✨✧ Tim BuckleyStarsailor ... LP
Warner/Straight, 1970. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from the legendary Tim Buckley – and one of the records that truly shows why his music was unlike anything else that ever came before! The blend of folksy and jazzy roots really takes off here – stretching forth at times with a spacious feel that's airy, yet full of feeling – as Tim's magnificent vocals are backed by key instrumentation from Lee Underwood on guitar and organ, plus a small lineup of tenor, flute, trumpet, and bass – all bringing some jazzy phrasing to the mix. Tim himself plays 12 string guitar, at a level that's both complex yet completely organic – and titles include the sublime "Song To The Siren", a heavenly tune that perfectly sums up his genius, and which would be enough of a legacy, even if it was the only cut he ever recorded – plus "Monterey", "Come Here Woman", "Jungle Fire", and "Starsailor". ✨✧ Stanley BrothersStanley Brothers Starday/King – Gospel Set – 1958 to 1965 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Heavenly sounds from this legendary duo – a great collection of spiritual sides the bluegrass brothers recorded for King and Starday Records – all material that was maybe even more important to their catalog than their secular singles! Ralph and Carter Stanley have a fantastic harmony approach – and like their contemporaries, the Louvin Brothers, their vocal style is wonderfully suited to gospel songs – not the sounds you'd know from Chicago churches, or mainstream televangelists – but instead the songs from the hills, almost best delivered in the private, personal manner that was such a big part of old time music, carried forward into the bluegrass years. The guitar and banjo work of the pair is more subdued at times here – leaving even more wonderful focus on their vocals – and the 4CD set features 42 tracks in all – with titles that include "This World Is Not My Home", "Beautiful Life", "Farther Along", "The Darkest Hour Is Just Before The Dawn", "Where The Soul Never Dies", "I Just Dropped By", "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", "Oh Death", "Shoutin On The Hills Of Glory", "The End Of The Road", and "Building On That Rock". GutsPhilantropiques ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! The set includes work by plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Pat Kalla, Pinduca, Nazare Pereira, Emma Lamadji, Kandy Gura, CAtia Werneck, Djeuhdjoah, and others – on titles that include "Voyaging Bird", "Ja Nao Ha Mais Paz", "Li Dous Konsa", "Sa Ce Kado", "Kenke Corner", "Mucagiami", "Penda", and "Matadou". Ill ConsideredIll Considered 5 ... LP
Ill Considered (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
This brilliant British collective never lets us down – and here, on their majestic fifth album, they seem to soar towards the heaven even more – with a righteous spirit that comes through from the very first note, and which never seems to let up at all as they spin out some long, beautiful tracks that are filled with heavenly soul! In a generation where other groups are maybe reworking the spiritual jazz modes of the 70s, Ill Considered are finding a space that's completely their own – unabashedly open to new modes of expression, and in a way that creates a beautiful balance between darkness and light! At the start, the bass work of Leon Brichard seems to be the guiding force at the core of the tunes, but the drums of Emre Ramazanoglu take over more once things get going – all while the unrelenting reed work of Idris Rahman just keeps burning brightly, as Satin Singh fills in all the spaces with his percussion. Titles include "Calling", "Northern Spiral", "Professor", "Incandescent Rage", and "Unicorn". LP, Vinyl record album

KOG & The Zongo BrigadeWahala Wahala – Joy From The Struggle ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness/Pura Vida (France), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Really driving percussion, and some great horns as well – the former served up by KOG, who also delivers some fantastic vocals on the set – the latter from The Zongo Brigade, who work in a great mix of funky rhythms, jazzy horns, and some sweet keyboards too! The set's very different than most Afro Funk albums in recent years – with an unbridled style that's clearly driven by the energy of KOG, whose expressions really have things leaping out on most tracks right from the start – then keep things warm all the way through. Titles include "For My Money", "Medowo", "Imela", "Agoro", "Mona Lisa", "Transmission", "Mad Up", "Dr Mensa", "Sahara", and "Suro Nipa". CD

✨✧ VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 1 ... LP
Ahma/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album of sounds from the groundbreaking Ethiopian scene at the start of the 70s – a full length collection of previous 45s from the excellent Ahma Records label – home to revolutionary sounds that continue to influence new generations of listeners! The music here represents the Golden Age at its peak – sounds that partly reform older traditions with new modernist ideals, partly shift sideways from western influences, to the sorts of enigmatic, other-worldly styles you'd know from the music of Mulatu and some of his contemporaries! And lest you think that "hit parade" means commercial crass, think again – because these tunes are every bit as mindblowing as the music you'd find on the seminal Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Addis Abeda Bete" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Tezeta" by Seifu Yohannes, "Yeberehe Lomie" by Abayneh Degene, "Gara Ser Naw Betesh" by Teshome Meteku, "Asha Dedawo" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Ayamaru Eshete" by Essatu Tessema, and "Hedech Alu" by Muluken Melesse. ArtisticsI Want You To Make My Life Over ... LP
Brunswick, 1969. Sealed ... $14.99
One of The Artistics' most beautiful albums for Brunswick – and the one that includes the title song that was perhaps their greatest single! "I Want You To Make My Life Over" is a classic bit of Chicago soul – done at a level that really sums up all the sophisticated changes the city had brought to the music at the start of the 70s – and served up with cool vibes, great vocals, and a heavenly production style that wraps up the harmonies tightly together, and floats them over the top with nary a wrinkle! That cut kicks off the album, and things only just get better and better – on titles that include "Just Another Heartache", "Nothing But Heartaches", and "Trouble Heartache & Pain" (hey, these guys had a lot of heartache!) – plus "Out In The Country", "Sugar Cane", and "What The World Needs Now". Production's by Chi-soul geniuses Carl Davis, Willie Henderson, and Eugene Record. LP, Vinyl record album

Professor Harold BoggsLord Give Me Strength – Early Recordings 1952 to 1964 ... CD
Nashboro/Gospel Friend, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.98
The first full length collection we've ever seen to focus on the soulful gospel work of Harold Boggs – one of the greatest male lead singers of the pre-soul generation! Right from the start, Boggs was a hell of a singer, and a great songwriter too – and he first entered the business after getting a few songs recorded by King Records, who feature here on some of the earliest tracks – before Harold then moved over to Nashboro, where his vocal talents really took off! The work here is mostly from that point when gospel recordings were quite raw and stripped-down – with a very sharp focus on the lead singer, which gives Boggs some tremendous time in the spotlight. The package features 28 tracks in all – and titles include "The Half Has Never Been Told", "That's It", "Everything Is Going To Be Alright", "What's Happening Christians", "When It Hits You", "Inside The Beautiful Gate", "I Want To Live Right", "Someone's Gone Home", "Doing All The Good We Can", and "My Loving Mother Prayed". Also features two songs with Lula Reed on vocals – "Heavenly Road" and "My Mother's Prayer". CD

Love UnlimitedFrom A Girl's Point Of View ... LP
Uni/Mercury, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the album was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. The White genius is very firmly in place – and is fantastic here mixed with female lead vocals – with this strong current of soul at the bottom, sweeping strings on the top, and a surprisingly badass sound that really makes the record different than most other girl group records. The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! SupremesSupremes – Produced & Arranged by Jimmy Webb ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
An overlooked moment of 70s genius from The Supremes – and from the great Jimmy Webb as well – given that the pop studio genius wrote, arranged, and produced the entire album! Jimmy had plenty of famous work under his belt by this point in time – including his famous collaborations with 5th Dimension – but the sound here is something completely different entirely, and very different than Webb's own records, as he was starting to find a voice of his own. Instead, the man is more than happy to let the vocals of the Supremes flow forth in this really heavenly way – with Jean Terrell now in the group instead of Diana, but never missing a beat in the lead – as she soars out in this sophisticated mix of strings and soul that's completely sublime! The songs are very fresh territory for the group, and the use of mostly Webb material on the record makes for a very unified set – almost the Supremes' answer to Minnie Riperton's fantastic first album with Charles Stepney, Come To My Garden. Titles include "Once In The Morning", "Cheap Lovin", "When Can Brown Begin", "Beyond Myself", "I Guess I'll Miss The Man", "All I Want", "I Keep It Hid", and "5:30 Plane". CD

Viscaynes featuring Sly StoneViscaynes & Friends ... LP
ORG, Early 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99 24.98
Really great work from The Viscaynes – a unique mixed-race band from the northern end of the Bay Area scene at the start of the 60s – and one that provided an early launching pad for the talents of the legendary Sly Stewart! The group sound different than Sly's Family Stone, but have a similar role in soul music during their own period – male and female voices coming together with a great love of doo wop and early group soul modes, often working with arrangements by the young Stewart, who also adds in plenty of guitar to the mix as well. The tunes have much more of an east coast feel than you'd guess – very much in the best Philly street corner vibe – and titles include "You've Forgotten Me", "Help Me With My Broken Heart", "Yellow Moon", "You're My Only Love", "A Long Time Alone", "Heavenly Angel", and "Uncle Sam Needs You". Also features related tracks – "Without Success" by The Individuals, and "Eight Reasons Why" and "Mama Told Me" by The Precisions. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LJ JohnsonLJ's Love Suite ... LP
AVI, 1979. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Sexy soul magic from LJ Johnson – not to be confused with ex-Dramatic LJ Reynolds, but a great singer in his own right! LJ's got a sweet vocal approach that's almost that you'd hear from earlier years, on east coast vocal group records – but here, he's working in a fuller, richer mode that often dips into disco-based territory with full arrangements, driving percussion, and a set of female voices behind LJ's own. And these upbeat tracks are all pretty nice, thanks to some Danny Leake arrangements – but our favorite numbers are the mellower ones – especially the tunes "Staring in Space" and "Things Will Work Out in the End" – both of which have this great stretched out feel, with a heavenly spacey quality that we just love!
