Arnett Cobb/GuyLafitte —
Live In France ... CD Black & Blue/Solid (Japan), 1980. Used ...
$14.9918.99
With Cobb and Lafitte on tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums performing "On Green Dolphin Street", "Climb Every Mountain", "I Got Rhythm", "Jumpin At The Woodside", and the Cobb originals "Blues Abrupt" and "Go Red Go". CD
A rich testament to the strength of the Parisian traditional jazz scene in the early 70s – as key players Coleman and Lafitte work here with a quintet live at the Montreux jazz fest in 1973. Lafitte's tenor is always a treasure, warm and rich, but moody and edgey at the same time – like the best late work of Coleman Hawkins. The longish tracks on the set give him plenty of space to solo – and titles include "Sur Les Quais Du Vieux Paris", "L and L Blues", "Tour De Force", and "Montreux Jump". CD
(Out of print 1992 Black Lion pressing, sealed with a thin cutout through the spine.)
One of the greatest tenor stars in postwar Europe was GuyLafitte – a magnificent player whose genius rivalled Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, but also one who's been sadly underrecognized outside the French scene of which he was a part. Most of Lafitte's best work from the old days is extremely rare – and this long-overdue set is one of the first times his recordings from the 50s have been reissued properly. The set features tracks recorded in 1954 with a group that includes vibes (Geo Daly), piano (Raymond Fol), and guitar (Jean Bonal) behind Guy's wonderfully-toned tenor – and most of the material is in an easy swinging style that gives him the best room to roam around. The tracks are mostly standards – like "If I Had You", "Stardust", "Where Or When", and "I've Got The World On A String" – but the real genius is in Lafitte's playing, which will grab you from the first moment, and hold you all the way through! CD has a bonus track – "Boogie Blues". CD
A rich, warm session from French tenor giant GuyLafitte – one of the most soulful players to come out of the Paris scene of the postwar years, and a player with a sound that's somewhere between Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster! Lafitte's really in his element here – blowing wonderfully laidback solos in a group that features a 4-piece trombone section on about half the album, plus some more stripped-down settings with Raymond Fol on piano. Given the date and the title, the set should come across as hokey, but for some reason it doesn't – and that's largely because Lafitte's tenor work is so compelling – like a voice from the past that you think you've heard before, but somehow missed. Great stuff all around – and with tracks that include "Teemoo", "Chloe", "Passion Flower", "Sugar & Spice", and "A Lollipop For Chris". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Isn't It Romantic" and "Do Nothing Until You Hear From Me". CD
A lost treasure from French tenor genius GuyLafitte – a hell of a player from the postwar years, but one who was virtually unknown in the US! Lafitte's got a really classic sound on his horn – clearly inspired by Ben Webster and Lester Young, but handled with phrasing that's freshly all his own – and which has surprising modern touches where you'd least expect them – almost in the manner of Coleman Hawkins' great early 60s recordings. This set's got Lafitte working with a small combo that includes Art Taylor on drums, Henri Texier on bass, and Raymond Fol on piano – and the group's expanded on a few numbers by a larger horn section – in a mode that somehow seems to make Lafitte open up even more. Titles include "Siete", "Tili Fun", "Milligan Place", "Lumberjack", and "La Nuit Des Lapins Blemes". CD

GuyLafitte —
Jambo ... CD BMG (France), 1968. Used ...

One of the greatest albums ever recorded by GuyLafitte – a wickedly soulful set that's overflowing with Latin and modern touches! Lafitte's in the lead on tenor, backed by a group that features the groundbreaking George Arvanitas trio at its core, plus trombone from Sonny Grey and guitar from the great Jimmy Gourley. Arvanitas' group features some incredibly strong rhythm work from the team of Jacky Samson on bass and Charles Saudrais on drums – a pair that were one of the greatest bass/drum units working during the 60s on either side of the Atlantic – and equally well-suited to gently soulful moments as they were to full-on rhythmic romps! The album bristles with excitement from the word go – and features some surprising soul jazz groovers that have Arvanitas playing a bit of organ – as well as some great late nite numbers that really have Lafitte opening up on his horn. Titles include "Jambo", "Cote A Cote", "Jamaica", "African Night", and "Jamboree". CD

GuyLafitte & Pierre Broussaguet —
Crossings ... CD EmArcy (France), 1997. Used ...

A great recent recording by this masterful French tenorist! GuyLafitte has a warm rich soulful style – of the sort that might have been influenced by American ex-patriots living in France, like Ben Webster, Hal Singer, or Lucky Thompson – and his albums are classics of French jazz, but have never been properly issued in the US. This live set from a few years back is about the only way you can get his work on CD – and it features him in a wonderful setting that still demonstrates his well-honed talent on the tenor. Lafitte is paired with French bassist Pierre Broussaguet, and the two of them deliver a haunting batch of mellow duets, recorded in a warm intimate setting. Titles include "Matisse", "Talma", "Julie", "France Dimanche", "Three Little Words", and "The Days of Wine & Roses". Very nice, and very soulful. CD

GuyLafitte on tenor saxophone, Jeannot Rabeson on piano, Pierre Boussaguet on doublew bass, and Al Levitt on drums. CD
A great set of work by this under-documented Parisian pianist from the 50s! The CD features 12 tracks from a rare 10" album that Dieval recorded in 1957 with the "JACE All Stars" – a group that included a young Sacha Distel on guitar, and some great tenor work by GuyLafitte! That material is paired here with 4 more tracks by the Dieval trio – from a 45rpm ep – for a total of 16 titles that include "Pour Penser A Toi", "Learnin The Blues", "The Man I Love", "Rif Hi Fi", "Outro", "Blues For Polydor", "Indicatif", "Solitude", and "Do Not Disturb". Peanuts Holland/Buck Clayton/Charlie Singleton —
Jazz In Paris ... CD Universal (France), 1953/1954/1955. Used ...

During the 1950s, Paris was a particularly supportive environment for American jazz players with a slightly more traditional bent – swing-era giants who were perhaps fading a bit in the eyes of US audiences, but who were still very much on top with the French crowds. This CD is strong proof of that legacy – and it features three different sessions that each are fronted by a famous American swing trumpeter. All sessions are pretty great – but our particular favorite is the one with Peanuts Holland, as it features some great tenor work by GuyLafitte and vibes by Geo Daly, giving the session a quite different feel than the usual swing-based session. There's a total of 15 tracks on the CD – and all the material's quite rare. Titles include "Purple Sound", "Yesterdays", "Blue Feeling", "Buck's Bon Voyage", and "Gift For The Club". CD
