Brilliant later work from Ornette Coleman – quite adventurous stuff, too! By the late 80s, the shock of the new of Ornette's harmolodic sound had worn off enough that majors like CBS/Portrait were more than willing to invest in it – but for every catchy modern groove here, there's a left turn into more subtly daring territory! A few tracks feature Jerry Garcia – "3 Wishes", "Singing In The Shower", and "Desert Player" – and his jazz-folk-psych improv guitar style is a pretty wild match for Ornette and Prime Time. We didn't give those cuts nearly enough credit to over the years! The Garcia-less tracks show Ornette's awareness of hip hop and funky fusion, but he doesn't cop to trends. It's more that he's showing his continuing relevance in the 80s landscape. The group features Denard Coleman on percussion and keys, Calvin Weston on drums, Al MacDowell and Chris Walker on bass, Bern Nix and Charlee Ellerbe on guitars, and Ornette on alto, trumpet and violin. Tunes are still open and full of freedom, but in a cohesive way – as Joe blows tenor and tarogato, on tunes that include "All Twelve", "One For Charlie", "Crystal Ball", "RhythmSpirit", "The Power Of Three", and "Grace Notes". The cover looks anime, but the music is anything but – and instead offers up some very live-action interplay between drummer Takeo Moriyama and pianist Fumio Itabashi! Itabashi's music is full of beautifully lyrical colors and tones, which get plenty of space to flow and flower on the album – on live tracks that sometimes have the drums in the lead, with piano responding strongly – sometimes with more emphasis on piano tones, slightly augmented by the drums. The combination is beautiful, and makes for a wonderfully deep record that's neither free jazz improv, nor too-familiar standards. The tunes are as poetic as their titles – which include "A School Of Fish", "Scolded", "Plovers On The Shore", "The Sea Watarase", "Red Dragonflies", and "The Paper Doll In Bridal Kimono". CD

The great reedman Mark Whitecage is a player who never fully got his due – a really unique talent in terms of phrasing and rhythm, finally given one last chance at the spotlight here on this final recording with The Nu Band, a group in which he played for many years! All four players here are great – Thomas Heberer on quarter tone trumpet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums and percussion – but it also feels as if there's a special sort of focus on the very personal, very expressive sounds that Whitecage can create – as he plays here on alto, flute, and clarinet. There's a mixture of modern structure and free improvisation here – that great legacy of the group, which is there way of bringing forward some of the new thing ideas of the 60s with more personal contemporary improv modes. Titles include "Christophe & Ornette", "Five O'Clock Blues", "The Closer You Are The Further It Gets", "Prayer For The Water Protectors", and "Minor Madness". CD

Vocalist Amy Sheffer works with an all-star cast here – a very cool quartet that includes Billy Bang on violin, William Parker on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums! Bang is especially great, and his work on violin often recalls the spirit of the 80s work that really made us fall in love with his music – a great companion to the offbeat vocalizations of Sheffer, who certainly channels some of the more groundbreaking vocal jazz modes that emerged from the 70s scene onwards. The tracks were recorded in 2001, and some just feature Sheffer's voice with drums – on titles that include "You Rise", "Words From TS", "Drone Bone", "Improv", "Museeum", "Hovering", and "Bleddidit". A long overdue return to duet formation for Joe McPhee and Hamid Drake – the duo who played together so beautifully on the Emancipation Proclamation album! This set is maybe even more personal, and more open – with Drake working some incredible magic on the drum kit, creating sounds that so many others would only get from a huge variety of percussion instruments – while McPhee blows both alto sax and pocket trumpet – sometimes with an intensity that makes it hard to believe the record's not some lost session of his from the 70s! If you think that you missed out on all the famous improv records the first time around, then think again – because this one's an instant classic. Titles include "Endangered Species", "Medgar/Malcolm/Martin", "Keep Going", "Lord Don't Let Them Drop Them Goddamn Nukes On Us Lord", "Sojourner's Truth", "Morning Star", and "Time Was". CD

A recent collaboration between Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink – and a great testament to the decades of musical interaction between the players! The style here is very much in the classic FMP mode that first got Brotzmann and Bennink notice on these shores – free improv, but always with a great sense of care – a clear mutal respect that each artist has not only for the instrumentation of the other, but for their persona as well – as you can really hear Brotzmann and Bennink sounding each other out in the performance – taking the time to find the right sound and space for the other player to work with. Peter plays alto, tenor, tarogato, and b-flat clarinet – and Bennink is on drums. Titles include "This Is My Faith", "My Strength", "I Am His Brother", "Every Man Is Me", "No Man Is My Enemy", "My Deepest Hope & My Only Belief", and "And He Is In & Of Me". CD

Three later live sets from Dizzy Gillespie – all in a single package! Sesjun Radio Shows 1 is great, and if you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". Sesjun Radio Shows 2 is further proof that the genius of Dizzy Gillespie knows no bounds, even in later years – as these two different radio performances feature Diz with very unique saxophonists – both of whom really transform the sound of the group! The first half of the set has Gillespie on trumpet with a young Paquito D'Rivera on soprano and alto sax – a young player really coming into his own here, in an unusual group that also features Canadian guitarist Ed Cherry, bassist Michael Howell, and drummer Ignacio Berroa – on titles that include the funky "Unicorn", plus "All The Things You Are" and "Cripple Crapple Crutch". The second half will be even more surprising to fans of avant jazz – as the legendary Sam Rivers joins the group on tenor and soprano sax – blowing straighter than on his free improv records, but definitely adding an edge! The rest of the group features Cherry and Berroa, with John Lee in on bass for Howell – and titles include "Tanga", "Manteca", and "Birk's Works". Concert Of The Century is a record with a title that's a hell of a claim to make – but it's also a hell of a concert, too – one that features Dizzy Gillespie blowing with an all-star small group lineup – in really stretched-out takes on the tunes, at a level that rivals his best 70s material on the Pablo label! In addition to Gillespie on trumpet, players also include Milt Jackson on vibes, James Moody on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all working together as seamlessly as you'd expect! Titles include "Darben The Redd Foxx", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Get Happy", "Blues N Boogie", "If I Should Lose You", and "Bass Solo/Manha De Carnaval/Work Song". CD

A late 90s record, but one that we might easily put next to similar spiritual improv albums from the 70s – a fantastic meeting of both artists at Chicago's Empty Bottle – with Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and tenor, and Hamid Drake on some amazing drums and percussion! Drake's wonderfully open, fluid sense of sound is a great match for McPhee here – really opening up a side of Joe's music in a way that's a bit different than some of his other recordings of the time, including his Okka Disk material – spirited, but never stressed – exploratory, yet always with a strong sense of direction. Titles include "Hate Crime Cries", "Cries & Whispers", "Mother Africa", and "Emancipation Proclamation". Very spare, but very moving – in the manner of some of the early work by the Art Ensemble of Chicago! CD

A really unique record – one that follows in the Japanese tradition of mixing folk inspiration and jazz instrumentation – yet one that takes the music much father overall, with a freewheeling improvised sound that's totally great! The core energy of the set comes from the saxes of Gil Ok-Yun, who carves out these beautifully edgey lines – next to work on the daegeum from Lee Saeng-Gang, who plays the wood flute with an equally evocative vibe – earthy and folksy at times, but always with a free improv vibe – next to the percussive work on janggu from Lee Sung-Jin and bongos from Ryo Bok-Sung. The set just features two long tracks, both beautiful and both improvised – "Daegeum & Bongos" and "Samul & Saxophone". LP, Vinyl record album

Crucial rare work from Danish piano genius Tom Prehn – a player who's only known for a handful of rare records from the 60s, and some unissued material that has come out in more recent years! This set falls somewhere between the space of both of those points – as the material had been released, but only on reel to reel format – making it even rarer than Prehn's vintage vinyl, and clearly able to use the extended format of the tape to let the group improvise in ways that they couldn't even do on a single record at the time! Case in point is the amazing 44 minute track "Centrifuga" – a cut that seems to have Prehn playing piano that sounds prepared, ala John Cage – mixed with equally unusual sounds from the bass of Poul Elders, some striking sounds from the drums of Finn Slumstrup, and this amazing raw tenor from Fritz Krogh – a player we don't know at all, but who's very much in the best mode of the early free jazz world on the European scene! The second part of the record features four shorter pieces, each numbered variations of "Solherv" – recorded six months after the first track, and with this open sonic sensibility that recalls much more contemporary improv work – such as recordings by Mats Gustafsson, who actually contributed the notes to the set. Fantastic work from reedman Marion Brown – an unissued live set from the mid 70s, and one that features a whole new side of his talents! The music is definitely the improvisations promised in the title – but never in a free jazz sort of way, as Brown is working with a group, who have a nice sort of swing on all the tracks – and almost put Marion into hardbop territory that he hardly ever touched at this time! The whole performance is a unique glimpse at that much richer life that Brown was living overseas in the 70s – a time when he was connecting strongly with the jazz scene in Europe, in ways that were not always that well-documented on record – and also working on the American underground, but in ways that were different from some of his better-known material. This set is certainly one of those sides of his career – a beautifully swinging, soulful set that also features work from Brandon Ross on guitar, Jack Gregg on bass, and Steve McGreven on drums. Titles include "First Improvisation", "Second Improvisation", "Third Improvisation", and so on. CD

Stunning duets from these key improvisers – a set recorded in Paris, and done with a stripped-down and freely playful vibe that's very much like some of the best AACM material of the time! Wadada Leo Smith blows trumpet, Marion Brown is on alto – and both players bring percussion into the mix too – as they shift between shorter and longer improvisations, all handled with that special ear for sonic textures that makes them such subtle giants in their field! The style is very different than the more spiritual vibe of some of Brown's larger group performances from the period – and very much in the spirit of more intimate improvisational recordings that Wadada would issue more often in years to come. One of the first truly important records from Don Cherry as a leader – and an amazingly well-crafted session that brings together ideas from his early years with Ornette, and expands them with some of the freedoms he was learning from the European scene! The record boasts a format and lineup that's quite unusual for Blue Note at the time – 2 side-long "suite" tracks, performed by a group that features Cherry on cornet, Pharoah Sanders on tenor and piccolo, Karl Berger on vibes and piano, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Ed Blackwell on drums, and both Jean-Francois Jenny- Clark and Henry Grimes on bass! There's a fair bit of room for creative improvising on the session, but the overall album's a bit more structured than contemporary free jazz outings – and clearly shows the mark of Cherry's interpolation of styles at the time. Two long suites are entitled "Symphony For Improvisers" and "Manhattan Cry" – with shorter passages that include "Nu Creative Love", "Infant Happiness", "Manhattan Cry", and "Lunatic". CD

A much-needed book for the open-minded listener – a well-written volume from jazz critic John Corbett – and one that's bound to widen your ears to a whole new realm of listening! The book's pocket-sized – maybe so that you can sneak it into a club when visiting a free jazz concert – and it's written in a style that's both personal, but very directive – with a full understanding of the complexities that come into play when listening to improvised music, and a guide towards facing some of the more difficult challenges involved! Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

The title certainly gets it right – as the album's one of the funkiest ever from guitarist George Freeman, and one of the few to really hit that messed-up groove he was working in the clubs before his mid 70s retreat to Chicago! The style here is often all over the map – a mix of soul jazz and funkier numbers, but often served up with less of the direction than you'd get on Prestige, and even less of that on Groove Merchant – more in a raw small combo mode, with Freeman's guitar hitting plenty of raspy notes and weird solo excursions that keep even the mellower tunes exciting! The record features 2 different groups – one with John Young on piano, the other with Bobby Blevins on organ – and brother Von Freeman plays tenor sax on the whole set, although not nearly in the spotlight as George! (Definitely in keeping with something that Von told George many years back – quoted to us by George – "When you've got your own album, make sure that people know that you're the star!") As any fan of the live Grateful Dead experience will tell you, improvisation is the key to the way the group puts their music over on stage – long jams that are filled with musicianship that just got better and better over the years, and which can lead to a very heavenly experience for concertgoers at their shows! Yet this book also gets past some of those overused tropes and really digs deeply – viewing their improvisation from a musical perspective, and showing the larger cultural perspective that such practice created within the subculture of their fans and listeners. There's a very strong focus on the role that improvisation played right at the start of the group's career – especially when they were in a mind-altering, spiritual mode. The birth of a legend – a set that brings together all the important early recordings that made Ravi Shankar such a key ambassador for Indian music in the 60s – long tracks that mix his sitar with really incredible percussion, all spun out with pulsating modal energy that went on to have a huge impact on jazz, rock, and even more serious classical music too! Given that Shankar's cited as an influence by folks from Philip Glass to George Harrison to countless others, this package is really the place to start if you want to understand his music – and as with other titles from the Fremeaux label, the presentation is great, with lots of music in the set, and notes in French and English.
