey, "Nobody" by Larry Williams & Johnny Watson, "Collection Box" by Thomas Jefferson Kaye, "Me & Mr Hohner" by Bobby Darin, "Hunger Child Blues" by Townes Van Zant, "California Women" by Hoyt Axton, "Pay Day Give Away" by Bill Wilson, "Shotgun Willie" by Willie Nelson, "Cajun Moon" by JJ Cale, "Sumpin Funky Going On" by Donnie Fritts, and "Don't Let Me Down" by Dillard & Clark. ✨✧ VariousDisco 75 (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1975. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
1975 was a crucial year in the history of disco music – the moment when sounds that had been bubbling under on the east coast in the early part of the decade finally hit both the radio and the record racks in a really massive way! And while the music might soon be bogged down in commercialism and cash-in recordings, the cuts here represent a key moment when all sorts of different artists were picking up the pace, learning the lessons of some of the super-sharp funk groups of the underground scene, and blending those modes with soaring vocals and impeccable production! The collection offers a really great overview of styles here – not just some big hits of the time, but also some overlooked gems, and a number of tracks that feature older artists sounding surprisingly strong in the new disco modes – mixed with just a few very unusual tracks that we're not sure we've ever seen on CD before. The 3CD box features a massive 55 tracks in all – with cuts by Seldon Powell, Armada Orchestra, Black Stash, Doris Duke, Herbie Mann, Moses Dillard, Rhythm Makers, Frankie Valli, Major Lance, Jesus Alvarez, Gene Page, Seeds Of The Earth, Chuck Jackson, Calendar, Rhetta Young, Joe Bataan, Derek Martin, Sylvia, The Reflections, Pat Lundi, Moments & Whatnauts, Glitter Band, Banzai, Brother To Brother, Al Matthews, Universal Mind, Johnny Otis, Soul Train Gang, Beeeny Groy, Juggy Murray Jones, Dooley Silverspoon, and many others! Volume 1 of this incredible series – a treasure trove of 60s soul, all of it music that played big at the legendary Twisted Wheel! The club was one of the early hotbeds of Northern Soul activity in the UK – and the cuts here have a raw-edged, hard-grooving quality that showcases the mix of R&B and soul that was first going down in the scene – pulled together from a range of smaller label 45s, and presented by Ian Dewhirst with track-by-track notes, and some good memories from years back as well! Titles include "Hide & Go Seek" by Bunker Hill, "That's What I Want To Know" by James Carr, "No Sad Songs" by Oscar Toney, "My Elusive Dreams" by Moses & Joshua Dillard, "A Little Bit Of Something" by Little Richard, "It's The Beat" by Major Lance, "Look What You've Done To My Heart" by Shirley & The Shirelles, "The Cheater" by Bob Kuban & The In-Men, "Magic Potion" by Lou Johnson, "I Need Your Love So Desperately" by Peaches & Herb, "Breakin Down The Walls Of Heartache" by The Bandwagon, "Everybody's Going To The Love-In" by Bob Brady & The Con-Chords, and "You're Gonna Make Me Love You" by Sandi Sheldon. 25 tracks in all! ✨✧ Soul ExplosionSoul Fire ... CD
Granadilla (Germany), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great bit of blue-eyed soul from the German scene of the 60s – music by a group who have a sound that's like some of the best UK soul acts of the same period – definitely rooted in American modes, but also tinged with a bit of 60s mod as well! Vocals are all in English, and tunes are all originals – which really puts these guys ahead of so many of their contemporaries, who were often just covering tunes from the US! There's lots of Detroit soul influence in the arrangements, which are upbeat and swinging – and even the occasional garagey moments still have a way of coming across with a nice current of R&B. Titles include "Save Me Save Me", "See How They Run", "Only With You", "I Didn't Trip You Baby", "You Made A Man Out Of Me", "We Can't Be Friends", "That Ain't Where It's At", and "You Let Me Live". ✨✧ Kahil El ZabarTime For Healing (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Spiritmuse, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
We've always loved the music of Kahil El Zabar – and over the decades, the work of the drummer/percussionist has made us very proud to be part of the Chicago music scene! Yet recently, Kahil seems to be on fire even more than before – driven with a new sense of purpose and message that's had the musician making some of his greatest records in a long time – like this fantastic quartet session, an instant classic that has El Zabar working with some key Chicago associates in a very spiritual style! The album features key work from the great Isaiah Coller on tenor and soprano sax – a young player who's really setting things on fire, and finding a fantastic sense of direction here, alongside Corey Wilkes on trumpet and Justin Dillard on keyboards. As with Kahil, all other musicians bring a bit of percussion to play at times – on titles that include "A Time For Healing", "Urban Shaman", "Eddie Harris", "The Coming Of Spring", "We'll Get Through This", and "Time Is". Cadillac (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A quartet of improvising greats, coming together hear beautifully – with lots of sharp tenor work from Evan Parker, alongside the drums of Paul Lytton, bass of John Edwards, and piano of Alexander Hawkins! Parker is sometimes very deft, sometimes more in the textural territory of his more spacious improvisations – and at points, he's able to fold the two together beautifully – always seeming to direct the proceedings of the entire group, although it's clear that each player brings a fair bit of their own energy to bear in the proceedings. The bass of Edwards might be one of the most important elements – sometimes a bit more understated than the others, but in a way that really provides some glue for the whole thing – on titles that include "The Alchemy Of John Edwards", "A Well Staring At The Sky", "The Influence Of The Dog Star", "Art Is A Science", "A Blazing Star Or Comet Appeared", and "The Weather Set In Hot". ✨✧ Mike WestbrookLast Night At The Old Place ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic live performance by the Mike Westbrook Concert Band – recorded right around the same time as his seminal albums for Deram – and with an equally amazing sound! The "old place" here is Ronnie Scott's old club – which was still leased for a few months as the new one was being opened in 1968, which gave Westbrook and other young musicians the chance to try out some of the incredible new ideas that would really set the British jazz scene apart in the late 60s! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. Titles include "Who's Who", "A Life Of It's Own", "The Few", "Lover Man", "For Ever & A Day", "Folk Song", "We Salute You", "Flying", and "Can't Get It Out Of My Mind". CD

✨✧ Orrin Evans & The Captain Black Big BandIntangible Between ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Orrin Evans is a hell of a pianist, but he's also a hell of a bandleader too – stepping out here with his excellent Captain Black Big Band – an always-great unit that shows off a whole new dimension of Evans' mighty talents! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix. Players include Todd Bashore, Immanuel Wilkins, and Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxes; Josh Lawrence, Sean Jones, and Thomas Marriott on trumpets; David Gibson, Reggie Watkins, and Stafford Hunter on trombones; Troy Roberts on tenor; Stacy Dillard on soprano; Luques Curtis and Madison Rast on bass; Jason Brown and Mark Whitfield Jr on drums; and Evans on piano. A few tracks feature slight vocal contributions – and titles include "That Too", "A Time For Love", "Proclaim Liberty", "Tough Love", and "I'm So Glad I Got To Know You". CD

Posi tone, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've really grown to love pianist Orrin Evans in a trio setting, but he's a surprisingly strong talent at the helm of this large group too – an ensemble with a rich sound and a sense of feeling that really matches Evans' own piano! There's a boldness to the music that really brings out a whole new side of Evans – this sense of majesty that's always lurking in the way he approaches the keyboard in a smaller group, but which takes off here with work from a larger group of saxophones, trumpets, and trombones. Evans gets in many great solos – and other key moments come from Marcus Strickland on tenor or soprano sax, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Todd Bashore on alto, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet, and Ralph Peterson on drums. Titles include the originals "In My Soul", "Explain It To Me", "Dita", "Prayer For Columbine", and "Mother's Touch (parts 1 & 2)". CD

✨✧ Heitkotter (Stephen David Heitkotter)Black Orckid (aka Heitkotter – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Titles include "Hangin All Night", "I Don't Mind", "Quaker Dog Got Away", "Cadillac Woman" and "Fly Over The Moon" – plus 6 more untitled tracks/demos. Amazing! CD
