Marc BennoMarc Benno ... LP
A&M, 1970. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Rootsy rock – but of a sort that we like a lot more than most! Marc Benno's working here in a style that others explored often at the time, but he's got a way of doing so that's pretty compelling to our ears – a mode that mixes some of the countrified undercurrents with a hipper, almost jazzier singer/songwriter mode – so that the bottleneck guitar of Ry Cooder is undercut with organ and piano from Booker T Jones – and the sound's a nice sort of LA hybrid that's neither too down home, nor too slick on the top. All tracks are well-penned originals from Benno – and titles include "Good Year", "Try It Just Once", "Two Day Love Affair", "Second Story Window", "Teach It To The Children", "Family Full Of Soul",a nd "Hard Road". Marc BennoMinnows ... LP
A&M, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A wonderful mix of subtle soul and down home rock – the kind of rare magic that could often happen best in the hands of A&M during the early 70s! Marc Benno's stepping out a bit here from his debut – working with a larger lineup that includes Bobby Womack and Jesse Davis on guitars, and backing vocals from the trio of Rita Coolidge, Clydie King, and Venetta Fields – as well as a bit of accordion from the legendary Nick DeCaro! The expanded lineup doesn't hurt the record at all, though – because Benno's still very much at the forefront vocally and in the lyrics of his wonderful tunes – weaving a way between different styles of the time, and marking a space that should have made him a much bigger artist at the time. But perhaps that's the real charm here – a subtle genius that's bubbled under for years, made all the richer by its under-discovery! Titles include "Back Down Home", "Stone Cottage", "Franny", "Speak Your Mind", "Good Times", "Baby I Love You", and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original white label promo! Cover has some light aging, and a cutout hole in one corner.)

Philip Catherine with Marc MoulinStream ... LP
Warner/KTI (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99
One of the coolest records ever from guitarist Philip Catherine, and one of the funkiest too – thanks to a really sharp edge that you won't find on some of his other albums, and lots of Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin too! Some of Catherine's other records of the 70s were a bit laidback or noodly – but this set's got a strong, soulful drive all the way through – a nice focus that may well come from the production of Sacha Distel, himself a onetime guitarist! But the group's just got things right on the money, right from the start – with some very strong funky drums from Freddy Rotheir, plus trombone from Jiggs Wigham and both bass and flute from Freddy Deronde. Titles include "Bassline", "Let's Put It Like This", "Stream", "Foire", "Face", "Jeux Interdits", and "Memphis Talk". LP, Vinyl record album

Peppino De Luca & I Marc 4Dorian Gray – Rito A Los Angeles/Dorian Gray (shake 3) ... 7-inch
Four Flies (Italy), 1970. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $19.99
Two of the funkiest tracks from the Italian film version of Dorian Gray – both real standouts in a store that was mostly moody and spooky overall! The movie was titled Il Dio Chaimato Dorian – and really shines with "Rito A Los Angeles", a tune with heavy romping drums and lots of cool distorted organ lines – which kind of chomp along with the groove! I Marc 4 handled all the performance for both tracks – and "Dorian Gray (shake 3)" is like one of the best bits of exotic funk from their own great records. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Fred Frith/Nicolas Humbert/Marc ParisottoCut Up The Border ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
One of the most revolutionary albums in years from guitarist Fred Frith – and a set that really returns to the sonic genius of his important records of the 70s! The format is quite unusual – as the music combines live performance with reworked sounds that were recorded for the 1990 film Step Across The Border – cut up and used in various ways, as referenced by the title of the album – while Frith plays endlessly effortlessly creative sounds on the guitar, plus a bit of bass, organ, and piano too. Nicolas Humbert and Marc Parisotto handle the larger sonic landscape and do the cutting up, based on core recordings done decades ago by Jean Vapeaur – and there's a sense of imagination and wit to the recording that shows us that the core spirit of Frith is alive and well! I Marc 4I Marc 4 – 1 ... LP
Seven Men (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
An incredible album from this hip studio combo – and one that's every bit a Hammond jazz album as it is a sound library rarity! The set's got more organ than usual from I Marc 4 – mixed with some tracks that have a great piano vibe too – all at a level that's very soulful, and which feels a lot more like a small combo working the US underground scene of the late 60s – instead of a bunch of cats working overseas in an Italian studio! The titles give away some of the sound – and include "Soul Piano", "Monosex", "Medardo", "Take The Blues", "Low Theme", "Feelin Soft", "Dumbo", "Four Cords", and "Record". LP, Vinyl record album

Marc MoulinSam Suffy ... LP
EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... About August 15, 2020
A crucial bit of keyboard funk from the 70s – a wild album of many moods, recorded in 1974, and featuring the talents of keyboard whiz Marc Moulin! Moulin's since been resurrected and given the credit he deserves – but at the time of release, this rare gem was somewhat lost – caught underneath the weight of more famous work by players like Herbie Hancock or George Duke. The album's got a jazzy groove in parts – and in others it's got a totally stripped down feel, and sounds a lot like a lost David Axelrod album, or a rare Herbie Hancock Japanese session. Includes the totally excellent 17 minute cut "Tohubohu", plus goodies like "La Blouse", "La Bougie", and "From". Plus, this Anniversary Edition includes a 2005 remix of "Tohubohu"! Placebo (Marc Moulin)Ball Of Eyes (Japanese pressing) ... LP
EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... About August 15, 2020
A very cool little album from Placebo – arguably the group's most soulful session ever, and one that draws heavily from American funky jazz at the start of the 70s! The grooves are nice and tight, and keyboards are focused on the most soulful sort of riffs – not nearly as tripped out as in later years, and really doing a great job of sending home the funky rhythms – almost in a way that's sort of early CTI at the best points! Marc Moulin's genius is already firmly in place – and he handles all arrangements, plus plays Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and even what sounds like a bit of moog! Titles include "Humpty Dumpty", "Aria", "Showbiz Suite", "Ball Of Eyes", "You Got Me Hummin", and "Inner City Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $22.99
The second amazing album from Placebo – a wicked mix of funky fusion styles, and a real standout on the European scene of the early 70s! The group's the brainchild of Marc Moulin – who wrote all tracks, and plays a wealth of great keyboards, in ways that almost make him the European equivalent of Herbie Hancock – especially in the way he can spaciously explore a groove! But there's other great elements to the music too – some tight funky rhythms, great horn parts, and some wicked guitar from fusion legend Philip Catherine – whose snakey lines bring a quality to the record that was in place on Placebo's first outing. Titles include "NW", "Plotseling", "Hop Hop", "Tanga", "Stomp", and "Dag Madam Merci". CD

✨✧ Marc BenhamBiotope ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This isn't the first album from Parisian pianist Marc Benham, but it might be the first that really caught our attention – a strong trio set that really has Benham exploding on the keys from the very first note! Benham's got an especially strong touch on the low notes – really making all this resonance on the keyboard in ways that dominate even on the ballads – force that's full, but never overdone – but a pointed presence that really sets him apart from the rest, in ways that aren't easy to explain, yet which come through right away after even just a casual listen to the album! The trio also features John Hebert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, who can be as lively as Benham, but who also seem very much driven by the energy of the leader – on titles that include "Year Of The Monkey", "Pablo", "Con Alma", "La Suite De Fibonacci", "Samurai Sauce", and "Airegin". ECM, 1986. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the leading lights of the ECM Records scene in the early 80s – bassist Marc Johnson, working here with his successful Bass Desires group! The lineup features some wonderful interplay on stringed instruments – Johnson's bass, and guitars from both John Scofield and Bill Frisell, the later of whom also plays a bit of guitar synthesizer, in very ECM-shaped lines. Drums are from Peter Erskine, who's well-heard when the moment allows – and titles include "Samurai Hee Haw", "Mojo Highway", "Thanks Again", "Bass Desires", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair". ECM, 1987. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dark work from the quartet Bass Desires – a combo that draws heavily on the rumbling sounds of bassist Marc Johnson, then fills in the spaces with twin guitars from Bill Frisell and John Scofield, and also features a bit of drums from Peter Erskine! Some of the sounds here echo more abstract experiments in the left side of the jazz spectrum during the 80s – but they're taken into a bit stronger, straighter focus here – and recorded with enough ECM touches to make Johnson's music cross over in surprising ways. A few tracks are surprisingly tuneful, and titles include "Small Hands", "Thrill Seekers", "1951", "Prayer Beads", and "Sweet Soul". CD

Seminal sounds from Placebo – one of the hippest electric groups going on the European scene of the early 70s, thanks to some great keyboards and electronics from the legendary Marc Moulin! Placebo's sound here is a unique approach to funky jazz – one that certainly draws from the electric modes of the American scene, and without any of the jamming elements of other Euro fusion groups – but there's also a touch of rockish inflection at points too – especially in the way the rhythms have a tightly pulsating groove. There's none of the indulgence of prog, but there's definitely a lineage going on somewhere in the mix too – and in addition to Moulin's keyboards, the group also features great horns from Nick Fissette, Alex Socrier, and Richard Rousselet. Great grooves from this legendary sound library combo from the Italian scene of the 70s – but a set that also features some of their more unusual, offbeat styles too! We've stocked plenty of records by I Marc 4 over the years – and have always loved them for their tight blend of jazz, funk, and instrumental soundtrack modes – but this set shows the combo at their most creative, as there's often some cool effects and unusual sounds added to the blend of their more familiar elements – so that the record seems to shift from spooky to groovy and back again with effortless ease! If you're thinking that you've already got some I Marc 4 records in your collection, then think again – as there's a lot of new sounds here to discover, pulled from their very rare limited recordings for the Nelson label in the Telecinesound Studios – titles that include "Giallo", "Tensione Ed Attesa", "Temporale", "Atmosfere Spaziali", "Tema Di Raven 1o Vers", "Thrilling Mortale", "Smookie", "Immagini", "Corsa Pericolosa", "Ossessione Omicida", and "Suspence Subacqueo". Bruno Marini may not be the biggest name in that small group of players of the baritone saxophone – but he's a hell of a musician, and works his horn in a really wonderful way on this debut set! Marini's got an ability to swing with a modern sense of tone and color – a bit like Cecil Payne at his best, back in the day – but also very different, with this human, compassionate quality that brings things out of his instrument that we're not sure we've heard from anyone else! The set features all original numbers – written either by Marini, or the group's pianist Marcello Tonolo – and the rest of the combo features Marc Abrams on bass and Valerio Abeni on drums. Aksak MaboulUn Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1979. Sealed ... $29.99
One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Jacques BrelJacques Brel En Concert (2CD/2DVD set) ... CD
Universal (France), 1963/1966. New Copy 2CD & 2DVD ... $24.99
Two vintage performances by one of the greatest French language singers of all time – presented here both on CD, and on DVD – the latter of which features filmed performances that are simply amazing! Brel was one of the sharpest, smartest songwriters of his generation – hailed by a host of others, including Scott Walker and Marc Almond – but his sense of performance is a completely other side of his amazing talents – very expressive, almost acting – but never in a way that's overdone, or which gets in the way of the sharpness of his tunes! Instead, Brel on stage is a perfect visual accompaniment to that shift he brought to the world of chanson – a way of being committed, but also distant – close enough to feel pain, but with a proper perspective – that amazing balance that still makes his songs so relevant after all these years. The package features a full live performance from 1963, recorded in Knokke Le Zout, and another from 1966, recorded at the Olympia, in Paris – plus a bonus interview from 1971 – all on both CD and DVD. Ceu seems to be an even stronger singer here than before – still able to drift in and out of an easygoing rhythm when she wants, but also more suited to take on tunes with a more soulful vibe – which includes a number of standout tunes that really make the record shine! There's still some of the nods towards older Brazilian styles that graced Ceu's earlier albums, but many of the numbers here sparkle with a more contemporary vibe – never overdone, but a nice blend of subtle rhythms and guitar lines from Pedro Sa – mostly moving at a midtempo pace that's just right for the vocals. Marc Ribot plays guitar on a few tracks, Seu Jorge guests on another, and titles include "Nada Irreal", "Coreto", "Forcar O Verao", "Corpocontinente", "Off", "Fenix Do Amor", and "Ocitocina". Sublime late live work from Bill Evans – a well-recorded performance for French radio, and one that really stands out from some of the scratchier late 70s concerts on the market! Warner (Japan), 1979. Used ... $18.99
One of the few larger group Bill Evans sessions from the later years – an album that features sax and flute from Larry Schneider and trumpet from Tom Harrell – in addition to core trio instrumentation from Bill on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes. Bill plays a bit of electric piano on the set – especially beautifully on the track "Only Child" – and other titles include "Comrade Conrad", "Peri's Scope", "We Will Meet Again", "Bill's Hit Tune", "Laurie", "Five", and "For All We Know". A beautiful pairing – the keyboards of Bill Evans and harmonica of Toots Thielemans – presented here in a space that marks the record as one of the best from both players in the 70s! Some tunes are sad and blue, and very spare – others a bit more upbeat and lyrical, almost taking us back to Bill's more sprightly modes of the early 60s – and the clear, clean sound offers up the best tones from both players in a perfect space. Other musicians include Marc Johnson on bass, Eliot Zigmund on drums, and Larry Schneider on flute, tenor, and soprano sax – and Evans plays a bit of electric piano in addition to acoustic, something we always love! Titles include "I Do It For Your Love", "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Jesus' Last Ballad", "The Other Side Of Midnight", "Blue & Green", and "Tomato Kiss". CD

Fall1982 (Hex Enduction Hour/Room To Live/In A Hole/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... $38.99
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

Gloria JonesShare My Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $13.99
A heavy heavy set from Gloria Jones – a record that features some killer Paul Riser arrangements that are right up there with the deepest Motown work of the early 70s! Jones' groove is always a bit different than most of her contemporaries – not the usual Motown bag, and really far-reaching for the label – heavy funk one minute, more sophisticated the next – and almost pointing the way towards her later association with T Rex, and Gloria's time in the UK. Riser really pushes himself strongly here – backing Gloria with full strings on some tracks, soaring in the trademark upbeat Riser groove – then dropping into heavier rhythms at other points, with complicated elements that make the album a treasure trove of fresh surprises with each new track! Cuts include "Share My Love", "Oh Baby", "Old Love New Love", "Try Love", "So Tired", "Baby Don't Cha Know", and "Why Can't You Be Mine". CD also features a bonus demo version of "I I Were Your Woman" – and comes with a 16 page booklet, filled with notes, album details, photos, and even a short essay by Rolan Bolan – the son of Gloria Jones and Marc Bolan. Notes On A Journey (Germany), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A group with a sound that you'll never be able to pronounce – but with a sound that's instantly accessible, and which goes right to the heart of the matter in a great mix of funky fusion and more rock-styled touches! The lineup is pretty straightforward – keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums – but these guys have a great way of really coming up with unusual grooves and unusual phrasings – moments that clearly have a knowledge of freer jazz, but never go that far out – and performances from musicians who clearly know the world of prog, but also keep things tighter and groovier too! In a way, the feel of the record isn't too far from the early 70s Placebo albums with Marc Moulin – but maybe less keyboard-centric than those sets, and with tight rhythmic elements that also echo some of the funky fusion of the PM Records label. Tracks include "Hoppel", "Hetero", "Bruch", "Zinky", and "Malaga". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful little book from one of the more inspired creative talents on the Chicago scene – writer/artist Dmitry Samarov, who's always got a talent for getting to the heart of the city – and for being very open about what matters, and why! This book is Dmitry's love letter to the Chicago music scene – and maybe music in general – and the volume mixes both Samarov's drawings and words, as he makes his way through shows, clubs, bars, and other points in the Windy City – all while also stopping to take us further back in time, to sounds that inspired him at an earlier age – all with a voice that's very honest and down to earth, and a bit of a change from the usual rock criticism you might read. The hardcover book looks like a little sketchbook, but it's much bigger than that – over 250 pages, with drawings throughout – covering subjects as wide-ranging as Peter Brotzmann, Neko Case, Mavis Staples, Marc Maron, James Blood Ulmer, David Yow, Handsome Family, Low, The Gories, Silver Jews, Joe Jackson, Rob Mazurek, Eleventh Dream Day, Mekons, Evan Dando, Shellac, Mission Of Burma, and countless others – including some film and literary talents as well. Teensville, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Bobby Vee might not be the best-remembered name from 60s rock – but back in the day, the singer had a big string of hits, and a sound that influenced plenty of others at the time – as you'll hear in this cool collection of Vee-inspired soundalike tracks from the time! Bobby's style was maybe a precursor to the Brit Invasion – a way of having the vocals sound sweet, but often wrapped around the twang of the guitar – both resonating with a sense of wideness that often make great use of echo in the production to blend the elements together. That approach is carried forth wonderfully here – by artists who are inspired by Bobby's style, then take things in their own direction – in a big set of 35 tracks that include "Dining & Dancing" by Bobby Pedrick, "I Don't Care Anymore" by Jerry Modine, "I Wanna Be There" by Vic Dana, "I'll Step Aside" by Jimmy Clanton, "Please Don't Cry" by Brad Newman, "Miss Kiss & Run" by Buddy Greco, "Playboy" by The Crickets, "You Have No Right" by Alan Vallone, "Our Love Is Here To Stay" by Don Brandon, "A Girl Needs To Love & Be Loved" by Marc Thatcher, and "Heartbreak" by Joe Melson. Rare work from the legendary funky group Placebo – recorded live here in a set that also features contributions from two other great Belgian acts too! Placebo dominate the first half of the record – and turn in a hard-driving performance that's heavy on Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin – who has this way of playing that makes his keyboard lines all nice and chunky, and a perfect fit for the funky drums and tight horns on the tunes! The group's a septet, with two trumpets, two saxes, bass, and drums – all kicking out a great groove for the Rhodes, on tunes that include "Showbiz Suite", "Only Nineteen", and "Planes". Next up is strongly soulful work from vibist Fats Sadi – a player you might know from his 60s work on MPS and in the Clarke Boland Big Band – sounding great here in a quartet mode, with piano, bass and drums – ringing out out strongly on tunes that include "Burgos", "Gigi's Pad", and "Gospel Time". Last up is guitarist Rene Thomas – a player whose best-known work is from the 50s Parisian scene. Rene still sounds great here – and actually plays with a harder tone and more freewheeling vibe – in a trio with bass and drums, on the titles "Blue Tempo", "My Wife Maria", and "Chega Da Saudade". ✨✧ Janko Nilovic (Mad Unity)Funky Tramway (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Vadim/Underdog (France), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest projects ever from funky sound library genius Janko Nilovic – and one of his most-sampled records too! The albums maybe even more offbeat than some of Janko's previous projects – as it features a studio group, named Mad Unity, with a very heavy lineup of keyboards next to some tight bass, drums, percussion, and even a bit of trumpet! There's maybe a bit more unity to the record, given the ensemble instrumental approach – and there's female singers at a few spots, who deepen the soulful vibe of the set. The real appeal, though, is Janko's mad keyboards – which almost hit Marc Moulin/Placebo level, in the way that they can bring all these weird spacey touches to the grooves. Titles include "Funky Tramway", "Flemish Suite", "Sitting Bull", "Gipsy Funk", "Atomium 82", "Disconnected Song", "Little Butcher's Street", "Fish Market", and "Underground Party". ✨✧ Cossi AnatzCossi Anatz – Jazz Afro-Occitan ... LP
Vendemiaire/Digger's Digest (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Really fantastic work from Cossi Anatz – a 70s French group who play something they term as "jazz Afro-Occitan" – a wonderful hybrid of modes that's even more compelling than you might think! At some level, the record follows from some of the experiments of Jef Gilson along these lines, and maybe a bit like some of the famous MPS jazz-meets-world recordings – but the style is also more freewheeling and open, done with more of an influence from Free jazz at times – and with rhythms that almost point the way more towards 80s experiments of this nature, particularly some from the Don Cherry side of the spectrum. The group features Michel Marre on trumpet in the lead – clearly the lead creative force, as he also wrote all the songs – and the lineup also features Jean-Marc Padovani on soprano sax and tenor, plus electric and acoustic piano, drums, and two more percussionists. Titles include "Al Coltrane", "Sarhaoui", "Bourree Du Ceor", and "Hortus". LP, Vinyl record album

Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 3LP & 7 inch (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! 3LP version also features rare material – from a 1981 John Peel Session, and live tracks recorded in Manchester and New Zealand! Veals & Geeks (Belgium), 1972. New Copy LP + 7" (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Kind of an offshoot of the Marc Moulin world of the early 70s – the self-titled album from Plus, a group made up of musicians from the funky combo Placebo! The vibe is much more open than Placebo, but still shares lots of that group's great talent for mixing together jazz, funk, and trippy bits of prog – all in a way that's never too overindulgent, and always with a nice punch on most of the cuts – so that there's plenty of funky moments too! Drums are great, keeping things very interesting – and the horn passages run from Afro-styled lines with a nice exotic quality, to straighter jazz rock – augmented by some gritty vocals from time to time – in a raspy style that's kind of a 70s update of soulful UK mod styles of the previous generation. Titles include "The Search", "Gimme Some More Of That", "What Did You Do", "Open Letter", "Put Everything Together", and "Enjoy Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album

Light In The Attic, 2009. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Seattle funk & soul in superbly classic form – and it's all new recordings – featuring a roster of first wave Seattle scene figures and engineered by the the legendary Kearney Barton! All the cuts were recorded in 2008 at Audio Recording, where it all went down in the first place, as chronicled on Light In The Attic's excellent Wheedle's Groove compilation – and this all new set features many of the players from the mid 60s through early 70s Emerald City scene, working as an all star band on funky originals and covers! It's incredible stuff, from the Hammond B3 & Moog funk instrumental "Babyback", to a gospel funk take on "Jesus Christ Pose" featuring Pastor Pat Wright (aka Northern Soul legend Patrinell Staten) and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, to the gritty soul of "HOE" featuring Ural Thomas on vocals and backing by the Muscle Shoals Horns, an anthemic spacey keyboard workout on Marc Moulin's "Humpty Dumpty" and much more. Producer Dynomite D does a wonderful job of putting the pieces together, and the players include members of Black On White Affair, Cookin' Bag, Cold Bold and Together, with Overton Berry on piano, keyboard maestros Ron Buford and Greg Davison, drummers Robbie Hill and John Lee Rodde, vocalists Ural Thomas and Broham (Larry Hammond, Leonard Hammond & Curtis Hammond Jr), guitarists Johnny Horn, Herman Brown and Coleman Brown, bass player Bob Lovelace and others. That's no snake oil in the bottle, it's fantastic music from this razor-sharp quintet – maybe one of the most fantastic projects that saxophonist Tim Berne has given us in many years, and a group that just seem to get better and better with each new record! There's a combination of reed and percussive elements here that's really wonderful – alto from the leader, bass clarinet from Oscar Noriega, piano and tack piano from Matt Mitchell, and drums, vibes, gongs, tanbou, and glockenspiel from Ches Smith – all then strung together by guitar work from Marc Ducret, whose range of sounds really matches those of the other players! Mitchell also adds in a bit of modular synth – and titles include "Surface Noise", "Rolo", "Dear Friend", "The Amazing Mr 7", "Third Option", "Rose Colored Assive", and "The Fantastic Mrs 10". CD

Saxophonist Chris Greene has been running one of the sharpest shows around town in the Chicago jazz scene – always tight, always together, and always moving forward with his music – to the point where we're surprised (and pleased) that he hasn't left our city for the coast! Greene returns here with another rock-solid set of his own – blowing a tenor sound that just seems to mature more with each new record, and adding in some soprano too – and working through some fresh originals written by himself and his bandmates – who include Damian Espinosa on piano and keyboards, Marc Piane on bass, and Steve Colrey on drums. The unit is very cohesive, but Greene also gets plenty of space to really open up and run – on titles that include "Three & Six", "Thunder Snow", "Blues For Dr Fear", "Clean & Clear", and "The Crossover Appeal/Uno Mas" – plus a nice take on Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil". Nonesuch/Run Out Groove, 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty wonderful dawn of the millennium effort from Sam Phillips – a singer-songwriter who always seemed to appear as a critical favorite, even earlier on when her records leaned less on artful instrumentation and more on her excellent songs and voice that SHOULD'VE been bigger hits – but here she goes all with an almost defiantly untrendy (for the time) sound that ultimately seems ahead of it's time. Produced by T-Bone Burnett and featuring great players and/or arrangers like Marc Ribot, Van Dyke Parks, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, it's got a leftfield acoustic folk rock vibe unlike anything else, really all in the service of her songs. Titles include "Edge Of The World", "Soul Eclipse", "Incinerator", "How To Dream", "Say What You Mean" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Mod 60s all the way – as the film stars Michael York, Rita Tushingham, and Lynn Redgrave! The score is by John Addison, and actually more than half of the numbers are vocal ones – featuring the girls singing in series of whimsical tunes that are sort of a 60s take on the Merry Old England style. There's a few nice mod numbers, though – including the really great "Day Out", which kind of tipples and soars in a nice way, sounding almost like a lost tune from El Records! Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99
It's hard to get at the brilliance of the 70s albums from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin in words – but we'll try just a bit! The records are almost an anomaly – creative big band records at a time when most folks were leaving the format behind – put together by a duo who weren't really stars in the years before, at least on the American market – but who really found a way to shine in this new setting! Toshiko composed and arranged all the material – opening up a whole new depth in her songwriting – and she also delivers superb piano solos that have the dexterity of her earlier work, but also a new level of complexity too. Tabackin is wonderful as well – fantastic on flute and tenor – and also providing strong inspiration to reed soloists Dick Spencer and Gary Foster too. Emil Richards does a nice percussion solo on one track – and titles include "Notorious Tourist From East", "Deracinated Flower", "Yellow Is Mellow", and "Mobile". CD

Seminal work from one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – the legendary ensemble led by pianist Toshiko Akioshi and reedman Lew Tabackin! The group marks a huge shift for Akiyoshi – a move away from the more bop-inflected small combo work of earlier years, into a rich new role as a composer and arranger – one who comes up with fantastic charts for the ensemble, filled with color, tone, and a great sense of swing! Tabackin's reeds are great too – always handled with bold lines, and a strongly visionary sound – and other players on the dates include Bill Perkins and Gary Foster on saxes, Bobby Shew and Ron Raider on trumpets, Britt Woodman and Charlie Loper on trombones, Don Baldwin on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. The 3CD set features 5 albums in all – Kogun, Long Yellow Road, Tales Of A Courtesan, Insights, and March Of The Tadpoles – and titles include "Elegy", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Opus Number Zero", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", "Strive For Jive", "Village", "Studio J", "Mobile", "Deracinated Flower", and "Notorious Tourist From The East". Vertigo, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
One of the coolest rock concept albums ever – and arguably the crowning moment for Aphrodite's Child – an incredibly hip Greek group from the early 70s – featuring a young Demis Roussos on vocals, and Vangelis Papathanassiou on organ, piano, vibes, flute, and a lot of other instrumentation! Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". Hyperjazz (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching On". CD

A never-issued album from the wonderful Ruud Brink – a Dutch tenorist who's one of the lesser-known players on his scene, at least at an international level – but who always turns out music that we really love! Ruud's got this raspy tone on his instrument that's beautiful and instantly compelling – maybe in the Ben Webster school, but with more of a bite, and this sense of phrasing that's completely his own – flowing out here on a number of original tunes, mixed with a few well-chosen numbers that really display the full range of his talents! The set was recorded in Italy in the late 80s, which makes it a lost treasure in his relatively obscure catalog – done with Marcello Tonolo on piano, Giko Pavan on bass, and Valerio Abeni on drums.
