Illinois JacquetDesert Winds ... LP
Argo, 1964. Very Good ... $19.99
An easily-grooving set that features Illinois Jacquet blowing over small combo arrangements with Tommy Flanagan on piano and Kenny Burrell on guitar – plus some added Latin percussion from Willie Rodriguez! The presence of the Latin percussion really adds a nice element to the album – making the tracks dance lightly, in the "conga plus soul jazz" mode that was being employed heavily at the time on labels like Blue Note and Prestige – and in a style that really makes Jacquet hit a few new notes to match the groove! Titles include "Star Eyes", "Blues For The Early Bird", "Lester Leaps In", "Canadian Sunset", and "Desert Winds". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Grey label Argo pressing. Cover has some wear & light staining on the lower corner, with some wear and aging overall.)

Illinois JacquetGo Power ... CD
Argo/Universal (Japan), 1962/1966. Used ... $11.99 13.99
Go Power indeed – as the album's a really stripped down groover, and one that has the tenor of Illinois Jacquet working in spare trio formation with Milt Bucker on Hammond and Alan Dawson on drums! The record's got a sound that's even earthier than some of Jacquet's other work for Argo – partially because the session was recorded live at Lennie's On The Turnpike in Boston, but also because the tracks are longer and a bit more open-ended. Buckner's a great counterpart for the album, with a groove that's deeper than we remember – and the hip drumming of Alan Dawson helps keep things in a groovier 60s mode throughout. Titles include "Watermelon Man", "Illinois Jacquet Flies Again", "On A Clear Day", and "Pamela's Blues". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

Illinois Jacquet & Ben WebsterKid & The Brute ... CD
Verve, Mid 50s. Used ... $14.99
The title's a bit misleading – as a number of the tracks on here were recorded by Jacquet, and Webster only sat in on two longer jamming numbers – "I Wrote This For The Kid" and "The Kid & The Brute". Not that that's a problem – as those long numbers take up a good portion of the record, and are really driving numbers that have some conga in the rhythm section, which makes for a lively kick that really drives the tracks. The conga also surfaces in "Mambocito Mio", a Latin jammer that moves at the best cubop speed – and other tunes include "Saph", "September Song", and "Jacquet's Dilemma". 15 tracks in all on this limited edition CD. CD
(1998 Verve Elite edition. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ Illinois JacquetSwing's The Thing (Swings The Thing/Cool Rage) ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1956/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great 50s Verve work from saxophonist Illinois Jacquet – 2 albums back to back on one CD! First up is Swing's The Thing", one of the greatest of the small-group sessions by Jacquet for Verve – and one of the hardest to find! The album is unique in that the songs are longer than usual for Jacquet, and that the band is quite small – really only a sextet, with Jimmy Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Jo Jones on drums. Tracks include "Las Vegas Blues", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", and "Achtung". After this, the CD features 4 more numbers that were recorded in 1958 for Verve, but never appeared until much later on the collection Cool Rage – a really unique quartet date that has Jacquet working with Wild Bill Davis on organ, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Johnny Williams on drums – in a mode that almost points the way towards later work by Illinois on Argo. Titles include "No Sweat", "Flying Home", "The Fluke", and "Nite Out" – and the CD also features a bonus take of "Robbin's Nest" from another album. CD

✨✧ Illinois JacquetBlues – That's Me! ... LP
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A late 60s set, but one that recalls the sweet swinging style of Prestige Records' Swingville sessions from the early part of the decade! Illinois Jacquet sounds wonderful here on tenor (and a bit of bassoon on one track!) – blowing with plenty of open space amidst a lineup that includes Tiny Grimes on guitar, Wynton Kelly on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Oliver Jackson on drums. The approach is kind of a mix of Jacquet's mid 60s work for Argo/Cadet, with some of the late 50s non-bop swing sessions issued by Prestige – and titles include "The Galloping Latin", "Still King", "For Once In My Life", and "Every Day". Nice mixture of boppish and swing-based material, and an excellent soulful session that has Illinois Jacquet playing in a stripped-down setting with Ben Tucker on bass, Alan Dawson on drums, and Barry Harris on piano, who adds a nice warm dimension to the set. Jacquet's tone is fantastic as always, and it's a real treat to hear him work his way around the tracks in a relatively free environment. ✨✧ Illinois JacquetKing! ... LP
Prestige, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A bit of a mad LP for Jacquet – ostensibly trad on the outside, but with some weird little elements once you give it a closer listen. The lineup is conventional enough – with players that include Joe Newman, Milt Buckner, Billy Butler, Jo Jones, and Montego Joe – but it's the way they come together that makes the set really work. Jacquet's tone is rough and growly on most numbers – and the rhythm has a scattered finish that keeps things a bit off-guard. Titles include "The King", "Caravan", "A Haunting Melody", and "How High The Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Illinois JacquetSoul Explosion ... LP
Prestige, 1969. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet soul explosion from Illinois Jacquet – a record that's quite different than his previous work for Verve, Chess, and Roulette – and one that has him fronting a very hip larger group! The "soul" in the title is well-placed – as there's a strong influence here from 60s music from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, spun out in a more jazz-based way – but not in styles that are as much like other soul jazz of the time. The tunes are much longer than standard soul instrumentals, and feature plenty of well-blown solos – but they also have a nicely gritty feel at the core, which makes for a nice change for Jacquet. Players include Joe Newman on trumpet, Matthew Gee on trombone, Frank Foster on tenor, Cecil Payne on baritone, Milt Buckner on piano and organ, and Wally Richardson on guitar – and titles include "The Soul Explosion", "After Hours", "I'm A Fool To Want You", and "The Eighteenth Hole". The two tenorists are clearly the stars of the show from the space they get here, but the other players are great too – and include Howard McGhee on trumpet, Bill Harris on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Jo Jones on drums – all rolling out in long spontaneous tunes that show that the JATP sessions could really cook when they wanted to! A beautiful album of dark-hued vocals – sung by Johnny Hartman with a quality that's as smokey as the image of him with a cigarette on the cover! The album set a whole new standard for male vocal jazz in the 60s – and is a distillation and refinement of earlier ideas in music by Billy Eckstine, taken down to more personal and fluid levels by Hartman – and recorded here with great small group baking that includes Illinois Jacquet on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The vibe is very mellow, but never sloppy or sleepy – and titles include "Charade", "In The Wee Small Hours", "Stairway To the Stars", "Kiss & Run", "Our Time", "Don't You Know I Care", "If I'm Lucky", and "Don't Call It Love". A wonderful meeting of two of the biggest 50s talents on the drums – and a session that's great not only for the expected firey percussion, but also for the horn work by other members on the set! Given the "drum battle" style of the record, the tracks are long and very open – done in a studio mode that recalls some of the Krupa/Rich meetings at JATP, and like the JATP sides, featuring plenty of space for players to take longer solos. Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Flip Phillips, and Roy Eldridge get in some nice licks on the set – and other players include Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Ray Brown. Titles include "Gene's Blues", "Bernie's Tune", "Buddy's Blues", and "I Never Knew". CD also includes bonus tracks "Sunday" and "Monster". CD

Leo ParkerRollin With Leo (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $16.99
One of those great "never was" Blue Note sessions – recorded in the 60s, but never issued until years later – even though the label had assigned it a cover, title, and catalog number! The album was the last session by baritone sax player Leo Parker – a bop and R&B legend who sadly passed along at the young age of 36, but left a really rich legacy of music. Parker has a way with the baritone that's almost as lean as a tenorist – blowing the horn with sharp, well-placed notes that really make this session cook – somewhere in the R&B-influenced territory of Don Wilkerson's work on Blue Note. Other players include the great Dave Burns on trumpet – always a welcome presence on any date – plus Bill Swindell on tenor sax, Johnny Acea on piano, Al Lucas or Stan Conover on bass, and Wilbert Hogan or Purnell Rice on drums. Tracks include "The Lion's Roar", "Rollin With Leo", "Jumpin Leo", "Talkin The Blues", "Mad Lad Returns", and Illinois Jacquet's "Music Hall Beat". CD

Some of the rarest work ever recorded by guitarist Kenny Burrell – his early 60s instrumental sides for Columbia Records! Kenny only really cut 2 LPs for Columbia at the time – the instrumental album Blusin Around, and the stranger set Weaver Of Dreams, which actually features Kenny on vocals (one of his few albums of the sort.) The set here resurrects Kenny's Columbia work as a musician – by compiling tracks from the Blusin Around album, plus 9 more titles that have never been issued before, but were recorded at the time! Kenny's playing here in nicely laidback settings – small groups that include players like Hank Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie Bert, Jack McDuff, and Leo Wright – a total of 18 tracks in all that represent a strong body of lost work. ✨✧ Buddy RichRoar Of 74/Last Blues Album/Very Live At Buddy's Place (3CD set) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three groovy 70s albums from Buddy Rich! Roar Of 74 is one of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! The band on the set is very full – with a heck of a lot of trumpets in the brass section, set next to searing sax work by the great Pat LaBarbera. But even better is the rhythm section – which grooves in a hard electric funk mode, thanks to guitar from Joe Beck, bass from Tony Levin, and some surprisingly smoking drums from Buddy himself! Tracks are all very nicely grooving – and titles include "Kilimanjaro Cookout", "Nuttville", "Senator Sam", "Waltz Of The Mushroom Hunters", and "Big Mac". Last Blues Album has a misleading title, as there's nothing "blues" about this set – as Buddy Rich is working with some of the best soul jazz players of the Groove Merchant label – on a set that's one of his few small combo albums from the 70s! The vibe is very relaxed and laidback, and even Buddy's tight drumming can't over-hype the sound. Tracks are longish and open – more in the Prestige jazz mode of the 60s than the usual funkier style of the Groove Merchant label – and the sextet features Jimmy McGriff on organ, George Freeman on guitar, Kenny Barron on electric piano, Illinois Jacquet on tenor, and Bob Cranshaw on bass. Titles include "Soft Winds", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "How Long", "Courage", and "Alright". Very Live At Buddy's Place is hard-swinging Buddy Rich from the prime early 70s years – not exactly an all-out funk affair, but still a great groover, with plenty of hip little big band numbers! The groove here is nice and lean – and Buddy and the group are working at Buddy's own club – hitting that trademark all-out Rich sound, but still leaving plenty of room for the soloists. The group's got some great soul jazz players – including Sonny Fortune on alto, Jack Wilkins on guitar, and Kenny Barron on piano – as well as some really smoking tenor work from Sal Nistico, who's always adaptable to a setting like this. The album's got a tasty version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", plus other nice tracks that include "Sierra Lonely", "Nica's Dream", "Billy's Bounce", "Cardin Blue" and "Jumpin At The Woodside". CD

✨✧ Gene Krupa & Buddy RichKrupa & Rich ... LP
Clef, Early 50s. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Leo ParkerRollin With Leo ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Verve, 1956. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great later Norman Granz live production – with work by Ella Fitzgerald, Flip Phillips, Illinois Jacquet, Louis Armstrong, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and others! The original album is a landmark historic document, as it was the first ever live jazz album recorded at the legendary LA venue. The set opens with with the Norman Granz intro that leads to the Jam Session portion with Harry Edison, Roy Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, rolling nicely into material led by Art Tatum on piano, including "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Begin The Beguine", "Willow Weep For Me" and "Humoresque". From there, Ella Fitzgerald and her group dig into "Love For Sale", "Little Girl Blue", and more. The set also features a couple of great numbers by the Oscar Peterson Trio: "9:20 Special" and "How 'Bout You" – and closes with a pair of numbers featuring Ella out front of Louie Armstrong and his group.
