Chris & CoseyHeartbeat ... LP
Rough Trade/Conspiracy International (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
The amazing first album from Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti – done after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle, and in a way that really sets the duo apart from the rest of the group! The music is dark, but also very tuneful – analogue electronics used much more clearly than on most TG material – with voices that are processed in ways that work perfectly next to the Casio keyboards and guitars. The whole thing's great – so different than all the others who tried to imitate this mode – and way more than just another cold wave footnote too. Titles include "Put Yourself In Los Angeles", "This Is Me", "Voodoo", "Moorby", "Radio Void", "Just Like You", "Bust Stop", "Heartbeat", and "Manic Melody". LP, Vinyl record album

Taana GardnerHeartbeat (club mix, party version) ... 12-inch
West End, 1981. Very Good+ ... $4.99
An undisputed classic! The funky grooves of this early 80s single by Taana make it our favorite by her – and it's a non-stop killer that's served up here in a 9 and 6 minute version. Used as the sample for "Buddy" by De La Soul, and for a whole bunch of other tracks too! A monster! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Original pressing, in a West End sleeve, which has some light wear.)

✨✧ Curtis MayfieldHeartbeat ... LP
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Near Mint- ... $8.99
A real dancefloor set from Curtis – recorded with some sweet Philly production from the likes of Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler – in the sweeping, soaring, strings-heavy mode of the Philly disco records of the time! And yes, this isn't classic Curtis from the righteous years – but the surprising thing is how well his voice really holds up in the tracks – coming through with a strength that's fresh and surprising, given some of his disco contemporaries, and sounding pretty darn nice overall, thanks to some tight arrangements by the likes of Fred Wesley, Norman Harris, and Gil Askey. Linda Clifford does a duet with Curtis on "Between You Baby & Me", and the other cuts include "Victory", "Tell Me Tell Me", "You're So Good To Me", "You Better Stop", and "Over The Hump". Pure old school enjoyment from Kool Moe Dee, Special K and LA Sunshine, that'll send you down memory lane back to the roller rink over Taana Gardner's infectious "Heartbeat" groove, a sample that would pop up time and again over the years, though we're happiest to hear it here! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Martha VelezAmerican Heartbeat ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
One of the more polished efforts we've heard from singer Martha Velez – but one that's done in a way that really stays true to her sound! Given that Martha started out as sort of a soul/rock crossover artist at the beginning of the 70s, this album marks a nice evolution into more sophisticated modes that change with the music – a bit of disco here, some fuller soul styles there – all arranged by Stephan Galfas, David Seance, and Velez herself. Titles include "Up To You", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Once In Awhile", "Leaving Love That's Good", "Crossover", "When You Were Beautiful", and "We're Gonna Last". LP, Vinyl record album

Another Lee Perry collection? You bet! There's mountains and mountains of material out there, and this collection selects some choice bits from the fertile Black Ark period, when Perry and crew were in fine style! An excellent collection showcasing the gentler gender's work for Coxsone Dodd! Collins KidsRockin'est ... CD
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A killer collection from one of the coolest rockin acts of the 50s – a pair of younger kids, but who work together with a fire and frenzy that honestly beats most of the bigger rockabilly acts of the time! The Collins Kids are the stuff of legend – the kind of act that could hardly emerge today, especially on a major label – as it's almost as much of a surprise that these singles were recorded for Columbia Records during their big pop years, as it is how great the duo are together! Almost every track is upbeat, fast-riffing, and in that perfect spot between early rock and hillbilly – and the CD features 22 gems that include "Beetle Bug Bop", "Hoy Hoy", "Whistle Bait", "Hot Rod", "I'm In My Teens", "Hush Money", "The Rockaway Rock", "Hop Skip & Jump", "Mercy", "Party", "They're Still In Love", "Heartbeat", and "Go Away Don't Bother Me". KoopWaltz For Koop (German version) ... CD
Jazzanova (Germany), 2001. Used ... $3.99
The first full album from Koop – and one of the best new records on Compost in years! Koop have a jazzier touch than some of the label's groups – almost going back to the earliest days of the label, and working in a sound that's much more faithful to the jazzy roots that have inspired so many of the artists in the ever-growing Compost posse. Tracks are a wonderful blend of acoustic bass, snare rhythms, warm piano lines, and soulful vocals – handled by a host of guest stars that really make the album sparkle! The whole thing dances like a European modal jazz set from the 70s – and is clearly worthy of "instant classic" status in our book! Titles include "Tonight", "Soul For Sahib", "In A Heartbeat", "Modal Miles", "Bright Nights", "Waltz For Koop", "Baby", and "Summer Sun". CD

Creed Taylor OrchestraShock – Music In Hi Fi ... LP
ABC, 1958. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Very cool work from Creed Taylor – material cut when he was still a bandleader, and hadn't yet evolved into the role of super-producer! The session's a long way from the CTI sound of the 70s – and instead has Creed playing some very spooky stuff – compositions by Kenyon Hopkins that have a horror sort of theme – dark little tunes that would be a perfect soundtrack for a haunted house! The core instrumentation is jazz-based, but augmented with some great other touches as well – and there's two female voices that scream, groan, and make other odd noises on the record from time to time. Titles include "The Long Walk", "Jungle Fever", "Heartbeat", "Haunted House", "In Bedlam", "Time Runs Out", and "The Secret". LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Storming groovers from the UK scene of the mid 60s – all gems from that special moment when female British singers were often working with a heavy dose of soul! You'll recognize a few of the names here, and will discover a lot more along the way – and although there have been other collections of this nature over the years, we can say that this one is plenty darn fresh – in part because it's got a good number of tracks that appear here on CD for the first time ever! Instrumentation and production is fantastic – clearly inspired by Motown and other soulful American sources, then tipped towards the special talents of the UK singers on the set – and delivered with a socking soul style that's pretty darn great all the way through. 25 tracks in all, very detailed notes, and a superb set list that includes "32nd Love Affair" by Friday Brown, "I Like A Man" by The Caravelles, "My Street" by Millie, "So Little Time" by Diana Dors, "I Really Got Carried Away" by Madeline Bell, "No One Can Take Your Place" by Karol Keyes, "Eeny Meeny" by Ayshea, "The Music Attracts Me" by Clare Torry, "Small Town" by Kiki Dee, "Love Makes The World Go Round" by Sharon Tandy, "Wishin My Life Away" by Angelina, "Girls Like Boys" by Ethna Campbell, "Make Him Mine" by Susan Maughan, "Heartbeat" by Dusty Springfield, "Keep On Lovin Me" by The Kaye Sisters, and "The Thought Of You" by Jenny Wren. TK/Solid (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... $23.99
A soulful message from the 70s – served up here on a collection that focuses on a mighty nice side of the TK Records label from back in the day! TK hit big fame with its Miami spin on disco in the mid 70s, but the label also had a great ear for other sorts of soul music too – and here, the focus is on the warmer, more sophisticated modern soul tracks that marked their output away from the chart hits – work created in the south, but with a hip vibe that resonates strongly with the best work in New York, Philly, or other northern cities. The tracks are all hand-picked by DJ Ryuhei The Man – who also does his own edits of a few tracks – and the set also features some rare singles from artists who never recorded a full album for TK. Titles include "All This Love That I'm Givin" by Gwen McCrae, "I Like My Birdie" by Leno Phillips, "Keep Her Happy" by Phillip Wright, "Never Had A Love So Good" by Charles Johnson, "Bessie" by JBs Wedge, "It's Your Sweet Love" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "The Way We Life" by Raw Soul Express, "Where Is The Love" by Betty Wright, "Listen To My Heartbeat" by Little Beaver, "Human (Ryuhei The Man express 45 edit)" by Brief Encounter, "What Am I Gonna Do (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Reid Inc, and "Be With Me (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Milton Wright. Mercury/Modern Harmonic, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The second great album by Kim Fowley's pet Runaways – the album with Lita Ford, Joan Jett and the rest of the gals cloaked in fog and straddling polls on the cover – making them look like a cross between Mott The Hoople and the headliners at that seedy club by the airport! Like the debut, the Queens Of Noise album is total ear candy – and this one is actually probably even a little bit more consistent – and might rock a little harder, too. It's not quite as notorious without the illicit wallop of the group's debut single "Cherry Bomb" – but that's probably the only reason it's not as well remembered. They were still underage at this point, too, so the front-to-back innuendo still resonates! Buy this and the debut album, then take your Donna's CDs back to the mall! Herbie Hancock and his mighty Headhunters group playing live in Omaha in 1975 – in a set that may well have been the hippest thing to happen in Nebraska that year! The performance follows strongly off of Herbie's famous albums with the combo – with that perfect mix of cosmic elements and heavy funk, both of which really get their chance to step out in the longer, more extended passages in the concert – which features excellent work from Bennie Maupin on reeds, Paul Jackson on bass, Bill Summers on percussion, DeWayne McKnight on guitar, and Mike Clarke on drums – plus plenty of sweet keyboards from Herbie himself. The set was recorded for FM radio at the time – and titles include "Bubbles", "Hang Up Your Hang Ups", "Heartbeat", "Shekere", "Watermelon Man", and "Steppin In It". CD
