Isley Brothers3 + 3 (plus bonus track) ... CD
T Neck/Legacy, 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback and flowing, with a vibe that's sometimes mellow, sometimes a bit more upbeat – but never too over the top or rocking. Titles include the group's the monster cut "That Lady" (parts 1 & 2) – a totally righteous groover, even if it has been in a million commercials over the years – and their cover of Seals & Croft's epic "Summer Breeze", which is ten times doper than the original! Other tracks include "Listen To The Music", "If You Were There", "What It Comes Down To", and "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". CD includes bonus live version of "That Lady". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersHarvest For The World ... LP
T Neck, 1976. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Fantastic Isleys from the mid-70s! The record has the group dropping their heavy funk style (which was sounding a bit tired by this point), and picking up a strident soul groove that buoyed their tracks with a spiritual sound that reminds us of some of the best moments from the Brother Brother Brother album! This one includes the incredible song "Harvest For The World", one of the most anthemic soul songs of the 70s – and a monster groover that mixes message-driven vocals with some tight guitar work. Other tracks include "You Still Feel the Need", "Let Me Down Easy", and "People of Today" – and the whole album's one of the group's best from the 70s! LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue pressing in a non-gatefold cover, with a cutout hole and a lightly bent corner.)

Isley BrothersHeat Is On (expanded edition) ... CD
T Neck/Epic, 1975. New Copy ... $5.99 6.99
A great mix of heavy funk and sweeter ballads from the Isley Brothers – and a record that's filled with two-part tracks that really let them stretch out and groove! The tunes have a bit more bass and keyboards than before – an approach that's even more electric than Isley funk of a few years back, and which steps out in some tightly vamping rhythms that still crackle with plenty of warmth and soul – especially on the mellower numbers, which dominate side two of the record, and really make this one worth having! Mellow tracks include "For The Love Of You (parts 1 & 2)", "Sensuality (parts 1 & 2)", and "Make Me Say It Again (parts 1 & 2)" – and funkier numbers include "Fight The Power (parts 1 & 2)", "The Heat Is On (parts 1 & 2)", and "Hope You Feel Better Love (parts 1 & 2)". CD also features a bonus track – a live version of "Fight The Power", recorded "live" in the studio, and never released before! CD

Isley BrothersSmooth Sailin' ... LP
Warner, 1987. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Classic 80s work from the Isley Brothers – a set that has the duo of Ronald and Rudolph getting some great help in the studio from Angela Winbush! Angela helped produce the record, and she also wrote many of the songs – and she plays keyboards on the set too, giving the tracks the upbeat, bouncy style you might find in her own recordings of the time. As usual for the duo, the vocals are wonderful – every bit as great as that classic Isley sound first forged in the 70s – warm and magical here, even wrapped around some heavier 80s rhythms. Titles include "Somebody I Used To Know", "I Wish", "Smooth Sailin Tonight", "Come My Way", "Everything Is Alright", "Dish It Out", and "Send A Message". LP, Vinyl record album

T Neck/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiraling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits! The sound's a bit like Terry Callier or Bill Withers, but it's also still got that sexy Isley groove to it – and although the cuts aren't all out funky, there's definitely a lot of funk in the way that they're set up! We love the complexity of the Isleys at this point – really willing to take a chance like this, with results that come out beautifully. Titles include a great version of "Love The One You're With", plus "Machine Gun", "Ohio", "Spill The Wine", and "Lay Lady Lay". LP, Vinyl record album

A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. Other tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". CD

T Neck/Epic, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Although the Isley Brothers seem to be best remembered for their funky work of the 70s – which shows up again and again on compilations and soundtracks of music from the time – we've always equally loved their way with a ballad, as the group had a really sweet sound when they wanted to, perfectly formed for more intimate numbers, which they always still managed to deliver with a slight bit of rhythm under the mix. The set features mostly tracks from their glory years of the 70s – including "Hello It's Me", "Choosey Lover", "Make Me Say It Again Girl (parts 1 & 2)", "All In My Lover's Eyes", "Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (parts 1 & 2)", and "You're The Key To My Heart" – but it also features the big 80s quiet storm hit "Caravan Of Love", which was performed by the Isley Jasper Isley team. 14 tracks in all. ✨✧ Main IngredientEuphrates River ... LP
RCA, 1974. Sealed Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Although the Main Ingredient were best known for their early 70's singles, this album from '74 is a wonderfully complex batch of tunes that shows that the group were taking a cue from some of their hipper contemporaries, and pushing past a stock hit formula. Bert DeCoteaux was still arranging, but the group produced themselves, giving the record a sexy funky feeling in the best parts, not that dissimilar from some of Marvin Gaye's work, or records by groups like The Isley Brothers or The O'Jays. Includes great versions of two Seals & Crofts songs – "Summer Breeze" and "Euphrates" – both a perfect example of this style, as is "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend" – plus a great reading of Willie Hutch's "California My Way", which has a super-dope sample at the beginning. Of course, the album still includes material like their hit " "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", a sweetly style AM radio pop hit in the band's best style of earlier years. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lewis TaylorLewis Taylor ... LP
Island/Be With (UK), 1996. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 39.99
A hell of a classic from UK singer Lewis Taylor – one of the best blue-eyed soul albums recorded in the 90s, and a record that's still years ahead of its time! In a stretch when so many others were putting out fake soul – or breathing heavily on downtempo records – Taylor found a way to really deliver something new and unique, yet also come across with the classic mellow flow of 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye or The Isley Brothers! Taylor's vocal delivery here owes plenty to both, but the production is very crisp and individual – handled by Lewis himself, and in a spare mix of modes that's quite different than some of the more stock "beats and keys" modes that would take over underground soul in the next decade! Instead, there's this great range of subtle tones and textures that work beautifully alongside Taylor's sublime vocals – all to suit some beautifully-written tunes too. Titles include "Lucky", "Track", "Betterlove", "Right", "Spirit", "Bittersweet", and "Whoever". LP, Vinyl record album

Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A great volume in this really unique series – a set that delivers the laidback grooves promised in the title, but often from sources that are quite unusual too! Most of the cuts are soul numbers – including a few underground gems that you'll recognize – but there's also work from other areas too, including a few contemporary numbers mixed in with 70s tracks – which creates this wonderful criss-crossing of modes and spirits, and really extends the collection out past previous volumes! As before, there's a very positive vibe throughout – and titles include "Children Of The Night" by Jones Girls, "You Will Rise" by Sweetback, "Moondance" by Bobby McFerrin, "One" by Lesette Wilson, "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" by Judy Collins, "The Picutre" by Ola Onabule, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Stay With Me Til Dawn" by Judy Tzuke, "Love Is The Answer" by Englad Dan & John Ford Coley, "Programmed For Love" by Dunn Pearson, "Time Flies" by Kazu Matsui Project with Robben Ford, "Bluz 4 Eyes" by Buford Powers, "Riding High" by Faze-O, "Groove With You" by Isley Brothers, and "Flight Of The Blackbyrd" by Zo with Phonte. Northern soul from the source – over two dozen 60s soul stompers from Motown Records – most of them the kind of underground grooves that have always been prized on the Northern scene! The work here moves past obvious Motown hits, and really shows the kind of hard-burning stormers that set fire to the British all night dance scene in the 60s – music that moved the mods, then continued to help redefine our understanding of soul for decades to come! The set's a treasure trove of gems – some of which would cost you a pretty penny as original singles – and titles include "For The Love Of Mike" by Patrice Holloway, "You Can Do It" by Kim Weston, "Crying In The Night" by The Monitors, "Baby Come Home To Me" by Shorty Long, "Sure Is A Lotta Woman" by The Isley Brothers, "You're Gonna Love My Baby" by Barbara McNair, "I've Been Blessed" by Bobby Taylor, "Look What You Done Boy" by The Lollipops, "I Miss You Baby" by Marv Johnson, and "Keep On Loving Me" by Frances Nero. ✨✧ MaxwellMaxwell's Urban Hang Suite ... CD
Columbia, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent bit of modern soul – a smooth seductive album that fits perfectly with an older mellow groove, but which also sparkles with the best recent efforts of the past decade. Maxwell's got a wonderful vocal style – reminding us a bit of classic Isley Brothers, Leon Ware, or O'Jays in a ballad mode – and it sits perfectly amidst warm jazzy arrangements by Musze, filled with all the subtle instrumental touches (keyboards, sax, and guitar) you'd find on a late album by Marvin Gaye, or some of the slow jams by the Isleys. The vibe is warm and acoustic, and the record's a wonderful return to a classic mellow midtempo soul style – and did quite well upon its initial release. Also interesting was the fact that the record was pressed up heavily on vinyl – something that was rare for a mainstream soul album at the time, and which was particularly ubiquitous in our hometown of Chicago, where DJs on the steppers scene were snatching up the record like hotcakes! Includes the titles "Ascension", "Whenever Wherever Whatever", "Lonely's The Only Company (parts 1 & 2)", "Reunion", and "Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)" – but the whole thing's great! CD

RCA, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful vocals from Xavier Omar – a singer who maybe takes us back to the classic 70s sound of the Isley Brothers with the way he cascades and flows between the record's gentle grooves – but an artist who's definitely set up here in a much more contemporary mode! Omar's a soul singer, but one with a very open ear to hip hop production – and the approach of the record often takes his vocals and layers them alongside these gentle beats and really crisp sonic touches that give the whole record a wonderful sound, but without ever denying the vocal strength that is at the core. There's a few moments where guest MCs step into the mix to further the hip hop vibe – and titles include "Want/Need", "Something Changed", "So Much More", "Surf", "Bon Iverre", "More Than Less", and "Lil Healer". ✨✧ Buddy MilesExpressway To Your Skull/Electric Church/Them Changes/We Got To Live Together ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four heavy classics from Buddy Miles – all together in a single set! First up is Expressway To Your Skull – a super tripped-out blend of rock, funk, and soul – easily one of Buddy Miles' most mindblowing albums – and a classic that never lets up at all! Buddy's leading the whole group on drums – really kicking things large from behind the kit – while the rest of the group jams in a heavy style that's got plenty of fuzzed-out guitar and jazzy horn riffs – virtually a blueprint for countless other rock funk groups that copped Buddy's style in years to come. The drums alone are worth the price of admission – but the whole album's so right, tight, and outta sight that it's been a favorite in our crates for years! Titles include "Train", "Let Your Lovelight Shine", "Don't Mess With Cupid", "Funky Mule", and "Wrap It Up". Electric Church is filled with bluesy soul from Buddy Miles – an album that was half-produced by Jimi Hendrix, and which showcases the really crowd-pleasing side of Miles' sound! Tracks are a mix of soul covers and original numbers – done in a mode that puts plenty of guitar out front in the mix, and which uses Buddy's screaming vocals a bit more than his heavier drums. Horns are used on most numbers to give them a bit of southern soul inflection, and titles include a great live jamming take on "Wrap It Up", the funky "Destructive Love", and the cuts "Cigarettes & Coffee", "Miss Lady", "Texas", and "My Chant". Them Changes is a landmark album of crossover funk – fuzzed out rock, soul, and jazzy licks all coming into play together – held totally tight by drummer Buddy Miles, the undisputed king of his scene! Buddy's drums are super-heavy – holding down his Freedom Express group with a heavy jazz-rock sound that would soon have a huge influence on other groups. Includes Buddy's original version of "Them Changes" – a tune that was instantly covered by everyone at the time – plus the cuts "Memphis Train", "Your Feeling Is Mine", "Dreams", and "Down By The River". Last up is We Got To Live Together – pure crossover genius from Buddy Miles – a great mix of funky soul and rockish touches – and the kind of record that easily put Buddy in the same camp as Sly Stone or The Isley Brothers with mainstream audiences of the time! Tracks here are a bit longer and more jamming than work by either of those two artists – with the kind of heavy guitar and horns that played heavily to the Fillmore crowd – but the overall sound of the record is a fair bit more soulful and even funkier than some other Miles' efforts from the earlier years too, with plenty of his tight drums in the mix! Titles include a great 12 minute reading of the title track "We Got To Live Together" – plus "Take It Off Him & Put It On Me", "Runaway Child", "Walking Down The Highway", and "Easy Greasy". CD

One of the most sweetly soulful sets we've ever heard from Peven Everett – a laidback session that's a nice change from some of his more upbeat grooves – and one that places him solidly in the territory of mid 70s Isley Brothers or Marvin Gaye! Tunes are simple, but have a real sense of warmth – thanks to Peven's mellow vocals and keyboard work, and occasional jazzy touches that shade things in with a nice sense of color. There's beats at the bottom of most tunes, but they never move too fast – more in a mellow or midtempo mode that's totally great – and a whole new side of Peven's mighty talents.
