✨✧ Chris & CoseyHeartbeat ... LP
Rough Trade/Conspiracy International (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The amazing first album from Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti – done after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle, and in a way that really sets the duo apart from the rest of the group! The music is dark, but also very tuneful – analogue electronics used much more clearly than on most TG material – with voices that are processed in ways that work perfectly next to the Casio keyboards and guitars. The whole thing's great – so different than all the others who tried to imitate this mode – and way more than just another cold wave footnote too. Titles include "Put Yourself In Los Angeles", "This Is Me", "Voodoo", "Moorby", "Radio Void", "Just Like You", "Bust Stop", "Heartbeat", and "Manic Melody". LP, Vinyl record album

Crushed ButlerUncrushed ... LP
Radio Heartbeat, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Stunning pre-punk work from late 60s UK – and a set that really lives up to the promise of its title! We'll admit that we were a bit suspicious at first, but the strength of the work here is incredible – nothing like the psyche, blues, or jazz-inspired rock coming out of the British scene of the time – and much more in a mode that resembles American work by a rare few groups like The Stooges, MC5, or The Seeds. But even more than those three, there's a definite "punkness" here that's really riveting – a speed of tunes that's extremely unusual for the period, and a raw, simple, guitar-based groove that would almost have us thinking Posh Boy LA, if the lyrics weren't so heavily accented English! Titles include "It's My Life", "Factory Grime", "Love Is All Around Me", "Love Fighter", and "High School Dropout". LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie McGregorBobby Bobylon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Heartbeat, 1979. Used ... $18.99
A key moment in the career of the legendary Freddie McGregor – easily one of the best-known voices in reggae in the post-Marley years! The set captures Freddie at his youthful best – coming off of time doing vocal group work, but really shining strongly as a lead singer on his own – getting this nicely subtle Studio One backing that are heavy on the roots vibe, which makes a nicely deep rhythmic contrast to the sweetly crackling vocals of McGregor! The set came out at the start of the 80s, but it's got an instant classic vibe that resonates almost more strongly with some of the most soulful Jamaican recordings at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Bandulo", "We Need More Love", "What Difference Does It Make", "Go Away Pretty Girl", "Tomorrow Is Like Today", "Bobby Bobylon", "Wine Of Violence", "Gonna Take Over Now", "Rastaman Camp", and "I Am A Revolutionist". Studio One/Heartbeat, 1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
Foundation is right, in more than one sense of the word! The Brentford Avenue stalwarts are showcased here on a nice double album compilation of classic and groundbreaking early ska and rocksteady tracks that would become the template for so much Jamaican music to follow. The team of Coxsone Dodd with Don Drummond, Lloyd Brevett, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Jerry Hinds, Dizzy Moore and Johnny Moore was unstoppable, it's hard to imagine where the reggae sound would be without this seminal music! 32 tracks in all, including "Dick Tracy", "Alley Pang", "Christine Keeler", "Fidel Castro", "Beardsman Ska", "Third Man Ska", "Simmer Down", "Exodus", "King Solomon", 'Eastern Standard Time", "I Should Have Known Better", "Hot Cargo", "Black Sunday", 'Ska La Parisienne", "Don D Lion", "Third Man Ska", "Nimrod", "Cleopatra", "Addis Ababa", "Silver Dollar", "Killer Diller", "Naked City" and "Ringo's Theme". Studio One/Heartbeat, 1960s/1970s. Used ... $16.99
An excellent collection showcasing the gentler gender's work for Coxsone Dodd! Women singers get overlooked often in collections of reggae, and certainly there are less recordings of female vocalists emanating from Jamaica, but this nice batch of tracks does a great job of working to correct that, featuring golden throated sisters and nothing but pure Studio One sweetness! 16 tracks in all, including "Don't Wory About Me" by Nana McLean, "Sleeping Trees" by Nina Soul, "FeelLike Jumping (original version)" by Marcia Griffiths, "No No No (original version)" by Dawn Penn, "Whisper To Me" by Cecille Campbell, "Try A Little Smile (extended mix)" by Doreen Schaffer, "Sea Puss & Bammie" by Little Audrey, "Buck Town Corner" by the Jay Tees, "Consider Me" by Jennifer Lara and "Secretly" by Hortense Ellis. Collins KidsRockin'est ... CD
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. Used ... $12.99
A killer collection from one of the coolest rockin acts of the 50s – a pair of younger kids, but who work together with a fire and frenzy that honestly beats most of the bigger rockabilly acts of the time! The Collins Kids are the stuff of legend – the kind of act that could hardly emerge today, especially on a major label – as it's almost as much of a surprise that these singles were recorded for Columbia Records during their big pop years, as it is how great the duo are together! Almost every track is upbeat, fast-riffing, and in that perfect spot between early rock and hillbilly – and the CD features 22 gems that include "Beetle Bug Bop", "Hoy Hoy", "Whistle Bait", "Hot Rod", "I'm In My Teens", "Hush Money", "The Rockaway Rock", "Hop Skip & Jump", "Mercy", "Party", "They're Still In Love", "Heartbeat", and "Go Away Don't Bother Me". Taana GardnerTaana Gardner ... LP
West End (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99
The only full length album cut by singer Taana Gardner – quite a surprise, given how much impact she had on the clubs with her 12" singles at the start of the 80s! The album's got Gardner as a much richer singer than you might expect – able to lay back on a mellow track as well as step out on a groover – always with that higher range of vocals that really made her a standout at the time, but in ways that are never gimmicky or poppy at all. And in fact, there's a lot more depth to the record than you'd guess from the dated exercise cover image – a classic soul approach that's also quite a surprise for the mostly disco West End label too. Tracks are all nice and long – and backings are by Sunship, with Bernard Wright on Fender Rhodes. This is a special 2LP version of the album – and titles include "Work That Body (orig 12" version)", "We Got To Work It Out", "When You Touch Me", "Paradise Express", and "Just Be A Friend" – plus "Heartbeat (12" version)" and "No Frills (party version)". RunawaysQueens Of Noise ... LP
Mercury, 1977. Very Good+ ... $33.99
The second great album by Kim Fowley's pet Runaways – the album with Lita Ford, Joan Jett and the rest of the gals cloaked in fog and straddling polls on the cover – making them look like a cross between Mott The Hoople and the headliners at that seedy club by the airport! Like the debut, the Queens Of Noise album is total ear candy – and this one is actually probably even a little bit more consistent – and might rock a little harder, too. It's not quite as notorious without the illicit wallop of the group's debut single "Cherry Bomb" – but that's probably the only reason it's not as well remembered. They were still underage at this point, too, so the front-to-back innuendo still resonates! Buy this and the debut album, then take your Donna's CDs back to the mall! Tracks include "Queens Of Noise", "Take It Or Leave It", "Midnight Music", "Born To Be Bad", "Neon Angels On The Road To Ruin", "I Love Playing With Fire", "California Paradise", "Hollywood", "Heartbeat", and "Johnny Guitar". Creed Taylor OrchestraShock – Music In Hi Fi ... LP
ABC, 1958. Very Good ... $16.99
Very cool work from Creed Taylor – material cut when he was still a bandleader, and hadn't yet evolved into the role of super-producer! The session's a long way from the CTI sound of the 70s – and instead has Creed playing some very spooky stuff – compositions by Kenyon Hopkins that have a horror sort of theme – dark little tunes that would be a perfect soundtrack for a haunted house! The core instrumentation is jazz-based, but augmented with some great other touches as well – and there's two female voices that scream, groan, and make other odd noises on the record from time to time. Titles include "The Long Walk", "Jungle Fever", "Heartbeat", "Haunted House", "In Bedlam", "Time Runs Out", and "The Secret". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest power pop albums ever recorded – a blistering batch of tight little rocking tunes that took pop music back to basics at the end of the 70s! The group have an almost Beatles-esque flair for the short catchy tune – but have also pumped up things nicely with a smoothly compressed 70s approach to production. There's an urgency to the work that seems to drive the whole thing with an uptight adolescent sense of horniness – a strange force that kicks most tunes into ultradrive by tapping into a virtually limitless source of energy! ✨✧ VariousMessage From TK – It's A Miami Modern Soul World ... CD
TK/Solid (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A soulful message from the 70s – served up here on a collection that focuses on a mighty nice side of the TK Records label from back in the day! TK hit big fame with its Miami spin on disco in the mid 70s, but the label also had a great ear for other sorts of soul music too – and here, the focus is on the warmer, more sophisticated modern soul tracks that marked their output away from the chart hits – work created in the south, but with a hip vibe that resonates strongly with the best work in New York, Philly, or other northern cities. The tracks are all hand-picked by DJ Ryuhei The Man – who also does his own edits of a few tracks – and the set also features some rare singles from artists who never recorded a full album for TK. Titles include "All This Love That I'm Givin" by Gwen McCrae, "I Like My Birdie" by Leno Phillips, "Keep Her Happy" by Phillip Wright, "Never Had A Love So Good" by Charles Johnson, "Bessie" by JBs Wedge, "It's Your Sweet Love" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "The Way We Life" by Raw Soul Express, "Where Is The Love" by Betty Wright, "Listen To My Heartbeat" by Little Beaver, "Human (Ryuhei The Man express 45 edit)" by Brief Encounter, "What Am I Gonna Do (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Reid Inc, and "Be With Me (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Milton Wright. Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Storming groovers from the UK scene of the mid 60s – all gems from that special moment when female British singers were often working with a heavy dose of soul! You'll recognize a few of the names here, and will discover a lot more along the way – and although there have been other collections of this nature over the years, we can say that this one is plenty darn fresh – in part because it's got a good number of tracks that appear here on CD for the first time ever! Instrumentation and production is fantastic – clearly inspired by Motown and other soulful American sources, then tipped towards the special talents of the UK singers on the set – and delivered with a socking soul style that's pretty darn great all the way through. 25 tracks in all, very detailed notes, and a superb set list that includes "32nd Love Affair" by Friday Brown, "I Like A Man" by The Caravelles, "My Street" by Millie, "So Little Time" by Diana Dors, "I Really Got Carried Away" by Madeline Bell, "No One Can Take Your Place" by Karol Keyes, "Eeny Meeny" by Ayshea, "The Music Attracts Me" by Clare Torry, "Small Town" by Kiki Dee, "Love Makes The World Go Round" by Sharon Tandy, "Wishin My Life Away" by Angelina, "Girls Like Boys" by Ethna Campbell, "Make Him Mine" by Susan Maughan, "Heartbeat" by Dusty Springfield, "Keep On Lovin Me" by The Kaye Sisters, and "The Thought Of You" by Jenny Wren. Let's Have A Party, indeed – as it's hard not to celebrate when a record sounds this great! The album's a boiling batch of Afro Funk numbers from the legendary Geraldo Pino – a key influence on the sound of Fela, and an artist with a sound that's got a bit more James Brown in his groove than some of his African contemporaries! Tracks are all super-tight and madly-grooving – hitting a fast-vamping, hard-riffing style that clearly draws energy from the JB sound of the late King years – but which also has its own unique flavor, thanks to some other-worldly electric piano on most of the numbers! Lyrics are in English, and as catchy as they are political – and titles include "Heavy, Heavy, Heavy", "Let Them Talk", "Africans Must Unite", "Shake Hands", "Power To The People", and "Let's Have A Party". The set brings together tracks from both The Dells' years on Chess and Mercury – taking them from the early doo wop-inspired soul of the 60s, through the baroque righteous styles of their years with Charles Stepney, into their still-incredible smoother sides from the late 70s! The set includes some of the group's best singles – some of which have oddly been missing from other collections – and the set list includes "I Touched A Dream", "Super Woman", "Our Love", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue", "Oh What A Day", "Open Up My Heart", "Always Together", "There Is", "My Pretending Days Are Over", and "I Miss You". Derrick Hodge has given us some wonderful music over the years – and he just seems to be getting better and better with each new release – a bassist who can make his instrument sing more than most we've heard in recent years – and a player who's also wonderfully in tune with his well-chosen sidemen! The group's got Hodge's fantastic work at the core which includes a bit of keyboards and occasional vocals – and the rest of the combo features Michale Aaberg on other keyboards, Jahari Stampley on organ and piano – plus Michael Mitchell and Justin Tyson on drums, often both playing together on drums, often on the same track – which really gives the music this special sort of rhythmic crackle. If you loved Hodge before, you'll love him even more – and if you've yet to discover his music, get ready for something really special.
