✨✧ VariousHeavenly Ethiopiques – The Best Of The Ethiopiques Series ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The definitely got the title right on this one – because the set is filled with some of the most heavenly tracks from the legendary Ethiopiques series – that legendary run of compilations that was the first introduction for most of us to the amazing music of Ethiopia! This package really zeros in on all the best bits – and has a special focus on the early 70s, with some other bits from the 60s as well – all the wonderful vintage material that captures that special time in Ethiopian music when the artists were really taking some new chances with their sound – and creating an otherworldly blend of jazz and funk with more local elements as well. The range of artists is great – a really compelling blend of singers and instrumentalists, not just a handful of tracks by Mulatu – and titles include "Presentiment" by Tsegue Maryam Guebrou, "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Hedetch Alu" by Muluquen Mellesse, "Lantchi Biye" by Tlahoun Gessesse, "Tchereqa" by Menelik Wesnatchew, "Ashasha Beyew" by Abbebe Tessemma, "Ati Fettun Isani Infedhani" by Ali Birra, "Mela Mela" by Seyfou Yohannes, "Teredjew Neber" by Ayalew Mesfin, and "Hametegnaw" by Seyoum Gebreyes. Mahmoud AhmedEre Mela Mela (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Buda/L'Arome/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard in your life – an assortment of mid 70s tunes from Mahmoud Ahmed, the second grooviest Ethiopian artist, next to Mulatu! Ahmed's sound is a lot more out there than Mulatu's – less funky and jazz-based, and more in the mode of snakey rhythms, complicated guitar parts, and vocals that have a melancholy quality that's simply amazing. This set features tunes that recently appeared on volume 7 of the Ethiopiques CD series – but which are presented here in the format of the original 1975 LP! Titles include "Ere Mela Mela", "Ohoho Gedama", "Tezeta", "Abbay Mado", "Atawurulegn Lela", and "Endenesh Gedawo". LP, Vinyl record album

Laurent Bardianne & Tigre D'Eau DouceHymne Au Soleil ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A beautiful hymn to the sun from saxophonist Laurent Bardianne – an artist who's not afraid to play with the rhythms a bit, while still offering up some jazz-based material at the core! Bardianne plays tenor in a quintet that also has lots of great Hammond organ from Arnaud Roulin – and both artists add in a bit of electronics too – but the most striking aspect of the record might be the rhythms, which are served up in blend of bass from Sylvain Daniel, drums from Philippe Gleizes, and percussion from Roger Raspail – all players with a real global sensibility, who push the music past standard jazz, with a very free-flowing vibe. The whole thing's very much in the best cross-cultural mode that we love from the French Heavenly Sweetness label – and titles include "La Vie La Vie La Vie", "Adieu My Lord", "Destination Danger", "Verte Gronouille", "Sarang", and "Kenya Sunrise". BlundettoGood Good Things ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. Used ... $6.99 8.99
The title might seem familiar – given that Blundetto's first album was called Bad Bad Things – but this record really shows a strong evolution of his sound over the ten years since that release – the shifting sense of sound between hip hop, global roots, and more dynamic elements – sounding even better here than on any previous records! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Titles include "Fly High", "Pais Azucar", "Barcelona", "Sunday In The Club", "Feel The Cold", "Bingi", "Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta", "Antiguas", and "Mo'Dinero". CD

Bonbon VodouCimitere Creole ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A really beautiful little record – one that bills itself as coming from from creole roots and French chanson – and which definitely delivers the goods as promised! The rhythms are often nice and lean – bubbling, percolating elements that maybe echo some older styles from the Antilles – which are then blended with male and female vocals that have a spare, poetic quality – almost like some of the lyrics you'd hear in some of the classics on the Saravah Records label from years past – a mode that's also echoed strongly in the cross-cultural approach of the record! The whole thing's wonderful – a really special standout that feels very different than anything else we've heard in awhile – with titles that include "Rituel", "De Colere", "Si La Pluie Te Mouille", "Le Pied Dans La Tombe", "Si Rogre", "Petit Palace", and "Les Escailles De Chastete". Heavenly Sweetness (Netherlands), 2022. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Some of the most beautiful music we've ever heard from Guts – very different than the spare productions of earlier years, thanks to the presence of dozens of guest stars – singers and musicians who help to open up the music with the sounds of Havana and West Africa combined! Most of the music is live, not programmed as in earlier Guts projects – and in a way, the shift is a bit like that made by Quantic when he started to explore the roots of Latin music – but with results here that are even more acoustic and organic, and overflowing with a sense of joy and life throughout! A truly wonderful set – and so different than anything we might have expected – with titles that include "Dakar De Noche", "Medewui", "Dejame En Paz", "San Lazaro", "Ultima Llamada", "Yebo Edi Pachanga", "Sin Pantallas", "Barrio", "Dansons Cadences", and "Nunca Pierdo". Anthony JosephRich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Anthony Joseph has been one of the most righteous talents to emerge in recent years – and each new record just seems to go deeper and deeper – with a sense of righteous energy that you can probably guess here from the title! We dare say that this set may be Joseph's best recording ever – done with superb arrangements by producer Jason Yarde, who makes great use of a jazz-based ensemble that features work from Shabaka Hutcings Denys Baptiste on tenor and bass clarinet, Florian Pelissier on piano and organ, and Yarde himself on alto and baritone! There's a sense of mission in Anthony's music that we've never heard this strongly – and the tracks move with a sense of majesty that really fits the words – on titles that include "Maka Dimweh", "Calling England Home", "Kamau", "The Gift", and "Language". VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 1 ... LP
Ahma/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
A seminal album of sounds from the groundbreaking Ethiopian scene at the start of the 70s – a full length collection of previous 45s from the excellent Ahma Records label – home to revolutionary sounds that continue to influence new generations of listeners! The music here represents the Golden Age at its peak – sounds that partly reform older traditions with new modernist ideals, partly shift sideways from western influences, to the sorts of enigmatic, other-worldly styles you'd know from the music of Mulatu and some of his contemporaries! And lest you think that "hit parade" means commercial crass, think again – because these tunes are every bit as mindblowing as the music you'd find on the seminal Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Addis Abeda Bete" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Tezeta" by Seifu Yohannes, "Yeberehe Lomie" by Abayneh Degene, "Gara Ser Naw Betesh" by Teshome Meteku, "Asha Dedawo" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Ayamaru Eshete" by Essatu Tessema, and "Hedech Alu" by Muluken Melesse. VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 2 ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
A totally wonderful collection of Ethiopian sounds, circa 1972 – all pulled from a moment when the sound of the nation was really beginning to change in radical ways! The tracks here are sometimes funky, sometimes a bit more spiritual – and they showcase that bold new spirit that was coming into play during the golden age of Ethiopian music – a time when new ideas were opening up all over the scene, as east African artists borrowed a bit from American ideas, wove things together with older Ethio styles, and came up with a revolutionary new sound in the process! The whole thing is wonderful – and titles include "Munaye" by Mulatu, "Yezemed Yebada" by Teshome Meteku, "Balengerie" by Abayneh Degene, "Temhert Bete" by Amemayehu Esthete, "Belew Bedubaye" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Mote Adeladayou" by Teshome Meteku, "Enbayen Teregiew" by Muluken Melesse, and "Fikir Bekumena" by Essatu T & Seyfu Y. Amazing music from the golden years of Ethiopian Music – a set of tracks that will take you beyond the music of Mulatu, into a wealth of other talents from the scene at the same time! The sound here is incredible – a mix of heavy funk, spacey jazz, and other exotic touches all coming together – a unique sort of sound that's beyond referent, and which is easily some of the freshest music on the planet back in the 70s! The vinyl-only collection pulls tracks from different volumes of the Ethiopiques CD titles – and offers up a strong focus on the funkiest and grooviest numbers from that legendary series. Tracks include "Muziqawi Silt" by Wallias Band, "Hasabe" by Ayalew Mesfin, "Antchin Yagegnulet" by Tamrat Ferendji, "Amlak Abet Abet" by Asselfetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret, "Temeles" by Alemayehu Eshete & Hirut Bequele, and "Aynotchesh Yerefu" by Samuel Belay. VariousJazz A Vienne – Past & Future ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 90s/2000s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A wonderfully wide-ranging collection of work brought together in support of a long-running music festival in France – done here as a double-length set that offers up a "Past" disc of material recorded at the festival in previous years – and a "Future" disc that points the way towards new directions in European jazz! The set's worth it for the Past disc alone – as it offers up some never-heard recordings in jazz, Latin, and Brazilian modes – a nicely diverse array of tracks that have that open vibe of a really special live moment at a concert – similar to some of the best Montreux jazz recordings over the years! Titles include "Toda Menina Baiana" by Gilberto Gil, "Panamerica" by Lalo Schifrin with David Sanchez on tenor, "Chan Chan" by La Banda De Santiago De Cuba, "Delilah" by the Milt Jackson/Hank Jones Quartet, "Manalyuca" by McCoy Tyner with Gary Bartz & Ravi Coltrane, "I'll Stay" by Roy Hargrove & RH Factor, and "Soweto Sorrow" by the trio of Louis Sclavis on bass clarinet, Henri Texier on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. The Future disc is great too – with new recordings in a range of jazzy styles, mostly by younger French artists – with titles that include "On Dimanch Maten" by Arnaud Dolmen, "Baby Rover" by Jasual Cazz, "Strength" by Emile Londonien, "Olioqui Valley" by Ishkero, "Soulful" by Leon Phal Quintet, and "Tryin Times" by Abraham Reunion. Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. Tracks include "Yebeqagnal" and "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Queresh Endewaza" by Samuel Belay, "Ewnetegna Feqer" by Hirut Bequele, "Lomiwen Teqebeletch" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Gedamay" by Getatchew Mekurya, and "Metche New" by Asselefetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret. A sweet set of grooves from around the globe – all the sorts of tracks that Guts plays in his legendary DJ sets overseas – music that's got a much more far-reaching vibe than some of the tracks he issues under his own name! Overall, the set's very much in the best spirit of the Heavenly Sweetness label – especially in the way that company brings together music from so many different times and scenes around the planet – music that's taken even further here in the rich array of tunes that Guts serves up! The first-ever solo album from Kweku of Ghana – who you've likely heard as KOG on projects with Nubiyan Twist, Onipa, and others – really sounding great here with a colorful vibe that really fits the image on the cover! The rhythms percolate nicely throughout – lean beats mixed with live percussion and some jazzier instrumentation – only occasionally hitting more familiar West African modes, as KOG borrows bits of influence from his colleagues in the UK – and works in all these cool currents of contemporary soul as well! Titles include "Mayedeen", "Like A Tree", "Shidaa", "Lord Knows", "Ayinye", "Ebeneezer", and "No Way" – which features guest work from the legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley! LP, Vinyl record album

The first-ever album of solo bass work from Kham Meslien – a player whose contributions have graced a number of different groups in recent years, but who maybe sounds even more powerful here on his own! There's a warmth to the music that makes the solo bass performance very different than the sort of set you'd hear on ECM – a lot more like French material of the 70s, especially some of the music of bassist Henri Texier in his youth – with colors and feelings that come from beyond the boundaries of jazz, but worked together with a warmth on the instrument that balances improvisation with a subtle sense of structure. Titles include "Ta Confiance", "Mauza", "The Alarm", "Kar Kar Kar", "Gnawen", "F Comme", and "La Saule Pleureur" – and Anthony Joseph makes a guest vocal appearance on "La Coleur". CD

L'Arome/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mad grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – featuring work by the enigmatic Mulatu, plus some of the other extra-cool artists on that country's groundbreaking soul and funk scene! Mulatu plays Fender Rhodes and organ on his tracks – grooving with a slow, snakey approach that's almost a bit like the work of Sun Ra, but which also has distinct African touches. The sound here is quite different than the Nigerian funky work of the 70s – much more laidback and open-ended, with less American influences, and a really unique approach! Titles include "Yekermo Se", "Yegele Tezeta", "Munaye", "Metche Dershe", "Kasalefkut Hulu", and "Tezeta" by Mulatu Astatque; "Heywete" and "Bemgnot Alnorem" by Bahta Gebre Heywet; and "Yetesfa Tezeta" by Tesfa-Maryam Kidane. Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mad funk from Ethiopia – classic work by the legendary Mulatu, one of Africa's heaviest artists of the 70s! Mulatu's been kind of a beathead secret for years – as most of his exotic grooves were never issued properly outside of Africa, and have only been the province of collectors who had the money and cash to get their hands on the work. The music's got a strange, other-worldly feel – a mix of bass-heavy dubby rhythms and spaced-out jazzy solos played on saxophone and electric piano – all coming together in a unique style that will blow your mind! The LP is the first-ever proper vinyl reissue of Mulatu's work – and collects together the best tracks from the recent Ethiopiques CD series, 9 titles that include "Yekatit", "Nesanet", "Sabye", "Ykermo Sew", "Asmarina", "Gubelye", "Dewel", and "Ene Alantchi Alnorem". Nicely spare work from these two French musicians – both of whom handle a mix of saxes and keyboards on the record, almost with a vibe that recalls some of the more electro-styled global projects from the European scene of the 80s! The music would almost be a good fit for the early spirit of the Crammed Discs label – with traces of elements from points around the globe, delivered in a lean style that just features, beats, keyboards, and saxophone elements – less jazz than previous work from Laurent Bardianne, but no less compelling.
