Bilal AbdurahmanInnovative Rhythmic & Tonal Textures ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A beautiful record – and one that definitely lives up to the "innovative" name in the title! The set's a bit more complex, and more jazz-based than some of the other Folkways albums from Bilal Abdurahman – still very much in the spare modes of his other records, but also with more of an emphasis on soprano sax and flute, played with these wonderfully lyrical styles – and mixed in with rhythms on woodblock, drums, and even various body parts! There's a kalimba on one number that sounds especially nice – and titles include "Witty Ditty", "Soprano Saxophone Interlude", "Tone Poem Mysterioso", "Counting Rhythms", "Imaginary African Rain Forest", "Shake It Loose", and "Stepping To School So Cool". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Stan KentonInnovations Orchestra ... CD
Capitol/Jazz Heritage, Early 50s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant collection of work from Stan Kenton – recordings from his Innovations Orchestra, the groundbreaking group from the years 1950 and 1951, which featured players that include Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, and Laurindo Almeida! The work features Kenton in some of his most modern modes – taking the broad range of colors and tones he first started forging in the late 40s, and fusing them onto some modern jazz ideals of the early 50s. The result is some incredible music that still sounds extremely fresh today – tracks that still have a swinging rhythm and jazz-based solos, but which also have a keen ear towards the 20th Century Classical Music of mid century. Titles include "Solitaire", "Soliloquy", "June Christy", "Shelly Manne", "House Of Strings", "Cello-logy", "Art Pepper", "Halls Of Brass", "In Veradero", "Blues In Riff", and "Coop's Solo". 2CDs, great notes, and 30 tracks in all! Badbadnotgood feat Little DragonTried (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Innovative Leisure, 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $8.99 9.99
A great little number from Badbadnotgood with Little Dragon – a pretty spot on synthesis of the versatile, jazz-inspired groove of the former and moody electronic soul of the latter, especially singer Yukimi Nagano! "Tried" doesn't have to try too hard to pull is from the beginning, with it's light & airy guitar and keys, funky bassline and Yukimi's soulful vocal. It comes from Badbadnotgood's IV sessions and kind of stunning that it didn't make the record! Includes the vocal & instrumental. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Helmut Brandt ComboBerlin Calling ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Mid 50s. Used ... $6.99
Bold bass saxophone sounds from the overlooked Helmut Brand – a German player of the postwar years, and one with a sense of tone and texture to rival that of Gerry Mulligan at his west coast best! The work here is all previously unreleased, but shows Brand as one of the key reed innovators of the German scene at the time – right up there with the experiments of Hans Koller, especially in the way that Helmut can work fresh tones in with a strong sense of soul and swing! Many of these cuts feature trumpeter Conny Jackel joining in the frontline – folding his horn in with Brand's to create a cool wash of color – and a few other numbers feature Helmut alone as the lead soloist in a quartet, one with Roland Kovac on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include "Bami", "Nordlicht", "Yesterdays", "Salute To Lars Gullin", "Love For Sale", "Berlin Calling", and "Sum". CD

Innovative Leisure, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away". Warner/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The era that catapulted cult heroes Devo into pop culture history – with bubblier synths, catchier hooks, and crazier multimedia shenanigans than ever before from these pioneers of the video era – and time capsule pop angle aside, it's still one of the best and most innovate albums of its time! It's pretty hard to imagine the early 80s without Devo, but the group and this record is just as amazing decades later, since there was never anyone else like them! Includes "Girl U Want", "It's Not Right", "Whip It", "Freedom Of Coice", "Cold War", "Don't You Know", "Gates Of Steel" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

DevoNew Traditionalists (colored vinyl pressing – with poster) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
A great one from Devo – capping off their classic era when they could hardly do wrong! By 1981, the gentlemen Devo had been up to their collective arse in irony since the early 70s, and having made a sizable fortune for the Brothers' Warner with the ultra-ironic "Whip It" the previous year, they took a sharp right turn into cranky sincerity. They did so on a wave of new wave synth funk, of course, resulting in the all-time great singles "Beautiful World", "Through Being Cool" and a few more gems. Mtv and a lot of the fans couldn't understand why 5 guys with plastic hair and outerspace uniforms were no longer playing it for laughs and thus killed the prospect of Devo as hitmakers for the rest of the decade! A worthy effort from one of the most innovative pop groups ever! Other tracks include "Pity You", "Soft Things","Going Under", "Race Of Doom", "Love Without Anger" and "Enough Said". Fontana, 1964. Used ... $4.99
A fitting title for a great album – Eric Dolphy's last live recording, performed on June 2, 1964, with a trio of youngsters that included two of the greatest names in European avant garde jazz – Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink! The sound is jagged and a bit free – showing the way towards even greater innovations that might have marked Dolphy's 60s years, had he not been taken from us so quickly! The album's filled with beautiful Dolphy playing in his late mode – on alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and tracks include "The Madrig Speaks, The Panther Walks", "Miss Ann", and "Hypochristmutreefuz". Dudley PerkinsA Lil' Light ... CD
Stones Throw, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A nice, moody hip hop/funk album from one of the deepest talents on the Stones Throw roster! Dudley came to underground hip hop fame as Declaime, but really stepped forward as a durable, innovative artist with the Dudley Perkins singles that have dropped thus far – and A Lil Light soundly delivers on that promise. It's all about mood – this may be the murkiest, most muddily funky thing Madlib has ever produced, with crackly, hissing beats, bass and samples. Dudley's vocals are about as far from the crooning NuSoul sound as you can get. He's grooves along with an improvised feel to the lyrics, loosely scatting in both a rolling deep bass and a soulful, nearly crying falsetto. The sound falls somewhere between the denser parts of D'Angelo's Voodoo and the spacier aspects of 70s soul and funk. Totally unique and satisfying – would you expect any less of Stones Throw? Tracks include "Money", the Sun Ra-inspired "Gotta Go", "You Really Know Me?", "Washedbrainsyndrome", "Flowers", "Just Think", "Yo' Soul", "Momma", "Lil' Black Boy" and more. CD

El Michels AffairEnter The 37th Chamber ... LP
Fat Beats, 2009. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Cinematic funky soul instrumentals from the El Michels Affair – the loose NYC collective's long awaited full length nod to the Wu Tang Clan! The crew brings their tried and true slow rolling and dirty funk to their interpretations of classic Wu Tang tracks, with some straight up beautiful sophisticated soul backdrops, too, and Leon & the crew pull it all off masterfully! The RZA's sonic stamp is too innovative and idiosyncratic for a simple live band rehash, and the group is wise to use the famous crackling sample built soundscapes to craft both an homage to the Wu Tang's best material, as well as the 70s funk, soul and cinema sounds that informed them in the first place. A few of the tracks first blew our minds as funky 45s, and this full formed set was worth the wait – from the moody organ funk of "Can It All Be So Simple", the funky drummer rhythms of "Uzi (Pinky Ring)", the string accented moods of "Heaven And Hell", the brass band and children's chorus cover of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and lots more! Other tracks include "Glaciers Of Ice", "Incarcerated Scarfaces", "Bring Da Ruckus" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

The cover and title might seem a bit trashy, but the music's much richer than they lead you to expect – a sensitively-crafted batch of instrumentals and vocal numbers that seem to tie together a contemporary Cali soul aesthetic with traces of the 80s underground from overseas! Some tunes almost feel as if cold wave elements have been warmed up to sunnier soul – but the vocals are always understated and somewhat processed – maybe somewhere in the Stones Throw or Innovative Leisure mode – but also a lot more personal and sensitive at times. Bruce HaackFarad Bruce Haack – The Electric Voice ... CD
Stones Throw, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $4.99
Amazing electric grooves from synth innovator Bruce Haack – whose pioneering use of analog synths and vocoder vocals in the service of great, if far out songcraft was pretty much unrivaled in the 70s and into the early 80s – the period in which this excellent compilation on Stones Throw highlights! Haack's earlier successes were children's music in the 60s, and one of the coolest aspects of his 70s recordings was how that somewhat bright-eyed and innocent sing-song-y approached moved into more surrealist, weirder realms on albums like Electric Lucifer, that album's lesser known, still quite brilliant sequel, and albums like Haackula and Bite. Choice cuts from those albums as well as rare singles are rounded up for Stones Throw's impeccably curated overview. The electric voice and synth errata brings an otherworldly vibe to catchy songs – and Haack's use of the vocoder was followed by so many others who would become household names, from Kraftwerk to Pink Floyd. Amazing stuff! 16 tracks in all: "Electric To Me Turn", "Incantation", "Rain Of Earth", "Ancient Mariner", "Man Kind", "Rita", "Lie Back", "Snow Job"m "The King", "Party Machine" and more. CD

Not just a flute session from Yusef Lateef – as the set's a record with plenty of saxophone as well as the instrument named in the title! Yusef's mixing his bag nicely for this mid 60s classic – working through tunes that are a mixture of soulful hardbop and eastern exoticism – a shift that's marked by Lateef's changing reed work on tenor, flute, and oboe! The group's a hip quartet with players from Lateef's Detroit scene – the always-great Hugh Lawson on piano, plus Herman Wright on bass, and a young Roy Brooks on drums – all working with Lateef in a sound that almost points the way towards some of the innovations in 70s soul jazz, and which has surprisingly righteous touches that you wouldn't expect from such a simple package! Probably the most hyped hip hop album by rock critics of the last decade – but don't hold that against Stankonia, because these ghetto grooves from planet P-Funk were exactly what world needed in 2000! The millenium blowout party jam feel throughout is surely a nice change of pace from all the doom and gloom out there, but they still manage to spit out enough reality to keep things feeling true – particularly in the playful battle of the sexes showdowns. Annette PeacockI'm The One (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Future Days, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $43.99
One of the best albums by offbeat jazz singer Annette Peacock – one with a loose, very innovative vibe in arrangements – with some pretty darn cool electronics! Annette not only has a strong voice, she's fearlessly creative in her use of it! On this album, her vocals are often processed through the electronics, in a way that's a good couple decades ahead of the curve, but never in a way that comes even close to denigrating her strength as a singer. At times, she's screaming like Betty Davis in a funky mode, at others she's getting raw and dirty in a Tom Waits vein, and at others she presages 80s club oddities like Klaus Nomi! Somehow these divergent modes work together, making this one of the most unique and trailblazing albums of Annette's career! Includes the funky break track "Pony", a pretty compelling number, plus "I'm The One", "Been & Gone", "Love Me Tender", "Blood", "One Way", "Gesture Without Plot", "Did You Hear Me Mommy?" and "7 Days". Vicktor's got a voice that would be wonderful in a standard setting – inflected with his Nigerian roots, and clear love of American soul music – but he also gives himself a very unconventional backdrop for his music – using these beautiful bursts of electronic elements that sparkle and blossom in very unusual ways, as well as song structures that are equally unique, and which only heighten the very personal approach of his music! TrickyVulnerable ... CD
Sanctuary, 2003. Used ... $3.99
Tricky's making strong music again! In the minds of a lot of fans, Tricky stepped over big time in the last half of the 90's and first couple of '00s. With a couple exceptions, the soundscapes he kept dropping grew so self-indulgently dark and gritty, that his work became nearly unlistenable. Just when we were starting to forget his pedigree as one of the most innovative figures in electronic music and one of the architects of trip hop, here he is with his best album in nearly a decade! Vulnerable is a self-conscious attempt at a real pop record, but his inherently dark edges and shrapnel-infected vocals accompanying Costanza's sweet girly lead has the same feel that made Maxinquaye such a great album. Tricky's handling of the keys, drums and programming are designed to head straight out with the hooks – keeping the lengthy noise passages and indulgent wankery that plagues his lesser stuff on the floor. The choice of material, including covers of "Dear God" and "The Love Cats" in pert near perfect. All is forgiven, Tricky! Other tracks include "Stay", "Antimatter", "Ice Pick", "Car Crash", "Hollow" and "Moody". This is an enhanced CD, with bonus film and video footage. CD

Barry WhiteMan Is Back! ... CD
A&M (Japan), 1989. Used ... $6.99
The title's got it right – because the Man is definitely back, although in a completely different way than before! Barry White works here in a setting that's nice and lean – those soul changes that came about during them more electric 80s years, but also given that start-of-90s spin that had a deeper sense of soul returning to the music – thanks to innovations by Soul II Soul, Terry Riley, and other groundbreaking talents! There's a vibe that definitely resonates with the younger R&B generation of the time – funky, but in a completely different way than 70s Barry White – and the singer's vocals fit tremendously well amidst the very catchy grooves. Tracks include "Super Lover", "Don't Let Go", "Love's Interlude/Good Night My Love", "I Wanna Do It Good To Ya", "It's Getting Harder All The Time", and "Responsible". CD

Bill WithersJustments ... LP
Sussex, 1974. Very Good ... $14.99
A massive 70s album from the great Bill Withers – one that's sometimes overlooked next to his huge crossover records that preceded it – but which is every bit as wonderful! Withers is still on Sussex Records, and still has that completely unique approach that made him a soul genre unto himself – a fantastic voice, a nicely acoustic core, and this sense of flow that's completely magnetic – augmented here with maybe a bit more funk than before, and some great use of keyboards too! The material has a conversational, wise and world weary tone that's brilliantly effective and more intimate than Bill's bigger hits of the day – and there's also some subtly innovative parts to the production that are really moving, from the harp accented piano on "Stories" and the funky percussion flavored rambler of a closing number "Railroad Man". Other tracks include "You", "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh", "Heartbreak Road", "Green Grass", "Ruby Lee", "Can We Pretend", "Liza", and "Make A Smile For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Kourosh YaghmaeiBack From The Brink – Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran – 1973 to 1979 (3LP set) ... LP
Now Again, 1970s. Sealed 3LP Gatefold ... $46.99
Melodic psychedelia from 70s Iran – an incredible full scale anthology of recordings by guitarist and vocalist Kourosh Yaghmaei from the pre-revolution years – and an absolute treasure! Kouroush often recorded with his brothers – Kourosh singing lead and playing guitars or bass – with Kamran Yaghmaei on guitars and backing vocals and Kambiz Yaghmaei on keys and backing vocals. Other players contribute drums, bass and occasional additional elements – harmonica or horns on few tracks. The sound is a really wonderful amalgam of western garage, psych and strains of funk with native Iranian modes and tempos. The songs here sink in on an emotional level without us knowing a word of the language – the passionate vocals work wonderfully in that regard – but musically, it's innovative stuff that's nicely tripped out and heavily rhythmic, without compromising the melodic sensibility. The heavy duty 3LP set features 21 tracks in all – in a sweet 6 panel gatefold with a 24 page booklet – featuring extensive notes and photos, with Kourosh's story told in autobiographical detail. Like other recent Now Again packages, it's really beautifully done! Titles include "Gol E Yakh", "Dar Enteha", "Paiz", "Leila", "Del Dareh Pir Misheh", "Shirin Joon", "Ghazal", "Mosafere Shahre Baran", "Saghe", "Niyayesh", "Saraabe Toe", "Baroona", "Khaar", Bachehaye Khoobe Koocheh" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Tri-fold edition – still sealed, with hype sticker!)

✨✧ BadbadnotgoodIV (with download) ... LP
Innovative Leisure, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Badbadnotgood have always been pretty damn great, actually – and never better than on album IV – a remarkable step forward for the group! As ever, they take inspiration from some of the best prog, jazz, funk (and proggy jazz funk...they blend) of the 70s and beyond, but weave it into fairly distinctive and genuinely fun modern sound. It's built to last, too –we're sure be able to come back to their work in a couple decades and it'll still work! IV finds them with the confidence to trade in some fairly subtle, smoothed out moments between to more boisterous ones, and they're more dexterous in the instrumentation – especially in the horns, keys and percussion – but some great vibes, strings, flute and more when the mood calls. Includes the great vocal track "Time Moves Slow" with Sam Herring of Future Islands, "And That, Too", "Lavender", "IV", "Chompy's Paradise", "Structure No. 3", "Cashmere", "Hyssops Of Love" and more. Def Jam, 1986. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The game changing Def Jam classic – and possibly the greatest album by the Beastie Boys – even though they'd grow up a whole lot after this! Profane party anthems galore, and the Beasties would distance themselves from much of the attitude of this album, making their career arc from stoopid (as opposed to stupid) to thoughtful and playful innovators one of the more interesting artistic evolutions of their generation for sure. With all the killer cuts: "Rhymin & Stealin", "The New Style", "Girls", "Fight For Your Right To Party", "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", "Paul Revere", "Hold It Now Hit It", "She's Crafty", and more. ✨✧ Flaming LipsEmbryonic (2CD & DVD) ... CD
Warner, 2009. Used 2CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late masterpiece from the Flaming Lips – one of their most unique and uncompromising records since they became leftfield hitmakers – and a record that works best as a whole! Embryonic is a grower, and the first record since The Soft Bulletin which, to our ears anyway, doesn't seem to have any illusions of a crossover ready single in the lineup. It's really a space rock record with fuzzy guitars and echoing noisiness, and a confident step out of "Do You Realize?" style speaks-to-everyone art pop, and into more of a dissonant, messy sound. It's a real thrill for us to see a longtime favorite not only get over into the mainstream consciousness and stay there for years, but to continue to challenge and innovate while they're hanging out there. Titles include "Convinced Of The Hex", "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine", "Evil", "Aquarius Sabotage", "See The Leaves", "Your Bats", "Powerless", "Scorpio Sword", "Watching The Planets" and more. ✨✧ Ed BickertEd Bickert ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from Candian guitarist Ed Bickert – a record that's filled with amazing tones and colors, and which sparkles brightly from the very first note! The date's a trio outing – with Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums – but Bickert's playing gives the whole thing a quality that's very different than any sort of traditional jazz guitar set like this – thanks to a style that shows a knowledge of 70s innovators like Pat Martino and John Abercrombie, but a sense of soul that keeps the whole thing nice and solid – in a very classic way. The set's got an airy feel, but is deeply grounded too – and at times, Bickert almost seems to echo the unique phrasing of his Canadian contemporary Sonny Greenwich. Titles include "Where Are You", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and "Manha De Carnaval". CD

✨✧ Luiz Bonfa/Eumir DeodatoGentle Rain ... LP
Mercury, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A dreamy little soundtrack to this lesser-known film – but a real bossa classic from the 60s, featuring original tunes by Luiz Bonfa and orchestrations by Deodato! The sound of the set is really wonderful – sometimes fragile, sometimes full – with a juxtaposition that beautifully links American soundtrack modes of the 60s and some of the bossa innovations associated with Bonfa and Deodato. Deodato's orchestrations are possibly the best side of the set – often light and airy with a similar approach to his Os Gatos work – but served up here in shorter snippets that allow a lot of variation on color and theme throughout the record. Album includes classic readings of "The Gentle Rain", "O Ganso", and "Non Stop To Brazil" – plus the tracks "Judy's Story", "Please Help Me One More Time", "Copa Beach", "It's Tempting", "Saturday In Rio", and "Across A Table". ✨✧ Miles DavisMan With The Horn ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A nice little later album from Miles Davis – one that still has some sharp edges and interesting moments that refine the earlier electric sound of the 70s! Teo Macero's still producing here, and he gives the record a focus that really brings the best sound out of the tunes – and although there's not as much noise, funk, or raw energy as before, there's still a shimmeringly modern style that's quite different from most other electric jazz of the time – proof that Davis was still an innovator even in these years! Other instrumentation includes electric piano, guitar, and soprano sax – and titles include "Fat Time", "Aida", "The Man With The Horn", "Ursula", and "Back Seat Betty". LP, Vinyl record album

Norton/Kicks, 2011. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
The Science Fiction Poetry of Sun Ra – complete and unabidged – in a great, kinda old school hip pocket paperback-styled tome from Kicks Books! As revered as Sun Ra is, was, and will forever be as one of the great avant garde bandleaders and all around musical innovators of the 20th Century, his work as an Afro-futurist poet is overlooked. This book aims to change that, but not in a precious way at all. It's sort of presented as a fun little pulp paperback. Includes a nice forward by Amiri Baraka and an intro by science fiction historian Bhob Stewart, who does a terrific job of detailing Ra's 60s poetry and his quite genuine relevence in that realm! The dark, innovative, head crushing classic by Cannibal Ox – perhaps the signature LP of fairly brief, but legendary Def Jux era! Vordul and Vast Aire from the Atoms Family crew twist metaphors and create dark visuals of NYC and outer space with ease on one of the most forward thinking hip hop albums in quite some time – produced by El-P, who we thought of at the time as the underrated MC and producer of underground faves Company Flow – long before he broke big with Run The Jewels! Tracks include "Atom" with Alaska and Cryptic from Atoms Fam, the single "Iron Galaxy", "Raspberry Fields", "Straight Off The D.I.C.", "Vein", "The F Word", "Stress Rap", "Battle For Asgard" with LIFE Long and C-Rayz Walz from Stronghold, "Painkillers", "Ridiculoid" with El-P, "Pigeon" and more. 4LP deluxe edition comes with the classic original on 2LPs and the complete instrumentals on 2LPs! A pretty tight little album from Nick Waterhouse – and even though his conga's apparently getting stolen in the cover phot, he's got more than enough of a combo to make up for that loss! The groove here is in a place between vintage soul and garagey rock – maybe garage soul, with Nick's blue-eyed vocals sounding maybe a bit raspier than before – getting tight push from the horn section in the group, but also plenty of great guitar with a sweet 60s twang! Titles include "Man Leaves Town", "Wreck The Rod", "Song For Winners", "I Feel An Urge Coming On", "Black Glass", "Wherever She Goes", and "El Viv". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ OutkastStankonia (psychedelic lady cover) ... CD
LaFace, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dre, Big Boi and Organized Noize continue to innovate, even if they are at the top of the charts – and we can't wait to see where they take it all next! Tracks include "Gasoline Dreams", "So Fresh, So Clean", "Ms. Jackson", "Spaghetti Junction", "I'll Call Before I Come" featuring Gangsta Boo & Eco, "B.O.B.", "Xplosion" featuring B-Real, "We Luv Deez Hoez", "Humble Mumble" featuring Erykah Badu, "Red Velvet", "Gangsta Sh*t", "Toilet Tisha" "Slum Beautiful", and "Stankonia (Stanklove)".
