Milford GravesBabi (with bonus CD) ... CD
IPS/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1969/1976. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
One of the rarest albums ever from percussionist Milford Graves, and one of the most intense as well – a completely unbridled live performance that features saxes from Hugh Glover and Arthur Doyle! Glover and Doyle are amazing together – and with that trademark raspy tone, Doyle's set apart nicely, even amidst the frenzy – and Graves is a complete monster on the drum kit, moving with a speed that must have been breathtaking to see in person – at a level that always has us checking the record to make sure that we don't have it set to 45rpm! If you've ever overlooked the contributions that Graves has made to improvised music, this is the record to convince you – with titles that include "Ba", "Bi", and "Babi". Great bonus material too – a whole CD that features the same trio, playing together 8 years before – recorded in New York in 1969, with four improvisations of varying length. CD

Blue Thumb/Big Pink (South Korea), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
We're not sure we'd go as far as to say that Mike Finnigan and Jerry Wood are the crazed hipsters promised in the title – but they do a very good job here of hitting some of the more offbeat sides of the scene in the early 70s! By the time of the record, Mike had plenty of experience on a variety of keyboards with other artists – and he's cutting loose here with Jerry, who plays guitar and sings – while the duo make their way through a rootsy blend of different styles – sometimes even a bit funky, other times a bit more relaxed and down home. At the best moments, Wood's guitar is sharp and fuzzy – and titles include "Down In The Flood", "Hard Times", "Tend To Your Own Business", "Laughing Eyes", "Highway", "Rock & Roll Show", "Don't Cry No More", and "Death Letter". Andrew HillPassing Ships (previously unissued) ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used ... $24.99 32.99
Astounding work from pianist Andrew Hill – a rare session that was recorded for Blue Note in 1969, and issued here for the first time! The work has an extremely ambitious approach – with Hill leading a 9 piece group that includes Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell, Lenny White, and Ron Carter. The tracks are all originals – written with a style that retains some of the modern edges of Hill's earlier Blue Note work, but which also shows him opening up and blossoming into more of a spiritualist jazz style. The larger group have an incredibly unified approach, and Farrell's solos in particular really break out with some wonderful moments – helping Hill to realize the soulful modern sound that he was reaching for in his writing, a style that easily makes this one of his most compelling albums! Really really great stuff – finally restored from tapes that had languished for years because of inferior quality. And the material's never been issued before – not even by Mosaic – with titles that include "The Brown Queen", "Cascade", "Yesterday's Tomorrow", "Sideways", "Passing Ships", and "Noon Tide". CD

Gladys Knight & The PipsAbout Love ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Gladys Knight with Ashford & Simpson – a perfect pairing of two post-Motown talents! Gladys Knight & The Pips are one of those groups that never stopped being great – and later albums like this are well worth tracking down, especially with the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson making the quartet sound so great! As before, Gladys' lead vocals are tremendous – deeply soulful and always personal, quite far from any easy cliches – and supported wonderfully by the three male voices of The Pips. The Ashford & Simpson groove really helps keep things fresh, too – and the set's got a nice balance of uptempo cuts and some of the heartfelt mellow numbers Gladys always does so well. Titles include "Landlord", "Taste Of Bitter Love", "Get The Love", "Friendly Persuasion", "We Need Hearts", and a great reading of the club classic "Bourgie Bourgie". LP, Vinyl record album

Buddah, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $7.99
By the time she reached the Buddah label, Gladys Knight had already recorded for many years and other labels, but that didn't stop her and The Pips from having an extremely successful run during their stay there – as is evidenced by the great selection of hits on this set! The album includes the super-huge "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", plus the sophisticated soul reworking of "Try To Remember" mixed with "The Way We Were". Also includes 2 nice Curtis Mayfield cuts – "Make Yours A Happy Home" and "On & On"! LP, Vinyl record album

SOUL, 1967. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A great resurgence in the career of Gladys Knight – her debut for Motown Records, and the beginning of a new wave of sophistication and soul in her sound! The style here is much more polished than the R&B-tinged feel of her earlier recordings – a warmly growing sound that really set a new level for countless other soul acts in the 70s – especially in the way that her lead vocals are given full support by The Pips. Production is by Norman Whitfield, Johnny Bristol, and Harvey Fuqua – who all give Gladys a wonderfully full set of backings – and titles include her original recording of "Heard It Through The Grapevine", plus "Everybody Needs Love", "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone", "Take Me In Your Arms and Love Me", and "Do You Love Me Just A Little Honey". Gladys Knight & The PipsI Feel A Song ... LP
Buddah, 1974. Near Mint- ... $4.99 6.99
Rock-solid Buddah work from Gladys Knight & The Pips – still pretty righteous on the vocal tip, but often a bit fuller and more polished than before! Knight shows a great talent for a mature ballad here – no big hits, but that's part of the charm of the set – as there's a personal, intimate quality to the tunes that also comes from the less-familiar nature of the lyrics. A few more tunes get a bit uptempo – to be expected when Tony Camillo's helping with production and arrangements – and the album features the great sample cut "Don't Burn Down The Bridge", plus the tracks "I Feel A Song", "Seconds", "Love Finds Its Own Way", "Better Go Your Way", "The Goings Up & The Comings Down", "Tenderness Is His Way", and "The Need To Be". Gladys Knight & The PipsImagination ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Very Good ... $4.99
A pivotal album for Gladys Knight and group – as the record features their super-huge hit "The Midnight Train To Georgia", a landmark track that not only had a catchy pop hook, but which spoke volumes about African-American migration in the postwar years. The track's one of those you've heard a million times, but it's got a strength that still holds up tremendously. Part of this is due to great production work by Tony Camillo – who handled arrangements and studio work on about half the tracks – and part is due to Jim Weatherly, who wrote the song, and about half the others on the album. The whole album's great – one of the best Buddah Records moments for the group – and titles include "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Window Raising Granny", "Where Peaceful Waters Flow", "Once In A Lifetime Thing", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", and "Storms Of Trouble Times". Gladys Knight & The PipsNitty Gritty ... LP
SOUL, 1969. Very Good ... $6.99
One of our favorite albums by Gladys Knight – a set that seems to have a lot more edge than some of her later work, thanks to some rumbling production from the legendary Norman Whitfield! In a way, Norman's almost applying the Temptations sound to Gladys here – using fuller bass at the bottom and setting tones that are somewhat righteous – but at another level, he's also opening things up a bit for some of the more personal, heartfelt work to come – almost having Knight sing a bit like an Atlantic soul artist at times, with lots of deep soul overtones on the vocals! The mix of modes is really great – and makes for a tremendous depth to the record – and titles include "Nitty Gritty", "I Want Him To Say It Again", "I'm Losing You", "Runnin' Out", "The Stranger", and "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone" (hmmm...wonder if Bill Withers ever heard that one!) Gladys Knight & The PipsPipe Dreams – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Buddah, 1976. Near Mint- ... $2.99
After hitting big as a singer on the soundtrack for Claudine, Gladys Knight finally got her chance in front of the camera for Pipe Dreams – a record that featured her both as the star on film and on the soundtrack! The styles here are a bit more wider-ranging than the usual 70s soundtrack of this type – a bit of ballad soul, mellow numbers, and more – arranged by Dominic Frontiere and Michael Masser in styles that are a bit like some of Knight's own albums of the time. We like especially the jazzy vocalesey number "Pot Of Jazz", a nice number that deserves further discovery on a compilation – and other cuts include "Find A Way", "Follow My Dreams", "So Sad The Song", and "Alaskan Pipeline". Gladys Knight & The Pips sounding fresh and revitalized for the 80s on Touch from '81 – a batch of tunes both produced and penned by Ashford & Simpson! It's a pretty sweet mix of clean grooving, smoothed out soul gems and others with some strings and kind of bigger arrangements that look back a bit on earlier years. With Nick & Valerie at the helm, you can rest assured some hugely memorable hooks and glorious choruses are going to be big part of joyful soul here, and that does ring true! Titles include "I Will Fight", "If That'll Make You Happy", "Baby, Baby Don't Waste My Time", "A Friend Of Mine", "Love Was Made For Two", "God Is", "Reach High", "I Will Survive" and more. Gladys Knight & The PipsVisions ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Very Good ... $2.99
Sweet 80s groove from Gladys Knight & The Pips – just the kind of record that shows why the group kept going strong for so many years! The classic approach is still very firmly intact – Gladys' wonderful lead, soaring out over the Pips' warm harmonies – a vocal power that so many other groups could never get this right – evolved amazingly here from the early soul years of the group's origins. The approach of the set is lean and smooth, yet turns out to be a perfect fit for the maturing Knight/Pips sound – a mode that still keeps them right out in front of the pack, with a great mix of grooving and sophistication. Titles include "Save The Overtime (For Me)", "Heaven Sent", "When You're Far Away", "Just Be My Lover", "Don't Make Me Run Away", "Ain't No Greater Love", "O La De Da", "You're Number One", and the longstanding classic "Hero (Wind Beneath My Wings)". Steve Lacy & Steve PottsTips ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Steve Lacy works here with one of his best partners of the 70s – altoist Steve Potts – whose tone and phrasing always turns out to be a perfect match for Lacy's ideas! And the duet also get some great accompaniment from vocalist Irene Aebi – who's almost has more presence here when she makes an appearance, but at a level that's arguably stronger and more powerful than some of her other contributions to Lacy records – this unusual manner of vocalizing that almost puts her in the Saravah Records tradition of Brigitte Fontaine, in terms of creativity and moving beyond the boundaries of language. Irene's words are more musical elements than anything else – giving shape to the start of each selection, then dropping out to make the interplay between Lacy's soprano and Potts' alto seem even warmer and more organic. The album features one long track – "Tips" – divided up into fourteen lettered sections. CD

Vertigo/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $34.99 59.99
Seminal sounds from trumpeter Ian Carr and his Nucleus group of the early 70s – maybe one of the few jazz rock groups that was ever able to work with a fair bit of jazz in their sound! Unlike his contemporaries, who often started in rock first, then added some horns – Carr was already coming off an important 60s legacy, co-leading a group with tenorist Don Rendell – so the vibe here is like an extension of that very rhythmic, very tonal modern work – but with the addition of electrified instrumentation – thanks to the guitar work of Chris Spedding and keyboards of Karl Jenkins – who plays some fantastic electric lines throughout! The vibe is maybe a bit in the territory of early 70s electric work by Miles Davis and Donald Byrd (pre-Mizell for the latter) – but there's maybe a farther-reaching concept at play on many of the records, at a level that always helped the group cross over to the prog crowd, and move beyond just a straight jazz audience. Other key players include Brian Smith on tenor and soprano saxes – a really fantastic part of the lineup – plus Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums – and as the albums move along a bit, the lineup shifts slightly, and also opens up to guests who include Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Tony Levin on drums, and Norma Winstone on voice. And although some of the albums have been reissued before, this is the first set to really dive in completely – and bring together material from the Vertigo Records releases that include Elastic Rock, We'll Talk About It Later, Solar Plexus, Belladonna, Labyrinth, Roots, Under The Sun, Snakehips Etcetera, and Alley Cat. Weird and spooky sounds from Oscillotron – a one-man outfit, but working here in sharply cinematic splendor! ECM (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The legendary bassist Barre Phillips has given us some amazing records over the years, including some sublime sets on ECM – yet even after that long legacy in sound, Phillips still has plenty to give – as you'll hear on this beautiful set of duets with keyboardist/electronic musician Gyorgy Kurtag Jr! Kurtag's contributions are billed as "live electronics" – and he's definitely improvising alongside the acoustic bass of Phillips throughout, but in ways that are often a lot more subtle than some improvising electronicians – so that he's matching Barre's amazing tones wonderfully, and offering up a sense of phrasing that's equally organic to the acoustic performance on the record – which comes across in a way that's very different than other "with electronics" improvisation albums, and really lives up to the fragile sense of beauty you'll know from ECM. Titles include "Two By Two", "The Under Zone", "Bunch", "Sharpen Your Eyes", "Extended Circumstances", "Stand Alone", "Forest Shouts", and "Ruptured Air". CD

Esther PhillipsAlone Again, Naturally ... CD
Kudu/Reel Music, 1972. New Copy ... $8.99 15.98
One of the deepest soul sets from Esther Phillips' 70s years on Kudu Records – a set with some nicely gritty grooves and a surprisingly earthy feel at times – especially when compared to some of her other albums of the time! Backings are by James Brown's old reedman, Pee Wee Ellis – and although there's some of the usual Kudu electric funk in the mix, there's also some deeper soul elements too – a vibe that's often a bit laidback and open, almost more Atlantic Records at points – which is a mighty good fit for Esther's wonderful voice! As usual for Kudu, the players are an all-star lineup – one that includes Richard Tee on keyboards, George Benson on guitar, Maceo Parker on tenor, and Bernard Purdie and Billy Cobham on drums – and Don Sebesky's also on deck a bit, to sweeten a few tracks up with light strings. The album's got a great version of Bill Withers' "Use Me" that features a tasty break in the intro – and other titles include a great version of "Alone Again (Naturally)", plus the cuts "Let's Move & Groove", "Cherry Red", "Let Me In Your Life", and "You & Me Together". Esther PhillipsBurnin/Confessin The Blues ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, Early 70s. Used ... $8.99
2 albums recorded by Esther in the years before she broke into big fame on the Kudu label. Burnin is a stunning live set that marked Esther's move from being a loud young R&B singer into an older, more mature interpreter of material in a more jazzy style. She's backed here by a good group that includes Jack Wilson on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – and she moves through a heartbreaking set of material that heralds her later 70's recordings for Kudu. Tracks include "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream", "And I Love Him", "Shangri-La", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". Confessin points back at Esther's earlier career in R&B, but has a nice jazzy finish – thanks to players like Sonny Criss, Teddy Edwards, and Herb Ellis – and the record also features a few more sides from the Burnin sessions at Freddie Jett's Nightclub in LA. Titles include "Romance In The Dark", "I Wonder", "I'm Getting Long Alright", "In The Evenin", and "I Love Paris". Due to time limit restrictions, the CD excludes the cuts "I'm Getting Long Alright" and "It Could Happen To You" from the LPs. CD

Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $4.99 9.99
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Factory (Spain), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
A classic talent from the classic years of Verve Records finally gets his due! Back in the early days of Norman Granz Verve/Clef productions, Flip Phillips was an important a player to his scene as other Granz stalwarts – like Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, and Ben Webster. Phillips recorded a number of tracks as a leader for Granz, but most of that work has never been properly reissued over the years. This set finally corrects that mistake, by bringing together 36 tracks recorded between the years 1947 and 1951 – the complete master takes of tracks that include "Be Be", "Blue Room", "Cake", "Cool", "Flip's Idea", "Vortex", "Milano", "Lover", "The Beat", "Encore", "Cookie", "Lazy River", "Put That Back", and "Flippin The Blues". Classic work by one of the biggest players of the early Verve years – the incredible Flip Phillips, a very swinging tenor player! The album's got Flip working with small and medium sized bandst, with players that include Bill Harris, Billy Bauer, Harry Edison, and Hank Jones. Tracks are short, hopping, and Flip's tenor solos get plenty of space to "wail" – as the title implies! Verve, 2000. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Flip was one of the earliest stars on the Verve/Clef/Norgran labels – a true original, with a hard swinging tenor sound that really found its place with producer Norman Granz. The pair drifted apart as the 50s wore on, but Flip's returned to Verve for this recent session – a pretty tasty outing with a traditional feel, backed by great younger players like James Carter, Benny Green, Christian McBride, and Kenny Washington. The feel of the set recalls the best relaxed swing sessions of mid 50s Verve – and Phillips' tone on the tenor is as right on the money as ever! Sandra Phillips/Bette WilliamsSwamp Dogg's Southern Soul Girls ... CD
Canyon/Kent (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Forget the Swamp Dogg reference in the title – because the work here is totally different than his usual bag – and very much in the best female southern soul mode of the time! The first half of the CD features the rare Canyon album Too Many People In One Bed by Sandra Philips – a heck of a great singer, and even though she only got a chance to cut this one album, it's more than enough to make her tops in our book! Jerry (Swamp Dogg) Williams produced, and the set's got a sweet southern style that puts it right up there with the best work of Ann Sexton, Tommie Young, or other obscure southern females from the same generation – a great mix of heartbreaking soul and more righteous modes – definitely enough to show that despite her deep feelings, Sandra's no pushover! Williams wrote most of the songs as well – but they're quite different from his usual fare, quite sensitive stuff without any of the Swamp Dogg jokes or political moments you might expect. Titles include "After All I Am Your Wife", "Please Don't Send Him Back To Me", "Some Mother's Son", "My Man & Me", "Rescue Song", and "To The Other Woman (I'm The Other Woman)". The second half of the CD features some equally great work by Bette Williams – another singer who worked with Swamp Dogg during the same time, but with a style that was almost funkier overall! Most of the Williams material here was issued on singles for the Gregar label, but the set also features some unissued tracks too, plus 2 numbers from the Swamp Dogg Presents label. Titles include "Got To Travel On", "He Took My Hand", "Now That I'm Gone", "If She's Your Wife", "Can't Win For Losing", "A Feeling", and "Another Man Took My Husband's Place". CD also features the bonus track "Robin Right On". CD

Shawn PhillipsCollaboration/Faces ... CD
A&M/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.99
Two early albums from the great Shawn Phillips – back to back in a single set! First up is Collaboration – beautiful early work from Shawn Phillips – a British singer from that moment when the folk scene was really taking off into all sorts of new currents – but which are handled here by Shawn in ways that are very different than most of his contemporaries! The "collaboration" in the title refers to the work of Paul Buckmaster – who plays cello throughout the record, and also handles these great large arrangements on a few tracks – and Peter Robinson, who plays piano and bass – working with the other two musicians in this spare trio approach on most numbers, which really opens up the moody quality of Phillips' lyrics. The record is very different than, say, some of the other acoustic work coming out on Island Records at the time – and titles include "Us We Are", "Burning Fingers", "For Her", "Armed", "Spaceman", "Times Of A Madman Trials Of A Thief", "Springwind", and "8500 Years". Faces is a set that's billed as "an anthology of music from 1969" – and which captures the songwriting skills of Shawn Phillips at their early best! Right from the start, Shawn was very much his own sort of artist – able to work with modes that go way past any standard folksy sounds you might expect from a guy with an acoustic guitar – thanks in part to his use of an LA setting for some of the recordings on the record, which include help from Joe Sample on piano, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow on steel guitar! Shawn's got a bit of a rootsy vibe on those cuts, and there's a few other titles recorded a bit earlier, in the UK, which feel a bit more like the material on his Collaborations album – a nice blend, on titles that include "Chorale", "I Took A Walk", "Anello", "We", "Parisian Plight II", and "Hey Miss Lonely". Muse, 1976. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A great mid 70s session from keyboardist Sonny Phillips – very different than his early work! Although Sonny was one of the funky organ players to record for Prestige during the classic jazz funk years, by the time of this recording, he'd emerged as a more spiritual talent, with a looser, freer approach, and a much more open-ended vibe. This 1976 session is a good example of that – as it moves beyond simple funky jazz, into a realm that shows Phillips picking up a lot of outside influences, and going for a style that was mellower, more laidback, and a bit more cosmic – while still hitting some nice funky moments. The set was recorded by Houston Person, and features Phillips on piano and organ, with backing by Ben Dixon, Jimmy Ponder, and Ralph Dorsey. One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". Philips, 1956. Near Mint- ... $18.99 26.99
In the immediate post-war years, the Dutch jazz scene was one of the first to emerge with a sophisticated understanding of the American jazz form. Rita Reys was one of the country's leading talents in this respect, and she had a wonderfully cool vocal style that was similar to American singers like June Christy or Chris Connor. This album from 1956 has her fronting 2 different groups – one the legendary Wessel Ilcken Combo, the other an early version of The Jazz Messengers, featuring Horace Silver and Hank Mobley. The Jazz Messengers sides were apparently recorded in New York, and the Ilcken sides are of Dutch origin. Both are great – and titles include "I Should Care", "It's Alright With Me", "Old Black Magic", "Taking A Chance On Love", and "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer set from Wigwam – a later record by the group, and one that didn't get as much global play as their first few albums – but one that really shows the group really honing their sound in a wonderful way! Like some of the best of their Finnish scene, Wigwam really draw a lot from the world of fusion in putting together their sound – focused a bit more on tuneful English language lyrics than at their start, but still filled with all these great keyboard lines and guitar over often-funky bass and drums! Beautiful work from songwriter Chips Moman – a key force on the Memphis scene at the end of the 60s, and a writer whose pen managed to touch a huge range of genres and styles over the years! Chips is maybe best known for the famous songs he gave to Aretha Franklin and others in his early years – but Moman has that special southern style of easily crossing genres, which meant that his heartfelt lyrics were also taken up by folks in country and rock as well – as you'll hear on this great collection that brings together all sorts of unusual interpretations of Chips' tunes! If there ever was an artist to warrant the treatment that Ace gives in its "songwriter" series, it was Moman – and there's plenty of notes on the songs and the recordings to help flesh out your understanding of his genius. Titles include "Promises" by Carla Thomas, "For You" by Gizzelle, "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" by Cher, "Fool In Love" by the Veltones, "I'll Never Give Her Up" by The Canes, "Don't Let It Be This Time" by The Gentrys, "You're Gonna See A Lot More Of My Leaving" by Barbara Lynn, "Okeechobee Purple" by Gary Stewart, "Dark End Of The Street" by The Flying Burrito Brothers, "Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" by BJ Thomas, "Luckenbach Texas" by Waylon Jennings, "So Much Like My Dad" by George Strait, "Here Come The Flowers" by Dottie West, and "Easy Street" by Johnny Cash. AdvancementAdvancement ... LP
Philips/Cosmic Rock, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
Dreamy instrumental work by this one-off combo – a group that includes members of Bill Plummer's Cosmic Brotherhood and Gabor Szabo's late 60s band – all coming together with styles that are even more exotic than those ensembles! The style here is often quite laidback – a bit folksy at points, but still always created from jazz-based instrumentation that includes vibes and organ from Lynn Blessing, keyboards from Richie Thompson, percussion from Hal Gordon, guitars from Art Johnson, and bass from Lou Kabok. Many tracks have that breezy groove that you might find in Szabo's Impulse and Skye albums – but again, with a slightly mellow feel – and the titles here are all original, and include "Juliet", "Stone Folk", "Grass Mass", "Sunflower", "Moorish Mode", "Hobo Express", and "Child At Play". Ihsan Al-MunzerSonatina for Maria (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Salut/BBE (UK), 1985. Sealed ... $11.99
A set of work from Lebanese composer Ihsan Al-Munzer, who you might know from his work with various vocalists – but a record that's all-instrumental, and which almost has the feel of an 80s sound library set overall! Tracks are heavy on keyboards – used in varying ways from cut to cut, but often with a soundtrack-like quality – as if Ihsan was scoring the backgrounds for some cop/crime thriller that was set in Beirut! Other instrumentation is part of the mix too – lean use of drums, bass, and guitar mostly, although sometimes filled up with larger orchestrations – on titles that include "Streets Of Beirut", "Dindolo", "Girl Friend", "Gipsy Nights", "Theme From The Film Almankhtouf", and "Sonatina For Maria". Alessandro Alessandroni/Jessica DuncanItalian Library Songbook Vol 1 – Do You Wanna Get Close/Philadelphia ... 12-inch
Four Flies (Italy), 1976/2021. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $14.99
A really great little single – one that takes a famous older theme from Italian sound library giant Alessandro Alessandroni, and turns it into a fantastic soul cut with vocals by Jessica Duncan! This isn't a cheapo "soundtrack remix" cut – as the tune's rebuilt right from the start, with these cool offbeat keyboards over a rock-solid bassline, while Jessica spins out the lyric with a really seductive vibe! "Philadelphia" is more classic-styled sound library funk – a hip piano line at the start, just waiting to be sampled – while a bassline dips in and out next to funky drums – before the tune all comes together and hits this wicked midtempo funky groove, complete with a saxophone solo in the middle! A pricey single – but definitely quality throughout. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Early Atlantic Records work from the great Mose Allison – easily one of the most unique jazz artists of his time! Most started out as a pianist with a nicely bluesy vibe, but soon added in this excellent vocal approach that was maybe part New Orleans, part New York hipster – delivered here with a vibe that follows nicely from his earlier recordings for Columbia and Prestige Records! The sound is nice and stripped-down – none of the larger arrangements that Mose would soon use on Atlantic – and the set features accompaniment from Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. Titles include the classic "Your Mind Is On Vacation" – plus "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place", and "The Song Is Ended". CD

Mose AllisonMose Allison Sings (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Prestige, Late 50s. Used ... $5.99
A hipster vocal jazz classic – a full length Prestige album that brings together all of Mose Allison's vocal numbers from his initial run a the label! Mose started out as a pianist, but quickly won even greater attention with his down home, New Orleans-influenced way of singing – a mode that would be copped by many other singers in both rock and soul for years to come – but which still sounds best, here at the source! The recordings feature Mose on piano alongside his vocals – with only bass and drum accompaniment on all numbers – and titles include the mod classics "Parchman Farm" and "Seventh Son", plus "I've Got A Right To Cry", "Young Man's Blues", "Eyesight To The Blind", "If You Live", "One Room Country Shack", and "That's Alright". CD also features 3 bonus tracks, all instrumental – "Blueberry Hill", "Trouble In Mind", and "Creek Bank". CD

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassSRO ... CD
A&M/Shout Factory, 1966. Used ... $8.99
A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! The set's one of the most no-nonsense Tijuana Brass sessions of the 60s – a tightly crafted album that has a bit more jazz than usual sneaking in on some of the tunes, but still enough of that snapping, punchy rhythmic approach that makes Herb and the group so great! As usual, the fluidity here is the strongest point – as the A&M touch takes a sound that should be hokey, and flips it into something really really groovy through warm use of compression in the studio. Titles include "Blue Sunday", "Bean Bag", "Work Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Mexican Road Race", and "Freight Train Joe". CD

✨✧ Marcos Amorim TrioPortraits ... CD
Adventure Music, 2010. Used ... $5.99
Lovely work from guitarist Marcos Amorim – light, lyrical, and filled with gentle dips and turns – a really great blend of Brazilian and American acoustic sensibilities! The music's not exactly jazz, yet has plenty of jazzy inflections – and the overall sound is warm and laidback, like some of the mellower acoustic guitar ECM sessions from the 70s. Bass is by Jorge Albuquerque and drums are by Rafael Barata – and titles include "Music Box", "Morning", "Amarak", "Bantu", "Portraits", and "Ribeirinha". CD

Darol Anger & Barbara HigbieLive At Montreux ... LP
Windham Hill, 1985. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A beautiful little record from this overlooked Windham Hill team – pianist Barbara Higbie and violinist Darrol Anger – working here in an open live setting that really lives up to the best spirit of the label! Both instruments are used in very fresh ways – moving through that new acoustic underground generation into modes that are more open to new phrasing and concepts, yet without any of the colder, quieter styles you'd hear from ECM records of a similar generation. Instead, there's this subtle sense of brightness, but one that's never too cloying or sentimental – as the players work with a quintet that also includes Mike Marshall on mandolin and guitar, Todd Phillips on bass, and Andy Narell on a bit of steel drums. Titles include "Egrets", "Egypt", "Brann St Sonata", "Pumpkin Time", "Duet", "Tideline", "Near Northern", and "Daughter Of Cups". LP, Vinyl record album

Burt BacharachButch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid ... CD
A&M, Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Forget everything you know about "Raindrops Are Falling On My Head", and give Burt kudos for this gem of an album! Sure, "Raindrops" shows up here a few times – instrumentally, and in a BJ Thomas vocal version – and it's not a bad tune at all. But the real gems are some of the instrumentals – which have Burt almost doing a Tijuana take on his classic A&M sound – in a style that's really wonderful! Our favorite cut is the amazing "South American Getaway" – a breezy vocal scatting number that seems to take the best of the Swingle Singers and I Cantori Modern and roll them into one groovy tune that soars, dips, turns, twists, and holds our dear heart close for 5 minutes and 13 seconds! It's a real gem, and worth the price of the album alone – but you'll also get a few other nice ones, like "The Old Fun City", "The Sundance Kid", "Come Touch The Sun", and "Not Goin Home Anymore". CD
(Still sealed!)
