Tetuzi Akiyama/Nicolas Field /Gregor VidicInterpersonal Subjectivities ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A trio recorded with a great texture of sounds – the guitar of Tetzui Akiyama, the drums of Nicolas Field, and the tenor of Gregor Vidic – the last of which is often blown in this careful, sound-shaping style that's a big change from the usual! Akiyama's guitar is great too – not the louder noise that might be used in an improvisational session like this – and instead a more careful approach to the subtler sonic reaches, with slow-building, soft-glowing elements that are punctuated with bolder moments from Nicolas Field. Titles include "Inner Circle", "Synchronous Ancestor", and "Wandering". CD

VariousGarland Records – Pacific Northwest Stash Box (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Garland/Beat Rocket, Late 60s. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
We're not entirely sure what a "stash box" means in terms of music – but after hearing this very groovy collection, we may well be using it as a term ourselves! The set features rare material recorded for the tiny Garland Records label in Salem, Oregon during the late 60s – but the sound and style is different than other Pacific Northwest material of that decade – often a bit sweeter and sunnier, with elements that resonate more strongly with changes taking place on the LA scene of the mid 60s – including some great harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a way of mixing slight psych touches with romping rhythms – all to to create sounds that are almost a garage equivalent of Sunshine Pop from bigger studios. Most of these tracks were never issued at the time, and even the few that were are pretty darn obscure – making the whole thing a treasure trove of really fresh music – with titles that include "Life Laced Leaf" by Inner Circle, "Maybe Today" by Tim Culbertson, "What Goes Up Must Come Down" by Fatty Twice Together, "Grey Day" by The Wild Side, "Parousia" by Lawe, "We'll Meet Again" by Tyme, "Part Time Love" by Will Logan, "Keep On Looing" by The Ultimate, and "Tears" by The New Dawn. ✨✧ Jacob MillerWho Say Jah No Dread ... LP
Greensleeves, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from the mighty Jacob Miller – material recorded with Augustus Pablo in the years before Miller went onto greater fame in Inner Circle – and with a rootsy vibe that's still extremely powerful all these many years later! Pablo's at the height of his talents here – able to hit just the best righteous modes, but without ever going over the top – at a level that seems completely effortless, and which really empowers the message in Miller's vocals! The set's overflowing with gems – and titles include "Keep On Knocking", "Each One Teach One", "Who Say Jah No Dread", "False Rasta", "Baby I Love You So", and "Girl Named Pat" – plus the dubs "Knocking Version", "Hungry Town Skank", "King Tubby Meet Rockers Uptown", "Jah Dread", "Each One Teach One Version", and "Girl Named Pat Version". ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonHighway One ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wicked post-Blue Note session from Bobby Hutcherson – one that's put together in a different way than his previous work, but still completely sublime throughout! The feel is almost to Hutcherson's earlier work what Woody Shaw's Columbia recordings were to his – tighter, with sharper production – yet still wonderfully soulful and with a strong sense of spirit. Key soloists include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Hubert Laws on flute – and the record also features George Cables on acoustic and electric piano, Cedar Walton on acoustic piano, and Eddie Marshall on drums. Includes the lovely "Sweet Rita Suite", plus "Circle", "Secrets Of Love", and "Bouquet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ John ColtraneJohn Coltrane – The Bethlehem Years (Winner's Circle/Art Blakey Big Band – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem/Jazz Society, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time. The second set of tracks was recorded for a unique big band session led by Art Blakey – featuring a core group with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop Jr, and Wendell Marshall on some tracks – plus a larger lineup on a number of others. The CD brings together a whopping 27 tracks from these sessions, including some great alternate takes – and titles include "Midriff", "Tippin", "The Outer World", "The Kiss Of No Return", "Pristine", and "Oasis" – a previously unreleased track! Atlantic StarrBrilliance ... LP
A&M, 1982. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
The title's certainly right on this one – because Atlantic Starr serve up a really brilliant blend of electro funk and mainstream soul – balanced with that near-perfect sound that made them one of the best groups of their generation! Despite the size of the combo, the sound is relatively lean – a very focused balance of basslines, keyboards, and some tightly snapping 80s groove rhythms – served up with vocals that warmly cascade over the tops of the tunes, but usually take a second seat to the extremely compelling instrumentation. The sound is polished, but never too slick – and the group are a great example of how well soul from this time could sound when done just the right way! Titles include "Love Me Down", "Sexy Dancer", "Circles", "Love Moves", "Your Love Finally Ran Out", and "You're The One". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes printed inner sleeve.)
