Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassSounds Like Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass ... LP
A&M, 1967. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Sounds like Herb Alpert, but it grooves in ways that we hardly expected – playful, creative, and filled with so many more rhythms than just the Tijuana groove we might have thought! There's a real deepening sense of instrumental pop going on here – as Herb explores some of the darker strains brought into the market by younger groups and artists on the scene, and through some of the cross-cultural recordings that were opening up as the global music market expanded in the mid 60s. The Brass still get in plenty of their jaunty licks in the set, but there's also more of a sense of Herb as a standout man of his own – a mature, all-adult sound that's got some great brooding emotion from time to time. Titles include the great sample cut "Treasure Of San Miguel", "Casino Royale", "Wade In The Water", "Shades Of Blue", "Bo Bo", "Lady Godiva", "Town Without Pity", "Gotta Lot Of Livin To Do", and "The Charmer". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label stereo pressing. Includes the Herb Alpert inner sleeve. Cover has clear tape inside the opening, in fantastic shape otherwise.)

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassGoing Places ... LP
A&M, 1965. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Herb Alpert's definitely Going Places by the time of this set – and his trademark Tijuana Brass sound proves itself to be a great fit for just about any sort of number! The album kicks off with the wonderful "Tijuana Taxi", a sublimely jaunty tune that almost takes Herb into Bacharach territory – and which is followed up by the even-greater "Spanish Flea" – an ear-popping anthem that's one of the greatest bits of 60s instrumental pop ever recorded! And over and above those two tunes, the album's still got plenty more to offer too – a wonderful array of tracks all given the Tijuana touch, with titles that include "More & More Amor", "Mae", "Walk Don't Run", "Felicia", and "Cinco De Mayo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label stereo pressing. Vinyl has some cosmetic sleeve impressions. Cover has light wear and is discolored from age in back.)

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassLost Treasures – Rare & Unreleased ... CD
A&M/Herb Alpert Presents, 1960s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
Genius, pure genius – a wonderful collection of 22 rare numbers by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – all recorded during the group's years at A&M Records, and including a number of previously unreleased tunes! The sound here is completely sublime – way more than just the simple themes that you might expect from the TJB at the time, especially since there's a fair bit of numbers from Herb's late 60s years, when he was really opening into a wider range of modes explored by A&M Records on their Bacharach, Brazilian, soundtrack, and singer-songwriter releases. The whole thing's a key treasure in our 60s collection of instrumental pop – one that fills in a space we didn't even know we had! Titles include "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Julius & Me", "Happy Hour", "Promises Promises", "Whistlestar", "Killing Me Softy", "Chris", "Popcorn", "Flowers On The Wall", and "Up Cherry Street". CD

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassSRO ... LP
A&M, 1966. Very Good+ ... $5.99
A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! The set's one of the most no-nonsense Tijuana Brass sessions of the 60s – a tightly crafted album that has a bit more jazz than usual sneaking in on some of the tunes, but still enough of that snapping, punchy rhythmic approach that makes Herb and the group so great! As usual, the fluidity here is the strongest point – as the A&M touch takes a sound that should be hokey, and flips it into something really really groovy through warm use of compression in the studio. Titles include "Blue Sunday", "Bean Bag", "Work Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Mexican Road Race", and "Freight Train Joe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Brown label stereo pressing. Cover has light ring wear.)

A beautiful Holiday classic from Herb – recorded for A&M during his glory years, and done in the core Tijuana Brass style, but with some added arrangements on voices and strings by Shorty Rogers! The album's worth it alone for Herb's great take on the Bacharach groover "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle" – but it also includes the tasty track "Las Mananitas", plus the holiday favorites "Winter Wonderland", "Jingle Bells", "The Christmas Song", "Sleigh Ride", "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" and "Jingle Bell Rock". 10 tracks in all, the perfect backdrop for the holiday office party! Herb AlpertBeyond ... LP
A&M, 1980. Sealed ... $7.99
An incredible later record from Herb Alpert – working in a soulful funky fusion mode that really is well beyond the style that made him famous in the 60s! We love the easy breezy 60s sound of Herb & The Tijuana Brass too, but he really stepped up his game in exciting ways on records like Rise, and he takes some even further, previously unexplored creative steps on Beyond, this aptly titled set! Plenty of smoothed out funky fusion grooves, especially on the first half of the record, but by the midway point he's also dabbling in Spanish guitar inflected melodies, bringing in some spacey electronics and sequencing, and other daring twists – but never compromises on the consistently groovy feel overall. Includes "Kamali", "The Continental", "Reach For The Stars", "Red Hot", "Beyond", "Keep It Goin'", "The Factory" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, lightly shopworn, with a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Herb AlpertRise ... LP
A&M, 1979. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A whole new level of genius for Herb Alpert – a record that's light years away from his earlier work with the Tijuana Brass, and which has the trumpeter stepping strongly into the world of smooth jazzy fusion! The title track here went platinum the minute it was released – and became an end-of-the 70s instrumental anthem that seemed to drift out of speakers around the country. The rest of the album's pretty great too – built on the modes explored by Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, and other soulful fusion players of the 70s – but cast out with a bit more drama overall. Titles include the seminal jazz dance classic "Rotation" – plus "Rise", "Street Life", "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)", "1980", "Angelina", and "Love Is". LP, Vinyl record album
(Canadian half speed mastered Audiophile pressing in a gold border cover.)

Herb Alpert & OthersWhipped Cream & Other Delights – Re-Whipped ... CD
A&M/Shout Factory, 1960s/2006. Used ... $7.99
A surprisingly great take on the Tijuana Brass sound of the 60s – one that offers up new remixes of classics, but which is nicely respectful of the original Herb Albert groove! Unlike other remix projects of this type, which sometimes clutter up the tracks with too many extra bits – or abstract the originals past the point of recognition – this one maintains the sense of space, time, and rhythm that Herb first brought to his work in the 60s, while also updating the tunes with a 21st Century aesthetic. Remixers include Medeski Martin & Wood, Mocean Worker, Thievery Corporation, John King (Dust Brothers), and Anthony Marinelli – and titles include "Whipped Cream", "Taste Of Honey", "Green Peppers", "Bittersweet Samba", "Peanuts", "Love Potion #9", and "Butterball". Herb Alpert & The TJBYou Smile – The Song Begins ... LP
A&M, 1974. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Nice one from Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – working with arranger Quincy Jones! You Smile – The Song Begins comes at a pretty interesting point in which Herb was still working in the Spanish-inflected, jazzy instrumental groove of earlier years – but in a fresh way after a few quiet years. He's also starting to bring in the tighter, soul-based rhythmic sensibility he would more fully explore in the years to come! Bright, wonderful work – with a Bacharach arrangement on "I Might Frighten Her Away", Lani Hall vocals on "Save The Sunlight", and loads of great tunes including "Fox Hunt", "Legend Of The One Eyed Sailor", "Promises, Promises", "Last Tango In Paris", "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Dida" and more. ✨✧ Herb AlpertChristmas Wish ... CD
Herb Alpert, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nice little Holiday album from trumpeter Herb Alpert – whose 60s set with the Tijuana Brass might well be one of our favorite Christmas albums of all time! The TJB is long gone, but Herb's still in the lead – working with a larger orchestra directed by Chris Walden – who creates a shimmering array of strings, voices, and keyboards – all in an updated take of the older Herb Alpert sound – meaning that there's some nicely pointed moments that really fit the compressed, punchy horn sound that's always been Herb's calling card. The voices sometimes hit a more familiar Christmas chorus mode, but they're often then offset by Alpert's solo work – and titles include "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "The Christmas Song", "Santa Baby", "Winter Wonderland", "The Christmas Wish", "Merry Christmas Darling", and "What Are You Doing New Years Eve". Herb didn't remake "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle" – but his original 1968 version is maybe too perfect to mess with! CD
