✨✧ Charles MingusLet My Children Hear Music (plus bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1973. Used ... $4.99
One of the last great records by Charles Mingus – a set of extremely compelling original compositions, played by a fresh group of younger players, plus a few older masters! The record's got a fire and sense of emotion that's missing from a number of other 70s Mingus sessions – and it's one of the few later albums we'd easily rank right up there with his late 50s and early 60s classics! Orchestrations were partially arranged and conducted with help from Sy Johnson – and soloists include James Moody and Bobby Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Snookie Young and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, and Roland Hanna on piano. Titles include "The Shoes Of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers", "Adagio Ma Non Troppo", "The Chill of Death", and "The I Of Hurricane Sue". CD features the bonus track "Taurus In The Arena Of Life". CD

Apple/Hear Music, 1971. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". 2CD version features some rare tracks and b-sides – including "Another Day", "Oh Woman Oh Why", "Little Woman Love", "Love For You", "Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Great Cock & Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Rode All Night", and "Sunshine Sometime (earliest mix)". ✨✧ Paul McCartney & WingsBand On The Run (2010 remastered 2CD/DVD set) ... CD
Hear Music, 1973. Used 2CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
One of the most brilliant moments of genius from Paul McCartney & Wings – and a set that has Paul working with the group in perfect album formation – able to craft enough songs that became hit singles, yet also fit the whole thing together in a superb sonic reality that made the whole thing even more wonderful as a full length record! The shift of moods, tones, and sounds are as varied as the choice of celebrities appearing with the group on the cover – and the interplay between Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine has really hit its stride – on titles that include one of our all-time Wings favorites, "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five" – plus "Band On The Run", "Bluebird", "Jet", "Mrs Vanderbilt", "Let Me Roll It", "Mamunia", "No Words", and "Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me)". 2CD plus DVD remastered edition in the Paul McCartney Archives Collection series features the original album on 1CD: "Band On The Run". "Bluebird", "Jet", Mrs Vanderbilt", "Let Me Roll It", "Mamunia", "No Words" and more. CD2 features rare and previously unreleased tracks from the 1974 One Hand Clapping documentary and more: "Helen Wheels", "Country Dreamer", "Bluebird (From One Hand Clapping)", "Jet From One Hand Clapping)", "Let Me Roll It (From One Hand Clapping)", "Band On The Run (From One Hand Clapping)", "Zoo Gang" and more. Also includes a DVD featuring the One Hand Clapping documentary itself: well over an hour long, with previously unseen footage! CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks ... CD
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
One of the key records that helped establish the genius of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at the end of the 60s – a session that was recorded on the Paris scene, where the early quartet were really starting to rub shoulders with, and influence a range of different European players – maybe no surprise, when you hear the brilliance of an album like this! There's a bit more bite here than on some of the more spacious AEC performances overseas – really bold energy that comes across on the first few minutes of the record, which have this wonderfully righteous quality – augmented by shouts and calls – on tunes that maybe also have a bit more structure than some other material from the period too. The session was recorded at the Saravah studios, and seems to echo some of the criss-crossing experiments of that famous spot – heard on the Ensemble's classic album with Brigitte Fontaine – and the set features a magnificent mish-mash of sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of saxes and reeds, and the whole group on percussion! The set features the tracks "Old Time Religion", "Dexterity", "Rock Out", and the side-long "A Brain For The Seine" – which covers the whole second half of the record, and really sets the tone for the group's experiments to come. Charlie Haden & Hampton HawesAs Long As There's Music ... CD
Verve, 1976. Used ... $9.99
Spare duets between Charlie Haden and Hampton Hawes – just bass and piano, with nothing else to hold them up – presented here as a wonderful illustration of the mature, sophisticated talents both artists had developed by the 70s! Hawes had really learned how to spin out a special kind of longform magic as the 60s turned into the new decade – and here, it's great to hear that approach without any drum in the group at all – as the tracks are long and wonderfully introspective, and offer up some beautifully moody work from Haden on bass. Titles include "As Long As There's Music", "This Is Called Love", "Hello Goodbye", "Irene", and "Rain Forest". CD

Dick HymanAutumn In New York – Dick Hyman Plays The Music Of Vernon Duke ... LP
Proscenium, 1952. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
Haunting solo piano from Dick Hyman – recorded in the early 50s with a really echoey quality that brings out a nice sort of darkness in the tunes! As you'd guess from the title, the tracks here are all famous numbers composed by Vernon Duke – and Hyman's renditions are nicely personal, with almost a relaxed, broken-down quality that's different than some of his more polished work of the time. It's great to hear Dick kicking back in a setting like this – taking the tunes with a sort of late nite intimacy, and delivering really nice versions of "April In Paris", "Now", "London In July", "Autumn In New York", "Cabin In The Sky", "Rio Cristal", "Taking A Chance On Love", and "The Love I Long For". Craig KupkaClouds – New Music For Relaxation ... CD
Folkways, 1981. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
One of the most meditative albums ever recorded for the Folkways label – two side-long tracks from composer Craig Kupka, each of which has a dream-like, very hypnotic quality! It's a bit hard to say what exactly is going on here in the instrumentation – we definitely hear vibes, or maybe celeste, plus light guitar, percussion, and a touch of piano – but everything has almost a pillowy sort of blend – so that the instrumentation is abstracted from its roots into something completely different – a really thoughtful sonic experience, and one that definitely evokes the "Clouds" in both of its two numbered titles! A wonderful sound library album – one that works with oceanic themes, and has a really cool underwater sort of vibe – not unlike some of the great marine soundtracks penned by Sven Libaek and Francois DeRoubaix back in the 70s! The project's led by Chris Stullenberg, who's also got a bit of an ear for 80s instrumentation – which you'll hear as the keyboards and rhythms shift a bit from track to track – but never in the cold side of the 80s, and instead always with a sense of warmth and organic progression that really makes the whole thing hold together in a really great way! Tatsuro YamashitaAdd Some Music To Your Day ... LP
Columbia/Wild Honey (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $41.99 49.99
Very early work from Tatsuro Yamashita – an artist most folks know for his groundbreaking soul music in the second half of the 70s in Japan – but one who starts out here in much more of a rock basis overall, with an especially strong influence on most of the tracks from legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson! The music is a real surprise, but also shows that Yamashita was also an excellent pop craftsman at the core – with qualities that really resonate strongly with some of Wilson's best, mixed with a growing understanding of the key elements that were changing up music in the 70s – a progression that you'll almost hear over the course of the album! Most instrumentation is by a small quartet lineup that features Tatsuro on drums and acoustic guitar, next to electric guitar, bass, and keyboards – plus harmony vocals from all members of the group. Titles include "Your Summer Cream", "Car Crazy Cutie", "Help Me Rhonda", "Wendy", "Don't Worry Baby", "Semi Detached Suburban Mr James", "Crazy Words Crazy Tune", and "Love's Made A Fool Of You". Buda (France), Late 60s/Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Stunning stuff from the early 70s – one of the richest moments in the history of Ethiopian popular music! Haile Sellassie's reign was nearing its end, and the country was in the grip of a new renaissance of modernist ideas. To the rest of us, this means that the music scene was absorbing and mixing in a lot of strong influences from around the globe – and on this CD you'll hear funky rhythms, reggae bits, soulful vocals, and lots of other influences, all filtered through a strange sensibility that makes the results come out sounding amazingly otherworldly! There's 17 cuts on this first volume, and work is performed by Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulugen Mellesse, Getachew Kassa, Teshome Meteku, and Seyfu Yohannes. Also includes a few great instrumentals by lost artists! CD

Nonesuch, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A legendary set of recordings – a collection whose title may have aged a bit with the passage of time, but whose contents continue to sound as powerful today as when they were first captured by musicologist David Lewiston in the 70s! The album focuses on strands of music with deeper African roots – music that might not be the sort you'd usually expect to hear from Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador – as the sounds are spare and rootsy, and come across much more like ethnographic recordings from various West African regions in years past. Most numbers feature earthy percussion, vocals (often chanted), and some additional instrumentation – with a very timeless vibe, and a quality that's surprisingly consistent, especially given that the work was recorded in three different nations. Titles include "Capoeira", "Los Cholitos", "Salome", "Arullo San Antonio", "Candomble", "Currulao Cantado", and "Voy A Bando". LP, Vinyl record album

El (UK), 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 34.99
A really unique collection – and one with a pretty unusual approach – as the set looks at music that helped inspire the more spiritual sounds of the late 60s – by bringing together music from a whole host of different genres, including some that you might not expect! Over the course of the 3CDs in the package, you'll hear modern classical, Indian music, avant jazz, spoken word, and other styles – all pulled from important records of the postwar years, coming together here to almost offer up an audio portrait of some of the intellectual currents that were helping to loosen things up before the really free years to come later on in the 60s. As with other El Records collections, the notes help illuminate some of the musical choices – an arran of work from Morton Feldman, Jimmy Giuffre, Daphne Oram, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Boulez, Maurice Ravel, Eric Dolphy, Edgard Varese, Lili Boulaner, Satyajit Ray, Edith Sitwell, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, and many others! Soundway (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.99
A great example of the sort of ear-opening compilation we love to find – a way of coming across music that we'd never hear otherwise, and which brings us plenty of listening pleasure while also really expanding our understanding of a culture! The tracks here are from a new moment of freedom on the Argentine scene, and a time when a blockage of British goods had been lifted – which is crucial, as there's clearly a lot of inspiration from the hippest UK electronic acts moving through this music! The sounds here aren't the modern tango or jazz you might associate with decades of Argentine culture – but they're also not pop, either – as most of the music has a relatively lean approach to the electronic rhythms and instrumentation used in the lineup – echoes of the deeper undergrounds of the post-punk years, and maybe some of the German new wave too – but often with more warmth than you'd find in the electronic world that's come to be known as "cold wave". We're not sure we've heard any of these cuts before, and there's a surprisingly unified vibe throughout – even when lyrics switch from English to Spanish, or the technology of the instrumentation changes slightly. A massive triple-length package – with titles that include "Dance To Dance" by Bad Girls, "Mediterranee Club" by Divina Gloria, "Como Son Los Retratos (Harari edit)" by Mike Ribas, "I Wanna Make You Mine" by Delight, "De Mama Candombe" by Jorge Lopez Ruiz, "A Ver A Ver (Ric Piccolo edit)'b y Donald, "Sexy Films" by Carla Rab, "Aire De Tropicos" by Los Musicos Del Centro, and "Running Away From You" by Ultimate Warriors. Every time we hear a new project from the team of Warren Hampshire & Greg Foat, we feel like they've raised the bar a little bit, and this homage to sound library jazz might be their best yet! Creative as they are, Hampshire & Foat don't merely cover or adapt the compositions of any legendary 60s or 70s sound library publishers, instead putting together their own moody original material that's inspired by it. RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1969/1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A Henry Mancini double header – two albums back to back! First up is Theme From Z – cool Mancini work from the start of the 70s – a record that offers a nice step forward from his scoring styles of the 60s, with a slightly orchestral feel as well! The arrangements here are full, but still have a nice sort of focus – and include solos by players like Mancini on piano, Jimmy Rowles on electric calliope, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto, and Art Smith on recorder. Some of the best tracks have a groovy feel that really fits the date of the record, while others have a more traditional soundtrack approach – and tunes include "Theme From Z", "Airport Love Theme", "Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head", "A Man A Horse A Gun", "Patton Theme", and Jobim's "Love Theme From The Adventurers". Debut has Henry Mancini making his debut as a conductor of the Philadelphia Pops – a larger orchestra than you'll usually hear on most Manini albums, which allows Hank to really open up in some more sophisticated modes! The songs are mostly more serious Mancini compositions – with solos on flute, oboe, violin, harpsichord, and trumpet – and titles include "Beaver Valley 37", "Dream Of A Lifetime", "Drummer's Delight", "Speedy Gonzalez", and "Strings On Fire". A great collection of Thelonious Monk's early pre-LP recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene! The work is notable also for the fact that Monk's playing sometimes in larger group settings – not just trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet certainly has a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s – as you'll hear on tracks that include work from players like Sahib Shihab and Lou Donaldson on alto, Milt Jackson on vibes, and Idrees Suliman and Kenny Dorham on trumpets – depending on the volumes. Art Blakey is on drums throughout – and titles on this first volume include "Round Midnight", "In Walked Bud", "Thelonious", "Epistrophy", "Misterioso", "Well You Needn't", and "Off Minor". CD

Atco, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Roxy Music's third album, and a record that really shows that the group have found a tremendous voice of their own – quite a thing to do, given the heady brew of records that were coming out in the year of 1973! There's a style here that's familiar enough to draw the listener in – maybe some echoes of territory you might hear in work from David Bowie, Lou Reed, John Cale, or the now-solo Brian Eno – but once inside, you find yourself in a completely different world – a mad blend of guitars and strings, saxophones and electronics, all used in these ways that are tuneful enough to be catchy, but also deeply unsettling too – as are the lead vocals of Bryan Ferry, who comes across like some older European singer who's been let out of the madhouse for the sessions. This isn't a singles-heavy record, but instead an album-length journey that never gets old, even as the years move on – and which is as powerful to new ears discovering the record for the first time as to longtime fans. Odion Livingstone (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint who cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the 80s! The title here uses the word "disco", but these cuts have none of the strings and polish of the sounds you'd hear at Studio 54 – as most numbers here are stripped-down and raw, really more in a clubbier take on the more famous Nigerian funk of a few years before! However, there's also a quality here that could easily cross over to the hipper clubs on the New York underground – as most of these guys are also using the same sort of small combo funk instrumentation of the best of the indie post-disco scene – which means that some tracks resonate with the work of labels like P&P, and others echo some of the more global currents that were showing up in New York funk during the period! Most lyrics are in English, which further gives these tracks a universal appeal – and titles include "Perfect Disco Machine" and "Disco Connection" by Bindinga, "Aimiuugwia" and "Advice" by Christy Ogbah, "Xmas Eve" by Johnny O Bazz, "Look At Me" and "Shake You Body" by Mike Umoh, "You Do Good You Do For Yourself" by Godfrey Odili, "On My Mind" by Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah, and "Ariro" by Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Atlantic/Warner (UK), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Important 70s work from Don Cherry – one of the first albums to bring his overseas experiments to a larger US audience! The set builds nicely off of styles that Don forged earlier in France and Scandinavia – a freer style of music than his work with Ornette Coleman, and a richly organic groove that builds up strongly from the bottom, often with elements of world music settled in alongside the jazz – but there's also some funkier moments here too, a bit like the Brown Rice album, but looser overall! The groups on most numbers are relatively large and spiritual – almost like Alice Coltrane at times, but a bit more electric and funky at others – and players include Collin Walcott on sitar, Michael Brecker on saxes, Cliff Carter on keyboards, Lenny White and Tony Williams on drums, Lois Colin on harp, and Raphael Cruz on percussion. Cherry himself plays conch shells, bells, and flute in addition to his usual trumpet – and he even sings a bit on a few numbers, in a soulful, scatting sort of groove. Narada Michael Walden produced, and the whole set's got a very righteous feel – with tracks that include "Universal Mother", "Buddah's Blues", "Eagle Eye", "Mahakali", "Karmapa Chenno", "Surrender Rose", and "Journey Of Milarepa". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ...
Music for lovers – and some languid lovers at that – thanks to some perfect mellow moods set by Jackie Gleason! The set's one of Jackie's undisputed classics for Capitol Records in the 50s – perfect sounds to woo a winsome lass, made slightly sexier by some great trumpet solos by Bobby Hackett – a player whose horn always seemed plenty at home amidst the larger arrangements provided by Gleason. And while Jackie's performances on TV were always pretty dynamic and explosive, his sound on record is something else entirely – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Alone Together", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Some Day", "Body & Soul", "My Love For Carmen", and "Love Is Here To Stay". Mercury, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Quincy Jones meets Henry Mancini – and the result is an album that's as groovy as it is jazzy – every bit as wonderful as you might expect, and with a few surprising touches as well! Given that Mancini's tunes are already pretty darn great on their own – and plenty jazzy too – it's amazing to hear Quincy transform them for the record, bringing in some of the styles that would show up even more strongly in his own 60s soundtrack work – clever instrumental twists, occasional electric moments, and a growing sensitivity we never would have expected in his music a decade before. There's loads of lovely reeds – courtesy of Jerome Richardson, Seldon Powell, Zoot Sims, and Roland Kirk – and other players include Gary Burton on vibes, Mundell Lowe on guitar, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, and Phil Krauss on percussion. Titles include "Baby Elephant Walk", "Charade", "Dreamsville", "Bird Brain", "Days Of Wine And Roses", "Mr Lucky", "Pink Panther", "Moon River", "Peter Gunn", and "Odd Ball". LP, Vinyl record album

Light In The Attic, 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard early sounds from the young Lou Reed – early recordings of material that helped cement his fame in the Velvet Underground – uncovered after being lost for almost 50 years! The tracks here are early demos of both songs that the Velvets would famously soon record, and other material that they didn't – done by Lou with help from John Cale on a number of the tracks, and already in a surprisingly dark sort of style – despite the fact that the instrumentation is mostly just a single guitar alongside the vocals! With that approach, there's maybe a slight nod to the Greenwich Village scene in terms of the presentation – and served up that way, you can hear just how strongly the young Reed is already shaking up the scene in New York – almost as if he's using the modes of the folkies as ammunition to mow them all down. The package features never-heard takes of "Heroin", "I'm Waiting For The Man", and "Pale Blue Eyes" – plus "Too Late", "Buttercup Song", "Buzz Buzz Buzz", "Stockpile", "Men Of Good Fortune", and even "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams". Verve, Late 1960s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record that's a stunning departure for reedman Tony Scott – a set that's completely different than his more straight ahead jazz on the American scene in the 50s! The set is an early step on a spiritual journey that Scott would continue overseas in years to come – an initial moment of opening up his familiar jazz clarinet to reed styles from other scenes – in this case a very Japanese-based one, as the trio here features work from Shinichi Yuize on koto and Hozan Yamamoto on shakuhachi – a very different group than Scott would have blown with in the previous decade! The album is less jazz-based than some of Tony's later projects – and also less jazz than some of Yamamoto's records to come – but there's definitely a sense of improvisation, and the whole thing is really a delight in getting to hear a musician open up whole new aspects of his instrument. Titles include "To Drift Like Clouds", "The Murmuring Sound Of The Mountain Stream", "Is All Not One", "Satori", "Sanzen", and "After The Snow The Fragrance". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing discovery in music – rare work from an artist who's already pretty darn rare to American ears – even though he recorded some of these spacey gems in Virginia during the mid 70s! Sensation's Fix is the brainchild of musician/electronician Franco Falsini – an Italian artist with strong influence from, and experience with, the early German prog scene – but one who also stretches out here in ways that are a lot more personal and poetic! The music is heavy on keyboards and electronics – often in a minimally-produced way, save for studio effects that really help flesh out the sound without commercializing it – and Franco has a thoughtful approach that's never too jamming, even though mostly instrumental – almost that space as prog was turning towards soundtrack ends – especially in German and France. Yet the feel is also quite different than that, too – as you'll hear on this double-length set of rare mixes, alternate takes and unreased tracks from the records that yielded the short output of Sensation's Fix in the mid 70s. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of music from Cuba – not the jazzy descarga styles that led to salsa, nor the more romantic singers that are maybe some of the nation's best-known artists – but instead a wealth of work that mixes raw percussion and vocals to support the spiritual practice of santeria! The music here represents a shifting spiritual culture that was taking place in the Caribbean during the 20th Century – as African and Spanish ideas were coming into play with each other – forming new modes of understanding, which also led to new musical practices as well! Many of these recordings were done at the same time that larger, more polished orchestras were dominating the Cuban scene – but they represent rootsier, rawer recordings that often just have percussion and vocals as the dominant force – sometimes quite a surprise when you might hear a bigger star as part of the lineup. As with every collection on the Fremeaux label, the package offers up a lot of music for the price, and a very detailed set of notes in both French and English – with a total of 66 tracks in all – including work by Chano Pozo, Miguelito Valdez, Celina Y Reutilio, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Sabu, Arsenio Rodriguez, Julio Gutierez, and others – as well as a set of field recordings done on acetate in 1940! A long-overdue collection of work from the legendary Jack Arel – one of the lesser-known sound library composers of the late 60s and early 70s – but a true giant in his funky field, as you'll hear by the great music on this set! Arel is French, but he often wrote for British sources – including the Prisoner TV show – so his music has a great blend of Parisian pop modes and chunkier London beats – a style that almost mixes together some of the funkier jazz sensibilities of the sound library generation with the tighter, more romping rhythms that were usually penned for TV and commercial use. The first half of this set features 25 originals by Arel – some in collaboration with Pierre Dutor or Jean-Claude Petit – and often done with trippier touches that include fuzzy guitar or funky flute! The second half features remixes of the originals – tunes that are often a bit longer, and almost restructured as whole new songs. Originals include "Shore Of Sumatra", "Sideral Rhythmic", "De Paris A Liverpool", "Jungle Soul", "Game Trap", "Picture Of Summer", "Train Bleu", "Strange Galaxy", and "Sundown". Remixes include "Drugstore Party" remixed by Le Tone, "Jungle Soul" remixed by Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra, "The Night Squad" by Danny Wild & Goldfinger, "Loco Robo" by Luke Vibert, "Chicago Girl" remixed by Barth, "Electric Railman" remixed Mowo, and "Crystal Abyss" by Telepopmusik. Really wonderful sounds from an overlooked sound library genius – and an artist who's also a great one to turn to if you want to hear the groovier side of the spectrum too! Rene Costy recorded these tracks on the 70s scene in Belgium – which is why he's probably not as well-exposed as sound library creators from the UK, France, and Italy – but that obscurity is also what makes some of these tracks so great – as the groovier numbers come across with a freshly bubbling feel that's very positive, and has the warmth of some of our favorite French soundtrack tunes from the 70s – and the darker tracks have an unusually sharp approach, but somehow while still sounding tuneful! Keyboards are the dominant instrument – and LP one features "grooves", which make up the biggest part of the collection – followed by a shorter array of darker tracks on the "scapes" of LP two. The Jimmy Giuffre trio join the quartet on most of side one – adding in Jimmy's snakey clarinet and Jim Hall's fluid guitar lines for a really fresh take on the MJQ groove. The remainder of the album brings in the Beaux Arts String Quartet – who shade in the mix of vibes and piano with these dark strains that are really beautiful – and bring even more drama than usual to the music. Some numbers sound like groovy little tunes lifted from Italian soundtracks, and others are a bit more uptempo. Yet these tracks are all even more obscure, and all come from African sources that never got any exposure over here back in the day – records from Zambia, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe – all brought together in a massive collection that's filled with heavy guitar work, and a fair bit of monstrous basslines too – which gives some of these tracks a slightly funky current at the bottom, even while the guitars and vocals are tripping out up top! The collection's a great complement to some of the Zamrock reissues from Now Again in recent years – and titles include "The Bad Will Die" by Keith Mlevhu, "Can't You Hear Me" by Paul Ngozi, "Black Power" by Peace, "Mad Man" by Born Free, "Breakthrough" by Funkees, "Few Bena Zambia" by Revolutions, "Come Home" by Wells Fargo, "Amanaz" by Amanaz, "Don't Take Me For A Ride" by Founders, "Like A Chicken" by Witch, and "Making Life Out Of Music" by Eye Q. Also includes the reworked "No Time (Pilooski edit)" by Witch. CD

Loma/Future Days, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Major labels didn't always get soul music as well as the indies back in the 60s – but there's one exception to that myth, the mighty Loma Records label from Warner Brothers! The company had a near-perfect run during its few years in business – killer soul singles that are every bit as prized by collectors as some of the more obscure records on tiny labels from the time – and which are handled with a quality level that's never too commercial, never as slick as you'd expect from a bigger company that was also handling easy listening and pop during the same period. Instead, the Loma legacy is a mighty deep run of greatness – as you'll hear on this stunning third volume in the series – with titles that include "The Shadow Of Your Love" by Bobby Freeman, "I Paid For The Party" by The Enchanters, "Can't Win" by The Invicibles, "Better Think Of What You're Losing" by Tommy Starr, "If This Ain't Love" by The Realistics, "Don't Come A Knockin" by Mary Lee Whitney, "Sad Sad Feeling (part 1)" by The Autographs, and "I Wanna Love You So Bad" by Bobby Reed. Dreamy sounds in many styles – and a collection that's way more than you might guess from the title! The tunes are by artists who are maybe more familiar than you'd guess from any "celestial" reference – not folks from the new age underground, but instead a mix of jazz, soul, rock, and acoustic artists who come together here in a wonderfully well-chosen batch of cuts that reminds us that in the right hands, the art of the compilation is still alive and well! These are definitely tracks that we'd never have thought to put together ourselves, and they work alongside each other in a really great way – creating a laidback musical journey with some really surprising stops along the way – on tracks that include "Balsam" by Roedelius, "I've Got A Secret" by Fred Neil, "Poison" by Bert Jansch, "Jennie Lee" by Shuggie Otis, "Holy Are You" by The Electric Prunes, "Sais" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Come Ye" by Nina Simone, "I Hear You Callin" by Bill Fay, "It's Taking So Long" by Kathy Smith, "With Tomorrow" by Gene Clark, "Eden's Island" by Eden Ahbez, "Jesus Is A Dying Bedmaker" by John Fahey, "May I" by Kevin Ayres, and "Broken Heart" by Alexander Skip Spence. Kent (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not really blues, but not really soul either – a wonderful mix of modes that's come to be known as the popcorn sound of the early 60s! The style's hardly "pop" at all – and instead, these tunes are plenty gritty throughout – more like numbers you'd hear blasting out of a backroom jukebox, or on the decks of some deep soul DJ dedicated to serving up a rough-edged groove! Lots of these numbers might be called post-R&B – as they still have some of the styles of the 50s, mixed with the tighter punch of the newborn soul sound – and the set's a wonderful illustration of this magical moment in music, finally getting some credit after all these years. CD features loads of tracks we'd never heard before – and titles include "Don't Knock It" by Sinner Strong, "You Lied" by Marva Josie, "Mr Lonely" by Freddie North, "When You See Me Hurt" by Carl Lester & The Show Stoppers, "Well I Done Got Over It" by Bobby Mitchell, "I'm Comin Home" by Bobby John, "I Ain't Talkin" by Pat Hunt, "This Little Lester" by James Wayne, "Why Oh Why" by Austin Taylor, "Rockin Bed" by Valerie Carr, and "I'm Hurted" by Mamie Perry. One of the weirdest Don Cherry albums you'll ever hope to hear – and that's saying a lot, given the range of incredible albums the man has given us over the years! The music here was recorded for a French film based on the music, poetry, and "antics" of Cherry – done in the Saravah Records studios in 1969, around the same time as Cherry's albums for the BYG/Actuel label on the Paris scene – but with a much looser, more freewheeling vibe overall! The first side of the record features music done with Karl Berger – in a mix of piano, percussion, wood flutes, electronics, and pocket trumpet – shifting many times in terms of tone and spirit, with Cherry at his most organic. Side two features most of the same music, but with Anthony Braxton joining in – as well as poetry at some parts – in the complete edit that was used in the film. A fantastic document in so many ways – of the musicians, of post-68 Paris, and even of European avant cinema! LP, Vinyl record album

A really fantastic record, and one that's even better than you might expect – which is saying a lot, as we always have high expectations for any music from both saxophonist Eric Alexander and keyboardist Mike LeDonne! The album's very different than most other sessions the artists have recorded – first in that Mike's playing piano throughout, with a sensitivity that's very different than his more familiar sounds on Hammond organ – and second, in that the album's just a set of duets, which is an especially fresh way to hear Alexander – who's grown and changed so much as a musician in recent years. The open quality of the record is fantastic, and both players are in top form – and LeDonne also gives us a few solo numbers that are pretty fantastic too. There's strong use of harp on the albums at times, echoing a bit of Alice Coltrane – but the group definitely take off in all their own directions too, especially as they shift the focus on key instruments from track to track – in a lineup that includes flute, alto, oboe, tenor, bass clarinet, and baritone – next to light strings, piano, percussion, and bass. All the music was composed by Ozzy Moysey, and a few tracks feature a vocal group to help lift up the spirits of the tunes – equally cosmic and righteous, and a great addition to the sound of the set. A really fantastic record, and one that's way more than a typical standards set – an album that's more "lost" than anything else – as it represents some very early material from tenorist Gato Barbieri, right at a point when his music was really taking off! The set was recorded in Rome in 1968, and marks a moment when Gato was stepping back inside from some outside experiments in more avant territory – but still firmly embracing all the lessons learned with that work, which comes through in both his tone and sense of timing! There's a majesty here that's undeniable – and the record will definitely serve to remind anyone that Barbieri is one of the great reed players of his generation when you get to hear him on a record like this – a set that puts him right up there with Archie Shepp or Pharoah Sanders in terms of his expressiveness! ABC/BGO (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.99
Four fantastic albums from Bobby Bland – all brought together in a single package for the first time! First up is Come Fly With Me – great work from Bobby Blue Bland – one of the few artists to rise up at the end of the 50s, and still find a way to chart their own path forward in soul with fresh material like this! Bobby's voice is still incredible here, and he works with production from Al Bell and Monk Higgins, the latter of whom arranged – in this cool style that's a bit like some of the territory that Tyrone Davis was taking on at Columbia Records during the second half of the 70s – fuller arrangements that bring some sophisticated soul touches to the music, but in ways that never lose the core of Bobby's genius! Titles include "Lady Lonely", "Night Games", "You Can Count On Me", "Love To See You Smile", "Come Fly With Me", and "To Be Friends". The next album is I Feel Good I Feel Fine – and Bobby Bland sounds pretty good too – thanks to arrangements from the great Monk Higgins, who does a perfect job of mixing Bland's trademark vocals with some sweet late 70s arrangements! The sound is upbeat, but never in a cliched disco mode – more in the territory that you'd hear Johnnie Taylor using over at Columbia Records – maybe a good comparison, given the Memphis roots that both artists shared – as both also evolved a lot to shift their sound with the changing modes of the time. And as with Johnnie, Bobby never loses the core that makes him great – as you'll hear on titles that include "Tit For Tat", "Soon As The Weather Breaks", "In His Eyes", "Someone To Belong To", "I Feel Good I Feel Fine", and "Little Mama". Sweet Vibrations is a real gem from the start of the 80s – arranged by Monk Higgins, who co-produced the set with Al Bell – a duo who'd already given Bobby some great records before, but who really knock it out of the park with this one. There's an extra-special quality going on here – maybe a slight reintroduction of blues roots, but still with a very contemporary spirit – set up to superb backings throughout. Titles include "Soul With A Flavor", "Hollywood Woman", "You'd Be A Millionaire", "Sweet Vibrator", "Special Kind Of Fool", and "A Real Woman Is What It Takes". Try Me I'm Real is record with a title that certainly fits the bill – as the amazing voice of Bobby Bland is as real here as it ever was, and blended with superbly soulful backings that take the singer's sound forward for a whole new generation! Some of Bobby's contemporaries were content to just stick in a straight blues mode – but Bland really grew and developed a lot as an artist, thanks in part to Monk Higgins and Al Bell – who are both at the production helm of the record, and balance the bluesy roots of Bobby with some richer soul backings that really knock the whole thing out of the park! We love Bobby Blue Bland during his early Duke Records years – but we love him equally as much for music like this, on titles that include "But I Do", "What A Difference A Day Makes", "Givin Up The Streets For Love", "A Song For You My Son", "Just You Just Me", and "Love Is Where It's At". Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Segun BucknorWho Say I Tire ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 24.99
Heavy Nigerian funk from the great Segun Bucknor – an artist who was working during the same Afro Funk revolution as Fela Kuti & Africa 70, but one who never fully got the exposure he deserved on a global level! By the time of these cuts, Segun had already been working hard in a variety of different groups – and he emerges at the start of the 70s with a bold new vision in music – one that draws on the same American soul and funk inspirations that you'll hear on the records of Geraldo Pino, but which also has some moodier elements at times too – a heady current that's clearly inspired by the psych generation, and taken to some more message-oriented lyrics at times. The blend is wonderful, especially when most cuts have these deeply funky rhythms at the bottom – and this 2CD package is a fantastic introduction to his music, with 16 long cuts that include "Sorrow Sorrow Sorrow", "Poor Man No Get Brother", "Dye Dye", "Only In My Sleep", "Adanri Sogbasogba", "Baby Get Your Thing", "Love And Affection", "Son Of January 15th", "La La La", "Gbmojo", "Ayinde Ogo", "Who Say I Tire", "You Killing Me", "Adebo", and "That's The Time". By All MeansBeyond A Dream ... CD
Island, 1989. Used ... $6.99
By All Means kick off this set with a cover of Marvin Gaye's classic "Let's Get It On" – but they also announce their special sound right from the very first note too – a laidback groove that's in that perfect late 80s mellow soul mode, with just a hint of new jack elements in some of the gentle rhythms! There's a nice sense of class to the whole set – slow-stepping sounds that really bring back a time when soul music was awash in more sophisticated modes – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Early Fall", "Stay With Me Tonight", "Point Of View", "I'd Rather Be Lonely", "Do You Remember", "The More You Give The More You Get", and their cover of "Let's Get It On". ✨✧ Donald ByrdJazz In Paris – Parisian Thoroughfare ... CD
Universal (France), 1958. Used ... $8.99
The second volume of work that Donald Byrd recorded live at the Olympia in Paris in 1958 – even harder-hitting in tone than the first! The set features Byrd playing some tight hardbop lines – working in a cool group that also features Bobby Jaspar on tenor, Walter Davis Jr on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – all players who come together with the sound and style of some of those great late 50s Prestige blowing sessions! The difference, though, is that Byrd is the clear leader here – working his trumpet solos with techniques that really show him growing as an artist on this Paris trip – forging a tight vision into the music that makes it way more than just a loose bop exercise on stage. You'll hear that especially on "52nd Street Theme", but the whole set's pretty darn great – and tracks include "At This Time", "Formidable", "Two Bass Hit", "Parisian Thoroughfare", and "Stardust". Donald ByrdNew Perspective ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good ... $69.99
A really landmark album in soulful jazz for the 60s – a set that takes the already-great energy of the young trumpeter Donald Byrd, and mixes it with some voices borrowed from gospel music bur turned towards modern jazz – all in a style that's very similar to some of the Max Roach experiments from the time! The core group is really great – with tenor from Hank Mobley, guitar from Kenny Burrell, and piano from Herbie Hancock – plus vibes from the obscure Donald Best, an instrument that you don't always hear on Donald Byrd's albums! Added to this group are voices directed by Coleridge Perkinson, a very hip cat who takes the voices far away from cliched modes of earlier years – and into some very righteous territory that makes the record one of Donald Byrd's first really powerful statements as a leader. Duke Pearson handled the arrangements, and the sound is beautiful and spiritual, with a sound that mixes Blue Note hardbop with a style that would later show up on labels like Strata East, or in the experiments of Max Roach and Billy Harper. The tracks are long and moody, and the vocal group never gets in the way, but instead backs Byrd in a way that lets him hit new heights, and which gives him a stronger sense of voice. Titles include the classic "Christo Redentor", plus "Chant", "The Black Disciple", and "Elijah". LP, Vinyl record album

Calibro 35Decade ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
Calibro 35 have grown a heck of a lot in the last ten years – from a group who already had a strong ear for vintage soundtrack and sound library funk – to one who've definitely brought a lot of their own ideas to the music too! The sound here is razor sharp and right on the money – excellent small combo funk – awash in riffing guitars, romping rhythms, and sweet keyboard lines on a variety of instruments – with occasional tenor or flute to round things out for good measure! The horns aren't as crucial here as with other funk groups – as these guys aim more for the vibe you'd hear from a more sophisticated ensemble, but with a lean style of presentation – and the tunes are all really great – with enough depth to feel classic, but lots of fresh flavors of their own. Titles include "Superstudio", "Faster Faster", "Ambienti", "Polymeri", "Modo", "Travelers", and "Archizoom". CD

Ray CharlesCountry & Western Meets Rhythm & Blues ... LP
ABC/Tangerine, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
The cover's a bit hokey, but the music is rock-solid throughout – and really lives up to that promise of music modes mixing that's hinted at in the title! The production is wonderful – large and lofty, but with a space in the middle right for Ray's voice and piano – almost a more soulful take on territory that Chet Atkins was pioneering over at RCA, but superbly recorded out west by a young Bones Howe – who does a great job of balancing all the charms that make Charles so special at this point in his career! The Jack Halloran Singers work on a number of tracks, maybe adding in more countrypolitan touches than when Ray sings with the Raelettes – who are also on two tracks here – and titles include "Light Out Of Darkness", "Together Again", "I Like To Hear It Sometime", "Next Door To The Blues", "Watch It Baby", "All Night Long", and "Don't Let Her Know". Marlow (Canada), 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 24.99
A nice little record that lives up to the name of the group – a record that's maybe jazz at the core, but served up in very cinematic ways – very much the spirit of the dark, moody image pictured on the cover! This isn't chase, crime, or cop music – but instead maybe the sounds you'd hear on the journey home after the battle – slow funk in the rhythms, peppered with great work on vibes, piano, and mellotron from Pierre Chretien – who also wrote, arranged, and produced the whole record too! Most tunes have a nice light melody over heavier drums and percussion on the bottom – never too over the top, but well-paced in a way that really makes this one stand out from the pack. Ornette ColemanOrnette At 12/Crisis/Man On The Moon – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Late 60s. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
A collection of Ornette Coleman albums from the end of the 60s – work from two key albums, plus some interesting bonus material too! First up is the album Ornette At 12 – a set that features two generations of Ornette Coleman – making incredible music here together! The album's a freewheeling late 60s outing from the senior Ornette – who plays alto, violin, and trumpet here – working with his young son Ornette D Coleman on drums, just 12 years old at the time – but a surprisingly strong free jazz player overall! Heavyweight help comes from Dewey Redman on tenor – really tremendous here, with energy that's up there with Albert Ayler or Archie Shepp at their 60s best – plus Charlie Haden on bass, really coming strongly back into the music at this point in his career. The album's quite free overall – similar to some of Coleman's Blue Note work of the period – and titles include "COD", "Rainbows", "New York", and "Bells and Chimes". Next is Crisis – a record that bursts out with a sound that definitely lives up to its striking title – as Ornette Coleman explores the new frontiers of experimental jazz with one of his great groups from the end of the 60s! The album's got the intensity of the best ESP sessions of the period, but also shows the richer sonic elements that Coleman can bring to the proceedings – that way of mixing sharp edges with surprising currents – delivered by an all-star group that features Ornette on alto and violin, Don Cherry on trumpet and flute, Dewey Redman on tenor and clarinet, Charlie Haden on bass, and the young Ornette D Coleman on drums. It's especially amazing to hear Haden and Cherry take on such different roles than in the Ornette material of the early 60s – and also realize a wider vision for the music, on tunes that include a great version of Haden's "Song For Che", plus "Broken Shadows", "Trouble In The East", and "Space Jungle". The last two tracks are maybe the most unusual – originally issued only as a promo 7" single by Impulse Records, with the tunes "Man On The Moon" and "Growing Up" – recorded with a group that features Cherry on trumpet, Redman on tenor, Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – plus electronics from Emmanuel Ghent on one track! Chris Connelly & Monica QueenBirthday Poems ... CD
Jnana, 2021. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
A stunning project from the great Chris Connelly – and a set that shows just how much his music has evolved over the years! Connelly has roots and inspirations that run very deep – deeper than some might expect from his bigger-name work – and here, he delivers a set of songs that trace relationships between Scottish cultural figures Stella Cartwright, George Mackay Brown, and Stanley Roger Green – but in a way that has all the songs standing alone nicely as well! The set's a collaboration with singer Monica Queen – whose presence on the record really makes for this magnificent vibe – a voice we'd love to hear more of – and production is by Chris Bruce, a longtime musical partner of Connelly, who sets a perfect tone for the material. Titles include "A Desolate Spell", "The Lowland Fulcrum", "A Maze Amongst The Tenements", "Tae The Poets", "My Father Took Me Everywhere", "Let Us Be Hushed", and "A Phantom Marriage". CD

✨✧ Norman ConnorsLove From The Sun ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
A spiritual jazz masterpiece from drummer Norman Connors – one of those unique albums he cut before moving into soul music – done at a level that rivals the early 70s genius on labels like Strata East or Impulse Records! Connors worked with many contemporaries on those labels, and gets a good degree of help from them here, too – in a massive lineup that includes Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Gary Bartz on alto, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Buster Williams on bass, Bill Summers on drums, and even Dee Dee Bridgewater on a bit of vocals too! With a lineup like that, it would be easy to lay back and just do nothing – but you can really hear Connors' musical vision taking the lead – that warmly soulful approach that was there right from the start, given some great focus here by producer Skip Drinkwater. Tracks are all long, and free-flowing – a bit out at times, but always returning to the modal pulse of Connors' soulful rhythms. Titles include "Carlos II", "Kumakucha", "Holy Waters", "Revelation", and "Love From The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary CorbenGods In Brasil (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mad About Records/Avolta (Portugal), 2020. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 34.99 About November 15, 2024
A really unique album from singer/songwriter Gary Corben – his first album, but a project that comes after a long relationship with Brazilian music – tuned beautifully here in the studio with production from Kassin! Kassin really helps give focus to Gary's lyrics – which are in English, on songs that draw from a rich history of Brazilian music – something Corben knows about plenty, given his seminal work reissuing 60s and 70s material as head of the Whatmusic label! Kassin's got a decades-long friendship with Corben, and you can really hear the warmth of that relationship here – as the tunes have a gentle, easygoing vibe that remind us of the spirit that made the Joao Donato album Quem E Quem such a wonderful and unique album. Titles include "Donateando", "Cheese Boogaloo", "Eu Nao Vou Mais", "Shangri La", "Tema Perdido", "Sorriso De Manha", and "Puma 72". LP, Vinyl record album
