Philip BaileyInside Out ... LP
Columbia, 1986. Sealed ... $3.99
Philip Bailey hits a great groove here – working with Nile Rodgers, who gives him a lean, clean sound that works perfectly with his vocals! The sound is a nice change from the direction Bailey was heading in previously – a return to the focused soul of the later Earth Wind & Fire years, with his amazing lead opening up in ways that few other singers can match. Tunes are pretty well-penned too – catchy, but never cloyingly commercial – and titles include "State Of The Heart", "Welcome To The Club", "Special Effect", "Because Of You", "Take This With You", "The Day Will Come", "Back It Up", and "Echo My Heart". ✨✧ Trina BroussardInside My Love ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". CD also features the bonus track "It's Not Really Christmas". CD

Earl KlughEarl Klugh/Living Inside Your Love/Magic In Your Eyes ... CD
Blue Note/BGO (UK), 1976/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of Earl Klugh albums from the mid-to-late 70s – Earl Klugh, Living Inside Your Love and Magic In Your Eyes – in a 2CD set! Earl Klugh is the guitarists debut – a player whose sound went onto dominate late 70s fusion in a big big way! Klugh's clearly stepping here into a space allowed by George Benson at the time – a blend of jazz and R&B that's warmer and mellower than work previously done on Blue Note in the decade (or on CTI and Kudu for that matter) – one that's less focused on rhythm than it is on tone, and the kind of setting that allows Earl to shine wonderfully. There's a lot less of the cheesiness here that would hurt Klugh's later albums, and the overall presentation is nicely retrained – arranged by Dave Grusin at a time when he still knew how to bring a good deal of soul into a session, avoiding cliche and letting the soloist step forth unmarred. Other players include Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Grusin himself – and Klugh plays both electric and acoustic guitar, on tunes that include "Angelina", "Slippin In The Back Door", "Vonetta", "Waltz For Debby", and "Wind & The Sea". Living Inside Your Love is his second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". Magic In Your Eyes is another sweet early effort from Klugh, with the title track plus "Alicia", "Julie", "Rose Hips", "Cry A Little While", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" and more. CD

Earl Klugh's second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. Part of the charm of the set is the strong use of acoustic guitar on the sessions – played by Klugh in a manner that has some strong Brazilian references, and which provides a nice contrast to the other electric instrumentation used on the record. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". CD

Shaolin Temple DefendersFrom The Inside ... CD
Soulbeats (France), 2013. Used ... $8.99
The amazing return of the Shaolin Temple Defenders – a group who've really deepened their sound since we last heard from them! On previous albums, the Defenders were a razor-sharp funk combo – a French ensemble who'd really studied the funky 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – and definitely knew how to get that sound right! This time around, they've also picked up a deep soul vibe as well – bringing vocals into the mix even more strongly than before – sung by Brother Lion with this raspy style that feels like some of the best southern soul at the start of the 70s. The funky currents of the group are still firmly in place – sometimes with a heavy 70s twist, sometimes with a more laidback vibe that lets the vocals take center stage – and titles include "Blue Shades", "Do You Remember", "Spirit Of The South", "Temple Of Soul", "Super Nacho Funk", "Let Your Love Shine On Me", "It's So Easy", "Our Love Will Live Forever", and a cover of "Kung Fu Fighting". The whole thing's great – a really really mighty package of grooves that grabs us like the best on Compost these days – and titles include "Raw" by Beatfanatic, "Little Things" by Lindberg Hemmer Foundation with Mark Murphy, "Million Ways" by Povo, "Superpower" by Damn, "Close Your Eyes" by Jan Lundgren Trio, "Late Night Junction" by Stockholm Cyclo, "Zodiac" by 3 Foot People, and "Tudo Esta Previsto" by A Bossa Eletrica. Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
London is exploding again with fantastic music – and this time around, it's the city's jazz underground that comes forward to remind us what a unique musical crossroads the city can be! The work here represents an incredible new scene that's pushing boundaries all over again – not the avant jazz of London improvisers, nor the electric sounds of the broken beat world, or retro funk of another scene – but fantastic acoustic jazz that at one level brings back deeper spiritual sounds from generations back, but at another flings forward its sounds with inspiration that will be setting the standard for years to come. We've only had a few of these artists on record before, and together they work beautifully as a strong new proclamation of talent – on titles that include "Once" by Nubya Garcia, "Inside The Acorn" by Maisha, "Pure Shade" by Ezra Collective, "The Balance" by Moses Boyd, "Brockley" by Theon Cross, "Walls" by Triforce, "Black Skin Black Masks" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Go See" by Joe Armon Jones, and "Abusey Junction" by Kokoroko. ✨✧ Isley BrothersInside You/Real Deal ... CD
T Neck/BGO (UK), 1981/1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two early 80s groovers from the Isleys – on one great CD! Inside You is a strong extension of the group's funky 70s style – moving into a more compressed mode that had been taking hold of the group's style over the past few albums, giving them a smoother finish, but one that actually brought out some even more soulful feelings from their overall work. As always, we dig the mellow cuts best – especially the two part "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and the stepper "Welcome Into My Heart". Other tracks include "First Love", "Baby Hold On", and "Love Zone" and "Inside You". The Real Deal is authentic 80s grooving from the Isleys – mostly an album of upbeat, electro-grooving numbers that change up the style a bit more from their 70s funk work. But as usual for this period, they actually sound best on the ballads – clocking in with the sweet slow tune "All In My Lovers Eyes", and sounding even nicer on the anthemic "I'll Do It All For You" – a great little track with a bubbling, steppish groove. Other tracks include "The Real Deal", "Stone Cold Lover", "Are You With Me", and "Under The Influence". CD

A beautiful document of an equally beautiful architectural triumph – the Le Courbusier-designed pavillion for Philips electronics at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair – not just a corporate showpiece, but also home to the stunning experimental film Le Poeme Electronique, which featured music from composer Edgar Varese! The outside of the structure is pictured on the cover here – and in many other details inside – and the inside of the structure is featured as well, with images both from the film, and the stunned visitors inside – as the book lays out not just Courbusier's intentions with the building, but also the cultural creativity that went into its contents, the responses of both the audiences and Philips corporation, and the legacy of the work after the fair was over. A wicked set of electro soul from Klique – a trio who've got a lot more to offer than some of their 80s groove contemporaries! The backings are a bit more electric than the funk of their roots, but the overall groove is graced with very strong vocals from the trio of Howard Huntsberry, Debbie Hunter, and Isaac Suthers – who alternate lead and backgrounds, in a way that gives the record the fuller feel you might hear from a group like One Way! The trio get some great help on production and arrangements from Thomas McClary of The Commodores – who brings in all that group's best early modes here – on titles that include "Try It Out", "Burning Hot", "Honey", "Stop Doggin Me Around", "Flashback", "Inside Me", and "Tender Footed". Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Matt BerryBlue Elephant ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The music of Matt Berry just keeps getting better and better – to a point where he's almost creating a parallel career to his work on screen – one that's equally great, but which is completely different overall! Berry brought out a wealth of vintage keyboards for the record – pulled from his huge collection – and he mixes those with subtle work on guitar, and guest drums and percussion – all in this swirling blend of sounds that really surpasses the instrumentation of any of his previous work! The set's much more instrumental than vocal – which is maybe part of the charm – and Berry's turned out to be a hell of a musician, as well as a great producer – as he manages to make the record resonate with just the right currents of contemporary psych, but without ever overindulging in that approach. At times, his command of a variety of instruments handled just by himself in the studio seems to rival the work of Sean O'Hagan – and titles include "I Cannot Speak", "Summer Sun", "Safer Passage", "Now Disappear", "Alone", "Blues Inside Me", "Like Stone", "Forget Me", and "Invisible". Al Cohn & Shorty RogersEast Coast – West Coast Scene ... LP
RCA, 1954. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A classic session in the tried and true marketing style of "East Coast vs West Coast" jazz, with one side of tracks by a group led by Al Cohn, and featuring Gene Quill, Hal McKusick, and Joe Newman. The other side's got Shorty Rogers representin' on the West Coast, with Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, and Shelly Manne. The album's a nice batch of tracks, in the tightly arranged style that characterizes many of these mid-50's RCA jazz sessions. However, since Cohn's measured playing could never really be taken for New York Hot, and since his longtime partner Zoot Sims is part of Rogers' West Coast group, it's hard to say that these sides are really any sort of true battle between the coasts. Instead, though, the tracks are nice and long, with more room for solos than usual, and titles that include "Loki", "Cool Sunshine", and "Inside Out". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... LP
Uni, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisMiles Davis At Fillmore – Live At Fillmore East ... CD
Columbia, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Four sides of long improvised grooves from Miles Davis – a set that's quite similar to the classic studio album Bitches Brew, but which captures the sound in more open live setting! Each track on each side is named "Wednesday Miles", "Thursday Miles", and so on – after the night it was recorded – and is one of the few documents of the Miles electric group that features Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Grossman on saxes, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion. The work is more inside than some of the Davis Japanese sessions of the time, but no less revolutionary – really opening up in some wonderful ways – with lots of spacious modal riffing over some heavy vamps. Groovy and quite free at the same time, but not nearly as out as the later electric recordings! CD

A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. The 5 Royales certainly rock, and they also serve up plenty of soul too – as the group had a huge influence on music on both sides of the fence – and were also a key inspiration for the funky work of James Brown as well! The group started out on King Records, home to James' early music too – and they've got a raw way of laying out vocals that are right on the rhythms, right on the money, often supported by a sharp guitar line too – all at a level that's different than some of the sweeter doo wop of their generation, and which made the Royales one of the most hard-hitting groups of the time! Grand Funk live – stepping out here with all the raw power of the group at the start – the kind of sound that made them a long-running favorite for fans in the know! There's an intensity here right from the start – a blend of bass, drums, and guitar that rivals some of the headiest work coming out of Detroit at the end of the 60s – maybe no surprise, as much of the set was recorded there, where the kickass sound of the group are clearly appreciated by the crowd! If you only thought of these guys as pop rockers, there's plenty here that will blow your mind – a wealth of freak and fuzz on titles that include "Paranoid", "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home", "Hooked On Love", "Get It Together", "TNUC", and "Inside Looking Out". Mats GustafssonTorturing The Saxophone ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
Mats Gustafsson tortures the saxophone – but tortures it beautifully, too – in this wonderful set of solo tracks that mix tenor and live electronics, baritone and music box, and some solo baritone moments too! The title's a reference to a hilarious letter sent to Mats by Robert Crumb – who also did the lettering on the front – reproduced inside, in which Crumb says that he just really doesn't get this kind of music, or understand why anyone would want to listen to it too! Yet there's a beauty and fragility to the record that honestly make it one of Gustafsson's most compelling albums ever – especially the leadoff mix of tenor and electronics, laid out over five famous Duke Ellington numbers – all completely transformed by the process. Ellington titles include "Come Sunday", "In A Sentimental Mood", "I Never Felt This Way Before", and "Blue Goose" – and the set also features versions of the Ayler classics "Angels/Spirits" and "Ghosts" – and a 22 minute take on Lars Gullin's "Danny's Dream". A fantastic pairing of players – two musicians who really bring out the best in each other in this set of improvisations recorded during the Krakow Jazz Festival – really bold basswork from the legendary Barry Guy, and the kind of ever-changing sounds, shapes, and tones that we always love from the reedwork of Ken Vandermark! Guy seems more on fire here than many other recordings from the time – and there's a photo inside the cover that really reflects the kind of warm intimacy and understanding he has with Vandermark – this really sport of special improvising magic that flows effortlessly throughout. Vandermark plays clarinet and a variety of saxes – and titles include "Black White Red Blue", "Riding The Air", "Curving Of The Wave", "I Will Sing You Of The Moments", "Shadow Cuts Light", and "Nature Is A Wolf". ✨✧ Herbie HancockEmpyrean Isles (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". Also includes 2 CD bonus cuts! CD

An extended album-length improvisation – featuring Elisabeth Harnik on piano and Michael Zerang on some of the most inventive drum work we've heard from him in years! Both players have a way of handling their instruments far beyond conventional modes – which also includes using parts that aren't normally involved directly in making music – so that the drum kit and piano are turned inside out at moments, with sounds coming together in ways that really get past any sort of familiar expections you might have from the words piano and drums! High Note, 2015. Used ... $13.99
Stunning work from trumpeter Tom Harrell – a player who's been making records for decades, but who really seems to be hitting a creative high point in his great flurry of recent albums! This sparkling set is one of Harrell's best of the bunch – a set that's got Tom blowing in these richly colorful extrapolations on themes from Debussy and Ravel, but turned inside-out so that there's no classicism at all – just the best use of musical ideas from the composers, which Harrell then takes into these jazzy patterns that are really wonderful – delivered gently on his own trumpet and flugelhorn, in a group that features flute from Charles Pillow, soprano and tenor from Wayne Escoffery, and piano from Danny Grissett! The group also adds in a violin and cello – but used in very un-classical ways that are extremely haunting – and Tom also works with a few of his own compositions as well. Wonderful stuff – with titles that include "Reverie", "Beau Soir", "Perspectives", "Musique Du Cafe", "Sarabande", and "Voices". CD

Atco/Rhino, 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Landmark stuff, and a beautiful album that mixes soulful tracks with Donny's nascent jazz sensibility! The set's a key chapter in the history of soul music – a record that has Donny emerging from shadows of the Chicago studio scene to become one of the most promising soul artists of the 70s. The album was recorded in Chicago, with a host of great players that had been gigging for years in the Chess studios – and the record is the rich culmination of talents that had been brewing in the Windy City for years. Includes the monster hit "The Ghetto" – one of Donny's best-known tracks and a rollicking funky number – in a full extended version with a good instrumental breakdown. Also features a remake of "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)", which shows Donny's strong ties to the Earth, Wind, & Fire organization – plus moody spiritual numbers like "I Believe To My Soul", "Thank You Master", and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black". One CD bonus cut, "A Dream", is previously unissued. Great notes, too! CD

Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Beautiful trio material from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – a player with a great sense of rhythm, and a nice sharp edge in his music! Intra's piano is quite modern at times, although never in ways that are too out or academic – always coming back to the inside for some warmer notes that really make the tunes appealing – a special sort of sparkle that's very much the charm of the Italian 60s modern scene! At times, there's almost a hint of sentimentality in his notes – but it's always played with a bit, turned on its head – almost an overseas reworking of familiar American modes from the 50s, pushed into bright new territory by Intra. Trio members include Puppo DeLuca on drums and Palino Salonia on bass – and titles include "Pittura", "Nardis", "Percussion", "Classic Jazz", "John Lewis", "TraBop", "Fiora Blues", and "Tre Tre Tre". One of the earliest albums as a leader from reedman Robin Kenyatta – and a set that's also one of his most compelling too! There's a definitely freer sound here than on some of Robin's smoother sets from the 70s – a vibe that's somewhere near the space of Impulse Records in the post-Coltrane years, and which is right at home on Atlantic's Vortex label subsidiary. A few tracks get surprisingly out, but always with a nice sense of focus, especially in the rhythms – and in addition to Kenyatta's own bold work on alto sax, the album features performances by Roswell Rudd on trombone, Mike Lawrence on trumpet, Walter Booker on bass, Fred Simmons on piano, and Horace Arnold on drums. The tunes have lots of sharp edges – almost Ayler-like at times, but more inside – and titles include "You Know How We Do", "Little Blue Devil", "This Year", and "Until". CD

Atlantic/Collectables, 1973. Used ... $11.99
One of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's last truly fantastic albums – a set that still has all the amazingly messed-up qualities of his best late 60s work – delivered with the honest heart and sense of soul that always make us love his music! The set was recorded for Atlantic in the early 70s, and it's got a wonderful mix of inside and outside playing – a bit more Kirk-unleased overall than some of the more focused experiments of previous records – filled with lots of personality, incredible reed work, and a sound that's spiritual, yet also deeply individual too! Rahsaan plays flute, notes flute, black mystery pipes, E flat sax, and clarinet – and other musicians include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Dick Griffin on trombone, Ron Burton on piano, and Sonny Brown and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – plus a hip string ensemble on some cuts – definitely giving the album a touch of the "Black Classical Music" style that Kirk always claimed was at the root of his work. Side two features the extended "Saxophone Concerto", which has some cool breathing tricks that really let Roland wail – and other tracks include "Celestial Bliss", "One Mind Winter/Summer", and "Ninth Ghost", all of which have a nice dose of spirituality. Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

The title track, beautiful as it is, is so heavily ingrained into rock & roll myth making machine that it's become too easy to overlook how great most of the songs on the album are. It must be the most consistent of John's LPs post-Beatles, and it's just about as essential as they come. Dreamy sunshine pop from the great Mama Cass! Forget her silly name and looks, forget the fact that she died an early stupid death, forget all the records she made with The Mamas & The Papas – Cass Elliott was a wonderful singer who had an approach to a pop song that was beyond compare. She was sugar sweet, but with a sad (slightly stoned?) dark edge that created a wonderful tension in her work – at once as sunny as the summer beaches in Santa Monica, at once as bitter as the gnawing rot that was eating Los Angeles away from the inside. Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $26.99 29.98
An early moment of genius from the legendary Lee Perry – and a set that uses Django imagery from Italian westerns to serve up a "bad boy" version of Jamaican music for the late 60s! Even at this early point, the sounds are mindblowing – rocksteady brought through a really weird sort of filter – so that lots of familiar instruments are turned inside out, and used to create these incredibly far-out sounds – especially the keyboards, which get really weird tunings and timings – and the reed passages, which sometimes have surprisingly exotic touches. Production is a big part of this approach, yet is surprisingly understated too – especially in comparison to later Perry productions – and titles include "Cold Sweat", "Live Injection", "Ten To Twelve", "One Punch", "Touch Of Fire", "Night Doctor", and the classic "Man From MI5". Black Lion/Muzak (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $24.99
A pair of rare late albums from Bud Powell – back to back in a single set! Strictly Confidential is a really unusual set of recordings from pianist Bud Powell – tracks recorded in his overseas home, solo – a setting that puts the keyboard magic of Powell in a similar sound to that of Art Tatum, who'd recorded in such a way the decade before! At some level, these might be the most compelling recordings that Bud made at the time – as there's an intimacy that's wonderful, and an inherent swing that makes you realize how much Powell was always driving the group – even when he was working with top-shelf drummers and bassists. Plus, the solo mode maybe also opens up a current of humanity past the Bud's skills on the keys – which makes the whole record all that much more powerful. Titles include "Deep Night", "Strictly Confidental", "Wahoo", "Deep Inside", "My Devotion", "Conception", and "Ruby My Dear". Essen Jazz Festival All Stars is a great recording from the 1960 Essen Jazz Festival in Germany – one that has bassist Oscar Pettiford playing with Bud Powell and drummer Kenny Clarke (all of whom were living abroad at the time), and being joined by Coleman Hawkins on a few tracks. On the trio sides, although Powell's strong piano is out front, Pettiford still gets a lot of room to solo in warm round swells. The Hawk sides are our favorites, though, because we love the great tenor player at this point in his career, when he was playing in a way that was deceptively easy, but which was filled with all of these incredible surprises. The tracks on this LP are no exception, and the Hawk flies high high high on "All The Things You Are", "Yesterdays", and "Stuffy". CD

Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! Two rare soundtracks by Terry Riley – unsung examples of his musical genius during one of the the most fruitful periods in his career! Les Yeux Fermes features two very long tracks – each over 18 minutes long, and spun out with a spare, minimal groove that's very much in Riley's Rainbow In Curved Air mode. "Journey From The Death Of A Friend" is especially nice – with extended electric piano parts that flow, dip, and turn wonderfully. And "Happy Ending" builds a bit more slowly – with droning reed parts that almost have an Eastern feel, and remind us at times of something we might hear on Impulse Records! The score for Lifespan features shorter songs throughout – still often quite minimal, with instrumentation that includes organ, tabla, and a bit of electronics – played in a wonderfully spare mode, but always with an inherently rhythmic groove that stretches out in these beautiful patterns in sound. A much-needed full length set from RSL – a trio who've grabbed plenty of attention with their initial singles, but who sound even better on an extended session! The group's got some instrumentation that's very much after our hearts – Fender Rhodes, organ, and theremin – all used together in a warm wash of sound that's matched with some pretty intriguing rhythms! And although RSL first came to prominence through their dancefloor work, the overall feel of the album is much more spacious – strongly concerned with soundshapes and tone, and often featuring some acoustic Latin elements sliding through the mix alongside vocals from guest singers Julie Gordon and Susana Montero. Titles include "The Mast", "Star", "Cae La Lluvia", "Inside Looking Out", "Parga Wine", "Wesley Music", "The Plunge", and "The Magic Of Spain". CD

Magic Touch/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... $18.99
A beautifully done look at the music of Harvey Scales – a damn funky cat from the Milwaukee scene, finally getting his due! The package is overflowing with groovers – hard funky 45 cuts that Scales recorded for the Magic Touch label – mostly in the late 60s and start of the 70s – wrapped up here in a lavish booklet that's filled with well-researched notes, and vintage photos – a set that really sets a whole new standard for the Tuff City label! Scales' groove is one that we've always loved on 45 – a dancefloor-directed version of soul that falls somewhere in a space between Archie Bell & The Drells and Dyke & The Blazers – but with a heavier sound overall. Yet having all these cuts together in one place seems to give them even more intensity than before – a powerhouse package of 20 rare tracks that run the gamut from upbeat soul to heavy funk to a few early disco numbers as well. Titles include "Love-It is", "Broadway Freeze", "Get Down", "The Yolk", "The Funky Yolk", "Get Down 1970", "Funky Football", "Trying To Survive", "Bump Your Thang", "Groove On Sexy Lady", "Rock The World", "Welcome Home", "The Sound Of Soul", "Too Good To Be True", and "Love Is A Gas". Beautifully done package – with an almost Numero-like feel inside the booklet! CD

SearchersSearchers – A & B Sides 1963 to 1967 ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
The first-ever full collection of all the groovy singles The Searchers recorded for the Pye Records label in the 60s – a 32 track set that includes both the a and b-side of every 7" release for the label! The Searchers were one of the leading lights of the early British invasion – a group who could harmonize as well as The Beatles, and who had a similar knack for turning out catchy tunes that packed plenty of punch, and which were a nicely stripped-down contrast to some of the more overblown production of American pop of the time! In addition to penning their own tunes, the group often covered work by American artists – taking US tunes and giving them a Brit Invasion flavor in a really great way – thanks to a lean sound, and lots of well-tuned guitar lines! Titles include "Western Union", "Second Hand Dealer", "Crazy Dreams", "This Feeling Inside", "I Pretend I'm With You", "Saturday Night Out", "When You Walk In The Room", "Sugar & Spice", "It's All Been A Dream", "Saints & Searchers", "I'm Never Coming Back", "Too Many Miles", and "Lovers". Jcopy (Japan), 2016. New Copy ... $32.99
One of the coolest books on turntable culture we've ever seen – a really lovely book that features dozens and dozens of Japanese portable turntables – each laid out with lots of photos, model information, and listing of the features too! The book is similar to some of the Japanese discographies on the market – but it's got a special focus on that nation's long legacy of ultra-cool portable record players – featured here in models from the postwar years to the present, each one groovier than the next! There's lots more text in the book in Japanese, but there's plenty to enjoy if you can't read the language – as the book is very visual overall, and even has a section in back of special players that handle unusual formats and special records too. Book is 240 pages, full color, and looks as groovy on the inside as it does on the outside! Book

Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $24.99
Brilliant early work by saxophonist John Tchicai – recorded in Denmark with a larger ensemble, in the years of his European exile after the dissolution of the New York Contemporary Five. Players include Karsten Vogel on alto and percussion, Max Bruel on baritone and piano, and Hugh Steinmetz on trumpet – and the tracks are a mixture of Dutch free jazz and some of the more contemplative scoring of Tchicai's earlier work – but always handled with that special sort of quality that makes Tchicai's work stand out so much, and which makes experiments like this such an important precursor to spiritual jazz projects in the 70s! Tracks ring out with a majesty and power that Tchicai rarely had in his later work – and titles include "Kirsten", "Orga Fleur Super Asam", "Lilanto Del Indio", and "Inside Thule". CD

Bethlehem, 1956. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... $19.99
One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess – done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess – but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes. Plus, the other artists on the set really keep things interesting – as the collection features vocal performances by Johnny Hartman, Frank Rosolino, Betty Roche, Bob Dorough, and Sallie Blair. Plus, the whole thing's presented as Gershwin wrote it – complete with narration by Al Jazzbo Collins, and a number of strong instrumental passages. Music is performed by groups led by Russ Garcia, Duke Ellington, Pat Moran, and Stan Levy – and players are an array of the best of both the New York and LA scenes at the time! LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1968. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.98
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! This great 2LP package features loads of sweet extra bits – including "I Heard Her Call My Name (alternate)", "Hey Mr Rain (version one)", "Temptation Inside Your Heart (original mix)", "Stephanie Says (orig mix)", "Beginning To See The Light (early version)", "Hey Mr Rain (version two)", and "Guess I'm Falling In Love (instrumental)". Leon WareMoonride ... CD
Stax, 2008. Used ... $5.99
New material from one of our favorite soul artists ever – a laidback set of mellow soul tunes that's pure Leon Ware all the way through! The style is almost a contemporary update of Ware's classic Musical Massage for Motown in the 70s – a slinky, sensuous set of tracks, delivered in a space that's far from cliches that can sometimes hold back this sort of music – very firmly in the hands of one of its true originators, still going strong after all these years! The professional placement of the record is a nice contrast to some of Leon's more home-made efforts of recent years – and although things are tight, they're never commercially slick – just smooth, mellow, and flowing with that amazing Ware-styled sound. Titles include "Just Take Your Time", "Loceans", "Hold Tight", "I Never Loved So Much", "A Whisper Away", "To Serve You", "Soon", "Urban Nights", and "From Inside", which features guest keys by Amp Fiddler! Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A tremendous testament to one of the greatest soul groups of the 70s – one with a legacy that goes far beyond the music in this set, but which is really captured here during the golden years of The Whispers on record! The group has roots that start in the vocal group underground of the late 50s and 60s – and spent most of that second decade perfecting their harmonies and vocal interplay – to a point where they emerged in the early 70s with real hit-making power, thanks to their effortless interpretation of mellow tracks and ballads! Yet the group were not without a groove – and as the decade moved on, they also proved to be equally great at clubbier tracks too – able to pick up the pace while still delivering meaningful lyrics, a quality that really set them apart from so many others at the time. As the 80s move in, the group continue to grow and develop their sound – staying sophisticated, but down to earth too – at a level that maybe gave The Whispers a longer run of all-great records than so many artists of their generation. This well-done package does a wonderful job of picking out all the best cuts from the long run of recordings covered inside – 63 tracks that provide a perfect place to start, if you're just getting into the group – and which together will offer you up a fantastic package if you're a longtime fan. Numero, Late 60s. Used ... $14.99
That's a sweet image on the cover – and the grooves inside are equally dynamic too – a really wonderful collection that's easily one of the most compelling in Numero's Eccentric Soul series! The work here all hails from the tiny San Antonio scene of the late 60s – but much of the music has a sound that's way different than you might expect from Texas soul – often with great harmonies that recall the best of the east coast groups of the time, and occasionally with a few brown-eyed touches that echo the style of East LA! There's a wonderfully heartbreaking feel to many of these tracks – and the set's heavy focus on mellower numbers is totally great – and gives the whole thing a wonderful late nite sort of vibe that's usually quite hard to find in compilations like this. As usual, Numero's done a great job with the notes and history of the label – but the music alone is more than enough – a heady brew of cuts that include "Little Girl Blue" and "Try Loving Me" by The Webs, "I Gotta Know" by Tonettes, "Give Your Love To Me" and "Ain't No Big Thing" by Little Jr Jesse & The Tear Drops, "Cry & Wonder Why" by Doc & Sal, "Must Be Alright" and "Hey It's Love" by The Commands, "She's Gotta Have Soul" by Bobby Blackmon & The Soul Express, and "I Can't Take No More" by Willie Cooper & The Webs. That's the great Cheap Trick on the cover – an image that gives you a very good idea of what you'll find inside – the kind of cool, catchy tunes that group mastered in the 70s – served up here by a really surprising range of artists from later years too! The "power pop" here is the key – as tunes are filled with hooks, and could certainly hit the charts – but also lie in that special space between punk, new wave, and early indie modes – heard here on cuts that run for a lot longer than the best-known power pop years of the late 70s and early 80s. The territory's a nice change from the usual Ace Records mode – and the set features 24 tracks that include "The Popular Girl" by Martin Newell, "I Need You" by The Wonders, "Whatever Happened To Fun" by Candy, "It's You Tonight" by The Flashcubes, "Foolish" by DM3, "Mary Anne" by Marshall Crenshaw, "Modern Man" by 4 Out Of 5 Doctors, "Winter In The Hamptons" by Josh Rouse, "I Wanna Be A Teen Again" by Tom Foolery, "Rocket O Love" by The Knack, "Never To Come Again" by Brad Jones, "Had To Make You Mine" by Cheap Trick, "Storybook" by The Blow Pops, and "Hearts In Her Eyes" by The Records. Ed Bruce is a cat that most folks know from his work as an actor, or his 70s country recordings – but he got his start way before that, as you'll hear on these wonderful cuts from the late 50s and early 60s – including a host of unissued material from the Sun Records archives, and some pretty obscure singles for the Wand Records label too! There's a nice shift going on in the space of these recordings – early work that has the unbridled rawness of the Sun rockabilly years, moving into some of the more careful phrasing that would mark Ed's later hits – but still with a nice edge at the core – perfect for the deep blueness that makes the Wand singles so great. The package is as great on the inside as it is on the out – lots of excellent Bear Family notes and photos – and the set features 30 tracks in all, including "I'm Gonna Have A Party", "See The Big Man Cry", "You Come To Me", "Baby That's Good", "King Of Fools", "Alone With A Broken Heart", "Flight 303", "Spun Gold", "He Gave Her To Me", "The Greatest Man", "Doll Baby", "Part Of My Life", "Sweet Woman", and "Unbreakable Heart". John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, really setting fire here in a classic live performance from the mid 60s – one of those very long, open-ended concert dates that was arguably even more impressive than some of Coltrane's studio album! The set was recorded in 1965, but not issued until a few years after Coltrane's death – and it's an amazing representation of the bold steps forward that Trane was taking at the time – working with Sanders in a set of very spiritual expressions that run in these out, open ways that are even different from the Coltrane sound of the year before! The group still features McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – often hanging onto modal rhythms at the start, then dropping back once the horns open up – and Don Raphael Garrett plays bass clarinet, bringing a bit of Dolphy flavor to the set. Part of the strength of the record comes from the lineup – a key quintet of like-mined up-and-comers that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – players who definitely know the farther reaches of jazz, yet hang just on the inside here with Joe – providing some amazing accompaniment for his lines on soprano, tenor, and flute. Russell Gunn looks a bit dated on the cover of this set, but the album's got a lot more depth inside than up front – a solidly soulful groove that's a lot tighter than the waistline on Gunn's droopy pants! Most of the set has a focused soul jazz approach – even more so than on some of Russell's more recent albums – making for a great early effort from the trumpeter, who's an East St Louis player with an initial love of hip hop more than jazz. Most of the record's a straight jazz affair, though – played by a great group with John Hicks on piano, Sam Newsome on tenor, Peter Washington on bass, and Cecil Brooks on drums – but one cut actually does feature a bit of rhymes from Chef Word, dropped in with surprising subtlety, especially considering other jazz/hip hop experiments of the generation. Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from The Stark Reality – an obscure group from the early 70s, but one who've really risen to fame over the years – thanks to their groundbreaking ear for new music, and their freewheeling way with a funky groove! This package brings together all the incredible work recorded by the group in the late 60s and early 70s – a mindblowing assortment of funky and fuzzy jazz tracks – almost all of which are graced by the offbeat vibes work of Monty Stark! Stark often adds a bit of distortion into his instrument, which makes for a very tripped-out approach to vibes – one that blends perfectly with the heavy funk of some of the rhythms, and the freaky guitar lines added to most tracks by a young John Abercrombie. Yet at other times, things are very laidback and chilled-out – balanced beautifully from track to track, in a way that illustrates the larger picture the group were always going for in their music. This massive package brings together everything Stark Reality ever recorded – their famous Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album, the Acting Thinking Feeling live performance, the Roller Coaster Ride/1969 album, and lots of rare singles too – more than enough music to please any fan of the group, and blow the minds of anyone who's just getting a first taste. Sugimoto's got an inherently trippy approach to his instrument – but he works here with a nice sense of restraint – often using his wilder sounds to just start out a tune, then falling more into a rhythmic pulse as the rest of the group picks up the pace! The lineup includes tenor, piano (acoustic and electric), bass, and drums – sometimes played with a spacey feel that's almost got a bit of a Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock influence – sometimes a bit more inside, and grooving with the modal impulses of an electric set on MPS. There's a lyrical vibe to the record that's a great reminder of Waldron's roots – his ability to mix gentle moments with darker themes – and a command of the piano that makes it clear that when Mal's playing, he owes nothing to anyone else. Titles include "Mingus Lives", "Tensile Structures", "Here There & Everywhere", and "Mingus Lives". CD

✨✧ Johnny Guitar WatsonAin't That A Bitch ... CD
Sequel (UK), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album that Johnny Watson cut during his DJM years – a totally tight, totally soulful set that avoids any fake funk cliches! The record's got some wonderful trippy numbers – cut in that slow g-funky mode that was Johnny's huge legacy to the west coast scene – best of these is the classic "Superman Lover", a great little cut with a very catchy hook, and just the right dose of humor. But you'll also catch the same vibe on "I Want To Ta Ta You Baby", "Ain't That A Bitch", and "I Need It". Johnny's sitting on the cover, surrounded by ladies and a dog – and the back cover says "My apologies to Freddie, my guitar, for forgetting to bring him to the photo session." What a guy! CD

✨✧ VariousComplete Motown Singles Volume 11A – 1971 (limited edition 5CD set) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1971. Used 5 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The biggest year so far for Motown singles – so massive, this series had to divide it up into 2 volumes! This first half covers the initial 1971 releases from Motown – music issued up through June of that year, marking another momentous season for the label – one that has them getting even hipper and more righteous than before! That change is clearly marked by the inclusion of Marvin Gaye's classic 45 "What's Going On"/"God Is Love" on the inside front cover – and it's followed through beautifully by a set of work that's easily some of the most mature to come out on Motown – tunes that are filled with uplifting vocals, dynamic arrangements, and production that's so sophisticated, it makes the big hits of previous years seem like simple pop singles. These crucial 6 months are covered by 5 CDs that feature 119 tracks in all – packaged as beautifully as previous volumes, with full color artwork inside a hardcover package that's better than taking a trip to any sort of music Hall Of Fame. Artists include Eddie Kendricks, Marvin Gaye, Gordon Staples, Tom Clay, The Undisputed Truth, Hearts Of Stone, Jackson 5, Ken Christie & The Sunday People, The Crusaders, Bill Cosby, The Stylists, Arthur Adams, Hugh Masekela, Letta Mbulu, David Ruffin, Brass Monkey, Joe Hinton, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Kiki Dee, Chuck Jackson, and many others. What a year – and what a package! CD
