✨✧ Haggis HornsKeep On Movin' ... CD
First Word (UK), 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Haggis Horns are back, and funkier than ever – coming across with a mighty tight groove, and a wonderful sound that moves nicely into some more sophisticated 70s funk territory too! There's a sense of perfection to the record right from the very first note – a shift from before that's almost like the changeup that occurred on the west coast as artists moved from the funky 45 underground to work for labels like Fantasy and Prestige! And in fact, there's a vibe here that almost reminds us of the best Fantasy Records funk of the 70s – especially a group like Pleasure, given the well-crafted instrumentation the Haggis Horns have this time around. Horns are still very much part of the groove, but the bottom elements are almost even better – really old school rhythms from a great set of drums and bass, and tight keyboards which sew things up nicely – and further the more topshelf side of the record. The lovely Nia Saw sings on a number of cuts – again with a cool quality that's different than the usual funky diva – and titles include "On The Edge", "The Jerk", "Pass It On", "Way Of The Haggis", "Movin On", "Love Gets You High", "Putting On The Beef", and "The Cockroach Grind". Jazz DefendersKing Phoenix ... LP
Haggis (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
The Jazz Defenders are a group who definitely live up to their name – a combo who start things out in the deep funk territory of some of their labelmates on Haggis, but who also bring in plenty of jazz inflections too – working here in a great hybrid of the two modes, with a range that's a lot deeper than you might expect! And we'll admit, these guys look a bit soft on the cover – but the record's got plenty of bite, and the horn parts are especially nice – tight work on trumpet from Nick Malcolm and tenor from Nicholas Dover – all sewn together with a strong mix of rhythmic piano, organ and Wurlitzer from George Cooper – who also wrote most of the material on the set. Titles include "Munch", "The Oracle", "Twilight", "Love's Vestige", "Wagger Jaunt", and "Perfectly Imperfect". LP, Vinyl record album
