AtmosphereYou Can't Imagine The Fun We're Having (with poster & download) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2005. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
Atmosphere's hard hitting, tightly focused You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having – one of their best ever! Tracks like the opener "The Arrival", "Panic Attack" (a blistering affront to an over-prescribed populace) and "Bam" hit hard with Ant's gritty soul and rock beats and Slug's busy, in the pocket rhymes, and find these guys working tightly as a singular force with a mesmerizing intensity. Lyrics-wise, this record is a pretty remarkable step up – and a peak effort for Atmosphere and the Rhymesayers label. Other titles include "Watch Out", "Smart Went Crazy", "Musical Chairs", "Angelface", "Get Fly" and "Little Man". LP, Vinyl record album

John LennonImagine (40th Anniversary box set with Imagine Sessions 12 inch, poster and post cards) (Record Store Day Black Friday Release) ... LP
Apple, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP ... $59.99
An amazing limited box set release of John Lennon's Imagine – issued as a special 40th Anniversary package, and even cooler than the original release back in the 70s! The white box has a great cover image of John at the piano, with Yoko sitting nearby – and contains 2LPs, on 180 gram white vinyl – plus a poster and postcards as well! The core album is Imagine, of course – the most consistent of John's post-Beatles albums, and just about as essential as they come. Co-produced by Phil Spector, yet it's often not as grandly orchestrated as a Wall Of Sound effort, and well tailored to Lennon's songs – which include "Give Me Some Truth", "Oh My Love", "How Do You Sleep", "Imagine", "Crippled Inside", "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier". The second LP features Imagine Sessions material – early versions of "Baby Please Don't Go", "Imagine", "How Do You Sleep", "Jealous Love", "Oh My Love", and "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier". ✨✧ John LennonImagine ... CD
Apple, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the out there primal scream of Plastic Ono, and more of an impeccably produced, easy to love landmark from John Lennon! The title track, beautiful as it is, is so heavily ingrained into rock & roll myth making machine that it's become too easy to overlook how great most of the songs on the album are. It must be the most consistent of John's LPs post-Beatles, and it's just about as essential as they come. Co-produced by Phil Spector, yet it's often not as grandly orchestrated as a Wall Of Sound effort, and well tailored to Lennon's songs. ✨✧ Jo RipponArt Of Protest (hardcover) ... Book
Imagine, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful book that's perhaps more important now than it was when first published – a full color presentation of protest posters throughout the 20th Century – leading up to some fantastic images from more recent years too! The surprising thing about the book is that the issues haven't changed at all – as so many of these posters deal with class struggle, racial equality, human rights, and other fights that are still being fought around the globe by younger generations today. The posters are extremely powerful, and go way past more familiar modes of expression – with many served up on oversized full page representations, next to some smaller images, always with text and other historical details. 175 pages, hardcover, and in full color throughout. A killer, one time promo-only CD EP circulated ahead of Atmosphere's mid 00s classic You Can't Imagine The Fun We're Having LP – with alternate versions of "Say Hey There" and "Panic Attack", plus some equally dope tracks that strong enough to deserve a spot a proper LP. Atmosphere at a creative peak, on cuts crafted to stand the test of time. They avoided trends in '05 and just did their own thing. Wise move, this is as fresh as ever. John Cage/Lukas FossConcerto For Prepared Piano & Orchestra/ Baroque Variations ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $4.99
Nice 1968 recordings of works by Cage and Lukas Foss. The Cage "Concerto For Prepared Piano" is performed by Yuji Takahashi on a prepared piano, as the main soloist with a larger ensemble. The sound is as you'd imagine from Cage's prepared piano stuff, with lots of cool off-kilter piano lines. Foss' "Baroque Variations" is performed by a cool little ensemble that includes both traditional instruments and modern ones like electric guitar, piano, and organ. They get a sound that's pretty cool, and the "variations" are interpretations of works by Handel, Scarlatti, and Bach. LP, Vinyl record album

Candi Cane CrewSouth Beach Christmas ... CD
Nu York Disco/Essential, 2017. New Copy ... $2.99 14.99
Christmas happens all around the globe, even in spots where the snowfall is light, and a White Christmas is unlikely to happen – and while we're not entirely sure this is the way they celebrate the holiday on the South Beach of Miami, Dio and the Candi Cane Crew try to imagine what such a celebration might sound like! The approach here is electro soul with gentle bass – mostly using familiar Christmas tunes, reworked with a mode that's almost that crossover holiday soul style from the late 80s – but with the inclusion of a few new raps by group members from time to time. Titles include versions of "Frosty The Snowman", "Jingle Bells", "Sleigh Ride", "Last Christmas", "Santa Baby", "Let It Snow", and "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". CD

✨✧ CandidoBeautiful ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful bit of Latin funk – and one of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Candido! The album's one of the first that has Candido stepping out of the straighter Latin jazz mode of earlier years – working with a funky lineup of players arranged by the mad genius Joe Cain, and going for a mixed electric/acoustic sound that reminds us of Mongo Santamaria's best work – only a heck of a lot funkier! In addition to killer conga licks from Candi, the album features some really heavy guitar and organ lines, plus some good choppy sax work – wailing away with a really solid soulful sound. Imagine Booker T & The MGs working in Spanish Harlem – and you've got part of the picture of this one! Titles include "I'm On My Way", "Tic Tac Toe", "Serenade To A Savage", and the great "Ghana Spice (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

Don CherryOm Shanti Om ... CD
Black Sweat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare 70s work from Don Cherry, and one of the most perfect realizations of his organic music concept – a quartet session recorded for Italian broadcast, with long songs that have a very spun-out, meditative vibe! Cherry's on pocket trumpet, but is way more than a horn player – as his vocalizations and spirit really guide the whole proceedings – played by a quartet that features Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, Gian Piero Pramaggiore on guitar, and Moki on tanpura! As you can imagine from the mix of instruments, there's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole set – really special sounds that come together with a natural beauty that may well make the record one of Don's most spiritual performances of the 70s – and that's really saying a lot. Titles include "Koye", "Flute Song", "Dissolution", "Nana's Solo", "Om Shanti Om", Luna Turca", and "Chenrezig". CD

Miles Davis/Thelonious MonkMiles & Monk At Newport ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1958/1963. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
A slightly misleading record – but a great one nonetheless! From the title and cover, you might imagine that Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis were sharing the stage together at the Newport Jazz Festival – but instead, the album actually features separate performances by each artist – actually even recorded 5 years apart! The Miles Davis recording is from 1958 – a great year that has John Coltrane working with the group, alongside Wynton Kelly on piano, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – performing lively versions of "Ah Leu Cha", "Straight No Chaser", "Fran Dance" and "Two Bass Hit". The Monk material is even more unique – recorded in 1963, with Monk's usual quartet of Charlie Rouse on tenor, Butch Warren on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – joined by the legendary Pee Wee Russell on clarinet – recently revived in jazz at the time, and displaying surprisingly modernist tendencies! Both Monk tracks are long – and include versions of "Nutty" and "Blue Monk". CD

DioLast In Line (picture disc) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Warner, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
The second of Dio's twin masterpieces – a second album knockout that followed Holy Diver by a single year! The biggest difference this time out is the addition of full time keyboard player Claude Schnell to the band, making Dio a quintet – but what the keyboards do NOT do is air out the heaviness. This remains a headbanging classic, with songs as heavy as any in the Dio canon. Like they did on Holy Diver, the band balances a melodic sensibility with heavy rock in a way that would prove hugely influential – we can't imagine the quietly melodic to massively heavy transitions on Metallica's Master Of Puppets LP could've been what they are without the opening minute of the title track here, but this whole thing is a win – with "We Rock", "Mystery", Breathless", "I Speed At Night", "One Night In The City", "Evil Eyes", "Eat Your Heart Out" and "Egypt (The Chains Are On)". Joe FarrellLa Catedral Y El Toro ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A mix of Latin modes and soulful fusion grooves – both of which make for an excellent album from the post-CTI years of reedman Joe Farrell! Joe plays soprano, tenor, and flute on the record – always with that well-crafted groove he first brought to jazz back in the 60s, working in a more modern context – still sounding wonderfully fresh here in the larger backdrops of a record like this – definitely a cut above most mainstream artists of his nature! Production is by Ralph MacDonald and William Eaton, with a great blend of soul and jazz – and all cuts are instrumental, with help from players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Titles include "Promise Me Your Love", "La Catedral Y El Toro", "Disco Dust", "Cyclone Rider", "Is It Asking Too Much", and "Imagine Me". CD

Lee Fields & The ExpressionsIt Rains Love (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 16.99
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". CD features the bonus track "Don't Give Up" – and 2CD version features a full bonus album of instrumentals by Leon Michels and the group! CD

Amaro FreitasRasif ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A whole new flavor of Brazilian jazz – served up by pianist Amaro Freitas, whose work on the Pernambuco scene is a great cross-crossing of modes! Freitas has all the fluid, modern elements of some of the better-known Brazilian pianists from Rio and Sao Paulo – but he also mixes in some rootsier elements to his music – still using conventional jazz instrumentation, but with lots of complexity in the rhythms – so much so, it's really hard to put an sort of easy label on his approach! The work of bassist Jean Elton and drummer Hugo Medeiros is equally great – and the trio cascade together in a way that we can't imagine any other group matching at all. A few tracks feature sax and flute from Henrique Albino – but the core trio dominates in a mighty nice way – on titles that include "Aurora", "Mantra", "Rasif", "Afrocatu", "Vitrais", "Dona Eni", and "Trupe". Al GreenAl Green Gets Next To You ... LP
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 18.99
Al Green's first major album, and a killer batch of Memphis soul tracks with a sound that's a bit rawer than later years. The formula for the hits is firmly in place – and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in very sympathetic production by the great Willie Mitchell. Although Mitchell had worked fine on his own before the record, it's his work with Green that really pushes him to the top of the soul hall of fame – as it's hard to imagine how anyone could have come up with a better showcase for Al's amazing voice. Proof of this can be heard on the record's great original tunes by Green – like "All Because", "I'm A Ram", "You Say It", and the classic "Tired Of Being Alone" – as well as on covers like "Driving Wheel", "Can't Get Next To You", and "Light My Fire". Maybe the title's a bit overly-optimistic – but with a record like this, you can certainly imagine a world in which everybody does like Hampton Hawes! The record's the third in a legendary early run for the Contemporary label – trio material that broke Hawes out of the box and firmly put his rich talents on the keys at the top of the list of the best players in jazz. The sound's an amazing blend of jazz idioms at the time – with some of the flourishes of the Peterson or Jamal crowd, but often a tighter, almost rootsier bottom in the rhythms – a touch of the LA soul jazz sound, showing up here quite early! The trio features Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums – and tracks are short, but showcase the open sound that Hawes was developing at the time. Norma's got a sound that's richer than most of her east coast contemporaries – a really robust approach that's almost more like some of the best southern soul singers of the period, and captured beautifully here, in ways that make us wonder why she never recorded more albums after this. The set's put together by producer George Kerr, right in the middle of a rich run of work for other artists in the 70s – and arrangements are by Bert Keyes and Andrew Smith – balancing equally between midtempo groovers, and some mellow tracks that are especially great. A brilliant later set from Lee Konitz – recorded for Blue Note, after many years of Lee's mighty talents being ignored by US labels! Konitz first rose up as a modernist in the postwar years, recorded important records for Atlantic, Verve, Prestige, and other labels – then mostly gave his gifts to the overseas market during the 70s, and especially the 80s. Yet during that time, he grew tremendously as a player – something that's almost hard to imagine given the genius of his youth – and received this excellent showcase courtesy of bassist Charlie Haden, who co-produced with Lee, and plays in the trio alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. The format is open and fluid – never too free, but with that exploratory vibe that Konitz and the rest of the Tristano school opened up in the 50s. The record's got Chien Chien ringing out on these bold, well-placed notes – recording in Brooklyn, and hitting a sound that's up there with the best of the contemporary NY scene, but with some nice echoes of the past in the way she uses the vibes – full, rich, and very soulful. The rest of the group features work from Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, and Shdrick Mitchell on piano and organ – and in addition to a killer remake of "We Live In Brooklyn", the set features tunes that include "The Imaginary Enemy", "Blossom In A Stormy Night", "Blue In Green", "Invitation", "Tears & Love", and "Mo Better Blues". A beautiful album of spiritual jazz flute tracks – one of the few self-released classics by the legendary Lloyd McNeill, a player who's never really gotten his due! The album's got a warm soulful sparkle that brings together Latin and Brazilian touches with McNeill's own lyrical style – definitely in the mode of 70s spiritualists like Harold Vick or Sonny Fortune. McNeill's in the lead on flute, and most of the tracks have Dom Salvador on piano, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Buster Williams on bass. Aum Fidelity, 2018. Used 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A really wonderful collection of music from the legendary bassist William Parker – and one that finally brings a light to an under-illuminated side of his talents – his work with different singers over his long and creative career, all collected together here in a great 3CD set! Make no mistake – this isn't a "best of", or anything like that – as a good deal of music appears here for the first time ever, and lots more of the tracks are from albums that have long vanished from the record racks – which makes the whole thing almost like a new album from Parker overall. Players include Parker on bass, Yuko Fujiyama and Eri Yamamoto on piano, Rob Brown on alto, Steve Swell on trombone, and a number of others – including nearly a full disc with music by Parker's Orchestra – and as you'd imagine, the mood and style varies a bit from track to track, but is all wonderfully tied together by Parker's detailed notes inside. Singers include Leena conquest, Ernie Odom, Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay, Lisa Skolov, Ellen Christi, Mola Sylla, Andrea Wolper, Fay Victor, and Omar Payano – and the set is an incredible testimony to Parker's great talents. This is the one that really nailed it for Jaco Pastorious – a brilliant showcase for all his many talents on the bass, and a key illustration of the way that he influenced an entire generation! Sure, Jaco in Weather Report was already pretty darn great – but here, on his own, he really gets to sparkle – jamming hard with heavyweights on some funky numbers, sliding out in spacey territory on mellow cuts, and even trying out a few more experimental moments that are far beyond what most other bassists might imagine for a debut of this nature. Players on the date include Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Don Alias on percussion, Lenny White on drums, Hubert Laws on flute, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – and titles include "Portrait Of Tracy", "Donna Lee", "Continuum", "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Kuru/Speak Like a Child", "Opus Pocus", and "Come On Come Over". Return To Forever Live – a vastly-extended exploration of this legendary 70s group at their best! The triple-length package offers the ensemble plenty of room to open things up – long tracks that stretch out with the boundless energy that Chick Corea first brought to the group, yet also coming together with the sort of soulful focus that really makes this second chapter so great too! Chick plays a huge host of keyboards, almost more than we can imagine being on a single stage – Fender Rhodes, minimoog, Arp, clavinet, and more – and Gayle Morgan also plays more keys, but more importantly lends some soulful vocals to the outing. Other players include John Thomas and James Tinsley on trumpets, Joe Farrell on saxes, and Stanley Clarke on bass – and titles include "Opening 77", "The Endless Night", "The Moorish Warrior & Spanish Princess", "Spanish Fantasy", "Music Magic", and "So Long Mickey Mouse". Blue Note, 2016. Used ... $4.99
The Blue Note debut of alto saxophonist Logan Richardson – an up-and-coming player you might know from a few previous records, or his work with Jason Moran, Gerald Clayton, or the Next Collective! This set may well surpass all those other projects, though – as Richardson's really emerging as a visionary in his own right – leading a creative quintet here that features strong piano and Fender Rhodes from Moran, guitars from Pat Metheny, and drums from Nasheet Waits – a lineup that might well intimidate a weaker player, but which really seems to set Richardson on fire! The presence of both Metheny and Moran is great – and gives the music this electric vibe that also retains an edge – one that makes for a nice counterpart to Logan's lines on alto, and which seems to underscore some of their darker qualities too. Production and performance are pretty straightforward, which is a further strength of the set – and titles are mostly originals – save for a version of Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven". Original tracks include "Time", "Alone", "Imagine", "Creeper", "Mind Free", and "In Your Next Life". CD

The band here is at their peak, and this set features a nice large lineup that includes Tom Coster, Richard Kermode, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jose Chepito Areas and Michael Shreve, plus Leon Thomas on vocals! Some tracks show the clear influence of Miles' electric jazz recordings from the same period, while others have a hardcore Latin percussion base, and as you can imagine there's no shortage of full on guitar pyrotechnics and jamming on all the band members' parts. Most of the group's tracks that have entered classic status are here, but the moments that shine the brightest are the lesser known numbers and extended passages where the group really gets into the groove! A lost relic in the Sinatra catalog – a 60s Holiday album cut with family members Frank Jr, Nancy, and Tina! There's a definite TV show sort of feeling to the album – as a number of the tunes are done by the whole family, trading verses as they would in a performance – while others have solo members stepping out on their own, delivering sometimes-shaky versions of a few unusual Christmas tunes. As you can imagine, the solo Frank numbers are the ones that are really the best – and the album's worth it alone for the tracks "Whatever Happened To Christmas", one of the saddest Holiday tunes we've ever heard – as well as Frank's re-recording of the excellent "Christmas Waltz", one of the best tunes from his Capitol Christmas album. Arrangements are by Nelson Riddle, mostly, and some tracks feature backings by the Jimmy Joyce Singers. Nancy sings "It's Such A Lonely Time Of Year" and "Kids", Frank Jr sings "Some Children See Him", Tina sings "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", and the whole family sings "12 Days Of Christmas", "Bells Of Christmas", and "I Wouldn't Trade Christmas". A fantastic package of work from the legendary On-U Sound label – four of the most important early albums on the label – from a time when the imprint was completely revolutionizing the influence of Jamaican music on the British scene! All of the albums were produced by Adrian Sherwood – who'd drank heavily of the sounds of Kingston in the 70s, but also grew up at a time when the more unique electronics and production styles of the post-punk years were holding sway – modes that he brought into play with the reggae sounds on the records, for one of the most unusual blends you can imagine! While The Clash and other UK artists just took on Jamaican music directly, Sherwood attempted to re-channel and shape it – at a level that not only offered respect and new showcases to reggae performers, but also then went back to have an influence i Jamaica too. The set features four full albums, all in tiny LP-styled covers – Leaps & Bounds by Singers & Players, Threat To Creation by Creation Rebel with New Age Steppers, Lows & Highs by Creation Rebel, and the classic compilation album Wild Paarty Sounds Vol 1 – one of the earliest, and most mindblowing On-U sound albums of all time! The one-time obscure, now straight-up classic funky soul record by 24-Carat Black! This beautiful LP was released by Stax in the early 70s, but somehow got lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, it was rediscovered by the international groove community in the years to come, and it's been at the top of everyone's playlist (and want list) ever since! This is sort of a politically conscious mini-opera, or suite, with 8 tracks of spiritual funk and soul, all strung together in a righteous package that's as perfectly-conceived as you could imagine for an independent soul release from the 70s. You've probably heard at least one sample from this album – maybe from the cuts "Brown-Baggin", "Food Stamps", or the title cut "Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth", a great sample cut – but the whole album's great, and it totally deserves its massive reputation! The mad talents of Italian soundtrack genius Piero Umiliani are turned towards his love of Duke Ellington – and the result is an incredibly groovy batch of tracks that mix up jazz, electronics, and plenty of great keyboards! The bulk of the material on the set was recorded in 1974 – and it features Umiliani playign moog and ARP, in a strange sort of "tribute" to Ellington that takes the usual Duke tunes, and turns them into hard grooving little numbers, with lots of bubbling electronic bits and weird sound effects. The first cut on the set is a mad mad version of "Caravan" which leaps and churns all over the place, sounding funkier than you could ever imagine! A fantastic project that links together two legends in Polish jazz – saxophonist Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, whose tenor has been blowing our minds for decades – and the late jazz/soundtrack composer Krzysztof Komeda, whose music is featured in the set! The album's based around a longer suite of songs – My Sweet European Homeland – a beautiful jazz composition that Komeda created in 1967, before leaving for greater fame in the US – and the music is a perfect balance of Komeda's modernism with an under-tapped side of sentiment that doesn't always show up in his work. The whole thing has the sense of history and longing you might imagine from its title – and proves to be a sublime showcase for Jan's tenor skills, which only seem to have gotten better since the 70s – in a group that features Henryk Miskiewicz on alto, Robert Majewski on trumpet, Wojciech Niedziela on piano, Slawomir Kurkiewicz on bass, and Marcin Jahr on drums. Varese, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Great late work from The Zombies – tracks that are a perfect bridge between Odessey & Oracle and the early records from Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent! The cuts here include some late singles issued as part of the Time Of The Zombies album in the US, and other Decca work from the time that never saw the light of day for years – brought together with a very unified feel that shows not only the increasing sense of majesty in Blunstone's vocals, but also some of the grittier touches that Argent was bringing to his instrumentation. Titles include early versions of "Smokey Day", "She Loves The Way They Love Her", and "If It Don't Work Out" – plus "Girl Help Me", "I'll Keep Trying", "Don't Cry For Me", "Imagine The Swan", "Walking In The Sun", and the smoking instrumental "Conversation Off Floral Street". Ace (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A really cool collection, and one that's got a very special focus – an imaginary soundtrack for the record-breaking British summer of 1976 – a searingly hot time that really pushed the nation to the brink! Bob Stanley's given us some great collections on Ace Records before – often with Pete Wiggs, or as Saint Etienne – and this set continues the very special vibe of those sets, by bringing together cuts that we never would have thought would work so well otherwise – a sublime mix of soul, rock, and pop – all glowing together with the warm vibe of the summer of 1976! Titles include "I'm Mandy Fly Me" by 10CC, "Walking So Free" by Spike Janson, "Sugar Shuffle" by Lynsey DePaul, "Liquid Sunshine" by John Cameron, "Not On The Outside" by Sylvia, "You Are My Love" by Liverpool Express, "You're The Song" by Hollywood Freeway, "Discover Me" by David Ruffin, "Stoned Out" by Simon Park, "Montreal City" by Azimuth, "Stay With Me" by Blue Mink, "Music" by Carmen McRae, "Rock N Roll Star" by Barclay James Harvest, "Fallin In Love" by Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds, "Inspiration Information" by Shuggie Otis, and "Miss My Love Today" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Imagine the mixtape from Guardians Of The Galaxy, but done by a much hipper ear, and you'll get a good idea of this one! CD

VariousCameroon Garage Funk ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
We're not sure we've ever heard the term "garage funk" before, but it certainly fits the vibe of this sweet little collection – even though all the tracks here were actually recorded in a church! Not that the music is religious, though – the funky sounds within are certainly secular – it's just that in the city of Yaounde in the 70s, the recording services in a local church were one of the few spots that a local up and coming act could lay down a few tracks for themselves – music that's captured here in a stunning assortment of rare tunes that mostly never saw the light of day at the time! Imagine some of the more popular sounds you know from West Africa in the 70s, then imagine them stripped down to the core – and captured with a rough-edged vibe that makes the music really leap from the grooves, even all these many years later. The approach results in sounds that you'd maybe hear if you stumbled upon a box of small label funky 45s in the back corner of a local market at the end of the 70s – but presented here with the detailed notes, full history, and spectacular sound that have made us love the Analog Africa label over the years. Titles include "Sie Tcheu" by Joseph Kamga, "Ma Wde Wa" by Los Camaroes, "Yondja" by Ndenga Andre Destin Et Les Golden Sounds, "Odylife" by Damas Swing Orchestra, "Quier Wapatcha" by Charles Lembe, "Africa Iyo" by Jean Pierre Djeukam, "Woman Be Fire" by Lucas Tala, "Mezek Me Mama" by Mballa Bony, and "Moni Ngan" by Willie Songue Et Les Showmen. Forget any cliches you might have in mind about Cuban music – that idea that all the "old guys" of the Buena Vista Social Club were responsible for most of the sounds of Havana – because here, you'll hear amazing sounds from the younger generation – an amazing array of talents who were really transforming the scene in the 70s and early 80s! Sure, there's some familiar elements here – many of the artists start with older Afro Cuban roots – but the music also really takes off with all sorts of weird and wonderful touches – bits of funk, soul, jazz, and even some electronics – used in really compelling ways that definitely live up to the "experiments" in the title, but continue to provide the sort of groove you'd imagine from Cuban music. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Mad music that you might never have heard otherwise – the fantastic fifth installment in this excellent series inspired by The Cramps – and maybe the deepest-digging so far! There's no holds barred here – both in the source of the material, and the style – and the main criteria just seems to be finding tracks that are as way-out and wild as possible – almost all of which are pulled from the 45rpm underground of the late 50s and early 60s! The "jukebox" in the title is well-placed – as most of these cuts are mad rompers that would really liven up a nightclub – but we also can't imagine there ever being any jukebox as hip as this one, to bring all these fantastic singles together. Titles include "Icky Poo" by The Nomads, "Pimples & Braces" by Ric Gary, "Fling" by The Phaetons, "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman, "Bop Crazy Baby" by Vern Pullens, "Boom Stix" by Curley & The Jades, "Cannibal Stew" by Jerry & Mel, "Talk About A Party" by Lee Braun, "Mad Gass" by The Royal Teens, "Mama's Place" by Bing Day, "Mo Taters" by The Earthworms, "I'm The Wolfman" by Round Robin, "A Logger's Wife" by Buzz Martin, and "Strollie Bun" by The Blonde Bomber. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s. Used ... $16.99
An amazing introduction to one of the most significant cultural movements in the latter half of the 20th Century – the groundbreaking years of Tropicalia in late 60s Brazil! The music and legacy of Tropicalia are referenced often, but hardly ever presented this well – and this package is everything we could have hoped for as an introduction to the movement – filled not just with great music, but also an overwhelming amount of notes that trace the history of Brazilian music and art through their changes in relation to Tropicalia! In fact, the notes are almost worth the price of the compilation alone – very densely written over 48 pages in the CD booklet, with more information in one place than we've ever seen before. But as you might imagine, it's the music that really makes the set special – and Soul Jazz have done an excellent job of pulling together key late 60s works from the most important musicians associated with Tropicalia – an great starting point for the movement that's filled with most essential tracks! Titles include "Bat Macumba" by Gilberto Gil, "Tuareg" and "Sebastiana" by Gal Costa, "A Minha Menina" and "Panis Et Circenses" by Os Mutantes, "Alfo Mega" and "Tropicalia" by Caetano Veloso, "Gloria" and "Jimmy Renda-Se" by Tom Ze, "Procissao" by Gilberto Gil, "Ave Genghis Khan" by Os Mutantes, "Take It Easy My Brother Charles" by Jorge Ben, "Quero Sambal Meu Bem" by Tom Ze, "Lost In The Paradise" by Caetano Veloso, "Bat Macumba" by Os Mutantes, "Domingo No Parque" by Gilberto Gil & Os Mutantes, and "Irene" by Caetano Veloso. Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
It's hard to imagine Greece in the 20th century being described as primeval, but there's definitely a timeless vibe to the music on this collection – all pulled from vintage 78rpm discs that are filled with earthy percussion, exotic reed lines, and some especially nice stringed instrumentation! Most numbers seem to be instrumental, and although the date range in the title is large, the bulk of the recordings here are from the late 20s and early 30s – prime material for the expansion of the 78 market into more regional territories – of the sort that have been documented on similar collections by the Honest Jons or Dust To Digital labels. This collection is an initial foray by the Third Man group, in collaboration with collector Christopher King – who provided all the discs used in the collection – and despite the age and the format, there's a strong sense of clarity throughout – possibly because most of the material was recorded in studios rather than in the field. The set comes with a nice set of notes, a cover illustration by Robert Crumb, and 28 tracks that include "Sousta Rethymniotiki" by G Canteris and G Gombakis, "Ousak Tsiftelli" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Selfos" by Demetrios Jalkias", "Golfo" (Anonymous), "Syrtos Politikos" by Kyr Keravnos, "Kritiki Sousta" by A Karavitas & G Marianos, "Tzarama" by Nikos Karakostas and M Lakkergis, "Platanos" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Mirologi-Epirotiko Makedoniko" by Elias Karathimos, and "Kotta Mou" by Antonios Sakelarou. ✨✧ Chris AndersonInverted Image ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure trio side from under-recorded Chicago pianist Chris Anderson – who plays here with Bill Lee and either Walter Perkins or Philly Joe Jones on drums, in a trio that made the core of the rhythm section on Frank Strozier's excellent Jazzland date, Long Night. The group is in fine form here, running through both standards and originals, and though Anderson's name isn't as well known as many other pianists, it ought to be, and he was no stranger to other Windy City jazz greats such as Johnny Griffin. Imagine a cross between Bill Evans and Elmo Hope, and you might get a picture of where he's coming from, though Anderson's voice is all his own, weaving some nice sinuous lines on a set that leans heavily on ballads here, including "You'd Be Nice To Come Home To", "My Funny Valentine" and the originals "See You Saturday" – and "Inverted Image", the title track. A bold vision for a better version of our nation – served up here by percussionist Kahil El Zabar, but in a mode that also has him working as the conductor of a larger ensemble too! The record has all the sense of pride, power, and optimism of some of the best sessions of this type from the 80s – that feeling that music can actually effect change, especially in the hands of artists like this – a very strong ensemble that features work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Josh Ramos on bass, Samuel Williams on violin, and Dennis Winslett on alto sax! The record still has a sense of groove that you'd know from Kahil's smaller group records – imagine a Ritual Trio sense of rhythm with augmented elements – and the set mixes a few well-chosen covers with great originals. A real classic from the great Fela Kuti – a seminal mid 70s record that not only shows his impeccable sense of rhythm, but also his sense of rage as well! The title track – "Expensive Sh_t" – is Fela's answer to the time that he got busted for dope, and was forced to take a dump for the cops in order to "produce the goods" (which he had cleverly hidden in his stomach). The track has a great choppy funk groove, and is filled with the kind of raw anger you can imagine that the subject matter would produce – rich emotion that not only comes out in the lyrics, but also the sharp instrumental solos! One of the trippiest albums recorded for Verve in the 60s – a unique 2LP set by Japanese psych artist Harumi – and a record that stands proudly next to the best by Zappa or the Velvets at the time! The double-length space of the record really helps give it some shape – as Harumi starts out sweet, then gets a bit wilder, and increases the sense of experimentation as the set rolls on – so that the final track is a side-long psychedelic jam that's topped with spoken passages by Harumi's parents and sister! We like the poppier tunes the best, though – and they feature a mix of orchestrations, fuzzy guitar, and vibes – all layered with a really beautiful sense of sound, to accompany vocals by Harumi and Rosko. There's a gentle, breezy, and sometimes slightly funky quality to these numbers – Sunshine Pop with a trace of jazz – and exactly the kind of psyche album you might imagine from Verve in the 60s! Titles include "Sugar In Your Tea", "Caravan", "Hunters Of Heaven", "Talk About It", "First Impressions", "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do", "Hello", "What A Day For Me", "We Love", "Fire By The River", and "Samurai Memories". Arguably one of the greatest pop albums of all time – a pure act of genius from Todd Rundgren, and one of the few cases in rock music where two records are actually better than one! The double-length set was Rundgren's third solo effort after the breakup of Nazz – but it's a broad step ahead from the first two, and a strong move into the kind of near-perfect, yet always-human pop that made Rundgren so great in the 70s. Sides one through three of the album were completely done by Todd himself – all instruments, voices, and production handled through the then-new magic of the 16 track studio – and Rundgren's really at his best here, working in the kind of personal modes that make his tunes so great, some of the best of the mainstream singer/songwriter generation. Side four has fuller arrangements and other players coming into the mix, but the core feel of the rest of the record is very nicely preserved – apart from a few tunes that perhaps get a bit too goofy. It's hard to imagine more great pop songs in one album – and the set's overflowing with genius moments that include "Marlene", "I Saw The Light", "I Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference", "It Takes Two To Tango", "Sweeter Memories", "I Went To The Mirror", "One More Day", "Song Of The Viking", and "Hello It's Me". Capitol album that compiles some of Charlie Barnet's earlier 78rpm sides for the label, recorded in 1949 and 1950, with medium sized groups that have a good swing behind Barnet's firey tenor. Titles include "Cu-Ba", "Eugipelliv", "Lonely Street", "Pan Americana", and "Spain". Nice stuff, with more sophistication than you'd imagine! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 50s mono turquoise label pressing. Vinyl has numerous marks and plays with some pops and surface noise. Cover is still decent, with some tape at the top seam and small initials in pen in back.)

✨✧ Brady BunchMerry Christmas From The Brady Bunch ... LP
Paramount, Early 70s. Good ... Out Of Stock
Stop, mommy – it hurts! This incredibly painful album features the whole cast of the Brady Bunch – well, the kids only, really – singing Christmas tunes like "The First Noel", "Jingle Bells", "Frosty The Snowman", "Silent Night", and "Little Drummer Boy". Given that they give solos to Jan, Peter, Cindy, and Bobby, you can imagine just how awful this album is – the kind of record that makes you want to give up Christmas forever! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a light stain on the back.)

✨✧ Michael GingoldAd Nauseum – Newsprint Nightmares From The 70s & 80s (hardcover expanded edition) ... Book
1984, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful images from the days when the movie section of the newspaper was the place where most folks learned about upcoming films – when all the studios would take out huge ads that were almost like mini-movie posters themselves – a good number of which are offered up in this book! Collector Michael Gingold painstakingly gathered together over 700 different ads from the 70s and 80s – most in black and white, but with a lurid style that really popped off the newsprint back in the day – and which looks even better here on the better quality pages in the heavy volume! There's a bit of introduction for most of the films – but the bulk of the book lets the ads speak for themselves – and they're pretty darn amazing, even the sorts of things you can't imagine the published in a paper that would be read by the whole family. 366 pages, hardcover, and super well-done! Book
(Second edition – with 125 new images from the 70s!)

✨✧ Muriel GrossmannQuiet Earth ... CD
Dreamland (Estonia), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing quiet about the way that Muriel Grossman approaches her music – as the saxophonist is one of the boldest, strongest voices in jazz in the past decade – one of the key proponents of the new spiritual underground, and a player who just seems to win us over more and more with each new record! This album's got the amazing rhythmic pulse of Grossman's previous records, but also shifts the sound slightly too – as in addition to the fantastic use of guitar by Radomir Milojkovic, the set also features these strongly swirling organ lines from Llorenc Barcelo – in a way that makes us imagine what it might sound like if we ever got to hear those lost jam sessions between John Coltrane and Larry Young! Grossman blows tenor, alto, and soprano sax here, with a rich sense of imagination throughout – and the rest of the group features Gina Schwarz on bass and Uros Stamenkovic on drums – on long titles that include "Wien", "African Call", "Quiet Earth", and "Peaceful River". ✨✧ Ashley HenryAshley Henry's 5ive ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
This might be the first we've ever heard from pianist Ashley Henry – but given the quality of the set, we imagine that we might be listening to his music for many years to come! Henry's got this wonderful conception of rhythm – as if he's sometimes racing ahead of the bass and drums, and grabbing up all these handfuls of notes – scattering them quickly in these broad waves of soulful colors, while the bass of Sam Vicary and drums of Sam Gardner swing in and keep things moving forward! There's a sense of freshness to this album that reminds us of the time we first heard the music of Robert Glasper many years back – even though Henry is a completely different stylist – as you'll hear on titles that include "Deja Vu", "Altruism", "Deimos", "St Anne's", and "Monk's Dream". ✨✧ Little RichardRill Thing (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Omnivore, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing set from Little Richard – a stunning comeback session from the start of the 70s – recorded at Muscle Shoals with a heavy funk component in the mix! Richard arranged and produced the record himself – and it's a beautiful illustration of his genius – hardly dimmed at this point in his career, and if anything, really redefined for a new generation – with some razor-sharp grooves that are perfect for his hard-wailing vocals! The title cut – "The Rill Thing" – is a monster 10 minute instrumental jam, with a heavy funk sound that you can't even begin to imagine – and the rest of the set is pretty amazing too, with tracks that include "Spreadin' Natta What's The Matter", "Freedom Blues", "Two Time Loser", "Somebody Saw You", "Lovesick Blues", and "Greenwood Mississippi". Includes four bonus tracks – "Shake A Hand", "I Saw Her Standing There (radio edit)", and two cool "radio spot" tracks! CD

✨✧ Julie LondonMake Love to Me (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard to imagine that Julie London would ever have to ask anyone to make love to her – at least not when she looks as sexy as this on the cover! The album's a key early classic for Liberty – still very fragile, personal, and up-close enough to make you think you might just be able to jump inside the cover and spend the night with Julie! Russ Garcia handles the backings with great care – a bit of gentle strings here, some light jazz there – but always letting London's breathy vocals come up very high in the mix. Titles include "Go Slow", "Lover Man", "Body & Soul", "Snuggled On Your Shoulder", and "Make Love To Me". CD

✨✧ Frank LoweOut Loud ... LP
Triple Points, 1974. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic lost work from the great Frank Lowe – a crucial saxophonist in the generation between the 60s ESP Records scene and the 70s loft jazz generation – and a player whose best legacy is often found in overlooked material like this! The set features both studio and live material by an incredible group – originally intended by Lowe as an album titled Logical Extensions, but never issued at the time. All material was recorded in the Survival and Rivbea studios on the lower east side – and the group features a young Joseph Bowie on trombone, William Parker on bass, and Steve Reid on drums – all sounding about as great as you could ever imagine from this point in their careers. Lowe blows tenor, soprano, flute, harmonica, and handles a variety of other instruments – and if there's another record that stands as strongly as a testament to his explosive creative genius at the time, we're not sure what it might be! Chien Chien Lu, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Imagine a record that starts with a fantastic reading of a Roy Ayers' tune, then just gets better as things go on – and that's very much what you'll get here, in this sweet set from vibist Chien Chien Lu! ✨✧ Misha Mengelberg/Piet Noordijk with Ted CursonJourney – Live In Amsterdam 1966 ... CD
MCN (Netherlands), 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing slice of rare work from pianist Misha Mengelberg – caught her early in his career, but already an important modern jazz force on the European scene! The set's a live one – featuring a very sharp-edged combo with Misha on piano, Piet Noordjik on alto, Rob Lengereis on bass, and Han Bennink on drums – plus guest trumpet from Ted Curson on two long tracks! As you can imagine, we love the Curson material – and Ted always seems to sparkle in a fresh setting like this, drawing new energy from less familiar players – and stretching things out to the height of his free-thinking talents of the time. But Noordjik is wonderful, too – really hanging nicely in a balance between soulful and modern with his horn, and easily matched by Mengelberg's piano – really great to hear in a more structured setting than his later, freer records. Titles include "Driekusman Total Loss", "The Leopard", "Sugar N Spice", "Journey", and "Peer's Counting Song". CD

✨✧ Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker In Sweden 1950 ... LP
Alamac, 1950. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Given the coolness of the Swedish jazz scene in the postwar years, we can imagine that the arrival of Charlie Parker on the scene must have set things on fire quite a bit! The album's a great example of the Bird magic even in the most unusual of circumstances – as the settings are less than key, the recording quality a bit muted, and the players all fine, but sometimes not as well matched as they might be – yet none of that matters to Charlie, because he soars out here with the kind of hard-burning solo work that's all-Parker, all the way – pure jazz magic that's still strongly inspiring, even after all these years. The set features live recordings done at Folkets Park and an unknown restaurant, with players that include Rolf Ericson on trumpet, Gosta Theselius on piano, and Rowland Greenberg on trumpet – and titles include "Body & Soul", "Strike Up The Band", "Star Eyes", "Cool Blues", "Fine & Dandy", and "How High The Moon". ✨✧ Sun RaLanquidity ... LP
Philly Jazz/Strut (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing album from Sun Ra – a set that's got some of the same soulful focus as Space Is The Place, and a really surprising sense of groove on many moments! The record's actually a bit funky – if you can believe it – and was recorded with electric keyboards, bass, and guitar (played by the mysterious Disco Kid) – at the studios of Bob Blank, at a time when he was really able to capture the many strands of music that would come together in a performance, then find just the right way to put them over on record! The album was originally dismissed by many Sun Ra fans for being a funk sell-out album – but over the years, it's become a prized album for its cosmic sense of soul and great focus of the group's more far-reaching ideas – and at some level, it's probably the sound that most people imagine the Arkestra to have when they're first starting out, rather than the more avant material that dominates most of their catalog. The whole thing is wonderful – and titles include "That's How I Feel", "Where Pathways Meet", "Twin Stars of Thence", and "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Remastered edition – with a very cool foil-styled cover!)
