Isaac HayesNew Horizon ... LP
Polydor, 1977. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Great later work by Isaac Hayes – working here in a post-Stax, post-ABC mode that has him forging a smooth soul sound that's really great! The album's not disco, but more of an extension of Ike's baroque approach to arranging – with subtle use of strings and keyboards, in a real Philly soul way. Not surprisingly, the album was recorded at Sigma Sound – which you can hear especially in the massive groover "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois)", a great long deep groove soul track that builds and builds over the course of 10 minutes. It's a great one, and worth the price of the album alone – but you also get the tracks "Out of The Ghetto", "It's Heaven To Me", and "Don't Take Your Love Away"! LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy TynerHorizon ... LP
Milestone, 1979. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A bit of a change for McCoy Tyner – but a set that's every bit as righteous as his other classics from the 70s! The lineup here is slightly different – with John Blake's violin playing a strong role in the sound, and lots of percussion from Guilherme Franco giving the set an almost Latin vibe at times – one that mixes in beautifully with Tyner's bold, modal lines on piano – and which are inflected with soulful reeds from Joe Ford and George Adams. The rest of the group features Charles Fambrough on bass and Al Foster on drums – both very hip cats – and Blake's instrument almost gives the album an early 70s Impulse Records sort of spirituality. Titles include "Horizon", "Motherland", "Woman Of Tomorrow", "One For Honor", and "Just Feelin". LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette ColemanDancing In Your Head ... LP
Horizon/A&M, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the few standout 70s sessions by Ornette Coleman – a wonderfully rhythmic record that shows Ornette's expanding musical vision at the time! Most of the record is dominated by the guitar-heavy "Theme From A Symphony" – a very harmelodic number that takes up all of side one and most of side two – and which features the twin guitars of Bern Nix and Charlie Ellerbee dancing alongside drums of Ronald Shannon Jackson while Ornette blows an elliptically grooving lead line on alto sax. Side two then closes with the far different "Midnight Sunrise" – an earthy improvisation that features Ornette's alto alongside the Master Musicians Of Joujouka, who use an array of percussion and reed instruments to create a dark tapestry of sound! ✨✧ Sonny FortuneWaves Of Dreams ... LP
A&M/Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
A really wonderful album by Sonny Fortune – recorded for a major label, sure, but with the soulful depth of some of his earlier work for the indies! Sonny's on alto, flute, and soprano sax – and also plays a bit of percussion and some slight mini moog – not too much, as the session only has slight electric touches, but mixed with additional Fender Rhodes from Michael Cochrane, which gives the record a shimmering finish that helps take Fortune's reed solos up to the heavens! Other players include Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Buster Williams on bass, and Chip Lyle on drums – and tracks include "In Waves Of Dreams", "A Space In Time", "Thoughts", "Revelation", and "Seeing Beyond The Obvious". Charlie HadenCloseness ... LP
Horizon/A&M, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
One of Charlie's best albums of the 70s – a beautifully stripped down set of duets with well-matched players that include Alice Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Paul Motian, and Keith Jarrett! The spare format is an extremely wonderful showcase for Haden's expressive bass work – and the intimacy of the tracks is different from some of the ECM recordings made during the same stretch – as the feel here is less a muted exploration of sound than it is a deeply personal interaction with some of the best talents of his generation. Tracks include "Ellen David", "For Turiya", "OC", and "For A Free Portugal". LP, Vinyl record album

Horizon/A&M, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
A spare set of duets that follows closely in spirit to Charlie Haden's Closeness album for A&M – and like that record, a set of well-chosen reunion duets with key figures from his past! The album features 4 long tracks – each based around a different performer set next to Haden's acoustic bass – recorded in a loose style that's almost a bit more spontaneous than the Closeness record. Don Cherry plays trumpet and flutes on "Out Of Focus", Archie Shepp plays tenor on "Shepp's Way", Hampton Hawes plays piano on "Turnaround", and Ornette Coleman plays trumpet on the beautiful title track "Golden Number". KarmaFor Everybody ... LP
A&M/Horizon, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
Karma was a group made up of some of the better west coast studio jazz players of the 70s – including Oscar Brashear, Ernie Watts, and George Bohanon – but despite the strength of their individual members, the group never really put things together all that strongly. They're not bad, but it's just that the soul jazz/spiritual promise of the group's name and cover art doesn't really seem to show in their slick music. Titles include "Difference Of Opinion", "Abundance", "Spotty Funk", and "Now That's Bionic". LP, Vinyl record album

Mel LewisMel Lewis & Friends ... LP
Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
An excellent solo set as a leader from drummer Mel Lewis – one that reminds us that he can still cook very strongly away from his big band with trumpeter Thad Jones! The set has Lewis in different groupings with an excellent set of the friends mentioned in the title – a top-shelf lineup that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Michael Brecker on tenor, Gregory Herbert on alto, Hank Jones on piano, and Ron Carter on bass – working their way through a mix of different material that really takes on some great new energy in Lewis' hands – that mix of swing and complexity he forged in the group with Jones, but maybe even more compelling here in a smaller combo format. Titles include "Windflower", "De Samba", "Ain't Nothin Nu", "A Child Is Born", and "Sho Nuff Did". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chet BakerYou Can't Go Home Again ... LP
Horizon, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great electric session by Chet Baker from the 70s – and a record that's got a bit more force and power than most of his other sets at the time! The format here is a bit tighter and more focused than Baker's recordings for CTI from the period – with electric piano from Kenny Barron or Richie Beirach on all tracks, plus guitar on 3 of the album's 4 tracks, and a fair bit of other horns to flesh out the overall sound. The approach isn't exactly funky, but it's quite driving at times – and Baker's work on trumpet is more sharply pronounced in the setting – a bit bolder and less sorry for itself, with a majesty that rises above the potentially-cluttered feel of the set to take its own at the top. Titles are all long – and include "Love For Sale", "Un Poco Loco", "You Can't Go Home Again", and "El Morro". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thad Jones & Mel LewisNew Life ... LP
Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful start to the second decade of this ultra-hip group – an ensemble who started to reinvent the sound of the big band in the late 60s, then only picked up more and more energy once time went on! Thad Jones and Mel Lewis are a hell of a pair – not only great leaders for a session like this, but such warmly collaborative players that they're able to bring together something of a supergroup for the record – with players like Jon Faddis and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets, Jerry Dodgion on flute and alto, Frank Foster and Greg Herbert on tenor saxes, David Spinozza on guitar, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Roland Hanna on both acoustic and electric piano – all key players in a much larger lineup that's almost too big to name! Tracks are long, and arranged with a great deal of depth – but never in a way that fails to swing – and titles include "Forever Lasting", "Little Rascal On A Rock", "Love & Harmony", "Greetings & Salutations", and "Love To One Is One To Love". ✨✧ Otis Spann with Fleetwood MacBiggest Thing Since Colossus ... LP
Blue Horizon, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great moment in the spotlight for the legendary Chicago bluesman Otis Spann – an artist who often appeared on records by bigger talents of his generation, but didn't always get to shine this brightly on his own! The album's a very reverent session that has Spann's piano and vocals in the lead, with spare backing from the first incarnation of Fleetwood Mac – a setting that really lets Peter Green show off the bluesiest side of his guitar work, and maybe in a different way than some of the group's albums. And despite any blues-rock fears you might have, the album's a definite blues outing all the way through – and maybe one of the most vibrant that Spann ever recorded. Titles include "My Love Depends On You", "Someday Baby", "I Need Some Air", "She Needs Some Loving", and "No More Dogging". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George BensonSpace ... LP
CTI, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $3.99
An unusual assortment of work from the great George Benson – pulled together from other sessions for CTI Records – featuring one studio track, and four more live numbers! The studio tune is George's take on the Stax Records classic "Hold On I'm Coming" – which Benson sings with almost as much vocal intensity on his own as Sam & Dave brought to the original – followed by a tight solo that really matches the funky 70s vibe of the arrangements. Next are four more tracks from the Carnegie Hall sessions – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! In a way, the record returns George to his early years at CTI – particularly the album Beyond The Blue Horizon – as the set's got a stripped down smaller group, working in a tight blend of electric jazzy bits that's very nice! Ronnie Foster lays down some great keyboards on the set, Hubert Laws is on flute, and George himself plays a hollow body with a nice soulful tone – stretching out on some straight jazz on most cuts, but also hitting a few of his smoother notes from the mid 70s. Titles include "Sky Dive", "Octane", "Summertime", and "Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

Dazz BandInvitation To Love ... LP
Motown, 1980. Very Good ... $2.99
A killer start to the 80s for the Dazz Band – with great tunes in a funky mode as well as more measured group soul numbers – and it all adds up one of their best albums ever! Tunes like the opener "Shake It", plus "Shake It Up" and "Magnetized" bring the funkier vibes – with a vamping guitar, thumping bass groove, punchy horns, and top notch vocals from the group – while tunes like the title track and "Beyond The Horizon" have a more soaring arrangement of horns and some strings, still with an impeccable core groove. It's not as smoothed out in the production booth as some of their later grooves of the 80s – a total gem! Wallentin's a singer with a very powerful presence – and a style that's more innately tuneful than usual for the Fire ensemble – which makes for a very unusual, very creative mix with instrumentation that includes Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax, Per Texas Johansson on bass clarinet and oboe, Isak Hedtjarn on b sharp clarinet and alto, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Johan Berthling on bass, and Andreas Werliin on drums. Great work from one of the most important saxophonists to emerge in recent years – the mighty Muriel Grossmann, a player who seems to be more and more on fire with each new record! Grossmann's a very strong-voiced talent – first on soprano sax, which was her initial calling card – and here both on alto and tenor, set up in a strongly modal group that has fantastic basslines throughout – really driving the music – while the drummer ranges more freely, and guitarist Radomir Milojkovic provides a really key part of the group's unique sound! Where some might have used a piano, Muriel's putting the guitar in just the right spot – able to handle rhythm and melody effortlessly, all with this wide palette of colors and tone that really illuminates the record. Yet Grossmann's sound is still key throughout – rich, spiritual, and incredibly soulful – on titles that include "Chant", "Sacred", "Horizon", "Momentum", "Elevation", and "Gratitude". CD

Epic/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A pair of jazz funk classics from this group who got their start with reedman Tom Scott! First up is the self-titled LA Express – funky fusion with a bit of a studio feel – played by the LA Express, a combo best known for their work with Tom Scott – stepping out here strongly on their own! Even without Scott's sax in the lead, the sound here is still pretty darn sharp – and the lineup features Robben Ford on guitars, Victor Feldman on keyboards, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums and percussion – plus saxophones from David Luell, who kind of steps in where Scott left off! There's some nice jamming that's on the tighter side of the CTI sound – with lots of choppy sax lines from Luell over sweet electric rhythms – and titles include "The Shrug", "Stairs", "Cry Of The Jungle", "It's Happening Right Now", "Western Horizon", and "Down The Middle". Shadow Play is proof that the group could stand strongly on their own away from former leader Tom Scott! This time around, the sound is a bit more built-up than before – put together with a slight dose of soul in the mix, which really warms things up from the sharper sound of their debut! The album features vocals on 3 numbers – wonderful wordless scatting from Joni Mitchell on the track "Nordic Winds" – which almost comes across like a rare Euro fusion cut from the time – and straighter soulful singing from Paulette McWilliams on the tunes "Double Your Pleasure" and "Dance The Night Away". Players include Victor Feldman on keyboards and percussion, David Luell on saxes, Peter Maunu on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums – and other titles include "Shadow Play", "Chariot Race", "Velvet Lady", "Mad Drums & Englishman", and "Vortex". A split CTI package – with a record apiece by Hubert Laws and George Benson! Hubert Laws is first with In The Beginning – moody work from one of the most groundbreaking flute players of the 70s – and a real standout in the legendary catalog of CTI Records! Hubert Laws was not only richly talented, but he was also capable of a large number of styles – and this double-length set for CTI has him moving past the electric funky jazz that was the usual manner of the label. The set features backing by a range of different keyboardists – from Bob James, to Clare Fisher, to Richard Tee – plus tenor by Ronnie Laws, percussion by Airto, drums by Steve Gadd, and guitar by Gene Bertonicini. All tracks are long, and the material spans funk, jazz, and even a bit of classically influenced playing. Titles include "Mean Lene", "Restoration", "Moment's Notice", and "Reconciliation", and "In The Beginning". We hadn't heard from Reggie B for a few years, before this solid set on the reliable Tokyo Dawn label – and it's as solid and timeless as anything we've heard from him to date! The songs are strong, it's well produced, and laid down with attention to detail. Good stuff! Guests include DJ Spinna, Onra, 00Genius, Kevin Pierce and others. Sweet natured, groovy sunshine rock from Emitt Rhodes – probably best known for his indispensable "Lullaby"! Cut from the same California cloth as Brian Wilson, the Association, and others, and nursing the same late Beatles jones as Harry Nilsson, but without the more sprawling characteristics of those artists and more of a devotion to a simpler, but hardly less pleasing melody. 23 tracks in all, including "With My Face On The Floor", "Somebody Made For Me", "Long Time No See", "Fresh As A Daisy", "You Should Be Ashamed", "Mirror", "Really Wanted You", "Warm Self Sacrifice", "Blue Horizon", "Only Lovers Decide", "Tame The Lion" and "Lullaby". Dogtown, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A true treasure from this righteous Philly collective – a group who only issued one album in the 70s, and who finally double their catalog with the release of this rare performance from 1973! Sounds Of Liberation have this all-star lineup of musicians who did great work in Philadelphia and elsewhere – with Khan Jamal on vibes, Monette Sudler on guitar, and Omar Hill and Rashid Salim on percussion – working alongside some great work on flute and alto from Byard Lancaster, heavy bass from Billy Mills, and just the right touch of drums from Dwight James! The style here is maybe tighter, and occasionally more funky than on their one self-titled album – but the group also stretch out strongly too – hitting all the right spots in this forward-thinking blend of spiritual jazz modes, of the sort that would have made them a huge 70s ensemble, had they held on and found the right venue. A cool collection of really oddball numbers – unusual country, offbeat pop numbers, and a fair bit of cuts that have a popcorn groove somewhere down there at the bottom! These aren't the usual sorts of cuts you might expect – and instead, the collection's definitely on the hipper side of the spectrum from the things we hear from the Stag O Lee label – almost like some of the great collections that the Trailer Park label's been putting out of late. Sweet CTI grooving from George Benson – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! Thrift Girl, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Chicago's Andy Pratt further disrupts any dismissive ideas we might've had in recent years about neo-classic singer-songwriters – he's got a raw, real sound, slightly raspy and charismatic voice, and unpretentiously poetic lyrical sensibility that's straight-up irresistible. This great little follow-up EP to his Horizon Disrupted album – again recorded by Steve Albini – has a rawer feel, played in a warm trio setting with a roots rock vibe that serves the lyricism well. Andy didn't reach out to analog devotee engineer Albini for his famous name. It's a studio recording, but has the vibe of a late night barroom live set that's so good you've tuned out the crowd chatter and clattering bottles. That's how perfectly Albini captures it. We really think Pratt would've sounded right at home on Asylum Records in its artist-friendly prime, and nowadays folks like him have to do it DIY, which makes it all the more endearing. Includes "Lincoln Avenue", "God Only Gives You So Many Drinks", "Thrift Store Girl", "Get Close To Me" and "Happiness Is Home". CD

Pure pop magic – and a set that's bound to turn you onto a few dozen tunes you've never heard before! The set's the grooviest the Teensville label has ever given us – a package that goes way way deep into the late 60s world of Sunshine Pop – much deeper than the hits, and even some of the lesser-knowns that have been championed in recent years – to uncover a treasure trove of rare sunny nuggets, including a few that have never been issued before! There's a whopping 31 tracks on the CD – and the vocals soar, the guitars get groovy, and the music sparkles with lots of production touches that follow the best Beach Boys or Brill Building modes of the time. ✨✧ New HorizonsSomething New/Gonna Have Big Fun ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1983/1984. Used ... $6.99
2 classics from New Horizons – back to back on a single CD! Something New is something great from New Horizons – the group's second album, and even tighter than the first! Roger Troutman had a very big hand in the record, lending the group some very Zapp-ish touches in their grooves – a great blend for the catchy vocals of the group, in ways that even have the mellow cuts bouncing along nicely! The basslines are tight, but never overdone – and the record's got a real sense of class and timing that takes it way past some of the overly-familiar sides of the Troutman universe. Titles include "Your Thing Is Your Thing", "Something New", "Reaching For New Horizons", "I Can't Tell You", "County Line", and "Your Thing (rap)". Gonna Have Big Fun is a bouncy bouncy gem from New Horizons – a set that's got help from Roger and all the Troutman crew, yet somehow manages to step forward strongly with its own voice as well! There's plenty of bass at the bottom of the grooves, but things are never too popping or too-tight – just relaxed, almost mellow at points, with this wonderful flow that works perfectly for the group's hip vocals. The group's got kind of a youthful approach – almost like a harmony group raised in the generation of P-Funk, with that sort of style as their main inspiration – quite different than the approach of the mellower groups of a decade before. Titles include "Big Fun", "Dance Frite", "U Can Do (Watcha Wanna)", "Love To Spend The Night", and "Get Ready Let's Party". CD

Dot/Lonehill (Spain), 1957/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 rare Dot albums by the team of Pete & Conte Candoli – both brothers, and both important trumpeters in the west coast scene of the 50s! The first 11 tracks on the set feature the pair working with rhythm from Jimmy Rowles on piano, Howard Roberts on guitar, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Alvin Stoller on drums – all playing short, but to-the-point tunes that showcase the twin-solo talents of the players nicely! The pair make for a small horn section of their own on the ensemble passages – then break out nicely into differently-flavored solos for each tune. Titles include "Exodus In Jazz", "Disc-Location", "Fascinatin Rhythm", "Rockin Boogie", and "Pe-Con". Next up are 10 more tunes from the album Bell Book & Candoli – released to coincide with the brothers' appearance in the film Bell, Book, & Candle, where they worked in a small jazz combo fronted by Jack Lemmon (as a warlock!) on bongos! The style of the tracks is similar to those in the film – two trumpets up front, with groovy beat-era style backing that has a guitar echoing out in cool ways that give the tracks more of an edge than some of the brothers' other work from the time. The group's virtually the same as on the first sessions on the CD – except that Barney Kessel replaces Howard Roberts on guitar. Tracks include "Bell Book & Candoli", "Hey Bellboy", "Pagoda", "Night Walk", "Spanish Carnival", and "I May Be Wrong". CD

A great little idea for a project – one that has groovy sounds from the Agogo label reinterpreted by jazz arranger Lutz Krajenski – but always in a way that hangs on to all the soul of the originals! Lutz plays some really wonderful keyboards – deeply soulful throughout, in a jazz combo that features trumpet, tenor, flute, and plenty of percussion – as well as the fantastic soul vocals of Alana Alexander, whose presence in the lead really helps give a new shape to these songs! The music here was originally conceived by artists who include Hi Fly Orchestra, Mop Mop, Da Lata, Juju Orchestra, Mo Horizons, and others – but honestly, these versions maybe have even more depth than the originals, and a fantastic blend of jazz and soul. Sun RaSun Song (aka Jazz By Sun Ra) ... LP
Transition/Delmark, 1956. Near Mint- ... $49.99
Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any similarities to work going on in New York or LA – a voice that was all his own, and already quite boldly stated, even in these early years! The format might be somewhat familiar – an ensemble with horns and rhythm – but the overall execution really starts to open up as the album moves on – with odd phrasings, timings, and unusual moments that live up to all the promise you might expect from Ra. Even Mingus and some of his better-known contemporaries weren't heading in these directions in the mid 50s – and the record is a proud showcase of the freedoms that players were often accorded in the less-trafficked Chicago scene of the time. Horns include Art Hoyle & Dave Young on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone, Julian Priester on trombone, and James Scales on alto sax – and rhythm includes Jim Herndon on tympani, Robert Barry on drums, Wilbur Green on electric bass, and a young Richard Evans on acoustic bass! The breakout album from Shirley Murdock – a singer who first rose to fame working with Roger Troutman and Zapp – and who gets plenty of help here from that side of the soul spectrum too! Roger produced and plays on the record, and also wrote most of the songs too – and Larry Troutman and others provide most of the instrumentation – all with a groove that's as funky and punchy as Zapp at their best – which means that Shirley's got to be one hell of a singer to rise above the basslines, beats, and keyboards! Fortunately, Murdock's got a hell of a lot of power in her voice – which really gets unleashed here in a wonderful way, then spins down for a few great ballads too – all to make a very fully-formed set that's gone onto be one of the mainstream soul classics of the time. Wickedly funky reworks of classics by Sly & The Family Stone – most of which are harder-hitting than the famous original versions! The package is a great assemblage of lesser-known cover versions – many of which are done in rough-edged, deep funk modes – not just by American groups, but from artists around the globe – showing the far far reach of Sly's music, even in the early days! The language is sometimes changed in the lyrics, but the grooves are totally universal – the chopped-up funk that Sly Stone and the Family cooked up in the SF scene of the late 60s – served up here in a wide variety of groovy new versions. Titles include "Sing A Simple Song" by Tomorrow's Children, "Thank You (extended album version)" by Kashmere Stage Band, "Stand" by He 6, "Thank You" by Blue Star Gang, "Everyday People" by Sacramento Senior High School 1970, "Family Affair" by Jimmy Stone, "Remember Who You Are" by Breakestra, "Are You Ready" by LA Carnival, "Loose Booty" by Horizons High School Band, "Sing A Simple Song' by Donald Seward, "Messin With Sly" by Hot Chocolate, and "I Want To Take You Higher" by Gougoush. Funky jazz, but with plenty of keyboards that really trip things out – lots of long moogy runs that really make things sound great – especially when they're balanced out by Fender Rhodes! These guys seem to start in the territory of 70s electric jazz – especially the funkier sort – but they're also open to some 80s modes too, and even seem to point at times towards the spacey instrumental keyboard club that would show up on the European scene at the end of the 70s! A beautiful picture book on the cinematic legacy of Frank Sinatra – one that's full of color images, movie stills, and lots lots more – with just a bit of supporting text from the author, as well as family members Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra Jr! We love Sinatra on film every bit as much as we love him on record – and the book is a great visual addition to any record collection of his music. 147 pages, softcover, full color. Book

✨✧ VariousPlastic Dance Vol 1 – Domestic Synth Pop & Plugged-In Punk – Compiled By Andy Votel & Doug Shipton ... LP
Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. ✨✧ Kendrick Scott OracleWall Becomes A Bridge ... CD
Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The most searching and expansive sounding Kendrick Scott Oracle set for Blue Note yet – working here with producer Derrick Hodge and a fantastic group that includes John Ellis on reeds, Taylor Eigsti on keys, Mike Moreno on guitar and Joe Sanders on bass, and DJ Jahi Sundance turntables on a few tracks, lending a more astral element than you might expect! There's such a collaborative spirit here, with Scott's drums a solid anchor, but he's a generous leader to say the least, each player bringing a lot to the table in a set that bridges 70s soul jazz to contemporary genre-defying experimentation. A soaring spirit and melodic depth carry the vibe. Includes "New Eyes", "Moccan", "Windows", "Voices", "BeLoved", "Don Blue". "Becoming", "Horizons", "The Catalyst", "Pleh", "Nemesis" & "Archangel". ✨✧ Willie WhopperGuia Da Musica Instrumental Brasileira (paperback) ... Book
Du Books (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool book on Brazilian music – one that serves up a well-chosen array of very hip records, all laid out in decade-by-decade chapters – along with color images of the album cover art, label, date, and style information in regular text – and a review of the record in Japanese! Even if you don't read Japanese, there's a huge amount hear to learn – especially as the book offers up a nicely different variety of selections from similar bossa or samba books – and also moves well into the 21st Century, with some especially illuminating chapters on the past decade or two! The book is over 200 pages, and very nicely done – and offers up hundreds of listings that will definitely expand your horizons when it comes to Brazilian music! Book

✨✧ JazzanovaPool ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It feels like quite some time since we've last heard from Jazzanova – a group who were continually exploding our musical horizons back at the end of the last century, and who really seem to have evolved their sound in more recent years! This double-length set has a tremendous sense of scope – as the group have long moved past the jazz rhythms of their name, into worlds that easily embrace hip hop, contemporary soul, and other current styles – served up here with help from a top-shelf lineup of guests, including Jamie Cullum, Oddisee, Paul Randolph, Olivier St Louis, Charlotte OC, David Lemaitre, Nah Slee, Pete Josef, and Rachel Sermanni – each of whom give their tracks a slightly different vibe than the others. Titles include "Summer Keeps On Passing Me By", "Now", "Rain Makes The River", "Follow Your Feet", "Heat Wave", "It's Beautiful", "Everything I Wanted", "Let's Live Well", "I'm Still Here", and "No 9". ✨✧ MildlifePhase (with bonus track) ... CD
Research/P-Vine (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
About half the record has vocals, but the keyboards seem to be the main attraction – lined up nicely alongside guitar, bass, drums, and congas. Titles include "The Magnificent Moon", "Im Blau", "Zwango Zop", "Phase", "Two Horizons", and "The Gloves Don't Bite". The Japanese CD pressing also includes the non-album track "Phase II" clocking in over 11 minutes! CD

✨✧ Sun RaSun Song (aka Jazz By Sun Ra) ... LP
Transition/Delmark, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Brainville", "Call For All Demons", "Transition", "Lullaby For Realville", "Street Named Hell", "New Horizons", "Fall Off The Long", "Possession", and "Future". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousGhana Soundz 2 – Afro-beat, Funk & Fusion In 70's Ghana ... CD
Soundway (UK), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing funk from 70s Africa – a collection that's overflowing with great rare bits! If you ever thought that the sound of Afro Funk was just Fela, Tony Allen, and Manu Dibango – think again, because this set will really expand your horizons! The package was expertly selected, compiled, and annotated by Afro Funk DJ Miles Cleret – a man who really knows his stuff, and who's spent most of his adult life tracking down obscure bits from all corners of the dark continent. This set focuses on funk grooves from the vastly-undocumented Ghana scene – and it's honestly one of the best collections of Afro Funk we've ever heard – smoking and heavy from bottom to top, and filled with great music that we never would have caught otherwise! An instant treasure – and with tracks that include "Africa Is Home" by Joe Mensah, "Atwer Abroba" by Ebo Taylor, "Disco Africa" by Ogyatanaa Show Band, "Tamfo Nyi Ekyir" by Apagaya Show Band, "Kye Kye Pe Aware" by The Sweet Talks, "Mondo Soul Funky" by Ebo Taylor & Wuta Wazuri, "Samarin Bolga" by Uppers Chapter 2, "No Condition Is Permanent" by Marijata, and "Agbadza" by Uhuru Dance Band.
