Ivan LinsAcariocando ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $14.99
Always-great work from Ivan Lins – one of the few Brazilian artists who never falters as the years go on! If anything, Lins has grown into a maturity that fits his songs almost even better than back in the 70s – a sense of wisdom and presence that really serves his lyrical talents wonderfully, and which is carried off here with some lightly jazzy backgrounds. There's nothing revolutionary about the record, but it's got a solidity that's really great – a simple but effective approach to the songs that's always been Lins' strongest calling card in Brazilian popular music, and which seems to have even more focus in recent years. Guests include Chico Buarque, Dona Ivone Lara, Lenine, Moska, Boca Livre, and Guinga – and titles include "Se Acontecer", "A Gente Merece Ser Feliz", "Diana No Mar", "Lua Sagrada", "Antidotos", "Lar Doce Lar", "Deus E Mais", "Passarela No Ar", and "Ela E A Propria Vida". Ivan LinsAmerica Brasil Vol 1 ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. Used ... $9.99 12.99
One of the strongest, most positive albums that Ivan Lins has recorded in years – a set that almost has the feel of some of his biggest albums from the 80s, a time when Lins was riding high on a big wave of international acclaim! The production is a bit more top-shelf than other recent efforts, but that's a great thing – as it really helps to bring out the strengths in Lins' songwriting – which hasn't dimmed at all over the years. There's plenty of catchy tunes on the set – the kind of classic work from Lins that you can totally dig, even without knowing the language – and titles include "Cantor Da Noite", "Cantoria", "Luxo Do Lixo", "America Brasil", "Agua Doce", and "Do Oiapoque Ao Chui". Ivan LinsCantando Historias ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2004. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest albums we've heard in years from Ivan Lins – a wonderful live recording that's done with a really personal and honest quality that returns Lins to the glory of his 70s years! The instrumentation alone is a key factor of the set's greatness – as the tunes feature small combo backing that's as warm and spontaneous as Lins' delivery of the tunes. But it's the vocals themselves that really make the set – mellowed a bit with age, but still with an undeniable sense of personality that captures the imagination from the very first word – coming across with incredible power, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Guests on the set include Simone and Zizi Possi – and titles include "Bilhete", "Abre Alas", "Guarde Nos Olhos", "Porta Entreaberta", "Vitoriosa", "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai", and "Comecar De Novo". CD

Ivan LinsChama Acesa ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1975. Used ... $11.99 14.99
A great album from one of Ivan Lins' best periods – a great shift in his music, with a sound that's made the album one of his all-time classics! The set has him adapting more of a jazzy sound than on earlier records – dropping some of the baroque arrangements for a sound that's leaner, meaner, and stripped down in a way that really gets the spirit of his great compositions across to the listener. The small backing combo features Gilson Peranzzetta, who plays some excellent electric piano, which gives the album a moody groove that places it somewhere between the early 70s work of Joao Donato and Milton Nascimento. Titles include "Lenda Do Carmo", "Sorriso Da Magoa", "Palhacos E Reis", "Corpos", "Demonio De Guarda", and "Nao Ha Porque". CD

Ivan Lins is working here with a help from a host of international artists – no surprise, considering the influence he's had on music around the world over the past few decades! At its core, the set's got the spirit of all of Lins' best recent work, with that warmer, jazzier vibe he's picked up lately – and some key cuts further bring out this aspect with instrumental solos from players who include Till Bronner on trumpet, Antonio Serrano on harmonica, Leonardo Amuedo on guitar, and Frits Landesbergen on vibes! There's also a bit of guest vocals on just a few tracks – from Take 6, Jane Monheit, Trintje Oosterhuis, and Abaqondisi Brothers – and titles include "Sou Eu", "Tanto Amor", "Meu Espelho/Crystal Clear", "Tchau Tristeza", "Maos De Fada", "No Tomorrow/Acaso", and "Dandara". Ivan LinsIvan Lins, Agora (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Forma/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
A brilliant early album by Ivan Lins – much more experimental than his earlier work, handled with a unique style that mixed together some of the baroque pop of artists like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo, touches of the trippy Tropicalia era, and a masterful sense of lyrical presentation that almost seems lifted from the great European singers of the 60s. The album's filled with beautiful original compositions by Lins – including the cuts "Hey Voce", "Minha Historia", "Novamente Nos", and "O Amor e O Meu Pais" – and if you were ever looking for an album to convince you how great Lins is, this might well be the one! Other tracks include "Emy", "Salve Salve", "Baby Blue", and "Tanaue" – and the CD features 2 bonus tracks, "A Vida Avisa Que Chegou", and "Amiga", which is a duet with Claudette Soares. CD

Very cool 3 CD set that brings together some of Ivan Lins best material from the 70s, in a format that reproduces all the original album covers and notes in tiny 5 inch CD size! The material's fantastic and so is Lins' voice. The songs represent some of the greatest songwriting in Brazil, and are a key link in a tradition of material that spans from Jacques Brel to Scott Walker to some of the other great European singer songwriters. Tracks include "Um Fado", "Choro Das Aquas", "Noites Sertanejas", "Vira", "A Noite", "Bilhete", "Aparecida", "Dinorah, Dinorah", and lots lots more! Ivan LinsQuem Sou Eu? ... CD
Philips (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $19.99 24.99
One of Ivan Lins' first albums – and a landmark set of MPB! The record shows a lot of strands of influence from the Milton Nascimento, Lo Borges, and Minhas Geraes camp – and it shares much of the same sense of jazzy scoring with the work of those artists. But most important is Lins' ability to write a song – a talent that was present strongly even at this early stage, and which added an incredible amount of sophistication to Brazilian popular music. His voice is fantastic, too – with a raspy edge that gives it a great deal of honesty, and which makes you really feel the lyrics, even if you don't understand his language. Titles include "Voce Amiga", "SQDQ", "Quarto Escuro", "Ratos Baratos e Cupins", "Pra Voce Ver", and "Sai De Baixo". CD includes 3 bonus tracks – "Tomara", "Quero De Volta O Meu Pandeiro", and "Oito Pecados Capitais". CD

Discobertas (Brazil), 2016. Used ... $9.99
One of the best albums we've ever heard from this legendary Brazilian singer – at least within the past decade or so – a fantastic reunion with pianist/arranger Geraldo Flach, who gives the music a jazzy flow that's totally wonderful! Both Ivan Lins and Geraldo play piano and keyboards – so most tracks have a keys-heavy sound that's great, with mostly acoustic underpinning the music – creating waves of sound, even on the mellow cuts, which seem to unlock the jazziest side of the singer's vocals! The whole thing almost feels more like some lost live date from the 70s than a 21st Century performance – and is a reminder of that special sophistication that some of the true geniuses in Brazilian music can give us. Titles include 'Novo Tempo", "Ultimo Desejo", "O Mapa Da Cidade", "As Pastorinhas", "O Voo Da Aguia", "Estrela Guia", and "Lembra De Mim". CD

Sublime work from Ivan Lins – exactly the kind of record to get you started with his music, as it's one of the best that he ever recorded! The set's got all the best elements of Lins at his 70s stretch of greatness – wonderful songwriting, honest presentation of the lyrics, and this sublime mix of jazz and more lofty backings – at a level that places him in the space with Milton Nascimento or Lo Borges! Like both of those artists, the music here is earnest, but never overdone – balanced with a sense that no American artist could ever hope to touch – with this universal appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of language. Gilson Peranzzetta handled the backings, and plays keyboards on the set – and titles include "Quadras de Roda", "Dinorah, Dinorah", "Choro Das Aquas", and the great "Aparecida". ✨✧ Ivan LinsDeixa O Trem Seguir (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Forma/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early work by Ivan Lins! The record is totally unlike his later work – and is a stunning mix of baroque pop arrangements and Brazilian rhythms, with a god-like sense of pop presentation that places Lins right up there with Euro greats like Scott Walker or Jacques Brel. Issued in the wake of the Tropicalia era, the record's almost a return to more exploration of baroque ideals within Brazilian songwriting, without sacrificing the sense of playful exploration that had come to the music in recent years. Lins voice is incredible, with slight hints of jazz that will creep up more strongly in his later work – and a strong way of phrasing that goes past the overdramatic style of earlier Brazilian singers, with a confidence and maturity that are immediately infectious. Titles include "Que Pena Que Eu Tenho De Voce", "Deixa O Trem Seguir", "Catedral", "Oba", "Oratorio No Mar Branco", and "Me Deixa Em Paz". CD also includes 2 bonus cuts – "Bia Bia Beatriz" and "Voce Mulher Voce", recorded with Trio Mocoto. CD

The set's recorded with a warmly lyrical feel – core backing by a small combo with Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, amidst fuller strings arranged by Rob Mathes – never too lush, and always with the gentle, spacious sound that you might find in some mid 60s bossa nova album on Elenco! Eliane's vocals really fit the setting nicely – with only a few contemporary touches to give her away – and the album also features guests appearances from Toots Thielemans on harmonica and Ivan Lins on vocals. Titles include "The Girl From Ipanema", "The More I See You", "Desafinado", "Estate", "Day In Day Out", "I'm Not Alone", "Chega De Saudade", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "A Ra", and "Superwoman". Maybe one of the best-remembered albums from the legendary 70s run of Joao Bosco – a set that manages to bring together jazzy instrumentation, samba rhythms, folksy elements, and a whole new level of songwriting – all in a blend that beautifully announces Bosco's genius to the world! There's a level of expression here that rivals Caetano Veloso or Ivan Lins – and like those giants of Brazilian music, the sound here is almost Bosco's genre unto itself – a wonderfully strong expression of new ideas, done in close collaboration with songwriter Aldir Blanc. Cesar Camargo Mariano handles arrangements and keyboards – which makes for more than a few jazzy and groovy moments – especially on the cuts "Nessa Data" and "Casa De Marimbondo", plus the classic "Kid Cavaquinho". Other titles include "O Mestre Sala Dos Mares", "Escadas Da Penha", "Jardins Da Infancia", and "Violeta De Belfort Roxo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear and aging, small sticker spot, and is lightly bent at the sides.)

✨✧ Ann SallyVoyage ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great set by Korean jazz singer Ann Sally – recorded with a gentle mellow finish, and some sweet Brazilian touches! Ann sings in both Portuguese and English – running through a host of tracks that includes classics by Ivan Lins, Marcos Valle, Joni Mitchell, Henry Mancini, and Roberto Menescal – all done in a way that's both gentle and breezy at the same time, and which makes the record sound like the kind of 70s female jazz classic that Japanese groovehounds have been going nuts over for years now! Titles include "Velas", "He Loves You", "O Barquinho", "All I Want", "Midnight At The Oasis", "Smile", "The Face I Love", and "Both Sides Now". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing – with obi!)

✨✧ Trio EsperancaA Capela Do Brasil ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first French album recorded by this legendary Brazilian trio – but one that also features plenty of guests from their homeland – including Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco, and Milton Nascimento! The group sing in a mode that's every bit as acapella as promised by the title – no other instrumentation, and instead this heavenly combination of their own voices – in ways that sound even more amazing when the guests come into play! Titles include "Aquele Um", "Qualquer Coisa", "O Pato", "Toada", "O Que Sera", "Expresso 2222", "Deixa Isso Pra La", "San Vincente", and "Conversa De Botequim". CD
