Joe MaphisAmazing Joe Maphis – King Of The Strings ... CD
Starday/Gusto, Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.99
Joe Maphis was definitely the king of the strings back in the day – a guitarist who was so tight, he had to play a double-necked electric just to give his fingers enough to do – something that wouldn't come into vogue much later, until the 70s arena rock guitarists started to showcase the instrument! Yet Joe was never as overstated as those guys – because while deft, he's also strongly focused on melody and timing – never needing to show off too much, but still really blowing us away with his playing on a record like this – an amazing showcase to his straight-ahead skills on the guitar, as he works here on an early Mosrite model, designed by Joe himself. Titles include "Hot Rod Guitar", "Double Neck Boogie", "Coffee Break", "Scalping The Indians", "Fiddlin On The Guitar", and "A Little Bit Of Travis". CD

Stanley BrothersEarly Starday/King Years – 1958 to 1961 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $21.99 29.98
Our favorite years of the Stanley Brothers – material recorded after they'd left the bigger labels, and really started to hit their stride for the smaller indies King and Starday Records! Both companies were completely faithful to the growing sound of bluegrass, and really let the brothers take off and soar – unlocking that amazing harmony style that made their vocals so wonderful, and really honing their instrumental skills – often working alongside the mandolin of Bill Napier, whose talents here are tremendous! The set's way nicer than you might expect from the Gusto label – much more in a Bear Family mode, with very detailed notes, session information, and lots of images – all to support over 100 classic tracks, with titles that include "I Saw The Light", "Wild Bill Jones", "I'd Worship You", "Just Dreamin", "Beneath The Maple", "If I Lose", "Daybreak In Dixie", "Lonely Tombs", "Pass Me Not", "Purple Robe", "Wings Of Angels", "The Angel Of Death", "Your Selfish Heart", "How Mountain Girls Can Love", and our favorite-ever recording of "Man Of Constant Sorrow". Stanley BrothersKing Years 1961 to 1965 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $21.99 29.98
Fantastic work from The Stanley Brothers – the second half of their later recordings for King Records – from a time when their talents were completely sublime! The voice of Ralph might best be known to some from the earlier Columbia and Mercury sides – but his approach here in the 60s is maybe even more wonderful – as is the recording quality of the work – never commercial, still quite spare, but with a crystal-clear conception that really gets at the heart of the genius vocal and instrumental interplay between Carter and Ralph Stanley! As before, there's loads of heartbreaking material on here that's perfect for the harmonies of the duo – a vocal presentation that we love even more than the Louvin Brothers – and Ralph's work on banjo is often as melodically expressive as the genius of Bill Monroe on the mandolin. 4CD set features fantastic notes, with loads of session detail and images - and the package features 111 songs, including "Stone Walls & Steel Bars", "Mother Call My Name In Prayer", "Working On A Building", "Dying A Sinner's Death", "My Sinful Past", "String Eraser & Blotter", "Hills Of Roan county", "Pig In The Pen", "Whiskey & Jail", "Train 45", and "Lonesome Traveler". Joe TexBest Of Joe Tex – Includes His Complete King Recordings ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.99
Very early work from Joe Tex – recorded way before his boogie records of the 70s, and even his country soul classics of the 60s! Yet despite the age of these sides, the Joe Tex vocal approach is very firmly in place – that raspy mode that's undeniably human, and which might be rooted in blues and gospel, but which already takes a place here with a standout mode that's completely Joe's own! Musical modes move between R&B ballads and some bolder early soul styles – and titles include "She's Mine", "My Biggest Mistake", "Get Way Back", "Right Back To My Arms", "Come In This House", "I Had To Come Back To You", "Pneumonia", "Davy You Upset My Home", and "Another Woman's Man". VariousOriginal Blues/Risque Blues – It Ain't The Meat – Original King Recordings ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.98
Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Titles on this volume include "It Ain't The Meat" by The Swallows, "Salty Dog" by The Lamplighters, "Ride Daddy Ride" by Orvill Fats Noel, "The Walkin Blues" by Fluffy Hunter, "Your Love Keeps A Workin On Me" by Lula Reed, "I Knew He Would" by The Shars & Flats, "Wasn't That Good" by Wynonie Harris, "Shake That Thing" by Wynonie Harris, and "Roll Roll Pretty Baby" by The Swallows. ✨✧ Champion Jack DupreeSings The Blues ... CD
King/Gusto, Early 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early King Records material by Champion Jack Dupree – a hell of a pianist, and a heck of a great singer too – working almost as a raconteur on some of the best songs on this collection! The music has deep roots in New Orleans, where Jack must have really honed his piano skills – but there's also a more northern, more urban presentation of the music on these cuts – a strong current of wit that comes in the way that Jack puts over a tune, and a great mix of jazzy phrasing in both his piano and the electric guitar that sometimes provides strong accompaniment. Jack's vocals are almost more commentary than traditional lyrics – often with an undercurrent of raunch – and titles include "That's My Pa", "Failing Health Blues", "Big Leg Emma's", "Two Below Zero", "Camille", "Me & My Mule", "She Cooks Me Cabbage", and "Silent Partner". ✨✧ George Hines & The Gospel WindsMoving Up ... CD
King/Gusto, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great 70s gospel from George Hines & The Gospel Winds – but a set that's recorded with much more of an old school vibe overall! The interplay between lead and group vocals really takes us back to some of the best male groups of the postwar years – that time when gospel vocal dynamics were set to inform generations of doo wop and soul music – and hardly needed much instrumentation for backup, because the singers had plenty of energy on their own! This set follows that approach in a great way – with just a bit of rhythm here and there, often much more back in the mix than the vocals, which shine beautifully upfront. Titles include "Moving Up", "I Dream", "Testify", "Faith & Charity", "My Prayer", "God's Gonna Move", "Working For Him", and "Without Him". CD

✨✧ Red SovineTeddy Bear ... CD
Gusto, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The biggest classic ever from Red Sovine – a landmark record from the CB Radio years of trucker country music! Red Sovine had cut many records for King and Starday before Teddy Bear, but the set's a perfect summation of the more sentimental style he brought to his music – which often included a bit of recitation too – with a quality that's even better here than in early years, given the aging quality of Sovine's voice! Instrumentation is a bit out of time – maybe more late 60s than mainstream 70s country – but that's also a real part of the charm of the record – as Red reminds the America of the disco years that out on the road, there was a very different way of life still going on. Titles include the megahit "Teddy Bear", plus "Love Is", "1460 Elder Street", "18 Wheels Hummin Home Sweet Home", "Does Steppin Out Mean Daddy Took A Walk", "Last Mile Of The Way", "Daddy", and "Bootlegger King". One of the few good things to come out of the cultural pillage of the Buena Vista Social Club was the reintroduction of soulful Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer to American audiences. A jazzy gem from the team of Fred Bongusto and Roby Poitevin – a score with even more charm than usual for this magical soundtrack era! Excellent funky and groovy tracks pulled from the catalog of the legendary Cinevox Records – home to some of Italy's greatest soundtrack work of the 60s and 70s! Pianist Daniel Bernardes has a lot of percussionists in his group – not just drummer Mario Costa in the core trio with Antonio Augusto Aguiar on bass – but another quartet of musicians, who add in vibes, marimba, glockenspiel, and other percussion – all in a set of tracks based on the compositional ideas of composer Olivier Messiaen! The music is still very strongly in a jazz-based mode – and the percussion is often used lightly, as melodic as it is rhythmic – but there's a great sense of note clusters going on, in ways that make the music inherently rhythmic, even when the drums are taking a back seat to the piano and vibes. A beautiful tribute to the too-short career of Swedish trumpeter Anders Garstedt – a musician who never achieved the global fame he deserved, but who really left his mark upon a recent generation of Scandinavian musicians! The intertwining of horns is especially nice, especially in the slower progression of moments – and there's a strength to Garstedt's writing that makes us hope there's more gems like these in his songbook.
