Booker T & The MGsHip Hug-Her (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Stax, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
Booker T's definitely getting a bit funky with this one – stepping off with the incredible title cut, a tune which really complicates the groove from the earlier years! The sound is still solid Memphis soul, with a raw instrumental vibe – but the grooves are even better than before, and the set includes loads of great original number written by the group – the kind of cool tunes they most likely cooked up while jamming live in the studio! These gems include the seminal "Hip Hug Her" – plus "Carnaby Street", "Booker's Notion", "Soul Sanction", "Double Or Nothing", and "Slim Jenkins' Place". But the covers are groovy too – and include a version of "Pigmy", plus "Groovin" and "Sunny". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury/Get On Down, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $23.99 27.98
A 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D – and like some of the rest of the best of the decade, a set that was slightly slept-on at the time, but which has gone to have massive impact over the decades – still sounding completely fresh in comparison to bigger hits of the time! Diamond D comes from the same DITC underground as Showbiz & AG, Big L, and Lord Finesse – and like those others, when he got his time in the spotlight, he really took off – with beats that had an influence on so much more to come – and a very collaborative spirit that opens the door for contributions from Fat Joe, Mark The 45 King, Brand Nubian, Lakim Shabazz, and some of his old partners in DITC. Titles include the classic "Best Kept Secret" – with its fantastic Kool & The Gang sample – plus "Sally Got A One Track Mind", "I'm Outta Here," "Check One Two", "Freestyle", "Stunts Blunts & Hip Hop", "Pass Dat S**t", "What You Seek", "Confused", "A Day In The Life", "Step To Me", and "Shut The *!*! Laurent FintoniBedroom Beats & B-Sides – Instrumental Hip-Hop & Electronic Music At The Turn Of The Century ... Book
Velocity, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Hip hop was born on the streets of the South Bronx – but as the years went on, budgets changed, equipment evolved, and the music moved into some much more private spaces of creation – a rich legacy of homegrown production that's very well-documented in this book! The shift was key – as labels weren't always willing to spend the right sort of money for studio time for groundbreaking artists – and others weren't willing to play the games of the music industry, and were much more content to create on their own – a shift that's a bit like that of the rise of the singer/songwriter in rock at the end of the 60s – but with implications here that also touched many other styles of music as well. The book is an unusual presentation of the history – which is mostly told on an artist-by-artist basis, but to show an evolution in styles and sound – brought together with over 100 interviews and deep research that takes things far from the limelight of hip hop and dance music of the 90s and 00s. Softcover, 388 pages. Book

Lord BuckleyMost Immaculately Hip Aristocrat ... LP
Straight, 1956. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the strongest recordings ever made of the mad mad Lord Buckley! The album was issued in the late 60s for Frank Zappa's Straight label – but it features material recorded more than a decade before – at a time when Buckley was still alive, and one of the most bad-rapping comedian's to ever hit a stage. The approach is somewhat freer than some of Buckley's earlier sides – allowing the ersatz comedian a chance to really riff on a variety of subjects – talking with almost a jazz improvisational energy, in the way that made him a big favorite for the beat generation. The overall nature of the record is kind of hard to pin down – as it's not really comedy, just more of a freewheeling spoken session that's a bit jive, a bit beatnik, and plenty darn crazy! Titles include "The Raven", "The King Of Bad Cats", "Governor Slugwell", and "The Hip Einie". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great setting for the talents of French funky sound library genius Janko Nilovic – a set of new recordings that feature Janko on keyboards, alongside some very stripped-down beats and rhythms! Given that Nilovic's music has been sampled often over the years, the approach is no surprise – and it's almost as if Janko has decided to give back to the hip hop community by making a more contemporary set of instrumentals, but with that trademark sense of funk and space that always made his classic records so great! There's a bit of flute and tenor on the record too – and titles include "This Is How We Do", "Sunny Piece", "A Walk On The Bright Side", "No More Sorrow", "My Latin Thing", "A Spy Always Lie", and "Vox Of My Soul". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $34.99 39.99
Great cuts from the old school – pulled together from the earliest days of hip hop – at a time when the boundary lines in the music weren't so fully formed! These days, the difference between hip hop and club cuts is huge – but back in the South Bronx scene at the start, there was a lot more interplay between styles – as 70s funk served as the blueprint, disco singles expanded the format, soul vocals gave some structure, and live rhymes and DJ work provided all of the spontaneous elements that made the music so unique – coming together with amazing energy that really reflected the street-level sounds of the New York scene! This ultra-hip collection brings together all those amazing strands from the early years – in a set that's one of the best historically important Soul Jazz titles we've seen in years – from the excellent track selection right down to the very detailed notes. There's plenty of rare cuts here you're not likely to have in your collection – and titles include "Body Rock" by Neil B, "Positive Life" by Love Bug Starski & The Harlem World Crew, "At The Place To Be" by Mr Sweety G, "New Rap Language" by Spoonie G & The Treacherous Three, "We Are People Too" by Master Jay, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "And You Know That" by TJ Swan, "Searching Rap" by Bon Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, "Willie Rap" by Willie Wood & The Willie Wood Crew, "Rhythm Rap Rock" by Count Coolout, "On The Go" by Black Bird & Kevski, "Philosophy Rappin Spree" by Super 3, "Move Your Body" by Bramsam, and "One More Time" by Sugar Daddy. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $39.99 44.99
The real sound of the old school, and the best beats from the streets – the kind of early underground hip hop tracks that still sound wonderful after all these years! These are tracks from the earliest years of the style – when funk was as much a part of the music as lyrics – and tracks were often surprisingly long, and spun out in the best sort of party mode – with an excellent focus on funky drum breaks and basslines, matched by lyrics from youthful crews and MCs that set the standard for countless artists to come! As with the first volume, the track selection here is wonderful – a mix of key classics from the Harlem and South Bronx scenes, plus some overlooked gems that are well-worth discovering – all wrapped up with the usual top-shelf attention to detail we've come to expect from Soul Jazz Records! The package features loads of great notes and photos – and titles include "Maximus Party" by TJ Swann & Pee Wee Mel, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Lookin Good" by Eddie Cheba, "One Time Two Time Blow Your Mind" by MC Rock Lovely, "Let's Rock" by Harlem World Crew, "School Days" by Busy Bee, "Ah That's The Joint" by Kool DJ AJ, "Dancin Party People" by Little Skarsky, "Young Ladies" by Lonnie Love, "Rappin Partee Groove" by Rappers Rapp Group, "The People's Message Take Two" by Terry Lewis & Wild Flower, "Shake Your Body" by Manujothi, "Dr Ice Rap" by Zoot II, and "Rock The Message Rap" by Grand Master Chilly T & Stevie G. ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyIn A Minor Groove/Hip Harp ... CD
Prestige, 1958. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 of Dorothy Ashby's classic Prestige sessions – back to back on one CD! First up is material from Hip Harp – great stuff by the grooviest artist ever to play a harp! Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound. This set's got harp and flute in the lead, and features the tracks "Pawky", "Charmaine", "Jollity", and "Back Talk". On In A Minor Groove, Ashby swings with an other-wordly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Titles include "Rascallity", "Bohemia After Dark", "Taboo", "Autumn In Rome", and "It's A Minor Thing". CD

A huge dip into the history of hip hop – in a set that's something of a groundbreaking effort from the folks at the Smithsonian! If we're honest, we'll tell you that we're old enough to remember a time when folks thought that hip hop was just a fad – when it was a musical style that would disappear in just a few short years. But now, all these many decades later, the form has had such an impact on American culture that the Smithsonian Institute is giving it some official sort of due – something we never would have believed back in the 80s! The package is huge – 9CDs with a whopping 129 tracks in all, and a 300 page book that supports the recordings with an insane amount of notes, photos, and all sorts of other information – alongside a track list that was put together by folks who include Questlove, 9th Wonder, Chuck D, Jeff Chang, and MC Lyte! The set is especially great on old school tracks up through the golden era hip hop years – but also moves into the 21st century too – and artists include Treacherous Three, Afrika Bambaataa, Fearless Four, Cold Crush Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Run DMC, Fatback, Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Funky Four +1, T La Rock, Schoolly D, Beastie Boys, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim, Mantronix, Stetsasonic, Audio Two, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Marley Marl, Tone Loc, Jungle Brothers, NWA, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, 3rd Bass, De La Soul, Queen Latifa, DOC, 2 Live Crew, Dr Dre, Sir Mix A Lot, Digable Planets, Positive K, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Naughty By Nature, Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Geto Boys, Pharcyde, 2Pac, Warren G, Gang Starr, Notorious BIG, and many many more! Leave it to career iconoclast Nas to declare Hip Hop Is Dead on his Def Jam debut – a defiantly straight up hip hop record that's one of the leanest full lengths he's delivered since his abbreviated debut masterpiece! Hip Hop Is Dead, not surprisingly, is actually a very lively LP – and it's tried-and-true hip hop – another in Nas's strong series of subsequent LPs of the 00s. Nas once released a perfect piece of work – something very few artists in any idiom ever do – setting up a nearly impossible standard to live up to, but, Hip Hop Is Dead is well worth your time. Production by Salaam Remi (natch), LES, Kanye West, Scott Storch (who delivers a Kanye-like sound on one cut) and others. ✨✧ Shirley ScottLegends Of Acid Jazz (Hip Soul/Hip Twist) ... CD
Prestige, 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two hip recvords from organist Shirley Scott – back to back on a single CD! First up is Hip Soul – early Shirley Scott at her best – working with husband Stanley Turrentine to craft a great set of soul jazz tracks! The mood is laidback and easygoing, and honestly, it's Turrentine's deeply soulful solos that really make the set crackle – bringing an edge to the record that Shirley didn't always have, even on her earlier recordings with Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Stan's tone is superb – with a subtle rasp that really breaks open the sound – and his playing is extremely well-handled – always keeping us on the edge of our seat, blowing as he goes with incredible confidence and creativity! The rest of the group features Herb Lewis on bass and Roy Brooks on drums – and titles include "Trane's Blues", "Hip Soul", "411 West", "By Myself", and "Stanley's Time". On Hip Twist, Shirley's joined by husband Stanley Turrentine, whose tenor work on any Scott album always takes it to the next level! Stan's tone is still nice and raw here – blowing out some hard and soulful lines that are the perfect complement to Shirley's more composed work on the Hammond. The rest of the group includes George Tucker on bass and Otis Finch on drums – and tracks include "Hip Twist", "Violent Blues", "That's All", "All Tore Down", and "Rippin & Runnin". CD

✨✧ VariousIn-Kraut – Hip Shaking Grooves Made In Germany 1966 to 1974 ... LP
Marina (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest compilations we've heard in a long long time – filled with fresh and unusual tunes from the 60s and 70s, all pulled from a range of rare German recordings! The vibe here is playful and groovy – part mod 60s, part American-inspired funk – and all sparkling with very cool instrumental, vocal, and production touches that make most of these tunes stand out from anything else we've heard before. There's a slight similarity to some of the Peter Thomas soundtrack sides from the time, or some of the MPS non-jazz material from these years – but the overall approach is quite different, and often runs into psychedelic or soul-based territory we weren't expecting. The set was put together by the folks at Marina Records, who also had a hand in some of the Get Easy collections – and our hats are off to them for their discerning ear and love of a left-of-center tune! Each new track is a real delight to our ears – and the set's the kind that re-inspires us to go looking for old records with the knowledge that there's still a heck of a lot of great grooves out there that we know nothing about! Each track is annotated nicely – further unlocking the mystery of the music – and titles include "Gemini" by Gunter Noris, "Beat It" by Fredy Brock, "Berlin" by Heidi Bruhl, "Das Stundenhotel Von St Pauli"by Erwin Halletz, "Pussy Baby" by Bill Lawrence, "Moving Out" by Orchester Helmuth Brandenburg, "Wie A Glockn" by Marianne Mendt, "Sundy Love Affair" by Orchester Frank Pleyer, "An Unknown Quantity" by Bill Ramsey & the Jay Five, "From Here On It Got Rough" by Hildegard Knef, "Marihuana Mantra" by Kuno & The Marihuana Brass, and "Naturally Stoned" by Helmut Zacharias. Ken NordineYou're Getting Better – The Complete Word Jazz Dot Masters 1957 to 1960 (limited edition 2CD set) ... CD
Dot/Hip-O Select, Late 50s. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
The complete 50s Word Jazz efforts from the incomparable Ken Nordine – an incredible assemblage of his spoken word/poetry and charismatic surrealist irony backed by first rate jazz session players – the whole of his early work for Dot Records! This is Ken's best and earliest Word Jazz – the beats-inspired stream of consciousness genius that's a genre all his own. He's best known for his radio work, and has been hailed more recently for Asphodel's reissue of his later, equally great lounge psychedelia concept album Colors – but this stuff is more impressive for its being so ahead of the curve. The after hours jazzy backing on the first couple of Word Jazz albums, which is up earliest in this set, is fairly stripped down and spare, and gets more extroverted and groovy as the set progresses – with more experimental touches along the way. You can really sense the musicians getting more comfortable and playful as they learn how to groove to the oddball vocals. Players include Dick Marx and Dick Campbell on piano, Johnny Frigo on guitar, Ken Soderbloom on woodwinds, Emmet Frazier on bass, Bob Frazier on drums and others. The tracks are from the Dot LPs Word Jazz, Son Of Word Jazz, Next! and Word Jazz Vol II, with some previously unreleased bits, plus odds & ends from later releases that were recorded during the sessions. This is the definitive CD compilation of early Nordine – an incredible set for fans of leftfield vocals, oddball jazz, or anyone open to a mystifying and hypnotic aural experience like no other! 45 tracks on 2CDs: "The Wet Stranger", "What Time Is It", "My Baby", "The Vidiot", "Miss Cone", "Secretary", "I Used To Think My Right Hand Was Uglier Than My Right Hand", "Charlie Zen", "Mr Big", "Smerd", "Hafta Have You", "There's A She And A He", "So And So", "Involutional Intellection", "Silly Ideas I Used To Have" and many more! ✨✧ James BrownComplete James Brown Christmas (Christmas Songs/A Soulful Christmas/Hey America) ... CD
King/Hip-O Select, 1966/1968/1970. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Brown and Christmas – an amazing combination that yielded some incredible music in the late 60s! This set's the first to ever bring together all the Christmas music that James Brown recorded for King Records at the time – a massive set that features the complete tracks from three different albums – Christmas Songs, A Soulful Christmas, and Hey America – plus some rare bonus tracks too! You probably know that James Brown cut the odd Holiday tune – and have likely heard the classic "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" on the airwaves in December – but you'll likely be stunned to see the full range of seasonal cuts that Brown recorded for King – all in a wonderful range of styles that moves from deep soul to jazz vocals to funky instrumentals, and back again! The package is all we might ever want for Christmas ourselves – as we've treasured our scratched-up copies of the records for years, but really appreciate them even more in this setting – along with the booklet's well-done notes on the music, and the direction that James was going for. The set features a massive 37 tracks in all – including "This Is My Lonely Christmas (parts 1 & 2)", "Let's Make Christmas Mean Something This Year", "Signs Of Christmas", "Santa Claus Santa Claus", "You Know It", "In The Middle", "Tit For Tat", "Christmas Is Coming", "Believers Shall Enjoy", "Hey America", "Go Power At Christmas Time", "My Rapp", "I'm Your Christmas Friend Don't Be Hungry", "Merry Christmas My Baby & A Verry Very Happy New Year", "Christmas Is Love", and "A Lonely Little Boy Around One Little Christmas Toy". Bonus cuts include "It's Christmas Time (parts 1 & 2)", "Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay (single)", "You Know It (single)", and sing-along versions of a few tracks too! CD

Hip-O, Mid 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A whopping collection of the Dells' classic work – featuring tunes pulled from their years at Vee Jay, Chess, Chi-Sound, and Mercury! The package starts way back in the 50s, and traces the group through their groundbreaking 60s soul sides, their sublime baroque 70s numbers, and their later smooth modern tracks – and as you listen to this stuff, you'll be stunned to hear how great the group remained through all of that time! The early tracks are straight doo wop, with simple production; later work has the great Charles Stepney crafting some majestic Cadet/Concept arrangements; and even the modern stuff has a well-constructed smooth groove. Through it all, though, the real strength is the group's vocals – still wonderful even in the album's one more recent number, "A Heart Is A House For Love". Titles include "I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue", "Always Together", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "I Miss You", "Slow Motion", "We Got To Get Our Thing Together", "The Glory Ove Love", "Long Lonely Nights", "Dreams Of Contentment", "The Bossa Nova Bird", "Oh What A Night" (in 2 versions), "Stay In My Corner (in 3 versions)", and "Does Anybody Know I'm Here". ✨✧ Marvin GayeHere, My Dear (expanded 2CD edition) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together". Expanded CD features the famous 12" instrumental version of "A Funky Space Reincarnation" – plus a full set of 12 bonus alternate mixes produced by the likes of Mocean Worker, Easy Mo Bee, Leon Ware, Marcus Miller, Prince Paul, Bootsy Collins, Slaam Remi, and The Randy Watson Experience – including "Anger (alt extended)", "Here My Dear (alt mix)", "Time To Get It Together (alt extended mix)", "Falling In Love Again (alt version)", "I Met A Little Girl (alt version)", "Sparrow (alt version)", and "Anna's Song (inst – alt version)". ✨✧ Jimmy SmithRespect/Livin' It Up! (with bonus track) ... CD
Verve/Hip-O Select, 1967/1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of near perfect soulful jazz organ sets from Jimmy Smith – 1967's Respect and 1968's Livin' It Up – plus the rare non album single "Mickey Mouse" as bonus track for the first time on CD! Respect is really nice jazz album from Jimmy, although one that got hidden in the years of Jimmy's more "concept" oriented sessions for Verve. Most of the material is quartet stuff, with players like Bernard Purdie, Eric Gale, and Ron Carter backing up Jimmy's soulful organ. The tracks are longer than usual too, with lots of nice soloing going on, and a stone easy soul groove. Includes a tasty loping version of "Get Out Of My Life", with a very different drum groove than usual, plus "Funky Broadway", "T Bone Steak", and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". Livin' It Up is a straight up stunner – and quite possibly one of his greatest records for Verve! The set has Jimmy working with arranger Oliver Nelson – in a setting that's got big band backings, but done in a style that's cool enough to cut through all the BS of similar sessions. There's no hoke at all – just a lean and soulful approach that has Nelson serving up a powerhouse jazzy groove underneath – and Jimmy soloing madly over the top! The album's filled with great tunes too – including a fab cover of "Mission Impossible", the original "Big Boss Man", a version of Richard Evans' "Burning Spear", a great takes on "Valley Of The Dolls" and "The Gentle Rain". Great stuff throughout! CD

Cadet/Dusty Groove, 1970. Used ... $7.99
Amazing soul from Chess Records – and an album that almost feels like some lost small-label soul set, or a batch of rare funky 45s! Shades Of Brown are an ultra-hip male group from Chicago – a quartet of singers with the range and depth of The Temptations or Dells at their best, supported by a small combo of very lively instrumentalists who bring a really funky edge to their music – that sort of self-contained sound than you might find more in the hinterlands of the 60s soul scene than at Chess. But there's also plenty of key Chess touches too – including production by Dells maestro Bobby Miller, who also penned all the tunes for the record, giving the group some wonderful material to work with. Richard Evans handled most of the arrangements, but Charles Stepney also did a few too – and titles include "Man's Worst Enemy", "Girl I'm Coming Home", "Falling In Love Too Hard", "Lite Y'All Up", "Lie #2", "Little Girl", "Ho-Hum World", "He Didn't Leave Me A Name", "Garbage Man", and "The Soil I Tilled For You" – which has an amazing break! Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $13.99
A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Titles include the 2 title hits – "Walk Tall" and "74 Miles Away" – plus "I Remember Bird", "Oh Babe", and "Do Do Do". CD

Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. And oh yeah, David Axelrod produced the whole thing too! Titles include "Gumba Gumba", "Up & At It", "Hamba Nami", "Ndolima", and "Lehadima". CD

The title track is a beautiful reading of Galt MacDermott's "African Waltz" – and other tracks include "Blue Brass Groove", "Something Different", "The Uptown", and "Letter From Home". Wilkins outdoes himself on this one, really providing some strong swinging arrangements that work well with the complicated groove of the project – and in a way, the record feels more like Randy Weston or Melba Liston's at the helm. Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. Paramount/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... $36.99 51.99
A massive set of work from Affinity – a group who only gave the world one classic album, but have a heck of a lot more to offer too! The set begins with the self-titled album from Affinity – a British rock combo, but one with a distinctly jazzy feel – one that's often quite funky at times too! The core instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and guitar, set over some tightly rhythm bass and drums – often moving with some hip jazzy changes in the mix, and a nice sense of space between the notes that really helps things groove. Vocals are by Linda Hoyle, who again has a bit of a jazz-based approach – almost like Norma Winstone or Julie Driscoll at times in the way she soars out majestically over the rhythms, but somewhat more lyrically oriented overall. Titles include "I Am & So Are You", "Night Flight", "Three Sisters", "Mr Joy", and "I Wonder If I Care As Much". CD2 continues the jazzy spirit, with a whole host of instrumentals showing some soul jazz roots of the group – as they take on "Jive Samba", "All Blues", "Fever", "Out Of The Storm", "Comin Home Baby", and "Mercy Mercy Mercy". CD3 features origins of the group, with 17 more tracks from 1965 to 1967 – including more jazz work too – and CD4 features 9 more tracks recorded after the classic album – including "Rio", "Sunshower", "Grey Skies", "Mora's Hand", "Sarah's Wardrobe", and "Highgate". Argo/Dusty Groove, 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskridge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road". A sweet little album from Laurindo Almeida and his "Bossa Nova All Stars" – not a group of Brazilian musicians, and instead a hip set of LA players who really help make the set sparkle! There's a bit more jazz here than on some of Laurindo's other Capitol records of the time – a great 60s update to the groove he first forged in the 50s with Bud Shank – featuring even more swinging rhythms, inventive instrumentation, and a slightly larger group with players who include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Cooper on tenor, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Justin Gordon on flute, and Shelly Manne, Chico Guerrero, and Milt Holland on percussion! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba". AlzoAlzo (aka Looking For You) ... LP
Bell, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A really unique little record – soulful, folksy, and with a slight jazzy tinge at times – and the first solo album cut by one half of the Alzo & Udine Latin soul duet who recorded for Mercury in the late 60s! This solo album has a bit of a different flavor than Alzo's work with Udine, but the singing and instrumentation have a lot of nice jazzy changes – and the whole thing skips along with the same earthy, personal feel that made the earlier album so great. The whole thing's sort of in between Colin Blunstone and Nick Drake, but with a bit more of a soulful vibe – and an ultra-hip mix of styles that makes us wonder why Alzo wasn't hailed as the hippest thing going at the time. Bob (Multiplication Rock) Dorough arranged and produced, with a very groovy style – and tracks include "Country", "That's Alright", "Without You Girl", "Some People", "Lookin' For You", and "You Know Me, I Know You". Warner, 1976. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A well-titled album, given that the overall feel here is maybe a bit more stripped-down and almost rootsy at times – even though the trio's still working with producer George Martin! The set was recorded in just a week at Caribou Ranch – and it's almost a return to the core harmonies and acoustic elements of the group's roots – cast out here with perfect compressed sound, yet also hitting harder with a few more punched-up moments at times too. There's a nice "past the hits" quality to the set – and titles include "She's A Liar", "Letter", "Watership Down", "Amber Cascades", "Lovely Night", and "Who Loves You" – plus "Hideaway (parts 1 & 2)", which has this great mellow groove and piano from Martin that could easily be a hip hop sample! AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. Used ... $5.99
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". Ernestine Anderson at the height of her powers – caught during a very successful run at Concord Records, where she was easily one of the hippest things going down at the time! The group here is a trio, and very tight – Hank Jones on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums – all shifting easily to fit the mood and personal demeanor of Anderson's performance, which is a fair bit more dynamic than other jazz singers of the period. In a way, the record's got a similar feel to Lorez Alexandria's albums from the time – hip soul jazz vocals at its best, with just the right twists, turns, and rhythmic impulses to keep things interesting – but not enough to goof things up too much! A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". CD

Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Maybe part of the strength of their fame was that over here, the group were never pictured on the cover – so they fit right in the record racks with other funk records of the time – as they serve up a wild safari of grooves that's almost in a sort of party mode, with the band jamming on congas, organ, and guitars! The vocals trade back nicely between the lead singer and the ensemble in a soulful mode that shows that everyone was paying attention – and the best tracks have a tight groove with choppy guitar and driving conga, almost in an LA Chicano funk mode. Gary BartzLibra/Another Earth ... CD
Milestone, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Early soul jazz brilliance from a young Gary Bartz – music that pre-dates his Ntu Troup, and his work with Larry Mizell! Libra is fantastic early work from Gary – and probably his rarest record ever! The album was cut at a time when the young Bartz was first coming to prominence in the hip late 60s soul jazz group of Max Roach – and Bartz's playing at the time is a perfect model of mid-Coltrane searching with some of the tighter sides of soul jazz that were being forged at labels like Blue Note by players like Hank Mobley or Lee Morgan. The record's a masterpiece of youthful soulful energy – and the group includes Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Richard Davis on bass, Albert Dailey on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums, all players who are perfectly matched to fit Bartz's stridently creative vision. His solos on alto are impeccable – some of the most meaningful we've ever heard on the instrument from the time – and the album's a great one all the way through! Titles include "Air & Fire", "Eastern Blues", "Libra", "Freedom Of The Day", and "Cabin In The Sky". Another Earth is amazing too – one of the first that Gary Bartz ever cut – done during a time when he'd been working with Max Roach and a super-hip group of younger soul jazz players who would go onto shape the sound of the 70s. Bartz leads a group that includes Stanley Cowell, Freddy Waits, Charles Tolliver, Pharoah Sanders, and Reggie Workman – and the music sounds like it was lifted from one of the best albums on Strata East from the 70s. There's no funk, no vocals, no weird rhythms – just pure spiritual jazz, played to perfection, and filled with a creative vitality that most of the players had lost a few years later. Tracks include the album-side "Another Earth", plus "Dark Nebula", "UFO", and "Perihelion & Aphelion". Note: CD omits the track "Disjunction" from Libra – due to space restrictions. CD

Count Basie & His OrchestraBasie's Beatle Bag ... LP
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- ... $24.99
An amazing little record – with results that are even greater than the sum of its parts! As you'd guess from the title, Count Basie takes on the 60s sounds of The Beatles – but he's doing so with arrangements from the great Chico O'Farrill – who really keeps things interesting throughout – throwing in those hip rhythms and odd twists and turns he first forged with his Latin recordings – in ways that definitely live up to the groovy pedigree of the tunes. And the Basie group's got a groovier sound than usual – probably due to the arrangements – and Basie plays some nice organ riffs on a number of the album's tracks – one of the Count's rare outings on the instrument, always a treat. Titles include "Help!", "Can't Buy Me Love", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "All My Loving", and "And I Love Her". Proof that The Beatles' influence was way farther reaching than you'd ever expect! LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo MGM pressing with deep groove, in fantastic shape!)

Batti MamzelleI See The Light (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Cube/Big Pink (Korea), 1974. Used ... $14.99
The only album ever recorded by Batti Mamzelle – an unusual group from Trinidad, and one who bring in a fair bit of steel drums to their music, alongside some heavier funk and rock modes! The blend is pretty darn unique – different than some of the straighter steel bands who were dabbling in funk – as these guys work out the electric elements first, then color things in with the steel – and top things off with some nicely soulful vocals as well! The whole thing is ultra-hip, and every bit as appealing to fans of offbeat funk as to folks who dig unusual steel drum records too – with titles that include "Love Is Blind", "Get Out Of My way", "Lament", "Caroni", "Seasoning", "Voodoo Man", "I See The Light", and "Streaking". Beastie BoysAglio E Olio (with bonus tracks) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Grand Royal, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Be warned – this might not be the Beastie Boys you know and love, because this special set has the trio returning to their punk rock roots – getting some help from Awol, and blasting through tracks that are as loud and fast as the work on their early Polly Wog Stew EP! In fact, the group are so fast here that they blast through the songs very quickly – the record is just a quarter of an hour in length – yet given that they could just have kept doing their same hitmaking thing at the time, it's great to hear them still be able to operate in a hardcore mode! Titles include "Square Wave In Unison", "Brand New", "Deal With It", "Believe Me", and "Nervous Assistant". Again, this is not hip hop – it's punk rock! Includes bonus tracks – "Light My Fire" and "Soba Violence". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beastie BoysTo The 5 Boroughs ... CD
Capitol, 2004. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A masterful later album by the Beastie Boys – who always preferred to put out a great record every five or six years, than a sub par album every 2 or 3! All these years after Paul's Boutique, when the world of difficult, expensive sample clearance could've kill the layers of pop pastiche sound bites that made P's B such a brilliant statement, the soul and funk samples are still piled on in abundance on this one (albeit with a more electro studio built backdrop), as are the block rockin' party rhymes – even if the tone is serious and strident in spots. There are no attempts at live funky jazz or punk rock this time – this may be the Beasties' most classifiable hip hop album in decades. Add it to that ever growing list of good-to-great albums by aging artists who were coaxed back into the game in part by their feelings about post 9/11 politics. Tracks include the great throwback single "Ch-Check It Out", "Right Right Now Now", "3 The Hard Way", "It Takes Time To Build", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Hey F**k You", "Triple Trouble", "Oh Word?", "That's It That's All", "All Lifestyles", "Shazam!", "An Open Letter To NYC" and more.
