✨✧ IncognitoTales From The Beach ... CD
Dome/Heads Up, 2008. Used ... Just Sold Out!
No beach music grooves here – just sublimely soulful work from Incognito – played with the sort of perfection we've come to expect in their albums! The title's a tribute to the sunny grooves heard by Bluey in his youth in Mauritius, and the album was recorded with a similarly warm feel too – given that some of the sessions were done in Italy and Indonesia! Instrumentation is as tight as ever – soulful, jazzy, and never too slick or smooth – and with singers that include Maysa, Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle, and Imaani, the record's got a vocal range that's as great as its instrumental one. Ski Oakenfull and Matt Cooper play a fair bit of keyboards, which warms the tunes up nicely – and titles include "Freedom To Love", "Happy People", "Step Aside", "I've Been Waiting", "When The Sun Comes Down", "Tales From The Beach", "Silence Of My Mind", and "It May Rain Sometime". ✨✧ Incognito100 Degrees & Rising ... CD
Verve/Suonaphone, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mid period work from Bluey and Incognito – perhaps slipping a bit from the freshness of their initial albums, but still sounding a heck of a lot better than most of the groups on the market! Like previous sets, this one has a jazzy finish that's blended with a tight NuSoul vibe – the inspiration for many of today's underground acts, and often not done nearly as well as it is here. Titles include "Time Has Come", "Jacob's Ladder", "Barumba", "I Hear Your Name", "After The Fall", "One Hundred & Rising", and "Good Love". CD

✨✧ IncognitoAdventures In Black Sunshine ... CD
Dome/Narada, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Is it us, or does Incognito just get better and better with each new record? It's been over 2 decades since Bluey first recorded under the Incognito name, but that doesn't mean that he's been sitting on his laurels at all – because this gem of an album has him sounding better than even on some of his classics from years back! The groove is sweetly soulful, with a jazzy undercurrent that hearkens back to the best west coast soul of the 70s – and Bluey's got the group honed to perfection, playing with a razor-sharp edge that keeps the tunes as funky as they are soulful! Vocals are by Maysa and Tony Momrelle – and tracks include "Don't Turn My Love Away", "This Thing Called Love", "The Principles Of Love", "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Close My Eyes", "25th Chapter", and "Mr Jones". Talkin' Loud (UK), 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incognito have done it again! It's been over 10 years since Incognito first hooked up with the Talking Loud label – and that relationship has led to some of the strongest new soul releases of the past decade! For this release, leader/producer Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick has pulled together a number of different singers – who alternate leads on the album's 14 tracks, each vocalizing in a sweetly jazzy mode, perfect for the kind of grooves you'd expect from the group. The album's an all-original batch of tracks – as great as any other they've recorded, and one of their most unified albums in years! Titles include "Stay Mine", "Bring You Down", "Slow Down", "Skin On My Skin", "Worlds Collide", "Got To Know", "Reach Out", "On The Road", and "Down To Earth". CD

✨✧ IncognitoPositivity ... CD
Talkin' Loud/Universal, 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Incognito – perhaps their greatest album ever! By the time of this 1993 release, this Brit funky soul combo was in perfect form – blending together classic modes of jazz funk into a tight modern blend that's lasted a lot longer than anyone might have thought at the time. From the perspective of nearly a decade later, this album glistens like a lost soul jewel – perfectly fitting in between some of our favorite 70s albums, and a few of the better sides from recent years. The vocals are great, the riffing is tight, and the production is smooth and soulful all the way through. Tracks include "Still A Friend Of Mine", "Positivity", "Smiling Faces", "Do Right", "Talkin Loud", and "Thinkin About Tomorrow". CD

✨✧ IncognitoEleven (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Is it only 11 albums so far? Given the number of years Incognito's been grooving our world, we'd have thought it was at least 50 records to date! Yet given the richly collaborative spirit of leader Bluey – and his work with many other groups and projects – added to the always-great sound of any Incognito set, it's clear that the group have had an influence that goes far beyond a straight run of just 11 records. There's always a depth to Incognito's work that few other groups can match – including the countless artists of the Neo Soul generation who've been inspired by their older records, but can never seem to cut a record that's as great as one like this! Of course, part of the strength of the set is Incognito's richly-collaborative spirit – a quality that makes plenty of room here for lead vocals by Maysa Leak, Imaani, and Carleen Anderson – and which benefits strongly from some great keyboard lines by Ski Oakenfull. But as usual, mainman Bluey is the one to thank for the record – because his sense of groove, and love of classic 70s-influenced soul comes through very strongly on all tracks – hitting an on-the-money sound that makes the group, and this latest album, stand head to head with some of the best soul acts of classic years. Another winner from Incognito – not a bit of fluff at all – and a sublime batch of tracks that includes "Jacaranda", "Show Me Love", "We Got Music", "Let The Mystery Be", "Will I Ever Learn", "I'll Get By", "As Long As It's You", and "When Tomorrow Brings You Down". ✨✧ IncognitoTribes, Vibes, & Scribes ... CD
Verve/Talkin' Loud, 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning little set from Incognito – the group's first full album on Talkin Loud records, and a set that's head and shoulders above their earlier jazz funk from the 80s! The sound here has a real "instant classic" quality – not just because it's dripping with the best references from the jazzier side of 70s soul (think Fantasy Records at its best!) – but also because it's so well put together, with a sense of instrumentation that's tight, yet an overall groove that's relaxed and fairly spontaneous – something that was quite rare at the time the record was released! Bluey is at the height of his powers here – stepping strongly into a run of great work that would last for well over a decade – and other key figures include Maysa Leak on vocals, Kevin Robinson on trumpet, and Graham Harvey and Peter Hinds on keyboards. Titles include a killer remake of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing", plus "Change", "Colibri", "Magnetic Ocean", "Closer To The Feeling", "Tribal Vibes", "Pyramid", and "I Love What You Do For Me". ✨✧ IncognitoWho Needs Love (US version with bonus track) ... CD
Narada/Virgin, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Do these guys ever lose their touch? We think not – as this album, the group's umpteenth, is pretty darn great! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! Great stuff all the way through – maybe their best album in years – and a record you'll be playing into the next decade. Titles include "Morning Sun", "Who Needs Love", "Stone Cold Heart", "Where Love Shines", "Blue", "Fly", "If You Want My Love", and "Cada Dia". ✨✧ Bluey (Incognito)Leap Of Faith ... CD
Shanachie, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
No need for a leap of faith where Bluey's concerned – as we've been loving his music with Incognito for many many years, and we're more than happy to hear the man on his own! The vibe here is every bit as soulful and righteous as the best Incognito work – but there's also a more personal sound, too – especially since Bluey's on lead vocals on every track – quite a change from before, as he often lets other singers take the lead! Turns out, Bluey's a hell of a lead singer on his own – with this warm and slightly raspy style that really fits in wonderfully with the grooves – which are heavy on Bluey's own guitar, plus keyboards and other instrumentation from Ski Oakenfull and Richard Bull. If you like Incognito as much as us, there's plenty to love here – and titles include "Stronger", "Leap Of Faith", "Sky", "Keep Myself Together", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "Got To Let My Feelings Show", and "Live Like A Millionaire". Shanachie, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard to believe it's the 30th Anniversary for Incognito – but Bluey's been at it for that long, and to celebrate, he's having one hell of a party with this record! The album's got way more going on than even a regular Incognito set – even though those are plenty darn great – as Bluey's invited plenty of folks along for the celebration, a range of great singers who really open up the sound, and deepen the core jazzy grooves of the set! In addition to regular vocalists like Joy Rose, Tony Momrelle, and Maysa, the set also features work by Leon Ware, Chaka Khan, John-Christian Urich, Ursula Rucker, Vanessa Haynes, and Mario Biondi – the last of whom really brings a lot to the set, with that cool vocal approach used on his Schema albums. And as usual for Bluey, the sound is way more than just straight soul – with plenty of classic jazz funk elements, and a strong nod to the underground sounds of the British scene who've always fostered his music. Titles include "Line In The Sand", "1975", "Your Sun My Sky", "Put A Little Lovin In Your Heart", "All Of My Life", "Expresso Madureira", "Make Room For Love", "Lowdown", "Tell Me What To Do", and "The Winter Of My Springs". ✨✧ Alphonse MouzonMan Incognito ... CD
Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A monstrous bit of jazz funk from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – spacey tracks in a choppy style that reminds us a bit of some of the best European fusion albums from the period, but with a harder groove overall! Mini Moog and ARP trip out the sound throughout, but the underlying rhythms are nice and heavy. Lee Ritenour's on guitar, and he gets a lot of play on the record – but the main groove is Alphonse's heavy funky snakefoot! Al's drums and percussion are furiously frenetic, and he also plays a lot of keyboards – and other players include Tom Scott on tenor, Dave Grusin on clavinet, Victor Feldman on bongos and congas, and Charles Meeks on bass. A few tracks have vocals – by Marty McCall, Jackie Ward, and Caroline Willis – as well as Alphonse himself and the album's also got two very nice break-oriented tracks – "Snake Walk" and "New York City" – both with nice hard drums! Titles include a number of other good fusion groovers, like "Without A Reason", "Just Like the Sun", "Before You Leave", "Just Like The Sun", and "Mouzon Moves On". CD

Expansion (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
The cover looks a bit vintage, but the set features more contemporary tracks from this legendary UK soul group – the combo who gave birth to Incognito at the end of the 80s, and touched a fair bit of other acts as well! Over the decade, Beggar & Co have kept going strong – with a fantastic blend of soul, jazz, and funk – led here by trumpeter Kenny Wellington, who also handles lead vocals on a number of tracks – in a strong lineup that also features saxes and flute from David Baptiste, vibes from Orphy Robinson, and keyboards from Camelle Hinds! As the title implies, most tracks are variations on other recent material – and titles include "Time", "Somebody Help Me Out (boogie back extended)", "Yesterday's Gone (inst)", and 2021 remasters of "Open Sesame", "Sleeping Giants", "Say What's On Your Mind", "Goin To See My Baby", and "While The City Sleeps". The groove is tighter than ever – and very much in the 70s-inspired style that's always made us love the group – a wonderfully warm blend of jazz, funk, and soul that comes off with the feel of a lost treasure from way back! Mario BiondiDare ... LP
Sony (Germany), 2021. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 19.99
Mario Biondi looks a bit angelic on the cover, but his vocals are still nicely down to earth – that wonderfully raspy charm that made us love his music right from the start, and which makes Mario one of the key folks to carry forward the legacy of older jazz singers like Mark Murphy or Mose Allison! Part of that legacy is heard here in remakes of classic Blue Note tunes – but there's also plenty of Biondi's own touches as well – partly in the original songs he brings to the date, but also in the work with Italian groups like the High Five Quintet and Fabrizio Bosso Spiritual Jazz Trio – not to mention his own group, led by keyboardist Massimo Greco – and work on two tracks by Incognito too! With all that instrumental talent on board, the album's a jazzy delight throughout – and titles include "Jeannine", "Paradise", "No Show", "Cantaloupe Island", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Give Our Love Another Chance", "Dream For Two", "Sunny Days", and "Simili". Dome (UK), 2006. Used ... $5.99
A wonderful, bossa-inflected jazzy soul surprise from UK-bred/Atlanta-based diva Julie Dexter and ATL-fellow Khari Simmons of Jiva – an effervescent batch of tunes that meld the best modern soul styles of both artists with a mutual affection for bossa rhythms! The duo pulls off the blend with what feels like an effortless grace – Julie's vocals are light, soulful and often quite jazzy in way which expands nicely on her previous work – with a backdrop of bass, Rhodes and B3, Moog, occasional horns and percussion. Nice! A mellow soul killer from Dira J Sugandi – working here with production from Bluey, and help from the rest of the Incognito crew! In a way, the album's almost an Incognito record at heart – yet Dira's vocals and overall approach really help give it a fresh feel too – a mode that stays away from some of the upbeat groovers you might normally get from Incognito, with a stronger focus on mellow tracks and laidback numbers that really show off her vocals! Other guests on the record include Omar, Ski Oakenful, and Matt Cooper – and titles include "Get Through To You", "Let's Go Back", "Inside Love", "Time Out Of Time", "Bring It On", "Essentially Yours", "Won't You Come With Me", "No More Tears", and "Daydream". Far Out (UK), 2009. Used ... $9.99
Beautiful grooves from Alex Malheiros – best known for his bass work in Azymuth, but stepping out here in a warm and wonderful set of his own! The groove here really takes us back to the sunny, soulful fusion we first loved when Azymuth hit the scene in the 70s – and Malheiros' guidance of the groove is really felt strongly in the album's warm-rolling basslines – a beautiful complement to a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes, tenor, soprano sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone – plus a bit of occasional vocals from Sabrina Malheiros! Production is wonderful – handled by Daniel Maunick with some of the warmth of his Incognito work – and IG Culture comes in at the end to remix four of the album's tracks – almost creating a mini-modern suite to complement to the core 70s vibe of the record. Titles include "The Wave", "Corpo", "Copa A Noite", "Solar", "Sem Pressa", "Baixo Partido", "Serenity", "Uno Esta", and "4 Eyed Viper" – plus remixes of "The Wave" and "Uno Esta", the latter of which is a version of the Bobbi Humphrey classic! Far Out (UK), 2008. Used ... $12.99
A nicely changed-up version of this sweet Brazilian-tinged set! Sabrina Malheiros just keeps on getting better and better – and she really sparkles wonderfully here in a set of fully soulful backings! The album's put together by Daniel Maunick, aka Venom, and son of Bluey from Incognito – and there's a bit of an Incognito sensibility to the whole thing – a warmly soulful feel, touched with lots of jazzy instrumentation and a deeply classic sensibility – all of which makes for a wonderful setting for Sabrina's Portuguese vocals! Arthur Verocai helped on arrangements, and brings in some beautifully soaring strings – really helping to push the sound past the standard Far Out approach – and the whole thing's one of the most compelling albums we've heard from the label in recent years. This new version features rare singles and remixes – and titles include "Brisa Mar (Nicola Conte re-work)", "Connexao", "Ginga De Amor (unreleased)", "New Morning (Nicola Conte re-work)", "Eira Nem Beira (IG Culture re-work)", "Connexao (Paradiso rework)", "Essa Cancao", "Nova Estacao", "Sintonia (inst)", "Brisa Mar (inst)", and "Alem Do Sol". Daniel Maunick's been giving us music in many forms for years – working as Venom on remixes, handling work with Incognito, and a range of other projects – but stepping out in the spotlight on his own is a relatively new thing to Maunick – and a great showcase for all sorts of musical ideas he's never been able to express this well! Given his ties to both Incognito and the Far Out label, there's some great currents of both London soul and global grooves in Daniel's work – but the blend comes across at a level that's very free from any of his roots – kind of a step forward for the cosmic generation of the early 21st Century, with elements that are as planted on the ground as they are soaring to the skies. Maysa Leak's a singer we never tire of hearing – a vocalist who's worked out a subtle, soulful set of classics over the past decade or two – working often with Incognito, and also sounding equally great on her own! Maysa's got a sound that draws on years of older soul music – 70s modern, 80s club, and some of the best revival modes of the 90s – all put together here with a warmly seductive feel, but one that's free from some of the too-easy tricks that often hold back the younger generation. There's a perfect sense of balance on these tunes – solid, confident vocals, but also kept away from commercial territory too – produced wonderfully by Red Rideout, Chris Davis, and Angela Johnson – the last of whom also guests on the record too. The vocals alone are worth the price of admission, but the whole thing's wonderful throughout – possibly the best in years from Maysa, and that's really saying a lot! This set showcases the first 5 years of Talking Loud, and brings together a wealth of great music that hasn't been in print for years, including some great mixes that were only available on singles! 2CD set features 24 tracks that include "Apparently Nothing (12" mix)" by Young Disciples, "K Spells Knowledge (Out & About version)" by K-Collective, "There's Nothing Like This" by Omar, "Always There (Bluey's mix)" by Incognito with Jocelyn Brown, "Find The Feeling (Out & About version)" by Perception, "I Commit (12" mix)" by Bryan Powell, "Prince Of Peace (12" mix)" by Galliano, "Music (12" mix)" by Omar, "Colibri" by Incognito, "Listen (12" mix)" by Urban Species, "Step Right On (dub)" by Young Disciples, "Keep The Fires Burning (12" promo)" by Incognito, "Take Me Now (12" mix)" by Tammy Payne, "Don't Mean A Thing (12" mix)" by Omar, "All I Have In Me (Young Ideas mix)" by Young Disciples, and "Back To The Real World" by K-Collective. ✨✧ Maysa LeakAll My Life (UK pressing) ... CD
Expansion/Rice, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great modern soul album – and the new release from Maysa Leak, the lovely voice behind some of Incognito's best albums! If you know Incognito, you can guess the sound here – but the overall approach is different, with a lot more emphasis on soul sounds and jazzy arrangements, all produced by Bluey, in a manner that's great for Maysa's rich soulful voice! The record follows perfectly in the soulful tradition set by some of London's best singers of the past decade, but it also moves to a whole new level, with nice jazzy touches that remind us of some of the recent American underground soul work, like stuff by N'Dambe or Laurnea. Titles include "Blue Light", "Mirrors", "Hooked On Your Love", "Shadows & Light", "Got To Be Strong", "Earth Child", and a great cover of Gil Scott-Heron's classic "The Bottle". CD

✨✧ Maysa (Maysa Leak)Maysa ... CD
Blue Thumb, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The soulful vocalist of Incognito strikes out on her own – serving up an excellent debut LP! This one's got a bit more of a modern R&B approach than the jazzier work of Incognito – but still stays in the hip London soul mode, thanks to some great production work by Ray Hayden of Opaz! Maysa's voice is incredible – running up to the heavens, and dipping deep in that wonderful way she has, to make the songs bottom out with a heck of a lot of feeling. Titles include "Peace Of Mind", "Goodbye Manhattan", "JFS", "Let It Go", "Sexy", "Black Heaven", and "What About Our Love?". CD

✨✧ MaysaVery Maysa Christmas ... CD
Shanachie, 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's like a Christmas wish come true – a fantastic album of Holiday music, all sung by the soulful Maysa Leak! We've loved Maysa's vocals for years – from her work in Incognito to her long run of solo albums – but she grabs us all over again with the style of this set – a really fresh variation on her excellent sound, with a righteous undercurrent that definitely comes from the spirit of the season! Production is still contemporary and soul-based – done by Chris "Big Dog" Davis, in the spirit of Maysa's other recent records – but the shift in material seems to open up a whole new side of the singer – on titles that include "Pray For Peace", "Jingle Bells", "Joy To The World", "It's The Holidays", and "Christmas Time Is Here". Album also features guest appearances – with Will Downing on "This Christmas", and Gerald Albright on "Silver Bells". CD

✨✧ Maysa (Maysa Leak)Out Of The Blue ... CD
Warlock/N Coded, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweeeeeet work from the wonderful Maysa Leak – quite possibly her best album so far! The record has a really warm original feel – far steps from the earlier Incognito-influences sound of past records (not that that was a bad thing, mind you – but it's even better to hear Maysa stepping out on her own!) The songs are incredibly seductive – a good blend of original tunes, and covers of work by Jhelisa, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly Stone, and other influential artists. Titles include "Friendly Pressure", "Out Of The Blue", "Mr So Damn Fine", "MSDF Interlude", "Tailor Made Love", "Family Affair", "Blue Horizon", "Osaka", and "Head To The Sky". CD

✨✧ Maysa (Maysa Leak)Smooth Sailing ... CD
N Coded, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Smooth Sailing from Maysa Leak – a wonderful little record that captures all the warmth and soul of her work with Incognito, yet which also steps forward strongly in her own voice as well! The album's got a bit of Incognito help from Bluey and crew, but a number of tracks make a nice change by featuring production from Rex Rideout, Will Downing, and Herman (p-Nut) Johnson. The tunes are laidback and mellow, with Maysa's vocals stretching out in a style that's righteous, but nicely restrained – coming across with all the maturity you'd expect from her years in the studio, yet always sounding fresh, personal, and inspired. Titles include "Hypnotic Love", "Smooth Sailing", "Soul Child", "So Very Hot", "All Day Long", and "Scat World". CD

✨✧ Oneness Of JujuAfrican Rhythms ... LP
Black Fire, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A landmark of 70s Afro-styled jazz – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde – a reedman whose work here alone is worth the price of admission – laid out nicely alongside some great percussion, Fender Rhodes, and wonderfully worm vocals on a few tracks. The album's one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic "African Rhythms" and "Liberation Dues" – plus "Kazi", "Funky Wood", "Don't Give Up", "Poo Too", and "Incognito". Brownswood (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set that's even better than the first album from Str4ta – a great side project from Jean Paul Bluey Maunick of Incognito, and one that takes him back to the British 80s funk world from which he came! Gilles Peterson is Bluey's partner on the project – and he's opened the door to a lot of talents from the underground, both classic and contemporary – in a lineup that features vocals from Valerie Etienne, Omar, and Emma Jean Thackray – and work from trumpeter Theo Croker! Keyboardist Peter Hinds is also great, and has a legacy that goes back on the British scene to work in Light Of The World and Atmosfear, both seminal groups – and titles on the album include "Bad Weather", "To Be As One", "Turn Me Around", "City Sounds", "Lazy Days", "Find Your Heaven", "Night Flight", "Why Must You Fly", "Virgil", and "When You Call Me". Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The lesser-known third album by Cedar Walton's landmark Eastern Rebellion combo – one of the most important indie soul jazz groups of the late 70s, still going strong on this set! The lineup is still the same as on the second set – with Bob Berg on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the wonderfully solid team of Billy Higgins and Sam Jones on rhythm. However, the sound here is slightly different – with a more conscious sense of disharmony at times – creating an unsettling edge that replaces the warm, fluid feel of earlier records. The change shows that Walton and the group were still growing and searching – and titles include "Incognito", "Firm Roots", "Seven Minds", and "Never Never Land". CD

A sweet set of funky, jazzy, soulful sounds from Down To The Bone – their best work in years! Main Ingredients grooves on the smoother side of the jazz funk sound, but it's got an immediate, authentic style to it – it may be smooth, but it ain't sleepy! A few tracks feature vocals by Imaani, who we know mostly from her work with Incognito, and she sound's terrific on a trio of tunes here. Soulful keys, funky bass, a great horn section and soul guitar are other integral ingredients here. Includes "Uptown Hustle", "A Change Has Got To Come", "Second Nature", "Watch Me Fly" and "Closer" feat Imaani, "Together We Stand", Cut And Run", "South Side Overdrive" and more. CD

Unique (Germany), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Were the Jazz Invaders ever this soulful before? We don't seem to remember that – as they come on totally strong and wonderful here – with a groove that might even rival the best previous work by big-name combos like Incognito or Brand New Heavies! Like both those groups, the Jazz Invaders are rooted in classic modes – but they've also picked up a lot more funk than before – putting the jazz off to the side a bit, and focusing on the overall groove – a bit like some of the best artists in the mid 70s run of jazz/funk classics from Fantasy Records! Linda Bloenhard adds some great vocals to a number of cuts – furthering the strong soul vibe here – but even the instrumental numbers are great, and sparkle strongly in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, and jazzy riffs on alto, tenor, and trumpet. All tunes are originals – and the writing is great – on tracks that include "Higher On Fire", "Get It Work It", "Get Away", "Disco Fever", "Do It", "Phil's Crossroads", "Discover Disco Lover", and "Much Rosie" CD

Fantastic futuristic fusion from Alex Malheiros – best known as the bassist in Azymuth, but equally great here on his own – and in a completely different sort of way! The set's got heavy contributions from keyboardist Daniel Maunick, of Incognito fame – but the record's definitely got that well-crafted blend of jazz funk and Brazilian rhythms you'd know from Alex's legacy, but maybe tuned a bit more towards a 21st Century sort of groove – the right London touches in all the right places, in the best tradition of the Far Out label! Sabrina Malheiros sings on a few cuts, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Retrato", "The Razor's Edge", "Telegramas Para Arp", "O Temporal", "Kuarup", "Alto Verao", and "Requiem For A Storm". Part two of this stunning collection of the work of the duo known as Masters At Work! This 4CD collection showcases MAW's amazing ability to blend a wide range of influences from house, classic disco, hip hop, and Latin into a dancefloor friendly mix that not only sounds fresh and up-to-date, but which also has a very strong respect for grooves of the past. MAW have worked with so many different artists over the past 5 years, that this collection ends up being as much a rich document of the growth of club and soul music in general, as it is a testament to their own stunning work. Don't think "smooth jazz", think more "Neo Soul" – as the set's put together by Neo Soul powerhouse Dome Records – and features some of their own great recordings mixed with hipper electric jazz tracks from some of the more soulful talents of the past decade or so! There's definitely an instrumental focus here – although some cuts have vocals too – and the jazz component is much more skewed towards an older sort of soulful fusion from the 70s, than some of the weaker or clunkier smooth jazz styles from the contemporary charts – a classic vibe that really makes the collection strong.
