Invisible SessionEchoes Of Africa ... CD
Space Echo (Italy), 2021. Used ... $11.99
There's plenty of Afro Funk influence in this album from Invisible Session – a long-running act who've given us a number of excellent records on the Schema label – but there's also plenty of the group's own spirit too, thanks in part to trombone and keyboards from the mighty Gianluca Petrella, who keeps plenty of the core jazzy elements intact! Leader Luciano Cantone wrote and produced the album – and brings in his own keyboards and vibes next to the rhythm programs that direct the proceedings – which also feature acoustic drums and percussion, more horn work, and vocals on two tracks – although most of the record is instrumental. In a way, the group's going for a hybrid of styles that's similar to the Latin-based albums that Gerardo Frisina has done on the Schema label – a similarly strong mix of inspirations and new expressions, on titles that include "People All Around The World Can Make It", "Hearing The Call", "Pull The Handbrake", "Journey To The East", "Mother Forgive Us", and "Ideas Can Make The World". ✨✧ Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser HolmesHeritage Of The Invisible II ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the boldest albums so far on the International Anthem label – and that's really saying a lot, given the boldness of most of their records! The set features wonderfully dynamic energy from Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes – the former a trumpeter, the latter a drummer – but, as with all IA artists, able to work in many different modes at once – really taking the record past their core instrumental contributions! Navarro adds in work on moog and juno keyboards, plus a bit of voice and percussion – and the whole thing is blended together with the kind of production work and editing that make a record like this as much of a sonic experience as it is a session of free-thinking jazz. Titles include "Initial Meditation", "MONK", "Father", "NAVARROHOLMES", "Interlude/Interludio", "Pueblo", and "A Night In NY". LP, Vinyl record album

Afro Soul ProphecyHeat In The City ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99
A bright new groove on the Schema Records label – but one that features work from some of the company's real heavyweights in recent years – as the album was conceived and produced by Lucio Cantone (aka Invisible Session), and features tunes written by the funky Alex Puddu – all in a style that's heavy on the 70s funk influences that grace the music of both artists! The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! Titles include "Fire In Acapulco", "Heat In The City", "Everybody's Going Uptown", "Red Light District", and "The Crowd Pleaser". CD features the bonus tracks "Summer Of 75" and "The Game Of Love". ✨✧ Ray BryantRay Bryant Trio (Prestige) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used ... $8.99
A great early trio session from Ray Bryant – the kind of record that instantly shows why he caught such fire on the scene! There's a simplicity here that's almost invisible – a command of the keys that's strong, but not nearly as show-offy as some of Bryant's contemporaries. And given that Ray always managed to kick up a groove on the left side of the keyboard with his firm approach to rhythm, he's definitely a group player in the trio on the set – an excellent combo that features the wonderful Ike Issacs on bass and Specs Wright on drums. Titles include "Splittin", "Golden Earrings", "Sonar", "Blues Changes", and "Daahoud". CD

John Coltrane & Don CherryAvant-Garde ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino (Japan), 1960. Used ... $9.99
A beautiful meeting of two major talents from the left end of jazz – recorded in the early 60's when both were working for Atlantic! Despite the "avant garde" title, this set is straighter than you'd expect – very much in the spirit of Coltrane's work for the label, but with perhaps some of the more angular styles that Cherry was laying down with Ornette Coleman at the time. The session has Coltrane joining Ornette's group of Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell – save for a few numbers that feature Percy Heath on bass instead of Haden. The set includes great readings of Ornette's "The Blessing", "The Invisible", and "Focus On Sanity", and Coltrane plays both soprano sax and tenor! CD

✨✧ Ben WatsonDerek Bailey & The Story Of Free Improvisation ... Book
Verso, 2013. New Copy ... $6.99 26.95
An incredibly deep book on the life and music of Derek Bailey – the British guitarist who really helped push the sound of free improvisation forward in the 60s and 70s, then continued with a legacy of creative music for decades more! Ben Watson knocks it out of the park with this one – as the volume features countless hours of interview material with Bailey, and many of his contemporaries – woven into an extremely thoughtful history that spends a great deal of time looking at Derek's role in British mainstream music of the 50s and early 60s, where he had a great career in dance bands – then his completely surprising decision to step outside and work in a completely different way! Watson has a clear knowledge of Bailey's genius, and a deep understanding of his music – and almost sets a new standard for jazz biography with his work in this volume. The book even has some great appendix chapters – including a Derek Bailey discography, a discography of his Incus Records label, and even all of the Invisible Jukebox sessions that Bailey did for the British press over the years. 459 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Sun RaCymbals/Symbols Sessions – New York City 1973 (colored vinyl) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99 35.99
A lost slice of work from Sun Ra's early 70s years on Impulse Records – one of the few new recordings created for his association with that label (most of the titles were reissues of earlier Saturn albums) – but one that was never issued at the time! Cymbals saw some release later, during the 90s – but this package really expands on that album by adding in a whole extra set of recordings from what appear to be the same sessions – and which really flesh out the vibe of the performance! The core group is a sextet – with Ra at the helm on some of his cool electric keyboards – including minimoog, rocksichord, and Gibson Kalamazoo – with acoustic work from Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet, Tal Ebah on trumpet, Ronny Boykins on bass, Harry Ar on drums, and Derek Morris on congas. Much of the core music explores a tension between Ra's cosmic keys and the more earthy sound of the acoustic instruments – but the added material here opens up some nicely different moods, and makes the whole thing explode with deep colors. Titles on Cymbals include "Land Of The Day Star", "Thoughts Under A Dark Blue Light", "The Mystery Of Two", and "The World Of The Invisible" – and added tracks include "Space Landing", "Of Drastic Measures", "Of Otherness", "The Universe Is Calling", and "Destination Of The Known Universe". ✨✧ VariousDon't Stop – Recording Tap ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not much of a cover photo, but one of the most amazing collections so far from the Numero Group – a richly archival project that finally brings to light the lost efforts of the short lived Tap Records label! Tap was the brainchild of Jeremiah Yisrael – an ambitious producer, and legendary perfectionist – so much so that he often put more effort into these indie productions than you'd find at bigger label projects of the time! Most material here dates from the years 1981 and 1982, and the music is a mix of club, modern soul, boogie, and a bit of hip hop – nearly all of which hardly got any exposure at the time. The booklet not only tells the tale of the label and Yisrael's career, but also Numero's efforts in resurrecting these lost tapes from a very moldy near-death experience – a narrative that's almost as exciting as the music in the package. And the package is pretty great too – not only because of the 24 page, full color booklet – but also because of the supplemental book that reproduces lost sheet music and studio notes from the Tap sessions. Amazing stuff throughout – well worthy of another deep bow for the Numero team – with a total of 14 tracks that include "Breakout" and "We've Had Enough" by Arnie Love & The Lovettes, "Invisible Wind" and "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "Missy Missy Dee" by Missy Dee & The Melody Crew, "So Nice" by Annette Denvil, "Rub A Dub Dub" by The Fabulous 3 MCs, "Don't Stop Dancin" and "Run Away Hide From Love" by Jackie Stoudemire, and "Breakout" by Magnetism. Also features two tracks from 1971 – "Does He Really Mean It" and "Love Which Way" by Bonnie Freeman. CD
