Isley Brothers3 + 3 (plus bonus track) ... CD
T Neck/Legacy, 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady". CD

Isley BrothersBeautiful Ballads ... CD
T Neck/Epic, 1970s. Used ... $3.99
Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. Isley BrothersBrothers Isley ... CD
T Neck/Epic, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A stone cold funk album that forever changed the face of soul music – a bold shift in styles by the Isley Brothers at the end of the 60s, really setting the scene for their megafame of the next decade! The album's a follow up to the landmark It's Your Thing set – and it starts in the same space as that one, but goes arguably even deeper and harder in its groove – hitting a raw, sharp-edged approach to funk that's totally sinister – easily as great as anything coming out of the funky 45 underground, and a really strong message to the mainstream that these older hitmakers were ripe and ready for a deeper funk mode. The record doesn't have any of the hits of its predecessor – making it an even bigger treasure trove of under-discovered gems – great little tunes that are heavy on the drums, filled with rumbling bass, and cut with plenty of sharp-edged guitar. Titles include "Black Berries", "Vacuum Cleaner", "I Turned You On", "Was It Good To You", "Get Down Off The Train", "Feel Like The World", "Holding On", and "My Little Girl". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersGet Into Something ... CD
Epic/T Neck, 1970. Used ... $12.99
An excellent album by the Isley Brothers – easily their rarest, and probably their funkiest! The record's pushing the T-Neck funk sound to the limit, adding in some heavy horns to the tracks, and really egging on the vocals of the group with some totally hard-hitting arrangements by George Patterson. The whole thing's got a really sinister feel – with horns replacing the guitars on some of the group's other albums, carving out these dark little lines that lead their vocals over the top of funky choppy rhythms that will blow your mind! Includes the excellent cut "Get Into Something", which sounds like a direct ripoff of "The Grunt", by the JBs (or is it the other way around?). Other good ones include "I Got To Find Me One", "Take Inventory", "Girls Will Be Girls", and more! CD

A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. Other tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersHeat Is On (expanded edition) ... CD
T Neck/Epic, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". CD also features a bonus track – a live version of "Fight The Power", recorded "live" in the studio, and never released before! CD

Isley BrothersInside You/Real Deal ... CD
T Neck/BGO (UK), 1981/1982. New Copy ... $8.99
Two early 80s groovers from the Isleys – on one great CD! Inside You is a strong extension of the group's funky 70s style – moving into a more compressed mode that had been taking hold of the group's style over the past few albums, giving them a smoother finish, but one that actually brought out some even more soulful feelings from their overall work. As always, we dig the mellow cuts best – especially the two part "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and the stepper "Welcome Into My Heart". Other tracks include "First Love", "Baby Hold On", and "Love Zone" and "Inside You". The Real Deal is authentic 80s grooving from the Isleys – mostly an album of upbeat, electro-grooving numbers that change up the style a bit more from their 70s funk work. But as usual for this period, they actually sound best on the ballads – clocking in with the sweet slow tune "All In My Lovers Eyes", and sounding even nicer on the anthemic "I'll Do It All For You" – a great little track with a bubbling, steppish groove. Other tracks include "The Real Deal", "Stone Cold Lover", "Are You With Me", and "Under The Influence". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersIsleys Live (with bonus tracks) ... CD
T Neck, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest 70s albums by the Isley Brothers – a set that has them playing live with a stripped-down group, in a manner that's similar to other live albums of the time by Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and Bill Withers. The format is great, and really gets to the core of the Isley's unique soul style – a blend of funk, soul, and rock that comes off perfect on tracks that include "Work to Do", "Pop That Thang", "It's Your Thing", "It's Too Late", "Love the One You're With", "Machine Gun", "Ohio", and "Lay Lady Lay". Very lively, and with a good raw feel! CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersIt's Our Thing ... LP
T Neck, 1969. Very Good ... $9.99
A stone classic from the Isleys – the album that kicked off their successful T-Neck label, and established that mighty Isleys sound that would have such a huge influence in the 70s! The title cut of the set – "It's Your Thing" – is a well-known classic that really sets the tone for the rest of the record – mixing guitar and chunky rhythms into a righteous funky style of soul that was miles away from the Brothers' earlier work on Motown and RCA. And believe it or not, the rest of the record's even better than the title cut – filled with sinister, sexy numbers that bristle with energy that's still heard best here at the point of its creation! Other gems include "Give the Women What They Want", "He's Got Your Love", "I Know Who You Been Socking It To", "Don't Give It Away", "He's Got Your Love", "Save Me", "Feel Like The World", and "Somebody Been Messin". Ultra heavy stuff! LP, Vinyl record album

Isley BrothersWinner Takes All ... CD
T Neck/Columbia, 1979. Used ... $5.99
A key album in the Isley Brothers "extended funk" mode of the 70s – a style in which the group approached nearly every tune by adding in a "part 2" in order to stretch out the groove! The style here is bass-heavy funk, but less of the sort that other groups were using at the time – because the Isleys still bring in plenty of soul to the mix, and resist popping the bass too much so that they still have plenty of space for the slinky vocals that always make their work so great. Most of the titles on the album have this extended approach, and titles include "I Wanna Be With You (parts 1 & 2)", "Liquid Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Winner Takes All", "Love Comes & Goes (parts 1 & 2)", "Let's Fall In Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Let Me In Your Life (parts 1 & 2)", "Life In The City (parts 1 & 2)", "Go For What You Know", and "Mind Over Matter (parts 1 & 2)". An amazing record! This one's probably our favorite Isley Brothers album of all time – and it's a perfect blend of all the styles they were into at the time – heavy funk, sweet soul, folksy rock, and rolling uptempo grooves! The Brothers handle all styles equally well, and the album's a real delight as it skips effortlessly from track to track – always bringing a fresh sound to the experience of listening, and continuing to delight us year after year with the Isley's greatness! Includes the classic extended cut "Love Put Me On the Corner", a baroque soul symphony in itself; an amazing remake of "It's Too Late" that's way different than the original; the middle-class anthem "Work To Do"; and the funky cuts "Pop That Thang" and "Layaway". A massive amount of work from the Isley Brothers – 5 classic albums, packaged in individual sleeves inside a sweet little slipcover! First up is Brothers Isley – a stone cold funk album that forever changed the face of soul music – a bold shift in styles by the Isley Brothers at the end of the 60s, really setting the scene for their megafame of the next decade! Next is Get Into Something – a record that's pushing the T-Neck funk sound to the limit, adding in some heavy horns to the tracks, and really egging on the vocals of the group with some totally hard-hitting arrangements by George Patterson. The whole thing's got a really sinister feel – with horns replacing the guitars on some of the group's other albums, carving out these dark little lines that lead their vocals over the top of funky choppy rhythms that will blow your mind! Givin It Back is a very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiralling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits. The sound's a bit like Terry Callier, but it's also still got that sexy Isley groove to it! Brother Brother Brother is probably our favorite Isley Brothers album of all time – and it's a perfect blend of all the styles they were into at the time – heavy funk, sweet soul, folksy rock, and rolling uptempo grooves! 3 + 3 is an amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! A hard title to carry for most groups, but just about any release by the Isley Brothers is a masterpiece in our book! Even at this mid 80s point, the Brothers sound great – sliding along in some warm mellow tracks that make the album really worth owning – the kind of laidback soul tunes they first started crafting so well in the previous decade, and which continue to sparkle here – even amidst some more programmed rhythms. The group do a surprisingly wonderful job on a Phil Collins tune – "If Leaving Me Was Easy" – sliding along in really spare space that's just like the old days – and other cuts include the smooth stepper "Colder Are My Nights", plus "Release Your Love", "The Most Beautiful Girl", "Come To Me", "You Never Know When You're Gonna Fall In Love", and "May I". Peven EverettSincerely Yours ... CD
Studio Confession, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
One of the most sweetly soulful sets we've ever heard from Peven Everett – a laidback session that's a nice change from some of his more upbeat grooves – and one that places him solidly in the territory of mid 70s Isley Brothers or Marvin Gaye! Tunes are simple, but have a real sense of warmth – thanks to Peven's mellow vocals and keyboard work, and occasional jazzy touches that shade things in with a nice sense of color. There's beats at the bottom of most tunes, but they never move too fast – more in a mellow or midtempo mode that's totally great – and a whole new side of Peven's mighty talents. Ace (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great look at the tremendous talents of Bert Berns – the solid soul producer who had an undeniable influence on the New York scene of the 60s! The set's one of the best so far in Ace Records' "producer" series – and like the others, it features work by a variety of different artists, originally issued on a variety of different labels – all of which features a key contribution from Berns! Bert produced many tracks here, and he also wrote a fair bit of the tunes too – showing a great ear for the sort of immediate classics that were flowing out of the New York scene like magic during the time. And while most of the work here is in a soul vein, there's also a few rock and vocal numbers that fit in surprisingly well – thanks to some key soulful touches from Bert. Although the Main Ingredient were best known for their early 70's singles, this album from '74 is a wonderfully complex batch of tunes that shows that the group were taking a cue from some of their hipper contemporaries, and pushing past a stock hit formula. Bert DeCoteaux was still arranging, but the group produced themselves, giving the record a sexy funky feeling in the best parts, not that dissimilar from some of Marvin Gaye's work, or records by groups like The Isley Brothers or The O'Jays. Includes great versions of two Seals & Crofts songs – "Summer Breeze" and "Euphrates" – both a perfect example of this style, as is "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" – plus a great reading of Willie Hutch's "California My Way", which has a super-dope sample at the beginning. The work here moves past obvious Motown hits, and really shows the kind of hard-burning stormers that set fire to the British all night dance scene in the 60s – music that moved the mods, then continued to help redefine our understanding of soul for decades to come! The set's a treasure trove of gems – some of which would cost you a pretty penny as original singles – and titles include "For The Love Of Mike" by Patrice Holloway, "You Can Do It" by Kim Weston, "Crying In The Night" by The Monitors, "Baby Come Home To Me" by Shorty Long, "Sure Is A Lotta Woman" by The Isley Brothers, "You're Gonna Love My Baby" by Barbara McNair, "I've Been Blessed" by Bobby Taylor, "Look What You Done Boy" by The Lollipops, "I Miss You Baby" by Marv Johnson, and "Keep On Loving Me" by Frances Nero. ✨✧ Marlon SaundersEnter My Mind ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning debut from singer Marlon Saunders – a fantastic male vocalist who's gonna be huge! Marlon's got a smooth and seductive vocal approach that really takes us back to mellow 70s Isley Brothers, later ballad tracks from the O'Jays, and even a bit of the best work from Marvin Gaye – classic-styled vocals that have a universal soul appeal, sung with a confidence and depth of expression that's rare for male singers in the current age! Marlon's known for his earlier work with the group Jazzhole, but on this set, he moves way ahead of that group – emerging as a bright new soul star to rival the work of D'Angelo or Maxwell! Titles include "Inspiration", "You Move Me", "Enter My Mind", "Keep Doin What Ya Do", "Stone Out Of Hope", and "If It's Magic". CD
