Carmichael's approach is a lot less soul-based than that of McNair's Motown sessions – but that's ok with us, because we actually think she opens up a bit more in this sort of a setting – especially on some of the torchier or more jazz-based tracks. The package is a great way to look at Shorty in these "bubbling under" years – the time when he was making bold strides as a soloist in other artists' groups, then first forging the Giants sound that became one of the most popular in 50s jazz. The music often mixes rock touches with larger arrangements – and the recording quality is completely sublime – so that Meiko's voice is right out front in the mix, really commanding the proceedings with a vibe that's expressive, but in ways that are very different than Japanese female vocals from the decade before. You might recognize her voice from use of her music by Quentin Tarantino – but you hardly need that reference to enjoy this set – a wonderful album full of gems that include "Wara No Ue", "Onna Somuki Uta", "Onna Hagure Uta", "Nigori Onna", "Urami Bushi", "Betuni Doutte Koto Demo Nishi", "Hitora Kaze", and "Onna Kawaki Uta". A legendary set of firey jazz tracks recorded by trumpeter Dave Burns! This is one of Burns' few recordings as a leader, and it's a shame he didn't make more, because this one is stellar. The group features Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Harold Mabern on piano, and the great Billy Mitchell on tenor. They all swing high, wide, and mightily, especially on some of the set's standout tracks, like "Rigor Mortez", written by Burns, and "Warm Up", which is by Joe Farrell. Other highlights include "Now Ain't It", written and arranged by Melba Liston, and "Richie's Dillemma, an old favorite from the book of Harold Mabern. Excellent set, and a very tough one to find!
