Black Ivory were just kids when they recorded this session – but they had a sophistication that pushed them way past any of their contemporaries on the east coast scene. The band are very lucky to have the talents of the great Patrick Adams – originally singer himself, but who wisely made a move to producer once he'd heard the rich talents of the young group. Adams perfectly handles the sweet voices of the group, building up their raw emotions into a dreamy web of harmony vocals to rival the best work of The Stylistics, The Delfonics, and other older groups. An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! The African artists contribute a lot of vocals and work on kora that's especially beautiful – and the other players are led by Gregg Middleton on bass, who also does all the arrangements – and the combo features Ernie Fields on saxes, Nolan Smith on trumpet, and Fred Wesley on trombone! Jimmy Hyacinthe is posed on the cover like some 70s bluesman, but his music here is much more global overall – plenty of grooves that echo his origins in the Ivory Coast, but handled with qualities that are electric and a bit funky too! The rhythms almost feel Caribbean at times, especially on the uptempo cuts and the way they let the guitars, basslines, and horn parts intertwine – yet the record's also got some laidback moments that almost feel like they carry a bit of influence from southern soul! There's a number of tracks on here that have a period setting, in keeping with the locale of the TV show – but there's others that are really wonderful orchestral numbers, shaded with the darker tones of jazz, almost in a Kentonian mode, with a range of expression that's almost surprising from Riddle. Side one features a number of shorter Nugent-penned tunes, and side two is a slightly more complicated offering – a bit of a concept piece, with tracks that form a story over the side of the record. With players like these, the life of a trio must be a great one – and the album's one part of a two-day recording session done by pianist Paul Bley, bassist Steve Swallow, and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre! The "trio" tag is somewhat misleading at times – because the album's often a gathering of all three players in the studio, rather than a continuous collaborative effort. Some tracks have a single player, working alone – while others sneak in a duet, and others then follow a trio format – and the album's a great illustration of the sharp talents that all players still had at this point in their career! Giuffre's especially great – and works here on both clarinet and soprano sax – and given that Swallow had been a key part of Jim's trio in years back, many moments often sound like a revival of the more "out" Giuffre trio sides, with the addition of Bley's great tones on piano. This first volume features the "Saturday" recordings – with 12 titles that include "Endless Melody", "Foreplay", "Black Ivory", "Owl Eyes", "Clarinet Zone", and "By The Way". CD

One of the more obscure reissues to come out on the great Rearward imprint – but an excellent lost session of piano jazz, recorded in Milan in 1969! Pianist Oscar Rocchi has a sweet soulful approach to the piano, with a tone that's almost slightly funky at times – partly in reflection to the strong bass work by Cornelio Dattoli, and tight drumming by Gianni Cazzola. The record almost reminds us of some of the excellent 70s Japanese trio recordings by American pianists – and the whole set has a nice warm quality that you wouldn't expect from a record titled Abstraction! Includes a version of Edu Lobo's "Cancao Do Amanhecer", plus "FBM Blues", "Moment Of Joy", "Ivory Isle", and "Remember Coltrane". CD

A surprisingly great album by Bobby Hutcherson – and like his other albums for Columbia, a record that manages to be smooth, yet still has an edge! The format's bigger and more ambitious than previous years, but it's also an extension of the modal soulful style he forged with Harold Land – a really stretched out approach to the vibes that differs nicely from his 60s work, and which has some really soulful touches throughout. The group features George Cables on electric and acoustic piano, John Abercrombie on guitar, and Peter Erskine on percussion – but the real strength of the set is Bobby, who slides between vibes and marimba with a skittish energy that really cracks a lot of life into the set. An incredible early album from the LA scene – very different than the hardcore and the new wave that was dominating the city at the time – and done in a style that's much more UK post-punk overall – almost with a feel that's like some of the best early releases on Factory Records! The album was reportedly recorded in a parking garage, and definitely has a dark sound to match – a moody blend of tribal percussion, brooding bass, edgey guitar, and these raw, stark lyrics that really get to the point right away! The set was the first in the longer legacy of Independent Project, and is maybe still the best – with titles that include "Attempted Coup Madagascar", "The Ivory Coast", "Next To Nothing", "Zulu Zulu", "Real Men", and "When All Else Fails". Great reissue pressing – with a full disc of material that represents the early recordings by the group before the label – 11 more tracks, recorded in various parking garages at UCLA! The package also features very detailed notes – finally getting past the mystery of the original release. CD
