✨✧ Lonnie SmithFinger Lickin' Good ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Good ... Out Of Stock
A monster batch of funky tracks from organist Lonnie Smith! The album's his first ever – and predates the Blue Note sides by a few years – issued by Columbia around the time that Lonnie was working for the label as George Benson's organist. Lonnie brings a rawness to the album that you're not likely to hear on a Columbia session from the time – and he's joined by soul jazz heavyweights like George Benson, Blue Mitchell, Melvin Sparks, and King Curtis. Tracks are short with a hard wailing organ jazz groove – and titles include "Hola Muneca", "Minor Chant", "Sideman", "Say Stuff", and "Keep Talkin". LP, Vinyl record album

Ian Berry, edNicholas Krushenick – Electric Soup (hardcover) ... Book
Delmonico, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 60.00
The image on the cover is just the tip of the iceberg – as this lovely book really dives into the legacy of artist Nicholas Krushenick – a unique painter who somehow manages to combine abstract, minimalist, and pop art modes – all at a level that almost seems to prefigure street art and other creations of the Keith Haring generation! Most of the paintings were done in the 60s and early 70s, with revolutionary use of black line and flat color – and the book also features some images from the early 80s as well, interspersed with a few essays on Krushenick, and a vintage interview from 1968. The huge book is almost 300 pages, filled with full color images, and very heavy! Book

✨✧ Love Cry Want (Larry Young/Joe Gallivan/Stephen Nicholas)Love Cry Want ... LP
Lion/Return To Analog, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Rare material that was originally recorded in 1972 by organist Larry Young – some of his most outside material ever, and done with a bunch of young musicians who wail on all of these weird electronic instruments! The set's way wilder even than any of Young's albums that were issued at the time – including the classics with his group Fuel, or even his Lawrence of Newark album – and the album's got loads of wild, very noisy synth sounds and crazy percussion! The tunes come across as sheets and sheets of white noise – with Larry's organ going all over the place in freewheeling solos and groovy rhythm lines. Young plays Hammond, and other instrumentation includes Joe Gallivan on synth, percussion, drums, and steel guitar; Nicholas on guitar synth, ring modulator, hi-tension wires, wind, rain, and thunder (!); and Jimmy Molneiri on drums and percussion. Titles include "Love Cry", "Ancient Place"," Angels Wing", "Peace", and "Great Medicine Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Nicholas PaytonSmoke Sessions ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Nicholas Payton shines in two different ways here – blowing trumpet, and handling piano and Fender Rhodes – often overdubbed, but with a unified sound that makes the album sound wonderful throughout! Part of the strength of the set is the rhythm backing – as Payton works with help from bassist Ron Carter, a player he'd always dreamed of recording with – alongside more regular drummer Karrie Riggins, who fits into the trio with a really magical sense of energy. Tenorist George Coleman joins the group on two tracks – partly as a nod to the Miles Davis album Four & More, which was some of the inspiration for the sound of this set – and titles include "Gold Dust Black Magic", "Q For Quincy Jones", "Big George", "Hangin In & Jivin", "Levin's Ope", "No Lonely Nights", "Big George", and "Lullaby For A Lamppost". Amistad, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 90.99
A massive book – one that's maybe as heavy as every one of Prince's albums stacked together – and which is filled with over two decades worth of images of the superstar, all shot by photographer Randee St Nicholas! Randee didn't start working with Prince until the 90s, but quickly became one of his favorites, and had a huge amount of access – not just shooting Prince in the studio, but also working on larger projects, and spending time with him behind the scenes – all aspects that are captured here in this huge, oversized book! The deluxe volume is almost 400 pages in length, and beautifully bound – with page after page of great images and visual surprises. Book

✨✧ Hamilton De HolandaBrasilianos 2 (CD & DVD) ... CD
Adventure Music, 2010. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant follow-up to the first Brasilianos set from Hamilton De Hollanda – one that's even more dynamic than the first, and which comes with a bonus DVD as well! The group is awash in warm acoustic sounds – Hamilton on 10-string mandolin, Daniel Santiago on acoustic guitar, Gabriel Grossi on harmonica, Andre Vasconcellos on bass, and Marcio Bahia on drums – all working in ways that link the best Brazilian jazz modes of the 70s and 80s with some of the tones of the American acoustic underground! The use of harmonica is especially nice – played with a rich chromatic flair in ways that are similar to Mauricio Einhorn – and titles include "Ano Bom", "O Mundo Nao Acabou", "Paz Paes", "Ajaccio", "Carolina De Carol", and "Rafaela". Also features a bonus DVD – with a live performance! CD

Ni Vu Ni Connu (Luxembourg), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stunning duets between cello and bass – Nicholas Bussmann on the former, and Werner Dafeldecker on the latter – used here in ways that are very different than even some of the more familiar improvised bass sessions we've loved over the years! There's a very careful sense of timing here – as both instruments break from their norms to be these unusual creations in sound – with slow-bowing and other techniques used to create subtle resonances in space, but in a way that's often post-musical, yet never too noisy – punctuated by more familiar actions on the instruments, but again at levels that are thoughtfully unexpected! The set features "Monte Carlo Fallacy" – spread out over both sides of the record. LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful work from Brazilian mandolin player Hamilton De Holanda – working here on a 10-stringed version of his instrument, in a sound that's warmly emotive and filled with imagination! The overall groove is quite gentle – but Hamilton's strings leap out with soaring energy on the best numbers – stepping forth from the quintet backing that includes acoustic guitar, electric bass, drums, and harmonica – the latter of which gives an especially evocative quality to the record. Titles include "Cacua", "Baiao Brasil", "Brasilianos", "Pedra Da Macumba", "Minor Pain", "Forever", and "Longing For The Future". CD

A blend of traditional sounds from around the globe – played on a variety of stringed instruments by the team of Mike Marshall and Hamilton De Holanda! The feel is similar to some of Marshall's other recent work – folksy at the core, but done with some warmer jazz inflections – produced with a light little glow that keeps the whole thing from sounding too rootsy. Marshall plays mandolin, mandocello, and tenor guitar – and Hamilton plays 10-string bandolim and Irish bouzouki – on titles that include "Egypt", "Brejeiro", "Big Cou ntry", "Sao Jorge", " Pra Sempre", "Autumn Leaves", "Ham & Mike", "Receita De Samba", and "Blackberry Blossom". Also features a bonus DVD with live footage! CD

✨✧ Nicholas PaytonCouch Sessions ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that has Nicholas Payton nicely changing it up from the usual – not just playing trumpet, but bringing in a fair bit of piano, Fender Rhodes, and clavinet too – but in ways that are very different than you might expect! Buster Williams is on bass and Lenny Williams is on drums – both of whom at times hit these dynamic elements that really takes us back to their 70s material – yet Payton is clearly the overall driving force of the set, as he uses bits of electronics and samples of voices at times too , but with a quality that's nicely intertwined with the music, and hardly some weird "jazz remix" sort of approach. Trust us, this is definitely one of the most unique projects ever from Payton, and one of his most contemporary-styled records too – with titles that include the originals "His Name Is Lenny", "Bleek's Blues", "Jazz Is A Four Letter Word", and "From A Flicker To A Flame" – plus nice remakes of "Pinocchio", "Along Came Betty", and "The Sorcerer". Louis ArmstrongLouis Wishes You A Cool Yule ... LP
Verve, Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
Louis Armstrong's given the world a number of famous Christmas tunes over the years – but oddly, he never issued a full album of Holiday music over the course of his many decades of recordings – a fact that's finally corrected here, with the first-ever full length record of Louis' Holiday songs! The album's maybe most noteworthy for its final track – an unissued reading of "A Visit From St Nicholas" by Armstrong, with piano backing from Sullivan Fortner – and the album also includes a duet with Velma Middleton on "Baby It's Cold Outside", and with Ella Fitzgerald on "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" – next to other cuts that include "Christmas Night In Harlem", "Cool Yule", "Zat You Santa Claus", "Christmas In New Orleans", "Moments To Remember", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", and "What A Wonderful World". Michael ChapmanPlaying Guitar The Easy Way ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1978. Used Gatefold ... $7.99
A very different album than some of the earlier records that we love from Michael Chapman – but a set that's equally wonderful in its own sort of way! The set is initially exactly what's promised in the title – a record of guitar instruction, but one that's delivered with all the complex and subtle styles that Chapman brought to his own music – at a level that would have really frustrated any beginning guitar player trying to keep up! Think of the set as an all-instrumental outing from Chapman, one that really shows the special touches on his instrument – presented at a level that's a bit like earlier work from other UK giants, like Bert Jansch or John Renbourn. Titles include "Normal Norman", "Loop The Loop", "A Scholarly Man", "Rockport Sunday", "High Wide & Handsome", and "Pipe Dreams". CD

Miles DavisBirdland 1951 ... CD
Blue Note, 1951. Used ... $3.99
Rare lost work by Miles Davis – recordings from 1951 broadcasts from the legendary Birdland nightclub, restored here with surprisingly good fidelity! The recordings are interesting for a number of reasons – first, because the tracks are longer than usual for Miles – certainly longer than some of his shorter LP recordings of the time – and second, because the assortment of players really pushes past the usual suspects! 7 of the tracks feature a sextet that includes Kenny Drew, Sonny Rollins, JJ Johnson, Tommy Potter, and Art Blakey – and then the remaining 3 tracks feature an even more compelling group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Billy Taylor, Charles Mingus, Blakey, and the legendary Big Nick Nicholas on tenor! Titles include "Move", "The Squirrel", "Lady Bird", "Out Of The Blue", "Half Nelson", and "Down". CD

Orrin EvansRed Door ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
We love the music of pianist Orrin Evans in a trio – but we love it even more when he takes on a bigger, more ambitious project like this – a stunning set of tracks done with an array of older jazz legends, as a showcase both to their individual talents, and Evans' visionary role as a leader! Most of the record has a core group with Robert Hurst on bass and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums – both superb players who make the record bristle with energy – with contributions from Nicholas Patyon's trumpet and tenor and flute of Gary Thomas on four tracks, plus vocals from Sy Smith and Jazzmeia Horn, each of whom sing on one number. Two more tracks feature Gene Jackson on drums and Buster Williams on bass – one with tenor from Larry McKenna, the other with trumpet from Wallace Roney – and titles on the album include "Red Door", "Weezy", "Bit Small", "The Good Life", "Dexter's Tune", "Feed The Fire", and "Smoke Rings". Al FosterReflections ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Drummer Al Foster has a hell of a legacy, one that includes some famous 70s work with Miles Davis – and he's a hell of a leader, too – the kind that always seems to get a little sort of something extra from the players in his group! That's definitely the case here, as he works with a lineup that includes Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano, and Kevin Hays on piano and Fender Rhodes – all musicians you'll know from their own records, but who come together here with a strong sense of voice under Al's leadership! Potter feels warmed up and more soulful than usual, Payton seems to have a bit more bite, and Hayes really feels unbridled on the keys – maybe in part because the record also has some excellent work on bass from Vicente Archer. Titles include the Foster originals "TS Monk", "Monk's Bossa", and "Anastasia" – plus takes on "Pent Up House", "Blues On The Corner, "Punjab", and "Half Nelson". CD

Tremendous work from Azar Lawrence – part of a great return to form the reedman has had in recent years – and, if anything, a run of music that's maybe even greater than his legendary sides from the 70s! Lawrence is razor-sharp throughout – spinning out bold, soulful lines on tenor and soprano sax – with a quintet that includes Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Benito Gonzalez on piano, Essiet Okon Essiet on bass, and Jeff Tain Watts on drums! Payton's got a fire that may well surpass his own recent albums – and Lawrence provides a set of original compositions that soar to the stars from the very first note – really wonderful tunes that include "Venus Rising", "Gandhi", "Lost Tribes Of Lemuria", "The Seeker", "One More Time", and "Rain Ballad". ✨✧ Eduardo MateoMateo Solo Bien Se Lame ... CD
Lion, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A wonderfully expanded reissue of this South American rock treasure from the early 70s – key recordings by Eduardo Mateo, easily one of the most enigmatic musicians to ever record on the Uruguay scene! Although once a member of some harder-edged rock acts in the 60s, Mateo is surprisingly warm and gentle on these tracks – slightly folksy at times, but also with echoes of candombe in the percussion of some of these tunes – a unique cross-cultural blend that's made even better through production that's sweetly compressed, but also wonderfully clean and simple. There's an earnest, personal feel to these tunes that reminds us a lot of the work of Alzo & Udine – or Alzo, solo – spare use of percussion underneath acoustic guitar, topped by vocals that really have a way of grabbing us, even when we can't understand the lyrics! Given Mateo's temperament and unreliability in the studio, the original album in the set was more of a "collection" put together by his producer – and it's expanded on greatly here with the addition of 8 more bonus tracks recorded at the end of the 60s – a few live tracks, and a number of other collaborations that follow the spirit of the main album. The package features a wonderful 44 page booklet, loaded with notes and photos – and titles include "Yulele", "Quien Te Viera", "Uh Que Macana", "Nina", "Tras De Ti", "Por Que", "La Chola", "Esa Cosa", "Blues Para El Bien Mio", "Margaritas Rojas", "Hombre", and "Mumi". The album also features guest work from Joel Ross on vibes, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Peter Bernstein on guitars, and Nicholas Payton on trumpets – and titles include "After Minneapolis", "Chicago Blues", "Manhattan", "That's New England", "Alabama", "Where Are You", and "My Heart In San Francisco". The record's very much in the best small combo mode of the New York scene of the time, but also has some unique South American touches too – some of which come from the vocal phrasing of singer Benny Del Solar, others from the always-cool piano work of Alfredo Linares – an artist we love on his own records, and who really adds plenty here too. This set has plenty of strong flute solos in the lead, but also goes for some more contemporary rhythms aimed at the clubs – a bit as if Tenderlonious were trying to turn out some sort of 21st century version of the mix of soul, funk, and jazz that Bobbi Humphrey did with Larry Mizell back in the day! Jazz Is Dead, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A record with maybe the sharpest edge of any of the titles in this excellent series – a set that's certainly more jazz-based than most, thanks in part to the presence of the legendary Henry Franklin on bass, and some superb work on guitar from the great Jeff Parker! Although Franklin is best known for his famous 70s albums on the Black Jazz label, he's continued to be a strong force on the west coast scene for decades, and has issued some sublime records on his own label – and this time around, it's almost as if the team of Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have stepped back a bit, and let Franklin act more as a leader than some of the other artists on previous Jazz Is Dead recordings. Tracks are long, and filled with a sense of exploration that's nicely different than some of Franklin's own records, but equally inspired – with work from other players who include Clinton Patterson on trumpet, David Urquidi on alto, Scott Mayo on tenor and flute, and Nicholas Baker on percussion. Titles include "African Sun", "Feedback", "Cafe Negro", "People's Revolution", "Karibu", "The Griot", and "Memories Lost". CD

Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Henry FranklinJazz Is Dead 14 – Henry Franklin ... LP
Jazz Is Dead, 2022. New Copy ... $25.99 27.99
LP, Vinyl record album

Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 10s/1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. The package has the usual fantastic Fremeaux presentation – with a big booklet of historical notes, in both French and English, to support 66 titles that include "Jamaica Farewell" by Sam Cooke, "Salty Fish Aki Rice" by Ruth Wallis, "Bajan Girl" by Lionel Belasco, "Sly Mongoose" by Sam Manning, "El Gallero" by Dioris Valladares & Angel Viloria, "El Mambo Diablo" by Tito Puente, "Hey Little Girl" by Professor Longhair, "Un Poco Loco" by Bud Powell, "Chee Koo Baby" by Lloyd Price, "Shrinking Up Fast" by Camille Howard, "Ojai" by Joe Lutcher, "Salee Dame" by Albert Nicholas & Baby Dodds, "Inside" by Hector The Ram, "Run Come See Jerusalem"b y Stan Wilson, "I Learn A Merengue" by Robert Mitchum, "Afro Blue" by Cal Tjader, "La Maricutana" by Damiron & Chapuseaux, "Magical Joe" by Herb Jeffries, "Begin The Beguine" by Charlie Parker, "Make It Do" by Slim Gaillard, "Guitarambo" by Mickey Baker, and "Don't Touch Me Nylon" by The Charmer (aka Louis Farrakhan). VariousCumbia Beat Vol 3 – 21 Peruvian Tropical Gems ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A smoking third volume in this mighty look at the Peruvian cumbia scene of the 70s – music that often shares the same blend of guitar, percussion, and keyboards that makes some of the chica grooves from that time so great! The music here maybe owes a bit more to Latin sounds from up north, but the overall execution is very strongly in the modes put forth by Peruvian labels and producers at the time – often with great use of echo, especially in the guitar lines and keyboards – which make things sound very different than anything coming from Colombia or New York at the time! Yet there's also plenty of salsa elements at play here, too – the kind of percussive interplay that might be driving a Cuban or Puerto Rican combo – but nicely different in this setting too. Titles include "Chola Ingrata" by Los Ecos, "Manzana Verde" by Los Tantos, "El Saltamontes" by Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, "La Manzanita" by Los Gitanos, "Descarga Oriental" by Los Orientales De Paramonga, "Larga Espera" by Los Sanders De Nana, "Lamento Moyobambino" by Sonido Verde De Moyobamba, and "La Narajadita" by Grupo Siglo XX. Honest Jons (UK), Late 20s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A fascinating collection of West African music recorded in England during the late 20s – material done for the Zonophone label as part of a big wave of colonial immigration to London at the time! The package is one of the deepest-digging we've seen so far on the Honest Jon's label – and the music, although quite old, is really incredible – done in a range of African styles and languages, and presented with surprising clarity, given the age of the originals. There's a feel here that's almost like ethnographic recordings done in the homelands many years later – and the package is supported by some wonderful notes that paint a vivid picture of the lives and struggles of African immigrants in the UK during the period. Titles include "Garse Yer Fido" by Oni Johnson, "Nitsi Koko Ko Ko" by Isaac Jackson, "Bukay" by John Mugat, "Asin Asin (part 2)" by Kumasi Trio, "Rue Bai Rue Bai" by James Tucker, "Obu Kofi" by Ben Simmons, "Abowe Dsane Nmaka Tso" by The Ga Quartet, and "Wasiu Dowu" by Nicholas De Heer. Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 34.99
A fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Nonesuch, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bigger step into a piano led jazzy style from Allen Toussaint – grooving in a timeless Crescent City influenced sound – a wonderful record, one we'll go back to for years to come! Allen's been a huge part of the New Orleans musical landscape for many, many years, and it's not a stretch to imagine he's had the laidback, but evocative jazz of the territory in his blood for just as long – so it's a wonder that he hasn't made a record like this before now. There's nothing cliche or cheesy in Allen's work here, which has kind of an after hours vibe that suits it well, and he's put together an outstanding group of players. Marc Ribot is on guitar, Don Byron on clarinet, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, David Piltch on upright bass, Jay Bellarose on drums, and guests Joshua Redman on tenor sax and Brad Mehldau on piano. A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! This tenor giant gets better and better with each new album! Eric Alexander is one of our favorite new jazz artists of the past decade – still a relatively young player, but with a sound that's incredible, steeped in years of tradition, yet freely creative in his own unique way. His tenor solos on this set stand up to some of our favorite older work by players like Clifford Jordan or Sonny Rollins, and if anything, the backing may be some of the best he's ever received on record. Alexander's playing here with longtime friend and musical partner Harold Mabern – who's as sympathetic to Alexander's sound as he once was to that of Frank Strozier – and the other players in the group include trumpeter Nicholas Payton, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth. Titles include "Andre's Turn", "After The Rain", "This Girl's In Love With You", "A House Is Not A Home", and "Summit Meeting". CD

Blue Note, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant celebration of Blue Note Records – one that features some key songs from the label's classic years, interpreted by a sharp-edged group of younger players! The lineup here is wonderful – Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and rhythm from Bill Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – all players who are great in their own right, but who really come together with a classic sort of sound here – a vibe that really respects the Blue Note leaders of years past, and which really gets their energy right! The rhythms are tremendous – no surprise, given how great Nash and Washington can be – and the tunes have a soulful, soaring quality that draws on all the joy Blue Note's given the world over the years – proclaimed boldly by the horn solos in the set. Titles include "Little B's Poem", "Inner Urge", "Mosaic", "Dolphin Dance", "Criss Cross", "Search For Peace", "The Outlaw", and "Idle Moments". CD

Haggis (UK), 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first we've ever heard from the Jazz Defenders – but a record that makes it feel like the group has been together for years – as the songs explode with all sorts of fresh ideas and individual voices – all while the whole thing stays in strongly soulful, swinging territory! The tunes are all originals – and the group's led by keyboardist Greg Cooper, who plays organ, piano, and Wurlitzer – in a lineup that also features Nick Malcolm on trumpet and Nicholas Dover on saxes – players who clearly understand an older legacy of soulful jazz from the Prestige/Blue Note side of the spectrum, but who also don't just go for a slavish recreation of that style! Instead, there's lots of interesting rhythmic interplay at the bottom of the tunes, which seems to set the horns and piano in bright new directions – on titles that include "Late", "Hawkeye Jorge", "Costa Del Lol", "Scheming", "Brown Down", and "Top Down Tourism". ✨✧ Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... CD
Atlantic, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Missy and Timbaland (and the usual cast of guest stars) are back and hotter than ever before on Missy's fourth full length, much more of a hip hop record this time, with tons of old school party shouts and new school neo-electro production! Under Construction is kind of a concept album (don't worry, not in the Jethro Tull kind of way) with a theme that celebrates the hip hop golden age of the mid-to-late 80s but with a modern, probably timeless flavor. The status quo R&B that Missy can't seem to get out of her system is here only at a minimum – this is a hip hop record! Past guests like Method Man (turning in a great remake of "Bring The Pain"), Ludacris, and Jay Z show up as well as 50 Cent, Ms. Jade, Beyonce Knowles, and TLC – but as usual, no one steals the show from Mis and Tim. No one would claim Missy is the most scholarly of lyricists, but as a conduit for attitude and a spicy groove she can't be beat, plus her topical and scatological rhymes and choruses fit these hip hop party bumpers like a Kangol & a gold chain. Tons of shout outs to and samples of the old schoolers that are just way too true to be nostalgic, plus strong production from Timbaland that isn't afraid to risk his reputation as an innovator by referencing his influences. The duo may have produced more astoundingly great singles in the recent past, but this is Missy and Timbaland's magnum opus, as far as full lengths go. 13 tracks including "Work It", "Go To The Floor", "Bring The Pain" featuring Method Man, "Funky Fresh Dressed" featuring Ms Jade, "Slide", "Play That Beat", "Ain't That Funny", and more. Very early merengue sounds from Ricardo Rico – served up with an earthy blend that really gets to the root of the genre! A stunning second set from Smalls from saxophonist Tim Ries – a wonderful showcase for both his talents as a writer and as a soloist – and also a surprisingly unified group effort too! Like most of the Smalls Live series, the sound here is hardly that of an old school live jazz album – no long riffing on familiar standards, and instead a very powerful presentation of new ideas before a rapt live audience – tracks that are clearly the result of careful focus and rehearsal, and very dynamic interplay between all the group members! In addition to Tim's work on tenor and sopranos ax, the album also features Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Kalman Olah on piano, Hans Glaswischnig on bass, and Terreon Gully on drums – and the last two players bring an especially strong energy to the record – almost a modal vibe on the long tracks. PM/Teichiku (Japan), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant pairing of talents – Brazilian trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos and the soulful Stone Alliance group of the 70s – coming together here in Rio with extra help from Hermeto Pascoal on reeds, and added work from Brazilian musicians David Slon, Dom Bira, and Erasto De Holanda Vasconcelos! The style is tighter and harder than the usual Brazilian jazz of the time – a bit fusiony at points, but always with a richer vibe that's almost more in a 70s Latin jazz mode – maybe because of the strong bottom end from the trio of Gene Perla on bass, Don Alias on drums, and the mighty Steve Grossman on reeds! It's an especially nice treat to hear Grossman in this setting – a nice change from usual, but one that he really illuminates with his soulful lines – and titles include "Hey Bicho Vamos Nessa", "Risa", "The Greeting", "On The Foot Peg", "A Child Is Born" and "Libra Rising". ✨✧ Steve WilsonPassages ... CD
Stretch, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Saxophonist Steve Wilson is heard here in a variety of settings, in a variety of modes – some bold and dynamic, as on previous records – some a bit more mellow and restrained! Wilson plays alto, soprano, and flute on the set – sometimes both on the same track – and he also plays a bit of "sax keys" too, although we're not entirely sure what that means. Other players include Bruce Barth on electric and acoustic piano, Ed Howard on bass, Adam Cruz on drums and percussion, and Nicholas Payton on trumpet – and the album has all players coming together in different ways from track to track – so that some are full quintet numbers, and others in a more intimate mode. Titles include "Passages", "Wilsonian's Grain", "Days & Nights Waiting", "The Lexter", "Song For Anna", and "Eye Of The Beholder". CD

✨✧ Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Henry FranklinJazz Is Dead 14 – Henry Franklin ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2022. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ VariousBasement Beehive – The Girl Group Underground ... LP
Numero, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the deepest digs into the 60s girl group scene we've ever seen – a package that not only gets way way past the big hits of the time, but also provides much better sound and way more context than the sorts of dodgy CDr collections that have spotted the market for years! It's great to see Numero's magic touch turned onto this sort of world – as the songs here are all super-obscure, and served up from a wealth of rare 7" singles – but come together wonderfully in a beautiful mix of soul and rock, all showing just how many great girl group sounds were recorded back in the day! Many of these numbers are plenty darn catchy – and rival the best coming from Motown or the Brill Building scene – but also have the great distinction of being completely fresh, and backed up with the usual great Numero sense of history in the package – which includes copious notes and loads of great rare images. 2LP set features 28 tracks in all – and includes work by The Contessas, The Shades, Monzaz, Paulette & The Cupids, Toni & the Hearts, Charles Pikes & The Scholars, and lots more acts you've never heard before! ✨✧ VariousNigeria Freedom Sounds – Calypso, Highlife, Apala, Mambo, & Juju – Popular Music & The Birth Of Independent Nigeria 1960 to 1963 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not the usual Nigerian funk collection you might expect – as the music here is from the years before Fela Kuti and other artists exploded onto international 70s fame – and instead, come from a time where the Nigerian scene was busy drinking up influences from a range of other cultures too! As a result, there's a fair bit of Latin and Caribbean elements at play – a bit of that Cuban influence that touched West African music so strongly in the 60s, and other post-colonial elements too – all mixed with regional styles that provide a very particular flavor – on tracks that are heavy on rhythms, jazzy inflections, and lots of great work on electric guitar and horns! The package is the first we've really seen to give this period its due – and the set is presented with the usual stunning Soul Jazz Approach – very detailed notes, and a superb track list that includes "Ariwo" by Chris Ajilo & His Cubanos, "Lumumba Calypso" by EC Arinze, "Save For A Rainy Day" by Sammy Akpabot & His All Stars, "You Cheat Me" by Godwin Omobuwa & His Soundmakers, "Omo Alara" by IK Dairo & His Blue Spots, "Owo Ni Fari" by Heavy Haruna Ishola & His Group, "Cool Cats Invitation" by Victor Ola-Lya & His Cool Cats, and "Baby I Tire" by Charles Iwegbue & His Archibogs. Modern Harmonic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Here's a party that we'd love to be invited to – a festive gathering of bongos and other percussion – served up in a mix of different cuts from a surprising array of sources! The music moves from Latin, to exotica, to jazzy modes – and while percussion is at the core of every cut, there's also plenty of other great elements too – flute lines, organ, guitar, vibes, and vocals at points too – all delivered with a sense of spirit that's totally great! Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo is the main star of the set – and delivers tunes that include "Inspector Bongo", "Escuadron De Policia", "Boyle Heights", and "Cigarillo" – and other tracks include "The Idea Of The Greater Age" by Sun Ra, "Wild Percussion" by Tak Shindo, "Singing Bongos" by Rene Hall, "Where's Tim's Guitar" by Jill Kroesen, "Cinco Sin Titulo" by Herb Schoenbohm's Quintet Ipanema, and "Bongo Birthday Surprise" by Nicholas Carras. Keefe Jackson/Hans-Peter Pfammatter, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Spare duets between reedman Keefe Jackson and pianist Hans-Peter Pfammater – a record that's easily one of Jackson's most contemplative recordings! Keefe plays both the tenor and bass clarinet – the latter of which is especially nice, as it's worked with a thoughtful, down-turning style that makes for lots of blue notes – sounds that have this inherent sense of soul, which often offsets the sharper modernist quality of Pfammater's notes on the piano! Titles include "Vieux Murs", "Liking", "It's Next", "Somber Scholar Of Pride", "Folglich", "Panaesthetic", and "Enthusiasm". Comes in a great limited package, too – silkscreened, and folded cardboard! CD

Haggis (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Jazz Defenders are a group who definitely live up to their name – a combo who start things out in the deep funk territory of some of their labelmates on Haggis, but who also bring in plenty of jazz inflections too – working here in a great hybrid of the two modes, with a range that's a lot deeper than you might expect! And we'll admit, these guys look a bit soft on the cover – but the record's got plenty of bite, and the horn parts are especially nice – tight work on trumpet from Nick Malcolm and tenor from Nicholas Dover – all sewn together with a strong mix of rhythmic piano, organ and Wurlitzer from George Cooper – who also wrote most of the material on the set. Titles include "Munch", "The Oracle", "Twilight", "Love's Vestige", "Wagger Jaunt", and "Perfectly Imperfect". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... LP
Atlantic, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP ...
Far Out (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's Antonio Neves wielding a trombone on the cover – but the set's got elements that move way past his great work on that horn – drawn from very collaborative contributions from different members of the contemporary scene in Rio! The record's got a jazz basis at the core, but quickly explodes into a real style-shifting approach – that legacy of easily mixing modes that has been the hallmark of some of the most creative work from Brazil in recent decades – guided perfectly here by Neves on drums as well as trombone! Antonio sings on one track, and the record also features vocals at points from Leda, Alice Caymmi, Ana Frango Eletrico, and Marcos Esgulera – amidst a whole host of guest musicians too, including Edu Neves on flute, Leo Gandelman on alto, and Hamilton De Holanda on mandolin. Titles include "Lamento De Um Perplexo", "Forte Apache", "Simba", "A Pegada Agora E Essa", "Noite De Temporal", and "Jongo No Feudo". LP, Vinyl record album
