Hugo MontenegroGood Vibrations ... LP
RCA/Victor, 1969. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Pre-moog work from Hugo Montenegro – but a set that's still pretty darn groovy! The Beach Boys reference in the title is very well put, as Hugo's using some cool harmony vocals for the record – a chorus that definitely takes some of its inspiration from Brian Wilson, singing here both with lyrics, and some wordless modes – not on every track, but used enough to give the record a really Sunshine Pop sort of appeal! Other instrumentation is great too – electric bass underneath fuller strings, offbeat woodwinds, fuzzy guitar, and even a bit of whistling – which has a cool sort of electronic feel. The blend of sounds is amazing – very unique, and already showing that Montenegro's one of the hippest talents of the 60s. Titles include "Classical Gas", "Rosemary's Baby", "Night Rider", "Lady in Cement", "A Future Left Behind", "Tony's Theme", and "Good Vibrations". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, some marks from price sticker removal, and is bent a bit at the spine.)

Hugo MontenegroHugo In Wonder-Land ... LP
RCA/Nature Sounds, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
The moog wizard Hugo Montenegro takes on the music of Stevie Wonder – in a blend that maybe makes the record one of the coolest that the studio maestro ever recorded! Hugo had already proven that he could groove in the 60s, and he picked up the moog at the end of the decade and started really working magic with the electronics – and here, the songs of Stevie Wonder provide an extra-special setting for his talents – as Hugo mixes in a range of keyboards, including some Arp, with tight studio work from Carol Kaye on bass, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Carolton on guitar. Titles include great versions of "Living For The City", "Too High", "Superstition", "Higher Ground", "You've Got It Bad Girl", and "All In Love Is Fair". LP, Vinyl record album

Hugo MontenegroRocket Man – A Tribute To Elton John ... LP
RCA, 1975. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Groovy stuff! After paying tribute to Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan on other LPs, Hugo Montenegro turns his talents to the groovy compositions of Elton John in this nice album of moogy instrumentals – a set that's got some upbeat material that almost hits a funky club style – graced with loads of work on Arp by John Montenegro! The tune are all big ones by Elton, mostly – and the presentation here is pretty cool, with a very different vibe than the big hits. There's also a few solos by trumpeters Chuck Findley and Gary Barone – and titles include "Rocket Man", "Bitch Is Back", "Daniel", "Take Me To The Pilot", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" – plus the originals "Splashdown" and "Blastoff", which bracket the album in a "rocket" theme. LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing RCA-5238. Cover has light wear and a small trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ Hugo MontenegroLove Theme From The Godfather ... LP
RCA, 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is the kind of moog album we can get behind – a sweet 70s update of the moogy groovy that Hugo Montenegro first started crafting in the 60s! The album's got both moog and Arp – the latter of which brings in more of a 70s electric vibe – and there's also some very cool sound effects on the record too, which really ups the ante for the sort of groove that Montenegro was creating! Tunes are all pretty well chosen – making for a super-dope batch of numbers that really gets past the usual – and the set includes an excellent reading of "Me & My Arrow", from Nilson's The Point; 2 versions of Nino Rota tracks from The Godfather; a nice version of Faure's "Pavane", with lots of spirally keyboards; a medley of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Moon River"; and even a few nice originals, like "Quadimodo" and "Stutterology". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original quad pressing! Cover has a tiny bit of light wear near the bottom – but is near-perfect overall.)

RCA, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Hugo Montenegro's dreamier LPs of the 60s – a mellow batch of instrumentals composed by Hugo, all based around the theme of female "candy"! The approach is subtle, but there's actually some really great moments on here – the kind of offbeat instrumentation that we always like in Hugo's work, complete with odd percussion, nice use of organ, spooky voices, and other nice touches that make this one a lot cooler than you might think! Titles include "Kitten", "Theme For Irma", "Jean", "Little Lo", "Fanny's Theme", "Amber", and "Suzie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugo MontenegroMan From UNCLE ... LP
RCA, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An amazing little soundtrack that's almost better than the show for which it was written! The set's a landmark batch of work from Hugo Montenegro – working here in a jazzy style that has lots of 60s mod touches – traces of spy soundtrack influence, but a bit more straight ahead too – never losing a groove on most numbers, and really working with a wonderful range of rhythms and odd instrumental touches. Even at this early point, Montenegro already shows a great talent for making familiar instruments sound unusual – coming across with odd tones and effects that really keep things interesting, especially on some of the mellower tracks in the set. Tremendous work throughout – with tracks that include "Meet Mr. Solo", "A Martini Built For Two", "The Invaders", "Solo's Samba", and "Watch Out!". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Get On Down, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A groovy moogy classic! This was one of the first records to apply the moog sound in a pop idiom in a major way – and boy, is it a resounding success with us! Hugo Montenegro scores a number of pop tracks and originals in the same cool jazzy style that he used on his best 60's soundtracks, then, he builds in a lot of groovy moog parts, and peppers the tracks with some vocals by male members of his chorus. The tracks have a lot of nice sharp bits that might be used as samples, with good quirky moog moments, and occasional heavy drums. Tracks include "Moog Power", "Dizzy", "You Showed Me", "More Today Than Yesterday", "Hair", and a very cool cover of "MacArthur Park". CD

Hugo's covering all bases here – as he makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! A weird and wonderful record – the early hits of Neil Diamond, played on the moog and ARP by the mighty Hugo Montenegro! The approach to the set is pretty darn cool – as it takes 10 of Neil's best early tunes, and runs them through arrangements by Montenegro that run from funky to groovy to dreamy – and which feature some very strange use of electronics! Sparkling and weird all the way through – with versions of "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon", "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show", "Sweet Caroline", "Two-Bit Man Child", "Porcupine Pie", and more! RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sweet 70s funk from Hugo Montenegro – an artist who really developed a great ear for electric styles by this point in his career! The album's very heavy on Arp – and includes variations on the instrument in many formats – all set to funky jazz arrangements that follow from Hugo's previous Stevie Wonder album – and like that one, offer up his own take on 70s soul! The Arp-y keyboards show up on nearly every track – adding in so many wonderful electronic elements – alongside warmer winds from Don Menza and Ernie Watts, and smooth grooves from a rhythm combo that includes Larry Carlton on guitar and Hal Blaine on drums. Titles include a great cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin", plus cuts by "other brothers", like "Feel Like Makin' Love", "What's Goin' On", and "Nothing From Nothing" – as well as the great original "Noah's Arp"! GWP, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Hugo Montenegro runs through a set of Dylan compositions with very baroque orchestrations. Recorded slightly before he was doing his moogy work, this one has Montenegro leading a vocal chorus that has a We Five sort of late 60's pop feel. The arrangements are very groovy and jangly, and the track list includes "The Mighty Quinn", "Mr. Tambourine Man", "My Back Pages", and "Like A Rolling Stone". LP, Vinyl record album

A very groovy lost relic of the Chicago studio jazz scene of the 60's. Trombonist Dave Remington leads a groovy pop jazz band that includes Les Hooper on drums, John Klemmer on tenor, and Irene Kral on vocals. There's a number of nice tracks that have a cool soundtrack sound to them, especially cuts like "Unlit Room" and "Without Rhyme Or Reason", which have very swingin' vocals by Kral. Kind of a mix between Hugo Montenegro and the Clarke/Boland Big Band – and with a very groovy groove. Other cuts include "Lonly Pircus", "Here's Hoyle", "March Winds", and "Last Summer's Spell". Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A very cool collection – one put together in celebration of the centennial of the Hollywood sign that rises above Sunset Strip in LA – and which brings together a whole host of unusual performances by actors who sing, singers who act, and other artists who made some key contributions to the American film scene in the postwar years! Most of the music here is from the late 40s through 60s period that you'll usually find on Bear Family collections – but there's also some surprises from later years too – a few tracks near the end from later films, thrown in for good measure. RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The groovy groovy soundtrack to the first Matt Helm film – starring Dean Martin as a 60s master of intrigue! Elmer Bernstein handled the soundtrack with a really great approach – jazz, swinging, and with plenty of mod 60s bits – very much in some of the same territory as Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro at the time! And equally great, the record also includes a few great vocal tracks by Vikki Carr – "The Silencers" and "Santiago" – both of which are very groovy numbers that swing with a wonderfully cheesy sort of sound! Other tracks are instrumentals, and titles include include "Tun Tzee", "Tina's Waltz", "Matt Helm's Blues", and "Early To Bed". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithOriginal Music From The Man From UNCLE – Vol 2 ... CD
Film Score Monthly, Mid 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of lost music from the Man From UNCLE TV show – tracks composed by Jerry Goldsmith, with a feel that's quite different than the Hugo Montenegro recordings that comprised the more famous RCA soundtrack album! Jerry still keeps the tense "spy" mood of the show, but he also brings in some styles that are a lot more brooding, moody, and contemplative – really heightening the suspense of the music with some sharp-edged string passages alongside jazzier and more forthcoming riffing from the horns. The beautifully-done 2CD set features a total of 32 tracks in all, along with a great booklet of photos and notes on the music! Titles include "The Iowa Scuba Affair", "Alexander The Greater Affair", "The Deadly Goddess Affair", "Alternate Fourth Season Main Title", "The Pop Art Affair", "Third Season Main Title", and "One Of Our Spies Is Missing".
