A nice trashy cover – and a great set of trucker country tunes from Starday and Gusto – with work by Red Sovine, Jimmy Martin, Lonnie Irving, Dave Dudley, Del Reeves, Tommy Hill, The Willis Brothers, and others! LP, Vinyl record album
(Most of the set is VG – but record 4 has more marks, and is VG-.)

✨✧ Joe MaphisAmazing Joe Maphis – King Of The Strings ... CD
Starday/Gusto, Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Joe Maphis was definitely the king of the strings back in the day – a guitarist who was so tight, he had to play a double-necked electric just to give his fingers enough to do – something that wouldn't come into vogue much later, until the 70s arena rock guitarists started to showcase the instrument! Yet Joe was never as overstated as those guys – because while deft, he's also strongly focused on melody and timing – never needing to show off too much, but still really blowing us away with his playing on a record like this – an amazing showcase to his straight-ahead skills on the guitar, as he works here on an early Mosrite model, designed by Joe himself. Titles include "Hot Rod Guitar", "Double Neck Boogie", "Coffee Break", "Scalping The Indians", "Fiddlin On The Guitar", and "A Little Bit Of Travis". CD

✨✧ Stanley BrothersEarly Starday/King Years – 1958 to 1961 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Our favorite years of the Stanley Brothers – material recorded after they'd left the bigger labels, and really started to hit their stride for the smaller indies King and Starday Records! Both companies were completely faithful to the growing sound of bluegrass, and really let the brothers take off and soar – unlocking that amazing harmony style that made their vocals so wonderful, and really honing their instrumental skills – often working alongside the mandolin of Bill Napier, whose talents here are tremendous! The set's way nicer than you might expect from the Gusto label – much more in a Bear Family mode, with very detailed notes, session information, and lots of images – all to support over 100 classic tracks, with titles that include "I Saw The Light", "Wild Bill Jones", "I'd Worship You", "Just Dreamin", "Beneath The Maple", "If I Lose", "Daybreak In Dixie", "Lonely Tombs", "Pass Me Not", "Purple Robe", "Wings Of Angels", "The Angel Of Death", "Your Selfish Heart", "How Mountain Girls Can Love", and our favorite-ever recording of "Man Of Constant Sorrow". ✨✧ Stanley BrothersKing Years 1961 to 1965 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from The Stanley Brothers – the second half of their later recordings for King Records – from a time when their talents were completely sublime! The voice of Ralph might best be known to some from the earlier Columbia and Mercury sides – but his approach here in the 60s is maybe even more wonderful – as is the recording quality of the work – never commercial, still quite spare, but with a crystal-clear conception that really gets at the heart of the genius vocal and instrumental interplay between Carter and Ralph Stanley! As before, there's loads of heartbreaking material on here that's perfect for the harmonies of the duo – a vocal presentation that we love even more than the Louvin Brothers – and Ralph's work on banjo is often as melodically expressive as the genius of Bill Monroe on the mandolin. 4CD set features fantastic notes, with loads of session detail and images - and the package features 111 songs, including "Stone Walls & Steel Bars", "Mother Call My Name In Prayer", "Working On A Building", "Dying A Sinner's Death", "My Sinful Past", "String Eraser & Blotter", "Hills Of Roan county", "Pig In The Pen", "Whiskey & Jail", "Train 45", and "Lonesome Traveler". ✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 17.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". Sonora CasinoTrompeteros (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A very groovy set, and one that already won us over with its cover – even though we're not sure the pink-pantsuited lady playing vibes is part of the group at all! Instead, these guys are a heavily percussive combo that thrive on the best modes of small combo 60s Latin – think Joe Cuba Sextet, or some of the groups right before the big wave of Latin Soul – a strong inspiration from the descarga jamming of the Havana scene, served up with lots of piano, percussion, bass, and trumpet – plus nice use of electric guitar at just the right times! The set's got one very unusual standout number – a long descarga titled "Astronautas A Mercurio" – which has lots of weird production, electronic, and funky psychedelic elements – but even the straighter Latin cuts are great, and include "El Turron De Pochita", "Serrano", "El Negro Javier", "Trompeteros", "Pa'L Gusto", "El Culantro", and "Bobby". ✨✧ Los HacherosPilon (with bonus download) ... LP
Chulo, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary Latin combo, but one with a really unique feel as well – a mix of 60s charanga modes, 50s Cuban roots, and some definite modern phrasing! The group has a really wonderful blend of flute, violin, trombone, tres, and percussion – and congolero Hector "Papote" Jimenez sings lead vocals on the set, but often seems more than willing to step back and let the instruments themselves provide plenty of voice! Production is nice and raw – with an echoey quality you don't always get in recent records of this nature – and titles include "Convergencia", "Pilon", "Cha Cha Herzilia", "Mami Me Gusto", "Desastre", and "Azucar". VariousBeat Vol 1 – Lounge At Cinevox ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99
Excellent funky and groovy tracks pulled from the catalog of the legendary Cinevox Records – home to some of Italy's greatest soundtrack work of the 60s and 70s! Sure, we've had some of the label's great stuff on single CDs – but this set pulls from a lot of soundtracks that haven't been reissued yet, and also includes a number of tracks that were never issued before at all! There's plenty of funky drums, fuzzy guitars, groovy organ, and lots of other nice bits in the set's 16 tracks – and the overall sound is a nice departure from some of the other Italian compilations. Titles include "Unknit" by Carlo Rustichelli, "2968" by Carlo Savina, "Up To Date" by Fred Bongusto, "5 Bambole Per La Luna D'Agosto" by Piero Umiliani, "Milano Rhythm & Blues" by Gianni Ferrio, "Serata Al Night" by Guido De Angelis, and "Il Dopolotta" by Piero Piccioni. Cinevox (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99
Fab and groovy! The Cinevox label was home to some of the swinginest soundtrack music to come out of Italy in the 60s and 70s – but lots of it's been buried for years, or relegated to pricey Japanese-only reissues. This set does a great job of correcting that problem – by sampling some of the greatest grooves from the legendary label, serving them up in a very strong 16 track set that's filled with loads of wonderful moments that you won't find elsewhere! Tracks include "Diamonds" by Franco Bixio, "Quicksilver (new edit)" by Giorgio Gaslini, "Car Chase At Margellina" by Guido e Maurizio De Angelis, "Fai Presto" by Gianni Ferrio, "Blue Rhythm Festival (new edit)" by Piero Piccioni, "Crazy Sax" by Augusto Martelli, and "Break" by Franco Bixio. VariousIES – Italian Erotic Sounds ... LP
Eleven/Early Sounds (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy ... $26.99
They had us at "Italian", drew us in with "Erotic", and really won us over with the sounds in this sweet little set! The music here is all from the very small Eleven sound library – a smaller Italian imprint that cut these great grooves in the late 70s – at a time when the Italian film scene had really opened up to a wide variety of erotic themes! Not all these tracks were used in erotic films – and in fact, some of them are so funky, they would actually take away from any sexy action on screen – as they're much more in the hard funky styles that were first coming out of the Italian library scene a few years before. There's a few disco-styled numbers with vocals, but the instrumental funk tracks are the real gems – and titles include the rare classic "Kamasultra" by Nando De Luca – plus "Love Tunnel" by Julie Wilde, "Fastness" by Tullio De Piscopo, "Joining Together" by Augusto Martelli, "ESP" by Persimfans, "Diva Da Strapazzo (unreleased inst)" by Mimesis, and "How Wonderful You Are" by Monique Rossi'. Irma (Italy), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Latin, jazz, funk, and soul – the best-ever volume in this always-great series, and a real treasure throughout! The set was put together by Luca Trevisi of LTJ Xperience, and it's steeped in his rich knowledge of classic vinyl and obscure groovers. Every cut's a winner, and the set bubbles over with a soulful finish that shows that Luca really has his ears in the right place – going for the subtle cuts that really hold up over time, and which make a compilation like this as exciting as finding a rare record from the 70s! Titles include "To Prove My Love" by Ned Doheny, "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Curtis Lundy, "Motherland" by Jon Lucien, "Vibe Samba" by Velho 4, "Neo Terra" by Freddie Hubbard, "Free" by Seawind, "Trying Hard To Look Inside" by Waters, "Comin Over Me" by Willie Bobo, "Kashba" by Angel Poco Gatti, "Tiki Tiki Donga" by Syreeta, "Fever" by Patti Drew, and "Pais Tropical" by Augusto Martelli. The 60s live again in this wonderful selection of rare soundtrack grooves – nearly all of them from the glory days of the Italian scene, almost all with a mod, swinging sound to match the cover! The tracks are the best upbeat, groovy styles from the period – and the package does a great job of mixing a few familiar numbers with some under-reissued gems that really make the set worth seeking out – a massive batch of 18 tracks in all, with titles that include "Il Divorzio" by Fred Bongusto, "Francoise" by Armando Trovajoli, "Sorrisi De Madonne" by Giorgio Gaslini, "Le Isole Dell'Amore" by Piero Umiliani, "Siamo Tutti Pomicioni" by Carlo Savina, "Amore A Forza" and "Blue Rhythm Festival (alt version)" by Piero Piccioni, and "Let's Find Out (sexy version)" by Armando Trovajoli.
