Isley Brothers3 + 3 ... CD
T Neck, 1973. Used ... $4.99
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady". CD

T Neck/Columbia, 1977. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. Other tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". CD

T Neck, 1981. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Great work from The Isley Brothers – proof that they were still growing strongly as a group into the 80s! The Isleys are smoothing it out nicely here – going for that lean, compressed style that they used on more than a few nice records at the time. Tracks have a tight modern soul approach – vocals, guitars, and keyboards all fused into one sweet snakey line that sounds better and better with each listen! Titles include "I Once Had Your Love", "Hurry Up And Wait", "Tonight Is The Night", "Young Girls", and "Who Said". LP, Vinyl record album

T Neck, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". Funky dancefloor material from the Isleys – pretty guitar-heavy, and not really their best moment, as the soul quotient's a bit low, and they're kind of lost in the grooves. "I Wanna Be" is served up in a disco version, which is really just an extended funker. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Isley BrothersIsleys Live ... LP
T Neck, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
One of the hippest 70s albums by the Isley Brothers – a set that has them playing live with a stripped-down group, in a manner that's similar to other live albums of the time by Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and Bill Withers. The format is great, and really gets to the core of the Isley's unique soul style – a blend of funk, soul, and rock that comes off perfect on tracks that include "Work to Do", "Pop That Thang", "It's Your Thing", "It's Too Late", "Love the One You're With", "Machine Gun", "Ohio", and "Lay Lady Lay". Very lively, and with a good raw feel! LP, Vinyl record album

Isley BrothersLet's Go! ... LP
Stateside (UK), Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Early early work by The Isley Brothers – recorded for United Artists in the early and mid 60s, in the years between their hit work for RCA and Motown. The material here leans heavily on the "Twist & Shout" sound of the RCA years – taking elements of R&B group styles, and forging them into a tighter 60s soul approach – one that got a bit more sophisticated as the years went on, but which was still very much in the party soul mode in which the boys first made their mark. There's a total of 16 tracks in all – nicely packaged with good notes – and titles include "What'cha Gonna Do", "Surf & Shout", "Please Please Please", "She's The One", "Shake It With Me Baby", "Who's That Lady", "My Little Girl", "Love Is A Wonderful Thing", "Open Up Her Eyes", and "She's Gone". The Isley Brothers in prime 70s mode here – hitting a warm and wonderful blend of soul and funk throughout – always delivered with that sweet talent for smooth understatement that makes them so great! The costumes on the front cover may be freaky, but the grooves are nicely restrained – and by this point in the decade, the brothers have definitely learned that their strongest suit is often their mellow one – tracks that groove, but often in more subtle ways! Titles include the massive slow jam track "Groove With You", plus "Take Me To The Next Phase (parts 1 & 2)", "Love Fever (parts 1 & 2)", "Fun & Games", "Ain't Givin Up No Love", and "Coolin Me Out (parts 1 & 2)". T Neck/Epic, 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. A very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiralling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits! The sound's a bit like Terry Callier or Bill Withers, but it's also still got that sexy Isley groove to it – and although the cuts aren't all out funky, there's definitely a lot of funk in the way that they're set up! We love the complexity of the Isleys at this point – really willing to take a chance like this, with results that come out beautifully. Titles include a great version of "Love The One You're With", plus "Machine Gun", "Ohio", "Spill The Wine", and "Lay Lady Lay". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the few LPs that the Isleys recorded during their short stay at Motown, and a nice batch of mid-60s soul tracks that makes good use of the boys' fantastic voices. The groove's a mix of the harder R&B of earlier years, and some of the smoother sounds of Motown – and the record, while not the group's most important work, does feature some nice little gems that don't always show up in accounts of their music. AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! The record's got plenty of sweet electric keyboards over smooth funky basslines – and as the years go by, the band's white boy vocals don't sound nearly as bad as we remember them. And besides, when they play their instruments so nicely – how can you hold the singing against them? Includes the killer classic "Pick Up The Pieces", sampled more times than we can remember – plus "You Got It", "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Person To Person", and a nice remake of the Isley Brothers' "Work To Do". Jill Scott & OthersCollaborations ... CD
Hidden Beach, 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
Jill Scott's a singer with a mighty generous spirit – and in addition to her own (all too few) recordings over the years, she's made some tremendous appearances on records under the leadership of other artists – a good deal of which are included in this set! Jill's not the kind of singer to just sleepwalk into the studio and deliver a few standard vocals when making a guest shot – and instead, she brings a new sense of life and energy to each different appearance in the set – coming across with a street-heavy vibe one minute, a more laidback cosmic mode the next, and a more classically-tuned soul sound at still another point. The set's a great illustration of the depths of Scott's rich talents – and even though we'd rather have Jill spending more time in the studio recording her own music, we're still plenty happy to have so many of her great guest appearances together in one package like this! CD features 14 tracks in all – including "Love Rain" with Mos Def, presented in "head nod" and "coffee shop" remixes – plus "Said Enough" with The Isley Brothers, "One Time" with Eric Roberson, "Good Morning Heartache" with Chris Botti, "Daydreamin" with Lupe Fiasco, "Let Me" with Sergio Mendes & Will I Am, "8 Minutes To Sunrise" with Common, "Sometime I Wonder" with Darius Rucker, "Slide" with Jeff Bradshaw, "The Rain" with Will Smith, and "God Bless The Child" with Al Jarreau & George Benson. Boardwalk, 1982. Sealed ... $14.99
The one and only album from Sunrize – a cool little group who get some heavy help on production and arrangements from the Isley Brothers and Chris Jasper! The groove here is a nice extension of the Isley vibe of the time – a bit more bassy at points, clearly going for the ensemble funk style of the time – but also a bit smoother and mellow at different points too, with that gentle glide we love so much in later Isleys material. Our favorite cuts are actually these more laidback numbers – which still seem to manage a nicely slinky groove, even when slow – and titles include "Come & Get My Lovin", "Who's Stickin It?", "I Need You More Than Words Can Say", "Someone's Taken My Hand", and "You Are The One". A wickedly wonderful solo set from Chris Jasper – cut in a mode that's right up there with the best 80s material he did with the Isley Brothers! Jasper's voice sounds surprisingly great in the lead – maybe not as powerful as that of Ernie Isley, but with a sense of individuality that really makes the album stand out – and that great mix of righteousness and warmth that made his previous collaborations such classics. There's a bit more of a focus on the groove at times – never overdone, just maybe more keyboard lines alongside the lyrics – as you'd guess from Chris' role in the previous group. All tunes are Jasper originals, and titles include "Superbad", "One Time Love", "Like I Do", "Earthquake", "The Son Of Man", "Dance For The Dollar", and "My Soul Train". Although the Main Ingredient were best known for their early 70's singles, this album from '74 is a wonderfully complex batch of tunes that shows that the group were taking a cue from some of their hipper contemporaries, and pushing past a stock hit formula. Bert DeCoteaux was still arranging, but the group produced themselves, giving the record a sexy funky feeling in the best parts, not that dissimilar from some of Marvin Gaye's work, or records by groups like The Isley Brothers or The O'Jays. Includes great versions of two Seals & Crofts songs – "Summer Breeze" and "Euphrates" – both a perfect example of this style, as is "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" – plus a great reading of Willie Hutch's "California My Way", which has a super-dope sample at the beginning. Of course, the album still includes material like their hit " "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", a sweetly style AM radio pop hit in the band's best style of earlier years. LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol/FTG, 1986. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last in Beau Williams' great run of albums for Capitol Records in the mid 80s – and a sweet little set that equally balances quiet storm ballads with more uptempo groovers! Williams is one of the great unsung male vocal acts of his generation – and he's got a great way here of putting over a mellow track with a level of care and sensitivity that weren't always that common in mainstream soul at the time – a approach that reminds us more of Marvin Gaye or The Isley Brothers in years before, than you might guess from the date of the album. Production is by William Reinhart, McFadden & Whitehead, Williams, and others – and titles include "I Found A Love", "All Because Of You", "There's Something About You", "Give Me Up", "Don't Be Gone To Say", "No More Tears", and "Been Too Long". CD also features a bonus instrumental version of "Give Me Up". CD

Trojan (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard-wailing classics from a key year in the Trojan Records catalog – 1969, a time when the British company was really building a bridge to bring the music of Jamaica over to the London scene – where it would have an undeniable impact for years to come! ✨✧ Marlon SaundersEnter My Mind ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning debut from singer Marlon Saunders – a fantastic male vocalist who's gonna be huge! Marlon's got a smooth and seductive vocal approach that really takes us back to mellow 70s Isley Brothers, later ballad tracks from the O'Jays, and even a bit of the best work from Marvin Gaye – classic-styled vocals that have a universal soul appeal, sung with a confidence and depth of expression that's rare for male singers in the current age! Marlon's known for his earlier work with the group Jazzhole, but on this set, he moves way ahead of that group – emerging as a bright new soul star to rival the work of D'Angelo or Maxwell! Titles include "Inspiration", "You Move Me", "Enter My Mind", "Keep Doin What Ya Do", "Stone Out Of Hope", and "If It's Magic". CD

✨✧ MaxwellMaxwell's Urban Hang Suite ... LP
Columbia, 1996. Very Good 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An excellent bit of modern soul – a smooth seductive album that fits perfectly with an older mellow groove, but which also sparkles with the best recent efforts of the past decade. Maxwell's got a wonderful vocal style – reminding us a bit of classic Isley Brothers, Leon Ware, or O'Jays in a ballad mode – and it sits perfectly amidst warm jazzy arrangements by Musze, filled with all the subtle instrumental touches (keyboards, sax, and guitar) you'd find on a late album by Marvin Gaye, or some of the slow jams by the Isleys. The vibe is warm and acoustic, and the record's a wonderful return to a classic mellow midtempo soul style – and did quite well upon its initial release. Also interesting was the fact that the record was pressed up heavily on vinyl – something that was rare for a mainstream soul album at the time, and which was particularly ubiquitous in our hometown of Chicago, where DJs on the steppers scene were snatching up the record like hotcakes! Includes the titles "Ascension", "Whenever Wherever Whatever", "Lonely's The Only Company (parts 1 & 2)", "Reunion", and "Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)" – but the whole thing's great! LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has unglued seams, small center split in the top seam, and a promo sticker.)
