Hypnotic Brass EnsembleBad Boys Of Jazz ... LP
Pheelco, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 26.99
We're not sure if we'd call these guys "bad boys" – but we certainly love them to death, and their music only seems to get better and better with each new release! The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble first hit our ears over a decade back – first from attention they were getting overseas, but also because they're from our hometown of Chicago – younger musicians inspired by the legacy of their father, Phil Cohran of Artistic Heritage Ensemble fame! Yet their sound is nothing like their pops – as they're a brass-heavy group who maybe owe more to the experiments of Lester Bowie – using their instruments in ways that go far past any Nola-styled reference to the format – definitely with lots of jazz in the mix, but also a highly rhythmic approach that really comes through right from the very first note of this set – and keeps on rolling all the way through. Titles include "My Ship", "Coffee", "Art Comes 1st", "Yo Friends", "Straight Bizness", "In The House", "After Party", "Showtime", and "Soul On Ice". LP, Vinyl record album

Hypnotic Brass EnsembleBook Of Sound ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99
Beautiful sounds from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a group who've matured tremendously in the time that they've been giving us music – and who almost seem ready here to take on the legacy of their musical father – the late Kelan Phil Cohran! There's a complexity to the horn work here that's even deeper than before – amazing tones and textures from trumpets, trombones, euphonium, and sousaphone – all balanced with these sonic currents on guitar, bass, and electronics – instruments used in subtle ways, but to strongly shape the brass elements with maybe more spiritual overtones than in previous years – almost as if the group is growing, and getting even more serious about their message – with echoes that stretch back to the work of Cohran, and maybe Sun Ra's Arkestra, the world of Strata East, and even the tonal colors of Oliver Nelson at his best. Titles include "Heaven & Earth", "Midnight", "Now", "Morning Prayer", "Purple Afternoon", "Lead The Way", "Synapsis", "Royalty", "Solstice", and "Sri Neroti". LP, Vinyl record album

Hypnotic Brass EnsembleThis Is A Mindfulness Drill (black & white explosion vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Jagjaguwar, 2021. New Copy ... $20.99 24.98
A really different sound for this legendary group – still very hypnotic and brassy, but in a very different way! The EP features three songs that build slowly, with brass as a key element, but maybe more in the background than the rhythmic forefront of previous records – letting vocals come into play more than before, and deliver a message-oriented style that's very much in keeping with the title! The songs are slower, but very powerful – and the set features the three tracks "Soon It Will Be Fire", "A Fullness Of Light In Your Soul", and "The Graze Of Days". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black and white explosion vinyl – with bonus fold-out booklet and download. Quantities limited!)

Honest Jons (UK), 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. The set features guest appearances from Malcolm Catto, Tony Allen, Flea, and Damon Albarn – but the real strength of the record lies in the group's amazing horns and rhythms – on titles that include "War", "Gibbous", "Alyo", "Ballicki Bone", "Jupiter", "Marcus Garvey", "Party Started", "Sankofa", "Satin Sheets", "Hypnotic", and 2 versions of "Rabbit Hop". ✨✧ Hypnotic Brass EnsembleHypnotic Joints ... CD
Pheelco, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of work from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – all instrumental tracks recorded by the ensemble over the years, but issued here for the first time ever! The sound is amazing – tight, soulful, and completely different than any other group with the word "brass" in their name – definitely steeped in the legacy of Phil Cohran, but also given a contemporary spin that's really wonderful – with these fantastic colors coming from the interplay of the horns, and rhythms that are often funky, but in a sophisticated way that's very much their own! The group have gotten plenty of acclaim over the years, and have never let us down – but the quality of these cuts may even be above some of their other material, and we're not sure why they've taken so long to release these tracks. Titles include "Vocab", "Oh My God", "Heru", "Linden", "One Hunt", "Ibn Abd Al-Malik", and "Violet Moon". CD

✨✧ Phil Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass EnsembleKelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An amazing bit of music – and an incredible document of generations of creative jazz energy as well! The legendary Phil Cohran teams up here with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a collective made up of Cohran's sons, who follow strongly in the rich legacy of his own Artistic Heritage group – yet in a very different way! Hypnotic Brass have caught the ear of many during their bright rise to fame – with a fluid, horn-heavy groove that's really amazing – echoes of Sun Ra and other Chicago creative legends – yet played almost entirely on brass instruments, which gives them an even bolder vibe. Here, working with their progenitor brings the group even more depth than before – an excellent sound that really spins things out wonderfully – percussion layered underneath the horns, solos taking jazzy flight, and an overall righteous vibe that holds things together beautifully. The album's way more than the sum of its parts – and those parts are already rich indeed – and titles include "Stateville", "Cuernavaca", "Ancestral", "Spin", "Zincali", "Apsara", and "Frankincense & Myrrh". Tony Allen & OthersLagos Shake – A Tony Allen Chop Up ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
A long-awaited full length set – one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff – not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well – a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally – and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk! The choice of artists here is key to the set – as players from other Afro-influenced genres really take a new spin on Allen's music – and are allowed to strongly bring their own sounds to the set. Titles include "Ole (Cairo version)" by Salah Ragab, "Sankofa" by Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, "Kilode (rmx)" by Carl Craig, "Awa Na Re (rmx)" by Bonde De Role, "Mark's Disco Dub" by Mark Ernestus, "Reggae Land Dub" by Wareika Hill Sounds, "Samba" by Son Palenque De Colombia, "Kilode (rework)" by Wajeed, "Ole (rmx)" by Moritz Von Oswald, "Fuji Ouija" by Diplo, and "One Tree (TP's spirit of unity mix)" by Terrence Parker. Rocket Juice & The MoonRocket Juice & The Moon ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Kind of an amazing collaboration – a core group that features Tony Allen, Damon Albarn, and Flea – with guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Fatoumata Diawara, M.anifest, Cheick Tidiane Seck, and Thundercat! The sound of the set is surprisingly wonderful – hardly a cloying collection of common elements in the trio's music – and instead a rich new territory that's almost a 21st Century re-invention of older Afro Funk modes! Allen's drumming is razor-sharp, and gives the record an acoustic energy that's really excellent – and Flea's basswork is astounding too – rough, rootsy, and really dynamic – in ways that have us unexpectedly complimenting him for his talents. Titles include "Lol", "Night Watch", "Forward Sweep", "Extinguished", "Rotary Connection", "Worries", "There", "Check Out", "Benko", and "The Unfadable". LP, Vinyl record album
