Harry BeckettFlare Up (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Decca (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
A crowning moment of genius from trumpeter Harry Beckett – a musician who's graced a heck of a lot of records over the years, but who really knocks it out of the park with this amazing early session as a leader! Harry's work on flugelhorn is worth the price of admission alone – bold, focused, and full of all these sharp edges that really mark a new moment of expression on the instrument, equally matched by his work on trumpet too. Yet the overall vibe of the group is what really sends the record home – sounds on piano from John Taylor, vibes from Frank Ricotti, soprano and tenor from Alan Skidmore, and baritone and soprano from John Surman – all key players on Beckett's scene, really hitting their heights here. Arrangements are by Surman, Beckett, and Graham Collier – all of whom wrote material too – and titles include "Flare Up", "Where Fortune Smiles", "Flow Stream Flow", "The Other Side", "Rolli's Tune", "Fools Play", and "Third Road". LP, Vinyl record album
(A wonderful pressing – heavy vinyl, and a flipback cover just like the original record! New mastering from the original tapes by Gearbox, and a bonus insert of notes.)

✨✧ Harry BeckettJoy Unlimited ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – the kind of easygoing electric work that he seemed to do better than anyone else on the British scene of the early 70s! The record's got a laidback approach that's really unique – one that pits Beckett's trumpet against guitar by Ray Russell, keyboards from Brian Miller, and additional bass, drums, and congas – the last of which are used to underscore the sound nicely. The sound shows almost no influence from the electric trumpet jazz of Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, or Freddie Hubbard – and is instead uniquely Beckett's own bag – almost always slightly funky or grooving, but never too much so – and neither too out nor too jamming, with a lanquid quality that's totally great. Titles include "No Time For Hello", "Bracelets Of Sound", "Rings Within Rings", and "Not Just Tomorrow". CD

✨✧ Harry BeckettWarm Smiles/Themes For Fega ... CD
Vocalion/RCA (UK), 1971/1972. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by British trumpeter Harry Beckett – two RCA albums from the early 70s, presented in a single package! Warm Smiles is a set that's done in a free-flowing, open-ended sort of style – one that owes plenty to the changes at the time in the work of Miles Davis and Donald Byrd! The group here is probably a bit more modern than those references might imply – with John Taylor on electric piano, Mike Osborne on alto and soprano sax, and Frank Ricotti on percussion and vibes – all flowing together beautifully under the leadership of Beckett's trumpet – which certainly rings with the "warm smiles" sound you might guess from the title. The style's sometimes a bit tender, but never too sleepy or laidback – and the mix of electric piano and trumpet is especially great on the more far-reaching numbers! Titles include "Harambee", "To Me, For Me", "Tomorrow Morning Early", and "Tender Is The Sky". Themes For Fega is a really bold step forward for trumpeter Harry Beckett – and an album that's much more outside than some of his previous work! The set was recorded live, and has that freewheeling, open sort of style that was showing up heavily in the British jazz scene as the 70s moved in – a style that's not as all-out free as the European improvisers were pushing, but which has a fair bit less song structure than before – and which really survives on the strength and musical vision of the individual soloists! The group here features some excellent work by Alan Skidmore on soprano and tenor sax, plus electric piano by John Taylor, alto by Mike Osborne, and percussion and vibes from Frank Ricotti. Titles are all originals by Beckett – perfectly suited to his soaring, leaping sort of sound on the trumpet – and tracks include "Cry Of Triumph", "Spiral Feelings", "Farewell Fega", "Everyone Is Me", and "Enchanted". Ian Carr with NucleusSolar Plexus/Belladonna ... CD
Vertigo/BGO (UK), 1971/1972. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 19.98
Two jazz rock classics – back to back as a 2CD set! Solar Plexus was a pivotal album in the career of British jazzman Ian Carr – one that had him really opening up into some trippy, spacey grooves – adding in a lot of keyboards, kicking up the grooves, yet still never losing the strong jazzy finish that was the best part of his earlier work. Players on the set include trumpeters Harry Beckett and Kenny Wheeler, guitarist Chris Spedding, and keyboardist Karl Jekins, who really throws in some groovy lines on the set! Titles include "Elements 1 & 2", "Snakehips Dream", "Torso", "Spirit Level", and "Bedrock Deadlock". Belladonna is one of the heaviest electric sets from UK trumpeter Ian Carr – and that's really saying a lot, given how much heavy work he cut with his group Nucleus! The sound here is a groundbreaking mix of acoustic horns and keyboards – trumpet from Carr, and a mix of tenor, soprano, alto, and flute from Brian Smith – coming into contact with the Fender Rhodes of Dave MacRae and the Hohner electric of Gordon Beck! The pairing of keys is wonderful – and the whole thing is sewn together by the guitar of a young Allan Holdsworth, who's very much in the sway of Carr's sound here, instead of the later directions he'd take as a leader. The set might be worth it alone for the massive "Summer Rain" – a slow funk track that trips along beautifully – but the whole thing's great, and other titles include "Belladonna", "Mayday", "Suspension", and "Hector's House". Never-issued live work from British jazz legend Graham Collier – a performance that follows hot on the heels of his classic Down Another Road album, and which continues with a very similar vibe! That album is a modal masterpiece that stands as one of the key moments in British jazz at the end of the 60s – and here, bassist Collier furthers the magic of that wonderful album, but with a freer, more spontaneous sort of live energy – leading a very cool group that features Nick Evans on trombone, Harry Beckett on trumpet and flugelhorn, Stan Sulzman on tenor and alto, Karl Jenkins on piano and oboe, and John Marshall on drums. Collier's basslines alone are worth the price of admission – but there's so many other wonderful touches too – even the oboe work by Jenkins, which echoes some of the exotic tones of Yusef Lateef a few years earlier. Elton Dean's NinesenseHappy Daze/Oh For The Edge ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Seminal work from British reedman Elton Dean – two classic Ogun albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Happy Daze – a set that's got a lot more complicated class than you might expect from the title – really wonderful large ensemble arrangements penned by Dean, and definitely in the spirit that he claimed made the group the heir to Keith Tippett's previous group of the late 60s! The music here is all nicely inside, and pretty darn soulful – swinging and stepping with a bit more of a groove than some of the other Ogun Records work of the time – really back to that hip point at the end of the 60s, when British jazz groups stretched out in their spirit, but never got too avant in their style – a perfect blend that Dean really recreates here, with help from players who include Alan Skidmore on tenor, Harry Beckett on trumpet, Mark Charig on trumpet and tenor horn, Nick Evans and Radu Malfatti on trombones, Keith Tippett on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. Titles include "Nicrotto", "Seven For Lee", "Sweet FA", and "Three For All". On Oh For The Edge, there's definitely an edge to the music – but one that's a bit different than that of some of Elton Dean's contemporaries in the 70s British scene! Dean brings a lot more swing and soul to this record than you might expect – working with a large group, but never letting the players get totally outside – which is a real change from some of the more freely improvising UK ensembles of the period. Dean's own work on alto and saxello are totally great – as are the core rhythms of the group, which come from Keith Tippett on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. But we're also plenty happy to hear Alan Skidmore on tenor, Harry Beckett and Mark Charig on trumpets, and Nick Evans on trombone. The recording has a very good "roomy" sound to it that gives it a darker edge than some of the other Ogun recordings from the time – and tracks include "Fall In Free", "Dance", "Friday Night Blues", and "Prayer For Jesus". Deram/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
One of those really great records from a time on the UK scene when some groups were effortlessly mixing jazz and rock elements up in the mix – but in ways that are very different than some of the more familiar jazz rock modes of the mainstream! Gaillard have plenty of strong horn solos on this set – not in a brassy bigger lineup, but as a way of bringing in tenor, trumpet, or other instruments where you might normally have a guitar solo – also blown with qualities that show that the musicians in the group are doing a lot more than just flavoring in the tunes! Players include Tony Roberts on tenor and flute, Lyle Jenkins on tenor and baritone, Dave Caswell on trumpet, and even the great jazz musician Harry Beckett on flugelhorn – and the record also sports some nice sitar, Hammond, and electric piano as well. Geoff Brown and Andy Abbott handle vocals – and titles include "Open Up Your Mind", "Something's Going On", "Premonition", "In Your Minds Eye", "Winter Spring Summer", "Ask For Nothing", and "New Dawn Breaking". A great precursor to the legendary album Tanglewood 63 – one of the touchstones of British jazz at the start of the 70s, and a masterpiece from trombonist/arranger Mike Gibbs! The tracks here are live studio takes on some of the tunes that appeared on the set, plus other material too – all crafted with Gibbs' stunning sense of color and tone, as he brings together free-thinking acoustic jazz musicians with a few slight electric touches from Chris Spedding on guitar, Mick Pyne on organ, and Roy Babbington on organ – players who really help state the fact that the music is new and different, but never in a more familiar jazz-rock way! The horn players are excellent too – and in addition to Gibbs on trombone, the set features work from Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Chris Pyne and Malcolm Griffiths on trombones, and Alan Skidmore, Stan Sulzman, Tony Roberts, and Jim Phillip on reeds. Drums are by John Marshall on most tracks, and Frank Ricotti adds in a lot of cool percussion – including some mighty nice vibes – on titles that include "Canticle", "Country Roads", "Sojurn", "Five For England", "Fanfare", "June The 15th 1967", and "Tanglewood 63". A tremendous run of music from the great Keef Hartley – a British drummer who was maybe not the biggest name on the scene, but who created some wonderfully groovy music on the albums in this set! The records are a brilliant blend of jazz and rock elements, but in ways that are so different from so many other jazz rock records of the time – maybe in part because Hartley could always bring a lot of soul and a bit of funk to his drums, while still also keeping things in more of the rock side of the spectrum overall – yet opening the door to let in some key jazz musicians from session to session – including trumpeters Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther, reedmen Johnny Almond and Jimmy Jewell, and organist Wynder K Frog – just a few of the players who really give these records a special sort of vibe! It's a bit hard to peg the sound of the records in just a few words – in part because they each have their own flavor – but they're all great, not a weak one in the bunch – and the package features the full albums Halfbreed, Battle Of North West Six, Overdug, Time Is Near, Little Big Band, Seventy Second Brave, and Lancashire Hustler. PLUS, there's also 15 bonus tracks added to the set – mostly live, and some live in studio! CD

A wonderful wonderful set from the British jazz scene of the late 60s – beautifully inventive large ensemble material, done under the direction of Neil Ardley – and featuring some of the best British jazz musicians of the time! The group's a showcase not only for creative young talent in the UK, but also for the growing sense of composition as well – and the music on the set is penned by Ardley, Michael Garrick, Mike Taylor, and Michael Gibbs – as well as new arrangements of work by Miles Davis and John Coltrane. As in the best material from Ardley, Garrick, and Gibbs, there's a really fresh way of coming together for the instrumentation – quite different than large group material in both the US, and even other areas of the 60s European scene – delivered with wonderful imagination by musicians who include Derek Watkins, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, and Ian Carr on trumpets; Michael Gibbs and Derek Wadsworth on trombones; Barbara Thompson on flute and soprano sax; Dick Heckstall Smith on tenor and soprano; Frank Ricotti on vibes; and even Jack Bruce on bass! By the time of the record, trumpeter Ian Carr already had a great run on the left side of the UK jazz spectrum – and here, with his group Nucleus, he embraces all sorts of amazing sounds and styles – using plenty of electric piano from Soft Machine's Karl Jenkins, guitar from Chris Spedding, and a VCS3 synth from Keith Winter – alongside more familiar jazz elements on tenor from Tony Roberts, soprano and flute from Brian Smith, and additional trumpets from Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett! Some of the greatest work we've ever heard from legendary British guitarist Ray Russell – a set that was not issued to the public at the time, but recorded especially for the BBC – and with a sound that's every bit as striking as his famous albums for CBS! There's maybe a slightly more inside vibe going on here – music that often has these nice modal currents, but still delivered with plenty of Ray's unusual flair and style on the guitar – in a lineup that also includes the great Harry Beckett on trumpet and flugelhorn, plus Tony Roberts on saxes, Nick Evans on trombone, Daryl Runswick on bass, and Alan Rushton on drums – a lineup who seem to understand each other intimately, whether in moments of free improvisation or cohesive swing! A really fantastic little collection – a look at the way that sounds from the Caribbean changed over nicely when brought to the UK scene – where immigrants from former British territory really helped to transform the sound of London in the 70s! The music here is served up in a range of different styles – certainly reggae, but with plenty of funk and soul too, mixed with other elements from the islands – all brought into new play together when taken up in the UK! Right from the start, the English artists were starting to put their own spin on things – so the cuts within offer up all these great new directions – maybe even more surprises than you're used to finding on some of the other collections from the Soul Jazz label! The presentation of material is superb, and there's some very detailed notes as well – with cuts that include "No Time For Hello" by Harry Beckett, "Ooh Boy" by Sandra Reid, "Don't Call Us Immigrants" by Tabby Cat Kelly, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Black Pride" by Brown Sugar, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Positive Vibrations" by Pebbles, "Love Money" by Funk Masters, "Ragga Trip" by Ragga Twins, "Be Thankful For What You've Got" by Winston Curtis, "Fug" by Cymande, "Sticks Man" by Black Slate, "Rising To The Top" by Dee Sharp, "Misty Winter" by Digital Mystikz, "Compelled" by Cosmic Irden, and "Still In Love" by Janet Kay & Alton Ellis, and "Java Bass" by Shut Up & Dance. It's always such a great surprise when we find a record like this – a moment when someone got a chance to really give things their all, and definitely did so – and even if the label never promoted the set, they certainly did the work to allow it to exist – setting Anderson up with help in the studio from Harry Beckett on flugelhorn, Mick Weaver and Peter Dines on organ, and Lyn Dobson on flute. Vertigo/Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from trumpeter Ian Carr and his Nucleus group of the early 70s – maybe one of the few jazz rock groups that was ever able to work with a fair bit of jazz in their sound! Unlike his contemporaries, who often started in rock first, then added some horns – Carr was already coming off an important 60s legacy, co-leading a group with tenorist Don Rendell – so the vibe here is like an extension of that very rhythmic, very tonal modern work – but with the addition of electrified instrumentation – thanks to the guitar work of Chris Spedding and keyboards of Karl Jenkins – who plays some fantastic electric lines throughout! The vibe is maybe a bit in the territory of early 70s electric work by Miles Davis and Donald Byrd (pre-Mizell for the latter) – but there's maybe a farther-reaching concept at play on many of the records, at a level that always helped the group cross over to the prog crowd, and move beyond just a straight jazz audience. Other key players include Brian Smith on tenor and soprano saxes – a really fantastic part of the lineup – plus Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums – and as the albums move along a bit, the lineup shifts slightly, and also opens up to guests who include Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Tony Levin on drums, and Norma Winstone on voice. And although some of the albums have been reissued before, this is the first set to really dive in completely – and bring together material from the Vertigo Records releases that include Elastic Rock, We'll Talk About It Later, Solar Plexus, Belladonna, Labyrinth, Roots, Under The Sun, Snakehips Etcetera, and Alley Cat. The great second album from Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath – a record that's much more obscure than the group's debut, and which has them moving into even deeper territory! As before, there's a wonderful post-colonial groove going on here – one that builds from McGregor's roots in South African jazz, but inflects it with some of the bolder, more modern modes of the London jazz scene in Chris worked after leaving Africa in 1964. But unlike before, some of the more free-thinking London styles take even stronger roles here – stretching out in solos that are a bit looser and more exploratory, and which point the way towards the more avant-oriented direction that McGregor and contemporaries would take in the Ogun years – yet not in ways that leave behind the inherent sense of rhythm in the music. The album starts out with rolling South African jazz piano lines that are quite familiar – but then soon opens up into much less structured territory, with solo work from players who include Mongezi Feza, Harry Beckett, Alan Skidmore, Mike Osborne, Harry Miller, Gary Windo, Dudu Pukwana, and Nick Evans. Most tracks are long – and titles include "Think Of Something", "Joyful Noises", "Nick Tete", "Do It", and "Funky Boots March". CD

✨✧ John SurmanHow Many Clouds Can You See? ... CD
Deram/Vocalion (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A near-perfect album from the great John Surman – recorded at the crossroads of the British jazz scene as it stepped into the 70s, and done with a fullness and focus that Surman hardly matched again! As with some of the other Deram sessions of the time, the album's overflowing with great players from the cream of the British new wave of jazz – including Barre Phillips on bass, Tony Oxley on drums, Alan Skidmore on tenor, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and John Taylor on piano – but despite strong work from the entire ensemble, Surman's work on baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet are a tremendous highlight here – poised between some of Eric Dolphy's most inventive modes on the instruments, and some of the greater changes to come in the European free scene of the 70s! There's a cohesiveness here that's really wonderful – a sound that's never too free, nor too overindulgent – but also not as tightly arranged as on work by some of Surman's contemporaries. Titles include "Caractacus", "Galata Bridge", "Premonition", and the long suite "Event". CD

✨✧ Neil Ardley's New Jazz OrchestraOn The Radio – BBC Sessions 1971 ... CD
Dusk Fire/BBC (UK), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic live recordings from the legendary New Jazz Orchestra of Neil Ardley – a key force that united the worlds of British avant jazz and rock at the start of the 70s – but with a style that leaned a lot more towards the world of the former overall! Many of these players are artists who helped forge a whole new voice for Brit jazz in the 60s, and some were then rising to work with prog groups on bigger labels too – yet they all come together here wonderfully under the direction of Ardley – a genius for balancing freedom and cohesion, individual ideas and group energy! The tunes explode with the same sort of bold colors as Neil's few classic albums of the period – and the first six tracks feature a large group with Derek Wadsworth and Mike Gibbs on trombones, Don Rendell and Dick Heckstall-Smith on reeds, Dave Greenslade on organ and electric piano, Frank Ricotti on vibes, and Harry Beckett, Ian Carr, and Henry Lowther on trumpets – while the last track features a smaller group with Rendell, Carr, and the unusual inclusion of Barry Guy on amplified bass and Keith Winter on electronics. All tracks are well-recorded, and pulled from the BBC vaults – and titles include "Stratusphunk", "Time Flowers", "Terre De Miel", "The Immortal Ninth", "Pendulum", and "Half Blue". CD

My Only Desire (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic longform composition from British jazz legend Graham Collier – presented here for the first time ever, and every bit as crucial as his Fontana albums from the late 60s! Here, Collier's at the helm of a large ensemble – with Harry Beckett as the key soloist on trumpet and flugelhorn, plus full backings from the larger Swedish Radio Jazz group – a lineup that's filled with all-star players who include Arne Domerus on alto, Lennart Aberg on tenor and soprano, Bertil Lovgren and Jan Allen on trumpets, Rune Gustafsson on guitar, and Bengt Hallberg on piano – all giants on the Swedish scene of the time, and perfectly realizing Collier's vision here! There's nice use of guitar in the group from Ed Speight, who also solos a fair bit – and there's electric bass at many points, which gives a great lilt to the music – presented here in five fantastic movements, overflowing with color and life – "Red Sky In The Morning", "Clear Moon", "Halo Round The Sun", "Red Sky At Night", and "Mackerel Sky". ✨✧ Graham CollierDown Another Road/Songs For My Father/Mosaics ... CD
Fontana/Philips/BGO (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
3 incredible albums from the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – all together in one 2CD package! Down Another Road is incredible work from one of England's greatest jazz talents – bassist Graham Collier, a player with an amazing ability to absorb a lot of the modern and progressive influences of his jazz generation – but all without succumbing to the same indulgences as them – a fact which resulted in a razor-sharp style that forged some of the freshest jazz ever to come out of the UK. This 1969 album is a masterpiece – filled with a modal groove and a strident searching theme, yet also as tight and grooving as most of the best Blue Note sessions from the same time. Harry Beckett's on trumpet, Nick Evans is on trombone, John Marshall plays drums, and Stan Sulzmann handles the reeds. Tracks include "Down Another Road", "Danish Blue", "The Barley Mow", and "Aberdeen Angus". Songs For My Father is a masterpiece of modernist soul jazz, with a sound that recalls the best late Blue Note work by Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley. Alan Wakeman's tenor is perfectly pitched, and searingly searching; Harry Beckett's trumpet is round, lyrical, and filled with soul; and the piano of John Taylor comps along in chunky modal grooves that make the whole album fall together brilliantly. Tracks include "Song One", "Song Two", "Song Three", etc – and they're all fantastic! Mosaics is a wonderfully searching session – filled with warm McCoy Tyner-esque modal moments, and searing post-Coltrane solos! The album comprises one long piece – Collier's "Mosaics" – performed live by a group that includes Alan Wakeman on tenor and soprano, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Geoff Castle on piano. "Mosaics" has that amazing mid 60s Coltrane quality of going out in a spiritual kind of way – yet always returning to the groove, never getting too free, and always remaining firmly focused on the direction ahead. All players are great, and the record crackles with the intensity of a classic session on Impulse! CD

British Progressive Jazz (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album with a very colorful cover – which is a good indication of the sounds within from the great Graham Collier – music from that moment when his sense of composition and arranging were really opening up some strong new colors in British jazz! The set features a great group with two surprising players – guitarist Pierre Cavalli, whose lines make for some really wonderful elements to the mix of tones – and the great trumpeter Ted Curson, who's working here alongside more likely Collier bandmate Harry Beckett – both players at a key moment in their musical development! The lineup also features some fantastic reedwork too – tenor, bass, clarinet, and flute from Tony Roberts; oboe, soprano, and baritone from Karl Jenkins; and tenor, flute, and alto from Stan Sulzman – players who get some nice grounding from the twin trombones of Nick Evans and John Mumford. John Marshall is at the base of the sound on drums – and the set of all original numbers by Collier include "Indian Flower", "Across The River", "Indian Rock", "Backtrack", "Indian Summer", and "View From Hungerford Bridge". ✨✧ Keef Hartley BandBattle Of North West Six ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous set from one of the best – and most under-recognized – groups of the British jazz rock scene at the end of the 60s! The group have an approach that mixes heavy blues-influenced jamming with some of the lighter, more lyrical touches that were showing up at the time – in a way that gives them a firmly grounded sound at one level, but also a slightly more sophisticated, contemplative approach – making the group almost a UK equivalent to the sound of the Steve Miller Band at the time. The jazzier tracks on the album feature work by some great straight British players – including Harry Beckett and Ray Warleigh – and the album's also got a few nice slightly funky cuts that are known for their breaks! Tracks include "The Dansette Kid", "Hickory", "Not Foolish, Not Wise", "Poor Mabel", "Believe In Me", "Don't Give Up", "Hickory", and "Tadpole". CD

Deram/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 7CD ... Out Of Stock
CD

Not Two (Poland), 1972/1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very rare work from this legendary improvising orchestra – two different recordings from the first decade or so of the group's existence, at a time when they were hardly making any records at all! The first two long tracks are from a 1972 performances in Germany – and feature an early version of the group conducted by Buxton Orr, but with leader Barry Guy in strong formation – in a very large lineup that includes saxes from Evan Parker, Mike Osborne, Trevor Watts, and Alan Wakeman; trumpets from Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Mark Charig, and Dave Holdsworth; trombones from Paul Rutherford, Mike Gibbs, and Paul Nieman; guitar from Derek Bailey; piano from Howard Riley; percussion and drums from Paul Lytton and Tony Oxley; and more bass from Jeff Clyne and Chris Laurence. The players' ability to move in ways that are both cohesive and individual is breathtaking – on the long selections "Watts Parker Beckett To Me Mr Riley" and "Statements III". Next are two more tracks recorded in London in 1980 – one live, one studio – with some of the same players, but also the addition of Peter Brotzmann and Tony Coe on saxes, Philipp Wachsmann on violin, and John Stevens on percussion – on the tracks "Quasimode III" and "Appolysian". Flying Dutchman, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A killer set of searing soulful spiritual material from Oliver Nelson – and one of his best albums of the 70s! There's hardly anything "Swiss" in the music – save for the fact that it was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest – as the large ensemble recording has Nelson at the helm of a very hip group of musicians – really stretching out into territory that's more Strata East than any of his other work, especially on the title track! In addition to the tenor from Gato Barberi and alto from Eddie Vinson – both featured on the title – the set also features Charles Tolliver and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Bosko Petrovic on vibes, Na Na on barimbau, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano. Side one features the soaring "Swiss Suite" – an extended number done for the set – and side two has a bit more Nelson touches coming into play with the progressive lineup – on titles that include "Stolen Moments", "Black Brown & Beautiful", and "Blues & The Abstract Truth". RPM (UK), 1970/1972. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of amazing records from the UK jazz scene at the start of the 70s – all seminal sides from the legendary avant Turtle Records label! First up is Outback, early genius from British saxophonist Mike Osborne – his first session as a leader, recorded in the company of some of the greatest players on his scene! Osborne's got a strong vision here that's apparent from the first note of the set – a mixture of freedom and cohesive energy that resonates with the best modes of the ESP albums cut a few years before this one – stretching out with the new imagination that was setting the London jazz scene on fire at the start of the 70s. Osborne's alto is at the lead of a quintet that also includes Harry Beckett on trumpet, Chris McGregor on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – and the sound is a mixture of some of the post-Blue Notes work of McGregor with bolder-blown trumpet/sax lines from Beckett and Osborne. The album features 2 long tracks – the stark, angular "So It Is", and the slower-building "Outback", which features some especially nice solos from Beckett. Next up is Flight – a complete classic from British pianist Howard Riley – exactly the sort of record that made him as important a new voice on the piano as Cecil Taylor in the US or Alexander Schlippenbach and Martial Solal on the European scene! The set's got the free, fiery vibe of some of Taylor's best work – but with even more inventive sounds from the whole trio – which also includes Barry Guy on bass and Tony Oxley on drums and amplified percussion – a tremendous lineup that's equally matched, and brilliant throughout! Riley is as wonderful as on his solo sessions – but he's almost even more incredible here for the way he balances things between all the players, and gives both Oxley and Guy some key space to make themselves known. Titles include "Cirrus", "Motion", "Flight", "For Lesley/For Sue", and "Forgotten Game". Last is Pause & Think Again – marvelous work from pianist Mike Taylor – maybe the greatest album we've ever heard from this under-recognized British genius, and a set that's got some of Taylor's most inventive writing and arrangements! The group's larger than some of Taylor's usual settings – and features John Surman on soprano sax, Stan Sulzmann on alto, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Kenny Wheeler on trumpet – all players who are arranged in this style that lets them break free in strongly voiced solos, while still also hewing to Mike's wonderful sense of color and tone – a mix of structure and individual creativity that's a bit like some of the early Surman work on Deram, or that label's music with some of his contemporaries. The group also features Chris Laurence on bass and Tony Levin on drums – and Norma Winstone adds in some heavenly vocalizations at points. Titles include "And Think Again", "White Magic", "Pause", "Interlude/Soft Winds", and "Awakening/Eye To Eye". Great package – a box with all three records in album-style covers, and a huge booklet of notes! CD

Resteamed (UK), 1976/1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Not the earliest work of pianist Stan Tracey – but two wonderful albums from the 70s, both of which show his mighty talents in the space of a larger group! The Bracknell Connection is one of the greatest post-Landsdowne recordings by British pianist Stan Tracey – a killer large group session that's cut in the best tradition of his best 60s work! Unlike some of Tracey's other 70s sides, which can get a bit too free, this one still has a tight, sharp jazz focus – one that makes Tracey's off-beat playing sound far better than it does in a structure-less setting. The other players in the group are all quite strong too – and soloists include Harry Beckett on trumpet, Peter King on alto, and Art Themin on tenor and soprano. Titles include "Timespring", "Cuddly", and "Agitato Sympatico". Also features a previously unissued track – "Chiffik". Salisbury Suite is another great octet session from Tracey – one that's strongly graced by his tremendous work on piano – forceful, angular, and modern – yet without any of the excesses of some of his solo or trio work of the time! Tracey really seems to come into his own in a larger group recording – keeping his cool enough as a leader, and really setting the tone for the other players – pushing them into hip formation, but always getting them to swing as well. Players include Art Themen on tenor and soprano, Don Weller on tenor, Jeff Daly on alto, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Malcolm Griffiths on trombone – and titles include "Peg Leg Bates", "Miff", and "Ballad For St Ed". A seminal bit of work from Mike Westbrook – recorded back in the early years of his career, when he still had a pretty sharp edge! Like Westbrook's first few albums on Decca, this set features the British avant jazz maestro playing piano with a large ensemble of some of England's finest jazzmen – including Ray Warleigh, Alan Skidmore, Harry Beckett, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Rutehrford, and Harry Miller. Norma Winstone sings on a few tracks, bringing in her lovely voice in the way that she does on Westbrook's best albums – but overall, the set's a bit more out there and more avant than some of his earlier work, but still has the majestic cohesiveness that makes his work of the time so great. The work is one long piece, split into 9 segments. CD
