✨✧ Small FacesOgden's Nut Gone Flake (2CD version) ... CD
Immediate/Snapper (UK), 1968. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
One of the best Brit psychedelic rock albums of the late 60s – one that sounds incredible to this day! On Ogden's Nut Gone Flake the group really found a way to spin a heady, organ rich, drum heavy, and all around big sound into the structure of the 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 minute pop structure – with out sacrificing a bit of the bombast, or burying a genuine groove in superfluous noise cycles. Truly wonderful stuff – we'll listen to this more often than Sgt. Peppers in our lifetime! Tracks include "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", "Afterglow Of Your Love", "Long Ago And World's Apart", "Rene", "Lazy Sunday", "Rollin' Over", "The Journey", "Mad John", "Happydaystoytown" and more. This great 2CD remastered edition a bonus disc of early and alternate versions, rare takes and instrumentals – in a heavy duty package with a nice booklet of notes, too! 26 tracks on 2CDs. CD

Cannonball AdderleyThem Dirty Blues ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Very Good ... $29.99
One of the all-time great ones by Cannonball! This record captures him in the prime of his early soul jazz fame – working with an unbelievably heavy quintet that featured Bobby Timmons on piano (with Barry Harris sitting in on a few tracks), Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. The quintet forged a sound that made them an immediate hit – and which had their tight, jagged, soul-drenched sound getting copied by everyone. The record features some amazing soul jazz standards – like Nat's original version of "Work Song", the first-ever record of Timmons' amazing "Dat Dere", Cannon's slinky "Them Dirty Blues", and the jaunty groover "Jeannine", a wonderful cut by Duke Pearson that never sounded better! The CD features alternates of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere" – for a total of 9 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album
(Small blue label/silver text mono pressing, RLP 12-322, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has some light wear and a split top seam – but vinyl is nice and clean.)

✨✧ Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". ✨✧ Jorge BenJorge Ben (1969) ... LP
Philips/Verve, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! Other tracks include "Criola", Cade Tereza", "Domingas", "Barbarella", "Quem Foi Que Roubou A Sopeira" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter BrotzmannChicago Octet/Tentet (3CD set) ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. The set features three different live recordings, and one long studio set recorded over two days – a fantastic collection of music. Titles include "Burning Spirit (For Kazuka Shiraishi)", "Other Brothers", "Old Bottles No Wine, "Aziz", "Foolish Infinity", "Immediate Music", "Makapoor", "Foolish Infinity", "Other Brothers" and "Divide By Zero". ✨✧ Vashti BunyanSome Things Just Stick In Your Mind – Singles & Demos 1964 to 1967 ... LP
DiCristina, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
Beautiful early work from British singer Vashti Bunyan – an important figure in the acid folk scene at the end of the 60s, heard here on some really wonderful work from a few years before! Some of the tracks have a really trippy style, and others are a bit more like conventional Brit girl pop of the time – but given a very weird twist overall, with a sound that's quite hard to describe! Vashti's vocals have these really dark qualities overall – and even when the backings are fuller (which often they are not), there's a sad, earthy feel to her singing. But equally great is her guitar work – heard with more prominence on most of the album's previously-unissued tracks from mid 60s tapes. Bunyan plays with these warm harmonics that kind of nestle and bristle underneath her vocals – pushing the tunes up with a sense of brightness in contrast to the voice – almost in a Nick Drake sort of way (and trust us, we don't throw around comparisons to his music easily!) The package is a wonderful look at these almost-lost years of Vashti's career – and it features both sides of her Decca and Columbia singles, an unreleased Immediate single, and a lot more tracks pulled from rare tapes from 1964, 1966, and 1967! Set features 25 tracks that include "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", "Train Song", "Love Song", "Winter Is Blue", "Leave Me", "How Do I Know", "Go Before Dawn", "Girl's Song In Winter", "Don't Believe", "17 Pink Sugar Elephants", "Someday", and "I Know". ✨✧ Gal CostaIndia ... CD
Philips/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". The whole thing's incredibly beautiful – and it's got Gal in a wild bikini cover, too! CD

United Artists/RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
Great work from the second chapter of The Spencer Davis Group – the time immediately after Steve Winwood left to form Traffic, and the combo stepped forward into some even headier music of their own! This period of the SDG isn't nearly as well known as their early hits – and the box set is a really surprising revelation overall – music that has some of the R&B currents of the earlier group, but which is also infused with a headier, trippier style too – not just in the instrumentation, but in the way the records are put together – with cool elements that space things out slightly, but never get too indulgent! The mix is a bit like that on the earliest work of The Move – or that shift that Small Faces were taking after moving to the Immediate label – and as with previous work from the Spencer Davis Group, there's as much great Hammond on the tunes as there is guitar, thanks to the talents of new member Eddie Hardin. Some of the best cuts almost hit a freakbeat mode – with a very cool mix of mod and psych – and the 3CD set features the full albums Funky and With Their New Face On – plus material from the Round The Mulberry Bush soundtrack, lots more singles, some BBC sessions, and even some alternate and unreleased tracks too. 68 tracks in all – titles that include "Letters From Edith", "Time Seller", "Taking Out Time", "After Tea", "Sanity Inspector", "What A Way To Die", "Firefly", "Magpie", "Groove Extra", "The Girls Song", "Don't Want You No More", "Der Wassermann", and "Picture Of Heaven". Merle Haggard's affectionate 1969 tribute to the genius of Jimmie Rodgers. For all of his rough, outlaw ways and reactionary moods – particularly in the immediate years after Okie from Muskogee – Merle was also deeply sensitive and respectful of his influences. Kasai All StarsAround Felicite (with bonus CD) ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2017. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.98
Wonderful work from the Kasai All-Stars – a group we first discovered in the Congotronics series with Konono No 1 – and who still have the same wonderful blend of raw rhythms, fuzzy distortion, and very powerful vocals! Their music has this powerfully organic vibe – with acoustic and electric elements bumping together in a fantastic way – that special sort of immediate power that really grabs you, and never asks for deeper cultural understanding as the price of admission. And the record's also got some interesting surprises too, in that a few numbers are performed by the larger Orchestra Symphonique Kimbanguiste, used in the soundtrack of which the main Kasai music is a part – versions of a few compositions by Arvo Part, which creates a heavenly juxtaposition next to the earthier numbers – with a vibe that's quite unusual, and makes the Kasai music seem even more powerful. Titles include "Kapinga Yamba", "In Praise Of Homeboys", "Tshalemba", "Mabela", "Quick As White", and "Tshitua Fuila Mbuloba". CD

Maria Teresa LucianiSounds Of The City (Suoni Di Una Citta) ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $26.99
An amazing sonic portrait of the modern city – one created on the early 70s Italian scene, but lost to the shifting sands of time, due to its release as a sound library-only album! We've heard Maria Teresa Luciani on a few other records of this nature – but this one may well be her greatest – music that's beyond categorization in the way it presents its subject – not really jazz or soundtrack styles at all, but also not some sort of too-modern compositional idiom either. Instead, the whole thing seems to make some sort of honest, organic sense – as it presents differing aspects of the city, both residential and commercial, public and private – often with a sense of darkness in the immediate approach, but also with a current of hope at times too. Titles include "Public Gardens", "Modern Residential Complex", "Supermarket", "Poor Neighborhoods", "Power Station", "Traffic", and "International Airport". LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah SandersElevation ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99
A fantastic album by Pharoah Sanders – one of his later albums for Impulse, but one of his best! The record has Pharoah grooving in a strongly modal style – working up long passages of rhythm, piano, and percussion that really build on the promise delivered in earlier tunes on records like Jewels Of Thought and Tauhid – that strong sense of flow that was possibly Sanders' greatest contribution to the world of spiritual jazz – over and above his own work on tenor sax! The tunes never go too far out, and have a really joyous feel that we totally love – opening Pharoah up with that bright spirit that makes some of his 70s work so great, really pushing him past the darkness of the immediate post-Coltrane years. Other players include Joe Bonner on piano, Calvin Hill on bass, Michael White on violin, and Michael Carvin on drums – and titles include the tremendous track "Greeting To Saud", plus "Elevation", "Spiritual Blessing", "Ore Se Re", and "The Gathering". The biggest record that Al Stewart ever cut – as you no doubt know from the oft-played title track – but a set that also stands as a great testament to all the many years he'd been crafting fine music before fully getting the recognition he deserved! Stewart's got a way with words that's like few of his contemporaries – maybe a bit like Donovan, with whom he shares a similar vocal approach – and also a clear early love of Bob Dylan, yet an immediate evolution past that influence – so that the whole thing is very much in a world of Al's own, with some slight 70s mainstream production, but not enough to soften the music into more mainstream AOR – despite the fame of the hit. Titles include, of course, "Year Of The Cat", plus "One Stage Before", "Flying Sorcery", "Broadway Hotel", "Lord Grenville", "If It Doesn't Come Naturally Leave It", and "Midas Shadow". VariousGolden State Psychedelia ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
San Francisco is well-known as ground zero for the Summer Of Love – and the city gave us plenty of big bands that helped push the new sounds of the 60s firmly into the rock mainstream – but at the same time, the city also housed plenty of lesser-known acts and really experimental groups who were making some amazing sounds that never fully got their due! This set completely corrects that lack – by digging deep into the SF scene of the late 60s, and coming up with handfuls of fuzzy nuggets that show us that there's still plenty to discover from this ultra-rich moment in music – a time when there was so much greatness going down, even a collection like this only scratches the surface. And yet, that scratch is one hell of a treat – as the whole thing's filled with lots of unissued tracks from back in the day, rare singles, and lots more – all originally produced at Golden State Recorders, and documented here in some very well-done notes. Titles include "Blow Up" by The Goody Box, "Meditorium" by The Carnival, "Start Seeing" by The Short Yellow, "Sunday At The Lotus Parlor" by The Gants, "Chasing Rainbows" by The Bristol Boxkite, "Wet Chant" by The Immediate Family, "Daddy's Zoo" by The Tow Away Zone, "Black Diamonds" by Ticket Agents, "Speed" by Celestial Hysteria, "F*ck For Peace" by Magician, "Don't Worry Me" by The Seventh Dawn, and "My Kind Of People" by Just Slightly Richer. ✨✧ Neil ArdleyKaleidoscope Of Rainbows (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Airmail (Japan), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet set from British jazz rock genius Neil Ardley – one that has him working off the vibe explored on the Greek Variations album, but hitting a sound that's a fair bit funkier overall! As with other efforts, Ardley draws here on some really top-shelf talents for his ideas – soloists who include Ian Carr on trumpet, Ken Shaw on guitar, and Tony Coe, Barbara Thompson, and Brian Smith on saxes! The tracks are all quite longish, and unfold in a really organic way – building over an immediate rhythm at some points, or letting the soloists set the main vibe at others. There's nothing overly-obtuse about the record at all, and Ardley never lets anyone dominate too much – making the album a strong group effort with a really unified vision – but one with plenty of space for the feeling of the individual players. Titles include "Rainbow One", "Rainbow Two", "Rainbow Three", and so on. CD

An incredibly strong set by McCoy Tyner – one of his best late 60s sides for Blue Note – and a record that really hints at the majesty he'd attain on record in the 70s! The album features Tyner's piano at the head of a large group that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Bennie Maupin on tenor, and James Spaulding on alto and flute – very hip players who help McCoy forge the early steps in the spiritual ensemble mode that would become his greatest contribution to jazz in the immediate post-Coltrane years. The Space Age Is Here To Stay covers a wide range of the cosmic jazz styles Ra traveled (and pretty much invented) from the late 50s to early 80s – from the immediate post-doo wop underground sound he worked in the late 50s, to the impeccable mix of free jazz and subtle, soulful tones a decade later, to the searching spiritualism that came later still. For all that's going here stylistically, the vocals and thematic lyricism hold it all together aesthetically, with Ra himself on chants and spoken passages, June Tyson and Hattie Randolph bringing an angelic quality on some numbers, and all around excellent Arkestra ensemble vocals throughout! The incredible opener "Along Came Ra/The Living Myth" is a live recording from Paris in 1983 that sets the creative bar quite high with feverish percussion, the sweetly soulful voice of June Tyson, and spacey spoken word by Ra. That said, the quality soars high throughout – and other titles include "Interplanetary Music No. 1", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Space Is The Place", "Forest Of No Return", "Truth About Planet Earth", "Space Chant (Third Heaven)", "Antique Blacks", "Enlightenment" and more. ✨✧ McCoy TynerTender Moments (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Tyner's writing is out front here, and he's laid out some great charts for the group to groove upon – hitting a spiritual vibe that's very much in the mode of music to come on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz in the 70s! The set includes Tyner's classic "Man From Tanganyika", plus "Mode To John" and "The High Priest". LP, Vinyl record album

Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The debut of a legend – and a record that, we hate to admit it, must have actually had some political and cultural punch at the time – especially as the group had yet to go onto super-stardom, and were here stepping out with a butch camp, all-gay style that still had some power in the immediate post-Stonewall years. The approach here is similar to their later hits, but also nicely grounded in the standard disco mode of the time – thanks to some vocal arrangements from Phil Hurtt, and soulful string and horn backings from Horace Ott. Tracks are long, and as gay as you'd expect – but it's also not like the group's making fun of themselves as much yet either. Titles include "Fire Island", "Village People", "San Francisco", and "In Hollywood". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tony McPhee & FriendsMe & The Devil/I Asked For Water She Gave Me Gasoline ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two early solo albums from Tony McPhee – one of which is more of a mixed group affair overall! First up is Me & The Devil – fantastic acoustic blues from Tony McPhee – maybe best known as a member of The Groundhogs, but working here in a looser, more stripped-down mode – acoustic guitar, harmonica, and spare rhythms – all of which give Tony plenty of space to stretch out in the lead! As with Alexis Korner during the end of the 60s, McPhee's clearly influenced by older American blues, but is turning the phrasing towards a mode that would be picked up and shifted in just a year or two by bigger groups in the rock world – a Swan Song legacy that includes Led Zeppelin and Bad Company. Yet in in the all-acoustic, very rootsy sound here the approach is very different – and the record also features some equally bluesy vocals by a young Jo-Ann Kelly! Titles include "Elevator Woman", "Duckin & Dodgin", "Same Thing On My Mind", "Broke Down Engine", "Buy You A Diamond Ring", and "You Better Mind". I Asked For Water is a very cool collection of bluesier work from the UK underground at the end of the 60s – a set put together by Tony TS McPhee of The Groundhogs – with work by that group, Brett Marvin & The Thunderbolts, and the Andy Fernbach Connexion – working in different settings, and with other tracks that feature vocals by Jo-Ann Kelly, who you might know from later soul fame – as well as John Lewis, Jim Pitts, and Graham Hines. Yet all work is in a country blues mode – but with phrasing that really points the way towards near-immediate rock transformations of such a sound – on titles that include "Oh Death", "Dust My Blues", "Built My Hopes Too High", "Nervous", "Boogie Woman", and "I'm So Tired". Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A great document of the continuing influence of Charles Mingus in the immediate years after his passing – served up here in a set of Mingus-related groups recording for the Black Saint/Soul Note label! First up is Reincarnation – a very special Mingus Dynasty recording, with a lineup that includes some of the most soulful players from Charles' later group – Ricky Ford on tenor, Richard Williams on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Roland Hanna on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums! Titles include "East Coasting", "Reincarnation Of A Love Bird", "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", and "Ecclusiatics". Mingus' Sound Of Love is a record that definitely lives up to its title – as alums from the Mingus band work together here in a set of fresh changes on classics from the master - titles that include "Celia", "Ysabel's Table Dance", "Caroline", and "Sue's Changes". Group includes Randy Brecker on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, James Newton and Craig Handy on reeds, and Roland Hanna on piano. Last up are two albums comprising a concert performance – Live At The Theatre Boulogne Billancourt in Paris – with a great Mingus-inspired group that includes David Murray and Clifford Jordan on tenors, John Handy on alto, Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpets, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Jaki Byard on piano! Tracks are quite long – and very much in the Mingus tradition. Four full albums – each in tiny sleeves with the original artwork. CD

RPM (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of British tracks from the mid 90s – music that was initially a big part of the scene at club Smashing – which began with older junkshop/thrift store records, and soon morphed into a cultural force of its own! As such, the tracks here often reference the past in some way, while also sounding very immediate to the British scene of the 90s – and many of the numbers here are from a farther hinterland of indie music, which never got nearly as much circulation over on this side of the Atlantic as some of the bigger Brit names of the time. The whole thing is a surprisingly rich musical discovery from a time we thought we knew well – and the 2CD set features 40 tracks in all, including some unreleased material – work by Powder, Linoleum, Spearmint, Huggy Bear, Heavenly, Peepshow, VA6, We Are Pleb, The High Fidelity, Velocetee, Sexton Ming & Steady, Pram, Mambo Taxi, Bis, Sound 5, The Delgados, and many others! Amadana (Japan), 2020. New Item ... $124.99 149.99
A totally great little unit – and a great answer to the problem of the disappearing CD player! This tiny little CD player is easy to pack up and go – about the size of a stack of a few CDs, and equally light – with no internal battery unit or speakers – just a USB cord to provide power, and connection if needed – although the player also has bluetooth as well! This means that you can bring the player with you wherever you go, plug it into a car jack or conventional USB adaptor for a wall outlet – and either listen via headphones, or by streaming to a bluetooth speaker! The quality is great – and most immediately, the whole thing becomes a much-needed replacement for the automobile CD player, which is becoming a thing of the past. But it also allows you to take your CDs out on the back porch, stream through a blue tooth speaker, and enjoy a lot better fidelity than you'd get from your phone or MP3 player – plus a much bigger selection of music if you have a CD collection like us! The unit has a nice woodgrain finish, easy to handle controls, and a slim design that will make it easy to take anywhere – and the bluetooth connection means that you can play CDs in any car with a bluetooth feature! Comes with a USB power cord, and also features a headphone jack (also useful to connect to a speaker), and SPDIF connection, if you have that on your standard stereo. Turntable

The stunning second album from Mary J Blige – a record that showed that both the singer and her new form of soul music were around to stay! Production is from Sean Combs and Chucky Thompson – very heavy on beats borrowed from the underground, but nicely tuned to the mainstream – all with a streetwise vibe that immediately made the lady such a nice contrast to some of the more cloying commercial R&B from a few years before. And if you think the approach is all attitude and hype, guess again – because Blige almost reintroduces deep soul to the charts with the classic "I'm Going Down" – alongside other classics that include "You Bring Me Joy", "Be Happy", "My Life", "Mary's Joint", "Don't Go", "I Love You", "No One Else", "I Never Wanna Live Without You", "I'm The Only Woman", and "Mary Jane". 25th Anniversary edition – with bonus CD that features the extra cuts "Mary Jane (rmx with LL Cool J)", "I'm Goin Down (rmx with Mr Cheeks)", "I Love You (rmx with Smif N Wessun)", "Be Happy (Bad Boy butter rmx)", "Be Happy (Ron G rmx)", and "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman". An incredible batch of Brazilian grooves – a rare Mexican album cut by Luiz Eca of the Tamba Trio, featuring early work by Claudio Roditi, Nana Vasconcelos, and Joyce! The sound is a swirling mix of late bossa and the baroque grooves that were coming out of Brazil at the end of the 60s – deeply jazzy, with some nice soulful touches – and very strong use of voices and instruments together in one sweeping sound that's immediately captivating! We've loved the music of Shaun Escoffery for many years now – right from that time when he emerged from the UK scene as key talent in the Omar generation – the kind of strong songwriting voice and confident singer that really helped mark a difference from the world of soul in the US! Escoffery has evolved wonderfully over the course of his superb recordings – and here, he continues to grow even more – coming on strong, and maybe with more of a 60s soul inspiration than ever before – kind of a romping, vibrant approach to the music that echoes the Motown generation, while still also sounding immediately contemporary, and graced with a production style that maybe makes Shaun's vocals sound even more powerful than ever! We've been waiting decades for Escoffery to get the international fame he deserves – and maybe this record is the one that will put him over the top, given the strength of the songs and the overall set as a whole. Groundbreaking work from David Grubbs – a name you might know from his decades as a musician, singer, and improviser in a variety of settings – or from his more recent emergence as an author – heard from here in a book that unifies both sides of his creative personality! In some ways, the volume follows the territory of Grubbs' previous Now That The Audience Is Assembled – in that it, like that book, is a mixture of prose and poetry, meditating on the role of a central figure in a creative environment. But this time around, the approach is more personal, and less fantastical – and really gets at the heart of the author's many years of experience in the process of making a recording – but in a way that's very different than any other sort of "behind the glass window" sort of project. At a surface level, the book's about the process of recording an album – but immediately, the whole thing unfolds with the complexity of a recorded work itself – a beautiful merging of writing on music and the practice of music itself – at once poetic, but also very down to earth. 146 pages, softcover. There's a hip, scatting vibe to the music that almost puts Hicks in the same 70s territory as Ben Sidran – although maybe a few notches earlier in terms of his inspirations – yet coming across with a breezy warmth that's really beautiful, almost like the shift that Maria Muldaur had made from her trad styles of the 60s to the groove of "Midnight At The Oasis". This great 2CD set features a new stereo mix of the entire album on the first disc – and the second features great rare and alternate tracks – including "Heartbreaker (inst)", "Scarlet (with Jimmy Page)", "All The Rage", "Criss Cross", "100 Years Ago (piano demo)", "Dancing With Mr D (inst)", "Hide Your Love", and 1973 Glyn Johns mixes of "Silver Train", "Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", and "Dancing With Mr D". Sa, Rodrix & GuarabyraSa, Rodrix & Guarabyra ... CD
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1971. Used ... $11.99
A mainstream rock trio from 70s Brazil – but one that's still pretty great too – working here in a post-Tropicalia blend of straightforward styles borrowed from England and the US, mixed with some of the more creative modes of the South American scene of the time! The lack of English lyrics gives the work an immediately strange feel – as does its sense of unusual timings, and its ability to mix heartfelt moments with slightly more ironic ones – yet never in a way that sounds to gimmicky or forced. Production is pretty great too – with a great sense of space between the speakers, and a nicely compressed sound on the vocals. Titles include "Zepelin", "Hoje Ainda E Dia De Rock", "Juriti Butterfly", "Blue Riviera", "Mestre Jonas", "Os Anos 60", and "Primeira Cancao Da Estrada". CD

Pharoah SandersOh Lord, Let Me Do No Wrong ... LP
Doctor Jazz, 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Later work by Pharoah Sanders – and an overlooked set that's filled with some pretty nice material! The group features electric piano by Donald Smith and acoustic piano by William Henderson – and the groove is a mixture of spiritual soul jazz with a few more standard numbers that differ from Pharoah's albums on Impulse. At the best moments, Pharoah is blowing with all his classic magic – crafting the sort of long and raspy lines that always grab us immediately, as the rhythm section comps out modally behind him, setting up a soulfully swinging groove. Highlights include a version of Coltrane's "Equinox", done in a building modal way that stays very faithful to the original, and a long version of "Out Of This World", one that runs for 14 minutes, building into a straight jazz groove that layers sound upon sound upon sound. Leon Thomas sings a bit on the record – and titles include "Next Time You See Me", "If It Wasn't For A Woman", and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that explodes right out of the gate with a sound that's all its own – a fantastic collaboration between drummer Ramon Lopez and the long-running Japanese duo of Natsuki Tamura on trumpet and Satoko Fujii on piano – two players who are able to effortlessly burst out in this driving wall of sonic power, then immediately stop on a dime! There's a bold beauty to the record that's undeniable – a performance that's really a cut above, even in the company of other excellent records on the Not Two label – and we're not sure if we've ever heard the combination of trumpet, piano, and drums come off this well before – sonic surprises throughout, but always rich in organic integrity. Titles include "Metaphors", "Your Shadow", "From Spring To Summer", "Came Left", "The Temple Bell", "Encounter", and "Straw Coat". CD

David Toop & Paul BurwellWounds ... LP
Quartz/Song Cycle (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A fantastic set of music from the young David Toop – a package that comes from tapes of improvisations with percussionist Paul Burwell – who plays "a variety of percussion arranged on the floor, and in a kit, most of which fell over immediately prior to this performance"! That kind of statement on the cover really gives a great idea of the spirit of the set – an "anything goes" effort in pursuit of sonic experimentation – as Toop handles a wide variety of sounds on guitar, flutes, and "home made and found stuff" – plus water, noise, rubbish, and small explosives – all then taken back to his studio and edited together to create this record. The whole thing's a great precursor to a contemporary world in which jazz recordings allow for a lot more edit and production after a live performance – but there are also more subtle elements that tie the record more to the Incus generation of British improvisation too. Phil Woods/Tommy Flanagan/Red MitchellThree For All ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
A really great record – one we're surprised that we like so much! On the surface, the album appears to be an inconsequential 80s session by three older giants of their instrument – Woods on alto, Flanagan on piano, and Mitchell on bass. But Woods' tone here, although played straightly, is fantastic – with an edge that grabs you immediately, holding your ears throughout the session with a bright yet sad approach that matches the sound he gets on a rare few albums when he's really doing things right. Tracks are open, soulful, and really incredibly played – and although this might not be the most groundbreaking jazz album you'll buy this year, it's a heck of a great little album, with a sound that will keep you going back more than you think! Titles include "Goodbye Mr Evans", "Talking", "It's Time To Emulate The Japanese", "Reets Neet", and "You're Me". CD

A mad return to form for Tom Ze – the legendary Brazilian musician who's been one of the few artists to keep the flag of Tropicalia flying over the years! The set features Tom in a number of styles – rocky, quirky, folksy, electric, and always with that mad sense of humor that makes his work so enjoyable. A few of the tunes on the set were recorded live, and there's a pronounced political nature to much of the material – a fact that's immediately apparent on the anti-war track "Companheiro Bush", but which bubbles nicely through most of the album as well. Titles include "DesenRock-se", "Dona Divergencia", "Sem Saia Sem Cera Censura", "Urgente Pela Paz", "Bate Boca", "Voce E O Mel", "Sao Sao Paulo", "Lingua Brasileira", "Vaia De Bebado Nao Vale", and "Interlagos F1". Various1978 – The Year The UK Turned Day-Glo (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1978. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
The title's maybe a bit misleading – as most folks think of day-glo as a color associated with some of the most throwaway culture of the 80s – but the brightness of the hue definitely marks the big explosion in styles during the key British year of 1978 – a time when the punk revolution of 1977 opened the door for a big range of modes to follow! It might be said that the post-punk years came immediately after the initial days of punk – and they definitely begin here, as hard and fast modes are mixed with more unusual styles that include mod revival moments, electronic experiments, and even some offbeat pop – expressions of humor, anger, and a shifting political landscape – served up as an amazing document of the creative intensity of the time! As with other Cherry Red boxes, the overall package is great – a huge amount of notes to support the 79 tracks within – a diverse array of music from Blue Steam, The Others, UK Subs, The Jam, Monochrome Set, Wreckless Eric, Spizzoil, Public Image Ltd, 999, The Stranglers, Japan, The Only Ones, Magazine, Alternative TV, Slush, Time Machine, Eater, The Bozos, Tyla Gang, Ed Banger, No Sweat, The VIPs, John Cooper Clarke, Scritti Politti, Penetration, Stiff Little Fingers, Alberto Y Los Trios Paranoias, Teardrops, Coventry Automatics, Menace, Bleach Boys, Jilted John, Zones, Electric Chairs, and many more! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of spirituality that runs deeper than previously expressed. The key track in this vision is his brilliant modal number "Maiden Voyage" – one of those tunes that sounded totally fresh immediately, and which was picked up by many others as a jazz anthem during the 60s. The rest of the album's equally great – and features George Coleman on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all making for a very hip lineup that really lets Herbie open up stylistically! Other titles include "Dolphin Dance", "Little One", and an original version of "Survival Of The Fittest". CD

The prisoners are often given space to tell their own stories, which is great – as it makes the book very different than just some gritty scopophilic presentation of the material – and the juxtaposition of portraiture and prison landscape really illuminates the setting too. A fantastic jazz group from the contemporary South African scene – one who've got a very righteous vibe, and a sound that's maybe even more far-reaching than any jazz we've heard from that scene back in the 60s or 70s! The group's led by Shabaka Hutchings on tenor, but is a very collaborative ensemble – with these tremendous upfront vocals from Siyabonga Mthembu, a singer with a very unique approach, and a spiritual current that we'd rank right up there with work by Leon Thomas, Dwight Trible, or Joe Lee Wilson, even though Mthembu's very much his own man. The group's also got two other great horn players – Mthunzi Mvubu on alto and Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet – plus Fender Rhodes and piano from Nduduzo Makhathini, and a wonderfully early array of bass, percussion, and drums – which lay down a fantastic groundwork for each tune. The music starts somewhere in the spiritual territory of the post-Coltrane scene – but really takes off immediately with its own individual spirit – ala Kamasai Washington – and the performance is live and unadorned, without some of the studio efforts that show up on other Brownswood label releases. An excellent set of smooth modern soul from Gary Taylor – originally a bassist on classic soul sides of the 70s and 80s, but emerging here in the 90s as a stunning vocalist with a very strong sound. Universal, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark debut from the mighty Erykah Badu – a record that really set the world on fire when it first appeared – and which continues to blow our minds all these many years later! There's a simple, straightforward grace to the album that comes through immediately – as Erykah tries to forge new ground for soul music, but does it by taking a few steps backwards – not into retro modes, but more in a way that focuses on the core vocal, songcraft, and right instrumentation that can make a special soul record such a standout. She does a great job of both avoiding easy commercial paths, or some of the temptations to embrace other then-contemporary genres – which has made the work of some of her colleagues seem a bit dated. The record defines a whole new style of expression – "Baduizm", if you will – one in which Erykah sings with a depth that stretches back through a century's worth of jazz, soul, and gospel influences – but works a groove in a stripped-down and forward-thinking mode that sets the pace for countless Neo Soul singers to come! Titles include "Certainly (Flipped It)", "Next Lifetime (radio)", "On & On", "Appletree", "No Love", "4 Leaf Clover", and "Sometimes (mix #9)". CD

Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Where the preceding Cosmogramma upped the stranger, spacier and more abstract textures, Until The Quiet Comes is a bit more inviting – and to his credit, Flying Lotus keeps things as innovative as ever, while still giving this one just a bit more immediately appealing atmosphere. There's nearly always a compelling beat, whether it's abstract boom bap or bubbly and synthy, with heavy bass and thick waves of sound floating over. An incredible roster of guests contribute, too – including string-arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson, vocalists Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, keyboardist Dorian Concept, and others – but there's little doubt that this is purely the Flying Lotus show. Primitive genius from the mighty Monks – their early demos for tracks that would eventually be ignited and explode on record for the uber-essential Black Monk Time LP and others – including the pre-Monks single by The 5 Torquays – issued properly in full for the first time ever by Light In The Attic! The thing that knocked us out about the Early Years compilation almost immediately is how sharp and clear the sound is – you never know the recording quality you'll get with the word "demo" in the title, but this stuff sounds great – secondly, the tracks demonstrate just how fierce these dudes were early on! The eerie organ, tribal thump of the drums, fuzzed out guitar and sneering vocals are in full glory here. And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". This great 2LP set features a new stereo mix of the entire album on the first disc – and the second features great rare and alternate tracks – including "Heartbreaker (inst)", "Scarlet (with Jimmy Page)", "All The Rage", "Criss Cross", "100 Years Ago (piano demo)", "Dancing With Mr D (inst)", "Hide Your Love", and 1973 Glyn Johns mixes of "Silver Train", "Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", and "Dancing With Mr D". ✨✧ Jamila WoodsHeavn ... CD
Jagjaguwar, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic debut from Chicago soul singer Jamila Woods – the kind of artist that makes us very proud to be located in the Windy City! Woods is an extremely inventive lyricist – strongly inspired by poetry, but also immediately trying to communicate in a wider spectrum with her sound – at a level that's maybe even smarter and more sophisticated than you'd guess from her look on the cover, which might make you think that she's just another pretty face in mainstream music! Instead, Woods seems ready to reinvent the role of the female singer in soul music – getting help from hip collaborators who include our hometown hero Chance The Rapper, as well as Nico Segal, Saba, Lorine Chia, and Noname. Titles include "Bubbles", "In My Name", "Popsicle", "Assata's Daughters", "Blk Girl Soldier", "Emerald Street", "Breadcrumbs", "Stellar", "Holy", and Good Morning" – plus "LSD", a tribute to our city's great lakefront! Elektra/Sundazed, 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the great lost psych albums on late 60s Elektra Records – a set that's maybe got enough power and majesty to stand next to contemporaneous label releases by Love and The Doors! Like both of those groups, Clear Light have a vision here that's completely their own – a sound that steps out immediately to let you know that they're not just another copycat combo from the garage underground, and instead have this vivid new message that demands to be heard – unabashedly forward in its conception, and with a surprisingly sinister edge – yet all without any sense of being too full of itself either! Production is by Paul Rothschild, and is as superb as his best Elektra work of the period – and titles include "Black Roses", "With All In Mind", "The Ballad Of Freddie & Larry", "Sand", and "Night Sounds Loud". ✨✧ Mort SahlMort Sahl At The Hungry I ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Although not nearly as well-remembered as Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl is really our favorite comedian from the late 50s. He's got this incredible delivery style that is both immediately arresting and surprisingly heartfelt – and instead of doing short canned "bits", he just sort of rambles on at length about news, politics, and other groovy subjects. This album captures him before a very hip crowd at San Francisco's legendary Hungry I, and it's probably as good a glimpse into post-war American neuroses as you'll ever get! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has two cutout holes, light wear, and a small peeled spot on back from sticker removal.)
