✨✧ BadbadnotgoodIV (with download) ... LP
Innovative Leisure, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Badbadnotgood have always been pretty damn great, actually – and never better than on album IV – a remarkable step forward for the group! As ever, they take inspiration from some of the best prog, jazz, funk (and proggy jazz funk...they blend) of the 70s and beyond, but weave it into fairly distinctive and genuinely fun modern sound. It's built to last, too –we're sure be able to come back to their work in a couple decades and it'll still work! IV finds them with the confidence to trade in some fairly subtle, smoothed out moments between to more boisterous ones, and they're more dexterous in the instrumentation – especially in the horns, keys and percussion – but some great vibes, strings, flute and more when the mood calls. Includes the great vocal track "Time Moves Slow" with Sam Herring of Future Islands, "And That, Too", "Lavender", "IV", "Chompy's Paradise", "Structure No. 3", "Cashmere", "Hyssops Of Love" and more. ✨✧ Harriet BrownMall Of Fortune ... CD
Innovative Leisure, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away". Evan GeesmanNewagesewage (with bonus download) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2020. New Copy ... $6.99 21.98
The cover and title might seem a bit trashy, but the music's much richer than they lead you to expect – a sensitively-crafted batch of instrumentals and vocal numbers that seem to tie together a contemporary Cali soul aesthetic with traces of the 80s underground from overseas! Some tunes almost feel as if cold wave elements have been warmed up to sunnier soul – but the vocals are always understated and somewhat processed – maybe somewhere in the Stones Throw or Innovative Leisure mode – but also a lot more personal and sensitive at times. Titles include "Testify", "Pari", "Roseberg", "Buppy", "English", "Maybeness", "Turmeric", and "Symmetry". LP, Vinyl record album
