HeavySons ... CD
BMG, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
A fierce full-on blend of rock and soul from The Heavy – not to be confused with Heavy, the more soul-based combo from a decade back! These guys are determined to cross over big, with a sound that really fits their look on the cover – a tight, sometimes tuff, blend of guitar, bass, and drums – often topped by a bit of horns to underscore some of the more soulful elements in the music. Titles include "The Thief", "Better As One", "Put The Hurt On Me", "Simple Things", "Fighting For The Same Thing", "A Whole Lot Of Love", "What Don't Kill You", and "Burn Bright". CD

✨✧ Lord Sutch & Heavy FriendsLord Sutch & Heavy Friends/Hands Of Jack The Ripper ... CD
Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1970/1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two Cotillion classics from Screaming Lord Sutch – back to back on a single CD! First up is Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends – an album that's almost equally well-known for its work by a host of famous guests – including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and others! Page is perhaps the most involved here – as he produced the set with Sutch, co-wrote some tracks, and plays some mighty searing guitar – as does Beck, which makes the album almost worth it alone for all the wonderful solos! But Sutch himself is pretty great too – kind of a mish-mash of late 60s nasty camp references, with the same sinister vibe as Kim Fowley – and an equally freewheeling approach to a tune that makes the album a heck of a lot of fun. Titles include "Gutty Guitar", "Flashing Lights", "Wailing Sounds", "Thumping Beat", "Union Jack Car", and "London". Hands Of Jack The Ripper is filled with weird and wild sounds from Screaming Lord Sutch – and a set that has as many "heavy friends" at play as his better-known previous album for Cotillion! As with that set, the vibe here is an odd mix of older beat group styles from mid 60s London, but filtered through a generation that's already bursting out with hard rock, psych, and prog inspiration – which means any nod towards older rock and soul roots come out sounding very offbeat in the end! Players include Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar, Keith Moon on drums, and Noel Redding on bass – and titles include "Country Club", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Bye Bye Johnny/Johnny B Goode", "Gotta Keep A Rocking", and "Hands Of Jack The Ripper", which is mini-horror movie itself! ✨✧ HeavyFirst Sessions ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Mid 2000s/2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer early work from Casey Benjamin and Nicole Guiland, aka Heavy – featuring unreleased material, rare vinyl only gems, and otherwise hard to come by grooves – it may be the First Sessions, but it sounds like the future of tripped out soul to us! The stuff here pre-dates the underrated Jazz Money LP they recorded for BBE – and it also reaches further back in inspiration, with influences of 70s funky soul and soul jazz in the mix, filtered through a modern lens. It's not as hip hop and 80s groove reliant, and they make it sound easy, but there's a lot going on here. We couldn't be more glad that our friends at Kindred Spirits put this excellent stuff on the agenda! Titles include "Do For You", "Sez Who Sez Me", "Summer Song", "Unbelievable", "Change", "Gwaan", "She Who Knows", "Wonderlove", "I Know My Way", "Just Can't Get" and more – including a Jazzanova remix of "Wonderlove", DJ Spinna remix of "Just Can't Get" and a Yam Who remix of "Do For You". Brecker BrothersHeavy Metal Be Bop ... CD
One Way/Arista, 1978. Used ... $4.99
No heavy metal here – just tight and funky jamming from the mighty Brecker Brothers! There's a bit more guitar here than on some of their other records – hence, possibly, the title – but the whole thing's still very much in that mix of soulful fusion and jazzy soloing that the pair forged strongly in the mid 70s. Keyboards and guitar jam strongly, but Randy and Michael still get in plenty of space for their solos – pushing their jazz licks with the jamming intensity that might normally be relegated to guitar heroes in the rock world. Tracks include "Inside Out", "Some Skunk Funk", "Sponge", "East River", "Funky Sea Funky Dew", and "Squids". CD

Al Cohn & Jimmy RowlesHeavy Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Xanadu, 1977. New Copy ... $8.99 15.99
Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Titles include "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Bar Talk", "These Foolish Things", "Them There Eyes", and "Sweet & Lovely". Features the bonus track "For All We Know". CD

✨✧ Johnny GriffinLady Heavy Bottom's Waltz ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the rarest Johnny Griffin albums ever – a set recorded as a side project when Griff was working with the Clarke Boland Big Band – in a lineup that features some of the best members from that great ensemble! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Titles include "The Turk's Bolero", "Deep Eight", "A Handful Of Soul", "Foot Patting", and "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz". CD

Orchestra HarlowHeavy Smokin ... LP
Fania, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A great early record by Larry Harlow's famous combo – every bit the "smokin" set that the title might imply! Harlow and the group are in full force here – ripping through a set of short tracks that really groove with a darkly percussive edge – not entirely a Latin Soul style, but not far off either – and definitely showing their strong ties to the youthful scene in Spanish Harlem! There's a surprising amount of traditional instrumentation in the set – especially considering the stoned out image on the cover – but that's no problem for us, given the overall quality of the set! Tracks include "Chancletas", "Orchestra Harlow", "Mi Guaguanco", "Adios Mama", and "Rica Combinacion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Geraldo PinoHeavy Heavy Heavy (Let's Have A Party/Afro Soco Soul Live) ... CD
Retro Afric (UK), 1970s. Used ... $11.99
They certainly got the title right on this one – because the groove is heavy heavy heavy, and the set is one of the funkiest African collections we've ever stocked! Geraldo Pino's often credited as the man who inspired part of the Fela sound of the 70s – and Pino was one of the first Africans to pick up the styles that James Brown was forging in the 60s, and recast them into a longer, more jamming mode that would eventually form the sound of Afro Funk. This set's the first collection we've ever seen of Pino's work – and it's a long-overdue set that adds a whole new chapter to the history of Afro Funk! Many tunes have skittish electric piano and organ riffing along with heavier percussion and guitar – in a way that creates a really unusual groove, and one that grabs our ears instantly! 12 tracks in all – including "Afro Soco Soul Live", "Let Them Talk", "Heavy Heavy Heavy", "Africans Must Unite", "Shake Hands", "Power To The People", "Let's Have A Party", "Right In The Centre", "On The Spot", and "Black Woman Experience". Bob Seger & The Last HeardHeavy Music – The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966/1967 ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Weather ReportHeavy Weather ... CD
CBS, 1977. Used ... $3.99
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler". Wood Brass & SteelHard & Heavy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sugar Hill/Soul Brother (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The incredibly rare second album from Wood Brass & Steel – the mighty funk group we've loved for years for their landmark debut from the mid 70s! This sophomore set is from a few years later, and has the group honing their groove even more – working with these righteous currents in their music that expand the sound into territory that's almost a bit like Roy Ayers at times! As with Ayers, the vocals are often layered into the rhythms – sometimes sung by group members with this soulfully flowing current that has a subtle, sublime sort of vibe – and which works perfectly for the message in the music. Tunes are often in the faster side of midtempo – but never conventional club or disco at all – and there's this really special quality to the whole record, one that even tops the unique vibe of their first album. The original album was very briefly issued by Sugar Hill, during a time when the label was mostly doing hip hop – and is impossibly hard to find in the original pressing. Titles include "Open Up Your Heart", "Be Yourself", "Long Live Music", "Space Walk", "Fly With Music", "Superstar", and "Are You Busy". LP, Vinyl record album

Perfect Toy (Germany), 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99
A really great take on the style of the funky compilation – one that mixes in lots of gritty garagey rock tracks along with a bit of vintage soul! The blend here is surprisingly seamless – as the rocking tracks often have a funky kind of groove, and the soul cuts sometimes have trippier elements in the mix – which makes the whole thing come together with a strongly color-blind sense of sound – even though things are pretty darn soulful throughout! Most numbers are from rare singles, but there's also some unreleased cuts – and very detailed liner notes that shed plenty of light on these very groovy sounds. Titles on volume 3 include "Down By The River" by Sand, "Afterthought" by Heart & Soul, "Sliding" by Enalpria, "Time Past & Present" by Sound Inc, "Pushin" by Milk & Cookies, "Lifeless" by Today's Tomorrow, "Who Cares" by Del Counts, "Louisville Luck" by Gin, "I'll Stop At Nothing" by Billy Gee & Whole Shabang, and "Tribute To Jimi Hendrix" by Rex Swanigan & Fabulous Troubadores. VariousWinds Of Time – The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal 1979 to 1985 (3CD set) ... CD
HNE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99
British heavy metal at the start of the 80s – a time when the UK scene was rising fresh from the big jolt of the punk generation – and also maybe starting to shine as the greatest place for metal in the world! There's an intensity to these tracks that really blows away some of the groups from the previous years – particularly those who'd risen to commercial heights on major labels – as many of the acts here began in the indie scene, where there was almost a merging with punk in terms of stripped-down production and frenzied instrumentation – all of which renewed urgency in the music, or maybe gave it a quality that it never even had before! And if you think you're not a heavy metal fan, you may well think again after hearing the set – because the choice of cuts here is wonderful, even from artists who later sounded more commercial – and the whole thing's tied together with a great set of notes as well. 51 tracks in all – with work by Fist, Angel Witch, Demon Pact, Satan, Elixir, Colossus, Savage, Dark Star, Hellanbach, Lautrec, Race Against Time, Aragorn, Axis, Witchfynde, Warfare, Gaskin, Venom, Shiva, Tysondog, Avenger, Soldier, Stormtrooper, Silverwing, Warrior, Tokyo Blade, Black Rose, Vardis, Jaguar, Diamond Head, Samson, Saxon, Chevy, Atomkraft, Brooklyn, White Spirit, Rock Goddess, and others! An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Continental/Groovie/Lion, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". Bonus tracks include "Sem Nada" and "18:30 Parte 1". LP, Vinyl record album

Salum Abdallah & Cuban Marimba BandNgoma Tanzania ... LP
Domino Sound, Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Pepper AdamsCool Sound Of Pepper Adams ... CD
Savoy, 1957. Used ... $7.99
A fantastic album from Pepper Adams – one of his best, and an incredibly swinging session that will make you forget that he's playing a heavy baritone! At some level, the session shouldn't work so well – as it's got a rhythm group that's not particularly hard-hitting – with Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and Adams' baritone is matched with the euphonium of Bernard McKinney, which should weigh the session down into even deeper depths. But for some reason, there was magic in the air when the album was recorded – and the group gels together perfectly, slinkily sliding through the tunes with all the coolness implied in the title, yet with a deep deep dose of Detroit soul from Adams and McKinney. Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Bloos Blooze Blues", "Skippy", and "Like What Is This?" CD

Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s touches too – a bit more emphasis on electric piano, played here by Hal Galper – and rhythms that are even funkier than before! Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, and King Errison on percussion – and titles include the excellent "Snakin' the Grass", which is just ripe for samplin', plus some other good grooves like "Second Son", "Saudade", "Five Of A Kind", and "Inside Straight". The quintet forged a sound that made them an immediate hit – and which had their tight, jagged, soul-drenched sound getting copied by everyone. A drum-heavy spectacular – recorded with a really rootsy feel! The first half of the material was recorded in Africa – not credited especially well, but done with a stripped-down sound that's very heavy on drums and other odd percussion instruments – recorded in that rough, loud Folkways style that really makes the music sound nicely bombastic. The remaining tracks on the set are from a variety of North and South American locales – Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and even the US – as Baby Dodds turns in a solo on the final track! Sesac (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the greatest albums in years from percussion Airto Moreira – a set that really lives up to the complex sort of grooves he first brought to our shores in the 70s! Airto's back home in Brazil for this set, and working with a really great lineup – a group that's heavy on acoustic elements, and which takes the musician back to the soaring spirit of his work in Quarteto Novo, and that time when both he and Hermeto Pascoal were getting the chance to start recording in America as well! There's none of the later fusion modes going on here – and production is nice and open, very organic – really allowing a fantastic flow from the mix of percussion, flute, guitar, saxes, and piano on the tunes. Honestly, the whole thing reminds us more of the album Seeds On The Ground or Natural Forces than it does most of Airto's records in later years – and titles include "Rosa Negra", "Misturada", "Alue", "Guarany", "Sea Horse", "Lua Flora", and "Nao Sei Pra Onde Mas Vai". Toshiko Akiyoshi & Her TrioLullabies For You ... LP
Columbia/Sony (Japan), 1965. Near Mint- ... $44.99
One of the most beautiful albums we've ever heard from Toshiko Akioshi – a wonderfully sensitive trio session that's quite different than her more bop-oriented work of the 50s! The mid 60s album features a fair bit of tunes pulled from traditional and Japanese sources – a few of the lullabies hinted at in the title, and a few more tracks with some slightly Eastern-styled themes. Toshiko's piano, while bold at times, also has a sensitivity that hadn't often shown up in her work by this point – a new sort of gentleness that's open to light colors and tones that really flesh out the album beautifully. Bass is by Yasuo Arakawa and drums are by Kanji Harada – and that's a young Monday Michiru sitting on the piano on the cover (and the album was also one of the last to bill Toshiko as "Mariano", referring to Monday's father Charlie.) Titles include "Mari To Tonosama", "The March", "Angel's Lullaby", "Tuppen Och Honan", "London Bridge", "Cancion De Extremadura", "Kanchororin Bushi", "I Ken Pien Tan", and "Chocho". Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". 2LP edition features both versions of the album that were released – one a heavy drums mix, the other a more fuzzy guitar mix! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". ✨✧ BamboosStep It Up ... CD
Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity, 2006. Used ... $4.99
Deep funk from down under – and the stunning full length debut by The Bamboos! To date, the group's really only had 2 45s to their name – but those records alone got The Bamboos plenty of attention – making this record one of the most eagerly-anticipated sets we've stocked in years! The groove is tight small combo funk at its best – done in the stripped-down, all-classic mode of artists on Daptone or Soul Fire – and certainly in the best style of supportive labelmates Quantic Soul Orchestra. The combo's a sextet, with Hammond, guitar, tenor, and trumpet all taking heavy lines through the mostly-instrumental session – hitting a sound that's a slightly jazzier take on styles The Meters or James Brown Band might have cut at the end of the 60s. Alice Russell sings on the cuts "Step It Up" and "Transcend Me" – but the rest of the album is short, tight, instrumental funk – with titles that include "Black Foot", "Golden Rough", "In The Bamboo Grove", "Tighten Up", "Eel Oil", "Tobago Strut", "Crooked Cop", and "Another Day In The Life Of Mr Jones". Capitol, 1975. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The best from The Band in years – their first all originals studio effort in a few years, and one that deservedly re-established them creatively, if not commercially, as one of the all time great rock bands! Robbie Robertson is solely credited for the compositions, but make no mistake, this record is by The Band – not just notes committed to a page and played – it's a fluid, intuitive and timeless album that we love nearly as much as anything they'd ever done – possibly as much as Big Pink or self-titled, even more on some days. Essential! Titles include "Rags & Bones", "Acadian Driftwood", "Hobo Jungle", "Ophelia", "Ring Your Bell", Jupiter Hollow" and "It Makes No Difference". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy Bang & William ParkerMedicine Buddha ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... $8.99
Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

Bar-KaysGotta Groove (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Volt/Craft, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Tracks include "In The Hole", "Funky Thang", "Grab This Thing", "Street Walker", "Humpin", and "Don't Stop Dancing To The Music (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

Tightly grooving work from The Bar-Kays – a set that's light years away from the sound of their Memphis roots, but still plenty darn funky overall! The album's got a tight bass-heavy approach to the music – the well-forged ensemble sound that graced the later years of the Bar-Kays' career, with nary a note out of place, and a sweet blend of keyboards over the bass, giving the tunes a strong electric feel – gliding wonderfully over romping rhythms on the upbeat tracks, and stepping sweetly on the album's few mellow gems. Titles include "Tripping Out", "Propositions", "Anticipation", "Do It (Let Me See You Shake)", "She Talks To Me With Her Body", and "You Made A Change In My Life". CD

A mid 70s album by Bobby Bare – the ambitious, concept-driven Hard Time Hungrys – a worthy effort from one the most unique voices and personalities of his era! This album is heavy with songs written by Bare family friend and frequent songwriting partner Shel Silverstein. Johnny Cash gets all the mainstream attention for collaborating with Shel on "A Boy Named Sue", but Shel and Bare have a far richer collaborative history together. There's also some very cool use of spoken word snippets, to tie the songs together – and titles include "Hard Time Hungrys", "The Farmer Feeds Us All", "Back Home In Huntsville Again", "Bottles And Boxes", "Truck Driver, Truck Driver", "The Unemployment Line" and more. Baroque Jazz TrioBaroque Jazz Trio ... LP
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of the most stunning jazz albums ever recorded – a blinding mix of harpsichord, cello, and Indian percussion – with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album was the brainchild of the cross-culturally fertile Saravah records at the end of the 60s – home to experimental work by Brigitte Fontaine, Barney Wilen, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and others. From the start, the group wanted to work in a boundary-less territory that really pushed the limits of jazz – drawing in inspiration from world music, and working in a style they called "baroque", to emphasize the bizarreness of their project. Given the heavy use of tabla on the set, the album's got a really driving rhythmic component – making for some funky numbers that have been sought-after jazz-dance tracks for years. And the role of the harpsichord is surprisingly strong – played in almost modal lines, but with a hesitating, lilting groove that's quite different to similar use of the piano at the time. Titles include "Delhi Daily", "Chandigardh", "Latin Baroque", "Zoma", and "Cesar Go Back Home". LP, Vinyl record album

A great album of salsa tracks recorded at the end of the 70s – when Ray was returning to the scene after a prolonged hand injury kept him out of music for a while. Despite this time off, though, Ray's in top top form – coming back to basics with a really heavy groove, picking up right where his early 70s Fania sides left off! Lead vocals are by the tremendous Adalberto Santiago, and titles include "Ya Vez", "Al Ver Sus Campos", "Adelante Siempre Voy", and highly percussive groover "Tumbao Africano", which runs for over 7 minutes long! UK West Indian ex-pats in vaguely sci-fi looking outfits team up with Martin Hannett for a blistering set of post punk guitar slashing that sadly seems to have become mostly a side bar in the history of the 80s UK scene – although sometime singer Don Letts did start Big Audio Dynamite later. None of the dubby effects of their singles and little of the reggae influence are at work here, but it's still worthy of more than a passing listen! 9 tracks in all, including "Riot", "No Ball Games", "Hard Work", "Immigration", "Last White Christmas", "Heavy Traffic", "Union Games", "Too Soon" and "Omega Man". Matsuli (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
One of the most compelling albums we've heard from the African scene of the 70s – a rare set from a Soweto group, and one that's got a heavy dose of spiritual jazz in the mix! The album almost feels more like the kind of set you'd hear by a Paris group, extrapolating African sounds in the post-colonial era – or an American group, inspired by roots from the homeland – and the group sports some especially great work on tenor, played by Themba Koyana, a player we've never heard before! Rhythms are great, with lots of percussion, and some nice funky undercurrents at times – and other instrumentation includes organ, which often works well with the echoey production. The album does have some occasional vocals, but the main focus is instrumental, which is very jazzy too – and titles include "Itume Leng", "Anishilabi", "Lishonile", and "Emampondweni". A really cool little album from the Beach Boys – a set that definitely takes its "party" title seriously, in a way that has the group singing in a somewhat live and spontaneous manner! There's sort of a "live in studio" feel here – with production that's less polished than on other records, and instrumentation that's heavy on acoustic guitar and percussion – almost like the group are hanging out at the beach, riffing on some of their favorite tunes. The album features the group's famous take on "Barbara Ann" – plus versions of a number of other 60s classics, like "The Times They Are A Changin", "Papa Oom Mow Mow", "Mountain Of Love", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", "Devoted To You", "Alley Oop", and "I Should Have Known Better". The set's got a really classic 70s salsa feel – a horn-heavy groove that almost effortlessly flows from a combo of strong players, topped by majestic vocals from Justo – stretching out soulfully with these wonderful inflections, timings, and turns that go far beyond the simple lyrics of the tunes. The record's almost a casebook study in the way that the Fania singers of the 70s could be completely expressive without resorting to any sort of over-emotive cliches – a new level of Latin masculinity in song, served up here with impeccable arrangements by Javier Vazquez. EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
Early work by Maria Bethania – recorded with a sound that's completely different than any of her later records – and pretty darn groovy, too! The backings here are by the combo of Luiz Carlos Vinhas – the pianist with Som Tres who was exploring a fair bit of rootsy and psychedelic influences in his own work. Here, Vinhas backs Maria with a really wonderful style that mixes heavy percussion with driving piano often set to modes that sway easily between jazzy and folkloric styles – and which often feature a fair bit of bossa influences as well. Bethania's vocals are still deeply rich, and somewhat emotive – but they adjust to this sort of setting with a lighter sense of the groove that we really really love. Titles include a wonderful version of Vinhas' great "Ye Me Le", plus Edu Lobo's "O Tempo E O Rio", and the tracks "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Dois De Fevereiro", "Preconceito", and "Andanca".
