Ping PongAbout Time ... LP
Emiliana/Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
A lost jazz rock wailer from the Italian scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's got some tighter, shorter tracks than some of the prog classics from that nation to come – and a record that's maybe a nice bridge between the UK modes of that time when groups were evolving from the soulfulness of the beat group years to some freer flights of instrumental frenzy! Lyrics are all in English – and the rhythms can be romping and groovy in a really great way, often augmented by some wicked lead work on flute – used in a style that's maybe more Harold McNair than Ian Anderson – and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Dark Morning Skies", "Daft", "Drinking", "Banshee", "Diamond Seller", "Funny Wife", and "About Time". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSeparate Paths Together – An Anthology Of British Male Singer/Songwriters 1965 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Key work from an amazing time in British music – a time when the softer sounds of folk music and harder sounds of rock groups stepped aside to allow a unique hybrid to emerge – the sophisticated singer/songwriter, who had an ability to borrow the best from both genres, yet come up with a spirit that was all his own! You'll recognize some of the names here from their work in other fields – but together, the artists represent a very rich document of this unique moment in music – work that's free from commercial pursuits, and which still feels very fresh and new all these many decades later – thanks to a strong ear for songcraft, and a musical vision that's especially surprising from some of the artists who later went on to crossover fame in the mid 70s. The package features 66 tracks in all, with very detailed notes on the well-chosen array of tracks – titles by artists who include Dave Cousins, Gary Farr, Peter Sarstedt, Wizz Jones, Beau, Meic Stevens, Ian A Anderson, Mike Cooper, Mick Audsley, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayers, David McWilliams, Al Stewart, Marc Brierley, Al Jones, Keith Riley, Bill Fay, Tony Hazzard, Dave Morgan, Phil Cordell, Ray Dorset, Graham Gouldman, Mike Heron, and many others! ✨✧ Max RichterThree Worlds – Music From Woolf Works ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon, 2017. Used ... $12.99
A beautiful larger concept work from Max Richter – based on the writings of Virginia Woolf, which are read at three short points in the set – to introduce the kind of subtle sonic spectrums that we've really come to love in Richter's music! The album mixes together Max's own sounds on piano and modular synthesizer with the larger sounds of the German Film Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler – plus shorter string quartet passages, and occasional solo cello, violin, and soprano voice – layered together in Richter's own studio, with that post-performance sensitivity that's made him one of the key forces transforming the sound of classical performance on record. Gillian Anderson reads some text on "The Waves", Sarah Sutcliffe makes an appearance on "Orlando", and the voice of Woolf herself is heard on "Mrs Dalloway" – but most of the album is instrumental. Wynton MarsalisLevee Low Moan – Soul Gestures In Southern Blue Vol 3 ... CD
Columbia, 1991. Used ... $2.99
The last chapter in Wynton Marsalis' Soul Gestures trilogy of the early 90s – and like the others, it's a set with its own sort of sound and feeling – another illustration of the many talents of Marsalis at the time! Despite the "levee" reference in the title, the work's hardly the down-home effort you might expect – and instead, the tracks are long, freewheeling numbers played with a bit more soul than some of Wynton's earlier work, yet still a relatively modern sensibility overall. Nobody lets their hair down too much here, but the album's also nicely free of the sort of cliches you might expect from the project – none of the fake Crescent City modes that might hurt the date. Players include Marcus Roberts on piano, Wes Anderson on alto, Todd Williams on tenor and soprano, Reginald Veal on bas, and Herlin Riley on drums. Titles include "Jig's Jig", "Levee Low Moan", "In The House Of Williams", and "Superb Starling". CD

Rich PerryHappy Destiny ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Darkly moody sounds from Rich Perry – a tenorist who's got a great way of sliding from note to note, often with energy that almost feels effortless, but which also has a nice sort of tension along the way! This quality is never too overstated – as it might have been in saxophonists from a decade or two back – and instead, it's maybe this sort of secret voice that comes from the way that Perry puts things together, and which seems to hint at an even deeper current his work, one that bears plenty of repeated listenings to discern. The rest of the group is very well-matched too – Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums – working their way through original Perry compositions that include "Iron Buddha", "Everything Hurts", "Plant Based", "Happy Destiny", "Luft", "Recoleta", "Rebellion Dawgs", and "Long Dark Spring". Two of the greatest contemporary baritone saxophonists – going head to head on a date that would have made older giants like Pepper Adams or Serge Chaloff very proud! There's a no-nonsense boppish vibe to the date – and although both players get lots of room to solo, the tracks aren't handled in some extended "battle" mode – and are instead nicely compact, usually around the 6 minute mark – with romping rhythm from Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums! Titles include four Horace Silver tunes, plus more from Red Prysock, Freddie Hubbard, and Cuber himself – cuts that include "Nica's Dream", "Little Sunflower", "Intervals", "Split Kick", "Lover", "Damn Right Blues", and "That's The Groovy Thing". Ernestine AndersonBig City ... CD
Concord, 1983. Used ... $13.99
Ernestine Anderson at the height of her powers – caught during a very successful run at Concord Records, where she was easily one of the hippest things going down at the time! The group here is a trio, and very tight – Hank Jones on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums – all shifting easily to fit the mood and personal demeanor of Anderson's performance, which is a fair bit more dynamic than other jazz singers of the period. In a way, the record's got a similar feel to Lorez Alexandria's albums from the time – hip soul jazz vocals at its best, with just the right twists, turns, and rhythmic impulses to keep things interesting – but not enough to goof things up too much! Titles include "Big City", "Welcome To The Club", "All Blues", "All I Need Is You", "Spring Is Here", and "I'll Never Pass This Way Again". CD

Ernestine AndersonLive From Concord To London ... LP
Concord, 1978. Very Good ... $4.99
70s live material from singer Ernestine Anderson – half from the Concord Jazz Festival, half from a London performance at Ronnie Scott's – hence the title! The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. Titles include "Stormy Monday", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Love For Sale", and a long "Ellington Medley". LP, Vinyl record album

Fred Anderson & Steve McCallVintage Duets – Chicago 1/11/80 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1980. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
An amazing recording finally sees the light of day – a beautiful set of duets between Fred Anderson on tenor and Steve McCall on percussion – both very important players of the second wave of AACM musicians in the 70s, even though both artists never fully got their due! The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! McCall is great too – a sensitive soul, but a strong force throughout – as the duo improvise on two long tracks, "Within" and "Wandering". CD

The first new studio recording by tenorist Fred Anderson since 1980 – and a set that shows just how much he'd grown in the intervening years! Here, Fred's newly alive with a younger Chicago group – a great quartet with Jim Baker on piano, Harrison Baker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – all players openly fluid to move with Anderson from swinging passages to freer ones – a beautiful balance of soul and experimentation, captured in a way that maybe links Fred more closely to Von Freeman than any other record in his career – yet which still captures all the AACM vitality in his music too. Titles include "Birdhouse", "Bernice", "Like Sonny", and "Waiting For Me". CD

Marilyn Crispell/Fred Anderson/Hamid DrakeDestiny ... CD
Okka Disk, 1995. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A hell of a set from the comeback years of tenorist Fred Anderson on record – a date that has Fred on tenor with familiar drummer Hamid Drake – joining pianist Marilyn Crispell during a special live performance on a visit to Chicago! The set's very much in the Crispell mode – produced and presented in a manner that's more like some of her records than Fred's – and the freewheeling piano work of the legend really seems to push Anderson on to even bolder moments than some of his other records from the time, but always balanced with the kind of sensitivity that makes him so great, easily echoed by Drake's work on percussion – and balanced out with that sense of space that has always kept us interested in Crispell's music over the decades. Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages". An album with an evocative title, but one that really fits the music – as the piano work of Harold Danko is very open and organic – seeded in space in a really nice way, and then blossoming beautifully as the tunes move on! The group has the rhythm duo of Jay Anderson on bass and Jeff Hirshfield at the core – both players who match the open, almost speculative energy of Danko's piano at points – but the group also features the tenor of Rich Perry, which provides a more firm grounding at all the right moments – a sonic element that really lets things grow. WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely". Marisa MonteRose & Charcoal ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... About July 21, 2021 (delayed)
When this album was first issued in the mid 90s by EMI, it quietly glided onto the market, with very little effect. Over the past few years, though, the record has slowly been championed by a large number of American critics and musicians, and has come to be one of the most critically acclaimed releases by a Brazilian musician in recent years. The album's a mix of jazz-tinged vocal tracks by Marisa, with a style that certainly owes something to earlier Brazilian singers like Gal Costa or Joyce, but which also has lots of its own nice touches. Arto Linday produced the set, and Marisa runs through a batch of songs that includes versions of Lou Reed's "Pale Blue Eyes", Arnaldo Antunes "Deepest Night", Jorge Ben's "Balanca Pema", and her own "Enquanto Isso", sung with Laurie Anderson. There's also loads of guests on the album – like Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, and others! CD

The music is jazz, but of the most forward-thinking type – and titles include "Ma & Dad", "Fred Anderson & A Half", "Twelve Eighteen West", "Georgia", "Spocky Chainsey Has Re-Emerged", "The One Who Endures", "Baker's Dozen", "View From The Moon", "You Are Free To Choose", "Paris", "Collant Denier", and "Sprouts". That's definitely the case here, as Soskin's piano brings out all these great qualities in the tenor of Rich Perry – warming him up a bit, but also making the best use of his raspy edge – in the company of Jay Anderson on bass and Matt Wilson on drums! Allen ToussaintWhat Is Success – The Scepter & Bell Recordings (Toussaint – plus singles) ... CD
Scepter/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by Allen Toussaint – his legendary Toussaint album for Scepter (aka Whisper To A Scream) – plus some rare late 60s singles that have never been on CD before! The core album is amazing – Allen Toussaint's first big move as a solo act, and the start of some great fame that would blossom even more strongly in the 70s! This indie effort has a rougher edge than Allen's later albums at Warner Brothers – a sly, wicked slow funk approach that's a real transformation of the older New Orleans groove for a hipper, more contemporary 70s audience. The instrumentation is relatively lean – with lots of nice organ and piano lines alongside slow-stepping and vamping rhythms – and the set was actually recorded in LA, but still has very strong roots in New Orleans! Titles include the classic "From A Whisper To A Scream", plus "Working In A Coal Mine", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "What Is Success", "Either", "Pickles", and "Louie" – a few of which are hip piano instrumentals! 17 track CD completes the genius of this point in Toussaint's career – by adding in some killer funky singles – including "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "Gotta Travel On", "We The People", "I've Got That Feelin Now", "Tequila", and "Hands Christiananderson". Ace (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A very cool volume of this excellent series of Louisiana sounds – one that mixes rare and unreleased tracks from the late 50s from equally great 70s sounds – all with a unified bluesy groove that really makes the whole thing come together nicely! The 70s tracks have a style that's much more old school than some of the blues recordings from other scenes at the time! Most of this music could be of late 50s or early 60s vintage, given the approach – which often electrifies the guitar, sometimes throws in a harmonica solo, and usually keeps the rhythms as raw as the production – holding onto an edge that was often missing from more commercial blues productions of the period! There's also a number of cuts by artists you might also know from zydeco work, but who are definitely working here as blues musicians – really showing the link between the two styles. Some of the older music is from the Flyright label – those great JD Miller recordings from the farther reaches of the scene – and also includes some unreleased tracks, too. Package features 28 tracks in all – with titles that include "I'm Not Jiving" by Juke Boy Bonner, "I'm A Lucky Lucky Man" by Henry Gray, "She's Gone" by Schoolboy Cleve, "Wild About My Baby" by Slim Harpo, "No Use To Worry" by Lonesome Sundown, "Oh Yeah She's Gone" by Boozoo Chavis, "I Told My Little Woman" by Lazy Lester, "Late Hour Blues" by Henry Clement, "Night & Day My Love" by Clifton Chenier, "Frankie & Johnny" by Jimmy Anderson, and "Sitting Here Alone" by Johnny Sonnier. VariousGodfather's R&B – James Brown's Productions 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Smash/BGP (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A host of wonderful work produced by James Brown – most of it by a range of different singers, and one by The Godfather himself! The collection brings together some of the earliest James Brown productions – mid 60s tracks recorded for King and Smash Records, most of which aren't nearly as well known as later JB productions for the People and Polydor labels! As with that later work, all the grooves here are right in the same territory that James was hitting himself – upbeat, funky, and stone out of sight soul – all with plenty of rough edges, and backings from the same tight core of musicians that were helping out Brown on his recordings. The package is a real treasure – and is a great complement to the James Brown Singles collections from the Hip-O Select label – proof that even in these early days, James was clearly the hardest working man in show business – given all his time in the studio with other artists! 22 tracks in all – including "I Found Out" and "I'll Keep Pressing On" by Bobby Byrd, "That's When I Cry" and "If You Don't Think" by Anna King, "I Don't Care" and "Unexplainable" by Dizzy Jones, "Got No Excuse" and "If You Don't Work You Can't Eat" by James Crawford, "Do You Really Want To Rescue Me (part 1)" by Elsie Mae, "Lookie Lookie Lookie" by The Jewells, "Wide Awake In A Dream" and "Nobody Cares" by Vicki Anderson, "Devil's Den" by The Poets, "It Hurts To Be In Love" by Yvonne Fair, "That's The Spirit" by Rev Willingham, "Faith" by The Five Royales, "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery, "Soul Food (parts 1 & 2)" by Al Brisco Clark, and "New Breed (The Boo Ga Loo) (part 1)" by James Brown. Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Barbara Dennerlein looks like she's in some fashion ad on the cover, but the organist is very much a top-shelf musician throughout – working here in all these new modes for the Hammond, at a level that made her a key force in helping to raise the instrument back to prominence in the 90s! All tracks are originals, and the sound has echoes of older soul jazz modes, but also all these new ideas from jazz of the 80s – served up with some especially nice touches from Ray Anderson on trombone, in a quintet that also includes Bob Berg on tenor, Mitch Watkins on guitar, and Dennis Chambers on drums. Titles include "Three Hearts", "That's Me", "Grandfather's Funk", "Dancing Shoes", "One For Miss D", and "Downtown NY". CD

✨✧ Junius PaulIsm ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from the contemporary Chicago scene – one that both gives bassist Junius Paul his first showcase as a leader, and underscores the richly collaborative energy in which the musician works! The set was recorded at various points in the Windy City underground – with Paul at the help of a shifting lineup that includes Makaya McCraven on drums, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Justin Dillard on piano and keyboards, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Isaiah Spencer on drums, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Tomeika Reid on cello – with most musicians also handling other instruments too, in a continuation of an AACM legacy – on a record that's then edited by Makaya McCraven, in the best International Anthem mode! ✨✧ Mark SoskinBallad For A Rainy Afternoon ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mark Soskin has always been a pianist with a wonderful sense of tone – sometimes gentle, sometimes more bright – but always with this special sort of sparkle that seems to pull his other bandmates into this distinct sonic space that's really wonderful! That's definitely the case here, as Soskin's piano brings out all these great qualities in the tenor of Rich Perry – warming him up a bit, but also making the best use of his raspy edge – in the company of Jay Anderson on bass and Matt Wilson on drums! The tunes often have a subtle sort of dynamism, a quality that might also come from the Soskin compositions that dominate the set – titles that include "Floating", "Lefty", "Ballad For A Rainy Afternoon", "One Hopeful Day", "Throwing Caution To The Wind", and "Man Behind The Curtain". ✨✧ Yes90125 ... LP
Atco, 1983. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album of surprising brilliance – recorded late in the career of Yes, but one of the group's biggest hits ever! And while we've always been fans of Anderson, Squire, & Co, we're also ready to admit that the real star here is Trevor Horn – who produced the album and put the whole thing together with the kind of choppy feel as his best early productions for ZTT, especially work by Art Of Noise. The album's "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" still has a great resonance to our ears as a street-grooving number from the electro years – even despite its chart and radio fame at the time – and other tracks on the album follow in a nicely similar groove. Other titles include "Hold On", "It Can Happen", "Cinema", "Leave It", "Our Song", "City of Love", and "Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

Spring has come early, and maybe Christmas too – as this set from tenorist Anthony Ferrara is quite a musical present – filled with wonderful original tunes composed by the leader, all graced with these very personal lines and inflections on tenor sax! Ferrara's got a way of spacing out his notes that's really unique, and sometimes can twist things right on the edge – balanced nicely with the more lyrical piano work of Gary Versace, who plays here alongside bass from Jay Anderson and drums from Billy Drummond. The set's full of all original tunes from Ferrara – including "Wind Up Blues", "Belle Daze", "Mind Stutter", "Sitting In Karma", "Slither In Slither Out", "Old York Maze", and "Early Spring" – and the set also features a great long take on "Emily" too. ✨✧ Stephen RileyFriday The 13th ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great pairing on this set – a record that sparkles not just from the rich tenor sound of Stephen Riley, but also from the very distinct cornet work of Kirk Knuffke! Knuffke's got this breathy, almost mouthy style on the instrument – which makes both a balance to the depth of Riley's reedwork, and also a contrast with his sharpness – so that the pair together work this kind of wide-voiced magic that's really wonderful – before each breaks off into solos of their own! There's no piano in the group, either – just the bass of Jay Anderson and drums of Billy Drummond – which means that you really get to hear plenty of horn interplay on the longish tracks on the set. Titles include "Four", "Love For Sale", "Gingerbread Boy", "Hoe Down", "Round Midnight", "Willisee", and "Freedom Jazz Dance". CD

Fred AndersonFred Anderson Quartet – Live Vol 5 ... CD
FPE, 1994. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A fantastic live document of the genius of Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson – captured here with an excellent group that soar with the same boundless energy as their leader! Anderson is blowing at his very own Velvet Lounge club on the south side of the city – but he's hardly laidback and relaxed – as the energy here is beautifully tight, even as the songs are very freewheeling and stretched out – driven with great rhythm work by Tatsu Aoki on bass and Hamid Drake on drums, and topped with tremendous trumpet from guest Toshinori Kondo, who also adds in some great electronics too! Anderson is amazing – very much at that level that made him one of the great under-discovered giants on the Chicago scene, finally getting attention during this period of his career – and beautifully brought to life again on this recording that finally sees release twenty five years after its recording. Titles include "Analog Breakdown", "Era Of Rocks", and "Probability Distribution". CD

Tim J AndersonMaking Easy Listening – Material Culture & Postwar American Recording ... Book
University Of Minnesota Press, 2006. New Copy ... $3.99 25.00
A very deep look at the rise of easy listening in the postwar years – the transformation of instrumental styles to a particular kind of mood music that had a huge rise in sales during the 50s and 60s! Author Tim Anderson looks at a wide number of factors here – including workings of the musicians unions and record industry, as well as the larger discourse on sound aesthetics in the hi-fi generation – all with ties to the larger political and social climate of the time. The book's written from an academic perspective, and is clearly the amount of a great deal of research – and comes with copious amounts of notes that also point the way towards lots of future reading. 236 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Possibly the greatest album so far from Ken Vandermark's Territory Band – a live performance that has the ensemble joined by legendary Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson! The work here is one long composition – "Collide" – written and directed by Vandermark, played by the largeish ensemble, and featuring improvised passages by Anderson over the top. Instrumentation includes trumpet from Axel Doerner, percussion from Paul Lytton and Paal Nilssen-Love, electronics by Lasse Marhaug, piano by Jim Baker, and reeds by Vandermark, Dave Rempis, and Fredrik Ljungkvist – and the concert was recorded with great acoustics in Chicago's Millenium Park. ✨✧ Marisa AndersonCloud Corner ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Completely captivating work from Marisa Anderson – an instrumentalist who could easily match the groundbreaking sound of Takoma Records in the 60s with her work on albums like this! Marisa's a guitarist at heart – and mostly plays electric and acoustic on the record, using the instrument in this spare, open sort of way – far from American roots, but also very American at the same time – informed by all the modern changes on the instrument in the hands of the acoustic underground in recent decades, but delivered with a very down-to-earth approach that's extremely beautiful. Anderson plays a few other instruments over the course of the record – including a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano – bu the guitar dominates, in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Lift", "Sanctuary", "Surfacing", "Cloud Corner", "Sun Song", "Lament", "Slow Ascent", and "Pulse". Concord, 1984. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A sweetly stepping session of bluesy jazz vocals from Jeannie Cheatham – outwardly a trad-oriented record, but done here with some nice light west coast touches that really capture the best of the Concord groove of the early 80s. There's a gentle swing to the tracks that reminds us of some of the Ernestine Anderson Concord work from the period, and Jeannie plays a bit of piano as well as sings – and is joined by Jimmy on bass trombone, Red Callender on bass and tuba, and Charles McPherson on alto sax. Wynton MarsalisCiti Movement ... CD
Columbia, 1993. Used 2 CDs ... $3.99
A nice little take on the "city symphony" mode that was big in American music a few decades back – served up by the Wynton Marsalis Septet of the early 90s, with decidedly modern touches! The double-length album's a three-tiered affair – with part one standing out as Wynton's extended "Cityscape" – a tribute to New York, done in styles that range from mellow and contemplative, to more hustling and bustling, in true speed of the city. Next up is another suite of tracks titled "Transatlantic Echoes" – work that's still jazz-based, but with a nod to African roots in some of the percussion and phrasing. Last up is "Some Present Moments Of The Future" – the final suite of the album, and one that almost echoes some of the rootsier modes explored by Wynton in his southern trilogy of a few years before. Players include Wynton on trumpet, Todd Williams on tenor and soprano sax, Wes Anderson on alto, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, Reginald Veal on bass, Herlin Riley on drums, and Eric Reed on piano – and the album also features some guest tenor from Herb Harris and a bit of piano by Marthaniel Roberts. Late Sonny Rollins on Milestone, and a record with some really wonderful horn interplay – thanks to a group that includes an added brass lineup on a few cuts! The core combo, a quintet, features wonderful trombone from Clifton Anderson – a player who really made some of Rollins' records from this stretch light up nicely – bringing in a deeper sound on an instrument that Sonny didn't always work with in the past. The titles, as you might expect from the album's name, are "old flames" – standards worked nicely by Sonny, Anderson, and a group that also features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Tracks include "Prelude To A Kiss", "Darn That Dream", "Where Or When", "My Old Flame", and "Times Slimes". CD

One of the best albums in years from jazz singer Vanessa Rubin – a very hip set dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron, which makes for a collection of tunes that go way past the usual! Plus, in addition to a great set of songs, the album also features direction from Cecil Bridgewater – and arrangements by Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Frank Foster, and Benny Golson – really giving things a soulful swing that's just right for Vanessa's vocals! The whole thing's got all the best charm of her early work, but maybe an even hipper edge – and players include Eddie Allen on trumpet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, Patience Higgins on tenor, Bruce Williams on alto, John Cowherd on piano, and Carl Allen on drums. BGO (UK), 1989/1992. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two Joe Zawinul albums – back to back on a single set! Black Water is funky fusion from the late 80s combo of keyboardist Joe Zawinul – a set that takes off nicely from his classic work in Weather Report, then adds in both a dose of soul and more global elements! The group features Joe on a host of different keyboards – with Gerald Veasley on some very heavy bass, Scott Henderson on guitars, and Lynne Fiddmont Linsey on vocals and percussion – joined at times by Carl Anderson and Kevin Dorsey, who both give the set a full, righteous vibe! Instrumentation is heavily in an 80s electric mode, but warmed up nicely by the other touches and percussion – and titles include "Black Water", "Carnavalito", "In The Same Boat", "Familial", "Medicine Man", "They Had A Dream", "And So It Goes", and "Monk's Mood". Lost Tribes is a record that has the legendary keyboardist Joe Zawinul dipping further into the mix of jazz and global elements brought forth by his Syndicate group – served up here with a really unusual mix of elements, and a strong balance between acoustic percussion and electric instrumentation! The voice is as powerful here as the groove – sometimes song soulfully, but other times used almost more as another instrument – opening the door further to some of the global sensibilities that Zawinul was bringing to some of his later work with Weather Report. the group features Mike Baker on drums, Randy Bernsen on percussion, and Gerald Veasley on bass – and titles include "Changes", "San Sebatian", "Rua Paula Freitas", "South Africa", "Patriots", and "Lost Tribes".
