Claudine ClarkAsk The Girl Who Knows – The Best Of Claudine Clark 1958 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A full helping of work from Claudine Clark – a killer 60s soul singer, and one with a really great ear for upbeat, romping tunes! Claudine originally hails from Georgia, but the work here is much more in Detroit, Chicago, or New York styles of the time – nicely moving numbers with a Motor City blend of tight instrumentation and bold lead vocals – sometimes a bit sweet, but always with enough power to keep up with the grooves in the tunes! The package does a great job of bringing together work from Claudine's varied recording career in the 60s – material done for labels that include Chancellor, Jamie, Fayette, Swan, Herald, and Match – under Clark's name, and the names of Joy Dawn and Sherry Pye as well. CD features full notes on Claudine's music and recording history at the time – plus 24 tracks that include "Party Lights (alt take)", "Gimme A Break", "A Sometimes Thing", "Easy To Love", "The Strength To Be Strong", "The Telephone Game", "Goodbye Mama", "Hang It Up", "Standing On Tip Toe", "Moon Madness", "My Turn To Laugh", "Who Will You Hurt", "Angel Of Happiness", "What Kind Of Party", and "Teenage Blues". ✨✧ Homesick James/Cousin LeroyDown Home Blues From Chicago To New York ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great split set of recordings – one that brings together a good deal of rare material from both the artists on the cover! The set begins with important Chicago recordings from Homesick James – great electrified work, but often with a quality that still echoes some of the rural roots of James' roots – recording with piano from Lazy Bill Lucas on most of the tracks, and supporting guitar from Johnny Shines and Hound Dog Taylor. The set includes both singles and unissued tracks for Chance Records, plus two tracks for Colt – and titles include "Long Lonesome Day", "12th Street Station", "Whiskey Headed Woman", "Set A Date", "Can't Afford To Do It", and "Lonesome Old Train". The second half of the set features material with similarly great guitar and vocals, but in a very different setting – material recorded by Cousin Leroy in New York, often with a tighter, more well-produced vibe! Leroy's vocals are fantastic – often really popping out into the lead with these majestic inflections – and a number of the tracks also feature piano from Champion Jack Dupree. The package features some unissued tracks next to singles for Groove, Ember, and Herald – titles that include "String Beans", "Up The River", "Sail On", "Rollin Stone", "Lonesome Bedroom", "Catfish", "41 Highway", "Waitin At The Station", and "Will A Match Box Hold My Clothes". ✨✧ Jungle BrothersStraight Out The Jungle (smoke colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warlock/Idlers, 1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set from the late 80s – one of the first records to really herald the new generation to come with De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest – served up by Native Tongues partners The Jungle Brothers! While this set never got the major label push that debuts by the other groups would have, the set was an instant sensation in the world of hip hop – the start of a new level of wit and wisdom – urban sensibility able to look back at itself, almost a postmodern commentary on the then-short history of hip hop! Production is great – and the JBs not only reworked use of classic samples, but also added a newly jazzy sensibility – on titles that include "On the Run", "Straight Out the Jungle", "Black Is Black", "Braggin & Boastin", "Behind The Bush", "Because I Got It Like That", and the classic "Jimbrownski". Zimbo TrioZimbo Com A Participacao De Hector & Heraldo (aka Zimbo) ... LP
RGE (Brazil), 1976. Very Good ... $11.99
A sweet 70s set from the amazing Zimbo Trio – a record that really has them stretching out with a much more complicated vibe than the bossa years – mixing in some elements of 70s Brazilian fusion, as they work with an expanded group that includes Hector Costita on sax, and Heraldo Do Monte on guitar! The sound is warm and open – never overindulgent, but stretching out in ways the core bossa trio could never do on their own – using the best rhythmic qualities of the sax and guitar to carve out some wonderful grooves! The album includes a very nice version of "Tudo Bem", a cover of Milton Nascimento's "Fe Cega Faca Amolada", and the cuts "Viola Violar" and "Laurecy Ate Ja". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousBirth Of Soul Vol 4 – Late 50s To Early 60s Black Music That Heralded The Soul Explosion ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s! A number of the artists here are familiar from R&B years, but they're represented by tracks that show a real change in their styles – and others are known from later successes, but stand out here with early work that's a lot more formative – making them a perfect choice for the collection. CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Come On & Stomp" by Marv Johnson, "Lil Valley" by The MMs & The Peanuts, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Irresistible You" by Bobby Peterson, "Take Your Heart" by Betty Willis, "Puff" by Kenny Lynch, "Jack Be Nimble" by The Intruders, "A Clock That's Got No Hands" by Della Reese, "I Came Running" by Wade Flemons, "You'd Be Crying Too" by The Matadors, "The Gypsy Said" by The Fiestas, "Please Don't Cry Anymore" by Ketty Lester, "Pretty Little Girl Next Door" by Bobby Day, and "Trouble I've Had" by Clarence Ashe. ✨✧ Bill EvansBirdland 1960 ... CD
Hi Hat (UK), 1960. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Rare live work from the Bill Evans Trio – captured at Birdland on several dates in 1960 – presented here on some well-recorded material that was originally broadcast on radio! The group is Evans' trio with the fantastic Scott LaFaron on bass – who really gets some great time in the spotlight – and a young Paul Motian is on drums, really opening up the role of that instrument in the trio too. The track list for this CD is culled from 3 dates in 1960, including a couple of alternate versions of some of the tracks – preceding the more heralded Village Vanguard sessions from '61 – and although some of these recordings have appeared in altered form on other reissued vinyl, they work together wonderfully on CD! Tracks include "Autumn Leaves", "Our Delight", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Nardis", "Blue In Green", "All Of You", and "Speak Low". CD

Jackie McLeanCapuchin Swing (RVG edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... $16.99
A tremendous set from Jackie McLean – perfectly poised between his hardbop and modern years, with a set of compositions that are as great as the performances! The lineup on this one's a bit unusual – with Walter Bishop on piano, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – but that mix of players makes for a really unusual sound – as the rhythm section's often straight ahead, Blue Mitchell's notes are bold and sparkling, and Jackie's own solos are reaching for the darker corners of the spectrum! There's a great sense of tension here that heralds the genius of later McLean sides of the 60s – and original titles include "Francisco", "Condition Blue", "On The Lion", and "Capuchin Swing". CD

Tom ZeEstudando O Samba ... CD
Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $9.99 12.98
A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Toc", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". VariousBanquet – The Underground Sounds Of 1969 (3CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1969. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A fantastic little set that heralds the beginning of a whole new generation in music – post-psych sounds from the year of 1969 – a time when the revolution had cooled a bit, but new waves of creative activity were really bubbling underground in the UK scene – as all these many groups and singers were striding forth to make their own sorts of sounds, after borrowing bits from others in previous years! The music here is more compact than later prog, but equally jamming – and some of the artists were born from blues and R&B inspirations, but are really moving into their own territory here – helping forge styles that would set the pace for so much more music to come in the 70s! The groups aren't completely obscure – most were recording for the hipper sides of bigger labels – but the tracks here often mark a point when they were just leaping off, a bit before hitting bigger fame – mixed with a few others that never hit the heights later on. As always with these boxes from Cherry Red/Esoteric, the presentation, set list, and notes are great – supporting 52 tracks from groups that include Colosseum, High Tide, Bloodwyn Pig, Jack Bruce, Pete Brown & Piblokto, Free, Jethro Tull, Genesis, East Of Eden, Man, Fat Mattress, Locomotive, Eyes Of Blue, Fairport Convention, The Deviants, Sunforest, Taste, Ten Years After, Mighty Baby, Michael Chapman, and many more! Janet's massive follow up to Rhythm Nation 1814 and it's a triumph, too – delivering on all the strengths of other peak era efforts and slyly working in some stylistic detours along the way – asserting herself here as strongly as ever! ✨✧ Arthur RussellCalling Out Of Context ... LP
Audika, Mid 80s-Early 90s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great collection of unreleased recordings by the great, largely unheralded Arthur Russell – one of the key players in the late 70s/early 80s NY underground – whose influence can be found everywhere from the smoky disco of the Paradise Garage scene to the dubby, arrhythmic, and percussive pounding of the post punk era! If you know anything about Russell, you know he hated to be nailed down. He's a classically trained cellist, who made his name producing now legendary disco numbers for Loose Joints and others. He went into the 80s exploring the kind of harder charging, minimalist grooving vibe that was kicked into effect by the unholy union of punk and dance music, but unlike some of the others Arthur still carried the soulful musicality of the 70s. The 12 tracks here are culled from sessions cut between 1985 and 1990 when Russell was signed to Rough Trade – and have gone completely unreleased until now! Most feature Russell on almost unrecognizable ambient cello, hypnotic vocals, and some of the coolest 80s drum programming you'll ever hear – with lots of cool synth notes and effects overdubbed, often with Peter Zummo on trombone and Mustafa Ahmed on percussion. It's really hypnotic, fairly raw, quite left of center but still very groovy stuff! If you appreciate the Ze Records scene, and all of those the great reissues of the NY post punk and disco years, this is totally essential! Tracks include "In The Deer Forest Part 1", "The Platform On The Ocean", "You And Me Both", "Calling Out Of Context", "Arm Around You", "Wild Combination", "Get Around To It" and more. Decca/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Well, they spelled "dikes" wrong in the title – but we can hardly fault them for that, as the set is a stunning batch of work from the Dutch scene at the end of the 60s – a really surprising powerhouse of new ideas and mindblowing music! Maybe that's no surprise, given the proximity of The Netherlands to the UK – which also means that the scene was probably drinking up as much pirate radio as listeners in London – and there's definitely work here to match some of the hippest Brit groups on Decca from the same generation. The set is huge 37 tracks in all – with work from The Sound Of Imker, Painting House, Supersister, The Tykes, Modesy Blaise, Names & Faces, Powera, The Heralds, Scarlets, Short 66, The Counts, Baldwin, BNZ, Dimitri, The Bumble Bees, The Boggy Green Selection, The Haigs, Amnsterdam, Airport, Jug Session, Alligatorman, World, The Freddies, and Nanda.
