Irene KralBetter Than Anything ... CD
AVA/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1963. Used ... $9.99
Great work by a great singer – the far under-recorded Irene Kral, a lovely lady who really bridges a number of different camps in the vocal jazz world! At one level, Irene's got the coolness of a Christy or Connor, but at another, she's got a more open, swinging, and soulful style – one that comes off with none of the hoke of Anita O'Day, and which is a perfect balance between class, cool, and easy going honesty. The trio of Junior Mance provides the backings, and titles include "Better Than Anything", "The Meaning Of The Blues", "Passing By", "No More", "Nobody Else But Me", "This Is Always", and "It's A Wonderful World". Irene KralWonderful Life ... CD
Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
One of the more obscure 60s albums cut by jazz vocalist Irene Kral – and a great little record that shows her to be more of a singer than we expected! Some of the tunes on the set have the straight vocals with band feel of Irene's other albums, but a few more go for a groovier sort of 60s sound that we really love – pushing Irene almost into pop vocal territory, but with enough jazz and enough class to keep things cool. Overall, the album's sort of in the range of similar mid and late 60s work by Blossom Dearie or Chris Connor – and the set list includes a lot of hip tunes, like "Nothing Like You", "Wonderful Life", "There Is No Right Way", "Is It Over Baby?", "Goin To California", and "I've Never Been Anything". Shelly Manne/Jack Sheldon/Irene Kral/Johnny WilliaMy Fair Lady – With The Un-Original Cast ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Near Mint- ... $5.99 7.99
Way way more than just a simple "jazz meets Broadway" session – as Shelly's working here with vocals by Jack Sheldon & Irene Kral, and arrangements by soundtrack maestro Johnny Williams – in a style that completely recasts the score! The album's got a really dynamic kind of range – one that's purely phonographic, and not just a weak attempt to capture Broadway on wax. Jack and Irene perform the work with a style that's personal and intimate, and Williams' arrangements have a swinging 60s flair that's totally great – and made even better by players that include Don Sleet, Russ Freeman, and Charlie Kennedy. Titles include "I'm An Ordinary Man", "Why Can't The English", "Ascot Gavote", "Show Me", "The Rain In Spain", and "You Did It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has some ringwear, edge wear, and yellowing from age.)

✨✧ Irene KralAngel Eyes – Live In Tokyo (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Muzak (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Lovely lovely work from Irene Kral – a Japanese-only session from the 70s, and one of her best efforts from the time! Irene's vocals have never sounded better – strong and confident, but not in a cloying way that gets in the way of the tunes – working with a piano trio led by Alan Broadbent that's wonderfully adaptive to the mood of the tunes, especially from a rhythmic standpoint – as a number of the tracks turn out to be great groovers in the end! The album's a perfect example of the way that American singers were always able to find a hipper vibe when recording in Japan during the 70s (like Dee Dee Bridgewater or Lorez Alexandria, to name a few others recorded this way!) The set's got a great version of "On A Clear Day", a snapping jazz dance take on "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", plus the cuts "Star Eyes", "Misty Roses", "Angel Eyes", "Corcovado", and "Everytime We Say Goodbye". Double-length set, with 21 titles in all – all of the material recorded during two nights of performance! CD

✨✧ Irene KralKral Space ... LP
Catalyst, 1977. Good ... Out Of Stock
Hip, breezy, and wonderful! Irene Kral's a good vocalist, but she's never been one of our favorites – until we heard this album! The record's a totally hip batch of jazzy tracks with a 70s approach to the kind of underground songwriter styles used in the 60s by artists like Jackie & Roy or Bob Dorough. No surprise that Kral sings some tracks by cronies of those singers – like Tommy Wolf, Fran Landesman, and Dave Frishberg. Backing's by an acoustic quartet that features Alan Broadbent on piano and Emil Richards on vibes and percussion – and tracks include "Small Day Tomorrow", "Some Time Ago", "It's Nice Weather For Ducks", "Experiment", and "Wheelers & Dealers".
