Horizon Quintet (Bobby Watson)Gumbo ... LP
Amigo (Sweden), 1983. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Early work from alto genius Bobby Watson – recording here with the Horizon Quintet, a hip group of spiritual soul jazz players that includes Curtis Lundy, Mulgrew Miller, Hamiet Bluiett, and Marvin Smitty Smith. The session takes up the soul jazz torch of 70s work by artists like Woody Shaw, Clifford Jordan, and Cedar Walton – with a mix of modal structures in the rhythms, augmented by searching solos, and just the right amount of hardbop energy. Tracks are mostly all long originals – and titles include "Premonition", "Wheel Within A Wheel", "From East To West", and "Point The Finger". LP, Vinyl record album

JazztronikHorizon ... CD
Tokuma (Japan), 2003. Used ... $11.99
Do these guys ever get tired of making great records? We think not – and this sweet little 8 track set is more than proof of that fact! The album's a slice of Jazztronik's mellower side – the warmer, jazzier, more Brazilian-styled tunes that have always set them apart from most other modern Japanese groups. There's a lot of great piano lines on the set – starting things out mellow, and building with a nice blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation to feed the fire of groovers like "Rita", "Estar Com Voce", "Dance With Me", and the mellower "Horizon". ✨✧ Adam Lane/Darius Jones/Vijay AndersonAbsolute Horizon ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2013. New Copy ... $8.99
Adam Lane's bass is superb here – really shaping the sound in a sublime way right from the start – brooding and bold up from the bottom – never too heavy-handed, but a force that directs the recording beautifully, and really gives shape to the alto of Darius Jones and drums of Vijay Anderson! The approach is quite different from the usual free trio date – as there's these subtle song structures on most tracks – sometimes more sonic than tune-based, but always full of feeling at a level that's extremely evocative, and which makes the album a superb achievement for all players involved. Titles include "Run To Infinity", "Bioluminescence", "Absolute Horizon", and "The Great Glass Elevator". CD features three more tracks than the LP. CD

Michael ThomasEvent Horizon ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 24.90
Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. All tunes are originals by the leader – and titles include "Fox & Cat", "Dr Teeth", "Framework", "Chant", "Underground", "Event Horizon", and "Distance". CD

✨✧ George BensonBeyond The Blue Horizon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the 60s – played by a tight combo that features Benson on guitar, Clarence Palmer on organ, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus percussion from Michael Cameron and Albert Nicholson. There's a version of "So What" on here that's got to be one of the best funky takes of that standard ever – with great hard grooves on the intro – and on other cuts, the real genius is in the way the simple tracks are arranged to shift between darkly chromatic passages and slight bits of funk. Titles include "All Clear", "Ode To A Kudu", and "Somewhere In The East". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – alternate versions of "Ode To A Kudu", "Somewhere In The East", and "All Clear". CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ken McIntyre is one of the many reedman that came up in the late 60's, made a handful of dates as a leader and appearances as a sideman, and more or less fell through the cracks thereafter, only to resurface in the 70's and 80's on Steeplechase. This side recorded in '75, with Buster Williams and Kenny Drew features 8 post-bop originals, in McIntyre's self proclaimed style of "Kontemporary African-American Music", drawing upon the influences of composers like OrnetteColeman and Sun Ra. ✨✧ Sun RaHorizon ... LP
Saturn, 1971/Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An amazing live date from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – recorded in Cairo in 1971, with a very transcendent sound overall! Ra and the group are clearly inspired to be working in the shadow of the pyramids – and their music sometimes has Eastern overtones, a bit in the manner of Salah Ragab – their associate in Egypt – yet at other times, things get quite outside and noisy too! The keyboards are especially wonderful – as Ray plays "tiger organ" and moog, in addition to conventional piano – adding in the electronics with really spacey tones that really push the limits of the music. And some of the reeds really help shape the sound of the songs too – stark and soulful at key moments, but also forceful in formation at others – played by John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Davis on flute and alto, Larry Northington on alto, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet . The group comes together for a tight reading of "Space Is The Place" – and other titles include "3rd Planet", "Horizon", "Starwatchers", and "Shadow World". LP, Vinyl record album
(A beautiful copy – in a gold cardboard sleeve, with hand-pasted artwork and hand-pasted labels. Sleeve has a small bit of tape in a bottom corner, but is great overall.)

A really wonderful album by Sonny Fortune – recorded for a major label, sure, but with the soulful depth of some of his earlier work for the indies! Sonny's on alto, flute, and soprano sax – and also plays a bit of percussion and some slight mini moog – not too much, as the session only has slight electric touches, but mixed with additional Fender Rhodes from Michael Cochrane, which gives the record a shimmering finish that helps take Fortune's reed solos up to the heavens! Other players include Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Buster Williams on bass, and Chip Lyle on drums – and tracks include "In Waves Of Dreams", "A Space In Time", "Thoughts", "Revelation", and "Seeing Beyond The Obvious". Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
A wonderful start to the second decade of this ultra-hip group – an ensemble who started to reinvent the sound of the big band in the late 60s, then only picked up more and more energy once time went on! Thad Jones and Mel Lewis are a hell of a pair – not only great leaders for a session like this, but such warmly collaborative players that they're able to bring together something of a supergroup for the record – with players like Jon Faddis and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets, Jerry Dodgion on flute and alto, Frank Foster and Greg Herbert on tenor saxes, David Spinozza on guitar, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Roland Hanna on both acoustic and electric piano – all key players in a much larger lineup that's almost too big to name! Tracks are long, and arranged with a great deal of depth – but never in a way that fails to swing – and titles include "Forever Lasting", "Little Rascal On A Rock", "Love & Harmony", "Greetings & Salutations", and "Love To One Is One To Love". A spare set of duets that follows closely in spirit to Charlie Haden's Closeness album for A&M – and like that record, a set of well-chosen reunion duets with key figures from his past! The album features 4 long tracks – each based around a different performer set next to Haden's acoustic bass – recorded in a loose style that's almost a bit more spontaneous than the Closeness record. ✨✧ Otis Spann with Fleetwood MacBiggest Thing Since Colossus ... LP
Blue Horizon, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great moment in the spotlight for the legendary Chicago bluesman Otis Spann – an artist who often appeared on records by bigger talents of his generation, but didn't always get to shine this brightly on his own! The album's a very reverent session that has Spann's piano and vocals in the lead, with spare backing from the first incarnation of Fleetwood Mac – a setting that really lets Peter Green show off the bluesiest side of his guitar work, and maybe in a different way than some of the group's albums. And despite any blues-rock fears you might have, the album's a definite blues outing all the way through – and maybe one of the most vibrant that Spann ever recorded. Titles include "My Love Depends On You", "Someday Baby", "I Need Some Air", "She Needs Some Loving", and "No More Dogging". LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent solo set as a leader from drummer Mel Lewis – one that reminds us that he can still cook very strongly away from his big band with trumpeter Thad Jones! The set has Lewis in different groupings with an excellent set of the friends mentioned in the title – a top-shelf lineup that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Michael Brecker on tenor, Gregory Herbert on alto, Hank Jones on piano, and Ron Carter on bass – working their way through a mix of different material that really takes on some great new energy in Lewis' hands – that mix of swing and complexity he forged in the group with Jones, but maybe even more compelling here in a smaller combo format. A different sound than usual from the Fire Orchestra of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin – a set that still features the large spontaneous composition style of the group, but which also has them working with singer Mariam Wallentin – whose vocals really add a lot to the whole process! Wallentin's a singer with a very powerful presence – and a style that's more innately tuneful than usual for the Fire ensemble – which makes for a very unusual, very creative mix with instrumentation that includes Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax, Per Texas Johansson on bass clarinet and oboe, Isak Hedtjarn on b sharp clarinet and alto, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Johan Berthling on bass, and Andreas Werliin on drums. The set also features keyboards from Tomas Hallonsten, which changes things up a bit too – as does the slight use of violin and viola – all of which makes for a record that has the group going way beyond jazz, and opening up a new audience for their sound. Titles include "At Last I Am Free", "I Am A Horizon", "Weekends The Soil Is Calling", "Blue Crystal Fire", "Silver Trees", and "Dressed In Smoke Blown Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Watson's always keeping it real in our book – as the alto saxophonist maybe hasn't made a bad record ever, and has continued to turn out the sort of fantastic music we loved right when he was an up-and-comer in an 80s version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers! Here, Bobby's working with some key talents from his solo years – a re-formed New Horizon group that features excellent work on bass from Curtis Lundy, drums from Victor Jones, and piano from Victor Gould – plus trumpet work on some tracks by Josh Evans and on others by Giveton Gellin! The use of trumpet is somewhat striking, as it's an instrument that's not always in place on some of Bobby's small combo sessions – and both Evans and Gellin are clearly inspired by the warmth of the leader – as both soar out with a wonderfully full, rich sound that only adds to the classic soulful touch of Watson on the alto. Titles include Watson and Lundy originals "Keepin It Real", "One For John", "My Song", "The Mystery of Ebop", and "Elementary My Dear Watson 2020" – plus a nice take on the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free". Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99
A cool collection of really oddball numbers – unusual country, offbeat pop numbers, and a fair bit of cuts that have a popcorn groove somewhere down there at the bottom! These aren't the usual sorts of cuts you might expect – and instead, the collection's definitely on the hipper side of the spectrum from the things we hear from the Stag O Lee label – maybe the farther reaches past Bear Family and Ace records – into the real hinterland of the obscure 45. CD brings together material from the 10" LP sets vols 3 and 4 – and tracks include "Fire Of Love" by Jody Reynolds, "Lonely Moon" by Johnny Wells, "On The Horizon" by Ben E King, "Squaw Girl" by Fatima, "Hellbound Train" by Marie Robertson, "Tennessee Hillbilly Ghost" by Eddy Arnold, "Hard Working Man" by Dorsey Burnette, "Lumber City" by Big Buddy K, "Wild Streak" by Johnny Fallin, "Ghost Town" by Eddie Miller, "Down Bound Train" by Frank Gay & The Gayblades, "Bury Me Deep" by Bill Shaw, "The Living Dead" by Jim Burgett, "Mistery's Child" by Richard Hayes, "Workin On The Santa Fe" by Randy Starr, "Cell Walls" by Craig Brown, and "Rebel Heart" by Larry Hall. One of our favorite series ever of modern soul material – done back in the 90s, when nobody else was willing to dig for tracks these smooth and groovy! There's a great blend of material here – from mellow soul to jazzy funk, with a few bits of early 80s club as well – in a way, the collection's a great illustration of the way that soul like this was kept alive in British soul crowds, even at a time when other folks around the world weren't rating it as strongly! Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You" – plus 2 bonus tracks, "Mellow Dream" and "Horizon", both original compositions! Transatlantic/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of early albums from the great Gordon Giltrap – both released by Transatlantic Records when Gordon was a very young fellow! The self-titled Gordon Giltrap is a gem from 1968 – a record that has Gordon stepping out as a hell of a guitarist, and a very dark-tinged songwriter – certainly of the generation that was budding with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch – but with a distinct quality that really set Giltrap apart from the rest, maybe making him as much of an individualist as Davy Graham! Although just 18, Giltrap's acoustic guitar work is fantastic– and his vocals are much more biting than some of his contemporaries – almost mean at times. Titles include "Window Pattern", "Blythe Hill", "Won't You Stay Awhile Suzanne", "Don't You Feel Good", "Birth Of Spring", "Don't You Hear Your Mother's Voice", and "Ives Horizon". Portrait is an amazing record – at one level filled with mastery of the 12 string guitar has has Gordon Giltrap matching the best of the Takoma generation in the US – but also graced with vocals that are very distinct, very pointed, and which make the tunes with lyrics such a contrast to the instrumentals! The whole thing is fantastic – a true testament to the legend that has grown up around Giltrap over the years – with titles that include "Thoughts In The Rain", "Never Ending Solitude", "Young Love", "Lucifer's Cage", "Portrait", "Tuxedo", and "Hands Of Fate". Spacey sounds from the enigmatic Iasos – a legendary figure in the 70s underground – and an artist with a heck of a great ear for organic electronics and unusual recording techniques! This cool collection of Iasos' music was put together by Carlos Nino with the guys at Numero – and as such, it's got a really sensitive feel – a way of bringing together the sounds and stories that really get at the subtle genius of Iasos – packaged in a lavish set that also features lots of vintage photos too. The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and pretty darn compelling. ✨✧ Juju/Oneness Of Juju/Experience UnlimitedBlack Fire Set (Live At The East/Chapter Two/African Rhythms/Space Jungle Luv/Free Yourself) (5LP set) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 5LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Five full albums from the legendary Black Fire label – a DC-based imprint that was home to a heck of a lot of knowledge and power back in the 70s! First up is Live At The East – a never-issued performance by the legendary spiritual jazz group Juju – the genre-crossing combo who'd later expand to the full Oneness Of Juju ensemble! This set captures the group in more avant formation than their later funky records – more clearly tied to a late Coltrane inspiration, but with some of the energy of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and other creative improvisational groups – especially in the way the members of the lineup seem to effortlessly shift instruments over the course of the long tunes on the set! The vibe is very similar to the Juju albums on Strata East – and this set might be thought of as a chapter three to those two records – with a lineup that features the mighty Plunky Nakabinde on tenor, soprano, flute, and percussion – plus Al Hammel Rasul on piano, Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Ken Shabala on bass, and Babatunde and Jalango on percussion and vocals too. Titles include "Black Experience", "Struggle Home", "At Least We Have A Horizon Now", and "Soledad Brothers". Next is Chapter Two – the rare second album from Juju – the avant jazz collective who'd later morph into funk band Oneness Of Juju, but who still sound pretty revolutionary here! There's a bit more focus than before – still energy that's a lot like the best righteous jazz groups coming out of Chicago or St Louis at the same time, but maybe a bit more direct, too – and really showing some of the stronger spiritual tones that would only blossom more strongly in later years! Reedman Plunky Nakabinde is firmly at the helm of the group – on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – but the set also features great work from Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Babatunde on congas and drums, Phil Branch on bass, and Al-Hammond Raul on piano and percussion. The sounds are a bit less Afro-styled than on the Oneness records, but still have all the great spiritual currents – and titles include an excellent version of Pharoah Sanders' "Black Unity", plus the original tunes "Contradiction","Nia", "Black Experience", and "The End Of The Butterfly King". On the next record, the group shifts into the new name Oneness Of Juju, and delivers African Rhythms – a landmark of 70s Afro-styled jazz – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde – a reedman whose work here alone is worth the price of admission – laid out nicely alongside some great percussion, Fender Rhodes, and wonderfully worm vocals on a few tracks. The album's one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic "African Rhythms" and "Liberation Dues" – plus "Kazi", "Funky Wood", "Don't Give Up", "Poo Too", and "Incognito". The group returns on Space Jungle Luv – a fantastic record from one of the greatest underground jazz groups of the 70s! Oneness of Juju are perhaps best known for the heavy funk of their first album, African Rhythms – but we're actually partial to this second album – a warmly spiritual batch of soul jazz tracks, and a set that's filled with life, emotion, and wonderful instrumentation throughout! The group are a bit more relaxed overall – easing into things, but in a way that really builds up as the album moves on – as they layer together heavy percussion, sweet keyboards, and lots of great sax solos from Plunky Nakabinde – plus wonderfully warm vocals that add a soulful edge the group never had before, but which still is very jazzy – and not like the funky club of later years. The whole thing's wonderfully cohesive, and a treasure throughout – and titles include the warm vocal number "River Luvrite", to the harder hitting "Space Jungle Funk", and other gems like "Soul Love Now", "Follow Me", "The Connection", and "Love's Messenger". Lastly, Experience Unlimited serve up a wonderfully spiritual album – and one that's maybe a bit of a surprise, given the later fame of the group! The group here is billed by their full name – Experience Unlimited – but where later known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". Yet as a classic album on the Black Fire label, this record is nothing like their 80s material at all – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju and the larger family of Black Fire artists! This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe – and a message to match the title and the cover. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of jazz funk classics from this group who got their start with reedman Tom Scott! First up is the self-titled LA Express – funky fusion with a bit of a studio feel – played by the LA Express, a combo best known for their work with Tom Scott – stepping out here strongly on their own! Even without Scott's sax in the lead, the sound here is still pretty darn sharp – and the lineup features Robben Ford on guitars, Victor Feldman on keyboards, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums and percussion – plus saxophones from David Luell, who kind of steps in where Scott left off! There's some nice jamming that's on the tighter side of the CTI sound – with lots of choppy sax lines from Luell over sweet electric rhythms – and titles include "The Shrug", "Stairs", "Cry Of The Jungle", "It's Happening Right Now", "Western Horizon", and "Down The Middle". Shadow Play is proof that the group could stand strongly on their own away from former leader Tom Scott! This time around, the sound is a bit more built-up than before – put together with a slight dose of soul in the mix, which really warms things up from the sharper sound of their debut! The album features vocals on 3 numbers – wonderful wordless scatting from Joni Mitchell on the track "Nordic Winds" – which almost comes across like a rare Euro fusion cut from the time – and straighter soulful singing from Paulette McWilliams on the tunes "Double Your Pleasure" and "Dance The Night Away". Players include Victor Feldman on keyboards and percussion, David Luell on saxes, Peter Maunu on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums – and other titles include "Shadow Play", "Chariot Race", "Velvet Lady", "Mad Drums & Englishman", and "Vortex". An amazing second full length set from Quasimode – easily one of the most soulful combos working in the current club jazz underground! Quasimode cover some of the same territory as their Japanese contemporaries Sleepwalker – an older style of soul jazz – played live, mostly with acoustic instrumentation – in ways the hearken back to the best older work on labels like Impulse, Strata East, and Black Jazz. They've got a great sense of focus and drive – really pushing their tunes with a sense of energy that most regular jazzmen these days can hardly touch – yet also doing so in a way that always swings strongly, with the kind of jazz dance rhythms that first sent international collectors digging for soul jazz sides a few decades back! This time around, they've got some wonderful help from Carmen Lundy on two tracks – bringing in vocals that recall the best work on her own albums from a decade or two ago – and other guests on the album include Mika Arisaka on vocals and Masato Nakamura from Sleepwalker on tenor sax. Juju only recorded two full albums in the early 70s, so this unissued live set is a key addition to their catalog – and the whole thing's got this bold quality that's much more jazz-based, and often more avant than the group's later work – more in line with work in the tradition of the AACM, or some of the earliest loft jazz talents. No surprise, the set was recorded at Ornette Coleman's space on the lower east side in the early 70s – with the mighty Plunky Nakbinde on saxes and flute, sounding a lot more searing than any of his records from the 80s onward – plus Babatunde on percussion, Lon Moshe on vibes and flute, and Al-Hammel Rasul on keyboards. There's a bit of vocalizations, and lots of percussion from group members too – and the sound is very spiritual, with touches of more percussive Afro-centric playing. A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Excellent! This record is one of the lost chapters in the career of the great British alto player Joe Harriott. The session was recorded before Joe's experimental "Abstract" release, and way before his "Indo Jazz Fusions" experiments – but it's still an excellent session of off-kilter bop that shows what a keen talent Joe was on the alto. He's playing here in the company of the great Shake Keane on trumpet – another fellow West Indian expatriate who was living in London – along with Coleridge Goode on bass, Harry South on piano, and Bobby Orr on drums – plus some bonus from Frank Holder on a few tracks, which sound mighty nice. The session was probably released in the UK, but this US issue is the only time we ever seem to see it – and it's not a record that shows up often. One of the sweetest electric records to come from 70s Brazil – the fabulous first effort from the Azymuth trio, and work that's hardly been matched again! Although the group here have plenty of the warm keyboard touches of their more famous later work, they're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well – using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years! ✨✧ Bande GamboaHorizonte – Revamping Rare Gems From Guinea Bissau & Cabo Verde ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. Titles include "Dunia Be Tene", "Riba Bass Di Mi", "Citi Ku Liti", "No Guinea", "Mulato Ferrera", "Segunda", and "Di Mas". CD

Celio BalonaBem Bolado (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Paladium/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... $16.99
A really unusual album from Brazilian organist Celio Balona – first, in that it's recorded in a small nightclub in Belo Horizonte, which gives the whole thing a different vibe than Celio's studio work – and second, in that it has singers on a number of tracks – which provides a very groovy accompaniment to Balona's work on organ! The crowd is nicely responsive – small, but enthusiastic – and the whole thing almost feels a lot more like some back room party from mid 60s Brazil, than it does the same style of instrumental records from the time! Titles include "The Boogaloo Dance", "Something's Gotta Give", "Marina", "Dio Come Ti Amo", "Quando M'Inamoro", and "Voltei". CD features bonus tracks – a cool take on "Batman", and "Tema De Onibus". Quin KirchnerShadows & The Light ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99
A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. Titles include "Ecliptics", "King Korn", "Jupiter Moon", "Horizons", "At This Point In Time", "Bata Chop", "Pathways", "Star Cluster", and "Moon Vision". CD

Laidback and charming modern bossa pop from Marcela Mangabeira – a set with warmth to spare, and very pretty vocals from Marcela! The backdrop is light and a little bit jazzy, with electronics giving it a modern feel without undercutting the bossa melodies. Marcela's does her lovely best on songs penned by the giants – Roberto Menescal, Ivan Lins, Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vinicius De Moraes, Caetano Veloso and others. Titles include "Rio", "Love Dance", "Para Ti", "Os Gritos", "Insensatez", "So Quis Voce", "Pro Tom", "A Ra" "Voo Sobre O Horizonte",. "So Danco Samba" and more. CD

QuanticAtlantic Oscillations ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $10.99 11.99
A masterpiece from Will "Quantic" Holland – an artist who always surprises us with new sounds, but really blows us away with the depth in this set! Quantic started out groovy, then got funky and soulful, then embraced a range of Latin cultures in later work – and throughout that long musical journey, he's never failed to keep on growing – always stepping forward towards new sonic horizons, rather than be content to serve up the same sounds that got him attention in the first place! Subtle strings are added to beats (both acoustic and electric), keyboards, and just the right use of vocals from Nidia Gongora, Alice Russell, Denita Odigie, and Holland himself – so that the album's got this balance between instrumental activity and lyrical passages – the shifting voices never taking the spotlight away from the larger musical vision that Quantic uses to guide the whole proceedings. Sly5thAve also adds in some great work – and titles include "Tierra Mama", "Incendium", "Divergence", "Is it Your Intention", "La Reflexion", "Orquidea", "September Blues", and "Now Or Never". CD

RovaSaxophone Diplomacy ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1983. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
An important early album from the Rova Quartet – one that earns the diplomacy in its title in two different ways – first because it features recordings from a tour that the group made to Soviet bloc nations during the cold war years – and second because it was one of their first records to get wide circulation, and helped act as a calling card for their unique sound around the globe! The group are at their early creative peak here – with John Raskin on baritone, alto, soprano, and clarinet; Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino; Andrew Vogt on alto, soprano, sopranino, and flutes; and Bruce Ackley on soprano and clarinet – all visionary players coming together with no other accompaniment at all – and really blowing us away especially on the longer tracks that sustain their ideas beautifully. Fantastic sounds and shapes throughout – and titles include "The Throes", "Flamingo Horizons", "Paint Another Take Of The Shootpop", and "Detente Or Detroit". CD

Okka Disk, 2003. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
One of the most striking albums we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – an album of solo tracks, recorded in the living room of his home, with a wonderfully introspective and exploratory quality! The album instantly achieves a place in a legacy of solo reed work that includes seminal albums by Evan Parker and Steve Lacy – and the set features Vandermark blowing on baritone, tenor, clarinet, and bass clarinet. The set features 13 titles recorded in the living room, plus 5 more recorded live in the studio (how's that for a switch?) – with titles that include "Panels", "So Is This", "Lines", "Resistance", "Horizontal Weight", "Beck & Fall", and "Leaves". Sonoton/P-Vine (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mid-80s set from the Sonoton sound library – served up in a mode that's heavy on keyboards and beats, and which definitely references some of the bigger action film scoring styles of the time! Geoff Bastow uses plenty of the best technology of the time to work as a one-man band – all with bright sonic elements that are brought to the forefront by the digital UHJ Ambisonic Surround Sound production of the set – which gives these grooves a very spacious feel, and offsets some of the possible coldness they would have had coming out of a TV speaker! Each track is served up in a few different variations – and titles include "Current Advances", "Positive Force", "Horizons", "The AV Conception", and "Expo". CD

✨✧ This HeatThis Heat ... LP
These/Modern Classics, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing record from This Heat – a group that were either years before or behind their times – given that they were essentially a prog combo working on the London scene during the big years of punk! Yet that temporal displacement hasn't stopped these guys from becoming legends – because like ESG, Liquid Liquid, and a few other groups of their nature – This Heat have a way of drawing on all the older elements from experimental rock of the decade before, and fusing it into a leaner, wittier, and more compelling post-punk blend! The music here is heavy on rhythms – with lots of drums and percussion from Charles Hayward – mixed with keyboards, guitar, and other instruments that are layered together with lots of studio elements and tape processes – in ways that are arguably even more complex than better-known 70s productions by guys like Conny Plank or Martin Hannett. The cuts on this debut album were recorded over a three year period that preceded the release of the set – but come together as one of the boldest musical statements of its time – a record that's continued to influence countless generations since the time it was released! Titles include "Testcard", "Horizontal Hold", "Not Waving", "Water", "Twilight Furniture", "24 Track Loop", and "Fall Of Saigon". LP, Vinyl record album
