Serious BiznessFor Your Immediate Attention ... CD
Folkways, 1982. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unusual music from the duo of Jaribu and Ngoma Hill – a pair who work together here in a mode that's partly the acoustic blues of the rural scene in the south, but fused with more urban elements too – including a bit of gospel spirit, and folk-inspired righteousness! As you might guess from their name, these guys have a fair bit of message in their music – delivered maybe with even more power in this setting than if they had a larger group behind them – as the duo vocals and acoustic guitar seem to be more than enough to get the meaning across! Titles include "High Rise Tenements", "Where Is The Justice", "The No Nuke Song", "Registration", "White Power Dreams", and "Undocumented". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Strike UnderImmediate Action EP (red vinyl pressing – with bonus 7" single) ... 12-inch
Wax Trax, 1981. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $28.99
An incredible record from the Chicago scene – the rare first-ever record on Wax Trax, and a lost punk nugget that's very different than anything else the label would ever release! Strike Under never made the scene as big as some of their contemporaries, but they really knocked it out of the park with this record – setting up that legacy of sharp, tuneful punk rock that The Effigies, Naked Raygun, and other Chicago groups would carry forward – served up here with the effortless punch of an early record on Dischord! Titles include "Closing In", "Sunday Night Disorientation", "Context", "Immediate Action", and "Elephant's Graveyard". 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited, numbered red vinyl pressing – with bonus 7 inch single with "One Eye" and "DamagedGoods" – in special sleeve with insert and matchbook too!)

Mark MurphyWho Can I Turn To? ... CD
Immediate (UK), 1966. Used ... $14.99
Stunningly great album by Mark Murphy, recorded in the UK in the mid-60s for the mostly-rock Immediate label – but certainly one of his best from that decade! The album sees the American jazz singer teaming up with Kenny Napper, Ronnie Scott's bassist, on a set of arrangements that are completely different from those on other Murphy albums – especially his American ones. In fact, the sound and style is very similar to that used on some of the early Scott Walker solo albums – which is no surprise since Napper, in Ronnie Scott's band, backed up Walker during his rare solo live engagements. The album also boasts other British jazz greats – like Tony Coe, Kenny Baker, and Alan Branscombe – and it's got a beautifully airy quality that works perfectly with Murphy's rich, tightly-controlled voice. Titles include "Star Sounds", "You'd Better Love Me", "In Love for The Very First Time", "Talk To Me Baby", "That's What Makes A Girl", and "Who Can I Turn To?". Nice one! CD

✨✧ Small FacesOgden's Nut Gone Flake ... LP
Immediate, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best Brit psychedelic rock albums of the late 60s – one that sounds incredible to this day! On Ogden's Nut Gone Flake the group really found a way to spin a heady, organ rich, drum heavy, and all around big sound into the structure of the 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 minute pop structure – with out sacrificing a bit of the bombast, or burying a genuine groove in superfluous noise cycles. Truly wonderful stuff – will listen to this more often than Sgt. Peppers in our lifetime! Tracks include "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", "Afterglow Of Your Love", "Long Ago And World's Apart", "Rene", "Lazy Sunday", "Rollin' Over", "The Journey", "Mad John", "Happydaystoytown" and more. Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". A samba soul masterpiece from Jorge Ben – one of the most brilliant records to come out the fertile late 60s Brazilian scene – and an incredible album that works with the psychedelic flourishes of Ben's contemporaries and a deeper undercurrent of soul & funk! This is one of the most amazing early Jorge Ben LPs, recorded at the end of the 60s, when Jorge was singing with a stone-cold soul sound. The sharp, tight arrangements by Rogerio Duprat & Jose Briamonte made tracks like "Pais Tropical", "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", and "Que Pena" immediate classics – while the percussion and rhythms of Trio Mocoto provide a good part of the unique backdrop. The album is a mix of funky samba, soaring Brazilian soul, and sweeping orchestrations that give the whole thing a jazzy finish – and it's some of the best work that Jorge Ben ever recorded! What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later sampling hip hop ones. The record's got a sophisticated soul approach that moves the music way past slapped basslines and funny glasses – and thanks to top-line musicianship, including some help from Fred Wesley, Bootsy avoids any cliches that might have buried this one under the mountain of P-Funk albums hitting the market at the same time. One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Philips (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $16.99
Essential early material by Gal Costa! The record is her first after the immediate Tropicalia years, and it's a stunning blend of styles that seems to draw heavily from changes going on in the American rock scene at the time. The core of the music is still steeped in Brazilian elements – but there's a lot of influences coming into play on the album, like bluesy rock phrasing, showy nostalgia-heavy arrangements, psychedelic production elements, and some of the baroque orchestrations that would show up on Gal's later albums in the 70s. Includes a wonderful version of Caetano's "London London" and "Dixa Sangrar", the moody bossa "Falsa Baiana", Gilberto Gil's "Lingua Do P" and "Mini Misterio", and the tracks "The Archaic Lonely Star Blues", "Love, Try, & Die", and "Hotel Das Estrelas". Hampshire & FoatSaint Lawrence ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
The duo of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat keep on getting more and more interesting as the years go on – to a point where they seem to be carving out a really special place in music that might well be a genre of their own! The music here represents a wonderful evolution of their skills together – sounds that are still steeped in older elements of jazz, funk, and other modes – but which have also taken on a new sort of complexity, yet all without ever losing the organic, immediate approach that makes them so compelling! There's a blend here that's as if an Italian soundtrack of the 70s used spiritual jazz for its instrumentation – long flowing tracks that unfold with a gentle sort of beauty – with Hampshire on guitars and percussion, Foat on organ, guitar, piano, and kalimba – and other instrumentation on bells, gongs, flute, and percussion. Titles include "The Solitude Of Certitudes", "Woody Bay", "Out On The Side", "The Undercliff", "The Snake & The Weasel", and "The Clock Tower". CD

Coleman HawkinsColeman Hawkins & His Orchestra 1954 ... LP
Jazztone/Musidisc (France), 1954. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A great collection of the obscure recordings that Hawk did for the Jazztone label in the mid 50s – sides that were not well packaged at the time, and often get confused with other work recorded for different labels. The tracks capture Hawkins at a wonderful period in his career – almost lost between eras, but playing with a sound and tone that demand immediate attention – and which have a timeless quality that we love even more than his earlier work. There's some slight touches of the modern edge that Hawk would pick up more at the end of the 50s – but mostly, the dominant approach is one that features lush and soulful tenor work – almost perfect, with nary a note out of place! Players include Billy Taylor, Milt Hinton, and Joe Jones on the core group – plus Emmett Berry and Eddie Bert on about half of the album. Titles include "Blue Lou", "If I Had You", "Get Happy", "Just You Just Me", "Cheek To Cheek", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
A seminal set from 70s Pink Floyd – a set that took all the energy of Dark Side Of The Moon, and refined it into an even more complex sonic setting! The songs here move out spaciously – still very unified as an overall album, but often with all of these longer-form musical ideas, and mature textural elements that really show the progression the group had made in just a few short years – almost as if they were revisiting the open-ended feel of their immediate records after the departure of Syd Barrett – but with a massive amount of new information about the possibilities of the recording studio, and their own skills as musicians. The whole thing's wonderful – always taken better as a whole than in just small slices – and titles include "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", "Welcome To The Machine", "Have A Cigar", and "Wish You Were Here". Understated genius from McCoy Tyner – and exactly the sort of record that shows why his catalog is always worth searching out! The album's got a lot more subtlety than his immediate post-Coltrane sides of the 70s – righteousness maybe a bit more on the backburner, but not so much so that the album loses its soul – because even though the title's maybe a bit uptown, the execution's a lot more down to earth – filled with warm changes and sharply personal moments, played by a group that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Antonio Hart on alto, Christian McBride on bass, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Titles include "Contemplation", "For All We Know", "I Will Wait For You", "Smile", "Soul Eyes", "Piano Sonata No 8 In C Minor", and "Prelude In E Minor". CD

An incredibly strong set by McCoy Tyner – one of his best late 60s sides for Blue Note! The album features McCoy working with a larger group that includes Lee Morgan, Julian Priester, James Spaulding, and Bennie Maupin – using the spiritual ensemble mode that would become his greatest contribution to jazz in the immediate post-Coltrane years. Tyner's writing is out front here, and he's laid out some great charts for the group to groove upon – hitting a spiritual vibe that's very much in the mode of music to come on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz in the 70s! RPM (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A really cool collection of British tracks from the mid 90s – music that was initially a big part of the scene at club Smashing – which began with older junkshop/thrift store records, and soon morphed into a cultural force of its own! As such, the tracks here often reference the past in some way, while also sounding very immediate to the British scene of the 90s – and many of the numbers here are from a farther hinterland of indie music, which never got nearly as much circulation over on this side of the Atlantic as some of the bigger Brit names of the time. The whole thing is a surprisingly rich musical discovery from a time we thought we knew well – and the 2CD set features 40 tracks in all, including some unreleased material – work by Powder, Linoleum, Spearmint, Huggy Bear, Heavenly, Peepshow, VA6, We Are Pleb, The High Fidelity, Velocetee, Sexton Ming & Steady, Pram, Mambo Taxi, Bis, Sound 5, The Delgados, and many others! Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. The set features three different live recordings, and one long studio set recorded over two days – a fantastic collection of music. ✨✧ Ted DanielZulu's Ball – Ted Daniel Plays The Music Of King Oliver ... CD
Altura, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Ted Daniel takes on the music of jazz founder King Oliver – but as you'd expect from all of Daniel's other groundbreaking work, the result here is something quite unique! True, the tunes are older numbers from the Oliver songbook of the 20s – but the approach is maybe a bit more freewheeling and pan-historic – a bit like the mode you'd expect if this project was handled by some of the artists on the Black Saint/Soul Note label in the early 80s. As with their work, the immediate approach is historically respectful, but the individual currents in the music really update the sound – thanks to a lineup that includes Daniel on cornet, Charlie Burnham on violin, Newman Baker on percussion, Joe Daley on tuba, and Marvin Sewell on guitar. Titles include "Tears", "Working Man's Blues", "Riverside Blues", "Mabel's Dream", "Just Gone", and "Zulu's Ball" – most taken in much longer readings than recordings from the 78rpm generation. CD

Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
San Francisco is well-known as ground zero for the Summer Of Love – and the city gave us plenty of big bands that helped push the new sounds of the 60s firmly into the rock mainstream – but at the same time, the city also housed plenty of lesser-known acts and really experimental groups who were making some amazing sounds that never fully got their due! This set completely corrects that lack – by digging deep into the SF scene of the late 60s, and coming up with handfuls of fuzzy nuggets that show us that there's still plenty to discover from this ultra-rich moment in music – a time when there was so much greatness going down, even a collection like this only scratches the surface. And yet, that scratch is one hell of a treat – as the whole thing's filled with lots of unissued tracks from back in the day, rare singles, and lots more – all originally produced at Golden State Recorders, and documented here in some very well-done notes. Titles include "Blow Up" by The Goody Box, "Meditorium" by The Carnival, "Start Seeing" by The Short Yellow, "Sunday At The Lotus Parlor" by The Gants, "Chasing Rainbows" by The Bristol Boxkite, "Wet Chant" by The Immediate Family, "Daddy's Zoo" by The Tow Away Zone, "Black Diamonds" by Ticket Agents, "Speed" by Celestial Hysteria, "F*ck For Peace" by Magician, "Don't Worry Me" by The Seventh Dawn, and "My Kind Of People" by Just Slightly Richer. An amazing sonic portrait of the modern city – one created on the early 70s Italian scene, but lost to the shifting sands of time, due to its release as a sound library-only album! We've heard Maria Teresa Luciani on a few other records of this nature – but this one may well be her greatest – music that's beyond categorization in the way it presents its subject – not really jazz or soundtrack styles at all, but also not some sort of too-modern compositional idiom either. Instead, the whole thing seems to make some sort of honest, organic sense – as it presents differing aspects of the city, both residential and commercial, public and private – often with a sense of darkness in the immediate approach, but also with a current of hope at times too. The funk-tinged, pyschedelic soul album from Muddy Waters – one that irritated many a blues purist in its day – but it's finally reaching its earned status as a leftfield gem! You know, in the immediate years after this one (and similar funky blues albums on Chess/Cadet) was released, it was downplayed as a cheap attempt to sell out Muddy's classic blues sound. These days, it's treasured by many of us as a unique funky session that merged the best of Chicago's funk, soul, and blues worlds – taking Muddy's sound way past earlier records and into uncharted waters. It's similar to some of the work on Chess at the time by Bo Diddley and Etta James – and it includes lots of nice updated groovers like "I'm A Man", "I Just Want To Make Love to You", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Same Thing", "She's All Right", and "Tom Cat". This volume is also pretty heavy with instrumentals, but there's some standout vocal tunes, too – with numbers by Los Destellos, Compay Quinto, Los Yungas, Grupo Celeste, Juaneco Y Su Combo, Los Demonios Del Mantaro, Los Ecos, Los Beta 5, Los Orientales De Paramonga and many more. Comes with a nice little booklet of photos, with notes in both Spanish and English. 34 tracks including "Mi Choza, Mi Chacra Y Mi Mujer" by Manzanita, "Boogaloo Del Perro" by Los Destellos, "Baila Flaquita Baila" by Los Ecos, "Illimana" by Los 5 Palomiullas, "Recordando A Fachin" by Juaneco Y Su Combo, "Sin Exito" by Grupo Celeste, "Selva, Selva" by Juanaco Y Su Combo, "Colegiala" by Los Ilusionistas, "El Panadero" by Los Beta 5, "Peti Pan" by Los Demonios Del Mantaro and many more. ✨✧ Erykah BaduBaduizm ... CD
Universal, 1997. Used ... $1.99
A landmark debut from the mighty Erykah Badu – a record that really set the world on fire when it first appeared – and which continues to blow our minds all these many years later! There's a simple, straightforward grace to the album that comes through immediately – as Erykah tries to forge new ground for soul music, but does it by taking a few steps backwards – not into retro modes, but more in a way that focuses on the core vocal, songcraft, and right instrumentation that can make a special soul record such a standout. She does a great job of both avoiding easy commercial paths, or some of the temptations to embrace other then-contemporary genres – which has made the work of some of her colleagues seem a bit dated. The record defines a whole new style of expression – "Baduizm", if you will – one in which Erykah sings with a depth that stretches back through a century's worth of jazz, soul, and gospel influences – but works a groove in a stripped-down and forward-thinking mode that sets the pace for countless Neo Soul singers to come! Titles include "Certainly (Flipped It)", "Next Lifetime (radio)", "On & On", "Appletree", "No Love", "4 Leaf Clover", and "Sometimes (mix #9)". CD

Tina BrooksWaiting Game (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... On December 11, 2020
Wonderful! This is the fourth session that tenorist Tina Brooks cut for Blue Note – and it's finally getting reissued! The material did appear briefly in the Tina Brooks box set on Mosaic, but it went out of print immediately, and has never before been presented with a proper cover. It's been appropriately titled Waiting Game, because of the four albums that Brooks recorded for Blue Note, only one (True Blue) was ever issued during his life. The release of this 4th album is a joyous occasion – not only because Brooks is in excellent form on tenor, playing with a warm soulful sound that certainly deserved more credit – but also because the session features a great cast like Johnny Coles, Wilbur Ware, Kenny Drew, and Philly Joe Jones. Tracks include "David The King", "Dhyana", "Talkin About", and "The Waiting Game". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chuck Brown & The Soul SearchersBustin' Loose ... LP
Source, 1979. Very Good ... $8.99
Chuck Brown and his Soul Searchers group are past the arch jazzy funk of their days on Sussex Records – and they're heading more towards that ensemble sound that would drive the DC Go Go scene in the early 80s. The formula is heard to best effect on the big hit "Bustin Loose", an old school party funk jam that you'll probably recognize immediately – and which put Chuck and the group firmly back on the map for another few years! The group also does a pretty good remake of "If It Ain't Funky", which was on one of the earlier Soul Searchers albums – and the album includes the original cuts "Gotcha Now" and "Game Seven". RGE/Audio Clarity (UK), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The debut of a legend – Chico Buarque's first album for RGE, and a groundbreaking batch of tunes that helped shape the sound of popular music in Brazil for years to come! Buarque predates the Tropicalia era, but is working here in a style that clearly allowed for their later impact – a mode that draws on styles from bossa, folklore, and samba – but which somehow manages to rise into a groove that's all its own. Buarque's genius can immediately be summed up in classics on the set – like "Pedro Pedreiro", "A Rita", "Tem Mais Samba", "A Banda", and "Ole Ola" – all wonderful numbers that make the album an essential one in any collection! One of the great lost psych albums on late 60s Elektra Records – a set that's maybe got enough power and majesty to stand next to contemporaneous label releases by Love and The Doors! Like both of those groups, Clear Light have a vision here that's completely their own – a sound that steps out immediately to let you know that they're not just another copycat combo from the garage underground, and instead have this vivid new message that demands to be heard – unabashedly forward in its conception, and with a surprisingly sinister edge – yet all without any sense of being too full of itself either! A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The "My Brazil" reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D'Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that's immediately infectious. The CD's only got 5 tracks – but every track's a winner, and the album's a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! David GrubbsVoice In The Headphones ... Book
Duke University Press, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 21.95
Groundbreaking work from David Grubbs – a name you might know from his decades as a musician, singer, and improviser in a variety of settings – or from his more recent emergence as an author – heard from here in a book that unifies both sides of his creative personality! In some ways, the volume follows the territory of Grubbs' previous Now That The Audience Is Assembled – in that it, like that book, is a mixture of prose and poetry, meditating on the role of a central figure in a creative environment. But this time around, the approach is more personal, and less fantastical – and really gets at the heart of the author's many years of experience in the process of making a recording – but in a way that's very different than any other sort of "behind the glass window" sort of project. At a surface level, the book's about the process of recording an album – but immediately, the whole thing unfolds with the complexity of a recorded work itself – a beautiful merging of writing on music and the practice of music itself – at once poetic, but also very down to earth. 146 pages, softcover. Pretty great later work from Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks – not the immediately-retro style of their earlier albums, but instead this wonderful blend of so many different jazz and acoustic elements – set forward with a style that's wonderfully groovy overall! There's a hip, scatting vibe to the music that almost puts Hicks in the same 70s territory as Ben Sidran – although maybe a few notches earlier in terms of his inspirations – yet coming across with a breezy warmth that's really beautiful, almost like the shift that Maria Muldaur had made from her trad styles of the 60s to the groove of "Midnight At The Oasis". Fender Rhodes warms the record up at all the right moments – and titles include "Boogaloo Jones", "Cruzin", "Garden In The Rain", "Dizzy Dogs", "Vinnie's Lookin Good", "Lovers For Life", and "Collared Blues". Not the Bob Marley of the famous Island Records years in the 70s, but instead the originator from a few years before – heard here on an excellent collection of early work with The Wailers! The style here is maybe more in line with some of the soul-inspired harmony trios to emerge in Kingston during the second half of the 60s – but already, there's a special sort of vibe to these cuts – especially in the way that Marley's immediately emerged as a hell of a songwriter, with a righteous style that's all his own! The vocals of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer are fantastic, too – and production is either by the group, or important studio talents like Lee Perry or Leslie Kong. The 24 track set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "Nice Time", "This Train", "Mr Chatterbox", "Wisdom", "Soul Shakedown Party", "Do It Twice", "Soul Captives", "Mellow Mood", "Duppy Conqueror", "My Cup", "No Water", "Small Axe", "Kaya", "Sun Is Shining", "Concrete Jungle", "Lively Up Yourself", "Trench Town Rock", "Who Is Mr Brown", and "Long Long Winter" – the last of which is a great remake of a Curtis Mayfield tune! Primitive genius from the mighty Monks – their early demos for tracks that would eventually be ignited and explode on record for the uber-essential Black Monk Time LP and others – including the pre-Monks single by The 5 Torquays – issued properly in full for the first time ever by Light In The Attic! The thing that knocked us out about the Early Years compilation almost immediately is how sharp and clear the sound is – you never know the recording quality you'll get with the word "demo" in the title, but this stuff sounds great – secondly, the tracks demonstrate just how fierce these dudes were early on! The eerie organ, tribal thump of the drums, fuzzed out guitar and sneering vocals are in full glory here. This is a necessary set for longtime fans and would even serve a solid into to the uninitiated – and Light In The Attic has done an impeccable job with the booklet, photos and overall presentation. Pure greatness! A stunning 70s set by the New York Jazz Quartet – a group you might not recognize immediately by name, but which features some key all-star players – a lineup that includes Frank Wess on flutes and saxes, Roland Hanna on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Richard Pratt on drums! Wess is especially amazing – very different than his reedman styles of earlier decades – both in small combos and larger ensembles, with an especially strong sensitivity on the flute – an instrument he always played famously, but which he really seems to feel here – with energy that really augments the sorts of warmth and lyricism that Hanna can bring to the piano when he's at his best. Plus, there's this deeper core of rhythm at some points, which really seems to give both Roland and Frank a vibe that really does them better than usual – on titles that include "Tee Piece", "Surge", "Placitude", "87th Street", and "Big Bad Henry". Brownswood (UK), 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.98
A fantastic jazz group from the contemporary South African scene – one who've got a very righteous vibe, and a sound that's maybe even more far-reaching than any jazz we've heard from that scene back in the 60s or 70s! The group's led by Shabaka Hutchings on tenor, but is a very collaborative ensemble – with these tremendous upfront vocals from Siyabonga Mthembu, a singer with a very unique approach, and a spiritual current that we'd rank right up there with work by Leon Thomas, Dwight Trible, or Joe Lee Wilson, even though Mthembu's very much his own man. The group's also got two other great horn players – Mthunzi Mvubu on alto and Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet – plus Fender Rhodes and piano from Nduduzo Makhathini, and a wonderfully early array of bass, percussion, and drums – which lay down a fantastic groundwork for each tune. The music starts somewhere in the spiritual territory of the post-Coltrane scene – but really takes off immediately with its own individual spirit – ala Kamasai Washington – and the performance is live and unadorned, without some of the studio efforts that show up on other Brownswood label releases. Beautiful work throughout – an instant classic that we'd rank right up there with the best material by folks like Nat Birchall or Matthew Hallsall, but very different too. Number two from Silhouette Brown – every bit worth the 6 year wait we've had since their first album! The sound here is even more deep than before – not just a 4 Hero offshoot, but a complex bit of cosmic soul that shows that the 21st Century spirit is alive and well, if you just know where to look! Lady Alma handles lead vocals on all tracks – and gets tremendous musical backings from Kaidi Tatham and Dego – lots of bristling beats and jazzy keyboards, all fused together with a subtle sensibility that's really wonderful – almost a bridge between London experimentation and American underground soul, yet with a flavor that's all its own – that beautiful sound we immediately loved on Silhouette Brown's first album, equally wicked here as well. David Toop & Paul BurwellWounds ... LP
Quartz/Song Cycle (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A fantastic set of music from the young David Toop – a package that comes from tapes of improvisations with percussionist Paul Burwell – who plays "a variety of percussion arranged on the floor, and in a kit, most of which fell over immediately prior to this performance"! That kind of statement on the cover really gives a great idea of the spirit of the set – an "anything goes" effort in pursuit of sonic experimentation – as Toop handles a wide variety of sounds on guitar, flutes, and "home made and found stuff" – plus water, noise, rubbish, and small explosives – all then taken back to his studio and edited together to create this record. The whole thing's a great precursor to a contemporary world in which jazz recordings allow for a lot more edit and production after a live performance – but there are also more subtle elements that tie the record more to the Incus generation of British improvisation too. The cover looks gothic, but the sound is plenty darn groovy – a sweet set of sound library instrumentals from the 70s scene in Paris – most of them served up with an upbeat, clubby sort of vibe! Yan Tregger may not be one of those names that immediately comes to the lips of underground club collectors – but there's plenty of great clubby moments here, with grooves that bubble on tight basslines, swing with sweet keyboards, and often get lots of riffing guitar in the mix! Yet there's also some nicely weird touches too – as you might expect from a record that was cut far from the mainstream, as part of a studio library set – the kind of weird funky elements you might find on some of the more obscure 12" singles from the late 70s underground. Titles include "Carry On", "Gimmicky", "Sunny Wing", "Light Heart (parts 1 & 2)", "Riff On", "Lyric Soul", "Slow Zoom", and "This Time". CD

Atlantic, 1955. Very Good- ... $11.99
Darkly imaginative work from the great Lennie Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! The record features the incredible track "Turkish Mambo" – which has Tristano overdubbed 3 times in this dark modal way that's totally amazing, and which will hook you into his playing immediately! A number of other tracks feature a quartet with Lee Konitz – always a good match for Tristano – and a few others have a great trio that's completed by Peter Ind and Jeff Morton. Tracks include "Requiem", "East 32nd", "You Go To My Head", and "Line Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Weather ReportHeavy Weather ... CD
CBS, 1977. Used ... $2.99
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler". A fantastic debut from Chicago soul singer Jamila Woods – the kind of artist that makes us very proud to be located in the Windy City! Woods is an extremely inventive lyricist – strongly inspired by poetry, but also immediately trying to communicate in a wider spectrum with her sound – at a level that's maybe even smarter and more sophisticated than you'd guess from her look on the cover, which might make you think that she's just another pretty face in mainstream music! RCA (Japan), 1982. Used ... $19.99
A seminal classic from vocalist Michael Wycoff – thanks to some killer help from Webster Lewis – who not only produced the album, but also plays keyboards on the set! The album's got a bounce and bubble that's right up there with Lewis' best from the late 70s – but thanks to some rich vocals from Wycoff, it's also got a bit more depth too – especially on some of the mellower groovers which really sparkle wonderfully! Some moments are upbeat, others are nicely laidback – and Wycoff's rich range is given some great focus here, in a balance that makes for one hell of a great record all the way through. Titles include the stellar stepper "Looking Up To You", one of those anthemic cuts you'll recognize immediately – plus "Diamond Real", "Still Got The Magic", "Love Is So Easy", and "Love Conquers All". A mad return to form for Tom Ze – the legendary Brazilian musician who's been one of the few artists to keep the flag of Tropicalia flying over the years! The set features Tom in a number of styles – rocky, quirky, folksy, electric, and always with that mad sense of humor that makes his work so enjoyable. A few of the tunes on the set were recorded live, and there's a pronounced political nature to much of the material – a fact that's immediately apparent on the anti-war track "Companheiro Bush", but which bubbles nicely through most of the album as well. Cherry Red (UK), 1978. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
The title's maybe a bit misleading – as most folks think of day-glo as a color associated with some of the most throwaway culture of the 80s – but the brightness of the hue definitely marks the big explosion in styles during the key British year of 1978 – a time when the punk revolution of 1977 opened the door for a big range of modes to follow! It might be said that the post-punk years came immediately after the initial days of punk – and they definitely begin here, as hard and fast modes are mixed with more unusual styles that include mod revival moments, electronic experiments, and even some offbeat pop – expressions of humor, anger, and a shifting political landscape – served up as an amazing document of the creative intensity of the time! As with other Cherry Red boxes, the overall package is great – a huge amount of notes to support the 79 tracks within – a diverse array of music from Blue Steam, The Others, UK Subs, The Jam, Monochrome Set, Wreckless Eric, Spizzoil, Public Image Ltd, 999, The Stranglers, Japan, The Only Ones, Magazine, Alternative TV, Slush, Time Machine, Eater, The Bozos, Tyla Gang, Ed Banger, No Sweat, The VIPs, John Cooper Clarke, Scritti Politti, Penetration, Stiff Little Fingers, Alberto Y Los Trios Paranoias, Teardrops, Coventry Automatics, Menace, Bleach Boys, Jilted John, Zones, Electric Chairs, and many more! A great set of spacey jazzy grooves – and a rare album that was deleted immediately from the Acid Jazz catalog due to some copyright troubles! The album's quite different than a lot of the other ones on the Acid Jazz label – with a spacey soul sound that's a sweet blend of classic 70s jazz funk and headier 90s influences – all wrapped up in a groove that's super tight, and a sound that should have made these guys huge! Features the amazing cut "Millenium" – with soulful vocals, spacey production, and bubbling under electronics, which gives the cut a sound that's almost up there with 70s work by Larry Mizell! An incredible batch of Brazilian grooves – a rare Mexican album cut by Luiz Eca of the Tamba Trio, featuring early work by Claudio Roditi, Nana Vasconcelos, and Joyce! The sound is a swirling mix of late bossa and the baroque grooves that were coming out of Brazil at the end of the 60s – deeply jazzy, with some nice soulful touches – and very strong use of voices and instruments together in one sweeping sound that's immediately captivating! The whole thing's great – a lost recording that only saw the light of day briefly in the late 70s, and which is finally getting a proper release today. Fantastic early work by Ivan Lins! The record is totally unlike his later work – and is a stunning mix of baroque pop arrangements and Brazilian rhythms, with a god-like sense of pop presentation that places Lins right up there with Euro greats like Scott Walker or Jacques Brel. Issued in the wake of the Tropicalia era, the record's almost a return to more exploration of baroque ideals within Brazilian songwriting, without sacrificing the sense of playful exploration that had come to the music in recent years. Lins voice is incredible, with slight hints of jazz that will creep up more strongly in his later work – and a strong way of phrasing that goes past the overdramatic style of earlier Brazilian singers, with a confidence and maturity that are immediately infectious. Titles include "Que Pena Que Eu Tenho De Voce", "Deixa O Trem Seguir", "Catedral", "Oba", "Oratorio No Mar Branco", and "Me Deixa Em Paz". Lesser-known work by Love – recorded immediately after the group's seminal records on Elektra, with a slightly different sound! The CD brings together tracks from the albums Out Here and False Start – both of which feature the band moving back to basics, working in a harder rocking style that has less of the baroque arrangements of albums like Da Capo or Forever Changes. Arthur Lee's still as incredible as ever – with that slightly mad vocal approach that gives even the most mundane tunes a real edge – and the guitar work's supported by an even heavier style of rhythm, one that almost gives a few tracks some nice funky moments. CD features 14 tracks in all, including "Gimi A Little Break", "Nice To Be", "Listen To My Song", "I'll Pray For You", "Love Is Coming", "Signed DC", "Gather Round", and "Love Is More Than Words Or Better Late Than Never". A fantastic record – one of the best jazz vocal records of the 80s, and a real bright spot in an often dim decade for jazz! The set is Carmen Lundy's debut – and it's a masterful self-produced effort that immediately put her in the ranks of the ultra-hip, ultra-soulful jazz crowd – singers like Betty Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater, both of whom took a lot longer to sound this good than Carmen! The record is set in a perfect setting – Carmen working closely with musicians headed up by brother Curtis on bass, and including soulful players like Bobby Watson, Rene McLean, Cecil Bridgewater, Jon Faddis, and Harry Whitaker. The whole thing's great – the kind of righteous vocal set that few singer ever seem to make this well – and titles include some great originals like "Good Morning Kiss", "Time is Love", and "Perfect Stranger" – plus excellent versions of "Dindi", "Love For Sale", and "The Lamp Is Low". Later work by Pharoah Sanders – and an overlooked set that's filled with some pretty nice material! The group features electric piano by Donald Smith and acoustic piano by William Henderson – and the groove is a mixture of spiritual soul jazz with a few more standard numbers that differ from Pharoah's albums on Impulse. At the best moments, Pharoah is blowing with all his classic magic – crafting the sort of long and raspy lines that always grab us immediately, as the rhythm section comps out modally behind him, setting up a soulfully swinging groove. Highlights include a version of Coltrane's "Equinox", done in a building modal way that stays very faithful to the original, and a long version of "Out Of This World", one that runs for 14 minutes, building into a straight jazz groove that layers sound upon sound upon sound. Fantastic French femmes from the 60s – and a great illustration of the way that girl power really took over the sound of the Parisian scene at the time! These tunes have a punch that few American or British tracks of the period could ever hope to match – a way of staying sweet, yet really hitting hard with a groove – sometimes with fuzzy guitars or organ, sometimes with a fuller blast of orchestrations – always completely charming and immediately appealing – even if you can't understand the lyrics! Most numbers feature work by some top-shelf arrangers from the tight Parisian scene – including Alain Goraguer, Jacques Denjean, Michel Colombier, and Ivan Julien – and titles include "Le Coeur Au Bout Des Doights" by Jacqueline Taieb, "Laisser Tomber Les Filles" by France Gall, "Voila" by Francois Hardy, "Il Suffit D'Un Jour" by Liz Brady, "L'Adorable Femme Des Neiges" by Christie Laume, "Impatiente" by Les Gams, and "Les Filles C'Est Fait Pour Faire L'Amore" by Charlotte Leslie. Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Do yourself a favor, and buy this album – you won't be disappointed! The record is a gem all the way through – a really unique mixture of LA soul jazz and African rhythms, with a sound that's almost like Hugh Masekela sitting in with the Jazz Crusaders! Of course, there's a lot of Jazz Crusaders in the set – as Wilton Felder plays electric bass on the album, giving it a fantastic loping groove – but there's also plenty of unique albums on the record, especially its way of approaching the rhythms with a sly, syncopated groove that's immediately infectious! Duke's trumpet solos are great, and they're augmented by tenor work by Chester Washington and trombone by George Bohannon – all nicely grooving on the album's brilliant blend of jazzy tracks. Fantastic later work from two players who always sound wonderful together – maybe best known for their duet performances on FMP at the end of the 80s, but really reprising that beautiful energy here on two long improvisations recorded in 2011! Both the piano of Cecil Taylor and drums of Tony Oxley have all the dynamic qualities of the past – but there's also this warmth that comes as a real surprise – this deeper tone at times from Taylor, as if he's playing more on the left side of the piano – and a resonance from both instruments that maybe shows a maturity that brings out even more beauty in their work together than before! The quality is a bit hard to put in words, but it's immediately apparent upon listening – that special sort of magic that makes an improvised performance so great. CD

A really great record – one we're surprised that we like so much! On the surface, the album appears to be an inconsequential 80s session by three older giants of their instrument – Woods on alto, Flanagan on piano, and Mitchell on bass. But Woods' tone here, although played straightly, is fantastic – with an edge that grabs you immediately, holding your ears throughout the session with a bright yet sad approach that matches the sound he gets on a rare few albums when he's really doing things right. We've loved the music of Shaun Escoffery for many years now – right from that time when he emerged from the UK scene as key talent in the Omar generation – the kind of strong songwriting voice and confident singer that really helped mark a difference from the world of soul in the US! Escoffery has evolved wonderfully over the course of his superb recordings – and here, he continues to grow even more – coming on strong, and maybe with more of a 60s soul inspiration than ever before – kind of a romping, vibrant approach to the music that echoes the Motown generation, while still also sounding immediately contemporary, and graced with a production style that maybe makes Shaun's vocals sound even more powerful than ever! The first album by The Tom Tom Club – a group that started out as a side project by Talking Heads members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz – but which went onto have a surprising life of its own! Like the Talking Heads at the start of the 80s, Tom Tom Club were very open to pulling together rhythms from the soulful underground – bits of Caribbean influence and certainly some sounds from hip hop too – but used in these cool sing-songy tunes that also had ties to the same New York underground scene that gave the world ESG and Liquid Liquid! Yet there's also a nicely complex set of textures, too – thanks to work on the record by Adrian Belew and Steve Stanley – both of whom can balance out funky elements and more interesting textures. The record took off immediately with the track "Genius Of Love" – inspired by hip hop, and respected by that scene too – as was the album's classic "Wordy Rappinghood". After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of spirituality that runs deeper than previously expressed. The key track in this vision is his brilliant modal number "Maiden Voyage" – one of those tunes that sounded totally fresh immediately, and which was picked up by many others as a jazz anthem during the 60s. The rest of the album's equally great – and features George Coleman on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all making for a very hip lineup that really lets Herbie open up stylistically! Other titles include "Dolphin Dance", "Little One", and an original version of "Survival Of The Fittest". CD

✨✧ Robert Harshorn Shimshak (ed)Bill Owens – Leisure (hardcover) ... Book
Fotofolio, 2004. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Images of America at play in the early 70s – all shot by photographer Bill Owens in Northern California, and brought together as a really beautiful document of the time! As with Owens' Working book, this one features a huge range of different subjects – golfers, dirt bikers, movie goers, boat enthusiasts, and more – each of whom are shot in ways that are a mixture of modern portraiture and candid shots – often with a snippet from each subject describing their relationship to the activity. Words hardly do the book justice – just a few inside pages will have you immediately hooked – and the hardcover book is 120 pages, with most images in black and white, and a few in color.
