J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 23.98
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. J Dilla & OthersRebirth Of Detroit ... CD
Ruff Draft, 2012. Used ... $9.99
Dilla beats and an allstar roster of guest Detroit MCs – and a strong debut full length from Ruff Draft Records! Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Dilla didn't cop to current trends in his time on earth (except for the ones he started in the first place) so it stands to reason that the beats he had in the can before he departed would hold up strongly years later – and they do! The guests here bring their A-games, plus full respect and admiration for Dilla. Includes "The New Installment", "Detroit Madness" with Phat Kat, "Big Things" with Esham, "Let's Pray Together" with Amp Fiddler, "Requiem" with Allan Barnes of The Blackbyrds, "My Victory" with Boldy James, "Do It For Dilla Dog" with Illa J and Frank Nitt, "Jay Dee's Revenge" with Danny Brown and cuts by DJ Dez, "Houseshoes Was Spinnin'" with Quelle Chris and more. ✨✧ J DillaShining ... CD
BBE (UK), 2006. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. Tracks include in-your-f**kin' face intro "Geek Down" with Busta Rhymes, "E=MC2" feat Common, "Love Jones", "Love" feat Pharoahe Monch, "Baby" feat Madlib & Guilty Simpson, "So Far To Go" feat Common & D'Angelo (come back D', the world needs you), "Jungle Love" feat MED & Guilty Simpson, "Dime Piece (Remix)" feat Dwele, "Love Movin'" feat Black Thought and "Won't Do". Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Sanctuary/BMG, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Two songs into Grinda Date you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest blueprint era inspired productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. At the time it came out, this was De La's best album since Stakes Is High, we might actually like this one just as much. Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. Alim (UK), Early 2000s/2019. New Copy ... $11.99
2 sides of classic era Jay Dee circa Welcome 2 Detroit – including a tight Mr. Thing edit! "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" has always been a stunner in the Dilla catalog – as diverse of a beatmaker and producer as he always was, the bossa beat and jazzy piano backdrop on this one stood out then and now. Mr. Thing's edit wisely keeps it in that lively and jazzy wheelhouse while extending it just a bit. "Come Get It" with Elzhi on the mic is straightforward head nodding hip hop, though Dilla's ambitious touches are on full display in the bits of vibe and other chiming atmospherics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

BBE (UK), 2001. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 28.99
The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series. It really started out as a breakbeat project from the late Detroit legend, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with live instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. This one returns the project to more of that pre-planned breakbeat feel. A stellar set, with lyrics, or without – one that laid the groundwork for Dilla's subsequent production aesthetic! Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Y'all Ain't Ready", "Shake It Down", "Give It Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It", "Think Twice" and more. The J Dilla beats that provided the stellar backdrop for his brother Illa J's worty rhymes – and the instrumentals for the Yancey Boys album – a record that stands up very well against many of the better Dilla productions in his lifetime. It could have gone wrong in a number of ways for a number of reasons – but truth be told it's a quality record that's will worth picking up! On the vocal versions, Illa J's proved a worthy talent – rolling with a mix of singing and rhyming is really unique – and this set of bright, spacey funk beats by Dilla are naturally top notch, timeless and sound wonderful out on their own. Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The first release in the Madlib Medicine Show series of releases from the prolific genius that is Madlib – this one a full scale collaboration with no nonsense rapper Guilty Simpson – sort of a prelude to Guilty's OJ Simpson LP with Madlib in the production booth! The set is a pretty sharp confluence of Guilty's heavy-toned street knowledge and Madlib's hazy funk atmospherics – kind of a strange bedfellows situation, but it works fully well! Many tracks are billed as OJ Simpson remixes, possibly tripped out and funked up versions as a taste of what's to come – with appearances by MED & J Dilla. Titles include "Ode To The Ghetto" (OJ Simpson rmx), "Yikes" (OJ Simpson rmx), "Further", "Lucky Guy", "Pigs" (OJ Simpson rmx), "Life Goes By", "The Paper", "Looking For Trouble", "Young Guns" feat J Dilla, "American Dream & Future" (OJ Simpson rmx) and more. Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. Slum Village teams up with the hip hop-reared jazz funk collective Abstract Orchestra for this worthy revisit/live band rework of the legendary Fantastic Vol 2 – a soulful Detroit hip hop classic and a vital piece of the late great J Dilla's legacy! A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. It's also a testament to Dilla's original production that it makes so much sense fleshed out with horns, strings and more orchestral atmosphere. Titles including "Hold Tight", "Tell Me", "Jealousy", "Thelonius", "Who We Are", "Players", "What's It All About", "Forth & Back", "CB4:, "Once Upon A Time", "Untitled", "Eyes Up" and more. 21 tracks on 2CDs. A mesmerizing set of jazzy space funk from the ever-evolving Burnt Sugar collective – captured live at Banlieus Bleues in France, in March of '04! The Arkestra tag in the group's moniker couldn't be more appropriate for these cats – as the vibe indeed runs through the cestial groove of Sun Ra and electric Miles, but the crew also dips heartily into the playbook of prime Art Ensemble and the lowdown funky drive of Funkadelic. The timeless sounding underground classic debut of Frank-N-Dank – which is a strong first full length statement for the duo – and a significant milestone in the J Dilla production canon! It has more of a straight up, street ready rhyme style than was typical for Dilla productions at the time – with smoky, pulsing production and unpredictable beats. The rhymes are stronger than we gave 'em credit for a decade or so back – and the raw electro funky bounce provided by Dilla really opened us up to how diverse his style could be outside of the jazzy/funky/soul beats he'd laid down in the preceding couple of years! Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". JR BaileyJust Me & You ... LP
MAM/Be With (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... About September 18, 2020 (delayed)
A really sublime rare groover from JR Bailey – vocalist in the Cadillacs back in their doo wop years, but a heck of a great 70s mellow soul artist in this obscure little set! JR wrote and co-produced all the tunes on the set – in a mode that steps along beautifully with a subtle groove at the bottom, but takes off with complicated touches in the backings, and some vocals from Bailey that really stand out from most of his contemporaries. There's echoes here of other 70s great like Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, or Al Johnson – and like all those artists, JR's drawing a fair bit of jazz into his work – making for complicated changes and warmer overtones that really help take the record way past conventional soul. Arrangements are by Bailey with Bert De Coteaux, Ken Williams, Paull Griffin, and Horace Ott – and titles include "Love Love Love", "Cute As A Button", "After Hours", "Heaven On Earth", "She Called Me", "Everything I Want I See In You", and "Not Too Long Ago". Harry BeckettJoy Unlimited ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99
Genius work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – the kind of easygoing electric work that he seemed to do better than anyone else on the British scene of the early 70s! The record's got a laidback approach that's really unique – one that pits Beckett's trumpet against guitar by Ray Russell, keyboards from Brian Miller, and additional bass, drums, and congas – the last of which are used to underscore the sound nicely. The sound shows almost no influence from the electric trumpet jazz of Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, or Freddie Hubbard – and is instead uniquely Beckett's own bag – almost always slightly funky or grooving, but never too much so – and neither too out nor too jamming, with a lanquid quality that's totally great. Titles include "No Time For Hello", "Bracelets Of Sound", "Rings Within Rings", and "Not Just Tomorrow". CD

A split album of work from doo wop legends The Cadillacs & The Orioles – featuring about a side apiece of music by each group, pulled mostly from singles for the Jubilee label! The Cadillacs are represented here by their highly frenetic approach to vocals – a style that made them almost an east coast version of The Coasters – while the Orioles have that warmer, rounded style that made them one of the key groups in the transition from older harmony to doo wop in the 50s. Cadillacs tunes include "Let Me Down Easy", "It's Love", "C'Mon Home Baby", "Lucy", "and "Buzz Buzz Buzz". Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". Jazzmeia HornLove & Liberation ... CD
Concord, 2019. Used ... $9.99
We really loved Jazzmeia Horn on her debut, but this time around she really knocks it out of the park – to a point where we're ready to list her among our top few favorite jazz vocalists – a short list that includes Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Shirley Horn! We're not easy with praise like that – but in this case, it's very well-deserved – as the record is one of those jazz vocal sets that comes along once in a blue moon – all original material by the singer, handled with a soulful, soaring style that's made even better by the small combo on the set – a great group that features Victor Gould on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Josh Evans on trumpet, Jamison Ross on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Horn's got an ability to both deliver a straight lyric with just the right mix of soul and emotion, and take off on jazz-styled flights as well – and her sense of inflection is amazing – at once very old school, like few "jazz" singers can do these days – but also instantly personal and contemporary. Titles include "Free Your Mind", "Out The Window", "Only You", "When I Say", "Legs & Arms", "Reflections Of My Heart", and "I Thought About You". CD

A fantastic record from the contemporary Chicago scene – one that both gives bassist Junius Paul his first showcase as a leader, and underscores the richly collaborative energy in which the musician works! The set was recorded at various points in the Windy City underground – with Paul at the help of a shifting lineup that includes Makaya McCraven on drums, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Justin Dillard on piano and keyboards, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Isaiah Spencer on drums, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Tomeika Reid on cello – with most musicians also handling other instruments too, in a continuation of an AACM legacy – on a record that's then edited by Makaya McCraven, in the best International Anthem mode! The music is jazz, but of the most forward-thinking type – and titles include "Ma & Dad", "Fred Anderson & A Half", "Twelve Eighteen West", "Georgia", "Spocky Chainsey Has Re-Emerged", "The One Who Endures", "Baker's Dozen", "View From The Moon", "You Are Free To Choose", "Paris", "Collant Denier", and "Sprouts". Atlantic, 1970s. New Copy 7CD ... $49.99 54.98
A fantastic run of records – music that firmly established John Prine as one of the most inventive singer/songwriters of the 70s! Prine rose up out of the Chicago folk scene of the 60s – but he soon became something different than just a folk or country singer – even though he was admired strongly by both worlds of music. Instead, John's songs took on this new sense of wit and bite learned from folk, but delivered in a style that was maybe less preachy – but also not as rural as the vibe of country tunesmiths who were changing things up at the time. There's definitely echoes of the work of Kris Kristofferson or Shel Silverstein in Prine's words – but the execution is completely his own, and transforms wonderfully over the course of these records – at a level that shows just how much the singer was able to keep ahead of the pack, and keep his contributions relevant over the years. The box features the full albums John Prine, Diamonds In The Rough, Sweet Revenge, Common Sense, Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – in LP replica sleeves, with new notes, and poster inserts too. Madness from Andre – a side that you don't often hear on record! "Mrs Mother" is kind of a tongue in cheek dedication to mothers everywhere – done with Andre speaking over the top of a sad and bluesy strings-drenched backing! A nice one to buy for your mom in May! An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! Not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. A tremendous early recording from David Murray – recorded in London (as you'd guess by the title), but with all the best spirit of his early loft jazz sides! There's a tightness here that's missing from some of Murray's other albums of the period – a sense of soulful, spiritual swing that only seems to make the album open up even more, and which allows for some incredibly rhythmic solo work from Murray. We love this one to death, and would easily rank it as one of our favorite David Murray recordings ever – and would also say that the album's noteworthy for some great work from Butch Morris on cornet and Curtis Clark on piano – working in a quintet with Brian Smith on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. The instrumentation is wonderful – at a level that almost puts these guys in heady country/roots rock territory of groups like Dillard & Clark or Flying Burrito Brothers – but with an approach that's definitely NGDB all the way through. Titles include "Fat Boys Can Make It In Santa Monica", "Candy Man", "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", "Crazy Words Crazy Tunes", "Buy For Me The Rain", and "Rock Me Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

OutkastATLiens (2LP 180 gram picture disc) ... LP
LaFace, 1996. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $34.99
The huge creative leap forward for Outkast – and one of the greatest hip hop albums ever! The duo laid some incredible groundwork with the debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but this one is really their first (and stunningly, not their last) masterpiece. Timeless and soulful outer space grooves lace teh production and beats behind crazy good, free flowing, inventive rhymes that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL of the time. Most tracks have a laid back southern fried groove, and Dre and Big Boi's rhymes are as great as ever here. Essential! Tracks include "ATLiens", "Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac)", "Wheelz Of Steel", "Jazzy Belle", "Babylon", "Millennium", and "13th Floor/Growing Old". 14 cuts in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $14.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". Nino RotaFellini Soundtracks (Early Movies/La Strada/Notti Di Cabiria/La Dolce Vita/8 1/2) (5CD set) ... CD
DOL (Russia), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $12.99
5CDs, and a set of great soundtracks to early films by director Federico Fellini – music that forever set the standard for a new generation of film composers! First up is La Strada – the brilliant mid 50s filled that starred a young Giulettia Masini as one of the saddest clowns ever to grace the silver screen – an amazing performance supported here by key early work from Nino Rota. Rota's score is a mix of circus-like themes and darker moments – all delivered with a dynamic energy that's really wonderful – almost leaping out of the speakers at some points, then sliding into shimmering, watery depths at others. Titles include "Il Pranzo Di Nozze", "Tema Della Strada", "Gelsomina", "Il Bambino Malato", "Zampano Abbandona Gelsomina", and "Addio Del Matto". Next is Le Notti Di Cabiria – aka Nights Of Cabiria – a film of similar vintage, with an equally wonderful score by Rota! The music's a bit more lush this time around – fuller orchestrations at times, but always with that ear for an isolated melody amidst the larger body – that sense of personality that makes Rota's soundtracks so great. Titles include "Picnic Al Divino Amore", "L'Illusionista", "Il Trasloco", "Aspettando Giorgio", and "Le Notti Di Cabiria". La Dolce Vita is one of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! A delight throughout – with titles that include "La Doce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". 8 1/2 is beautiful work by Nino Rota – filled with the kind of classic themes that distinguished his best work for Fellini. Carlo Savina conducted, and he does an excellent job with Rota's ideas – crafting them into short little packets of sound, woven tightly into little balls that pass back and forth as the mood of the film changes, in a similar mode to the scoring for La Dolce Vita. Titles include "Cadillac", "Cimitero", "Discesa Ai Fanghi", "La Passerella D'Addio", "Concertino Alle Terme", and "E Poi". Last up is a special soundtrack – featuring works from very early films by Fellini – including Il Bidone, I Vitelloni, Un Agenzia Matrimoniale, Lo Sceicco Bianco, and La Grande Seduzione. CD

Ben SidranFree In America/Doctor Is In/Little Kiss In The Night/Live At Montreux ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

Soul ExplosionSoul Fire ... CD
Granadilla (Germany), 1968. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
A great bit of blue-eyed soul from the German scene of the 60s – music by a group who have a sound that's like some of the best UK soul acts of the same period – definitely rooted in American modes, but also tinged with a bit of 60s mod as well! Vocals are all in English, and tunes are all originals – which really puts these guys ahead of so many of their contemporaries, who were often just covering tunes from the US! There's lots of Detroit soul influence in the arrangements, which are upbeat and swinging – and even the occasional garagey moments still have a way of coming across with a nice current of R&B. Titles include "Save Me Save Me", "See How They Run", "Only With You", "I Didn't Trip You Baby", "You Made A Man Out Of Me", "We Can't Be Friends", "That Ain't Where It's At", and "You Let Me Live". Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $9.99
A tight bit of dancefloor funk from the duo of Frank and Eddie Dillard – one on guitar, one on bass, and both on vocals – both working here with some great clubby production from Walter Murphy! The set's got a bit more edge than Murphy's own records – thanks to the emphasis on the Dillard instrumentation – and the rhythms are often nice and sharp, in that disco style that's almost hinting at a break at points – and which might have been at home in a South Bronx mix as much as in the clubs! The set includes the single "Full Tilt Boogie" plus other tracks that include "I Like Funky Music", "Sky High", "Everybody's Got One, "We Came To Play", and "Bad Motor Folk". CD

Mike WestbrookLast Night At The Old Place ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really fantastic live performance by the Mike Westbrook Concert Band – recorded right around the same time as his seminal albums for Deram – and with an equally amazing sound! The "old place" here is Ronnie Scott's old club – which was still leased for a few months as the new one was being opened in 1968, which gave Westbrook and other young musicians the chance to try out some of the incredible new ideas that would really set the British jazz scene apart in the late 60s! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. Titles include "Who's Who", "A Life Of It's Own", "The Few", "Lover Man", "For Ever & A Day", "Folk Song", "We Salute You", "Flying", and "Can't Get It Out Of My Mind". CD

Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $11.99
We have never been sure if this comp was to be derided for not including some more interesting punk bands from the lower east side, or if all the really great ones already had contracts with other labels anyway. Besides, now that the venerable punk landmark is long gone, this early document provides an interesting perspective on a remarkable time. The music here runs the gamut from seminal new wave, to pretty dumb bar rock, but there's more than a few nuggets of great 70s guitar swagger too. 8 groups in all, with 16 tracks, including "Head Over Heels", "Slash" and "All For The Love Of Rock And Roll" by the Tuff Darts, "Operetico", "AVM" and "Poe" by the Shirts, "Cadillac Moon", "Change It Comes" and "Let Me Dream If I Want To" by Mink Deville, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" and "I'm Rellay Not this Way" by Manster, "We Deliver" by the Miamis, "I Need A Million" and "It Feels Alright Tonight" by the Laughing Dogs, "Romance" by Sun, and "Everybody's Depraved" by Stuart's Hammer. The work was recorded in London at the end of the 50s, and features a very young Fela doing a jazzy take on highlife styles – playing lead trumpet and doing vocals in a more traditional mode – with backing from a small combo that features guitar, piano, tenor, bass, and percussion – all nice and jazzy, especially the tenor – with a very hip London blend of modern modes and Nigerian roots. The whole thing's got a great postcolonial vibe – the changing sound of London in the postwar years – and titles include "Highlife Rakers Calypso No 1", "Wa Ba Mi Jo Bosue", "Aicana", and "Fela's Special". Laidback beats with plenty of boom – just the right sort of mellow setting to allow the rhymes to flow in the best way possible – core lyrics from Emcee Sick, with contributions from Cudtry Cadillac, Dheema, and Jon Blazini! There's a nicely jazzy current – almost in an early 90s Tribe Called Quest style, but more individual, as the best instrumental touches are live, and less tied to the historical references that samples might provide. A weird sort of title – until you realize it's a play on the name of the city of Manchester, where most of this work originates – and where the testosterone must have been running high during the 70s, when most of these tunes were cut! The music here represents a world hardly heard from before – a British underground in the years after Deep Purple – rich in fuzz, and heavy on drums – making music that easily rivals the badass power of most of the bigger British groups of the time – and which often has an undercurrent of funk at the bottom too! That funky element is definitely at play on the track selection here, too – as you might expect with Finders Keepers at the helm – the folks who've given us fuzzy funky nuggets from around the globe, and have turned back towards home to dig up these mostly unreleased gems! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix.
