Steve ArringtonDancin In The Key Of Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Iconoclassic, 1985. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A third great chapter in the career of the mighty Steve Arrington – a solo debut, after work in the groups Slave and Hall Of Fame – and a set that has Arrington maybe shining even more than ever in the spotlight! Rhythms are a bit more mid 80s than his previous work – but Steve's way of handling beats, basslines, and keyboards is every bit as funky as before – and his enthusiasm on the vocals brings a sort of warmth to the record that really knock away so much of the thinner soul on the charts! Arrington keeps things nice and lean – in a good way, which lets you know he's in charge – and titles include the anthemic title track "Dancin In The Key Of Life" – plus "Gasoline", "Stand With Me", "Turn Up The Love", "Brown Baby Boy", "Feel So Real", and "She Just Don't Know". CD features five bonus tracks – "Feel So Real (voc ext)", "Feel So Real (inst ext)", "Dancin In The Key Of Life (special rmx)", "Dancin In The Key Of Life (megamix)", and "Dancin In The Key Of Life (Timmy Regisford & Boyd Jarvis rmx)". BT ExpressDo It (Til You're Satisfied) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Scepter/Iconoclassic, 1974. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! This first record has the combo grooving hard and instrumentally – in the mode of a tight blacksploitation soundtrack, with plenty of tight wah wah guitar riffing, conga beats, and funky flute and sax – topped off by just the right amount of strings to make the set soar even more! The album's best known for the title track "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)" – which was a big hit, but is still an excellent groover – and the set also includes loads of other great cuts too – like "Express", which was the original song that the created the JBs' response track "Monorail"; "This House is Smokin'", which has lots of funky descending horn bits; and other great tunes that include "Mental Telepathy", "If It Don't Turn You On", and "Do You Like It". CD features two bonus tracks – the original 7" single versions of "Express" and "Do It". CD
(Well-done version – with new liner notes too!)

Canned HeatFuture Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/Iconoclassic, 1970. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A record with a space age cover, but a set that's every bit as raw and rootsy as all of the previous Liberty Records releases by Canned Heat! The group have really upped their chops here – and guitarist Harvey Mandel really sounds amazing, and is bringing in some of the funky elements that he was using on his own records at the time – almost even making things more complex at times, at a level that hides some of the bluesy elements at the core – a factor that's OK with us, because we love the funky bits so much! But there's also plenty of blues, too – and the vocals of Bob Hite sound as nice as ever – on titles that include "Let's Work Together", "Sugar Bee", "That's All Right Mama", "Skat", "London Blues", "So Sad", and "Shake It & Break It". CD features bonus tracks – "Poor Moon", "Wooly Bully", "Human Condition", and the long version of "Let's Work Together". CD

DamnedStrawberries (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bronze/Iconoclassic, 1982. New Copy 2CD ... $17.99 19.99
A great little record from The Damned – even if the set does have them very far away from their punkish roots! Yet like some of the best of their contemporaries, the group grew up fast – shed a bit of anger, learned how to play their instruments, and really developed a way with a tune – an asset that you'll hear here right from the very first note! The songwriting is smart, but sensitive too – and with a slight edge at times, there's almost an evolution to the group's sound that's similar to XTC over the same stretch of time – save for the fact that the guitars are sometimes a bit more ferocious! Captain Sensible's definitely making himself felt more here than earlier – even singing on a few of the best songs too – in a set that includes "Ignite", "Generals", "Stranger On The Town", "The Dog", "Gun Fury", "Life Goes On", "Don't Bother Me", and "Under The Floor Again". 2CD edition includes loads of great bonus tracks – including the cut "Fun Factory", done with Robert Fripp – plus "Lovely Money", "I Think I'm Wonderful", "Take That", "Lovely Money (disco mix)", "Dozen Girls (7" mix)", "Mine's A Large One", "Torture Me", "Disguse", "Citadel Zombies", and even some live versions of tracks on the album too! ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireRaise! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Iconoclassic, 1981. New Copy ... $11.99 13.98
Earth Wind & Fire hits the 80s – and never misses a beat! Turns out that the group's older style of jazzy funk was a perfect fit for the boogie-styled rhythms of the post-disco era – heard here on the megahit "Let's Groove", and followed up by a beautiful batch of supporting numbers! There's styles here that other groups were starting to use at the time – keyboard flourishes and more electrified rhythms at the bottom – but throughout the whole set, Maurice White and the group handle themselves with trademark EWF class, and elevate even the simplest of tunes to a higher level. Another winner for the group, and the kind of record that most other groups could only hope to record once! Titles include "Kalimba Tree", "Evolution Orange", "Let's Groove", "The Changing Times", "Wanna Be With You", "I've Had Enough", and "Lady Sun". This 2011 version on from Icon Classic has 3 bonus tracks: "Let's Groove (Special Remixed Holiday Version)", "Kalimba Tree (Long Version)" and "Let's Groove (Instrumental)". CD

Peter GreenIn The Skies (with bonus tracks) ... CD
PVK/Iconoclassic, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
A big comeback moment for Peter Green – really shining here as a lead act, at a time when his old group Fleetwood Mac had gone in a completely different direction! The guitar wizard is still amazing – and there's a shifting style from track to track, which includes a few instrumentals – making the album partly a great showcase for Green's always-inventive work on guitar, but also one for his surprisingly nice vocals too! The album marked a real return to the limelight for Green, and the first push to give him the sort of solo career he deserved for years to come – and it features help from Peter Bardens of Camel on some keyboards, and Snowy White on second guitar, sometimes sharing lead space on the record. Titles include "Tribal Dance", "In The Skies", "A Fool No More", "Proud Pinto", "Just For You", "Funky Chunk", "Apostle", "Seven Stars", and "Slabo Day". CD features bonus tracks – rehearsal versions of "Slabo Day" and "In The Skies" – and single versions of "Tribal Dance" and "Apostle". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersGo For Your Guns (with bonus tracks) ... CD
T Neck/Iconoclassic, 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A stone 70s classic from the Isley Brothers – a set recorded right at the height of their glory days – at a time when their sound was completely on the money! The cover has the group on stage – a photo taken during their run of arena concerts at the time – but the album's a studio effort throughout, and really shows the group's increasing understanding of the way the right production would bring out all the best elements in both their instrumentation and vocals! In fact, although the groovers are great, the group are maybe at their height with the impeccable production on two ballads – the sublime "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – served up alongside the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. But the whole thing's great – in the best Isley Brothers 70s way – and tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". This reissue features three bonus tracks – "The Pride (disco mix)", "Voyage To Atlantis (mono single)", and "Livin In The Life/Go For Your Guns (disco mix)". CD

✨✧ Isley BrothersIt's Our Thing ... CD
T Neck/Iconoclassic, 1969. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A stone classic from the Isleys – the album that kicked off their successful T-Neck label, and established that mighty Isleys sound that would have such a huge influence in the 70s! The title cut of the set – "It's Your Thing" – is a well-known classic that really sets the tone for the rest of the record – mixing guitar and chunky rhythms into a righteous funky style of soul that was miles away from the Brothers' earlier work on Motown and RCA. And believe it or not, the rest of the record's even better than the title cut – filled with sinister, sexy numbers that bristle with energy that's still heard best here at the point of its creation! Other gems include "Give the Women What They Want", "He's Got Your Love", "I Know Who You Been Socking It To", "Don't Give It Away", "He's Got Your Love", "Save Me", "Feel Like The World", and "Somebody Been Messin". Ultra heavy stuff! CD

Junie MorrisonEvacuate Your Seats (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ze/Iconoclassic, 1984. New Copy ... $14.99 17.99
A well-circulated solo set from Junie Morrison – by now working very far from the P-Funk empire, and with a groove that fits in nicely with the sound of 80s soul! The album's heavy on basslines, beats, and keyboards – very much an 80s funk evolution from Junie's 70s roots – with the man himself serving up lead vocals that have a light vibe that's very much in an electro-ready sort of style! A few cuts have more pronounced guitar solos, but with the fuzz trimmed to slide in nicely with the more electronic elements in the mix – that compact 80s mode in which everything comes on right down on top of each other in the mix! Titlesinclude "Tease Me", "Stick It In", "Break 6", "Here With You Tonight", "Show Me Yours", "Gyrate", "Driving In A Porsche", and "Techno Freqs". CD features bonus tracks – "Tease Me (Arthur Baker long mix)", "Tease Me (Arthur Baker short)", "Tease Me (Arthur Baker dub)", "Techno Freqs (UK single)", "Techo Freqs (12" rmx)", and "T-Frequan (dub)". Ohio PlayersTenderness (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Boardwalk/Iconoclassic, 1981. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A sweet early 80s set from the Ohio Players – one that's a bit different than their 70s hits, but in a way that also shows that the group were still very much in wonderful form! At a point when these guys could have easily stood still, and just kept churning out the kind of grooves that everyone else had borrowed from their 70s material – they instead choose to work in all these other great modes – including some surprisingly strong ballad/mellow soul numbers, given fuller treatment and almost a deep soul vocal approach – mixed with other funky tunes that bristle with great jazzy elements in the keyboards and horns, and which also use just the right touch of strings in a great way. Tracks include "Hard to Love Your Brother", "Call Me", "Skinny", "Sometimes I Cry", "It Takes A While", and "Try A Little Tenderness". Features the bonus tracks "Just Me" and "Try A Little Tenderness (12" mix)". CD

Cotillion/Iconoclassic, 1981. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Wonderful work from Slave – an album that's still got the hard funk of earlier years, yet which also has the group sweetening up their sound in a great sort of 80s groove way! Most tracks kick along with that great rolling bass sound that the group practically invented – and which has been their everlasting legacy to mainstream funk – and Steve Arrington's still in the group on lead vocals, really hitting some soaring notes that help the tunes groove even more – all of which maybe makes the record one of the most perfect distillations of everything that made Arrington and Slave such a standard-setting group for the 80s! Titles include "Party Lites", "Snap Shot", "Smokin", "Wait For Me", "Funken Town", and "Steal Your Heart". CD features bonus tracks – "Snap Shot (12" version)" and "Wait For Me (7" version)". CD

A&M/Iconoclassic, 1979. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
One of the real standouts in the late 70s run of records from The Tubes – a set that's not only got the tunes united by a concept, but which also features some impeccable production from Todd Rundgren! The group's fuzz on the guitars is turned up nice – almost like they're trying to give a nod to the new wave generation, while Rundgren ups the catchiness of their tunes, and finds a way to make the whole thing not get bogged down in the larger concept of the record – which is a commentary about television in the modern age. Titles include "TV Is King", "Prime Time", "Getoverture", "I Want It All Now", "No Way Out", "Only The Strong Survive", and "Telecide". CD features the bonus tracks "Dangerous", "Don't Ask Me", "Holy War", and "Dreams Come True". CD

T Neck/Iconoclassic, 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's the end of the 70s, and the Isleys are still going strong – keeping it real by dropping some of the fake funk of a few years before, and going for a smooth soul sound that would be one of their biggest strengths during the early 80s. This sound can be heard to perfection on the tracks "Say You Will" and "Here We Go Again", both wonderful numbers that have this strident groove that's part "Harvest For The World", part compressed guitars and keyboards working in a smooth wall of sound. Those two alone are more than worth the price of the record, and other titles include "Pass It On", "Go All The Way", and "The Belly Dancer" – all done in the Isleys' trademarked "part 1 & 2" style! ✨✧ Isley Jasper IsleyBroadway's Closer Than Sunset (with bonus track) ... CD
Iconoclassic/CBS, 1984. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first breakaway effort from the trio of Ernie Isley, Chris Jasper, and Marvin Isley – a set that's got an even leaner groove than some of the Isley Brothers material from years before! The group really hit their stride right away – stepping out in a sweet array of funky rhythms that have some definite 80s touches on the beats, yet which still share all the best Isleys elements overall! Guitar parts are especially sharp – that carved in soul sound that showed up in most Isleys projects from the early 70s onwards – and the vocals have a great sense of warmth and soul, especially on the mellower tunes in the set, which turn down some of the more hook-heavy rhythms heard on other tracks. Titles include "Serve You Right", "Sex Drive", "Love Is Gonna Last Forever", "Kiss & Tell", "I Can't Get Over Losin You", "Look The Other Way", "Break This Chain", and "Broadway's Closer Than Sunset Blvd". ✨✧ Grand Funk RailroadMark Don & Mel – 1969 to 1971 ... CD
Capitol/Iconoclassic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of work from the first chapter of Grand Funk Railroad – that moment when the group was just a power trio, and really helping to move their early blues inspirations into some fierce hard rock territory! The title's a reference to the lineup – Mark Farner on guitar and vocals, Don Brewer on drums and vocals, and Mel Schacher on bass – all working together in a mode that's really transformative over the short space of the material included in the set! At some level, GFR are almost an American equivalent of Free from the UK – a group who clearly have all the chops of the blues heroes they admire, but who are willing to let their hair down and hit more of a rock and roll starpower mode – unafraid to get a bit soulful on the vocals, and really letting their electric strings sing at an equally strong level. Titles include "Into The Sun", "Heartbreaker", "Time Machine", "Loneliness", "Are You Ready", "TNUC", "Inside Looking Out", "Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain", and "Paranoid". Nice CD package – with fold-out artwork like the original LP. CD

Graham Parker's left The Rumour behind for this early 80s set – but it's clear that he's also still every bit the strong songwriter as he was in his days with that group! The album's a post-punk singer/songwriter set that's very much in the best tone of the era – some of the bite of Joe Jackson's earliest work, some of the warmth of Elvis Costello, and all of those charms that are completely Graham's own. Titles include the single "Temporary Beauty" – plus "Big Fat Zero", "You Hit The Spot", "No More Excuses", "It's All Worth Nothing Alone", "Thankless Task", "Another Grey Area", and "Dark Side Of The Bright Lights".
