Danny WoodsAries ... LP
Invictus, 1972. Sealed ... $11.99 16.99
A rare solo effort from Danny Woods – a record cut away from Chairmen Of The Board during a stretch when the group had temporarily disbanded – and an excellent showcase for Danny's strength on his own! Woods is really wonderful here – with a proud, righteous quality that really soars out away from General Johnson and Harrison Kennedy – perfect for the righteous backings arranged by HB Barnum and McKinley Jackson – whose spirits really fit some of the more progressive modes of the music. There's plenty of upbeat, positive moments throughout – and titles include "Two Can Be As Lonely As One", "Let Me Ride", "It Didn't Take Long", "Everybody's Got A Song To Sing", "Working On A Building Of Love", and "Roller Coaster". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed with hype sticker. Recent UK reissue on Demon.)

✨✧ Freda PayneBand Of Gold ... LP
Invictus, Early 70s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Freda Payne! Freda had been knocking around a bit as a more jazz-oriented singer, and had cut one album for Impulse and one for MGM before this one – but when she hooked up with the hitmaking Holland-Dozier-Holland team for this record, her career really went over the top! The team take Payne's deep soulful voice away from the sophisticated pop of earlier years, and hook it up with a mix of fuzzy Detroit soul and sweeter southern styles. The album includes loads of great cuts – most notably the sublime crossover hit "Band of Gold", but also plenty of other lesser-known gems, like "The Easiest Way to Fall", "Unhooked Generation", "Deeper and Deeper", and "This Girl Is a Woman Now". Her best by far! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has heavy wear at the spine, some aging, and a name in pen on front and back. Labels have a name in pen.)

✨✧ Lamont DozierLove & Beauty (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A massive album by Lamont Dozier – probably his best ever! Every cut's a winner, and the LP shines with a sharpness and tightness that's missing from some of Lamont's other LPs from the 70s. The songwriting is impeccable – and as the album progresses, you get that eerie "deja vu" feeling you can have when discovering a landmark work for the first time. There's a hint of funk in the mix, but the strongest point is the production – which bowls over the top with a mix of strings, piano, and Lamont's wonderfully honest vocals. Includes the wonderful soul anthem "Don't Leave Me", which comes up again in a very tight instrumental version – plus the tracks "The Picture Will Never Change", "Why Can't We Be Lovers", and "Slipping Away". Great all the way through, and a stunning bit of seventies soul that will have you returning again and again! CD features a massive 10 bonus tracks too – including "Superwoman", "Lady By Day", "I'm Gonna Hijack Ya", "Don't Leave Me Starvin For Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Why Can't We Be Lovers (single)", "Let's Get Together", "I'm So Glad (parts 1 & 2)", and "You Took Me From A World Outside". Sterling HarrisonOne Size Fits All ... CD
Everland (Austria), 1981. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
Early work from Sterling Harrison – a soul singer who was mostly missed the first time around, but has had more of a revival in recent decades – although maybe not as strongly as on this obscure west coast album recorded with the production team of Holland Dozier Holland! This isn't Motown HDH, nor even their Invictus/Hot Wax style – as the album has a strong 80s soul vibe throughout, with lots of beats, keyboards, and catchy numbers in a boogie funk mode – yet it's also clear the top-shelf studio help really gives the record a lot more focus and punch than other efforts of this nature, in a way that mixes Sterling's deep soul vocal inclinations with some material that could have crossed over at the time. Titles include "Star Chaser", "I Feel The Love", "You've Got That Thing", "Take It All The Way", "She's So Sensitive", "One Size Fits All", and "Abba Dabba Do". CD

Jackson 5ABC ... LP
Motown, 1970. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A seminal step forward for this legendary group – easily one of the greatest albums they ever cut! With ABC, the Jacksons are expanding their sound with the club-oriented grooves of the time – using Holland, Dozier, and Holland on many cuts, trying for a similar soaring groove as some of the trio's work on their own Invictus label. The move's actually a great one – as the maturing group has a strong adult harmony sound, the one that they would lean on more heavily during their years as The Jacksons, and which calls for much smoother arrangements than before. The record's got a surprisingly righteous, joyous sort of sound – and titles include "The Love You Save", "ABC", "One More Chance", "Never Had A Dream Come True", "I'll Bet You", "I Found That Girl", "La-La Means I Love You", "2-4-6-8", and "The You Folks". Jackson 5Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5/ABC ... CD
Motown, 1969/1970. Used ... $12.99
2 of the best records ever by The Jackson 5! Diana Ross Presents is the fantastic first record from the Jacksons – who were totally great, even at this early stage of their career. Proof enough is their big hit, the always-wonderful "I Want You Back", one of those tunes that we've heard a million times, but still love to death. Also included are a number of covers – like "Stand", "My Cherie Amour", and "Standing In The Shadows of Love" – all done in the nice Jacksons style. With ABC, the boys are expanding their sound with the club-oriented grooves of the time – using Holland, Dozier, and Holland on many cuts, trying for a similar strident groove as some of the trio's work on their own Invictus label. The move's actually a great one – as the maturing group has a strong adult harmony sound, the one that they would lean on more heavily during their years as The Jacksons, and which calls for much smoother arrangements than before. The record's got a strident righteous sound – and titles include "Forever Came Today", "Moving Violation", "You Were Made Especially For Me", "Honey Love", "Body Language", "All I Do Is Think Of You", and "Breezy". CD also features the bonus track "Oh I've Been Bless'd". CD

Love, Peace, & HappinessHere 'Tis ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". Great reissue – with excellent sound and very detailed notes! CD

Freda PaynePayne & Pleasure ... CD
ABC/Reel Music, 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Genius work from Freda Payne – a set recorded after her bigger fame years for Invictus/Hot Wax – but a record that's done with an even deeper feel overall! The album features some key contributions from Lamont Dozier – who wasn't credited on the original record, due to his continuing contract with HDH – and his bold, righteous approach in the studio is definitely felt here – as he gives Freda the same great groove he'd hit on his own ABC albums! As with those, McKinley Jackson handles the arrangements – which work perfectly with the punctuated groove of Dozier's production – and Payne really sparkles in the setting, stretching out with these magnificent vocals that go way beyond what you might expect. The tunes are impeccable – as well-written as those on other Dozier projects of the time – loads of original numbers that include "Didn't I Tell You", "It's Yours To Have", "I Get Carried Away", "Run For Your Life", "Shadows On The Wall", and "Don't Wanna Be Left Out" – plus versions of "A Song For You" and "I Won't Last A Day". VariousDetroit Gold – 70s Soul Grooves From The Motor City ... CD
Backbeats (UK), Early 70s. Used ... $11.99 14.99
The title definitely gets it right – as the set's filled with post-Motown gems from Detroit – a wealth of wonderful sounds from the Hot Wax/Invictus labels – almost all of it produced by the Holland-Dozier-Holland team! The music here represents the next evolution of Detroit soul in the years after the initial wave of Motown – music that still carries a lot of the spirit of before, and some of the style (given that HDH were working for the company) – but which also pushes things forward with a prouder, more righteous sound as well! The CD features a heady 23 tracks in all – with titles that include "Trapped In A Love" by Barrino Brothers, "Something New About You" by Silent Majority, "Let's Change The Subject" by Satisfaction Unlimited, "Tighten Him Up" by Eloise Laws, "Nothing Sweeter Than Love" by 100 Proof, "Only Time Will Tell" by General Johnson, "Deeper & Deeper" by Freda Payne, "Just As Long" by The 8th Day, "You've Made Me So Very Happy" by Honey Cone, "Two Can Be As Lonely As One" by Danny Woods, and "Bright City Lights" by Satisfaction Unlimited. ✨✧ Jackson 5Dancing Machine/Moving Violation (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown, 1974/1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 Jackson 5 classics on one CD! Dancing Machine contains some excellent later work by the Jacksons, featuring a shift from their earlier pop material, into a great style that was a bit more baroque, and which yielded some very nice moments. The album includes the funky pre-disco "Dancing Machine", a perennial favorite – but the real treats are the cuts "The Mirrors Of My Mind" and the haunting "I Am Love", an beautiful symphonic soul track with a sound that still blows us away! On Moving Violation the boys are expanding their sound with the club-oriented grooves of the time – using Holland, Dozier, and Holland on many cuts, trying for a similar strident groove as some of the trio's work on their own Invictus label.
