✨✧ David BowieBlackstar (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
ISO/Columbia, 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
David Bowie's late career peak arrived just days before he left us! The preceding record The Next Day was a solid reminder of Bowie at his fuzz guitar-graced 70s best, while still standing firm in the here-and-now, yet we still sort of wished for more creatively daring work. Here it is! Once again, Bowie co-produces with Tony Visconti, but it's clear from the start that they're going for something deeper and more complex. Chilling bits of strings, keyboards and sputtering beats begin the epic title track, before Bowie's voice comes in like a spirtual guide – approaching Scott Walker territory here – augmented by sax and other cool touches. It's an amazing start to an unpredictable set of songs, each as hypnotic as the one before. The stranger vibe of the opener comes in and out as the album plays on, but there's some fuzzier and heavier bits, too – on songs that are enigmatic and anthemic, arty and accessible. Incredible! Other titles include '"Tis A Pity, She Was A Whore", "Lazarus", "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)", "Girl Loves Me", "Dollar Days" and "I Can't Give Everything Away". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram pressing – and comes a cool blackout sleeve with a cut-out star pattern, too! Includes digital download.)

Tadao Sawai, Kazue Sawai, Hozan Yamamoto & OthersJazz Rock ... CD
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A killer set of jazz rock from early 70s Japan – and a set that's way different than Anglo albums of this nature! There's definitely a mix of horns, jazzy soloing, and electrified elements on guitar, bass, and keyboards – but the themes here are often strongly Japanese, and also feature work on a variety of traditional instruments – including koto and shakuhachi, all served up with a very cool sound throughout the set! Players are a who's who of some of the more creative Japanese jazz musicians of the time – a lineup that includes Hozan Yamamoto, Takeshi Inomata, Tadao sawai, Sadanori Nakamure, Tatsuro Takimoto, and Kazue Sawai – and the record's got a number of elements that make it resonate with some of Hozan's coolest work from the period. A few tracks get nice and funky, others are laidback and spiritual – and titles include "Soran Bushi", "Kuroda Bushi", "Hanagasa Odori", "Kiso Bushi", "Hokkai Bon Uta", "Iso Bushi", "Hietsuki Bushi", "Sansa Shigure", and "Sado Okesa". John AddisonSmashing Time ... LP
ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Mod 60s all the way – as the film stars Michael York, Rita Tushingham, and Lynn Redgrave! The score is by John Addison, and actually more than half of the numbers are vocal ones – featuring the girls singing in series of whimsical tunes that are sort of a 60s take on the Merry Old England style. There's a few nice mod numbers, though – including the really great "Day Out", which kind of tipples and soars in a nice way, sounding almost like a lost tune from El Records! Other tracks include "Carnaby Street", "While I'm Still Young", "New Clothes", "Jabberwock March", "Baby Don't Go", "Can't Help Laughing", and "Pie Fight". LP, Vinyl record album

Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". Mose AllisonCreek Bank (Young Man Mose/Creek Bank) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1958. Used ... $6.99
Like many other 70s reissues in the Prestige/Milestone/fantasy family, this set compiles 2 early albums by Mose. Unlike a lot of his later material, this set's mostly instrumental, though he does get in some vocals on about a third of the tracks. The album features some great work by Allison's trio of the time – Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – simple piano-driven groovers, performed with a slight gutbuckety approach, and lots of sweet down home soul. 20 tracks in all, including "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand", "Stroll", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Seventh Son", "If You Live", "Mule", "If I Didn't Care", "Moon & Cypress", and "Creek Bank". Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1962. Used ... $6.99
One of Mose Allison's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". CD

An early, rootsy Mose Allison sides, mostly instrumental, bluesy piano trio numbers, but Mose busts out with some vocals on an early version of his signature tune "Parchman Farm" and "Lost Mind", and a spot of trumpet on "Trouble In Mind" . He's joined by Addison Farmer on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums, and the instrumental sides include "Crepuscular Air", "Mojo Woman", "I'll Never Be Free" and "Ain't You A Mess". Mose AllisonRamblin' With Mose ... CD
Prestige, 1958. Used ... $8.99
A pivotal album for Mose Allison – and one of the first records to ever feature his voice, even if only on one track! During the 50s, Allison was mostly known for his work as a bop-styled pianist – on records by Stan Getz and others – but at the end of the decade, he really returned to his roots, and began to forge a New Orleans-styled approach to jazz that had lots of bluesy inflections and a much earthier sensibility. This album offers a bit of both Allison sides of the fence – some straighter piano jazz with a trio that features Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums, but also some rootsier numbers that come off nicely. Mose sings on "I Got A Right To Cry", and other titles include "Ramble", "Saritha", "Ingenue", "Old Devil Moon", "The Minstrels", "Old Man John", and "The Kissin Bug". CD features 3 bonus alternate takes too! CD

Mose AllisonWild Man On The Loose ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good ... $8.99
Great 60s work from Mose Allison – a key record cut at that time when his influence was being felt strongly on the other side of the Atlantic – by younger London singers like Georgie Fame and Zoot Money! Mose is almost answering back with this great little record – hitting things with a sharp punch, and a nice undercurrent of soul and R&B – always in that New Orleans-informed groove, with loads of wonderful self-penned lyrics that really make the set sparkle! Allison's piano is plenty strong in the lead, and the album features the unlikely rhythm team of Earl May on bass and Paul Motian on drums – adding in some interesting changes on titles that include "War Horse", "Wild Man On The Loose", "Power House", "Night Watch", and "No Trouble Living". Mose Allison TrioBack Country Suite ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used ... $14.99
A rare early Mose Allison album – a mostly-instrumental outing that focuses on Allison's wonderful talents on the piano – already honed by this time through participation in a number of key sessions with other leaders! Side one of the album features the beautiful "Back Country Suite" – an extended piece of shorter numbers, composed by Allison with a wonderfully evocative feel. The depth of the work is wonderful, and shows that even at an early point, Allison was forging a unique voice in jazz that went far beyond simple work on piano as an accompanist. Other players on the set include bassist Taylor La Fargue and drummer Frank Isola – and side two features the tunes "Blueberry Hill", "I Thought About You", "In Salah", and "One Room Country Shack". Challenge/Solid (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $15.99
Masterful later work from saxophonist Gary Bartz – proof that he kept on growing and maturing his style after his initial explosive years in the 70s! This album is a bit more subtle than those righteous classics, but still carries a lot of message in the music – a suite of tracks composed by Gary Bartz and pianist Larry Willis – whose sharp-yet-round tones are a perfect accompaniment to Gary in the quartet alongside the bass of Buster Williams and the drums of Ben Riley! And yes, there's no vocals, nor funky bits – but the maturing power of Gary's message really comes through loud and clear – on titles that include "Children Of Harlem", "Tico Tico", "Amos & Andy Theme", "Heavy Blue", and "Tap Dancer". Alison CrockettBare ... CD
Sol Image, 2007. Used ... $6.99
An amazing set from Alison Crockett – a record that's as striking as the title and image on the cover! Alison's really come into her own here – emerging as a fully-formed soul star on her own – with no help from other remixers or soundsystems, just totally grooving on her own! As much as we loved her On Becoming A Woman album, this set is even better – a fantastic batch of original compositions that are filled with jazz, soul, and a hell of a lot of feeling – all with a sense of freshness that shows us that real soul music can still exist in world free from cliches, gimmicks, or heavy posturing. The depth here is simply tremendous – and although we always expect a lot from Alison, this album's really left us breathless – and with even greater respect for her than before. Titles include "So Sweet", "Everything Is Beautiful", "Anything", "We Are", "How Deep Is Your Love", "Baby Smile", "Everytime I'm With You", "Love Is Just A Word", and a great cover of "Love Is Stronger Than Pride". Twin titans coming together wonderfully here – with a depth of soul and tonal vibrancy that may well beat most of their other sessions from the time! Eddie Lockjaw Davis is tremendous right from the start – boldly-blown tenor, with all that raspy edge we've always loved in his style – but an even more sophisticated sense of soloing that makes a hell of a lot out of just a little – expanding past his 60s work with Johnny Griffin, and almost finding a new sort of warmth in the company of trumpeter Harry Edison. The rest of the group features some excellent piano from Kenny Drew – who's really the third star of the set, and gets in some great solos – plus Hugo Rasmussen on bass and Sven Erik Norregaard on drums, and just a bit of trombone from John Darville. Atlantic/Water, 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 17.99
The only album ever issued by this very groovy group – a quartet who wandered from Philly to San Francisco in the late 60s – where they clearly picked up the right sort of energy to let their freak flag fly! Yet these guys aren't totally Bay Area, either – as they've got more of the east coast roots that echo their start in the Philly scene a few years before – almost that mix of tightness and hipness that graced some of the best Long Island groups who were finding their way into New York during the same generation. There's plenty going on here – especially some nice songwriting, and a way of appreciating influences from blues and soul music – yet never coming across as a blues rock band at all. There's definitely an influence here of the sound of Stax and Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s – all focused through the excellent production and songwriting of Jerry Ragovoy, who's a key influence on the record – and who really helps make it one of Lorraine's greatest moments ever! If you've ever wanted to dig Lorraine Ellison, this is definitely the place to start – as it's an album we'd easily stack next to the best from any of our favorite female deep soul singers. Mindblowing sounds from Japanese bassist Isoo Fukui – one of a handful of 70s players on that scene who really helped reinvent the sound of his instrument in jazz! Doubleday, 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 26.95
The legendary Iceberg Slim has given us plenty of his own story over the years – but this book is the first to look at the man behind the man – writer Robert Beck, who started as a pimp and became a surprisingly successful author – as well as an underground figure who inspired a later generation of hip hop artists as well! If you've ever read any of Slim's books, you'll know the world that he came from – but author Justin Gifford gets past the hype of the character, and looks at Beck's background and upbringing, his sometimes less-than-successful career as a hustler, and his move to convey the spirit of the streets on paper. Gifford's an academic, but presents the book in a nicely lively style – and the whole thing is hardcover, 265 pages, with some black and white images. Book

If you know both Mose and Vince, you'll know the sorts of material that you'll find within – lyrical and groovy Guaraldi tunes, and soul-drenched Allison numbers – but the approach of the combo is nicely different, and Saft does an especially nice job of making the tracks swing while also bringing plenty of his unique flavorings into play – maybe given a bit more of a groove than we might have expected, thanks to very strong work from Jones on bass. Titles include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Star Song", "Young Man Blues", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Parchman Farm", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", and "Christmas Time Is Here". Herbie HancockPrisoner (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
A nice late Blue Note change from Herbie Hancock – a very different album than his previous sets for the label – in that it features a slightly larger group, and a sound that really points the way towards his directions in the 70s! There's a slightly ambitious feel to some of these cuts – not in a way that's over-arranged, but just a new sort of thinking for Herbie's kind of groove – a mode that's partially informed by the seriousness of 60s jazz soundtracks, but which also has the beginnings of some more righteous modes of expression too. Players are all great – and include Joe Henderson on tenor and flute, Johnny Coles on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, Hubert Laws on flute, Jerome Richardson on bass clarinet, Buster Williams on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums. Herbie plays both acoustic and electric piano – using the latter here in one of his first recordings on the instrument – and titles include "Firewater", "I Have A Dream", "The Prisoner", and "He Who Lives In Fear". George HarrisonElectronic Sound ... LP
Apple, 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A real oddity from George Harrison – a record of abstract electronics, cut right around the same time as his bigger mainstream solo hits! The record is a highly experimental one – a session that has Harrison working with Bernie Krause, and exploring territory that's much more in the late 60s Limelight Records mode than it is that of Apple – which is quite possibly why the label is listed as "Zapple", not "Apple"! Each tune takes up a full side of the album – and builds slowly out of soundshapes and textures, very much in the manner of some of the best work from the academic electronic music centers in the US at the time. And while the album may be a bit loose and unfocused overall, it's actually got a really appealing quality that we love a lot – a sense of free and naive exploration that's pretty great. Titles include "Under The Mersey Wall" and "No Time Or Space". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike HarrisonMike Harrison/Smokestack Lightning/Rainbow Rider ... CD
Island/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Three overlooked albums by British singer Mike Harrison – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Mike Harrison – a wonderful solo debut from the singer who made Spooky Tooth sound so great on their albums, maybe even sounding better here on his own! The album is clearly conceived and put together by Mike – with backup help from The Junkyard Band, who underscore the yearning, earnest qualities in his vocals – spun out with a snakey, raspy charm, with a sound that's maybe a more intimate take on territory explored by Procol Harum. The songs are great, and the whole record has a quality level that really attests to the all-great quality of Island Records at this point – with tracks that include "Pain", "Lonely People", "Mother Nature", "Call It A Day", "Damian", and "Wait Until The Morning". Smokestack Lightning is great solo work from Mike Harrison, ex-Spooky Tooth – a fantastic singer who should have been huge as a solo act – maybe a bit like Colin Blunstone, whose sound with The Zombies was so important, but could never have a huge career on his own – even while he created some wonderful albums in the process! This set's a well-crafted gem through and through – recorded at Muscle Shoals, but with a sound that's free of any of the hoke of those oft-used studios – as instead of bending to southern modes, Harrison uses the ace musicians to underscore some of the depth of his own approach in a really great way. Titles include "Turning Over", "Wanna Be Free", "Tears", "What A Price", and "Paid My Dues". Rainbow Rider has Mike Harrison maybe hitting some harder rock territory than before, with some roots rock moments – more a part of the overall sound of the group, and with some pretty heavy guitars up there in the lead – which seems to bring out a very different quality in Mike's vocals. Titles include "Okay Lay Lady Lay", "Like A Road Leading Home", "Maverick Woman Blues", "You & Me", "I'll Keep It With Mine", and "Friend". CD

Wendell HarrisonDreams Of A Love Supreme (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Wenha/Octave (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $22.99
Pretty great stuff – even though Wendall Harrison has strayed far from the Tribe Records sound of his earlier years! The record takes the spiritual post-Coltrane jazz of Harrison's earlier days, and infuses it with a smooth fusion approach that's clearly an attempt to reach a wider audience with a soulful message – giving the whole thing a blend of soul and spiritual jazz that comes off surprisingly well overall! There's some nice dark edges to the record that really keep things interesting – maybe imagine Larry Mizell producing some of the more off-beat albums on Strata East – and there's a bit of vocals on the set, which also features work from Phil Ranelin on trombone. Tracks include "Where Am I", "Sea Minor Blues", "Take Time Out", and "Dreams Of A Love Supreme". CD features bonus tracks – "No Turnin Back", "Rocket Love", and the unreleased "Patrina's Dance". CD

Wendell HarrisonEvening With The Devil – The Complete Edition (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tribe/Octave (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the most classic albums on the Tribe Records label from Detroit – music that was too heavy for most of the world when it was issued in the 70s – but which has gone onto achieve legendary status over the years! Reedman Wendell Harrison leads the group in a set of soaring, spacious, righteous tunes – with great help from Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, and assorted other instruments, which he and Harrison play in the best AACM tradition. Phil Ranelin's also in the group on trombone – and other players include Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass – and the album also features some spoken passages by the Black Messengers, Oba and Vajava. The whole thing's fantastic – that strong collaborative spirit that graced the best part of the American jazz underground of the time – and titles include "Mary Had An Abortion", "Vol II Angry Young Man (parts 1 & 2)", "Consciousness", and "Rebirth". CD features three bonus tracks – first version recordings of "Mary Had An Abortion", "Where Am I", and "Angry Young Men". CD

Wendell HarrisonReawakening ... CD
Rebirth/Octave (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... $22.99
Later work from reedman Wendell Harrison and the Tribe Records scene – a set that's got a slightly tighter feel than some of his earlier work, but still a relatively soulful vibe overall! Harrison leads the group on tenor, flute, and clarinet – but there's definitely a collective vibe to the music – which also features Harold McKinney on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Ralph Jones on soprano sax – part of a shifting lineup of artists who change from track to track – including Leon Thomas and Pamela Wise, who each sing a bit on the record. Thomas appears on the great tracks "Where Am I" and "Love Dream", both of which have a great mellow soul jazz vibe – and other cuts get a bit more out, and have more of the soaring spiritualism that got the Tribe scene going in the early 70s. Other titles include "Tons & Tons Of BS", "Winter", and "He's The One We All Knew". CD

Tribe/Octave (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... $26.99
Genius work from the Detroit underground of the 70s – one of the greatest records ever on the now-famous Tribe Records label, and a masterpiece of soul, jazz, and righteous spirit! The session's headed by tenor player Wendell Harrison – and it's got an all-star Motor City lineup that includes Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Jeamel Lee on vocals, Charles Eubanks on electric piano, and Charles Moore on flugelhorn. The tracks have a spacious spiritual approach that recalls some of the later Archie Shepp on Impulse – a blend of soul jazz with slight touches of electric instrumentation, some vocals, and a very progressive spirit overall – stepping proud in the new freedoms of the 70s, yet still swinging and very groovy. Titles include "Angela's Dilemma", "What We Need", "How Do We End All Of This Madness", "Merciful", and "Beneficent". Plus, this stunning 2CD edition features the full sessions and rare mixes from the album – 12 more tracks that include "What We Need (first version)", "Angela's Dilemma (inst first version)", "How Do We End All Of This Madness (inst first version)", "Merciful (alt mix)", "Beneificent (alt mix)", "Wife (alt mix)", "How Do We End All Of This Madness (vocal alt)", and "Angela's Dilemma (voc alt mix)". Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison SextetIllumination! ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $19.99
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way". CD

Harrison KennedyHypnotic Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
An amazing solo effort from Harrison Kennedy – a record that's quite different than his work with Chairmen Of The Board, and a set that's easily one of the most compelling albums ever issued on the Invictus Records label! The set's nice and funky at times – the heaviest expression of that early 70s Holland Dozier Holland groove – but there's also moments that have kind of a playful, offbeat mode that's almost folksy soul – hard to peg adequately in words, but touched with these acoustic elements that are quite different than Kennedy's work with the Chairmen. The oddity of the record almost puts it in Rodriguez territory – especially given the raspy charm of Harrison's vocals – and titles include "Night Comes Day Goes", "Gimme A Glass Of Water", "Hypnotic Music", "Closet Queen", and "Up The Organization". Trumpeter Ryan Kisor's got a great partner in the frontline here – alto player Sherman Irby, whose angular tones really give the record an edge! As we love in Irby's own sessions, there's a mix here of soulful and modern that's really wonderful – kind of an open flow on the horns, but this off-kilter edge, too – as if Kisor and Irby are carefully choosing never to get too sweet in their choice of notes, and doing a good job of avoiding cliches in the process. Other players include Peter Zak on piano, Carlos Henriquez on bass, and Ali Jackson on drums – and tracks are quite long and open – a really great setting for a group like this! Titles include "Con Alma", "Enigma", "Blues For Worm", and "Cool & Hot". CD

Pretty modern work from Konitz – recorded in Rome in 1968, with a French rhythm section of Martial Solal on piano, Henry Texier on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums. The presence of Solal especially gives the session an edge – as Kontiz drifts into Solal's moody, introspective mode of the time – playing long, angular, sparely-hung solos that rank with some of his most challenging work of the 60s. Titles include "Collage On Standards", "Duet For Saxophone & Drums, & Piano", "Anthropology", "Roman Blues", and "Lover Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Lavice & Company/EJ GarrisonTwo Sisters From Bagdad ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $8.99
An incredibly righteous album from the Detroit scene of the early 70s – nothing like anything you'd expect with "Bagdad" in the name – even more obscure than some of the city's spiritual jazz treasures on the Tribe and Strata labels from the time – and done for a very unusual theatrical presentation that had a very limited run! The overall vibe is hard to peg – the album's got that very special mix of music and knowledge that you'd get on Chicago gems like the work of Paris Smith or Haki R Madhubuti, or the Black Fairy album – with sounds that encompass jazz, funk, soul, and gospel – but come out with a result that's completely unique and individual! There's a small group on the set – using strong organ, flute, trumpet, and tenor over percussion – and the singers shift between a cool female group called The Intimates Of Soul, other soloists, and leader EJ Garrison, who handled arrangements and production. Titles include the funky "Thoughs Were The Days", plus "Happy & Blessed", "Two Sisters From Bagdad", "Good-By Suzy", "Fantasy", "Mr Devil", and "Yes I Do". CD

The album's got a really classic-styled cover, and a classic-styled sound to match – a great Hammond/tenor vibe that's wonderfully old-school all the way through! The album was recorded live in a small Chicago club, and has the feel of a vintage Prestige records live date – with heavy organ lines from Ben Paterson, who handles the basslines as well – with a Jack McDuff sort of flair – plus tenor from Jeff Morrison and superb trumpet from Odies Williams III! The group's completed by Todd Howell on drums – and titles include classics like "Silver's Serenade", "Dat Dere", "Peace", "Hittin The Jug", and "Senor Blues". Van Morrison at the height of his solo powers – working here in an extended live set that opens up with all the genius for vocal expression and inflection he developed during his initial solo years at Warner Brothers! The setting is perfect to show the growing confidence Morrison has in his talents – an unbridled sense of soul that comes on even more strongly on some of these versions than on earlier takes of the tunes in the studio – especially as they mix with a few great covers here that further illustrate the wide range of inspirations that Van brings into his music. Backing is by a tight, soulful combo – and tracks include "Domino", "Wild Children", "I Believe To My Soul", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "These Dreams Of You", "Into The Mystic", "Warm Love", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Bring It On Home To Me", "Listen To The Lion", "Gloria", "Cyprus Avenue", "Caravan", and "Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket".
