✨✧ Ferkat Al ArdOghneya ... CD
Habibi Funk (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The music of Lebanon never got much global exposure during the 70s – but it's clear that Ferkat Al Ard was bringing plenty of the globe's influences to play on this amazing record – mixing together bits of electric funk, Brazilian jazz, and soulful strings at a level that completely transcends the boundaries of language! The set's a bit like the classic self-titled set by Arthur Verocai from the 70s – music that's completely in a space that's all its own, and which has legendary properties, but also opens up to the listener with charms of its own that require no history or introduction at all – a set that's both personal and majestic at the same time, and which has charms that are impossible to put in words, but which grab you the moment you first give the set a listen. Titles include "Matar Naem", "Juma'A 6 Hziran", "Oghneya", "Matar Al Sabah", "Entazerni", and "Lahnon Lemra'Ati Wa Beladi". CD

✨✧ Bill EvansLive At Ronnie Scott's – With Eddie Gomez & Jack DeJohnette ... CD
Resonance, 1968. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever release of a Bill Evans concert recorded at Ronnie Scotts in London – a place where he cut other work in other years, but maybe not at a level like this! The group is wonderful – Bill's budding relationship with the bassist Eddie Gomez, who was bringing a richness to the Evans piano that even previous players didn't reach – and who was also establishing the bass as as an important voice in the trio as Bill's piano! The drummer is Jack DeJohnette – a player who's just finding his voice in jazz, but a perfect choice for the others here – as the group handles material that includes "Waltz For Debby", "Very Early", "Emily", "Nardis", "Autumn Leaves", "Round Midnight", "Quiet Now", "Stella By Starlight", "Alfie", "Yesterdays", and "Turn Out The Stars". Features a 44 page booklet with previously unreleased photos, a new essay, and interviews with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette! CD

Maya (Aleksander Sever/Omer Govreen/Floris Kappeyne/Wouter Kuhne)Maya ... LP
JMI, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 29.99
A quartet session that mixes vibes and piano – the former from Aleksander Sever, the latter from Floris Kappeyne – but in a way that's nicely different from any sort of historical precedents – such as work from the MJQ or George Shearing, and maybe even more recent recordings from duos like Joe Locke and Kenny Barron! There's a round sort of warmth going on here – a flow that's maybe directed first by piano, then followed by the vibes – and driven equally by the richness of the rhythm work of Omer Govreen on bass and Wouter Kuhne on drums, both players who give the record a dynamic energy that's a really nice change from some of the colder, gentler efforts that might feature vibes and piano. As with other albums on the JMI label, the recording quality really brings out a great deal of color in the performance – on titles that include "Tired", "Trust", "God's Word", "Maya", "Heal", "Fragility", and "Inwoods". Pedway (Caroline Davis/Matthew Golombisky/Quinn Kirchner)Vitalic ... LP
Ears & Eyes, 2022. New Copy ... $18.99 20.00
Moody improvisations from this unique Chicago trio – pulled together from a series of performances recorded in a few different venues, and distilled down to a nicely focused album! The sound here is a blend of the alto sax of Caroline Davis, the basses of Matthew Golombisky, and the drums of Quinn Kirchner – players who seem to find their groove instantly on each individual track, then keep exploring that space in ways that have them pushing the boundaries as the cycles move on – with some especially soaring lines from Davis, at a level that often feels as if she's handling a very different instrument than an alto! Golombisky plays electric bass, which also gives the record a different vibe than if he were acoustic – and titles include "If We Open People Up We'd Find Landscapes", "Home Of Levi Coffin", "Channels", "Vapor", "Film As Dream Film As Music", and "Personal Flotation Device". ✨✧ Jack DeJohnette's Special EditionTin Can Alley ... LP
ECM, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Chico Freeman really shines here with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody". ECM, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nice late 70s work from guitarist Ralph Towner – heard here in a great trio setting with Eddie Gomez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums! Both players have an ear tuned well to the sorts of open, exploratory styles that suit Towner best – but they also have a nice sense of force as well – a way of pushing things up from the bottom without bombastically approaching the rhythms – making the record a bit more than just spare expressions from Ralph on guitar. Towner plays 12 string and classical guitar, plus a bit of piano – and titles include "Waterwheel", "Green Room", "Batik", "Trellis", and "Shades Of Sutton Too". LP, Vinyl record album

Magical sonic interplay from a trio of really well-matched improvisers – and a set that's got a very special quality, too – in that pianist Jim Baker is also handling some electronics! The reed work of Keefe Jackson is filled with all the special tones and phrasing we love in his music – very distinct sounds on both tenor and sopranino saxes – the latter of which is especially great – and it's wonderful to hear baker matching those elements with these equally distinct sound shapes on his electronics, although his piano work is pretty nice too! Julian Kirshner, as always, is a master of understatement on drums – coming in at just the right moments – and titles include "Familiar", "Daily", "Accepted", "As Anything", "Scene", and "Realistically". ✨✧ Gary Peacock/Keith Jarrett/Jack DeJohnetteTales Of Another ... LP
ECM, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful early record from a trio who would flourish even more strongly in years to come – usually under the leadership of Keith Jarrett, but working here with bassist Gary Peacock at the helm – guiding the piano of Jarrett and drums of Jack DeJohnette! The slight change really seems to fit the mood of the record – as it's full of subtle shapes and tones, of the sort we always love from Gary's bass work in the 70s – this way of handling the instrument that's almost as much about sound as it is about notes and melody! Jarrett's piano is a wonderful combination here – more richly melodic, in ways that offset Pecock beautifully – and DeJohnette's drumming is the perfect complement to the pair – often very subtle. Titles include "Vignette", "Tone Field", "Major Major", and "Trilogy" in three parts. LP, Vinyl record album

A set of tracks from the films of Romy Schneider – an actress who's not as well-known now, but who made some superb French films in the 60s and 70s! Like her contemporary Jeanne Moreau, Romy could sing a bit when needed – which she does on a few tracks here, alongside other instrumental moments from the films, handled by a top-shelf assortment of French soundtrack giants! Schneider delivers vocals on "Les Choses De La Vie" and "La Lettre De Rosalie" – and the set also features music from La Piscine by Michel Legrand, Le Vieux Fusil by Francois De Roubaix, La Mort En Direct by Antoine Duhamel, Garde A Vu and La Passante Du Sans-Souci by Georges Delerue – and the movies Cesar Et Rosalie, Le Train, Une Histoire Simple, and Les Choses De La Vie by Philippe Sarde. ✨✧ Wadada Leo Smith with Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Cyrille, Han Bennink, & Pheeroan AklaffEmerald Duets (5CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2022. New Copy 5CD set ... Out Of Stock
Maybe our favorite sort of setting for the trumpet of Wadada Leo Smith – the kind of spare, improvised collaborations that he's done so well since his earliest years on record – presented here in a box that features five full albums' worth of material, each done in collaboration with a key percussionist! The collection features a disc each with Smith playing trumpet and piano – in duets with Han Bennink, Pheeroan Aklaff, and Andrew Cyrille – and a final two CDs that feature Jack DeJohnette on drums, piano, and Fender Rhodes! The difference between the performances is fantastic – and not only shows that deeply collaborative spirit that makes Wadada such a great improviser, able to adapt to any setting – but also showcases the varied strands of free jazz expression on drums and percussion that have marked all of these giants as legends over the decades. We're especially in love with the CDs that feature DeJohnette – as we love his work on piano, and it's great to hear him handle Fender Rhodes – which we're not sure we've heard on record for many years. The whole thing's a beautiful overstuffed package – and part of the fantastic work the Tum label have done to document the seemingly never-ending talents of Smith in recent years! CD

✨✧ John Abercrombie/Dave Holland/Jack DeJohnetteGateway ... LP
ECM, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A whole new kind of trio session for the 70s – one that has the airy, open lines of guitarist John Abercrombie stretching out nicely in the company of drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland! The music is archetypal ECM work of the time – a complete contrast to a guitar trio session from a decade before, or even a few years before on any different sort of label. Abercrombie's got a bit of bite at a few moments, but mostly keeps things spare and spacious – and Holland and DeJohnette are more than happy to follow suit. Titles include "Backwoods Song", "May Dance", "Waiting", "Jamala", and "Sorcery 1". LP, Vinyl record album

Astral Spirits, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's definitely a sense of concentric orbits taking place here – these long-spun lines that have a nicely cyclical quality – not always as straight in terms of rhythms, but with a pulsating energy that really has both players in constellation with each other! Rob Clearfield plays piano and Quin Kirchner plays percussion – and although the music goes a bit outside at points, the tracks still have this nicely structured sensibility – blocks of sound from both players, pushing past conventional rhythmic modes, yet still finding a way to groove! The album features two side-long tracks – "Orbit 1" and "Orbit 2". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack DeJohnetteDeJohnette Complex ... LP
Milestone, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An early album from drummer Jack DeJohnette – and one of the first records to really show the full range of his talents! The players on the record are all a wonderful batch of well-matched up-and-comers from the soul jazz scene of the time – and include Stanley Cowell on piano and electric piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Bennie Maupin on tenor and flute, and Eddie Gomez on bass. DeJohnette's on drums, as you'd guess - but also plays melodica on a few tracks on the album, giving it a weird, eerie quality that really stands out. One of the best of these moments is the album's version of Cowell's "Equipoise" – done fantastically as a jagged little mellow groover, and worth the price of the record alone! Other tracks verge between more out jamming, introspective soul jazz, and Miles-style flowing electric work – and titles include "Brown Warm & Wintry", "Requiem No 1", "Miles' Mode", and "Papa Daddy & Me". ✨✧ Jack DeJohnetteNew Directions ... LP
ECM, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal statement from drummer Jack DeJohnette – a musician who'd already made a pretty big impact in the years before this set – but who really seemed to take off with his New Directions group on ECM! Every player in the lineup is a key sonic pioneer on their instrument – John Abercrombie on guitar, with his great sense of color and tone – Eddie Gomez on bass, with that soundshaping ability he developed with Bill Evans – trumpeter Lester Bowie, really finding a voice here away from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – and drummer DeJohnette, beautifully set free in territory far beyond standard rhythm! The mix of all four musicians is wonderful – and still quite fresh after all these years, despite how many folks might have tried to copy the approach – on titles that include "Dream Stalker", "Where Or Wayne", "Silver Hollow", "One Handed Woman", and "Bayou Fever". The first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet". CD

ECM, 1983. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
No blues here, despite the title – but a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! A set of live improvisations from the trio of Gerrit Hatcher on tenor, Julian Kirshner on drums, and Peter Maunu on guitar, violin, and mandolin – all recorded live on stage in Chicago! The centerpiece of the set is the long "Poem Of The Obtuse Angle" – a beautiful piece that sounds every bit as wonderful as you might expect from the title – somewhat poetic improvisations that draw a lot from Maunu's unusual work on the strings of his electric guitar – which are often used in these spacious, open ways that reflect more on tone than note – matched with some sharper angles on Hatcher's tenor, then giving some really brooding energy from Kirshner's work on drums. That quality definitely continues on the shorter "Bronze Mine" – a tune that builds slow, then increases to intensity that really holds on towards the end! CD

King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

Toshiko Akioshi & Charlie MarianoToshiko Mariano Quartet Live At Birdland ... CD
Studio Songs (Japan), 1960/1961. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99 About January 25, 2023 (delayed)
Early genius from Toshiko Akioshi – a set of live recordings with the early quartet formed with her (then) husband and reedman Charlie Mariano! Mariano's a real treat to our ears in just about any setting – but we're especially fond of his alto work during these under-recorded years – a time when Charlie was really stretching out past the sound of his more familiar 50s sides, yet still with that amazing sense of tone, space, and timing he had at the start! The recordings are relatively laidback – a nice change from the tightness that both Toshiko and Charlie might show in the studio – with a roughness at points that only seems to deepen the soul of their playing. Titles include "Elegy", "Deep River", "Song Of The Farm", "Blues For Father", and "When You Meet Her". CD

Jazz Diaries, 2021. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
Fantastic funky keyboard work from Malik Alston – an artist we loved when he first rose up from the Detroit scene earlier in the century, and who seems to have only gotten better as the years move on! Malik's music has a sophistication here we didn't hear at the start – still largely rhythms and keyboards, but augmented with jazzy contributions from collaborators, and taken into much more spiritual territory overall – definitely with the richness that you might expect from the "painted pictures" title! There's vocals on a few cuts, but the keyboards and other instruments really take the lead – on titles that include "Butterfly", "Where Do We Go", "Linwood", "Rise Up", "Air", and "Almost On The One". ✨✧ Gene AmmonsBoss Is Back! ... LP
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A great comeback for tenor legend Gene Ammons – not just in a musical sense, but also because Jug had spent most of the past few years in prison – as part of the usual trumped-up drug charges that were filed against musicians at the time! At the time of this album, Ammons had not recorded since a very successful flurry of sides recorded in 1961, done for a number of labels, and issued slowly during his time off the recording market – a precursor to this fantastic return to form, which has Gene hitting more of a jazz funk mode, in the best Prestige style at the end of the 60s! Case in point is the presence of Bernard Purdie on drums on a number of cuts – in a lineup that also features some organ from Sonny Phillips, piano from Junior Mance, and electric bass from Bob Bushnell – plus congas from Candido for a nice extra kick! Titles include the funky cuts "Tastin' the Jug" and "Jungle Boss" – plus "Madame Queen" and "Feeling Good". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Early 60s. Used ... $4.99
A wonderful batch of mellow, laidback balladry by Gene Ammons. Like a lot of the two-fers issued by Milestone and Prestige in the 70s when they came under the Fantasy umbrella, this set collects sides from a couple of different sessions, Nice An' Cool and The Soulful Mood Of Gene Ammons in this case. Sidemen are Richard Wyands, Doug Watkins and JC Heard, or Patti Brown, George Duvivier and Ed Shaughnessy. 16 tracks in all, including "Till There Was You", "Little Girl Blue", "Something I Dreamed Last Night", "I Remember You", "Someone To Watch Over You", "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", 'Street Of Dreams" and "Under A Blanket Of Blue". The material was recorded at the Ann Arbor Festival in 1972 – and has the Ensemble playing with a sense of focus and power that's even stronger than their previous indie and European records – really hitting their stride before a large live audience who totally gets their groove, and really eggs them on with enthusiastic support! As usual, the range of instrumentation is great – lots of different reeds, percussion, and brass – handled by the legendary lineup of Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Colin AsherNever A Lovely So Real – The Life & Work Of Nelson Algren (hardcover) ... Book
WW Norton, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 39.95
Writer Nelson Algren is one of our hometown heroes, and spent most of his key years right around the corner of Dusty Groove – so we're always a bit biased when it comes to his work – but you can trust us when we say that this well-done biography is almost as fantastic as some of Algren's classic books! Algren knew the streets of Chicago like the back of his hand – and his interaction with the city and its characters provided Algren with a life's worth of pain and pleasure – a richness of experience that really comes through in the biography. Nelson had a quick rise to fame with the success of The Man With The Golden Arm and a few other key books – but was also the subject of a long FBI investigation, and a number of other political pitfalls too – all documented here in great detail, along with his famous love affair with Simone DeBeauvoir. There's as much sadness and struggle to Algren's life as you'll find in one of his books – and the well-researched volume looks at a stunning array of material to give a full picture of his time and writing. 543 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". LP, Vinyl record album

Craig BannPast Present Future ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Guitarist Craig Bann has a wonderfully rich tone – one that leaps from the record at the very first note, and continues to charm throughout the session – on both upbeat tunes and mellow moments too! Brann handles his chords with a sense of color that's as strong as the masters of the electric guitar in the 50s and 60s – but also works with this really unique edge too – maybe a special sense of tuning, or maybe just his phrasing – all at a level that makes his performance here really stand out from a more traditional guitar trio session. The rest of the group really matches his energy in a fantastic way – Rudy Royston leaping into the fray on drums, and Nick Morrison providing a richness on bass – on titles that include "Irv's Nerve", "Inverso", "A Waltz & A Prayer", "Some Day", and "Victurus". Keith BarrowKeith Barrow (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Keith Barrow's first album of secular soul – a soaring set of vocals that really shows off his gospel roots! The record's produced by Bobby Eli with a bit of a Philly soul touch, but in ways that go quite past the conventional modes of the time – kind of offbeat at points, with a richness in sound that really matches Barrow's vocal range! Keith is one of those singers who's very confident in his style – working lines over and over, and driving a tune into a nice sort of frenzy – even at some mellow moments. We like these mellow moments best – as they have a great sort of focus – and titles include the underground groover "I Put The Twinkle In Your Eye", which has a hook you'll be singing for days, plus the cuts "A World Of Loney People", "Didn't You Know You'd Have to Cry Sometime", "Precious", "Mr Magic Man", and "Questions". Joe Bataan is alive and well – and to our ears, the king of Latin Soul is sounding better than he has in decades! This tasty little set really takes us back to Joe's classic work for Fania – but it's also got a slightly different twist – one that shows a new younger appreciation of the funk side of Joe's work that wasn't always able to come to the forefront in earlier years. Joe recorded the album at the Daptone Studios in New York – so the sound of the set is spot-on all the way through – perfectly recorded to bring out the soul in Joe's music, and handled with some great touches that make the instrumentation as wonderful as Joe's classic-styled vocals! And even more than that, there's also a heck of great new songs on the set – tunes that follow very strongly in the spirit of Joe's older classics, but which have a freshness that makes the album a totally essential part of Joe's catalog. Titles include "Chevere Que Chevere", "Keep The Change", "Call My Name", "Chick A Boom", "I'm The Fool (parts 1 & 2)", "Cycles Of You", "Secret Girl My Superfraud", and "Ernestine". Killer work from a really incredible group – Soweto's Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, a combo who are really rewriting the sound of Afro Funk with music like this – serving up long-jamming tracks that have a mighty fresh flavor of their own! The music isn't in a traditional style – as the instrumentation here is nice and lean, often without any horns soaring over the top – which leaves a lot more focus on the basslines, percussion, and really strong vocals of the group – often trading back and forth between the lead and chorus parts, with a very spontaneous sense of energy throughout! There's a freshness here that's wonderful – not a group building on older modes, but creating amazing sounds of their own – on titles that include "The Journey With Mr Van Der Merwe", "Isivunguvungu", and "Sikhulekile". Edward BergerSoftly With Feeling – Joe Wilder & The Breaking Of Barriers In American Music (hardcover) ... Book
Temple University Press, 2014. New Copy ... $4.99 36.00
We know trumpeter Joe Wilder from his many great jazz recordings of the 50s and 60s – some as a leader, many as a sideman – but we had no idea of the richness of his career until we stumbled upon this book – a long legacy of striving, and one that goes beyond just the world of jazz! From early years, when Joe was one of the first black Marines in WWII, to years that paralleled his time on stage and record – Wilder was also opening the door to symphonic work, TV network performances, and even performing in orchestras on Broadway – all relatively new fields for black musicians, especially given union-based work and its segregationist policies at the time. Wilder always had one of the softer tones in the jazz world, but it's clear that behind it lay a fire that burned brightly, and really soared high. The book is insanely well-done, and really digs into a heck of a lot of detail – almost 400 pages, with great notes on recordings as well! Book

Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine ... CD
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s. Used ... $8.99
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux". Beautiful material by one of our favorite soul vocalists of all-time – a hell of a singer in the 60s, but one who's never gotten her full due as the years went on – able to be heartbreaking and strong at the same time, with a quality that's still amazing all these many years later! Maxine Brown has a voice that's deep, but mature – wonderfully well-suited to the uptown soul production of her label Wand Records – poised with a sense of richness and class that foreshadows so much other soul work to come! The sound here is a groundbreaking mix of acoustic horns and keyboards – trumpet from Carr, and a mix of tenor, soprano, alto, and flute from Brian Smith – coming into contact with the Fender Rhodes of Dave MacRae and the Hohner electric of Gordon Beck! The pairing of keys is wonderful – and the whole thing is sewn together by the guitar of a young Allan Holdsworth, who's very much in the sway of Carr's sound here, instead of the later directions he'd take as a leader. Sweet 80s grooves from Cherrelle – a set that really has the singer cooking strongly with the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis – complete with all the heavy beats you might expect! Jam and Lewis borrow plenty of bottom sounds from the styles of hip hop and electro, and do a great job of mixing the rhythmic elements with Cherrelle's catchy vocals – all in a way that really blows away some of their more chart-topping productions, as the tunes have a bit more of an underground appeal! Make no mistake, this is definitely the poppier side of the soul spectrum – but there's also a freshness here that goes way past Janet Jackson – and which retains some of that smoother, more sophisticated sound we always love in the Tabu label. The approach is quite different than modes that east coast vocal groups were using at the time – and even different than Detroit, too – a really sophisticated blend of styles that shows the Windy City soul scene at its best. The whole thing's great – no filler at all – and titles include "Give It Away", "I Like Your Lovin", "Are You My Woman?", "Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was", and "You're No Longer A Part Of My Heart". Quentin CoaxumYou & I ... LP
Quentin Coaxum, 2021. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A really lovely album from trumpeter Quentin Coaxum – a player we really loved on his debut, but who's grown tremendously as a writer and leader since that time! Coaxum's working here in a mode that's very well-arranged, but still nicely loose and open – this soulful flow that really marks the progression of tracks in a mighty nice way – in a lineup that includes the leader's own solos on trumpet, glowing next to work from Dustin Laurenzi on tenor, Julius Tucker on bass, Cliff Wallace on drums, Andrew Vogt and Joshua Griffin on bass, and Jeff Swanson and Anders Nordstrom on guitars. There's a gentle glow to the whole thing – very unified, thanks in part to the richness of Quentin's trumpet lines – but also with a certain spirit as the group works through shorter tracks that clearly are meant to resonate as a larger whole. Titles include "Selah Song", "Some Things Have Changed", "Constellation", "Words", "Intimacy", "East Boogie Rundown", "Goodbye Alton", and "Forward". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CompostCompost ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Rare funky fusion from Compost! This excellent session by the short-lived group is also definitely up there on the list of stellar fusiony sets that have been too long overlooked. Many of the tracks have a nice hard angular sound to them, with a fusion break sound similar to some of the European albums of the same period, but with a lot more warmth. Bob Moses sings vocals on some cuts, but the strong point of the record is the instrumental grooving. The group includes Harold Vick on reeds, Moses on drums, Jumma Santos on percussion, and Jack DeJohnette on keyboards. Tracks include "Funky Feet", "Thinkin'", "Sweet Berry Wine", "Happy Piece", "Inflamation Blues" and "Bwaata". CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A classic set of spiritual fusion from this short-lived allstar group Compost – featuring Harold Vick, Bob Moses, Jumma Santos, and Jack DeJohnette! Vick's at his moody soulful best here, in a mode that's similar to his Strata East work – and the record also features occasional vocals by Lou Courtney and Jeanne Lee. They hit a fairy feverish, funky jazz mode throughout, and every player is in incredible form here. Titles include "The Ripper", "Moonsong", "Changing Streams", "Mon Cherry Popsicool", "Compost Festival", "Life Is Round", and "Buzzard Feathers". CD

Arthur ConleyI'm Living Good – The Soul Of Arthur Conley 1964 to 1974 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A deep deep deep collection of work from Arthur Conley – one that really shows the true spectrum of his mighty soul talents – and which goes way past his few overplayed hits of the 60s! The focus here is on slow-burners and mellow groovers – tunes that really bring out the depth of Conley's southern soul vocals – a richness that's right up there with his one-time mentor Otis Redding, recorded brilliantly at the legendary Fame studios! The label-spanning collection brings together material for the Atlantic, Fame, Jotis, Ru-Jac, and Capricorn labels – and has the usual top-shelf Ace Records presentation of detailed notes with vintage photos and label scans as well. Titles include "Let's Go Steady", "God Bless", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "There's A Place For Us", "Take Me", "Where You Lead Me", "Stop Knocking", "I Want Your Love", "Otis Sleep On", "Put Our Love Together", "Let Nothing Separate", and "Walking On Eggs". Chris ConnorChris Craft (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1958. Used ... $14.99
Chris' Craft is a great one here – beautifully simple and straightforward jazz vocals, served up at a level that few other singers can match! The album's one of our favorites from Connor's classic years with Atlantic – as it's got a mellow, moody approach that's filled with the darker tones that first caught our ears on Chris' earliest recordings for Bethlehem. Instrumentation here is mostly small combo – arranged by Stan Free, and featuring Free on piano, Bobby Jaspar on flute, Mundell Lowe on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums. Titles include "Be A Clown", "Be My All", "Good For Nothin", "Moonlight In Vermont", "The Night We Called It A Day", "Lover Man", and "On The First Warm Day". CD

Cosmos FactoryCosmos Factory ... LP
Columbia/Holy Basil (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 30.99
A wonderful self-titled set from Cosmos Factory – a Japanese prog group from the early 70s, and one who might have gotten lost in the racks a bit – given that their name and debut title are the same as an album by Creedence Clearwater Revival! Yet the sound here is nothing like CCR – as the record has qualities that are almost like some of the best Vertigo Records material from the European scene of the time – a richness of sound that goes way beyond pure jamming, and which beautifully balances some mellower moments with harder energy and some pretty intense guitar solo too! Titles include "Soundtrack 1984", "An Old Castle Of Transylvania", "Poltergeist", "Fantastic Mirror", and "Soft Focus". LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis BrothersAlgorithm ... CD
Truth Revolution, 2018. Used ... $6.99
Bold work from the Curtis Brothers – Luques Curtis on bass and Zaccai Curtis on piano – a pair who've got the energy here of some of the great earlier brothers teams in jazz! By that, we mean that there's a unified vision to the record – strongly soulful work right from the start, augmented with key work from Bryan Lynch on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, and Ralph Peterson on drums – all top-shelf players with great legacies of their own, but who really fit in here with the vision of the Curtis', which is quite a compliment to their music! There's a lot of angular energy at times, offset by richly dynamic solos – on the kind of record that's bristling with freshness right from the very first note. Titles include "The Professor", "Sensei", "Chief", "Torus", "Staircase Of Mount Meru", "Parametric", and "Three Points & A Sphere". CD

There's no Czarmageddon here – as the album's hardly an end game, and instead seems to have Czarface rising up again with a new sort of power and pride! Inspectah Deck, 7L & Esoteric seem to really earn their superhero status here – coming on with a quality that almost makes the whole thing effortless – as they unite the classic energy of their roots with the kind of freshness that's made previous projects so great! Kool Keith makes a guest appearance on "Fearless & Inventive" – and other titles include "Bob Laczar", "Splash Page", "Walk Through Walls", "The Czarlaac Pit", "Can It Be", "Czarv Wolfman", "Logan 5", and "Nu Mutantes". East West, 1993. Very Good ... $19.99 29.99
A key part of the too-short legacy of this wonderful duo – part of the top shelf of hip hop up-and-comers in the early 90s – and one of the few who were able to balance a new level of toughness with the smart rhymes and subtle wit that came into the game at the start of the decade! Dray and Skoob keep up the loco syllabic tempo and tongue-tripping rhymes on this one – all set to great production and beats from Solid Scheme – yet things are nicely never too over the top, too – which gives the record a subtle power that's only made it sound better and better as the years move on. Titles include "Baknaffek", "Wontu", "Check It Out", "Undaground Rappa", "Gimme Dat Micraphone", "It'z Lik Dat", "Host Wit Da Most", "Rappaz", and "Freakit". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles DavisBitches Brew ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $79.99
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisLive At The Fillmore East – It's About That Time ... CD
Columbia, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
Previously-unreleased live work by one of Miles Davis' most important groups ever – a Bitches Brew-era lineup, playing live at the Fillmore East a month before the record was released to the public – which makes this performance one of the first times the world had ever heard jams like this! The group's heavy on rhythm here – a rumbling groove brought up from the bottom, courtesy of the drums of Jack Dejohnette, basses of Dave Holland, and percussion of Airto – sewn together beautifully by the Fender Rhodes work of Chick Corea – easily some of the noisiest sounds the instrument ever produced! Miles plays trumpet, and Wayne Shorter's on soprano and tenor sax – on titles that include "Directions", "Spanish Key", "Masqualero", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Bitches Brew", and "It's About That Time/Willie Nelson". A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not much – and although guitar is sometimes used strongly, it's often not as noisy as in later live sides. Instead, the whole group gels together beautifully – an unlikely assortment of players that includes Gary Bartz and Steve Grossman on reeds, John McLaughlin on guitar, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Hermeto Pascoal on percussion, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all given new focus, direction, and inspiration by Miles! Titles include "What I Say", "Sivad", "Selim", "Funky Tonk", and a great medley of "Gemini/Double Image". LP, Vinyl record album
